I posted this in my blog too...but I thought 'ah what the hey...I'll post it here too..."
GAh. I'm so sick and tired of my long hair. It's bland and hangy downy (even though I wear it up all the time :P) and sheddy and it's everywhere and...and...I NEED A CHANGE!!!! It's currently a smidge past tailbone. The ends are thin and raggedy....I dunno. *sigh* I just feel like I need a .... something. I don't know. Maybe I'll make an appt and hack off two or three inches...even out the ends, thicken 'em up? Gawd...if anyone is reading this...anybody have any ideas? And don't say 'buy a new hairtoy' cuz I have WAY too many already. I feel like going right to a chin length bob. But I've been there and it sucks to keep up the style so I know that probably won't happen. But man...I NEED SOMETHING DIFFERENT!!!
HEEEEEEELLLPPPPP MEEEEEeeeeeeee.......:(
I should also mention I've had long hair for more than 10 years now...I think I'm just getting sick of it now. And yet a part of me wants to keep it. AAAGH!! This is sooo frustrating!!!

what about colouring the last inches in a bright fun colour? If you get tired of it you can trim it off and be back quite soon again:)

In my opinion, the trim that you are suggesting of 2-3 inches is not too drastic and could help you feel better about taking care of it. It always helped me at that length.

What if you chop to waist? That's a pretty big change, and it might satisfy you. From there, you can say either
a) ack! What was I thinking? I loved my long hair and I want it back. but now I've got fresh ends...!
or
b) oooh nice! I like it here.
or
c) Now I know cutting is a good decision, because I'm not traumatized and I like the change. Maybe I'll cut shorter!

Have you waited two weeks? I always used to cut my hair when I get bored of it and I always regretted it.

First, invoke the 2 week rule and think about it. Personally, I'd take a piece of paper and write down a pro/con list. Write down what you like and dislike about your hair. Then think about what would change if you cut it. Write those things down, too. If at the end of the whole thing, you have more reasons to cut than to keep and you feel good about it, do it.
It's hair. It grows.

If I remember correctly, you've got a baby now; that makes it tough. You've got very little time to experiment with your hair and come up with something new and fun. I like the already stated ideas of cutting back a few inches and maybe dyeing (with henna and/or indigo if you scrupulously avoid damage) the ends a fun contrasting color to add some pizzazz to your reliable up-do styles. Above all, be kind to yourself.

I agree with the 2 week rule and if you still feel awful about it I suggest a cut to waist or thereabouts. Then you must wear it down, you must enjoy it, and you must use whatever styling tools you like without thought to the damage. Then, you haven't cut too much shorter (I know, waist is still a big cut to us) but you have gained a lot of freedom and solved the thickness problem. If you still hate it you could cut shorter later, or if you change your mind you're at a good starting point for growing.

Not too much I can add to the suggestions already given here. If I remember correctly, you recently had a baby. Postpartum shedding can be a bear and really change how the hair looks and behaves. Having an infant can cut into your hair time and after such a huge life change, we often feel as if we need other changes, as well.
I agree that taking it up a few inches or to your waist, giving it a try to see how you feel about it, then going from there sounds sensible and not too drastic. You can always cut small amounts, slowly until your hair is right where it will really make you happy.
Whatever you decide, make sure it is what you want, for your own reasons. Our hair is here for us to enjoy. If you aren't enjoying it, if it isn't making you happy and feel beautiful, then it is time to do something with it so that it will. :D

Don't do anything drastic, because once you do a mega cut (and hate it), it's a long road back to long. If you must, just a little bit off at a time until you are happy.

Yep, yep - two weeks, then cut at most up to waist. You can always cut even more later.
