All this talk about shampoo & conditioner makes me think of products that I used growing up & just loved. It brings back funny memories, some good & bad!

I remember:
Breck - remember the Breck girl? They came out with a line of conditioner and wow, it was like a miracle. After using it we would run a comb through our wet hair, amazed that we didn't have tangles. oh the memories....it took like half the bottle, but of course, we were kids.

No more tangles spray - well, do they even make this anymore? We would have to BEG my mother for this stuff.

Vidal Sasson - this may sound crazy, but my hair LOVED Vidal Sasson products. I would always buy up any that I found on a shelf, I remember the bottles were always dusty. I haven't seen that product since 1990-something.

Just was thinking of those products, and wondered if anyone would like to share some memories....

Growing up, I really liked the old school Herbal Essence shampoo (http://www.flickr.com/photos/tracis_retro/2780477843/). I was also really into Salon Selectives for a while, and then I moved on to the slightly less old school Herbal Essences (http://lh4.googleusercontent.com/public/JiFYEBFxH1Y9BVxAnvD9yg8LJdjc1bvQj5ySQeF3XYNKKqytIO 8hl7O5phdDZfXFMxhDi_j1RnkX7p_tJRqscjh-2dk4EaaagX1TdvFobvz48M8CVqz0XuOxDCPYx-xiJs0gSuJBgsWy3_HAM86UHd9kiFhytOdRLQUZ).

I remember the Timotei shampoo... It was discontinued here years ago, so I didn't think they actually still made it - turns out, they do. Although I doubt it's the same as the one I remember...

Also a fan of the old HE. I buy it up when I see it. I also liked the Thermasilk?? It was in a greyish purple bottle and was for heat styling (which I never did then) but it made my hair sooo soft.

Thermasilk, I remember loving that too. Recently I found a bottle of it in my basement bathroom. Lucky for me, I also found a bottle of my favorite Vidal Sasson, too. Hopefully it is OK to use shampoo & conditioner that is over 10 years old, ha ha!!

For me it was either Prell or Breck shampoo. Commercial conditioners were not real common but in the winter my mom would use Breck Creme Rinse to tame the static flyaways. It was pink and had to be mixed with water before pouring over the head.

As a teen I used Johnson's Baby Shampoo for a long time until the original Herbal Essence came out.

We were told to use Prell shampoo for washing in the Air Force barracks because it didn't leave a film.

Growing up, I remember my mother commenting that my hair looked its best when we had Alberto VO5 shampoo.

Then there was FOR LONG HAIR ONLY, which my hair didn't like. Maybe it wasn't long enough.

Herbal Essence, the green shampoo with the blonde girl in a bunch of flowers from the 70's.
Finesse in the 90's when it smelled good( todays stuff is different, yes they still make it)
Then I switched to Thermasilk, which was discontinued in 2006.
My all time fav was the Green Herbal Essence though. I just saw a bottle go on ebay for about 60.00!

Green Prell shampoo in the clear plastic tube was so awesome looking. I don't remember what it smelled like, but it was just amazing eye-candy at the time.

Salon Selectives - I remember bugging and bugging and bugging my mom to buy the 'poo and 'creme rinse' for me because my (at the time) ultra-cool and worldly cousin used it.

And ooh, Finesse! Totally loved the way that stuff smelled!

We were cheap when I was growing up, so it was Wella Balsam or Flex.

I miss the old herbal essences. The pink one and yellow both made my hair so lovely.

There was also alberto oasis, with different scents that blew my mind. I used the purple and green ones all the time. To this day nothing has ever smelled as good as they did. Plus they were so cost effective.

As a kid my mom would use 'Aquamarine.' Anybody else remember that? It smelled really nice. :) She also used 'Silkience' here and there. But she always detangled my hair with Johnson & Johnson 'No More Tangles.'

As a teen when I bought my own hair products it was VO5 & Flex when I was into balsam scents. Then this off brand called 'Ginza' - it was supposed to be Japanese and the bottle was black and had pretty fans on it. It smelled like spicy perfume. :eyebrows: I also used this line that Revlon made briefly based on different nations. I used the 'Latina' one even though I'm not a Latina because it was supposed to be for frizzy hair and it smelled like coconut(yes I've almost always bought hair products based on scent  ). I was also into Salon Selectives because who could resist that yummy apple scent?!?!

But my mainstay as a teen and adult was Pantene. I had it when it was in the colored bottles with the gold caps and I bought it even after they changed it. Sometimes I would also use the older (not vintage)Herbal Essences in the pink bottles for colored and damaged hair. :cloud9:

My mum made me use Prell when I was younger because I was apparently a grease ball. I just hated brushing my hair or washing it or having anything to do with it. I'm now allergic to sulfates. That stuff was so harsh it made my poor hair like straw. She also didn't believe in conditioner. This was the early 90's.

When I was a kid we used Suave or Vo5 alot. Head and Shoulders when I had dandruff spurts.

When I was little, there was a specific scent that I associated with my Grandma's beauty products. I never really knew what it was...then a few months ago I randomly tried Paul Mitchell Original Detangler and it was the exact scent I remember from Grandma's house! I can't imagine Grandma using Paul Mitchell but that scent is unmistakable.

When I was in high school I used Breck most of the time. I remember having Prell too. When Breck came out with their creme rinse it was like a miracle for my hair. In college I used Long and Silky when it came out. I would love to find out if there is something around now that would equate with Long and Silky.

I just remembered another shampoo back when I was a really small child. It came in a jar and was pink. Does anyone else remember this? It might have been called Lustrecreme or something like that. I remember my Mom or older sister shampooing my hair with this. It smelled really nice if I remember correct. Seems like the house next door had the same jar of this shampoo sitting in their bathtub.

Here's a picture of a 1960's era ad for Lustre creme:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/pinkponk/517197642/

I used Breck, then moved on to Head shampoo and conditioner. I loved that stuff. Pink, fruity smelling shampoo and thick, white coconutty conditioner. I still miss it.

I tried Herbal Essence once. (The original one. Back in the dark ages.) HATED it. I might as well have washed my hair in pine sap it was so sticky.

When I was really little, I was enthralled by how pretty Prell looked.

When I was little, that green Prell in the tube was awesome; the way the air bubble would move through it was almost as hypnotic as a lava lamp.
My mom always used Flex Balsam & Protein, until Faberge Organics came along. I've been seeing the Flex at my local 99Cent store, and am half tempted to get some just for the nostalgic smell. I loooved the Faberge Organics' smell; I'd use that again in a heartbeat if they brought it back.

I still have a sample bottle of Thermasilk, which I've never tried and probably won't, since I found my hair dislikes heat. If you find that yours is still okay to use, do you think I should give it away on the swap board or something? From this thread it looks like a lot of people were fans, and it seems wasteful.

Rusika 1, thank you for the link to the ad for Lustre Creme! That is the stuff! I think we quit using it in our household when I was a child because my Dad and Brother did not like the fact that it was pink. Pretty sure that's when we switched to Prell.

Hey Aria:
I think you should put it on the swap board. I used my old bottle and my hair is fine. There might be someone who wants it for the "nostalgia" or just for some "free smells". The brain has that important limbic area and the olfactory area ties smells to memories. Someone might want to just open up the bottle and smell it to re-live some old memories!!

Thanks everybody for participating in this thread. Growing my hair has made me have memories of past shampoo/conditioners and I thought it would be fun to share!

So many memories came up! Blast from the Past.

We always used Prell, guess that's what mom bought.

Once I was old enough to shop for myself, I loved Lemon Up, Body on Tap and Faberge, but I think I used Flex Balsam and Protein the longest.

Got a little older and was driving myself to the salon (instead of being taken to whatever mysterious place I went when someone else was in charge), and discovered some fabulous shampoo that smelled like green apples. Loved that scent, but have no idea what brand it was, just that I bought it at the salon I visited back then, and then lost track when I started going elsewhere. The bottles weren't huge.

Oh gosh, does anyone remember Long'n'Silky or something like that (it came in an opaque, pale blue bottle and I adored its scent). I hated the scent of the original herbal essences shampoo, and my mom loved body on tap. Other than that, she alternated between breck and prell (I liked the "pearl" ad in which a woman dropped a pearl earring into a bottle of prell to show how thick and rich it was - yeeikes). We also occasionally had alberto VO5, and I may be remembering this incorrectly, Alberto VO5 creme rinse? It wasn't really a conditioner per se, but was intended to minimize the snarls post-wash. I got lots of those.

I also tried "gee, your hair smells terrific" but it didn't smell all that terrific on me. My brother told me my head smelled like janitor in a drum after I used it the first time. :shudder:

My mom always bought Prell. Do you remember the commercial for it with the white pearl dropped into the bottle to show how thick and therefore, luxuriant it was?

When I was 16 I started buying my own shampoo: Herbal Essence, Flex Balsam and Aquamarine were my favorites. I saw Flex Balsam a few years ago at a dollar store or something like that. Shocked, I was! Didn't know it was still made.

I LOVE Paul Mitchell Detangler!!! It's the one with the carrot on the label. When I'm in a salon I always go over and smell it and read the ingredients...crazy, I know! Cool Thread!
I loved the original Herbal Essences - the green one - and remember when they came out with a conditioner - also in a green bottle - but i think the conditioner was white... for a while (maybe still?) you could still buy these in Mexico and I would always buy them when I was there. I haven't seen them in our mexican stores here though.

Also loved Yucca Dew! And Vidal Sasson also worked amazing on my hair too! Remember the Finishing Rinse?
I can still remember the smell.

Later I used Short and Sassy and loved it too.

Funny, Vidal Sasson and Short and Sassy both had hydrolized animal protein and my hair loved it!!! Now days my hair hates protein... maybe it was the animal protein that worked better? Most of the protein I've tried the past few years has been silk or wheat not animal based... hmmm... maybe this is why the original Aussie 3 minute miracle worked so well in the past.

I also remember Prell but I don't remember using it - and Breck too! I can still remember the way both of these smell so I must have used them.

Oh and I also loved Fabrege Organics original one - the one with honey or something...

I just found out about a brand called Vanart that is Mexican and they have an herbal shampoo that is very similar to the Original HE. It is even available in some Walmarts. I checked and it is stocked by a couple of Walmarts in the area but not real close to me. I do have a couple of Mexican markets in my town so I will check them out and see if they carry it so I can smell it. I would love to find a duplicate. I have ordered fragrance oil that supposedly duplicates the scent but they are all too fruity, especially heavy on the melon.

The quest continues.......

hmmm
i wonder if i would be allergic to this now... i have become so sensitive to fragrances :(

we have a TON of mexican groceries here and they sell Vanart - but i've never smelled any of them... i suppose this would be the green one?

this one?
http://www.vanart.com.mx/
(click on classic and pick the green one hierbas)

these are VERY cheap shampoos btw... in HUGE bottles!!!

ingredients: Water/Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate/Ammonium Laureth Sulfate/Cocamidopropyl Betaine/Cocamide Dea/Sodium Chloride/Fragrance/Polyquarternium-7/Citric Acid/Tetrasodium Edta/Methylchloroisothiazolinone/Methylisothiazolinone/Peg 115M/Fd&C Yellow #5/Fd&C Blue #1

it sounds a little too close to dishwashing detergent for me :( but you do get 32 ounces - so if you don't like it for your hair you could wash dishes with it LOL
let me know if you try it and it is gentle enough... this amount would last me the rest of my life!!! i have not used liquid shampoo in so long that i would probably just put one drop in a liter of water...

Maybe you could use a dab for perfume - or stick some in oil or something (a drop?) just for the smell...

hmmm maybe if you mixed it with oil it would work like an oil shampoo?

Next time I go there I will definitely smell it. Like I said - it is very cheap - so I might buy some and make an oil shampoo with it and just try it... if I can handle the fragrance these days that is...
I am allergic to sooo many fragrances now :(

eta: i bought some of this and tried it VERY diluted - 1 tsp. in 9 ounces of water with a little coconut oil added.
i ended up being so allergic to it that i had to re-wash my hair!!! i am SO GLAD i didn't try using it full strength.
:( it sucks because it smells so good!!! i gave the entire bottle to my bf and he will probably love it... sigh.
