Ok, so what is the deal with steam rollers?? Are they damaging and would they make a good alternative to hot rollers??

I'm not positive but in my own experience with them I would assume they are still damaging, but not really sure if it's better than regular hot rollers or about the same. I used to own a set and would often burn myself because like normal rollers they still get very hot, so to me heat that burns my hands=damage to hair. Have you ever tried sponges or rags as curlers? They give good results without all the heat when you use them with damp hair overnight.

Do you mean like caruso steam rollers? I just got a set of those myself actually :) I've only used them twice but I've never burned myself on them, the rollers are only supposed to sit on the steam between 5 - 10 seconds (depending on your hair type) they are barely warm to the touch, I could grip the entire roller in my hand if I wanted to. I don't intend to use them all the time, just for special occassions and going out etc. and in my opinion (for whatever that's worth) I think they're less damaging than electric rollers. (probably still a little damaging, but not as damaging) There have been a few threads on this in the past here, I'll see if I can find them. Also I think Ultra Bella uses caruso rollers, maybe she'll pop in here with some advice.

Here's a pretty good thread about the Caruso steam rollers http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=36005&highlight=caruso

I LOVE mine. I'm pretty sure that the most damaging thing about them is that the plastic end pieces can snag if you're not careful.

No, the warmth from steam curlers is not damaging to your hair. The steam coming out is obviously super hot, enough to hurt your fingers if you are not careful, but the steam cools immediately and the temp is far below that of hot rollers or a curling iron. They are considered safe for even very small children, hot rollers and curling irons are not.
I personally can't live without my Caruso and I think the curls are so much better than hot rollers. My hair feels soft and conditioned after using them. It is my favorite hair thing ever ! I have been using a Caruso for 20 years now and have owned all three versions. It's simply awesome :)
