View Full Version : Pinless crown braid

spidermom

It's not perfect, but it's comfortable and looks pretty cool, so I had to share it. I took a long narrow silk scarf, leaving the beginning end sticking out, and twisted it into a rope braid going all the way around my head. Then I wrapped the end of the scarf once more around my head and tied the end of the scarf to the beginning. Voila! A comfortable, pinless crown braid:

I like this! Sadly my hair is way to short and has to many layers... so for now i'll have to admire it on you!

It's beautiful! Is it very stable, though?

Yes - amazingly so! And it's not pulling anywhere, doesn't feel heavy. I was about to give up on ever achieving anything stable and comfortable with this length.

Oooh, how pretty! I'm glad you found something that worked. I'm tempted to try it myself, I'm just hesitating as I imagine how sore my arms will be halfway through, LOL.

It's beautiful! :) What a clever way to use a scarf! I'm looking forward to being able to wear styles like this.

Did you french rope braid it around your crown first? Or is is one long rope braid that you coiled after making it? It is amazing.

I french rope braided it all the way around, then I had enough length to wrap around my head again, plus the scarf went around one more time. It's very stable.

Awesome!! That is so pretty! And it really stayed put without any pins? *jealous* I can imagine me having to use a bunch of pins to make that stay put! When you're done with birthmarkie's hair can you pretty please do mine? :D

Holy cow! That's gorgeous! I know you've had a heck of a time with updo's that are comfortable an stable.

SheaLynne
September 23rd, 2010, 01:17 PM
Oohhh, that is just beautiful. I want details.... :D

Is the outer braid the french part and the tail coiled inside, or vice versa?

What shape and how long was your scarf? (long and narrow rectangle?)

Where did you loop the scarf the final time? Inside or outside the braid coils?
(ETA: After looking at the pic again, I think I see the answer to this one...outside--but need details on tying ends of scarf...)

I think a tutorial would be in order! :)

Love it!!!

Your wish is my command. As soon as I have a photographer available, I'll do a tutorial for our articles section, providing I can accomplish this again. You have all probably had this happen - you pull off something spectacular one day and never duplicate it.

You have some excellent updo skills there, Spidermom! What a beautiful style! And how great that it stays put and doesn't tug! Just icing on the cake.

French rope crown braiding sounds complicated to me. Great job! :bowtome:

Spidermom, this style is absolutely gorgeous. I love how the orange scarf compliments your hair.

If only you could transfer you skill at french rope braiding . . .

I'm looking forward to the tutorial!

It's really, really gorgeous, spidermom. I'm kinda jealous. :D Looking forward to a tutorial.

Also know what you mean about one day something working and it never does again. Kind of like when I'm leaving the house and just want my bun to look halfway decent, except it never does unless I'm schlepping around the house and not going anywhere...

My skull is also substantially sized, so wrapping takes up plenty, and as you know with thick hair how very much it shortens as you braid (plus I fail at French braids, still) Maybe this will be my next big challenge.
Today I finally succeeded in hair taping milk maid braids, which never seemed to work before. The secret for my hair was to separate out the back and braid it and let that dangle and wrap the now-thinner side braids around the crown for taping.

I haven't tried taping.

Oh, I think so. My hair is about the same length as yours. It's only wrapped around once, right? And the first rope is braided as you go by picking up and weaving in scalp hair?

It is very lovely!
