Hi all, I want to show off my new hair today :p

Theyre called synthetic dreadlocks, so of course, theyre not real. I made them by back combing, twisting, and then sealing sections of extension hair from packs of kanekalon braids. Theres a lot of great tutorials out on the internet--I used Mental Shiver's synthetic dread tutorials off of youtube, and a double ended dread tutorial thats floating around on the web. the light purple dreads are put in by taking a section of my own hair, splitting it in two, then 3-strand braiding it for a bit, and then combining my own hair and two strand braiding it.

Any who, I just wanted to show off/give members new hairstyle ideas/see if anyone else has ever had crazy hair like this, lol.

Thank you! I admire the people who have the dedication for real dreads. When I had real ones I only kept them in for a week. I like that I can play around with colors and fool people with my fake ones c:

I love synthetic dreads! Yours looks awesome and love the color accents. I've made dreadlocks before, I can't remember where the tutorial was but I basically back-combed, smoothed a bit, twisted and boiled them. I made an extension clip because I was too lazy to braid them in but it was very cool. There are a few gorgeous makers out there that I use to covet when I was more experimental in high school. I remember this maker that made the best dreads over at Synthhair on LJ (so long ago...) but it reminded me of blue cotton candy.

Say what? I've never even heard of synthetic dreads. Can you just take them out when you are sick of them? How convenient!

It looks very cute.

I couldn't have dreads myself, I'd want to drag a hairbrush through them after about 2 minutes!

I am going to be honest, dreads SCARE ME as the ones I have seen are usually smelly and not properly cared for. However, I work with a girl who has the most beautiful dreads and she is meticulous about her care of them, so they are lovely and fume-free!! Yours are super cute, though I am unsure of how they are temporary!! Do you have the YouTube link or tutorial video? Maybe I will be a dreadlock girl someday....

Very interesting, and lovely that they are not permanent. It's nice to be able to make the expression and also undo it when it's time for a change. This is why I only keep one little tiny streak of blonde in my hair, to play with different colors. I know if it comes out odd I can hide it :)

Tinker bug you look darling!!

Kudos on going the synth route, my experience with dreads left me bald yet loving it

I love your purple accent! How long do you plan on keeping them in?

Those look so amazing on you - as you are quite a gorgeous young woman who could, no doubt, pull off just about anything you wanted to put on your head or wear! ;o)

It's great that you can have the fun of something wild and different without taking the risks with your real hair, keeping the possible damage to a bare minimum.

Fun! Thanks for sharing! Enjoy yourself!

very pretty, where did you get them from?

so cool! I have several dread falls now (see album for early attempts) but have never had the time to go full-head (mom to a toddler). I like being able to change the look and add and subtract hair.

Yours look good because of them mostly being a natural color. I made some in light brown and dark blonde, but also always try to include some of my own hair, sometimes waxed/oiled into a dreadlike shape, in the part that 'falls' down. I have also found that the bigger the fall is (the more hair you use) the cooler it looks, but perhaps this is just because my own natural hair is so messy anyway, and looks better 'pumped up.'

For anyone who wants to try it is easy and fun, and a fun party look. For Halloween I am going to be an aquatic vampire and plan on doing something with my own hair, my blue/green dreads, and lots and lots of hairspray. :D

I don't get it :D : from your avatar you seem to have hip / waist hair, right ? So where IS your own hair now, since you didn't dread it, or did you ?

It looks great! I like how the light purple ones are braided into your own hair :)

I didn't know I'd cause so much confusion to everyone, sorry for that!! My natural hair is braided around the fake dreads, therefore, the length is eaten up quite a bit so I can go from waist+ (thats an old profile pic, I chopped to waist about a month ago) to around APL. I can take them out whenever I feel like it, it just takes some time :) In fact, I took them out Thursday night because the braids were sagging down and it didn't look so pretty :P I rebraided them in last night (Sunday). It takes about 1-2 hours for me to take them out and 3-4 hours to braid them back in. There is very little damage to my hair (just some minor detangling). Essentially, theses are micro braids with some stuff in them :P

Here's the link I used to learn how to make single ended synthetic dreads:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7XeapWqrai8&feature=related
(theres 2 parts so be sure to watch the second!!)

This is the tutorial I used to make my second set of dreads, double ended synthetic dreads:
http://community.livejournal.com/fakehair/3668000.html
(I didn't use a steamer, I just used the hair straightner method used in the single-ended tutorial)

I hope that cleared some things up!! Thanks y'all for all the compliments :flowers:

Me likey!!! I've always wanted dreads but my haircolor is pushing the envelope enough at work. They look super-cute!

They look great - espesh for a first attempt, I've seen many people start and end up with very bumpy - not very well back combed examples.

I used to use the straighter method for my own dreads but I like using a steamer for custom orders - it ends up being better quality sealed.
