View Full Version : My wood comb broke *sobs*

I need some sympathy from anyone who can give it. My Bath and Body Works wood comb that I bought last year just broke in half. I was combing my hair and all of the sudden I felt that it was broken in two O_O It not only had sentimental value, but it was the best comb I've ever had. Can anyone cheer my hair up with tales of sturdy wide-toothed dream combs? I will probably be putting my poor comb to rest soon. It was a good comb, and made from trees in protected forests.

I remember when my comb broke months ago. I almost cried. I know what you're going through.
*dramatically* I thought I would never love again... until that horn comb stole my heart.
*coughs* So, yes, you definately have my sympathy. I'm sorry about your comb.

Both my horn combs are missing teeth :( It's extremely odd, because it's in the same place on the comb and roughly the same distance (though they have different thickness tines) so maybe it's cuz I put the most stress on that area...
But I feel for you. It's heart wrenching. I can still use my combs... but it's just so sad :wail:

Oh no! I am so sorry!
I'm sure there are sturdier combs out there, and probably other LHCers will tell you where they are. I've seen and been tempted by well-made, sturdy looking wooden combs that were more expensive than my Bath and Bodyworks comb . . . but I do love that little four-dollar comb with all my hair-t.
You have my sympathy.
Hey, maybe you can sand the break and just have two small combs. Like those hair picks we all used back in the days of perms.

R.I.P wooden comb. I'm sorry to hear that.
I understand how you feel, my favourite horn comb broke recently. :(
OMG AJoifulNoise I remember that! You posted pictures? That was really sad too.

Aw, losing a hair tool is like losing a friend! Well, sort of... May I suggest getting a hairsense comb, since now you are in need of one? http://hairsense.com/
I have this one, for over a year now http://hairsense.com/images/206.jpg and it's been wonderful.

Thank you all for your sympathy! :flowers:
And for making me LOL too ;)
I am thinking that maybe I could just use the two halves. The edges don't seem very splintery. Can I use a nail-file for filing them?

The first thing I thought was "I have to take a picture" and then got upset after realizing that my camera's batteries are dead.

Oh, so sad....but maybe you really could sand the ends and continue using the smaller, yet well loved comb bits?

I feel your pain. I think I would cry if my favorite comb broke. I've been wanting to get a couple of back up combs, just in case. I hope you find a new comb to love!

That doesn't look so bad. Sand them down and now you have two combs, one for purse and one for pocket. :) I actually have a small wooden comb about the size of your smaller broken half, I keep it in my purse.

Um why not just pick up another one? For $5 it's worth it to me. I have had mine for a while. If it breaks i will definitely buy another one.

Oh, I´m so sorry to hear that... I had exactly the same one which I´ve bought on my trip to England, but I lost it several month after purchasing it. I was so sad, because it was the best comb I´ve ever had and at that time it was very difficult if possible to get such a good wooden comb in my country. As soon as Body shop was open here I got it again :D and was happy again. I hope a new nice comb will replace and you will like it as the old one.

Thank you, everyone, for your responses and tips :flowers: While I am keeping the two pieces for now, I think I need a bigger comb than each individual small section can offer. The reason I haven't just hopped over to Bath and Body Works is because I am somewhat bedridden right now and there are no stores conveniently located. They do not sell the comb online from what I can tell :(
Here are some combs I am considering buying from Hairsense. Any thoughts or opinions?

I have the same comb from the Body Shop. I've dropped it on the tile floor in my bathroom any number of times in the past three years and it's only chipped a couple of tines (which I sanded down). I use it daily. If it broke like yours did I'd be so upset!
Hugs and lots of sympathy! :grouphug: :blossom:
RIP birthmarkie's comb -- may it rest in pieces.

What is your hairtype? I think unless you have some seriously thick hair or are a curly the third one pictured would be a little too wide. The first one is pretty similar to your late wood comb, and the last one is the one I have. I love it dearly, it's very strong and has never shown any signs of breaking, plus I like the handle, it makes it feel more like a brush which is was I was used to before. I also have a Deman brush that works well and is nearly unbreakable, are you a strictly comb person?

I'm not sure what my hairtype is, actually. Strangly and straw-like? :p I think it is 1a, but it gets terribly knotted and tangled :(
But you and I seem to have similar combing/brushing needs!
I bought the comb that you have! I was relieved that you have that one as well, since I didn't check the thread before purchasing. D'oh. I also treated myself to a new BBB. Retail therapy :o I have a ceramic round Denman, but I need new brush that is gentle since I don't use the Denman for whatever reason.

Hi Everyone,
I just wanted to write a quick update for all of you who showed your support during my time of need! :flowers: :flowers: :flowers:
I really like my new comb from Hairsense and I am actually starting to love it.
I also like my new BBB very much.
They both seem perfect and with any luck, they will last more than a year.

It is REALLY hard to beat a Kent Comb. They're smooth as glass, no seams at all, and are wonderful combs. (I have probably eight of them) I got most of mine at www.uncommonscents.com
Also, MasonPearson makes a killer BBB and also good combs (similar to Kent) One thing I want to get when I'm in England is another Kent. There'll be something special about getting a Kent FROM England (that's where they're from originally). I have an MP from England, sent by another member here (hi, Siobhan!) and I love it! MP combs and brushes can be had reasonably from www.ballbeauty.com
Kent Combs and MP combs totally ROCK! They glide through the hair like buttah, Baby!
ETA: Oops, sorry, I didn't read the second page to see that you'd already replaced 'em. Those hand-sawn combs are really kickin' aren't they! (this is what MP and Kents are, too)

No worries, LJ.
I have a Mason Pearson comb that I also love, but I needed something with wider teeth and the Hairsense one works great.

I think in the case of both of you, is not only is it a special item but it's also made from natural sources. I think it's not such a big deal if it's a generic plastic comb...even if you really like it!

Actually, my broken comb was plastic. But, I had put a lot of work in to it (filing, smoothing, etc). I just get too attached to stuff!

Yes, that was part of it. It was certifiedly eco-friendly -- whatever that means. But also, I got it while traveling and it had a lot of sentimental value. Now I treasure the memories even more though (she says wistfully).

The MP comb I was referring to is known as "the rake", and its teeth are as wide as the wooden comb you showed, I believe. And Peacenik is right about Ric the Combmaker ( www.combmaker.com ) He makes lovely combs (I own two and have given-as-gifts two others.)
