How do you find out your "type" of hair?

I've often seen people mentioning their hair types such as "1a", on this board as well as on other hair boards I've been to. Is there a standard somewhere by which people figure out their hair type, or is it specific to each board? Is there a chart somewhere? If so, does anyone have a link to it?
