So after all the stuff I have tried, Pantene S&C works best for my hair. Seriously, I am not sure why the stuff gets such a bad rap. I have had stylists compliment my hair, ask me what I use and then tell me how horrible I am for using Pantene. I have tried cone free, sulfate free, all kinds of things in the last 18 months since finding LHC and Pantene is the best for me.
I just wondered if anyone else is willing to confess their love for this taboo product. And I don't use anything special, just the smooth and sleek variety. And I always get the shampoo and conditioner in one, then still use the conditioner after. I have used Pantene since the mid 90's. I think I will cry of they ever go out of business.
I do clarifies once a month or so, ACV rinses once every two weeks or so and use coconut oil between washes. I wash once a week or twice, depending. My hair was really in good shape when I found LHC, I am not sure why I changed anything. I guess I just figured that in order to grow longer I needed to do something different. Plus you read about how bad cones and sulfates are...

I remember using and really liking the pantene smooth and sleek stuff waaay back (late 90s to about 2003)... then I developed major sensitivities to a lot of commercial stuff (which I now think coincided with going vegetarian). Since I switched back to an omnivore diet this past couple months, a lot of those sensitivities seemed to have vanished, which opens up commercial products again. I'm finding my hair really does love the 'cones... My current favorite is John Frieda's Sheer Blonde Go Blonder - doesn't do anything color-wise for me - but its the most soft and silky hair I've had in forever.
I might give pantene a shot again though - just to revisit it, if nothing else :-) If it works as well as the Frieda stuff, it'll give me yet another option for hair products :-)

I don't know why Pantene gets such a bad rap either. I have fairly sensitive skin, but when I needed to use cones after damaging my hair, I used Pantene for a long time, and it saved my hair and didn't cause me any skin irritation.
As long as one knows about clarifying when using cones, it seems to work great. I don't think it's any worse than any other product I've tried, and it's much better than many.
Obviously some people will have a bad reaction to it, or it won't be the right consistency for them, but that goes for every product.

I asked the one long-hair at work about her hair. Pantene, and her hair is wonderfully thick and shiny! It is not for me, though it has been years since I tried it, but obviously it works for some people. Stick with what works.

I used Pantene for over a decade through the 90s and into the early 2000s. My hair was at its longest (past waist) then and pretty healthy even though I killed it with chemicals and heat - it still grew.
I mainly changed products because the fragrance changed. lol They also changed the formula so it didn't work quite as well as before.
Recently I tried the new version and while I hated the Classic Care conditioner(what I used to use in the older version) I am starting to like the Med-Thick Frizzy to Smooth line. I'm still not in love with the new fragrance though. :(
I don't get all the Pantene hate either.
At least 90% of people I know with long hair(past waist) use it. The rest use something like Tresemme or Mane & Tail. None co-wash or use oils, butter, or shampoo bars etc.

I stopped using it when they changed the formula and scent of the one I used. This was in about 2001. I hold grudges.
However, if I was at a friend's house and it was all that was available I wouldn't really hesitate to use it.

I've used it for forever...stopped for awhile to try different stuff while my hair was short. I had no idea they changed the formula but couldn't find the one I used. I've gone back to using it in rotation with others. I got the one for colored hair.
When I used it before, I washed and blow dried my hair daily and it was at tailbone. I like Pantene plenty.

Pantene just made my hair feel stiff, is all. I think in some hairtypes it can cause buildup really quickly.
As for the whole "oooo cones and sulfates are so baddddd!!!" thing, it depends on how you prefer your hair to feel, how your hair reacts, whether you care... it's not really a big deal. I personally went cone and sulfate free because my hair is so temperamental that the buildup cycles my hair went through from conventional products was doing more harm than good.

I use the "power shots" twice a week and theyre heaven. I have tried alot of other stuff and really I always come back to these, they are so amazing.
I heard the bad rep. but for me this is what makes my hair fab, no matter how horrid my hair feels, ten mins with a power shot on and its like silk and amazing. I cant praise them enough, especially as theyre in teeny weeny squeezy tubes too so I can take them on holiday or when I go travel to see my dbf (who dosent even own a comb)
Can a girl ask for more :p

I use Suave's Daily Clarifying S & C. My mom is really crazy about saving money so I never really got the chance to try different shampoos. However, from the few shampoos that I have tried, the one I use now works best in cleaning and removing all the dirt and oils from my hair. Not so keen on the conditioner though..it's just ok at best.
My point: if it works then it doesn't really matter what other people think.

I color treated my hair back in the 90's as well. I have always gotten comments on the health of my hair while using Pantene. I did not notice a fragrance change...hmm...but I like the fragrance really well. They have changed their formula some and it does not seem to be as good as it used to but still the best for me.

I use cones and sulphates but pantene makes my brittle hair even more brittle. So much so that the ends will snap off every time I'd brush it. So no pantene for me, but it does work well for my mother's thin baby soft hair.

Hmm.. I don't mind Pantene, but Garnier Fructis is my hair love, as everything it makes works wonderfully in my hair, so I have learned not to stray away. Pantene made my hair soft and shiny as well, just not as much as Garnier. I've never witnessed anyone shaking their head at Pantene, so I'm not sure.

Pantene makes me break out in horrible huge cysts all over my scalp so I have only tried it a time or two and can't say whether it would be good or bad for my hair. Lots of brands make me break out, however, so I don't consider Pantene particularly evil. I think that whatever works for you is what you should stick with.

I really liked Pantene until they changed their formulas and came out with this new "specialized for your hair type" stuff... I tried every one except for fine hair... hated them all. They ruined a perfectly good product!
Now all Pantene does is make my scalp greasy and my hair dry.... what is with that?!?

I use the Pantene Naturals moisturizing conditioner, it has some natural plant extracts in it which I like. I have also used the Pantene Relaxed and Natural conditioner as it has coconut and jojoba oil in it. I like Pantene, but sometimes it can get heavy.

If you liked the Smooth and Sleek line you might want to try something from Pantene's NatureFusion Smooth Vitality Line:
http://www.drugstore.com/search/search_results.asp?N=0&Ntx=mode%2Bmatchallpartial&Ntk=All&Ntt=pantene+nature+fusion
Or their Medium - Thick Hair Solutions: Frizzy to Smooth Line:
http://www.drugstore.com/search/search_results.asp?N=0&Ntx=mode%2Bmatchallpartial&Ntk=All&Ntt=pantene+medium+frizzy+to+smooth
They also have treatments in their Hair Solutions lines if you need those.
I've only used the latter duo - Med-Thick / Frizzy to Smooth.
I think it's ok and definitely smooths things down, but I'm not as in love with it as I was the older Pantene products which left my hair silky and light but well conditioned. The new ones are not quite as moisturizing and seem a bit heavier. I also think they overdid it with the choices. There's WAAAAAAAY too many. I had to stare at literally dozens of bottles before I decided what to get.
One good thing I can say is that CVS sells little sample shampoo & conditioner duos for like $3 I think. That way you can try it out before investing in a full size bottle.
I'm (not so)secretly hoping no one will buy the new line and they'll bring back all the old products. :p

I used to love the old Classic Care with blue writing back in the 90s and early 2000s, but they changed the formula and now it doesn't work with my hair anymore. I have my best luck with their conditioners- especially the deep treatments, they work great!

I've used Pantene as my go-to for many years. Every once and a while, I'll try something different just to see if it's better, but I've never found a product that is. Except maybe Infusium. Not sure why I don't buy it. Stupid brand loyalty, I guess.

So am I correct in understanding that the only thing on the shelves now is the new line and the nature fusion stuff? That just totally stinks! Pantene and I got along quite well but now I'm totally gun-shy to try this new stuff.
Can anyone recommend a comparable product? Dove? Garnier? I have some left over Beautiful Lengths but I hate to plow through it if it can't be replaced. So sad! :(

After trying the newer versions of Pantene, I'm thinking the most comparable brand would be a generic version(CVS, Walgreens, Kmart, etc.) of Pantene and hope they don't change their formulas to match the new formulas.
From what I remember of using the generics in the past, the closest were CVS and Walgreens.
Dove is kinda close as is Infusium(or at least Infusium was, I think they changed their formulas too ), but they aren't a 100% match.
Hope that helps. :flower:

Yes, thank you! :) I've never tried the CVS version before....for some reason I was thinking Pantene had some exclusive formula that they didn't sell to the stores. Guess I never paid that close of attention. lol

My hair, after over 30 years of loving Pantene, hasn't loved this new incarnation. Lucky for me, the local Big Lots still has the old Pantene until I buy them out.
However, I was shopping the other day and say Pantene's Beautiful Length repackaged but new on the shelf. I think it was in Walgreens. I just hope they didn't change the formula.
Thank you so much for sharing what's similar to the old Pantene! I was getting ready to ask the same thing.

I'm a frequent user of Pantene. I love it. My bf loves the smell of it. :D I clarify once a month or so with Neutrogena's clarifying shampoo and frequently do ACV rinses.
I tried using natural hair care products with no-cones, etc., and my hair looked like hell. Greasy & flat.

I'm using pantene myself right now, although only about every 3 washes. I just got some ACV, so I'll probably do a rinse and clarify with an SLS shampoo in another couple washes, but for now I love how pantene makes my hair feel!

Yeah, it sucks. :(
They also added isopropyl alcohol to almost all of their conditioners. :shake:
The only lines that seem to be left over are the Beautiful Lengths line and Relaxed & Natural line. I don't have my old bottles to see if the ingredients have changed. But they have changed the Beautiful Lengths line enough to have like 3 different versions - one for frizz, one for shine, and one for 'defense.' The Relaxed & Natural line's conditioner has isopropyl alcohol now.
I'd really like to know who's bright idea it was over at Pantene to change a successful haircare line and butcher it into 50 eleven different unrecognizable varieties most of which contain drying alcohols and don't work as well as the originals? :crazyq:

WHOA what are these? I have never heard of them! Are they with the shampoo?
Its the pantene pro-v restoratives range "breakage defense" 4 rinse out single dosage treatments. (leave on for 20 mins rather than ten- you get hair like silk). they come in a little square box and are usually just with the rest of the display.
I really cannot praise these babies high enough, I dont know how they arent more talked about because man alive they do exactly what it says on the box (and travel size too!!!)
Its just phenomenal, no matter what ive done to my hair these have just fixed it.
Honey is amazing too mixed in with it, fab really deep treatment (but I wouldnt do it unless you want super duper slippy hair/trying to combat dye damage) Once a month with this usually sorts my hair out a treat for the rest of it.
Hehe can you tell I love them :p
EDIT: Just read the above posts, what on earth were they thinking of??? Im angry! Im going to stock up at my local shop before its too late. Grrrr
We should all send in pics of our long shiny hair and protest that they are too good to loose!

I used to love a few of the old lines.
I tried the new line and actually returned it. I never do that.
I bought the line for fine hair and it left my hair sticky, grabby and dry. It felt like I had used hairspray.
I hate that they broke something that worked so well. Are they trying to ruin the company?
As for the person who asked what to use as a substitute- I just bought Herbal Essences Long Term Relationship and think the results are very similar to the old Pantene.
Same silkiness. I can run my fingers all the way to through to the end without hitting a snag.
I won't buy any more of the new Pantene. They will have to bring the old lines back before I would ever go back to them.
P.S. I just googled and found that both Pantene and Herbal Essences are owned by the same company so they may be very similar to each other.

To the bold - that's so funny! My hair seems to hate most of the newer Herbal Essences products too. :( So far I've tried the Hello Hydration, None of Your Frizzness, Long Term Relationship, Color Me Happy, and Hydralicious. The closest my hair gets to liking it is the Color Me Happy, but it still doesn't like it as much as the old shampoo & conditioner in the pink bottle for dry damaged hair. I'm glad it works for you though and hope it works for others too. :)

Yeah, that confuses me too.
They have 3 or 4 different varieties of each line and there are, what - 5 or 6 different lines?!?!
It's like they want you to be confused and buy the wrong thing. There's no equivalent to the old lines so that you can find what you used to use. Instead I guess you're supposed to read all the bottles in the store for 2 hours until you happen upon what you think might work for your hair? :disgust:
I can't say I would mind so much if the formulations were better than before. But of the ones I've tried - they're not.
I might check out those ampules though. I used to really like Pantene's deep treatments and swore by their 3 minute treatment ever since it came out(in the big full size conditioner bottle that they later paired down to a little tube, but it still worked). I think they used to have little vials of something a million years ago(like 20 lol), but they were more a liquid. I loved those things. :crush:
If the ampules or a deep treatment are a total bust then I'm just done with Pantene. :(
unless of course they change the formula back

Heck i'm so old I used the original Herbal Essences in the old bottle with the woman on the front and the dark green herbally smelling shampoo.
It was the best! I loved it.
Now, if a shampoo/condtioner makes my hair silky and i'm able to run my fingers through it without getting it snagged on one of my many grays, i'm happy.
Also, if it keeps those same grays laying down nicely instead of standing up like springs that don't belong on my head with the rest of my well behaved brown, i'm good.
But not with the new line of Pantene.

At least 90% of people I know with long hair(past waist) use it. The rest use something like Tresemme or Mane & Tail. None co-wash or use oils, butter, or shampoo bars etc.
ahaha I read this, and realized that I use Mane & Tail. Personally, I had Pantene Frizzy to Smooth too, and it made me lose my hair. All I have to try now is Tresemme! ahaha. So much for curly, thick hair! :cheese:

Maybe they'll listen to your hair more since it's longer? :p

OK. I finally sat down and typed out a long, detailed email to Pantene's customer service, explaining that I have been a loyal customer for 15 years despite my numerous attempts to "upgrade" to pricier systems which inevitably turned out to be less effective.
I concluded with a request for their recommended replacement to the Ice Shine products, and reiterated the subpar performance of the numerous products I have already tried in the new collections.
I may also have implied that killing off established product lines during a recession is generally considered unwise business strategy (^(oo)^)v

I did the same thing after trying their "new" Classic Care conditioner. They just offered me a free product.
I'm hoping they'll get enough letters like ours and bring back the old formulas.
I mean, how cost effective is it to have 50 eleven different varieties of 5 or 6 different lines all in the same hair care brand? If nothing else - besides losing loyal customers who can't find their usual products- there's the cost of the bottles & labels alone. Plus they changed the ingredients. It's possible the new ingredient formulas are cheaper but when you're making so many more of them, it's a huge gamble. There was really no reason to do all this.

The thing is, I suspect they're not. After reading all of the website literature, I have a very, very strong suspicion that it's the same 5 or six basic formulas in each category, plus one specific ingredient per hair type (fine, medium, curly, etc.) that gets added to those same 5 or 6 basic formulas. Voilà, 50 so-called "customized solutions"
I used to cover contract manufacturing companies when I was in finance

Okay, so I've been using the Dove damage line for some weeks now, so my hair has already been pretty smooth but doesn't retain moisture after a day or so (probably because it was bleached so heavily). I did it last night, and let my hair air dry before sleeping on it. I woke up to very sleek, but very full hair with a ton of shine, and it still seems moisturized. Whether it stays that way is anybody's guess, but for now I'm quite pleased. It isn't that smooth slipperyness that most complain is their main gripe with cones, but rather a manageable smoothness. It says to use every few days for supremely damaged hair; since there's 5 ampoules, I might do one once a week therabouts until I can buy more :) Hope that helps!

I think it's from henna because I've never had this problem and it's the only thing I've been doing with my hair.

Since I've been trying so many of the new formulations in an attempt to find a good substitute for my beloved Ice Shine products, I thought I'd share the results here. I have 1a, medium, borderline i/ii East Asian hair, and I've ranked each product (including Ice Shine, for reference) on a 1-5 scale for shine, detangling and softness:
Ice Shine
Shine - 5
Detangling - 5
Softness - 4Color Preserve Shine (note: my hair is not and has never been colored)
Shine - 3.5
Detangling - 4
Softness - 5Medium-Thick Hair Solutions Frizzy to Smooth
Shine - 3
Detangling - 4
Softness - 4 Medium-Thick Hair Solutions Breakage to Strength
Shine - 3
Detangling - 3
Softness - 3 Fine Hair Solutions Dry to Moisturized
Shine - 2
Detangling - 2
Softness - 3Nature Fusion Smooth Vitality
Shine - 1
Detangling - 1.5
Softness - 3 Hopefully others find this helpful - I'd love to hear about everyone else's experiences too (^(oo)^)v

I am a Pantene fan for conditioners only, I don't like their shampoos at all so far.
I've tried the new MEDIUM-THICK HAIR SOLUTIONS DRY TO MOISTURIZED CONDITIONER and the result was ok, it was pretty weighted down and the amount of shine was probably just as much as I get with herbal essences.
I had completely a different reaction to RESTORE BEAUTIFUL LENGTHS BREAKAGE DEFENSE CONDITIONER. This thing makes my hair supershiny like nothing else. It says it's for breakage, but doesn't really list any protein, and looks safe for me. I only use it on length now once in a while.

Remember the message I sent to Pantene, asking for the closest possible product to Ice Shine? I just received a great example of completely inept customer relationship management . . . I mean, they should put this in a marketing textbook in a huge red box labeled "NEVER DO THIS, especially to people who have been loyal customers for 10+ years"
Thanks for contacting Pantene.
I’m sorry to hear you’re disappointed in the recent changes made to Pantene. We understand how frustrating it can be when your favorite products are changed for one reason or another. Our Pantene consumers told us we needed to make it simpler to find the right product, and we listened. Please be assured I’m sharing your comments with the rest of the Pantene Team.
Since I don’t have a recommendation for you at this time, you may want to check our brand websites for information about our current products. You might find a new favorite!
Thanks again for getting in touch!

Ugh. That's similar to the message I received.:
Thanks for contacting Pantene.
I'm sorry your Pantene Classic Care Solutions left your hair dry and stiff, and that you're not satisfied with the formulation changes. We have many checkpoints along our manufacturing lines to ensure the quality of both our products and packaging, so your report is unexpected. Please be assured I’m sharing your comments with the rest of our team.
Pantene will be launching a reinvention of its brand structure on May 25th based on consumer feedback. Your satisfaction is important to us so we’d like to send complimentary coupons to try one of our other pantene products. Please respond with your complete name and mailing address. Once we receive your information, you can expect to hear from us within the next 2-3 weeks.
Thanks again for writing.

I don't mind the new line, but I find it very limiting. I found the old line had more versitilty. I do enjoy color safe products, and I have to say the volumizing shampoo made my hair freaked out---gave it to a friend with fine hair and he is shocked at how much volume it gave his hair.

I think Pantene changes their line when Herbal Essence does--they always seem to change around the same time. I switched to Pantene when HE changed their clarifying shampoo, and now use Head and Shoulders for oily hair for the most part, but I still use my last, beloved bottle of Pantene clarifying shampoo.
I'ved tried the following products:
Pantene Ice Shine shampoo---3 (not great, not bad)
conditioner---2 (left hair a bit dry)
Pantene clarifying shampoo---5
Pantene shine conditioner for color treated hair---4.5 (a bit heavy some days)
volume conditioner for color treated hair---3-4 (only because it made my hair seriously pouffy--I have natural wave/body to my hair)
Pantene volumizing shampoo--3 (found it didn't clean my greasies very well)
Pantene Classic Shampoo ----1 (left my hair feeling gummy and dirty)
Pantene deep penitrating mask---4
Pantene color revival conditioner----4
Pantene beautiful lengths conditioner ----4.5 (hair gets weighed down after 2nd day)
Hope that helps...I've used many

I loved Pantene and used it for years but then my hair started shedding like crazy ! My stylist told me to stop using it and atleast try something else to see if that helped the shedding. I finally listened and within a week or so my shedding was stopped and my hair started looking good again.
I think it worked great for a while but either they changed it or my hair just stopped liking it . I never did try it again after that , I was afraid it would bring back the shedding .
EDITED to add : It's been about three years since I used Pantene so I don't remember the name of the exact one I used. I used the dry hair one and the smoothing formula one or something to that effect.

I've tried all sorts of brands from cheap to expensive, bars, CO, CWC and Pantene Beautiful Lengths just does the best for my hair. Leaves it very conditioned, soft, and no flyaways. The old formulations seemed more conditioning while the new ones just seem to be coating.
If you miss the original formulations, try the drugstore/dollar store knock offs. They're imitations of the OLD formulations so they work similar.

It makes my hair super soft and makes the ends feel less crunchy ( which is a big issue in my hair). I also don't find that it weighs my hair down at all, which is nice as I have rather fine hair
All in all, gold star for this product!

I *love* Pantene! I've used it for almost 15 years. When they reformulated last year, I got panicky and bought, seriously, almost every bottle of conditioner at the local Big Lots. I just used up the last of my beloved Smooth Conditioner, and when I went back last week, the only conditioner they had left was Moisture Renewal and Beautiful Lengths. So I bought the last 2 of each. I've been using the BL this past week and am quite pleased. What shall I do after these bottles are gone? *sighs and grief* :-( To be honest, I haven't tried the new line, so I promise I won't judge without trying ;-) I wonder if Wal Mart's Equate knock-off works as well as the old version...?

Most people I know with long hair don't frequent hair boards. They just take care of their hair how they know which = shampoo & conditioner. And it grows just fine and is very healthy. :agree:
I do think that some things like CO etc. can be good for some hair, but it doesn't work for everyone and it isn't necessary to grow long healthy hair. :)

FWIW, I really like their new Medium to Thick line. It's worth trying.

I have to say the volumizing shampoo made my hair freaked out---gave it to a friend with fine hair and he is shocked at how much volume it gave his hair.
The volumizing one is RIDICULOUS! I sent DH to the store for shampoo once: "just pantene, whatever they have is fine." He grabbed that one and it make me hair, like, hysterically, cartoonishly huge. Good times, good times.
The whole family was laughing. So I would recommend it to anyone who actually wants some volume.
I'm still using the Medium-Thick one and still like it. I keep trying other things for awhile... and going back. I think it used to be called "frizzy to smooth" or something like that. This one is the same to me.

I always end up going back to Pantene. I like the new Medium-Thick formulas. I have tried everything, most store brands and quite a few expensive salon brands too! I have done the poo-bars, all natural, no sulfates or cones, etc...but I always end up back with Pantene. My hair just likes it! I alternate between Pantene and Redken...both are great (for me).

Bouh. I used to LOVE their mousses, especially the ice and shine one. I tried the MEDIUM
TO THICK shampoo about a year ago, hated it. The only product I like so far is the curly hair series gel I need to try more products of this line :D

The Medium-Thick Frizzy to Smooth line is starting to grow on me too. :agree:
I think I've been having problems with most products because of henna. I haven't used henna in several months and have been shampooing consistantly. My hair is finally starting to retain moisture again. :cheese:
It's also working better with different products and the Frizzy to Smooth line is one of them. It definitely helps to keep the frizz at bay, but I have to shampoo 2x with the shampoo to get out buildup. The shampoo seems to be more conditioning than cleansing. I alternate with different products but just repurchased more conditioner for the 3rd or 4th time - which is a miracle because I never finish anything. :o
I've also found the Medium-Thick Treatment in the tub to be a good treatment and find it only a notch below Redken't All Soft Heavy Cream. But the Frizzy to Smooth Conditioner is pretty similar just a little less concentrated. So I just add oil, honey, etc. to make it a deep treatment and it works fine. :)

I miss my Pantene clarifying shampoo :(
I'm using Head and Shoulders right now due to sweaty helmet head and it being so hot--my scalp just itches like mad. Thankfully head and shoulders is PH balanced so it can be used on color treated hair. But, I LOVE my pantene conditioners. I'm using the shine one for color treated hair, but want to get more volumizing for the winter--right now, don't need volume. Hahahah---I can't believe how much lift their volumizing shampoo has! :D

I used to be a snob when it came to hair products, I only used salon brands like Alterna and Kerastase because my hair was strawberry blonde with highlights and I'm naturally dark brown. Ever since I went back to dark hair and cut it all off, I started using drugstore stuff and I'm so surprised at how good they are. I only started using Pantene because a friend of mine has the most gorgeous hair I have ever seen in my entire life: hip length, no layers, blunt hemline, virgin straight black hair. I asked her what does she do?! She said, "Nothing, I just use Pantene." So of course I ran out and tried it. I really do like it; it's in rotation in my shower right now.

I have used Pantene for many years and I've also tried different things. I always, always come back to Pantene because nothing else makes my hair feel as smooth and silky and it doesn't get tangled. I've tried BioSilk and that was horrible, made my hair cling to itself. I've tried cheap ones, expensive ones, etc. etc.
Pantene and sweet almond oil when wet is the absolutely best thing I have found. I ordered some coconut oil which will be delivered today so, I will see how that goes.
I just remembered something that a man I was dating said years ago. He said, "Your hair looks like those Pantene commercials."
Right now I'm using the Medium-Thick Frizzy to Smooth in a Walmart branded, exact same bottle shape. I really like this one.

Oh, if my hair liked cones I would so be using pantene. I used to love that stuff...but then I started using leave-ins and such and discovered that 1) My hair neeeeds leave-ins, and 2) this caused *massive* buildup. I could probably get away with using a coney leave-in after a non-cone conditioner, but then I'd have to worry about clarifying and that is just way too much effort.
I don't think that CO washing is *necessary* to grow long healthy hair - I just think that, for me, CO washing produces nicer, smoother, softer results (especially in the first few days after washing - no poof!) so that I can enjoy my hair *while* I grow it out. If S&C gave me nicer hair, you can bet I'd be doing that.

I got major build up and drying effects with Pantene, even from just the shampoo. I also experienced the same stiffness someone else mentioned. I will say it made my hair *look* nice, but that was it. The texture was horrible and plastic.
But what really got me was the obnoxious amount of fragrance. I am not the type of person that is easily affected by smells but the chemical fragrance was so strong that merely having the cap open made my eyes water.

I used Pantene when I was a kid and liked it. As an adult I tried some and got annoyed. I was annoyed because of the commercial saying if you kept using it you would have great hair. One bottle, Two bottles, when is it gonna get good??? It wasn't that Pantene was bad, I just felt scammed into buying and using more of it than I would have. It didn't happen overnight, it didn't happen in a month either. I gave it a chance, and then another and another, more than I ever have for any other product. The thing was, when I tried it and was older, it wasn't the formula that I had liked in the first place. The bad rap Pantene has is undeserved. Its not a terrible product line or anything.

I've used Pantene since I was a kid. I keep trying other things, but I always go back. It just works best for my hair. I used the Dry/Damaged line until they quit making it. Now I use the Nature Fusion, Moisture Balance one. I LOVE IT. It smells good for at least a day after I wash, and the conditioner leaves my hair almost tangle free, which I could never achieve using anything else.
The only thing I don't like about Pantene is their speed in discontinuing products. And it's usually the one I'm using! :(
I'm thinking of stocking up on the Nature Fusion because I like it so much.

I've been using Pantene since I was a kid, and it does just fine for me. I've had better shampoos and conditioners, but it definitely doesn't deserve all the flak it gets. Their deep conditioners and styling products, however, are AMAZING.

I remember Pantene was OK for me. Just OK. Nothing spectacular, but it didn't do anything bad for my hair. In Poland some of the shampoos have Ammonium Lauryl and Laureth Sulfate instead of SLS/SLES... Maybe that's the reason why for some people it doesn't work or it's considered to be bad...

Every now and then I'll get suckered by one of those Pantene ads...but I've sworn off the sauce. No formulation I have tried has done anything beneficial for my hair. I'm not even sure why since sulfates and cones don't really bother me.

I used Pantene for a year or two back in the mid 2000s. It didn't make my hair stiff but it made in uncharacteristically poofy. It wasn't that bad. I actually liked the way my hair would smell nice for ever. My verdict is, wasn't awful, but my hair prefers it's current cone-free diet.

I've been COing for 5 months and its been awesome. But I have half a bottle of Moisture Renew shampoo left from my pre-LHC days so I'm deciding to return to S&C just to use it up- It's a huge Costo sized bottle! I'm thinking Pantene has always been good to me, and I can always clarify the cones out. Do you think the Nature Fusion conditioner would pair well with this?
I noticed all the shampoos in the new line have SLS except for the curly line, the nature fusion line and the classic clean ones. This old moisture renew has ALS.

So rather than starting a new thread, I just did a search and decided to reply to this one. After over 15 years, I decided to give this a go. I went with the color treated condish and the the 'fine hair' line for the poo. My hair did feel really soft, still does the day after. I think I will have to wait a few weeks though as I think I read somewhere that in order to really judge a new product, you have to use it for awhile. One thing I noticed right away with the poo was that while washing, I had 'scalp squeak' and I normally only get that with my CV bars. Not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing. And the day after washing, my hair is not greasy, and normally it is. I'm wondering how often I should ACV rinse now?

I can go a day to a few days longer without washing my hair now that I've started to use Pantene again. It's weird, but that's how it is. I'm using the Aqua Light.

Once upon a time Pantene was only sold in dept stores, was expensive, and very effective.
What's sold under that name now is hardly recognizable compared to the original product. It makes my thin, fine hair feel like plastic.

I was scouring the supermarket shelves for a cheap leave in conditioner the other day, and I came across 'Pantene pro-v Nature Fusion'. Granted I only bought it because it was the cheapest there but it actually conditioned my hair really well. I've got another lot on right now.

Just to defend Thumper---Pantene was originally a very high end ,salon like shampoo. Kelly LeBrock was the spokes person for it. I guess in order to stay alive in the shampoo market, they switched their product to a high advertising campaign and we got changes over and over.

I've been using mostly salon brands for years, but when Pantene revamped their line I tried the med/thick frizzy to smooth conditioner just out of curiosity. I didn't expect much, but I was amazed. Love. It. My hair is now the longest it's even been in my life, and I think part of the reason is the protection my ends get from Pantene. The ingredient list seems really basic, so I'm not sure why its working so well for me, but all I know is that my hair is happy and I am a Pantene convert.
I do use a SLS shampoo once or twice a month to address potential buildup problems, but for me its worth it.
Now I just hope that Pantene will stick with their current lines. At one point they seemed to be repackaging the same (or very similar) conditioner formula under many different names and labels. We don't need 30 varieties, we just need to figure out what works for us and then have faith it will still be available in 5, 10, 15 years.

I'm currently using Aqua Light, and if anything my scalp seems less oily with it. It's very similar to the Clarifying in my opinion, but just a bit more gentle. That said, I'm in the UK and I'm not sure if our formulas differ, but I still think it'll probably be worth a shot for you.

Same here. I have an oily scalp too, and the Aqua Light actually, miraculously, helps me stretch washing with up to two days. I love this shampoo, and normally I'm not that enthusiastic about shampoos. It even gets better if you don't switch up shampoos and stick with it.

Coffeebug--thanks very much! I plan on picking some up tomorrow after work (I'll have to wash then) and see if it works. I like the idea that is moisturizes as I need that due to harsh weather conditions I'm in right now. I did read that is cleans well (it was reviewed in Allure magazine), and that you didn't need to clarify, so I wondered if it might be the same as the clarifying, just re-vamped.
one thing is, I don't agree with the Pantene scientists. They say hair falls into 4 categories: Fine, medium-thick, curly and color treated. Yah, well, mine is all 4, and oily to boot. I find my ends are finer than my roots due to length, and I get my gray colored and I have more wave as I age. So, let's see what those scientists say about that! hahahahhah

For me, Pantene didn't work - even though I love the smell and I love the feeling of latter..and a coney condish..washing it out feels so amazing AGH!
But..since I have coarse curly thick hair, this stuff makes me frizz up like a ball of fur + I can't use cones anymore since I'm a CO-washer. I do recommend this if you have straight hair, it makes hair so silky feeling <3
