View Full Version : SL hairstyles? anyone?

Hi everyone!

I've been wondering, what up-dos would do for a shorter hair?:)

When it's not even BSL it's impossible to use most of those nifty buns you read about. :( And yet it would be neat to wear it up and protect the length and the edges.

My own hair is a bit below my shoulders, most of the time I end up wearing it in a boring peacock twist or a cinnabun secured with a hairstick (though the latter doesn't work so good - stick just won't stop slipping out - don't have enough length, I suppose.)

SL is an annoying length - that's just the length where you start noticing being referred to as "long-haired", but you don't really feel it . Besides, you don't feel too liberated with your styles. (Or is it just me lacking in imagination?)

You might have the same "half-way" length and have a few great suggestions, or you might have a much longer hair (in that case, please, think back to the time when it was SL), in any case, I'd really appreciate your contribution to the thread!

Thank you!

(Mine would be - peacock twist and cinnabun. Obviously, I need help. :))

French twists are perfect for your length. They only become increasingly unwieldy at longer lengths. Still possible, but more difficult.

I can't wait to get to that length so that I can do some twists ......

HintOfMint, thanks! I looked it up, it looks very elegant! I've seen those before but had no idea what they were called. (I'm such a newbie)

*frantically looks for a simple french twist turorial*

Yeah it would.

French twist won't work on me at that length. Hair is too slippery... at BSL I think I might *possibly* have enough hair that it is doable without slippage. Peacock twist I haven't figured out (yet). Cinnabuns will only work at that length for me with hairpins, and only with some pins... others don't have the right kind of grip. A hair stick won't work without rather a lot more length.

Various half ups *do* work on me at that length, and I really like just making a cinnabun half up.

French braids work really well for me. Regular braids don't, hair is too slippery.

Flip through ponytails probably don't work... hair too short. That rules out the Gibson Tuck as well, tho slippery makes that one hard too.

A Chinese bun *might* work.

A lot of stuff is really dependent on your hair not slithering tho. If your hair is slithery, figure some of the styles that work for a coarser texture at shoulder length might not work for you til past APL.

This video by Shaune Bazner helped a lot on my first updos:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KlPt81TzFn0

In April, I made that French Twist photo when I was just over SL:
http://a.imageshack.us/img691/5196/stachelschweinsilberfol.th.jpg (http://img691.imageshack.us/i/stachelschweinsilberfol.jpg/)

I love to wear three sticks in my buns. This French twist is fine with one or two sticks as well, and with forks. I have a BaerreisDesign Cygnet at 3,5" I'm very happy with for this updo.

This two videos were very useful at shoulder legth har as well:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-Meh8Swh38
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=roL-8kqQXOw
Both show the same basic style. The number of twists and the proper position for the stick depends on your hair.

Enjoy making updos!

I can do:

Peacock Twist
French Twist (I sometimes need to use aloe to help it stay put)
French Braid
English Braid
Chinese Bun (I need to use a scrunchi to help hold it)
Gibson Tuck
Pony tail
Topsy-tail
Sock Bun
Mrs. El Knot

Wow, I didn't realize I could do so many!:happydance:
My hair is just below shoulder length, not quite APL.

I'm just past shoulder length as well, and I can do a pencil bun in addition to the ones breezefaerie listed. If I'm careful, I can just do a split bun, but it takes a couple of tries and I've only been long enough for the past couple of days. I've also found that cinnabuns hold better for me with a second stick.

a pencil bun
How does is look like, and how do you make it? Looking for 'pencil bun' I found so many different styles!

For my cinnabuns, I need two sticks as well (and use three quite often just for fun) due to my layers that turn many hairstyles into a real challenge.

My hair is about SL now, and I can do a dutch braid :) I have really slippery hair as well. Worth a try, yeah? ;)

lol i have a video on my website on how to make them
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v512/kidmol/piggytails-1.jpg
they look weird yes? though its the hairstyle ive gotten the most compliments on... ignore the weird floppy bangs please.. this style works better for shoulder than it does for the longer hair in the pic

try doing 2 braids? maybe?

Peacock twist?

The Mrs. El knot (http://www.network54.com/Forum/242462/thread/1054023744/The+Mrs-+El+Knot---+%28aka+The+Hairstick+Knot%29) and variations of the Mrs. El knot worked for me around that length. In particular, starting the Mrs. El knot with the hairstick on top of the ponytail, wrapping hair once up and over, then rotating the stick whichever way makes it tighter and inserting/anchoring the updo worked at shoulder length on me. Handy for when your hair is in the way and you can't find a hair tie but can find a pencil :)

oh wow thank you all for the feedback!

torrilin, thanks for the tips, I have the same "slippage" problem. but dislike pins.

frost pattern, thanks, that's the first time I saw a french twist secured with hairsticks!
(<===newb)
I tried it (with 2 st.s) and it held amazingly well. That's a pretty picture of your hair, too :)

breezefaerie, thanks for the list! you know what, half of it I shall have to look up. Not that I dislike the task, though :)

excentricat pencil bun? :) as in, secured with a pencil?

ChatNoir sure! *looks for a youtube tutorial* :) I'll post a pic later if it turns out nice.

squiggyflop lol THAT is awesome! :D does it hold though? where's the video?

redneckprincess I liked it! In the absence of a flexi I'm going to try it with a hairstick.

tinti thanks for the article, I can't believe I missed it.

Arianwen yes, I know, it's comfy. But that's the style I usually wear, so, I'd rather try on smth new :)

teela1978 that looks great, but is there a video on it somewhere? :) Yeah, I exploit pencils the same way all the time. :D

holds like a rock when done properly.. i can run with it.. click my name.. then click 'visit my homepage' or something like that.. and then when you get to my site i think its the combination video.. half of it is for soft hair twisters..

is the typical mrs. el knot. modifying it to shorter hair pretty much just eliminates the part where the length is wrapped around the stick. I think I actually stuck the stick in vertically to the left of my ponytail with the point down, pulled the hair over the stick, rotated the stick clockwise to a vertical position, and then flipped/stuck the stick back into scalp hair. No video that I know of for the shorter hair version.

ETA: actually, this is close to what I used to do

SL and slippery hair here. I can do a Gibson Tuck tho it's not pretty and full. Some braids. Lots of half ups which protect the front and canopy.

I looked up the tutorial on the Mrs. El Knot, and its the same thing that I found on youtube called a pencil bun. You can use a pencil, or a stick like I usually do. I didn't realize they were the same thing.

At shoulder length, I did mostly French/Dutch braids (single and double) and double buns...you may be able to do a sock bun, too.

Have you tried a sock bun? That way you're using the sock for your "bulk", but with shoulder-length hair, you won't have as much leftover hair to hide around the bun. It always makes my fine hair seem so much thicker. :)

My favorites are the peacock twist and braids! I also do messy buns a lot

I'm right on shoulder length at the moment and my hair styles consist of messy buns/twists with the ends out held with forks, pins, sticks, and clips.

My lack of ability to make different buns is counteracted by the different toys I use.

Also, changing the direction of the twist can dramatically change the look.

My favorite is the "wrapped hairstick bun," it holds beautifully in my hair!
