I have become obessed with black hair lately. The shine. The deep, dark almost mysterious colour, its just amazing. Ladies and Gentlman I would love to see some pictures of your black hair, where its natural, chemical or henna-indigo!!

My hair is chemically dyed, and though they don't like showing up in pictures, there are three streaks of turquoise hiding somewhere under all that black ;)
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h318/Kylarra_CatClaws/Cosplay%202010/Contemplation.jpg (It's straightened here, so not as wavy as usual)
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h318/Kylarra_CatClaws/IMG00293.jpg (I'm on a boat in this, and it's very windy out, hence all the flyaways. But you get the picture)
I really need to rope someone into taking some pictures for me one of these days.. I don't have any good ones that aren't "I-stuck-my-arm-as-far-out-as-it-goes" angles.

I saw a lady once at an event. She had gorgeous straight shiny waist-length black hair. There was a slight breeze and it was blowing in the breeze. It was so beautiful. Unfortunately, my face color does not look right with black hair. Right now I am very much enjoying the red from henna:)

This was my hair 7 months ago via henna-indigo. It was quite pretty, but the indigo faded horribly. :(

I`ve become a bit obsessed too! Because with having hennaed red hair, I cant put any fun colors in because they don't match with red. Also whenever I had black hair it was super shiny.
Here is my hair when it was black

In the meantime, those of you with chemically dyed hair - could you include what brands you use if you dye at home? And how do you make sure you get through application? Just curious what others use/do ....

I use Koleston perfect hair color 2/0 with a volume 10 developer, it's a professional hair color so you have to either have a license or know someone who can get it for you like I do. So far it's the best black I have ever came across on myself, the box jobs in the stores always faded for me (plus they use a higher volume developer which is more damaging).
The only hard part about using this is I have to apply it myself with a flat brush, I'm glad I only do a full color job every six months because it was very difficult the last time with tailbone length hair.

I wish my hair grew true black . . . alas, even though it is all virgin, and I'm Chinese, it most obstinately remains dark brown (>(oo)<)`
Sometimes it humours me though, and shows up nearly black in photos:

I am (obviously) asian and have completely virgin hair. I would say my hair is solid black, but upon closer inspection I have blond strands here and there. It is definitely blond and not white.

I have a picture in my album that shows my black hair- I will link it to you later if I can. The computer I am on can be finicky about links.
I use Clairol Black from Sally's with a 20 volume developer. I am trying to work my way into a salon connection to get some better, less damaging products, but to be honest it works pretty well for me.
ONLY washing your hair in ICE COLD water is how you prevent fading. When I started dyeing my hair bright colors like pink, red, green, etc. I had horrific fading until some mainstream looking woman whom I had never met before walked up and said that my hair would fade at a much slower rate if I washed it cold.
I tend to get in the shower, wash my hair if it is a wash day, or get it wet and condition it, and then wrap it up in my shower scrunchie (I have five really hideous but non damaging scrunchies that I made, and they can be tossed in the washing machine with my towels so they don't smell mildewy.) and then turn the water on hot while I do everything else, keeping my hair out of the water. I'm sure I get a little bit of hot mist in there, but the color lasts a long time and I really only have to do my roots when I re-dye. I only do a full scale dye job every 6 months or so, because I have super thick hair and it involves about 4 bottles of dye, even at my sadly short length.

Everyone's black hair looks AMAZING! Do any of you black haired folks (dyed especially) use a special shampoo or conditioner? There seems to be tons of products for blondes, browns and reds but none for black hair? I try to not wash so much so as not to fade it but I'm a washaholic I think.

Oooh, this makes me want to dye my hair black sooo bad. I've always found it to be a stunning colour. The only think that stops me for doing so are maintenance, because I know I'd get so bored with having to redye it everytime my dark-blonde roots showed up. :p

I can't get over how astonishing all of your all's hair looks! Its jaw dropping, mind boggling, death defying, and goes against the laws of science! ;)
I haven't seen so much smooth shiny texture all in one place. I have naturally black/dark brown hair. I always felt a bit boring compared to the red heads and I also live in California, where everyone is bleached blond. However, I'm now reminded how gorgeous, mysterious, and glamorous dark hair is on all sorts of people!

I don't think I get a blue black with two-step henna indigo, but the roots might be close (because of repeated overlapping root applications). Length has plenty of red in it - particularly in the sun!
I would say a high indigo content henndigo would get you there, or if you have any white hair - a two step with the second step indigo cut with a little henna like the henndigo. Maybe 80% indigo to 20% henna in the henndigo as a jumping off point to test with.
HTH!

Depends on how many applications of indigo you are dealing with - but yeah, it is permanent. Reaallllllllly permanent. My length is lighter because it has only gotten hit with applications about 5 times in the last 4 years and it has faded, but it has only faded to a very, very dark red brown. Most would still call it black though.
Indigo is more of a commitment then even henna - if you can believe that

I adore black hair - my SO has pure black hair, I can never see any red tones in it, it's so beautiful. Apparently my father had red tones in his black hair. I sadly don't have black hair and neither of my children inherited it either although my eldest's hair is beginning to darken a bit (he has dark brown hair) so finger's crossed!
I dyed mine once, my Mum said I was too pale for it and looked more like my father, lol. It kinda put me off black on myself!

Black hair is beautiful! This is a picture of me from my wedding (6 and a half years ago) with chemically dyed black somewhere around tailbone/hip length:
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/image.php?u=33273&dateline=1290271022&type=profile
I don't have any current pictures but at the moment it doesn't look too impressive anyway as the roots need sorting out. I've recently discovered the joys of henna/indigo and I'm hoping to eventually get that beautiful aubergine black/purple colour that comes with henna saturation and doesn't fade ever!

Now... I have evenly black hair too :) So far only my roots were black, but as it grew the ends were always lighter. Had I known about the indigo I'd have tailbone length hair by now, I chopped off so much because of the brownish ends over the years.
Now I did a two-step henndigo. The color matches my natural color perfectly. In an ideal world, I wouldn't need to do my roots ever. I hope that will be the case :D
I hope the indigo will stick the latest by the third time :) What do you think?

But the most brutal one is this one. Looks like my hair is oiled.. (It was, right after the henndigo I did a heavy oiling overnight, but then washed it off with conditioner)

Loepsie, henndigo black is a big commitment so you do have to be sure that it's the right decision for you, but don't spend too much time worrying what other people think. No matter what you do with your hair (or indeed any aspect of your appearance) there'll always be someone who doesn't like it. The important thing is whether or not you like it yourself.
I think you look beautiful with black hair ;)

This is a couple old, old images from years and years ago (senior pics 2004), sorry they aren't close-ups. It was dyed with a now discontinued hair dye Natural Instincts, I think it was, in the shade Amazon Indigo. I loved it, and I had dyed my hair black before, but those other dyes were awful. If I could get my hands on Amazon indigo again, though, I'd have black hair in a heartbeat. Without further ado:

Here's my hair in Summer 2009 when it was dyed black. I never had intentions of dying it black, I got it dyed "dark brown" in a salon in Spring 2009 to cover up highlights..and left with black hair. Which luckily, I absolutely loved! I kept the black hair all summer.. and I miss it so much. It was just way too much work to keep on touching up the roots. I'd rather grow out my medium brown natural hair. But I still get a STRONG urge to re-dye it black every now and then.

Here's how my hair looks now after my second attempt at a 2-step henndigo. The top 3-4 inches of my hair are henndigoed, the rest is chemical dye

I loved it so much... I'm a henna head now, and actually considering henndigo but I'm affraid to make the commitment since it's so super permanent. Not everybody around me liked the black just as much as I did, too =P Apparantly it makes me look harsh.
I absolutely LOVE your lipstick color! And hair!! :crush:

I could use an advice here: I do have that red glow with my (apparently) black henndigo that I want to eliminate. Can I use some deposit-only synthetic dye over henndigo? It's sick  I do everything (two-step, amla, ....) to avoid the red glow and it's there. :( :(

Hi PolarCathy, I think all but the midnight icy depths blue-blackest natural black hair gets a reddish/brownish tint in the sun like that. I honestly think your hair looks great, very natural and not flat and one-dimensional the way synthetic dye will make it.
The only thing I can think of that you haven't listed is adding salt to your indigo.

Feeling a little better, thank you... I don't really remember how much red I had before the henndigo (my hair is naturally black and I think I always had some red in it, that's why I started the whole thing in the first place, the ends were so reddish)
I added salt too..
I don't dare to go for blue-black, I have been playing with the idea but I am afraid it would make me look much older. Can't I have just pitch black? ;)

Hhmmm have you thought about adding a tablespoon or so of manic panic to a bottle of conditioner and doing a weekly treatment? You could just use the black or a mix of blue and purple to tone down the red.

Thank you,I order my henna and indigo from http://http://www.hennaforhair.com/. I do a 2 step process of all over henna and then indigo. Although now that I've done it a few times I'm just using indigo and will probably only henna the roots every couple of times. The henna helps the indigo to stick. You can just mix the henna into the indigo and do a one step process.

So much stunning hair! I personallyprefer dark brown to black, since I think I can add more dimension to it. I once dyed my hair to a shade called "cinnamon". It looked very dark brown, almost black in some lighting, but shone red in the sun. So gorgeous!

I looove black hair! I would keep mine blueish black all the time if it wasn't for the fact that I would have to dye the roots twice a month because I look like I'm going bald once they start to show. I always use semi-permanent dye when I give in to the temptation since there't not as much contrast when the colour fades. The problem is that I always get a permanent base colour (generally red) tint from semi-permanent dyes, and I really don't like reddish hair on me.

I would love to have black hair. Here is a picture when I did have black-ish hair (it was suppose to be dyed dark brown, but it was black at first and then faded to my color I have now - don't mind my filthy 2 year old daughter :o).

DH said it was too 'dark'. I liked it. If I wasn't growing out my natural hair color (med-light brown) then I would keep it a dark color close to black.

I love this thread! You all have such gorgeous hair. Every now and then I get a major urge to dye my hair black - black is my second favorite hair color after red, and I'm pretty sure I'm never gonna be able to get the color of red that I want. The problem for me is that I've dyed my hair black before, and I thought it looked strange on me when I wasn't wearing dark eyeliner.

I think a good test to tell if a hair color is right for you is how you look without makeup. For instance, black makes my skin look creamy and brings out the pink in cheeks and the yellow in my brown eyes.Whenever I go too warm the pink goes ruddy and the ''creaminess'' of skin turns sallow.

I usually prefer hair that isn't 100% black, and has at least a little bit of brown (and preferably some red). (Or candy colors :D) So when I noticed this thread, I thought, it's cool for you guys that you like black hair, but I'll keep lusting after auburn hair!
Well, today I saw this celeb article (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-2013038/Bride-Kim-Kardashian-d-buts-brighter-tresses.html) and realized what a huge difference black hair can make on some people!! I think the black tresses look fabulous and sexy, and the brown ones look just dull and boring by comparison. Her hair might be bit more styled in the second one, but I think you just can't match the effect the dark sexy black tresses have on her.

Ok so having gone through this thread, I am seriously contemplating going back to a soft black shade....I would want to use box dye, as henndigo goes purplish on me and that does not work....but I know the peroxide in store bought dye is very harsh especially if you don't need to lift your natural hair colour and want deposit only. I think I'd like to use Goldwell semi permanents, but what level developer would I need? Also, can I find instructions somewhere for how much peroxide to dye I need to use, and how long to leave the dye on? Such a novice....thanks :flower: it is such a stunning hair colour....

Well you could do a 2-step henna then indigo (which is what I do).:) I used to use goldwell and got good results. I also like Weleda Color charm (demi-permanent) which is pretty gentle for a dye and fades out nicely. The instructions are on the inside of the box but all of the different developers are in the store. Usually there is a matching developer for the brand. I'd suggest no higher tha 20. If you go with the Color charm demi there is a matching developer.

I have dark brown hair that gets a lot redder in the summer. I color it a few times a year with semi-permanent black dye. It fades after a few weeks to dark brown, but it's a fun, non damaging way to enjoy darker hair for a while. It doesn't completely fade out on greys for about three months. When I get more grey, I'll probably switch to once a month to cover new growth. I didn't know if anyone mentioned semi-permanent, but it's a great option for those of you who are dark but not technically black.

I got myself some semi-permanent dark brown-that-looks-black hair dye. I can't wait to use it. But, not for a while since I just used semi-permanent hair color back in early June and I only use it twice a year... so, not until later this year (I just needed to use my two coupons for a free box of Natural Instincts before they expired on the 31st of this month). The temptation is a little hard to resist.

There is nothing I hate more than my black hair getting sunbleached/dark brown/reddish every summer (it's the reason why I don't have hip+ length hair by now.) I henndigo now but I would like to know what dye you had good experiences with, just in case I don't find a new indigo supplier (only one 500g bag I have left...). TIA!

awwww :3 beautiful hair!! how did you get that blue black??
piggy, your hair is purple-black! Amazing. Did you use a permanent dye?
Piggy! Your hair looks amazing! It's so blue. What method did you decide on to use -- deposit Manic panic? I'm amazed at how much saturation you got.
Thanks everyone! I used Special Effects Blue Velvet, a temporary/deposit only dye. After applying I wrapped my hair in plastic, then in silk, and left it on overnight (^(oo)^)

Wow! I love it! May I ask how your hair felt after the application? I'd love to do that, though I'm still on the fence about the risk of drying out the hair. Did you use anything to moisturize it or was it a pretty gentle formula to begin with? That color is amazing! :)

I think your hair can be called black , I get the impression that people think blue black is the only criteria for black hair but there is a full spectrum of black. I think you are a lovely ravenette :)

Well, the lighting and the filters used have a big impact on how my hair looks. I'll post a picture soon when my hair looks a lot browner :)
Anyway - thanks very much for all nice words!
And here you have the more natural, unfiltered look. Not natural light though ;)

I loooove black hair! My natural color is dark brown and looks black under certain lighting, buy I dye it black anyway (I use a deposit-only toner, just once a year since the roots blend fairly well into the dyed color).
Pics are in my album, I am posting from my cell so it would be a pain to try to attach them here.

My hair colour varies from light to light. In some lights it appears black, other brown and sometimes red in the sun.

Pictures can be very deceiving. My hair used to look black in pictures taken inside quite often when I was younger. Like so:
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c37/Twice_Magpie/bhair2.jpg vs http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c37/Twice_Magpie/hair1.jpg
And heck, you can see all the black patches even in the photo with natural light. It doesn't happen nearly as often, if at all, with digital cameras (I had my hair dyed in the pixie shot in my signature).

I stripped the chemical black to try growing out naturally but I don't like it and am trying to 2 step back to black, only 5 hennas and 3 indigos later it is still only chocolate brown!! I'm off to get some Live XXL cosmic blue or some koleston I think! You lot have convinced me ;)

Pink.Sara-are you adding a pinch of sea salt to you indigo? That seems to help with making the dye last longer and bringing the blue out of the indigo. Also how long do you leave it on for?
Also indigo seems to ''fall out'' of hair more easily than henna so you kind of need to build it up.

Yes, I've used 1 teaspoon of sea salt to every 100grams and I mix with hot water leave for 5 minutes until the jug starts to look blue then apply all over under cling film (saran wrap) for about 2 hours. I have applied 3 times like this in 2 weeks and it's just turning darker brown! I had a good base of Jamila too. Peeved!!!
Indigo blue black is so pretty!

I don't use hot water. The dye in indigo can demise very quickly. I use room temp, filtered water. I get my indigo from hennaforhair.com

Chemical black- a color I've been devoted a long time to. ;p
Sorry for the craptastic quality of the photo, it was taken with my phone with very bright light coming through the window on a rainy day, and my walls are also painted dark blue so it's hard to see. I will take a proper length shot.. someday.

For the record, I've put links to a lot of the hot threads or those of continuing interest in the Index to Important Threads (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=120052) that's stickied at the top of the page. I probably ought to update it with some of the new ones, but it's a good way to find threads like this when they've wandered off the top page. :)

I love black hair! I'm a natural blonde but I had been dying my hair black for 8 years. Two summers ago I decided to grow out my natural color so I chopped off all of my hair and bleached it blonde. I miss my black hair but the root upkeep was becoming annoying, plus having to fill in my eyebrows everyday. Sometimes I think about going back to black because I love the way it looked but I really love not having to worry about dying my roots every two weeks. One thing I loved about black hair was being able to stretch my washes a lot longer. When my hair was black and it got greasy it just made my hair look really shiny, but with my blonde hair any bit of grease just makes my hair look really dirty and nasty. What I wouldn't give to have natural black hair... Here is a picture of my black hair, I love how it looked with my pale skin and blue/gray eyes. My light skin and eyes don't look nearly as nice with my golden blonde hair.

Awesome thread, I LOVE black hair, and all you ladies have such lovely raven tresses :). Other than bright rainbow colors (which I will never do again after all the damage I incurred bleaching and dying my hair every color in the rainbow in high school and college), jet black is my absolute favorite and a go-to color I've done off and on for years. I haven't done it in at least 3 years, and after looking at this thread I have a serious itch to go black again like NOW! I want to avoid permanent chemical dyes this time. I've been thinking henna/indigo, but it's such new territory, would any of you ladies know if I'd be able to henna/indigo after a quick fix of a demi-permanent black like from Raw?

I love this thread, just read all 25 pages. Such gorgeous heads of hair and so inspiring!!
I used to have my hair black for years, and I know I will return to it. Just not now... I forgot what my natural color was for awhile and I'm determined to see it natural at goal first before I dye. I might even wait until I get greys. I don't want the maintenance now, either... but in like 5 years... I know I'll be henndigoing.
