Hello!
I'm new here, I'm Lillie from the UK and I'm pleased to meet you all.
I've joined because I have had long hair for some time, but over the last couple of years it's gone wrong. I don't know what's up with it. I was hoping I could get some help.
I have never really bothered with it much. About 15 years ago I had my head shaved bald. I had it like that for quite a while and I liked it. I'd tried to grow it before that but always given up.
So, then I met the bloke who was to be my husband and he really didn't like having a bald girlfriend, so I started growing it again. Then every time we had a row I'd hack it back off.
Until the last time I hacked it off, which must be about 12 or 13 years ago. It's been growing since then and is now down my back. I have never paid muc attention to it except for saying 'Oh! look how long it's got!' Mostly I just got stuck up in a pony tail and ignored.
But then, a couple of years ago I started noticing that there were strands in it that had got coarse, wiggly and very brittle. These strands seem to be increasing and are especially prevalent on the top of my head while the back is still quite silky.
I have tried getting hot oil treatments from the chemist, and that sort of thing. I even bought some fancy shampoo. Pan 10 proV for damaged hair (before that it would just be some generic cheap stuff from the chemist). But nothing has made a difference.
I do not over wash it. In fact if it gets washed once every 6 weeks it thinks it's lucky (I wash, wash, condition). I don't use any kind of thing on it like blow driers or curlers. I have not dyed it for about 10 years. Mostly I ignore it. It does it's thing and I do mine, but this coarse thing is starting to really annoy me.
I am going grey, especially at the front, but the grey hairs do not seem to be affected in particular. It is also very straggly at the bottom with a lot of split ends and has gone into a long sort of V shape and I doubt it will ever grow much longer, if at all. It doesn't seem to have grown much for a long time, though I have not measured it before to know for sure.
I'm of a certain age (mid 40's) and have wondered if this is some kind of peri menopause thing that is just part of the whole list of changes I have been told to expect and that nothing can be done.
I have tried reading though some of the articles and stuff on this forum, but I have to admit it means nothing to me. I don't know what you are all taking about most of the time I am so ignorant about this hair business.
So I am hoping that I can get some help and advice about whether I can fix this hair problem and how, or whether I should resign myself to cutting it shorter before it all snaps off.
