I am getting in a pickle about which supplements I should be using for what.
I am looking to help with a long shed and also promote lots of new growth at the same time. So what should I be taking?
I have used MSM so far.

Hi! I have also experienced some major hairloss, so I know how you're feeling.
MSM works really good for me. Especially if I take supplements of vitamin C in addition to it, because it helps my body take advantage of the MSM. Having a lot of baby hairs now :)
I have never tried biotin, but since I'm acne prone, I don't dare to either. I mean... cystical acne? No thanks! I know not everyone experience it, but it isn't something I would risk

I take both. I started the biotin around the beginning of this year for my hair, but have been taking the MSM along with glucosamine and chondroitin for years for my joints - didn't know it had any effect on hair til I joined LHC :)

I take both and have for years. Biotin helps me grow better quality hair. My strands are thicker (diameter) and stronger. MSM greatly reduces my shedding. Not everyone experiences increased acne.

I also take both. Basically what Carolyn said, regarding the effect of the two supplements. Also, the acne can be put at bay by drinking tons of water. At least it did for me.

i take both and glucosemine is good to take with the MSN as well...I also take gelatin, daily (prenatel, NOT PG) vitiman, and vitiman C or is it D, I think its D, I'll have to look...all for hair growth. I think it helps, I didnt take anything for a week last month and didnt get my 1/2-1" usual growth last month

I take both as well and I never noticed acne with biotin. Although I normally allready usually had one or two spots on my face.

The advice i saw is to start at a lower dose and work your way up. I'm jumping in with 5mg pills once it arrives lol. I do already take brewers yeast though and there is a tiny bit in my skin hair and nails supplement.
MSM i've been taking for about a month and a week now, along with high dose timed release vitamin c with bioflavanoids, gotu kola, evening primrose oil and a few others. My shedding seems to have slowed down but as i often go through extreeme cycles i'll have to see how it works out over time.
Hair wise the main appeal for me was that MSM is believed to extend the anagen phase of the growth cycle by up to 50%.

I was wondering how much mg. are you taking of the MSM & what brand?
The one that I am taking has 1,000 mg. in it (from Vitacost, NSI brand) but I haven't noticed any change in growth or hair shed.
The next time I buy some I think that I will change brands or maybe I should take 2 a day instead of one.
What is a good brand that you have had good results from?

I have been taking biotin for several months and don't notice any benefits. No drawbacks either.

Sorry about hi-jacking the thread but I've noticed that a lot of people take pretty high doses of biotin. Does it really make a difference if you take a higher dose than what's "normally" recommended? I take a multivitamin which gives 200 mcg biotin per day, I'm wondering if that's enough to make a difference for my hair or if I should take some extra biotin or hair/skin/nails-supplements on the side. At the same time I don't wanna spend lots of money on vitamins and supplements if I'm just gonna end up peeing out the excess

I take the Holland and Barretts one, 750mg but i sometimes take 2 a day. I should really take 2 regularly. I also always take high dose of vitamic c at the same time.

I have been taking biotin that is 5000 mg and does not seem to make a difference one way or the other. Has been several months, would think it would be long enough to notice an effect.

"Country life maxi hair" is like a multi-vitamin but with a high amount of biotin and 600mg MSM if you would like to try that. I am waiting for mine to arrive. It says to take two pills daily but i decided to instead buy their "pure" biotin pills and take one of those with the maxi hair. I don't know what you normally pay, but i think that the maxi hair seems like good value :)

Within a day or two of taking MSM, my face erupts. I've tried taking it by itself and in a multi, but I get the same reaction every time -at least 20 spots!

I do know in the US the only supplement FDA approved as a biotin supplement to be bioavailable, meaning easily absorbed from the gut, is Appearex. So, if biotin is what you are taking and after 8 weeks you are not noticing a difference, then maybe switch over to the brand name and try it. sometimes it may work better as some vitamins seem to get passed through without the body absorbing most of the nutrients. just a thought....
