View Full Version : How do you get long hair up into a wig?

One of my daughters has a wig I really like and would love to try on. It's a dark, rich, shiny brown, with a cotton-candy pink layer underneath.

However, my hair is 33" long and I can't figure out how to make it go underneath without pieces sticking out all over the place.

I remember seeing someone with long hair in a movie removing a short wig, and can't remember what movie it was nor how she managed to get her hair up into it.

Is it even possible to DO this in real life?

Lots of pins and pommade :)

When I did it a couple of years ago, I just remember doing the biggest, flattest, most spread-out bun I could. I didn't have access to any pins but I made it work somehow. I would love to know some tips for this too!

Depends on the type of wig?

Some detail in how it attaches may help.

A wig cap (http://www.headcovers.com/177/revlon-mesh-wig-cap/) is essential. I've done it more or less like a hair wrap; sort of spiralling the hair around the whole head, then clapping the cap on and tucking in any spare bits. There's an article (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/vbjournal.php?do=article&articleid=51) about it here, too.

A braided bee hive-ish updo with a wig cap over, worked for me

Ah, a wig cap! I didn't know there was such a thing. And so cheap! Maybe I can find one at a dollar store locally. Thanks!

Very helpful tutorial, too!

(Wish I could go back and edit my post to have put that in but I'm not allowed to do that yet.)

For dance we cut the toes off of pantyhose and use them as wig caps.

And if Igor can get all that hair under a wig, anyone can!

I have waist length hair that is very voluminous (tight curls). I smooth it all out into a single braid that's a little high (just under my crown), then I wrap the braid around my head using hair pins. I put a tight-fitting spandex cap over this and my hair can fit under anything.

Igor, is that a wig in the picture? I don't know what your hair looks like, being pretty new here.

This. That's what I do come Halloween time...then I just wrap it around nice and flat and it all stays nice and out of sight under the wig.

I'd like to get an outrageous wig to try. It would ge fun to change my hair without the consequences.

Two years ago, I helped my friend with tailbone length when she had to use a pob blue wig. We pincurled all of her hair, and had absolutely no issue with the wig. She looked great.

What is a "pob blue" wig?

In theater I was the costumer/hair and make-up/do-all-girl.

We had this one girl with thick TBL hair that I had to fight under a wig that was very short hair. Think Roxy Hart's hair in Chicago the Movie.

I just did twin french braids and wrapped them around her head and pinned them with amish pins.

Her wig actually kinda looked natural!

Sorry, I should have clarified. I mean a short blue wig, styled like a mix between a pixie cut and a bob. Hope that helps!
