View Full Version : Do You Feel More Beautiful With Your Hair Up or Down?

I have noticed I don't feel as confident or as pretty when I wear my hair up. This is strange because I used to feel the exact opposite. I have bought several beautiful hair forks and sticks and find myself not using them because of this. How do you feel, or is there a difference for you?

I don't think I look good with my hair down. Pretty much everyone I know agrees.

I don't think it looks too bad up, I just FEEL more beautiful with it down. Plus it's soft so I like to feel it on my back!

I almost always feel prettier with my hair down (or at least 1/2 down). Lately, though, I am in such bad need of a decent hair shaping that I prefer it up.
Usually wearing it up makes me feel like a librarian. Plus, my hair has never been cooperative. It has little frizzes and sticking-out ends that never give that smooth, elegant look that an updo should have.

I definitely feel more confident and attractive with it down. I feel very plain, boring and like my face is poorly framed with it up, but I think learning some nicer updos and investing in some pretty hair toys will help for me. :)

as man i always wear my hair down, and i think it looks much better down than up on me. I definiately love if a woman wear her hair down, i like to see the all length of the beautiful long hair :).

Over the years, I've flip-flopped several times on this subject. In high school I liked it up. During my university years I always wore it down. For the first few years after I graduated it was always up. Now I mostly prefer it down again, except for formal occasions.
I think it's because my face has changed over the years; in university my face was very round, so wearing it down sort of minimized that effect. Now after some significant weight loss, my face seems like it's all jaws & cheekbones, so I feel like wearing my hair down softens up all that angularity (^(oo)^)

I depends on what way I want to feel beautiful.
When my hair is down I feel an ethereal beauty and when I have it up it's a powerful and classy beauty.

I look way better with it up, but it needs to be very clean and otherwise in a good mood before it qualifies. It seems to be something about my facial shape, and possibly the fact that it's unstyled. Plus for some reason I always have a few wisps that frame my face well, and they fall naturally into pretty placements when the hair's up. It gets mixed in with the other hair the rest of the time.
My boyfriend likes it down, though...

Up. We always wore our hair up as kids. We weren't allowed to wear it down. Even to this day, my mom would be upset with my hair just flowing, tangling up. If we wore it down, that meant TONS of detangling later. In fact, we don't let my niece wear her hair down. Just a cultural/traditional thing.
Also, in school, teachers didn't like the whole wearing the hair down thing either because then girls would start comparing themselves to each other, which was discouraged. No brushing or combing in class either.

I actually don´t feel a difference.
It depends more on the situation. Hair down because I didn´t manage an updo or hair down because I want it down are two diffenrent things to me. In the first situation I feel messy, in the second beautiful.^^

wow, I can't repsond to any of those options because I prefer having my hair down at times, I love it when my hair is having a curly day and it makes me feel wonderful. But I also feel at my best with my hair halfup. So I think they tie and its not that I don't feel a difference, it just really does depend on my hair day

Generally when I wear it up I feel more beautiful as I have been growing out from a pixie cut and am happy that it is now long enough to even put up.
After not having that option for so long, it makes me feel much prettier.

Down, especially if I've sock curled it. When it's up I feel like it's not there. My compromise is when I braid it down my back & can feel the band resting on my back durring the day :) makes me happy knowing that even counting the fact that I haven't straightened it and that I tend to leave about 6 inches free, the band still hits at BSL. It's a small victory, but a victory none the less haha

Definitely with it down. When it's flowing free, I feel free, and like myself.
When it's up, because I have such a youthful face, I feel I just look like a little child.

I feel more beautiful with my hair loose hands, er, I mean hair down! :cheese: (Sorry for the bad pun, I couldn't resist!) There's just something so feminine and magical about having my full mane of hair flowing down my back and I imagine that my DBF couldn't agree more. :D
ETA: And no, I'm not implying that short hair is not feminine. There are a lot of very feminine styles out there that are short, too (I just don't feel like they suit ME, lol).

This is so funny!!! I am over 40 and feel like I look "old" with my hair up no matter the stye. Even a messy bun or whatever. I am considering sideswept bangs to avoid this feeling. I wonder if it is our location or environment that is why...I am in WI. :D

This is a very subjective question for me. It really depends on my mood and what's going on. While I might not always feel more beautiful with my hair down, it's kind of comforting (at least when I wear it down just to feel the length, etc). Other times I wear it down to kind of show it off, but then there are the worries about tangles, static, etc.
When it's up I sometimes feel boring and blah, and unremarkable. Then I realize that I don't know anybody else who wears their hair like I do, nor who has the hair sticks and other various implements that I own.
I think I'm gonna vote for the 2nd option: objectively I really don't feel the difference. Subjectively is a whole 'nother story that changes from day to day.

I feel more beautiful with it down, because when I wear it up it emphasizes my long neck and my large forehead. If I had bangs, I might feel more beautiful wearing it up. They'd draw attention away from my hairline and, if they were long enough, from my neck as well.

I feel very pretty with freshly oiled brushed hair left down and loose. But woe betide if I try something like go outdoors... it goes everywhere! Whipping around my face, getting tangled... urg now that does not help to make me feel beautiful, which is why it's usually up.

I didn't vote because I'm somewhere in the middle. I feel girlier and prettier with my hair down but I feel more elegant and polished with it up - I mean up in a fancy updo, not a nautilus bun since I wear one most days.

I think I look better with it down, overall, but even before I started wearing it up I almost always had it back in a ponytail. Back then, really up was only for special occasions -- prom, for instance -- and that was a sleek French twist with a lot of bobby pins that took an interminably long time. So possibly part of it is the "ordinary daytime look" seeming... less.
...I don't think I usually quite reach "sleek." I learned to do a softer French twist on my own with a comb, but I can't seem to get the hang of it at my current length anymore. Which is too bad, because I have some combs I really like a lot.

Down. Everyone agrees. Especially when I define the curl (define = heat). My hair is naturally a frizzy curl so it looks nicer when I use curling tongs.
However, I hardly wear it down. Practical reasons as well as wanting to grow it out. I have very early morning classes so I often just roll it in a bun and walk out the door. :D

I voted "I don't feel a difference" because both up and down are good for feeling beautiful at different times. When my hair goes all frizzy or hasn't been washed in a while, up is nicer. But when the wave is all nice, then down is beautiful. However, for functions I tend to wear it up, at least partially, because I love dancing, and my hair just tangles something awful if I'm bouncing around with it free.

Hello everyone. I find that it really depends on how I am wearing my hair as in straight or curly. I have fairly curly hair and my favorite way to wear it is half up and half down when its curly. When I straighten out my hair I like to wear it down. I feel very ancient egyptian with my blunt bangs at the moment.
This may change as it gets long

This is an easy one..down. Natural, free. But at home or special occasions. Example, when I go to celebrate the holidays, with my parents, I will wear it up, start with curls and put it up so it has some body and interest beside the side braid bun I'm planning. If I were spending the evening at home with a love interest, it would be long and free, or easy to take down with my new ketylo stick.;)

I prefer up. My hair is really thick and when it's down I like it for about ten seconds after I just combed it but the moment I start moving around my hair falls down again cause it's really heavy. Most regular pins and clasps can't even keep it up. When my hair is down I think it looks really "wild". I rather like the classy look with my hair up.

Preface: this is my first post, hooray!
I definitely feel more beautiful with my hair down. My hair has always been at least shoulder length and between the ages 4-11 and 14-19.5 it's been about BSL/Waist.
When I was 14-16 I always had my hair up. Always. I thought I looked terrible with it up or down but put it up because it was easy for school and I didnt have to think about styling it.
However, by 17 my (previously virgin, healthy) hair was breaking off because of constant straightening. At this point I felt prettier with it down and thought it HAD to be perfectly pin straight for it to be down. WRONG. I decided to stop heat then and there and by 19 I had lovely defined waves with ringlets at the ends... I got heaps of compliments on this, a lot of people didnt even believe it was natural after my years of straightening.
However, more recently I've taken to wearing my hair up again - despite my inept attempts at rad up dos. I'm really insecure about my profile and thought wearing it down would distract from how large I percieved my nose to be from the side, I also liked how it could hide the ruddiness of the sides of my cheeks. However in the past year I've gone through my own feminist journey and along with that I've learned to disregard a lot of what the beauty industry tells me a "perfect" woman looks like. I'm nicer to my skin and I'm generally learning to accept my facial structure and myself as beautiful regardless, just because I am. Not because of any prescribed ideal.
I can be versatile and be lovely either way when Im healthy and happy :)
...sorry for the essay/sappy story.

I don't feel a difference right now. My updos are wimpy and thin and are kind of "turd buns" so to speak. When its down my ends are thin and I feel icky about my hair then too.

I feel more beautiful with it down, definately. I used to almost never wear it up because I thought it made my face look fat but whenever I wear it up I get complements and am told it suits me more?
I have been wearing it up more recently due to its length, it not being in great condition and the summer heat here in Australia.
I love half-up styles and feel prettier with my hair like that than fully-up, but have been trying out some new buns today that I think look pretty so ill be having it in a bun more often now :)

I really feel beautiful when it's down. But, for my daily work routine, I feel that it's more important to look and feel pulled together. I wear it up to work and feel better that way.
Sometimes, I think that wearing it down is just for me and my family. They get so used to seeing it up that when it's down, they rave over the length and how pretty it is. That's not something I really want to share with everyone at work.

I like the looks of it down when it behaves - which is actually quite often now with TLHC! So pretty, and prettier still when my henna and panacea mixes from nightshade arrive :crush:
But I feel more put-together with my hair up, and more relaxed too since I know I am protecting it. When I have the money to buy some lovely hair sticks - atm I'm just using basic Claire's ones - I am sure I will like wearing my hair up even more. So that is currently what I prefer, and find more beautiful.
But I think when my hair gets to, say, hip length, its beauty when down will (I hope) be as breathtaking as some of the longhairs photos on here. And then, I still won't wear it down much, but I might find that style the most beautiful.

I have noticed I don't feel as confident or as pretty when I wear my hair up. This is strange because I used to feel the exact opposite. I have bought several beautiful hair forks and sticks and find myself not using them because of this. How do you feel, or is there a difference for you?
It's exactly the same for me. People tell me I look more pretty with it down, and I feel more pretty with it down. If I wear it up, I feel a little bland. I also bought more hairtoys to help me enjoy putting my hair up, but I'm not particularly skilled at doing it.
I have started to wear ponytails more, just to get my hair out of my face on windy days. I think I need to start being more practical with it.

Ah, yes! I also feel more "put together" with it up. I usually wear it up during work.
I have at last come to the point where I feel more pretty with it down :cheer: Before I was quite unhappy with my hair and did feel more pretty with it up. I also thought my hair sort of made me look tired if I wore it down, now I don't see it that way any more.

I have found for me, it depends on what I am doing.
If I am working on a job that calls for a professional look I shall go for a sleek updo and I feel maybe a bit more elegant with it up.
I love wearing it down or half up for a sexy wavy look...
my go to style is a simple braid though. Lara Croft style.
So really, it depends on my mood.

I look better, and therefore feel more beautiful, when it’s down. I’ve had people tell me that I look better with it down or that I should wear it down more often.
But I feel more comfortable with it up. So I wear it up most of the time. I still feel beautiful with it up though. I just know that for special occasions I could wear it down to add a little something.

Up = taking care of business, working
Down = free and carefree, showing off, enjoying not having to have it up.
So the associations are definitely positive for looking good with it down!

I feel more beautiful with it up.
Obviously, I belong to a minority in this case ;)
On some rare occasions, I feel more beautiful with my hair down (Renaissance fairs and such things), but on a daily basis, I love my updos! My hair is so much neater and prettier when it's up, and you don't get to see the taper/thinness of it. I also like the more sophisticated look an updo gives to my outfit and since I've discovered that I look really good in 40's/50's styles, and updo has become absolutely necessary ;)

Maybe it's a tie. I suppose it depends. Right now it's prolly when I wear my hair down since I do it so rarely. Almost a month since last time. I've almost forgotten what it feels like. So I guess I will really relish in the feeling when I get to wear it down next (which, with my stubbornness is prolly in about a year when I'm at BSL :P)

Not that much of a difference.
I feel better when it's up because it's safe and my natural bangs frame my face, which I like because it softens my face and makes me look pretty:rolleyes: and there are so many pretty updos out there.. but I also love having it down because I LOVE MY LENGTH:D, and I love to pass by people gawping at it;), though it wouldn't be so thick and pretty if not for the updos...
So yeah. I love both, but hair down is more of a treat for me.

I was unable to vote because I'm really not sure. I don't wear my hair down very often because it's too flyaway, and THAT is NOT sexy! But I know that if it behaved more like it does the day AFTER washing, I'd feel sexy that way. But updos can be so seductive-- they're so mature!

I like my hair down, which is why I don't bun my hair and when I do braid it, it's not but in a bun. I like my hair around my face as well. My face is round, and I think it hides some of the roundness when it's down.

I feel more "feminine" with my hair up. and more "beautiful" With my hair in pigtailed braids. I used to always keep my hair that way, but at this length they get caught up on everything at school, so I keep it in buns for the most part. When I'm done with college I will wear braids and half ups and other pretty "long do's."

Depends on the day. With my stick straight layered hair, some days, I just do NOT want to wear it down. At all. *rolls eyes* other days, it's BEAUTIFUL. On a good hair day I always feel more beautiful with it down. I rarely wear it that way because of tangles. :)

Like so many others, it depends! I like it up when it's cooperating, and down for the same reason. If it isn't looking good either way, it goes up as best I can. Length also plays into it, when I was above the shoulder, down was best, now that it's just below shoulder length, it's not working for me (it may also be that my haircut is growing out, I usually end up wearing it up for a while before finally trimming it ;) ) When it was BSL in high school, I loved it down but also loved the versatility in the ways I could "do" it up. I'm looking forward to that again.

I like it down, but there are certain times where it looks much better up.
On windy days, definitely up. Same with dreadfully hot days. Yesterday I had it down and came back from a walk with cottonwood all in it, plus it was windy so it was windblown, and 85 degrees so it was sweaty. Let's just say I didn't feel too pretty just then.
With dresses for work, I usually wear it up. I wear glasses (wish I could wear contacts or have Lasik but with bad astigmatism, that ain't happening). I think that's why I like it down more -- it draws less attention to my glasses!

Hmm...after a few months on LHC, my opinion has evolved. I like wearing it up even more now! Since I lost my teenage puppy fat, my face is no longer round and pudgy (I hated it), it is a nice shape, all cheekbones and jaw and straight nose and big eyes. I mean, it's not the most feminine of faces, and my skin isn't great, but a friend told me once that I look "regal", particularly in partial profile.
I dress and wear my hair to accentuate this effect. But then, I don't like looking or feeling "feminine" - I like looking sophisticated and well put-together, accentuating the features I like (my large difference in waist/hip measurements, the structure of my face, the shine of my hair, the colour of my eyes). The effect is spoilt, somehow, with hair down - I look ordinary again. I like the unique look I have, also with many 40s/50s styles, which seem to be flattered by having my hair up. I also feel "ready for anything" and practical, which are things I like to feel very much. It's probably the martial artist in me :)
I've also added to my hairtoy collection with a very few lovely pieces. I like wearing them very much, and I can't with my hair down! My hair is also voluminous and unruly, and even if it looks nice down at the start of the evening, it will slowly turn into a bush by the end.
I think I need a bit more length to weight it down...at least another foot :P

Another vote for "down." Even though I'm accumulating some pretty hair toys, the fact is that I wear my hair up for convenience and to protect my hair, and the hair toys are just to make it more fun. I think I look better with my hair framing my face. Also, the fact that my hair is beautiful makes me feel more beautiful. I rarely wear my hair down when I'm away from home anymore, which makes having my hair down even more special.

I seem to have replied to this thread earlier, but what the heck ^^ My views on this is more clear now than back then so here goes:
It's very interesting the way my view on long hair has changed. A few years ago I felt sort of teenage-naive-princessy-immature with my hair down, also I felt it dragged my face down making me look tired. Which became the reason I cut it short.
Now I feel I have mastered the way I wear my hair even if it is starting to be waist length. My view on long hair has changed from teenage-naive-princessy-immature to mature-womanly-fresh-hippie and freedom :)
When I want to stand out and look beautiful I wear my hair down with confidence. I don't feel that it drags my face down, quite the opposite. I like it the best when it is a little bit wavy, which is very easy to achieve. I just need to wear my hair in a bun for a few minutes.

I answered that I prefer to wear it down. I used to avoid wearing it up because I was so self-conscious of my side view what with my underbite and all. I've gotten over that having such a loving husband (a well loved woman is happy care-free one ^.^) and especially a job that requires I have my hair contained. Now it's because I feel too... I don't know. The saying about how a girl should let her hair down every once in a while, let loose. Well, I feel so constricted with my personality when it is up like I am repressed or something. It's so conservative to have one's hair up all the time. I prefer the wild look.To have your hair down it's like channeling your animal outwards to the world. That invigorates me and makes me feel... like lion. Passion released! With my bad-ass hair as nature intended it to be.
Granted, I love English braids. I would also be thrilled to do rope braids, once my hair is long enough to try those, having learned about them for the first time here at LHC, but joining with short hair. Other than hanging braids, it's half up.
In defense of hair up though, I do like my hair up during special occassions when you want to give off a demure/sophisticated/elegant air, but I've not much experience with anything more than a simple wrap around type bun and a high up pony-tail (if that even counts as an up-do). I was a teenager with more on her mind than hair and I didn't even know about the majority of some the things you could do with your hair out there.

I wear my hair up daily, so I may be a bit biased.
I picked I feel prettier with my hair up. I get more comments on my face and bone structure when it is up, they're always kind ones. When I wear it down it's to hide, I don't feel more beautiful, I hope it makes me less noticeable.
Though when I was running late to work the other day I showed up with it down and my coworkers were teasing and saying I was all sexy.

I like both, i think down i better for feeling confident overall, but elegant and sophisticated comes with up dos. But if my hair looks good, i am keeping it down. Even though I'd love to wear very long hair and make lots of updos, my facial features look better with hair framing the face.
That's why I've decided to make my hair look as healthy as possible with a short (as per LHC!) hair length of BSL, because what I wear daily is likely to create too many split ends.
However on the day when I was my hair though, it's so poofy that I'd rather wear a nice bun until the next day. Then the feeling of not looking my best is overriden by worry that people think I live wild in the woods or something!

I voted down. My hair is still too short to put up but when it was long I felt more beutiful when it was down. It could be because my SO always liked it down. (Of course I still wore it up when I wanted :p)

ATM, it's short and I have baby hairs growing out so I feel much more beautiful with it up right now. When it was waist+ I felt so beautiful with it down. It just depends on the condition and length.

I can't answer this, because it more has to do with what I do to my hair when it's up or down, as opposed to simply if it's up or down. I can feel like a bit of a slob either way, but if I put that little extra effort, I can feel beautiful, but in different ways when it's up or down.

Definitely down! I don't feel having my hair up really flatters my face, whereas I can kinda hide part of my face when my hair is down, softening it and making it more feminine. Also I look pretty much the same from the front no matter what updo I do, whereas with it down I look different depending on how I style it.

I couldn't decide which option to choose .. I like both, up and down, but I'm not sure which one I think is more beautiful ... I guess it depends if I have a good-hair day or a bad-hair day, and that applies to both options :p

I would like to wear my hair down, but unless I straighten it it just looks an unflattering, frizzy mess. So wearing it up wins by default, sadly. I've just gone and bought some Boots Curl Creme, after seeing it recommended on some threads here. If it works, maybe I'll be able to leave my hair down occasionally.

I voted down and even though now I will probably have to cut the having hair down for protection purposes when growing.
I really do think I look much better with my hair down or half-up rather than up. This is really strange since I didn't use to have my hair down for over a decade since I had been teased really badly about it by my "friends" at school who told me I looked like Jesus when I did.
Gladly I'm over that now and would have my hair down every time it's clean, but yeah, will probably have to find more attractive ways of keeping it up or just change my mindset of thinking I don't look good with my hair up. Just need to get used to looking good when it's up and even better when it's down :) Trying to stay positive.

I voted 'i don't feel a difference'. i think some of my updos are very feminine and get compliments on them as well as when I wear my hair down!

I voted down, but styling (not heat) makes a difference to. A well done updo is better than bushy down hair.

I voted down too. There's just something about it. I dunno, maybe it is feeling more feminine. It is the same reason I would never cut my hair short. I would feel so unattractive somehow, completely personal way of feeling. I suppose it is a mental thingie, but I can't help it lol

But you're avatar is great - I thought you were a down girl.

Me- down for sure. I feel slimier.
Just for 1 month now I'm learning about putting it up - I'm learning from LHC, and getting toys.
Till now, up= pony tail.

Down down down. Mostly because I wear it in a pony or a cinna bun the majority of the time.

I'd say down but I'm too self-conscious of my split ends... :(
In fact, I've been wearing my hair up more often as of late.

I feel really elegant with a nice neat updo. My hair is very tangly at the moment so it doesn't feel as nice. But I do feel really nice with freshly brushed hair with a few bits of my hair clipped back from my temples with a pretty clip.

Everyone always tells me how good it looks down (I never hear that when it is up LOL) and I do notice people are nicer to me when it is down as opposed to up, so there must be something to it...

For the moment, I rather wearing it down, so everybody can see I am a long hair lol.
But maybe it would change when I'll have longer hair.
But I rather wearing it in an half ponytail than just down.

I think hair down, natural texture is really sexy. I do really love the hair up look on myself as well, but I've been having some stubborn horomonal chin acne that's making hair-up a less appealing option. (UGH) Usually it's a 50/50 split.

My hair is my security blanket. I like how it feels on my ears and the sides of my face and my neck, and I get a little chill when it brushes my shoulders because then I know it's growing.

I have been wearing my hair up a lot since growing it out to the point where I sometimes feel overly conservative. This was not how I always felt but its how I have been feeling lately. I voted that I feel more beautiful with my hair down. I feel more carefree, sexy and younger.

When I had a cut that showed my curls to their full effect I always wore it down, but now that I'm growing it I love to just pull the sides back to a tail - so it's half up and half down.

I look and feel so much prettier and more confident when my hair is down. My long curly hair has kinda always been my "trademark." I don't feel as pretty with it up. But I'm wearing it up for a few months because I want to grow it out and retain as much length as I can. I plan on wearing it down closer to the fall or winter.

Wearing my hair down makes me feel MUCH better! The only time I would wear it up was if I had to, or if I could take the time to do an updo that appears nice enough.

Honestly, it depends on how my hair is behaving. :)
I guess when it's calm, smooth, shiny... I love it down. I feel pretty. But at the same time I DO suit it when it's up.
Nope. Can't decide!

Mmmm... difficult.
Until BSL, absolutely down. Now my fine hair is losing volume quickly, so they often just lay here.
I have mixed feelings about my face, because I have big sticking-out ears, but I usually look good with hair up. Everyone says I have the "short hair" face.

I used to like to practically hide behind it, now I feel confident with an updo as well. I noticed that if I wear something stylish or elegant, loose hair just looks too slovenly, but it perfectly matches my jeans-jumper/T-shirt-gym shoes-epic music in ears combo, muahhahah.

I don't have a drive to feel beautiful. I mostly wear my hair up for practical reasons but I will sometimes wear it down if it makes sense to do so. Shame there wasn't a cheese option.

I think that depends on a lot of variables...
When I feel unattractive with my hair up:
If my skin is breaking out, I know I should wear my hair up to keep oils off of it and stop the itchy feeling, but I want to hide them...
If it's really messy and ratty looking, that doesn't help.
When I feel pretty with my hair up:
GOOD SKIN DAYS!! :D yay!
If I'm....happy with my face? I have sensitive skin and on days my skin's really calm, I love having my hair up.
During hot weather, too! I hate having my hair down, it feels like a pile of towels on my head!
When I feel pretty with my hair down:
GOOD HAIR DAYS!!
Or if I've just done an SMT, I feel super confident.
When I feel unattractive with my hair down:
If my hair's messy, or in need of a trim.

I don't really have a preference. I think I look more elegant with it up so nearly always wear it up, also it protects the ends. I never leave the house without putting it up. But when I am home and relaxed, and my hair is washed and behaving, then I like to wear it down. Wearing it loose seems like a kind of nakedness to me in a way, something for only people who are close to me to see.
Maybe a bit like "loose" women in Victorian times, who wore "loose" hair as opposed to respectable women who wore their hair up - I guess I'm a bit the same.

I feel more beautiful when my hair looks beautiful.
Most of the time that will be up, because since I've passed waist, it's been easier to have beautiful hair when it's up in a fancy updo than down (wearing down is just so much work).

Down, definitely, or at least some form of it (braids, ponytails etc). I so wish I had the face for updos :( I just don't think it's flattering on me.
