View Full Version : How to: Woven bun

I posted about this style in another thread and someone asked my if there were links to the instructions, but I couldn't find them anymore. So I made my own (or at least, I tried to) :)

What the style looks like from the back:
http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk38/Isilya86/th_PICT0010.jpg (http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk38/Isilya86/PICT0010.jpg)

And from the side:
http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk38/Isilya86/th_PICT0035-1.jpg (http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk38/Isilya86/PICT0035-1.jpg)

What you need:
Metal-free hair band
2 hairsticks
Hair pins (whatever you usually use to pin your hair will do)

Instructions:
Ponytail your hair and fasten with a metal-free hair band.
Place the 2 sticks in an X shape (the sticks need to form 90° angles) behind the hair band in your hair.
We will name the 4 ends of the shape “X” formed by the sticks like this: upper-left is A, lower-left is B, lower-right is C and upper-right is D. The X in the ‘diagram’ represents the 2 sticks.

AOOOD
OOXOO
BOOOC

Now, divide your hair in 4 equal-sized sections by first parting the ponytail in a vertical way, like this: l; then parting both halfs horizontally, like this: __. Once you have finished the style, you will see a plus-shape (+) in your bun.
Number the strands: upper-left is 1, lower-left is 2, lower-right is 3, upper-left is 4.

1OlO4
-------
2OlO3

Now we will start the weaving. Take strand 1 (upper-left) and bring it UNDER point A (again, upper-left), OVER point B, UNDER point C, OVER point D, … Repeat this alternating under-over-movement until you run out of hair. Tuck the ends in and pin your first strand in place.
Pick up strand 2. Bring it under B, over C, under D, over A, … Tuck and pin your second strand in place.
Now pick up strand 3. Bring it under C, over D, under A, over B, … Tuck and pin the third strand in place.
Pick up your last strand. Bring it under D, over A, under B, over C, … Tuck and pin the final strand in place.
Done! Admire your work. Take a pic :)So, the general pattern is: bring the strand under the nearest stick-end (1A, 2B, 3C, 4D), over the next, under-over-under-over-under-over-…
If the instructions don't seem to make any sense at first, I suggest you just try it out. When I first saw the original ones, I was a bit confused, but as soon as I tried it, the pieces fell into place :)

Thank you girls!

Avrilon, you have no idea how much that means to me. I tried to explain this as detailed as I could and even had someone (--> happylynngilmer) proof read it for me. She added a few more elements too :)

JUST proofread! The diagrams were all Lady Isilya! (very good diagrams).

Worse case scenario, it would work as a half-up, too!

Very pretty and according to your stats my hair should be long enough to do it!! I see all these beautiful creations and try them only to find way to many times that my hair is just too short. Now to find 2 sticks that are the same length.

I understood those instructions perfectly. It's like a craft I used to do with sticks and yarn as a kid.

Here's my first, rushed attept on soaking wet hair:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v311/SycoTrekkie/2008/May212008Upload011.jpg

It doesn't really look as nice as yours... But, for my first shot, it isn't bad. I'm going to be trying this again tomorrow on dry hair. Thanks for those very nice instructions!

I definitely need to work on this... my bun doesn't look anything like yours, Isilya.

This pic is from my second try. First time I made the ponytail too loose and somehow my hair sticks turned 90 degrees counter-clockwise. Second time made tighter pony, and pinned each strand to it's place after weaving.

I still can't get the plus shape to show. Well, practise makes perfect.

Sorry for lousy pictures. Spouse was "too busy" (aka lazy) to take pics so I took them myself by using the bathroom mirror.

OK, I just tried this bun (I would say with great success, but then you can see the picture, LOL! Though, my other buns are not much neater...). I realised I was weaving in a clockwise direction, as opposed to your instructions, Isilya. But that wasn't a problem, really.

I did have a problem with the ponytail holder and slippery hair, but also - what do you do with the remaining 3 strands whilst weaving the first one? I tried to hold them in my other hand, but they ended up merging and getting slightly woven around the sticks too. I probably just need more practice, but if anyone's got a tip or trick to share, I'd appreciate it!

Isilya
May 22nd, 2008, 11:41 AM
It doesn't look that bad, Jel, really. With a bit more practise it will look perfect :)

You could try to clip (or band) the other sections while you're weaving, I guess. That way they're easier to lift out of the way when you're weaving and they can't merge either.

Thank you, Kwaniesiam. Yes, in a way it is like a Chinese bun (except you don't go over and under when doing that one).

I've been trying to get this style down. It's really neat looking!

I like what it looks like so far in my hair, but I can't seem to get my ends fastened and stay fastened. I get to the third or fourth strand and my first gets itself loose and unravels. Any suggestions?

(I have this problem with my regular buns too, and end up using a second elastic to fasten my bun ends... but that wouldn't work with this style)

Isilya
May 23rd, 2008, 11:05 AM
If your elastics are small enough, it could work. The ends have to be tucked in anyway, so the elastics wouldn't show.

You probably already thought of this, but maybe you could put some aloe vera gel on the ends to give them better hold.

My hair is nowhere near long enough to attempt this, but it's a very pretty style! I really appreciate those who take the time to write up how-to's like this. It really helps those of us wh are updo-challenged.

First attempt with my way-too-long-sticks that I don't like:
http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i17/happylynngilmer/05-21-08_1713.jpg

Second, with my only other matching sticks, the dangles. It looks much better, but I think trying to go around the dangles I might've gone under when I meant to go over and vice versa once or twice, because it did not come out even. But this is the version I wore out in public:
http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i17/happylynngilmer/05-21-08_1718.jpg

So I just need practice!

I did this one today. Your instructions were GREAT!

I tried it with four braids, and it worked very well, even with my (relatively) short hair - just below BSL. It seems like most buns look a bit skimpy until your hair gets to waist-length, but this one is nice and full.

I can't see a lot of pictures, is that a low post count thing?

This bun is really pretty, but someone mentioning the "+" shape made me think about maths themed hair dos. I'm pretty sad, I know. But it'd be cool to see who else thinks of maths!

I will try it when I get some new hairsticks, or if i find some of my old ones in complete pairs.

I think I prefer it unbraided as it shows the pattern better but braids must help a lot with what to tdo with the other 3 strands.

I don't think it has to do with the number of posts. I haven't noticed any invisible pics in this thread lately, apart from Trinka's, but maybe people have removed some pics from the site that hosts their photos.

If you like math-themed buns, there's also the figure 8 and the infinity bun :)

Thanks all :D I'm happy everybody seems to understand the instructions right away.

@ pdy2kn6: you might be able to skip the pinning on the 3 first strands if your hair is obedient/gets tucked in easily, because the last strand will cover those ends, but I doubt the last one will stay put on its own.

Thank you! It held really well even without pins! :D

pdy2kn6, that would be one way for those that don't want to use pins to put it up and have it hold.

I don;t have any hairsticks in pairs anymore (all that came paired, my hair ate one of them) and I am just DYING to try this. :(

@ SimplyLonghair: I really like that braided look, it makes the updo look more complicated.

No pencils? Or paintbrushes?

Please don't die, I read you just became a guru, you have to enjoy that first (congratulations, BTW!) :flowers:

Thank you! Your hairstyle is the one that I challenged Coriander to and she ended up creating a totally different style! So you could say that you started the inspiration!:D

I will try it--but not right now. I unaccountably have my hair successfully up in a figure 8 bun, and I don't want to argue with success!

Thanks for resurrecting a good thread, MarlieJane~!

This bun is great! My hair is -just- long enough to do it at my thickness. :D And it looks good with curls, AND it holds pretty well. Thanks!

Thanks so much for the well written instructions! I just tried this out and was actually able to do it. I usually don't have enough length yet for a lot of things. This is great because I just would stop and pin when I ran out of hair and it all balanced out in the end. Mine ended up a little lopsided but I still really like it. Thanks again!

Thanks, I've been looking for decent bun styles to do with my hair that I could understand the instructions for and didn't need hairtoys I didn't have for.

You could do this one with a pair of pencils! I did it with hairsticks though. Very easy and very cool looking, my first one was wobbly but the second was much better :D

MarlieJane, thanks for finding this thread! Isilya, thanks for a great tutorial!

It's not nearly as complicated as it looks. And the great thing is you can heavily oil or do a deep treatment all day and still look fantastic while you're at work or school.

Thanks, constantki!

I should've added that sometimes I don't wrap a section all the way around. Sections A and D ( the two on top) are slightly shorter/layered. For those sections I just went under, over, tuck, and pin.

Doing that I think someone with shorter hair might manage this style. Someone one to give it a try?

fairytalegirl did! Pics! If it was slightly unbalanced try tucking ends under where it gets too heavy instead of weaving them. I am also experimenting with weaving the tops in opposite direction from the bottom.

That is so cool. Now not that your instructions are not good, for they are, but is there any chance you could do step by step pictures or a YouTube video as that is allot more easy to follow than a diagram, I would really like to try this style, it is so pretty. :cheese:

I'm glad this thread got bumped. That is a really pretty style and incredibly great instructions! I'll be trying it soon.

I was going to tell Euphony (before I realized the thread was 2 years old lol) that Monkey King on Hawthorne sells pretty chopsticks for around $1 a pair.

Anyone wanting matching sticks, try a local import store and you should be able to find cheap and pretty chopsticks! They make them in children's sizes too, for those who have less head-eating buns than Euphony haha.

Thanks. Quick question: for the weaving, when you bring a strand over a point, it should end up coming close to the ponytail base before going under the next point, right? For example, on the beginning, when you take strand 1 (upper-left) and bring it under point A then over point B, it will just rest next to the ponytail base before going under point C, right? (I hope my question makes sense!)

Hope it's okay if I bump this - I just want to find out if I have the concept correct on the how to of this bun (see my post above!).

I think I understand what you are saying. Yes, when you are weaving the hair, you should keep the hair as close to the 'centre' (the ponytail base) as possible. HTH!

I was right there with you Venefica! I tried to visualize the style with her lovely instructions, but failed miserably. I tend to learn better by watching someone else do it. :o
But lo and behold, I found an excellent video and everything made sense! :)

Oh my gosh! Thanks for the youtube link. That did help a lot. That girl has some crazy thick hair. She needs longer sticks. I think my entire head of hair is probably one of the quarter sections she sectioned off! I can't wait to leave work today to try this.
