Virgin hair growth vs. dyed

My avatar is actually an example of natural two-toned hair.. the length has faded out semi-permanent black dye, so it ought to be darker.. but it's brighter! That was over a year ago though, now I'm a committed chemical raven-head. Here's a larger picture of the one in my avatar:

ETA: PS, I love that your blonde is still blonde! My mom's hairstylist told me that once I permanent dyed my hair black it would never grow back the same. I just rolled my eyes and called her ridiculous

ok, as someone who has sported two-tone hair for many years, here goes (every time I try to write a long-ish post, LHC craps out and I lose it)

The last time I dyed all my hair, as far as I can tell, was about May 2009. This picture was taken in July 2009 and the color had already faded to this washed-out ginger that for some reason my hair ALWAYS reverts to no matter what color it's been dyed:

By October of that year I had some decent regrowth:

The virgin regrowth is also the demarcation where my hair was growing back following post-partum shed. I lost over half of my hair so there was a pretty severe difference in the volume of the dyed part and the virgin part.

By April of this year I was fed up with two-tone hair and determined to get rid of the dyed part, once I had some fun with it. So I bleached the previously-dyed part of my hair and dyed it blue with purple and turquoise streaks. Once the colors faded enough to look blah I chopped them off (also fueled by the volume difference, which made it look really crap long). I still have a swath of blonde at the very tips of my hair on one side, but the rest is virgin:

I really like it! Sometimes photos of my hair make it look much darker at the top - I guess I have a sort of demarcation line during the winter, because the winter growth doesn't get bleached out by the sun - but your picture is beautiful!

Yeah, blue seems to fade the fastest and look the crappiest afterwards of just about any 'vibrant' color, so that's why I did it on my throwaway hair. I had always wanted to do all my hair blue but knew from experience that it would only look great for about a week :D

I actually fell in love with the really deep purple. It has the punch of blue without the green aftertaste. I would really advise against the teal with blue since it ended up looking like the blue just didn't fully take in places. The most spectacular spots were where I ended up with purple applied on top of blue for a blue-violet effect. I think because I only co-wash my color stayed really nice for almost six weeks, but the second it was cut it's like the color fell out the bottom of the shaft in about four days.

I have a bottle of deep purple that I really want to do my whole head with (dye w/out bleaching first), and the only thing stopping me is that 99.9% of my hair is FINALLY virgin, after so many years of trying to break the dye cycle. Oh, and I hated having to sleep on a towel so that my hair didn't stain my pillowcase :D

My hair is kind of two-toned as well. The roots are a sort of greyish brown (virgin, yay for genetics...) while the rest is chemically dyed regular brown. I don't have a picture, though; I don't have a good enough camera since my cellphone is having seizures whenever I try to upload images from it, and my web camera is absolutely stupid and makes it impossible to get an image where you can actually see my hair as anything other than a black blob. Stupid thing.

What great roots, Error! I love how your two-toned hair really sets off your eyes and eyeliner -- it's like the virgin roots and your eyes compliment each other, and the black in the eyeliner and the rest of your hair give them awesome contrast! :) :flower:

Same thing that happens to Piggy happens to me -- my hair looks fairly dark and mostly black at the roots, but my ends lighten to medium to lightish brown. I just looked through my photos, though, and I don't have any good examples :/

Actually it's rather common and natural. These ends are few years old now, and been exposed to the elements - especially the sun. Sun rays have the ability to lighten hair (the so called sun bleaching), so after a long while one can notice a difference between their roots and ends, it's very widespread phenomena.

I think it looks pretty, but then again I'm a total sucker for the ombre look. :wink:

Heidi_234 - re sun bleaching. I read a book a while back about the physics of lightwaves and color and it talked about the reason colors fade (iirc) being that when a ray of sunlight hits something the wavelength of the light physically changes the structure of the pigment. The material of the pigment (melanin in humans) is vibrating at a certain wavelength and the clash with the vibration of the ray of sunlight actually minutely changes the vibration of the pigment. The more sunlight wavelengths hit the object, the less it will hold the high/low wavelength characteristics it had before, so it loses its color.

I studied art for years, and DH studied even longer than I did, but never once were we taught about that side of it, and that THAT was why anything with a color needs to be protected from UV rays or it will fade, and also why some pigments are more stable when exposed to sunlight than others, AND why sunlight causes more fading than incandescent/fluorescent lights - because they have a limited spectrum and sunlight is full spectrum plus UV.

But even on my siggy, my hair has many colours, I prefer that, it feels more alive . . having it all one colour would be boring, I usually get bored by it .

I like the way two-toned hair looks if the roots have reached SL or further. On the street yesterday I saw a woman with TB wurly hair that was lighter starting from BSLish length. It was perfect and I told her so. :o It made my day and I hope the compliment made hers, too.

I stopped doing full henna applications on my naturally red hair about huh 2? or 3? years ago. Time flies :laugh:
In the first time I did some henna-glosses but atm I'm growing out my whites. Not sure yet if I really like the salt & paprika look on me. Hmm anyways...

Here's an older picture with already faded henna, about 1 1/2 years into growing it out I'd say. When I hennaed frequently it didn't have this strange hue, it was more red and just a brighter version of my own color. But that's what the ends have faded to.

I once had to grow out blue/black dye. I'm a dark ash blond. At first I thought it wasn't so bad, that is, until I saw myself in bright natural light. My hair had grown out half an inch and it looked as if I had no hair around my parting, because the black was *so* dark. Your two-toned hair is actually not bad at all. I love your natural color and look at all that shine! :)

I think there is no difference about growing speed, but split ends are coming earlier for dyed hair
