View Full Version : A "safe" bouffant?

I am a fan of the 'bouffant', which I usually seen worn along the crown or back a bit, big and beautiful! My hair simply doesn't do.. big, and sometimes it may do beautiful. I used to try back-combing/teasing a while ago, but beyond the fact that it BARELY put a bump to my thin-ish hair, I was afraid of the damage. I also bought "BumpIt's", but again, thin hair and large plastic piece = not stying in place and showing through my hair. I particularly am a HUGE fan of the ponytail with a bump along the crown to make it look thick and full pulled into a thin, tamed ponytail, but have never been able to achieve this.

Recently, a friend of mine suggested taking the hair, twisting the ends, and then pushing up and pinning. I do this with my bangs already and it works fine, but with a larger amount of hair.. it separates and all, just doesn't work very well.

SO, all you styling enthusiasts out there.. do you know of a way to do a big, safe bouffant (that won't damage hair, or at least not too much) for someone with kinda thin hair that doesn't do 'big' at all? I heard rumors of a hair piece that is shaped like a semi-circle sort of, it's soft and foam like, and apparently works wonders.. but I can't find anything like that anywhere.

Oh and by bouffant I mean both a literal beehive as well as just a bump of volume.. I just want any volume at all actually.. gosh my hair is so flat XD

Some examples of lovely hairstyles I WISH I could do..

I saw something on sale at Bed Bath and Beyond called "Bumpits". They're as seen on TV. Maybe that would help? I've never used them, though.

Here's the link:

Sorry, no other ideas right now.

I purchased them a while back. They're simply too.. plastic-y and evident for my thin hair :x The little teeth stick right through!

I LOVE that ponytail! I really hope there are ways of doing it without damaging the hair.

angelfell, I was reading about ratts yesterday. You can buy them or make them out of your own shed hairs. From what I read, if you make them yourself they blend in much better, can be shaped easier, and look more natural.

Collect all your shed hairs and after a few months roll them together into the appropriate shape. Pin to your head and drape and pin your hair over it. Voila! Safe bouffant.

I've never thought of that :o. I always throw away the hair in my drain.. silly me! Plus, my boyfriend's sister has the same color hair as me.. I can take hers too *evil grin*.

A couple video links in this post (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showpost.php?p=1241309&postcount=30) from the recent beehive thread.

I would say make a hair rat too, and if using shed hair freaks you out you could always buy a cheap-o costume wig close to your natural hair color, cut it and use that in a hair net as a hair rat or pad. Good luck!
