Hello ladies,

It's obvious here you're pretty skilled with hair styling. It's always nice to lurk here for some inspiration. But now since I'm running out of options I would like to ask you about sites with some instructions or other help with doing historical hairstyles(baroque, rococo victorian, elizabethan etc). I understand some of them require special frames or other equipment, or adding volume by a sponge hidden in your hair. But still it would be fun to make.

Here are some ideas to begin with:

it's hard to make it with those instruction as a base (on the left side are pictures)

also this lady's hairstyle (I hope she won't mind using her photo)

I always wonder how to make such a lovely volume effect on sides

and here is a site with fabulous hair tutorials.

So, please post some links, ideas, photos... Would love to see an outcome of experiments! Long hair=fun with styling:wink:

Hello, and welcome!

Back in the 1880s (from what I've read in "Fashions in Hair" by Richard Corson, many of the ladies of the time used false hairpieces to achieve some of their styles. They added "poufs", "hair braids" and "curls" to accompany the hair they already possessed.

There are several ways you can use ordinary braids in braided styles (buns, coronets). These don't require any skill except knowing how to section your hair and how to braid. Of course a lot depends on how much hair you have to work with..but with a little practice you can achieve lovely styles. I'm a braid fanatic and have been using braids for over 40 years.

Yes, their using false hair may be an obstacle to achieve some of styles, but this can be solved by creating illusions like already said - hidden sponge for example.

I was already experimenting with only braids, but because of aesthetic matter(body/head shape) I prefer high placed, full hairstyles.
If you have your own photo as an avatar I must say you're very passionate and patient:)

There is a beautiful fan/rosette style in the hairstyle article section which looks as if it would take less than twenty minutes that is entirely made up of braids and is very Victorian. There was a site where a woman with very long hair had listed in detail the iconic styles and how to emulate them from each era, I found it on google but I didn't save it anywhere unfortunately. I think I searched with "vintage hairstyles" or "renaissance hairstyles" hope that helps!
