There are really 3 main types of castor oil:

1) Cold pressed castor oil "regular castor oil" is one of the few oils that can be used as an emulsifying agent. It also acts as a protective barrier on your skin that will protect against harsh environmental conditions. Castor oil is rich in fatty acids and is soothing and lubricating. It is a humectant that attracts moisture to the skin. It is routinely used in hair oils, balms, and other thick emulsions for the skin and hair. It attracts and holds moisture in the skin.

2) Sulphonated (or Sulfated) castor oil is commonly known as "Turkey Red". Sulfated castor oil is created by adding sulfuric acid to castor oil. The resulting oil is water-soluble.This oil is commonly used as a base for bath oils since it mixes readily with water and allows other oils to emulsify in water. It is the only oil that will completely disperse in water and not leave an oily ring around the tub. The oil is expressed from the seed of the castor bean. The oil has a distinct, heavy scent and is of amber color.Turkey Red is used to emulsify essential oils so that they will dissolve in other water-based products.

3) Black Castor oil is processed by first roasting the seeds after which the beans are boiled to extract the dark brown oil. The higher ash content is thought to increase the effectiveness of the oil.

It is not just as simple as that. The oil's iodine value is different depending on how it is processed.

That means it can be a non-drying, semi-drying or drying oil, leaving no tough coating on hair, a partial coating on hair or a more difficult film on the hair.

Here is a pdf on castor oil I posted earlier. http://www.aseanfood.info/articles/11016258.pdf

which oil is best for the oil cleansing method? I am going to assume the clear oil, but has anyone tried the black and had good results?

You need to find out how it is processed.
