View Full Version : Is it just me, or is there a huge increase in shedders right now?

I've kind of noticed that there seems to be a lot more threads popping up with people having massive sheds within the last month or so, myself being one of those shedders.
Could it have to do with the seasons (although I live on the equator and technically have no seasons)? Or something like how when women are together for long enough, their menstrual cycles beome synchronized, so by some online cyber magic, our shedding cycles become synchronized as well? Just kidding.
But seriously, it's like a big bunch of us are all shedding massively together. Anyone else think it's weird?

I noticed all the comments about people shedding, so much so that i keep expecting to see my own hair start shedding every time I wash or brush. Weird, eh? (that so many are shedding at the same time?)

I have not posted about it, unless I am sleep posting again, but I am also experiencing a shed cycle. It isn't bad at the moment, but it is noticeable.

Hmm, I think I'm shedding too. For me I suspect the heat of an overheated house in winter (Canada). Or it could be that we are all hyper aware of shedding, because we are all posting about it....
I don't really mind, because I'm saving up shed hair for future strand testing. I do wonder though, how it is possible to have so much hair on my head and in my comb!

I thought my hair shed a lot around early of this year.
so I went to see Dermatologist's. had lot of blood test etc.
Dr told me there is nothing ploblem with my scalp and shed,
he told me that * 100% sure * about it.
even couple Dr( dermatologist) and couple PA told me that I have a good densty of hair.
but my hair shed more since Oct......increased more than ever.
(I've been counting my hair shed..;))
sometimes 120,( I wash my hair everyday, other words I get so itchy) average is 100 for a day. but there is 10 total about my hair shed 170 a day since Oct.
I did skip to wash hair , but still the shed namber is not changed. I hope it's just seasonal shed....

It's interesting to hear people talk about shed cycles. My hair sheds a lot every time I comb or wash it and it always has. It comes in handy sometimes when I am out somewhere and have a piece of food in between two molars that I can't get out no matter what I do... I just comb my hand through my hair and use a shed strand as floss. In private of course.

I haven't really posted about it, but I am also experiencing a massive shed. It started in the summer, seemed to peak and then get better...but now it's back to shedding like crazy. I have to pull a clump of hair out of my brush every day, and tons seem to come out in the shower. I've lost just over 1/4" in thickness. I have lots of new growth, though...little baby hairs all along my hairline and popping up on top of my head too. Hopefully in a year or so I will have that 1/4" back. I had to trim about 1/2" off my ends because they were starting to look mighty thin.
*sigh* oh shedding, how I hate thee.

All sheds must come with tools.
(sorry, couldn't resist that one)
Right now I've gone back to using my horn hair fork and combs. Scrunchies are so convenient, but I find they tend to pull out my hair. Other than the stuff my dermatologist gave me to use on my hair, I also take 5000mcg of biotin daily, with Omega 3-6-9 oils, and a daily multivitamin. So far it's either the shedding has lessened, or that I've gotten used to the amount that it doesn't seem as alarming as it was before. There's lots of new baby hairs as well.

I went through a shedding phase for almost 6 weeks this autumn. I was scared because I have never experienced that since I started to better take care of my hair a year and a half ago. I thought that all my work was in vain, but now it seems to return to normal. I still lose some hair, but no more than usual. I didn't change anything in my routine so I believe it was something natural. The good thing is that is over and I don't have to worry anymore.

I counted my daily shedding once and it was about 200. I saw the size of the hair ball so i can compare next sheddings. After wash the hair i collect is almost twice the size :(

I think its just the time of year/weather/season.
I too have been shedding like crazy lately but have attributed it to wearing it up in braids or buns for days at a time.

Bumblebums posted a very interesting article about seasonal shedding. http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=60257
I find that it totally applies to me. MAJOR shed every 7 to 8 years and seasonal shedding, minor, every September.
The article was about a European subject (like me) so maybe a North American pattern is October/November shed?

I shed like a cat!
Okay, really only when I wash my hair and that may be due to the fact that I don't comb my hair much between or have it loose, so all shed hairs appear at the same time but really shed a few days prior to my wash? Just a theory. That and I need to get back on track with nutrition which I'm sure is a factor in my case. The full-time student/part-time retail diet can't be helping!

I have always shed a LOT but I always have had lots of hair, and lots of regrowth, so I have never been to worried but recently, my hair is getting thinner. I suddenly notice scalp when I part my hair, or have to make sure it is just so when pulling it back, or scalp! I am freaking out!
I do not count shed hairs (wouldn't even know how to, they are everywhere!)
And, I do not measure my ponytail.
I know without doing one of those 2 things it is really hard to know for sure if I am going bald, or shedding but I have OCD, and the last thing I need is something else to obsess over.
I am new to LHC, can anyone offer up some "don't worry, it is just a seasonal shed, ignore it, don't think about it, and soon enough, you will forget it ever happened, and your think hair will return?" Please!

I have no idea how much I shed. I do know my hair feels thinner now but that might just be because it's getting longer and it falls differently? Or maybe a seasonal shed or I'm just imagining things. As long as I'm not seeing bald spots I don't worry about it. :p

My shedding had been up quite a lot; I lost almost 1/2" circumference, but it's not concerned me enough to mention it. It's slowed down and I'm sure it'll thicken back up.
I wonder how many silent shedders there are at any one time?

My hair is hardly shedding at all right now, and my body hair growth rate has slowed down significantly (based on how often I need to shave) ...but I was shedding a lot in the late summer/early fall. Now that it's closer to winter it seems like my hair is more dormant.

This exactly. Every day I come across either a thread or a post from a seasoned regular or from brand new members everyday that complain about a bad shedding. There are a myriad of reasons for an abnormal shedding...........................for some people its health related, for others it might be seasonal, for others it could be due to certain medications they are taking.

I usually shed at a pretty consistent rate but I have noticed more people posting about huge sheds. Its strange though since you would expect people to shed less in the cold winter months.

I've been shedding quite a bit for the past two weeks. I often have both a spring and fall shed, although usually the fall shed would be earlier (around October), so I'm not particularly alarmed. I've also been experimenting with herbal washes, so it could be that, but I'm leaning towards the seasonal shed. But there are always people here with sheds that may have medical causes, too.

I don't exactly know if I am shedding (if I was, I think it's stopped now?) but my hair feels too thin for me now at the ends. My pony circumference isn't too bad, its around 3.5", but my circumference at the tail of a braid is around 1". I do layer it myself very slightly (because blunt hemlines do NOT flatter me at all), and I think most of the old salon layers are almost grown out, which literally destroyed my hair.
There aren't any broken ends and have almost no split ends (weird because they were running rampant before, and I even flat iron my hair once a week, though I have a very intricate and careful routine for when I do that), BUT I have noticed lately that I have a TON of baby hairs growing, around 2-5 inches long, all over my scalp. So hopefully those babies will grow grow grow so I can get some thickness back!
I can't take biotin though, I tried taking 5000 mcg a day and I got the worst breakouts. Should I try taking a lower dosage?
Also, I asked my mom to look at the back of my head to see if it looked thin, I was paranoid because it feels like the thinnest part of my hair is in back below the tops of my ears. She said it wasn't thin at all but that she thinks my hairtype changed from C/M from when I was a little girl to FINE. Is that possible? I had the thickest head of hair around when I was a kid, and bouncy Shirley Temple curls (LOOK! (there are also two more of my hair when I was older) (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/album.php?albumid=5797&pictureid=75745)). Even if it weren't for the thin ends, I would still have only a 3.5 circumference. I remember when that circumference would be just ONE of my braids! *sigh*

^^ start with 1000 mcg daily and work your way up. That's how I did it.

November 28th, 2010, 06:45 PM
Yeah I figured I was just taking too much, thanks! :flower:
I'll have to get a lower dosage as all I have now are the 5000 mcg capsules, but I'll save those as I might be able to get up that high at some point. I really liked what biotin did for my hair but I couldn't deal with the horrible zits when I usually have pretty clear skin.

I had a massive shedding late this summer, but it was due to stress. Stress is back down, and my shedding is back to normal. I have seen that I have an increase in shedding in spring and late summer, it seems to be the cycle for me.

I haven't mentioned it here but I've been shedding like crazy for the past month but it is not that bad now... I think it's because the weather has been so weird lately. Changing between hot and cold and back again... Maybe I'm making that up

I was shedding a lot though I think its calming down now. In my case I assumed it was caused by a run of attempts at lightening hendigo (honey and oil treatments, no scary bleach) that required more washing to get out than my hair is used to. I also used a heating pad on my head when I did a couple of EVOO treatments that could have been the culprit? I did also wonder if it was just seasonal too. Freaked me out but I got up the guts to measure a few days ago and it doesn't seem to have lost any thickness. :)

*sigh* Me too! It's nice to know though that I'm not alone- your post mirrors my experience almost exactly. However, I had to have FOUR INCHES (ouch!) cut from the bottom to even out my see-through ends. Between the shedding, layered cut, and protein overload my hair went through hell this past summer, not to mention the extreme heat from working in a greenhouse. Back to the drawing board...

My "trick" is cool/cold water washes and rinses. It reduces my shower shed tremendously. Though it doesn't work for dogs and I've never bathed my cat. I value my life more than that!;)

For the dog and the cat, go to Furminator.com. You will be amazed.....as a groomer I love this product. You will notice little to no shedding for 4-6 weeks per pet. They should list on their site what groomers in the area do it. You can buy the tool and solution yourself at large pet supply stores, but you have to 'know' what you are doing or A) it won't work and B) you can cause discomfort to your pet.
I have been shedding terribly right now........really tempted to try Monistat........I have been reading up on it. :D

I think I'm also shedding more than usual. Usually when I use my wide-tooth comb, I hardly lose any hair at all during the combing itself. Now it seems I just have to put it in my hair to get it full with loose strands... but I think it's just the season. Is cold icy winter here. :p

I'm shedding like crazy, and have been complaining about it for weeks. My husband is so sick of hearing "I'm going bald" that lately, if I even look like I'm going to open my mouth while I'm combing my hair in the mornings, he actually automatically says "You're NOT going bald" before I can say anything at all. Poor long-suffering creature... but it really seems like I am! Except, of course, that my hair looks no thinner than before. It just seems like a LOT of hair!

I have been shedding really bad for about a month from major stress. So bad that I decided to invoke the 2 week rule on cutting on 11/21, so if there is no slow-down on hair loss by 12/5, I am thinking of trimming a couple inches to see if it will make it stop. Yes, I have absolutely no rational reason for thinking that cutting will stop the shedding, but I feel like I have to do something. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
