View Full Version : Updos for winter?

With the winter season fast approaching, it's time to ask: What do LHC'ers in cold climates do with their hairtoys when the weather forces you to wear a hat?

Last winter I wasn't on LHC yet. The only thing I could think of doing with my hair under a woolly beret was a French braid with the end tucked under. This style doesn't get into too much disarray when you take the beret off after returning indoors, but I really don't like what braiding does to my waves and so I'd prefer to avoid that style if I can.

Also, since joining LHC I've acquired a number of great hair forks that I'd really hate not to be able to wear during the cold months! Does anyone have good ideas for buns with hair forks that will work under a woolly hat?

Why don't you try a knitted wimpl/cowl, e.g. http://www.theodoraheleneknittedandcrocheted.com/other, they look really wam and it would just rest on top of what ever style you were doing.

It's an idea, and I'm a knitter so I could make my own, but I'm not really that keen on wearing things that go under my chin -- this is also why I'm fighting shy of headscarf-style things. I'd really prefer something more hatlike!

There are many winter hats for long hairs. They allow for updos and even the largest hairtoys to be worn with ease.

Maybe you could change your hat instead of your hairstyles?

I am currently addicted to making many Calorimetry(ies?) myself but hope to try my hand at a few others.

These hats don't muss up long hair styles while keeping the ears and top of the head warm.

Here's two threads with some ideas to start you off:

Oooh, thank you! Calorimetry is a brilliant idea. (Haven't quite decided yet whether I like the Hannah hat... but it's certainly an arresting sight!)

You're welcome! There are a few more styles in that Calorimetry shape around.

I'm not too sure about the Hannah Hat for myself either :) but it's cute and an option.

Up-do's using a Flexi8 works great in my opinion. I've had no problem fitting a Nautilus bun secured with a flexi under a hat/cap. :)
I have not winter-tested it yet however. But I'm sure it'll work!

Uh-oh. I only own one Flexi so far. I think you've just given me an excuse to consider doing something to remedy that situation! :D

What about braids wrapped around your head? Last winter I wasn't at LHC too so I just... Yes, I used to wear my hair down because it was technically easy. Who cared about wind and coldness? No one. My poor hair... This year I am planning to wear my hair in a braided crowns or in a crown braid. Rope, lace, English, French, from one or two braids... We can find few options, so it won't be boring;)

Not long enough yet to go around! Waaah! Plus, I don't want to braid...

I don't wear hats a lot, but last year I made a pattern for a slouchy beret type hat and knitted them in all different colors & I was really pleased with how they turned out. As long as I don't wear hairsticks with them, I don't have a problem with updos, but mostly I wear a braid if I know I'm going to wear a hat.

I've always wondered what the Calorimetry thread was about...I may have to knit me one of those, especially since I have a new purple winter coat that's in need of some equally awesome accent colors!
I am actually concerned about neck warmness this winter. I've always kept my hair down in winter, and it's a very good insulator! But I do agree that wearing it up can help protect it during the cold and dry winter. While scarves are nice, they tend to drift downwards, leaving a bit of neck exposed. I suppose a cowl or hood of some kind would take care of that, even though I am not used to that type of head covering. I pretty much don't care how I look when it gets below 32 degrees F. ;)

I love nape buns with a bowler hat. I don't spend much time in a winter climate anymore but it's always worked for me. Or I can tie a scarf around my ears and such versus the hat and have the bun at any height.

Darn enablers. I'm crocheting a calorimetry right now...I can't knit (repetitive stress, so knitting = OUCH!).

This is going to be my first winter actually going out and about in Utah weather, so this was a great thread.

If it's so cold I feel like wearing a woolen hat I'll just keep my hair in a over-the-shoulder braid and pop the hat on top. I really hate wearing a hat with my hair in a bun or whatever, I feel it makes me look ridiculous. I need some hair in front. It's another reason I want to cut some faceframing layers that can hang down. ;)

Wow, Gabriel, thanks for those links, those are cute hats!

Does anyone on here make those to sell on the swap board? I'm so not a knitter..... :D

Nah, it's against the forum's rules to make and sell stuff through the swap board (or really, anywhere on the site). ;)
