View Full Version : Does this bun have a name?

Does anybody know what this bun is called? I sort of stumbled into how to make it a week or two ago, but it is so fast and easy to do that it can hardly be a new one! I have looked around, but haven't seen any descriptions or tutorials for it!

And here is how I do the bun:

http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=5879&pictureid=86077

I gather my hair in a ponytail at the back, maybe twist it a little to make it hold together a bit. I lay a hairstick horizontally on top of the hair, then loop the hair over the tip of the hairstick (upper pictures, right and left). Then I turn the point of the hairstick inwards, and out through the "base" of the rope, not letting the hair in the loop escape (bottom left picture) then loop the tail of hair under the point of the hairstick (bottom right picture) and go on looping the hair - I usually secure the ends with a couple of amish pins.

Like this but with ends wrapped around because you have longer ends?

I had not seen that video, and it certainly look similar! Maybe not identical (we don't do the bun the same way), but it is certainly close kin!:)

It seems to be very much like a bun Amoretti posted a long time ago, only reversed, with the stick stuck the other direction. I can't remember what it was called, only that it's the first bun I learned to do with a hairstick.

I couldn't find that one; it was what I first thought of. Franny's was the closest I found.

I am fairly certain I have seen a few of those on youtube, it has different names for it and a few slightly different ways but in the end it is the same idea :)

This one has the wrap the tail around thing too.

ETA: This was the first hairstick bun I learned, but mine was more like Franny's

Someone should give it a name....

It actually looks *just* like the Manderly Knot, except starting on the other side of the head.

I think this is an orchid wrap (not orchid bun) but I also believe it has several names.

I saw your comment at lunch, but had not time to reply then, but I thought that "dead easy wrap bun" would be a nice, descriptive name - or perhaps "wheel bun", since it keeps on getting reinvented. ;)
Although "orchid wrap" is a prettier name, Milui Elenath!

It's not quite an orchid wrap because in that the ends are wrapped before the stick is inverted and here they are wrapped afterwards. Same principle though.

I "invented" (or so I thought) this bun over 4 years ago when I got my first pair of hairsticks, but couldn't figure out how to hold a bun with them. I was playing around and this was the only thing I could do with a hairstick until I learned the knack of properly inserting them.

It didn't take me long to see that there were already many other wrapped buns that were almost like mine or a variation thereof. Mine works best for shorter long hair though (shoulder to waist, depending on thickness).

Isn't that THE BEST? :) My first and only comment. I love it so much. It always makes me smile.

Actually Alvrodul, your bun is most like the Orchid Wrap. For reference, here are the instruction for that from the archives (http://archive.longhaircommunity.com/showpost.php?p=1515714&postcount=33). It's part of a thread that sadly has no photos of the style there anymore, as so often has happened with the archives.

As enfys says though, your technique is slightly different for tucking in the ends.

So I think you deserve to be able to call this Alvrodul's Wrap. :blossom:

I tried that link, FrannyG, but it did not work :( - was it intended to point to a hairstyle article in the articles section?

I fixed the link. It's a post from a thread in the Archived Forums. Sorry about that.

ETA: By the way, there is an Orchid Bun and an Orchid Wrap, and those are two different things. It's the Orchid Wrap that we're talking about here.

You're right Enfys it's not the orchid wrap, my mistake. I always confuse the two. FrannyG I hadn't seen your video before but I know that I learnt it from somewhere. :hmm:

ETA ahh it is Amorettis wrapped hairstick bun that someone mentioned before that I had seen.

No, you certainly wouldn't have learned a wrapped bun from me. I've been doing the style for 4+ years, but I only recently put up the video, and you likely learned your bun ages ago. And as I say, my video is more for shorter long hair, few people have seen it, and I've never posted it here at LHC.

Now, in Amoretti's tutorial, it looks as though she's taking the ends after inserting the hairstick and wrapping them in the opposite direction from how Alvrodul did it. Yet it is very similar. And gorgeous.

Does KarenLynn have a hairstick wrap tutorial or video? It seems to me, that many moons ago, I saw one, when my hair grew longer than it currently is and now I'm thinking that might also be quite like Alvrodul's. This is becoming quite a mystery. Call in Angela Lansbury! :eye:

FrannyG - good memory! The article is here (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/vbjournal.php?do=article&articleid=31) and the youtube video here. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BBUbojAvl0s) This was the early version with the length wrapped in a figure-8 pattern. I liked it a lot, but it only worked at certain lengths. Wrapping them around is a lot more flexible, but gives it a very different look.

Oh my gosh, i used to do that when I was in high school so that I wouldn't lose my pens and pencils. I never named it, but it's super easy and looks fun.

Damn my slick hair. I have enough length to do it, but it won't stay. :(

Yes, Amoretti wraps hers th other way. I like calling it the "Wheel Bun".

I've never worn this 'do much because it always turns out unevenly balanced for me.

It almost looks like a french twist created with a hair stick- it is very pretty! :)
