View Full Version : A Softer Wear

I wear my hair in some type of updo everyday, which results in a very severe look (think Lilith on Cheers). I'm trying to think of ways to make the front look softer, I'm thinking of maybe some long side bangs, but I don't really like bangs. Is there anyway other than bangs to get away from the severe pulled back look?

I cut some face framing layers a few months ago (roughly following Spidermom's instructions on this (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=35895&highlight=layers) thread) and I'm very happy with the result :)

This article (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/vbjournal.php?do=article&articleid=87) might also be helpful (the pictures seem to be gone, unfortunately).

If you don't want to cut, another option is making the hair in front looser-push the base of a twist so that it "poofs" a little- more volume can make it less severe. Also, you could pincurl it and then put it up for a more playful, fun look.

I agree with bluesnowflake. Scarves, clips, and decorative headbands/wraps can help too.

It might look nice rolled up and pinned on the sides - kind of a 40s look.

This is just what's in the article I linked to :p

Or "hairband" braids
http://static.thehollywoodgossip.com/images/gallery/lauren-conrad-love-me-eyes.jpg I love this hairstyle, it's great for people growing out bangs, but works great on long hair too :)

Gibson tucks give the softest and loosest finish in the front for me.

I do the front 'poof', take the very front section of my hair(where most peoples bangs would be), twist, poof up and pin with criss crossed bobby pins. It's not a HUGE poof, which I don't want, but it gives a little umph. It doesn't stay poofy in my hair though by the end of the day it is flater.

Another way I like to do the front of my hair is much more hair friendly since it involves no bobby pins. I do a deep side part. Then I section off the front on the side opposite the part. Take this and roll. It creates a 1940s look and I find it really pretty. I twist the small section of hair and wrap it around my bun in the back.

What about something like a zig-zag type part? Might not make it "puffier," but would add interest to the style and make it edgey, rather than "Lilith of Cheers."

Think the bangs/layering idea through very, VERY carefully before implementing. There are a lot of people who are ruing the day they cut layers - and those who are very pleased.

Rag Curls make nice soft face-framing curls and are more hair-friendly than bobby pins, so you might try them, too.

Have fun and try lots of new things!
