View Full Version : Hairstyles for unconventional wedding?

I'm getting married in February and I really don't know what to make of my hair. I've never been good with making up pretty hairstyles and I don't know any offhand at all.

I want my hair to be mostly loose, but with something pretty going on at the top and/or sides. You know, loose and flowing but with something to make it special. I don't have the dress yet so I don't have any inspiration based on that, but it's going to be a hand-dyed, multi-tone lace up dress. I'm set to search for one at the Renaissance Festival next week, since there are an abundance of really lovely handmade dresses there in the style I want.

So, anyone have any groovy ideas for a pleasant, flowy hairstyle? As soon as I thought "hair," I thought "LHC."

I love this (http://www.dreamweaverbraiding.com/images/Examples/crowns/DtCrownCas.jpg) one. It's so beautiful and reminds me of renaissance type hair.

I had my hair down with braidwaves, but added a flowery wreath to make it look special :-)
It suited the "theme" of nature.

I think a lace headband or fairytale braid would be beautiful.

I wore mine in a half up with autumn flowers wired to a barrette. There's a picture in my hair album. There are some really nice ideas in the most recent wedding hair thread, I think it was started a few months ago. You might find something you like there.

My mom used to do this (http://www.girlydohairstyles.com/2009/11/two-dos-one-start.html)to my hair, except just on the crown, and stopping towards the back of the head, leaving all the rest curled and down. You could put little flowers at each junction.

I'm a fan of Fairy tail braids too. I think they're so pretty and a little different compared to a normal braid. I've seen them done as a sort of crown thing, with most of the hair still down.
Torrin, a member here, has a youtube channel with instructions on how to do them.

Maybe a cascade braid? Or a simple halfup, French braided?

I think you should check out the Elven hairstyles thread on the boards... ;)

I had wired flowers scattered through my length. (picture in album) If I knew about fairytale braids, I would've done that, though.

A cage braid would be nice. You'll need help. They look a lot more intricate than they really are. It's basically just a french or dutch braid that you form down the back with strands coming from the perimeter, leaving the hair in the center down and enclosed by the cage.

my friend got married and if that is your hair in the pic long wavy and red then its very like my friends hair. She left it loose with simple twists from front secured at the back very hippy chickish and wore a flower garland on her head and it looked beautiful

I really like that one too. Actually, I had imagined it as soon as you described the dress, and it's so much nicer that somebody else posted a picture because I was going to have trouble describing it.

I agree on the braided crown or fairytale braid. For my wedding I did a simple braid decorated with a flowered hair-fork/finishing pin borrowed from a friend. Another option- Bantu knots (http://www.carefair.com/hair/make_bantu_knots_1661.html) in a semicircle on top (Bantu knots are basically a bunch of tiny bee-but buns, with the hair sectioned off in patterned parts, sometimes triangle, sometimes hexagonal) decorated with jewels or flowers and the rest down (but taking them out might be a pain).

I had mine half-up in an equilibrium bun (to deal with the fact that half of my hair is disproportionately thin for how long it is), since my veil was secured to the Grahtoe fork in my avatar. I knew I wanted it half-down with braidwaves, and I'm happy I did. You can see the top at http://pics.livejournal.com/kestrelct/pic/0002h1tf/g67, and there's a picture of me putting it up in my album, which gives an idea of what the down part looked like.

I don't know about you, but partway through the reception I got really sick of having my hair/veil down, so I took the veil off and put my hair up (my avatar pic is from when we broke out the cake, after it got in my way too much and I put it up). If you find that it gets in your way down, you might want to make sure that whatever style it's in is one that's easily convertible to up later on.

Something really simple..using only the hair in front of the ears, separate in two sections and make a braid on each side of the head.

Wind one braid around the head and do the same with the other. Pin as desired.

You have a lovely braided hair crown w/o the necessity of french braiding to achieve the effect. The rest of your hair is left to cascade down your back.
