View Full Version : Why you love your stylist

Hi LHC!
I've been noticing a few threads on hair mishaps/advice that didn't turn out too well, and thought there should be a counter thread looking at the positive side of things :)

I'll start off by saying, I've never had a haircut I didn't like. When I was little, I would go to the cheapest salon, and get an $8.00 cut, and love it. I didn't have a stylist to whom I was loyal to until a few years ago - but boy, am I happy I decided to go to her! :D Not only is she super talented, she's also one of the most charismatic people I know. Makes getting a cut/treatment, etc. so much fun! I haven't been going as much recently as I've been dabbling in self-trimming, but I think I'll treat myself for my next haircut.

So, now it's your turn. What do you like about your stylist?

Great thread! I understand that some people have bad experiences but I dislike the "stylist bashing" that sometimes goes on here with people competing to tell the worst tale.

I love my stylist because she's just a short bus ride away.

I love my stylist because the salon is unpretentious and charges less than half what I used to pay at the fancypants London place.

I love my stylist because she has long hair too, so she understands.

I love my stylist because she does both cut and colour, so no hanging around between the two; and she makes sure the cut and the lowlights complement each other.

I love my stylist because she achieves the perfect smooth straight blowdry with a gentle touch - my last (male) stylist pulled so hard on the brush that I had to brace my neck muscles, painfully!

I love my stylist because I get great compliments after she's done my hair.

I love my stylist! :flowers:

And I'm forever grateful to LHCer darl_in1 for introducing me to her.

Thank you Anastachan, I did not realize that! Mods, are the topics different enough that they should be separated, or is there some way these threads can be merged :flower:

Ooh tabitha I didn't mention the perfect blow-dry! I can't blow-dry my own hair without pulling or ending up with massive tangles, but I love the results I get when my stylist does it. She's the best!

Because she is fun. During the years I've known her, her hair's been just about every colour on the palette, and at least 3 different textures from super curly to stick-straight and buzzed in the back. She has had a baby and a few new tattooes since she did my first trim, too.
AND - she knows curly hair, she will cut as much as I ask her to cut, and she works at the cheapest chain of salons in Canada. $15/cut plus tips.

It's nice to have a newbie who is so observant. :flower:

That said, the first thread was about good advice gotten from stylists in general - this is about one specific stylist you love, for reasons that might be totally unrelated to what she/he says about hair. Some people do develop a personal friendship with their stylist - which might be the reason why many elderly ladies have their hair done on a weekly basis in the same old style they've had since the 1970s.

I think you do! You have your own personal style.

One of my favourite cheap chains here (I live in Canada) is First Choice. They're always clean, the price is right, and the stylists are well eucated :)

Hello,Capybara! I'm the creator of the ''other'' thread, and I don't really think they are the same. The other one is basically based on advice your stylist gave you, this one's not.It would be cool if they were merged,we'd be twin creators!:D But I don't really think they're gonna do that,tough..We'll see!
Let's hope they're not deleted!:poot:

I love her because when my daughter told her that I have extra-long hair, the stylist told her that I was probably afraid to try something new, but don't worry because she's good at talking people into new styles. But when I met her and talked about my length and my goals, she immediately got on board and has done an awesome job of helping me maintain my preferred U-shape. (P.S: She's a friend of my daughter, and daughter pressured me into seeing her, but I was a little afraid after hearing that she might try to talk me into a new style.)

I haven't seen her since last January, though; decided to go for the maximum grow and try out fairy tale ends.

I've been going to the same salon for 21 years (since I was 7!). I've had the same fantastic stylist for the past 4 or 5 years. I only go about 3 times a year for trims and every time she is awesome!

I love my stylist because she never tells me to cut more than I want (and often tells me she doesn't think we should cut as much as I suggest).

I love my stylist because she always says things like, "I love you hair, I miss mine being long!"

I love my stylist because she always compliments my natural color and says "Never NEVER highlight or dye it!"

I love my stylist! (I think she is a longhair at heart:) )

I love my stylist because he loves to play with my hair when I first come in to see him and try out all kinds of new styles.

I love my stylist because he is completely supportive of what I want to do in terms of my length even though he warns me not to be too disappointed if I can't grow my hair to the floor because of genetics.

I love that I can tell him I just want to take as little off the bottom as necessary to make it look healthy again and when I get up at the end there is very little hair on the floor.

I love that he likes to take pictures of my hair and styles that he can do to advertise himself as a long hair specialist.

It always feels like I'm visiting a friend when I go in to see him and get my hair trimmed and he always gives great advice and information.

The only downside is that it can take between 2 and 3 hours to get my hair trimmed since he loves to play with it and also to take pictures of it (he's also a photographer) so I usually have to schedule my day around getting my hair done :).

She gives the best scalp massage I've ever had. She doesn't always hit the cut, but when she does, it is the best cut I've ever had (she admitted on several occasions that my super slippery hair is her hardest cut). And the last time I trimmed, she took minimal amounts off knowing I am letting my hair grow. :) She is also a great colorist, though I quit coloring a year and a half ago. These are just her skills, mind you. She is also a fantastic person!

I love my stylist because she is a perfectionist and always tried her best to get your hair exactly the way you want it.
She is honest and I know I can trust her.
She is funny and has a wicked sense of humor, so it's always entertaining to be in her chair. (which happens to be MY chair, because she is one of the stylists in my salon ! Yay me !!)

I went to one who actually did a trim NOT a cut & I love her for that... I want to go back to her when I get my hair styled and what not for a special occasion!

I've been self trimming for some years now, but the stylist I still think of as 'mine' cut my hair off and on for years. Discovering her existence meant that I didn't actually dread going for a trim.

She listened to what I said about my hair, and never did anything without consulting me about what I wanted. She worked hard to stay current with techniques within the industry (chemical, styling, coloring, etc.) and kept an eye on style trends just so she'd know what was going on in the world.

I'm genuinely fond of her as a person, and if I ever went back to wearing shorter hair, I'd have no trouble going back to her. In the past, the only reason we ever quit working together was geographic. At one point, she temporarily retired and moved to a different region, (boy was I glad she came back to town!) and at another, I moved away for a while.

She worked with me as I grew out my hair, so that the bangs-growing-out phase wasn't entirely too hideous.

She'd probably laugh if she knew how long my hair is now, and if I were ever up 'in town' I'd drop in with some holiday cookies just for the fun of it.

.........because when she cuts my hair it truly is an excellent cut. I can easily go 6 months + between trims and it still holds on to a style.

.........because she has now refused me service two times! She knows I'm growing and will not even trim it right now. Two weeks ago she looked at it and said, "No. Come back in a few months." She freely admits she could use the money but I love and admire her professionalism and her efforts to help me reach my goal. She's awesome! :crush::blossom:

I like her high light and colouring skills..

I like the way she talks to me, not pushy and I feel cozy and comfortable letting her to decide what she wants to do with my hair.

I like the way she cuts my fringe, it's always edgy and very different everytime.

I'm looking forward to do ceramic perm my hair in 5 to 6 months time :)
