View Full Version : Chopping the layers off?

I'm brand new and I've been reading alot of posts, but I didn't find anything on layers. Should I keep the most top layer and keep trimming the most bottom layer? Or should I just chop it so it's all uniform?
Maybe it doesn't even matter?
Anyway, I can't stand this haircut so I might be looking for an excuse to change it up :D
Any advice?

I know layers can be annoying, but if you leave it for a few more months it will get past that shoulder flippy stage and it will look like long layers :) That's what I'm doing with mine!

Its really up to you and what end result you want. I have layers too and hate them! Im just growing it out as much as I can before I cut the bottom bit gradually and eventually all the layers out. Where you are at is a really annoying phase, I remember it well!
Id wait if I were you, it helped me get good length. I used SMT to keep my hair silky so the ends werent too annoying. You could S&D too to stop it feeling raggy- that drove me insane!
Your style still looks pretty good so I dont think you "need" a trim, its more your preference.
You just have to do what you feel is right for you. Give it a month and see if you feel them same way- cutting can be a big regret especially when your goal is 36+
Good luck!

It's all up to personal preference. If you cut it now, you'll get a blunt look, but if you grow longer before you cut, you'll still have length. I was too much of a wuss to cut my layers, and did it slowly, until there weren't any more layers

It's totally up to you. Personally I think your cut looks fairly good. If it were me I'd suck it up and wait it out a while. Long layers are "in" now and I think you could go to APL or BSL with your layers. I know they are a pain in the butt when you hate them. If you don't want to lose length now, I would make them look the best you can now. I had layers at your length and used a pomade stuff on the ends to weigh them down. It helped minimize the flippiness. At your present length you can rock half ups and peacock twists for a change up.

you never know you might like the layers when your hair's longer. If you cut them all off you'll lose alot of length. I think your haircut looks good, if your getting annoyed with it you could always try some different styles to reinvent it.

I'm just letting my layers grow out before trimming them even. I'm actually glad I did, because it looks like the longer I leave it off, the more the shorter layers are "catching" up to the longer layers.

Thanks, ladies. I'm feeling a lil better about this annoying stage now! The layers are razored so they flip out. I hated it the moment the hairdresser did it! But anyway, I think I'll keep it and see what it looks like 6 months from now. Now to work on my lack of patience... :D

Tough call -- it's really up to you. I love your length ... I personally have layers in mine and have let them grow out but I am getting them re-cut this week. If you are sick of your style maybe try bangs?

I will get rid of my layers.. possibly after I hit waist:)
Before I've gone the faster route and chopped them off first to a blunt cut because I hated the layers and I wanted to like my hair at every stage of growing..
Totally up to you, both options have their benefits! Your hair looks healthy and nice.

I know how annoying it is. I'm stuck with 4(!) layers. The bottom layer is somewhat past APL, the shortest is only chin length. I can't bare to lose the length, so I'm just sucking it up and letting it all grow out some more. I do get the layers trimmed every once in a while, because they start looking really scraggly if I don't. However, I make sure I always trim less off the layers than off the length, so they still catch up (very) slowly.
I think your hair looks pretty good. I would just wait it out for a while, untill you're 100 % sure of what to do with it. We don't want regrets. :)

Oh, I feel your pain! I'm growing out a long layer disaster and my bangs, too, in an effort to have thicker length. My longest layers are at BSL and when I braid or twist, I have strays falling out all over the place. And my last strand of "short" bangs (they were feathered) won't quite go behind my ears. I keep telling myself to hold on hold on and hold on some more that the length will get there.

Another thing you'll want to keep in mind, at least at later lengths, is that layers actually help with some updos.
Many LHCers have waited to waist or hip to get layers removed in favor of blunt cuts, and find that their favorite updos like cinnabuns do not work as well with the blunt hemline. Tapered and layered ends end to tuck better. :flower:

I had some pretty serious layers before joining LHC. Most of my hair was a layered bob and then there were long thin bits at the back and around the face- think emo hair. I got the long thin bits cut off and then started growing out the blended layers that made up the bob. It felt liberating. But it also was a huge change. I still have slight layers but the difference between the shortest and longest layer is about an inch rather than 9 or so.
At the end of the day it’s up to you! Post pics of whatever you do.
PS- I just looked at your pics again- I think your layers would grow out to look really nice.

I decided to cut my layers all off and grow from a blunt cut the first time I started growing my hair out. I ended up growing from chin length, and because of the blunt ends I STILL couldn't do any updo besides a cinnabun when I reached BSL. I got frustrated and had it cut back to shoulder length with layers. The second time I decided to grow it out I chose to leave it entirely alone and just go for length. I should be at waist length within a year and I expect I will be able to do some interesting styles well before then because I have thin ends from the layers.
I vote you leave it alone and let it grow. Ultimately the only way to ever get really long hair is to stop messing with it.
If I hit waist and decide I hate the layers, I figure I can maintain at waist until they're gone.

Try to be patient! You can start doing updos and more interesting things with your hair sooner if you keep the layers!

I'm in the same boat. I'm growing out my short for a while now and was debating whether or not to cut the end 1/2 inch or wait a bit. I'm in that floppy shoulder stage getting out of it.but then I haven't cut it in a over 5 Mon I think.

It looks like your layers are mostly towards the bottom so if you decided to just chop and get it over with you wouldn't lose a riddiculous amount of length. That is what I did to get rid of my layers (many years ago) and it felt good to be rid of them in one go plus I loved having a one length bob for a while.

It is awful to hate your layers...I do mine... but I think it would be better to let them grow a little and trim a little than chopping them off...

Everyone has some awesome advice. After tallying the votes, I'm going to leave it alone. I'll worry about it later if I decide the layers aren't my thing. Now to learn some updos... :)
