View Full Version : How to protect curls/waves when sleeping?

My hair will get frizzy if I don't do something.

I've tried pineappling which works okay, but there's still some frizz; I've tried a shower cap, not comfortable; I've tried putting my hair above my head on my pillow, but I turn my head in my sleep, and my hair gets under my head, thus squashing my waves/curls. I do put mousse on when I have frizz, but it mostly turns sticky and junk.

So, any other ideas? :P

I'm not sure what pineappling is, but the technique I use when I want my wurls to be preserved for the next day is gathering my hair loosely into a huge topknot at the top of my head.

I use satin pillow cases. My hair was perma-frizz until I tried it. :blueeek:

Coconut oil works miracles. I lightly coat the worst offenders about every other day. CO wash daily, 'poo about 2x a week.

~ cones work for me, too if I want to back off the coconut oil.

You might want to try cassia. It makes your hair soft. Monteray Bay Spices sells it very reasonably.

I don't use any styling product on the back of my hair, but bangs need to be beat into submission with product and a flat iron. :whip:

What is pineappling?? Inquiring minds want to know.

That's pineappling in a nutshell. Your head is the fruit, and the hair is the stem... stalk... something. Evidently, I don't know much about actual pineapples.

You mean, like a plastic shower cap?

I love my satin sleep cap. My wurls still diminish overnight, but the frizz is cut down and I actually sleep better because I don't have to wake up with my hair caught under me.

I just have a cheapo one like this (http://www.stayonsatin.com/), but there are fancier versions out there that I'd like to try. Like these "Satin Sakks" (http://www.satinsakks.com/mainmenu.html), lots of room for hair! Or a real silk one from Tenderheaded (http://www.tenderheaded.com/sislbo.html) or Maverickwear (http://www.maverickwear.com/). The sleep cap is easily one of the best tips I've gotten from LHC; I don't know how I got along without one!

I put gel in my hair before pineappling, and I just scrunch out any of the crunchiness in the morning. It seems to help with the frizz a lot.

I do the 'pineapple' too when I want to preserve my curls/waves. (cute term btw)
I use a scrunchie and if it's being a real pain I'll get my hands wet to rid myself of some of the frizz before piling it up and loosely using a scrunchie. I have noticed that coconut oil and olive oil make my hair heavy and are not good for keeping my curls bouncy. I have fine/thin hair though. I also sleep on a satin pillow, just started doing that about a week ago and it seems to help. In the mornings I finger comb upside down and sometimes will scrunch with wet hands again to help revive.

A wave net. :flower: (Or hair net, I use a lightweight hairnet because it stays on better.) Take a leaf out of granny's book, hairnets were all the rage when women had to keep their curled 'dos in good repair until the weekly shampoo-and-set.

You should be able to find hairnets at any drugstore, they are quite cheap. Then either tuck your loose hair underneath a hairnet, or pineapple and put a net over it.

Works for me every time I know I won't have time to wash my hair in the morning, and my hair is only a bob. It should work even better with longer hair - hairnets hold better when they have something to hold on to. ;)
