View Full Version : Shaving Head and Wearing Wigs Over

So, my hair is already pretty short and damaged. I'm thinking of buzzing it down and letting my hair grow back out to chin length heathy.
Has anyone done this? It's obviously drastic, so I'm going to play around with wigs first but...I kind of like this idea :)

I see you're at shoulders right now. Getting from buzz to chin might take a year or longer. Keep that in mind before doing the chop :)
Maybe you should cut back to chin now and then maintain at that length until all the damage is gone? (with microtrims) Chin is a comfortable length to wear a wig over, you don't have to go bald to wear wigs. (i've seen classic length haired people wearing wigs and looking natural! ;) )

Oh, my profile is outdated. Right now my hair is just below my ears/jaw length.
And yeah, I'm def gonna wear the wigs for awhile before buzzing. I think wigs could be a way for me to change things up (red to black to blonde etc) without damaging my hair, if I can get the to work for me :)

I've done it twice before and I have to say- I didn't regret it one bit either time!

Personal experience - wigs are itchy, hot, and do not stay in place, especially over a bald head. Decent ones are expensive, $150+. Cheap wigs fall apart after a month of use. They just start shedding hair like mad and the "hair" breaks off quicly. Again, I have had experience with this. My wig works better with a little hair under it so I can pin it to my scalp. Over a bald head, the itch was massive, even with a wig liner, and the blasted thing slipped around so much it was obvious I was wearing one.
On the plus side, a wig will keep you warm (it is winter here) and protects the hair you do have since it is covered. I never realized how much my hair had to do with keeping warm until I did not have it any more. Good luck with your decision!

Didn't Igor start out with a shaved head?
I agree that you do want to spend a bit on a wig or two, you don't want to deal with the cheap ones. Maybe get 2 decent wigs, you should only have to wear them a few months until your hair is a couple inches long, right?

Come see us over on the super shorties thread before you take off more length. We have some ladies with fragile hair who can give you lots of advice, and you might be able to save what you have while waiting for the grow-out. There are a LOT more awkward stages from buzzed to jawline/ear than there are from jawline to chin.

I've not been at "buzzed" but I started at about 1" all over and I would never do it again or suggest it to anyone else. It's VERY awkward to grow to chin from that length, if I had it to do over again I'd chop bit by bit, maintaining at chin, until the old growth/damage is gone.

Yes Igor shaved her head and has two wonderful articles.
I have yet to find a wig that doesnt itch from synthetic to real hair. There are some problems wearing wigs - ie you can open a hot oven as it melts the front of the wig if synthetic and so on.

May I just thank you for that marvellous mental image? (although of course I hope it isn't from personal experience).
