View Full Version : I (think I) made up a new bun for my APLish layered hair (tutorial pics)

its really easy, looks complicated and makes even LHCers think your hair is way longer then it is, ...kinda looks like a cheater figure 8 IMO

*I dont know why some of the pics are so large, sorry for that I really tried to fix them...maybe they will adjust in time...

all you need is a pony tie (or 2) and a Flexi-8

http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab243/happyhippy31/Picture032.jpg gather hair into a pony near top of hair just above earline...

http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab243/happyhippy31/Picture033.jpg do not pull the hair all the way through on final pony loop...

http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab243/happyhippy31/Picture034.jpg seperate loop in half to make 2 sections...

http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab243/happyhippy31/Picture035.jpg I pull up remaining hair over center of loop, because of my layers I cannot pull the loop through to the ends...(looks like a bow tie to me...maybe we should call this a bow tie figure 8 bun, lol)...

http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab243/happyhippy31/Picture036.jpg place flexi over hair...slide flexi pin through center of loop on side...

http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab243/happyhippy31/Picture040.jpg place pin under pony ties and through loop on oppisite side, and sucure...

http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab243/happyhippy31/Picture038.jpg add pins if needed to hold down flyaways...

http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab243/happyhippy31/Picture037.jpg enjoy...and post your own pictures!! :cheese::cheese:

FYI: the deep red in my hair is MP-VR over henna, not just henna

apparently your only allowed 10 images per post - though I only have 8, it wont let me put up anymore or edit the post without removing more.....so here is a pic from the side...

That's one neat looking bun, love the flexi-8 too!

WOW! I totally love this! Even though my hair is longer, my layers don't allow me to do much. I don't have a flexi but I'll try it with a barrette i have.

thanks for posting this!

ETA: I love the color of your hair!

Oh cool, I love your haircolor by the way :) I do not own a flexi-8 and until yesterday did not even know what it was :P Now I have to go look for one so I can try this out :D

I like it! I got to buy a flexi-8 though. Here, hairsticks and flexi-8 are so hard to find. Is flexi8.com a safe website and company to order from?

Oh, I really like that! My hair is APL and layered, and my first flexi's are on the way. :D Can't wait to try it! Thanks for sharing!

Very pretty! Looks easy too, I will definitely have to try.

Must get a flexi 8 first though.

I had never seen them before and was just checking out the website. They have some great styles on there.

I'm glad you all like it, and yeah without the layers I'm sure it can be done with sticks!!

Its the "elegant" style I came up with for work last week, watch for it in the last scene next year the movie "Real Steel" comes out, it should be making an apparence :)

I do a very similar bun, but put the remaining hair around the elastic before opening the loop.
And I use a hairstick, I don't have flexi-8
Lovely hair =]

That is lovely. Thanks for sharing. And for those unsure about ordering from the Flexi site, I've ordered several times and always had good service. No affiliation, just a satisfied customer. I wear Flexi's for my night bun, and at least one other bun pretty much every day. I seem to mostly alternate between them and sticks.

Super cute! I've never seen this one before, and your tutorial was reeaally easy to follow. My hair is long enough to do regular Figure-8, but because it's so thin it looks terrible. I'm going to see if I can do this method instead!

This is awesome! Thank you for posting this. I did it with my hair, though I had to alter it a little since mine is tailbone length. I just split the part that went up and tucked each part carefully under the corresponding bow part. Then I tortured my poor little flexi-8 like thing and made it hold it all. I think I only had to use one bobby pin. Then I just braided the ends.

BlueMuse, that looks great!

I don't have enough hair yet to do it even the original way, but I'm curious now if you or someone else with long hair might try the entirety of it with two braids. ie:

- make a regular ponytail, split it into two, braid each half

- with another pony holder, make the bow "loops" of the braids (as if starting the original version), then crisscross the braid endings up across and down the way you did with your ends in the photos above

I think it would be pretty, but I'm going to have to wait several years to try it myself. If anyone tries it, I'd love to see pics!

Thanks everyone :). Goldenoak I will definitely try your suggestion and take some pictures when I do! I would do it today, but I put my hair back in the original bow because it's so comfy and I have guests coming. I love showing off my new hair styles.

I love it! But I am so hair toy deprived it's not funny. :( All I have is a bunch of scrunchies & one plastic claw clip.

I really need to harp on hubby to buy me some toys...I've been wanting a flexi 8 for a while now too....

Anyways, thanks for sharing. I can't wait to try this!

Wow, fantastic!! I will try this - my hair is bsl but the thickness makes buns hard to do even now... I don't have an flexi-8 either but maybe it'll work with a stick or something...

Oooh, I'm going to have to try this this weekend, though likely with a barette instead of a Flexi-8, given how I don't have one of those...

BlueMuse
September 6th, 2010, 02:57 PM
Alright! I gave the braided bow a try. It made for a bulkier center than the non braided form, and my poor little slide may not be long for this world. I did three braids on each side and then braided them together to make a more substantial loop for each bow side. Then, once everything was clipped in place I separated out the ends.

I think I might try a regular three strand braid the next time. I'm fairly happy with how it came out, but I think my fears that a single braid wouldn't be substantial enough to hold the bow shape may have been unfounded.

That was a very cute updo :) I will try it on both me and DD tomorrow :)
Well I did try it but it was a total failure on DD :P The flexi8, sx small, was to small and it was the only barrette I had right now. On me, using flexi8 sz large, it worked and looked allright I guess:
http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g299/eamane74/hair/IMG_7853red.jpg
I wrapped the ends up under the bun and had to use a few hair pins to make them stay.

Thanks, redneckprincess! That's one beautiful bun! What size is your flexi-8?

BlueMuse, your bun is beautiful, too! Love the braids!

I plan on trying this and posting a pic, but not now - my hair is drip drying for next few hours. I am now going to be miserable while waiting. :( Where did I put the fan...? :hmm:

BTW all... If you don't have a flexi-8 or similar toy, you can use a stick and a hair elastic like Finoriel uses for her chignon. I am going to use one with glittery glass flower. Here is an example of how to use it:

I love Flexi 8. I want to buy some, but the shipping cost to Chile is very expensive (insert sad song here)

I finally got a pic! I couldn't find my black stick at first and my right loop kept getting mashed. Then I found my stick and tried again. I swear my loops did not look that huge in the mirror!

We have got to name this and get the mods to put it in the hairstyle articles.

Thats a nice updo! The finished bun looks more complicated that it is and it seems as though you have very long hair! I'll have to try this when my hair grows longer.

I suggest "bow bun"
I made one and I posted a picture in the flexi-8 thread. I used an xlarge and now wish I'd custom ordered an xxl...

I tried this out too and it didn't look that good on my hair :(

I think I did the loops too big (ie I pulled the hair through too far)
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=847&pictureid=85150
and the loops didn't really stay all that flat to my head (I have to pin them down)
Did I put the flexi in wrong?

Yay! A new hair style I can try. Will give it a go soon. I recently bought some flexi 8's so can't wait to try this new do. Thank you! By the way redneckprincess you hair looked great in the photo's!
