Gentle hair protection under a hard hat question

:confused:I'm an electrian and on most jobs I must wear a hard hat. I have BSL length hair & usually just braid it, but it collects all kinds of dust and it can be in the way a little. Bobby pins don't stay in long enough and the hat liner pulls and snags on my hair. I've tried bandanas but they keep slipping off. I was thinking about buying material and making my own giant hair scarf/bandana. Does anyone else have any better ideas?

I posted about a similar problem with my bike helmet a week or so ago, and ordered a buff based on some responses. Works like a charm! My issue is with my helmet stressing the hair along my hairline. I am not sure how well it would work to protect your lenght, but you can check out youtube for different ways to use.

I also considered trying an oversized silk scarf, but I am lazy and the buff is easier for me. :)

I use a snood - keeps the hair neat and tangle free and looks feminine! I found a bunch on Etsy.com.

As I recall, the hardhat liner fits on the head itself and the hat extends above that. If you were to use a bandana or scarf for a Rosie the Riveter sort of covering would you be able to fit the knot in the spaces between the liner and the hat?

Or, you might make a snood from fabric rather than from netting.

A snood pattern (http://proudmommy.tripod.com/snood.html) I haven't used, but it looks like it will make up well. I think I would put elastic in the bottom part of the band, from ear to ear, so that you can make it rather snug. Or a drawstring through the entire band that can be tied at the nape of your neck and left under the bag or tucked into it. This (http://proudmommy0f4.livejournal.com/84482.html) might be a better idea than the drawstring.

I suspect you would want less fullness in the bag, more like this (http://chawedrosin.wordpress.com/2009/04/17/perky-snood/). Play around with the pattern and see what works for you.

Cotton generally stays put the best. You could cut up a couple of bandanas to use or find some bandana patterned fabric if you want to stay with that look.

Hard hat liners arn't good at all. First off they don't fit over my bun, they are hot in the summer, and they are also scritchy. The rosie the riveter thing wasn't working out that well either. The bandanas slide off, they can't cover all my hair because they aren't big enough. it was what I was doing, that's why I was thinking about sewing something larger. The snood idea sounds the most promising other than the buff thing. Even if the bobby pins fall out, my hair will still be caught up inside.

Oh man...if anybody comes up with a solution for the dreaded hard-hat I will be eternally grateful. The best thing I could ever come up with is a braid under a bandana, and also finding a hard-hat that has an adjustable liner (it has a little turny-knob in the back so you can get it to fit snugly.) It still has to be taken off and readjusted periodically, but nothing else I've tried works.
Did I mention I HATE HARD-HATS?? :mad: Thank God we don't have to wear them on most jobs.

The sweat-wicking dry-weave dorag/bandanas with the soft elastic edge are awesome under hardhats. I can't remember a brand name but they are in the ethnic haircare section.

Have you tried clipping your bandana to your hairline with a few well-placed hair clips?

hmm well I've never worn a hard hat, but I wear these liners under my motorcycle helmets - they're nice & stretchy, they breathe well so your head doesn't get too hot, and they don't bunch up or slide out of place.

Usually I'll put my hair in a low braid at the nape of my neck, then the liner goes on top. Regarding your issue with the braid collecting dust & getting in the way - I actually ride with my braid tucked inside my shirt for similar reasons . . . finding dead bug splatter in my hair is not on my list of things to experience in life! (^(oo)^)

I'm a farmer and the Buff does it for me:)

I braid my hair, twist it up into a low bun at the nape which I secure with a scrunchie, then the Buff goes on top, and I secure the ends at my nape. Then my cap on top of that.

I could wear that with a hardhat if I had to.
