Hmm. everytime i used rope braids to style my hair i ended up with more frizz. I'll give this another chance upon seeing the vid though :)

:) i was just logged into my own youtube channel, and watched this, it's a great tutorial isn't it. I recently cut my hair short (it's about shoulder length now) so i'll probably have to wait a few more months till i can test it out.

Hmmm...I haven't tried this yet,but I'm sure some grape seed oil, olive oil or coconut oil will help with the frizzies.

I like the tutorial, but I wonder if it would work so well on someone with straight hair. Has anyone with 1a/1b/1c tried it?

edit: maybe people with straight hair would need to do this with damp hair, or to add product. I know for sure my hair would NEVER hold a curl like that if it was dry.

I've done a speeded up version of this which did involve a bit of mousse and a hairdryer to set the braids. It gives me an 80's spiral perm look and LOADS of body to my hair. I liked the retro look, it wasn't as beautiful as the lady in the tutorial but she has longer hair than me so I'll try it again when my hair gets longer. Ordinary braids make my hair look very frizzy - so I do prefer this method.

Thanks for posting OP.

I prefer to rope braid my hair when damp before bed because I find it tangles less. Even then ut does not come out like this on the length (I don't do it at the top). Maybe some mousse would help but I know simple wet or dry sets don't last.

I bet this will be really useful to people with more responsive hair so thanks for sharing!

I want to try that. Not sure though that it would be comfortable to sleep with bobby pins let alone making them stay in place all night

I have super straight hair and I know that wouldnt hold without producy, ill still try it with damphair/bit of curl balm though!

Angeletti did a fab curl thread, its great for the 1a's if they want to join in the curl fun.
I highly reccommend it!

It doesn't look like she is doing a real rope braid. Like she is doing the wrapping without doing the twisting, if that even made sense to anyone beside me.

I too got a lot of frizz the one time I tried to do rope braid curls, but I started with wet hair and did do all that twisting stuff she did after...

Maybe I'll try this tonight!

I think I'm going to try this on dry hair before a shower. If I bun it, the steam helps make big pretty waves, so this should make nice spirals.

This is interesting, I'll definitely give it a try. I'm not too sure how well my hair will curl but i'm always on the lookout for heatless curls/waves so thank for posting!

I have straightish hair and I tried it last night... I ended up with a biiig mess this morning eep!
So much so that I had to tie it back really tight into a french roll to disguise it for work because it just looked like a mess hahaha
I dont think this method is for me

I tried it tonight ( 6 rope braids) and it didn't work :( The waves are weird, very messy with lots of frizz. Like Brighteyes said, she's not doing a real rope braid, maybe that's why my hair doesn't look like it's supposed to.. When I undo a small laced rope braid, I get very tight waves..weird. Her hair is very pretty.

1:st pic shows this lovely up-do. Second pic shows a little bit of the curl pattern I got. Sorry but I couldn't get any better "after" photo, It was really early in the morning and I was in a rush. The pics are actually taken outside :o And, yes, it was snowing.
The first real snowfall of the year

Since I don't need any lift at the crown (I don't like how my hair looks down so half-ups is as down as it gets), I wonder if two rose buns would produce nice curls.

I did the 2-twist method just like in her video, fingercombed after taking them out. Instead of blowdrying straight like she recommended, I air dried prior to twisting.

I only used 2 bobby pins per braid, though, and one started to fall out a bit during the night - you can see how the end is a little poofed on the left. I might try loosening the spiral on the way down to get more uniform curls (they get really tight on the bottom half). All in all though, I'm a fan!

Here's another picture in better lighting after I went through it with a wide tooth comb.

I'm kind of tempted to try this, just to see.
Actually, it might work better on my sister's straight hair. I think my natural curls might compete with it too much, plus the length will compete with everything.
Hmm..

See, the sock method turns into an absolute disaster of poof for me. I guess it really depends on your hair type whether the sock method or twist method works better for you.

I'm currently trying the method described in the first video (the one with the rope-braid thingies). I did rope braids; one in the back and two with the front/top hair. My hair's just been COed (was going to do it tomorrow but I started practising updos which made it pretty greasy :p) and it has spent some time in a towel turban, so it was merely damp and dried further as I combed it. Now, it's roped and pinned to my head a bit like she described (it might be a bit wonky at the ends of the front part; I wanted them pinned entirely, ends and all, and the ends were too long for the back of my head, so I sort of folded them up), and I've wrapped it in a scarf for the night, to try and not get loose hair pins all over my bed :p

Pics will be coming tomorrow, good or bad remains to be seen :D

I don't use this on myself but almost every night I put my little sister's BSL hair into two rope braids after she takes a shower, it works best on towel dried hair. her hair naturally has some wave in her hair but this enhances and evens it out (think Miley Cyrus). it turns out beautiful on her

*sobs* I want her hair, it's so pretty.

My hair is almost completely straight, and doesn't hold curls well except in one section, so I'd be interested to see how this would hold up in my hair.

I'm curious to try this. I have mostly straight hair that is fine but very thick and heavy so I'm not sure if it will work well but I'll give it a go :)
Only thing I'm concerned about are the ends...I don't want the dreaded stick ends with the rest being nice and wavy. I'll have to ponder on a way to remedy this!

Sadly, my hair would never dry using this method.

For the ends, could you possible put them on a small foam roller before you pin everything up?

God shes annoying. Her hair is stunning though. I think she straightened it first? I have naturally curly hair so I can't do this without flat ironing my hair first.

My concern with this is that I'll have a big split down the back of my head... I've put my hair in two french braids before, to make it crimpy, and it does, but it leaves my hair in two separate sections, which looks dumb. I feel like this would do the same thing.

Here's how it turned out. It's a bit messy, so maybe I should have had my hair a bit more damp to make them turn out a bit more defined or something. :p

I tried this earlier this week with slightly dampened, not wet hair.

I didn't get very nice waves, perhaps it would work better with very damp hair for me?

It was comfortable to sleep in, though.

ETA: It also made my little wispies in the front stick up funny.

This looks a little too much like damp rope braids . . . I did damp rope braids once and only once.

It was a disaster to untangle for some reason and as a 1a it also lasted all of about an hour. Probably not even that! I thought it might be an alternative to rag curls but I guess the rags tangle less than my hair on hair. If I finger combed my hair the way she does at the end to arrange it, there would be no curl left in my hair.

I think this method could work well for others though. :)

I tried it the last time I washed my hair, and I ended up with lovely little ringlets, though perhaps not as well defined as I would have liked. I think it was mainly because my hair was still quite damp when I took the rope braids out.

So I'm trying it again now, and this time I'll get my hair as dry as possible before I undo the braids. I really hope it works this time!

I love andreaschoice. The amount of sections curled seems like it wouldn't do the trick for me. And I assume other hair types that aren't naturally curly might look looser and limper. But overall it's a good technique.

This method isn't heatless, she requires curlies to blowdry their hair straight...

Well the OP said you could skip the blowdrying part, which would make it heatless.

I'm going to try this tonight. Pics will follow. :D

double posting to say I tried this, I'll update this post with pics after I get home from school. I didn't like the result much so it's going up in a bun for today.

ETA: Ok. So i did my twists damp and since they were too long to go straight back I pinned them like a cheaters crown braid around my head. I slept on them. Took them down in the morning. They looked smooth and fine where my hair was thicker and natural but on the ends they frizzed up horribly. Some parts were straight, I guess I didn't twist right. I put some coconut oil in it to tame it, and it didn't work well. I bunned it.I did like the volume it gave me though.

I do this all the time, except I don't pin it to my head, I'm very minimalist when it comes to pinning, products, etc. I just let several twists hang freely and sleep on them. but I find they appear somewhat flat and super twisty the next morning. I have naturally wavy hair that takes to styling well so I don't use any product. Next time I'll post pics, too!

It looks like it would be uncomfortable to sleep in if you have really long hair you would have a cake of rope braids on your head...
