Only about 4" to go to Classic!

I have a ridiculously long waist, so I've been solidly in hip range for about 2 inches, but it's just starting to look like hip now. I'm also excited to say that my hair's been growing at about 1 inch per month, so in a couple months, I should be approaching TB! I think that's partially due to a scalp scrub I've been using. I'm happy to share if anyone wants the recipe! :D

Well, Friday night I decided to take about 3 inches off my hair. I'm back at Waist, but those blunt ends look so nice. I think I'll keep it here for a while, and try to get the thickest ends I can. My original goal was Waist, so I'm happy enough here.

I have determined that I am at BCL now! :cheer: There is still a couple of centimeters or so to go until my hair reaches TBL (at least when dry - when I am in the shower and it is sopping wet, it is that long. :D)
I don't think I'll officially "graduate" until June - I plan to have a trim in May or June that will set me back a bit. But it is great to see that my length is increasing.:D:cheese:

i wanna join!! when stretched wet, my hair just about reaches the very top of my tailbone. i trimmed about 2 inches off 2 weeks ago using fey's method so it would have been longer.
my goal length is to the knee. so hopefully i can soon move from this thread to the "tailbone to classic" thread.

I have recently had some problems with my hair and have not had it brushed out for on and a half month. When I finally got it all untangled today and brushed out I found my hair now reach the (forgive my language.) top of the well crack, so I assume that mean I am almost to tail bone, or have just reached it.

Congratulations to everyone on their progress!

I have a question - I am noticing that my hair is much more prone to tangling and knotting up now at almost TBL than it has ever been. Is anyone else experiencing an increase in knots/tangles with the longer lengths? Do you have suggestions/solutions for dealing with it? I ended up ripping a pea-sized knot out of my hair this morning because I was in a rush, and I do NOT want to go through that trauma again!!:wail:

MedievalManiac...I have this same problem. Seems like after hip length it has all been tangles tangles tangles. I really wanted to grow to classic. I made it a couple inches past TBL and I just trimmed an inch due to heavy splits (also an issue I did not relaly have before hip length). I was tempted to trim back to hip, before all my issues began. I intend to stick it out for now, I figure I can always trim later.

I have seen this very issue brought up several times in the TBL to Classic thread or other places. It just seems to be a magic length for some hair types to tangle. I think I asked the very same question not long ago. I have had those pea sized knots and I have learned to finally trim them out instead of detangle because it does less damage, so I, like you, want to prevent those at all costs. I literally almost cry when it happens.

I am trying to figure out if there is another "magic length" where the issue disappears. Like, Classic +. At this point I think I may never reach Classic because of the tangle issue and I cannot seem to wear it down anymore without incurring a lot of damage for this reason or other reasons, like the whole of my tresses just gets unruly and will not be tamed when down. I am forever having to move it out of the way or something and by the end of the outing I am exhausted of my hair, I usually end up putting it up about an hour after I leave the house. The car is especially brutal, even tho I try to be careful. Seatbelts being the main issue, or rubbing on the seat. I am kind of "over" the tangle issue and considering maintaining at TBL or Hip because of it.

I'm right at the start. When I stand up straight the bottom of my hair is at my waist, haha. My ultimate goal is tailbone. Right now that is my “dream” length and from there I’ll decide if I want to go longer. It’s gonna be a long haul though because I still have heat damage from previous hair abuse. D:

My hair do have easier to tangle now yes and I guess that will only get worse as it get longer. Do not worry about a pea size knot, I have done that many times, sometimes I have pea size knots I can just not untangle and they end up being pulled loose. A pea sized knot is not many hairs when they are this long it do not matter.

After not really paying much attention to my hair for the last few weeks, I was delighted to find this morning that my hair is definitely past waist (unstretched) and on it's way to hip.

I am still measuring stretched length for my records but only really paying attention to unstretched (that is the realistic, everyday, what you see length). I can't wait to get past hip unstretched and well into uncharted territory.

I feel ready to growl at my hair right now. My ends will tangle at the slightest provocation - not that that surprises me. There is still some chemical damage there, and that is part of the problem.
I am hoping that I would get to tailbone for my birthday, (near the end of June) but it might not happen. I have decided that I need to do more frequent trimmings, so I will gain length more slowly - but my ends will be healthier! I will have to focus on that, instead of sniffling every time I reach for my hair scissors (I trimmed away 1 cm today)

Alvrodul - I understand your frustration.

I have hair which has only had cassia (with a touch of henna) to mid way between my shoulders and BSL - this hair is soft and silky.

The hair from there down to the end has had chemical treatments and are terribly tangley - getting worse the closer they get to the ends.

I am so torn between loving the length and cutting it all back to just above BSL - I think I will deal with the tangles and continue with regular S&D and my 3 inch trims once a year. I cannot bear the thought of having such short hair again.

I'm brand brand new but as tailbone is my ultimate goal and I am currently just past waist length... this seems like an appropriate hang out!

My greatest struggle at the moment being this length is plaiting my hair straight. I start off going back down my head, down over my shoulders and then have to pull the hair around and finish up infront - so my plait does a 90 degree turn! Is there some trick to getting a lovely straight plait?

I had a serious chop almost 2 years ago for similar reasons - not from dyeing, but too much wearing it down/in ponytails and messing about with hairstyles and curls and so on. It was so hideously frustrating to deal with and my ends felt like a paintbrush.

Chopping it back to shoulder length was rather sad, but it has been the best thing I could have done, since the whole length of my hair has grown under decent care. It looks much healthier and is really soft and manageable. My hair-dye addicted sister can't believe the difference in texture between her hair and mine now ;p

Only you can decide of course what's right for you, but if the bottom hair is really that bad it might be a relief for you too to start 'fresh' as it were with a whole head of nice, healthy hair.

I'm having a hard time visualizing what's going wrong. You don't have super-coarse hair so I don't know why you'd have a 90 degree bend in your braid. If your hair is waist length, I think gravity should pull it almost straight, even if you screw it up several times on the way down! ETA: I get it! You didn't say 'bend' you said 'turn'. So it twists on you? Ok I get it now (facepalm).

You're just talking about an English braid, right, not French? Once I get as far as the bottom of my neck (hands up over my shoulders, braiding), and I can't stretch my arms any further, I bring the braid over my right shoulder (because I'm right handed). I need to look in a mirror at that point to make sure I'm not skipping a section, and just carry the braid on at the side there, instead of in the back.

I hope that helps, but there are some braiding tutorial videos that might help you. Pinkbunny's (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E5ORNREF2rA) talks about correcting a too-thin braid section halfway through the braid. She has thigh-length hair! At min 2:08 in the video she brings it over her shoulder.

Jomo
April 21st, 2011, 06:39 AM
Haha that's what I do! Or try to do, anyway - somehow my braid ends up doing a half-turn every time, so the very end is facing to one side while to top is facing straight back. Yes, an English braid :) just a normal plait - I'm so hairstyle-incompetent that I honestly cannot even do a French braid. I so badly want to learn but even when I used to do pigtail plaits I'd manage to totally mess them up :P

I find that if I am braiding my hair too tightly, I get a twist in there, too. I don't braid my hair super tight and when I pull it over my shoulder, I do so before I really need to. I find that waiting until I just cannot reach anymore was part of the issue (the "bend" was actually from the braid beginning to curve up as I struggled to reach it). I pull it in front a couple bumps before that. Also, I turn my head way too the right as I pull it over my left shoulder, so the back of my head is still fairly aligned with the braid, and keep it that way until I am done or close to the bottom where it doesn't matter anymore.

Jomo
April 21st, 2011, 06:59 AM
the turning your head to line up makes so much sense and I can't believe it didn't occur to me... I'm always staring in the mirror intently making sure I don't plait the same side twice over :/ I don't plait all that tightly but yeah, I think I'm causing it by literally turning my plait around in comparison to the way my face is pointing...

If you are getting a kink or twist in your braid, try not bringing it over your shoulder. Braid as far as you can and then bring it straight up the back of your head as you braid. I've always braided this way and have never had the kink problem.

Thank you for the encouragement!I get so frustrated sometimes at those ends of mine, although I suppose most people would say they aren't really all that bad. And thanks to faithful S&Ding, I even manage to keep my splits down to a manageable level. And using Nightblooming's Panacea also helps.
But the ends persist in giving me grief.
The last 5-6 cm are the worst, and 10 cm or so above that is also quite bad.
Nothing much to do except to keep trimming, and babying those delicate ends. I'll reach my goals eventually!

I love your hair, can't wait for mine to be as long as yours.

My hair has grown back to waist after my cut to an inch above, its creeping slowly past. I do think though that mine grows quicker once it reaches waist. I am looking at next January before I reach hip and another 12 months until TB but thats fine as I am at last enjoying my hair.

I am struggling with brushing/combing it as i can not reach the ends and they tend to fluff up at the ends, other that reaching from behind and brushing it that way which hurts as I have arthritis in my hands and shoulder, how do I do this? I have to ask my DH or DD to do this for me, is there an easier way?

I gather the hair at the nape of my neck with one hand then lean to the side and use my other hand to brush it from the front. This keeps it lined up straight down the back but still lets me pull it to the side to brush. Also, it will get a little easier as it gets longer because you won't have as far up to reach.

Oh, I've been going through the same thing! I'm aaaaaaaaaalmost thinking about going back to 'cones, because I know I'm losing hair from the snarls, and my ends are thin enough as is!

I don't use 'cones because to get them out I've always thought I'd HAVE to use sulfates, which trash my hair. I don't like the 'cone buildup because it makes my hair lie lank and flat.

But maaaaaaybe I can try harder with non-sulfate shampoos to get the buildup out, when necessary. And be super careful to only condition from the nape down. Also I have found some mousses I like to help with the volume issue aaaaaaand (don't hit me!) I bought a hair dryer that has a "cool" setting and a diffuser- it feels on my arm like room air that's being fanned at high speed towards me. I can't imagine how it would hurt my hair, but it does give more volume and texture (AND helps with tangles).

Eeep, I measured today for the first time in months, and I've gained an inch (and some change) up to 34" !

My ends are as thin as ever- I only had maybe one microtrim in that time. I really want my ends to be better so I should trim more.

I don't really think trimming with the moons works, but I think it's a nice idea for feeling tied to the rhythms of nature . . . so is it the new or the full moon you should trim on?

I have gone back to cones and cannot recall which thread I read it on but I am using my non-sulfate shampoo, my cone-free conditioner and using a coney conditioner as a leave in (only ears down). I just started, so jury is out, but my hair definitely has more slip and I cannot say I have had any knots. This is my compromise because I have the same issues with cones as you.

I just went somewhat sulfate free using Pureology, I did notice it made my hair a lot knottier... I do have about 4 inches of bleach damage left in my hair, and maybe 10 inches of dye (which was done about twice at most, once deposit only and the second time permanent) left until it's henna virgin.

I daydream about cutting 4-6 inches off, but I chicken out. I am doing the no trims on 2011 challenge and the planning to cut back a large amount. I am almost at full hip, so I am hoping that I could cut back either to hip or past waist... But we'll see...

Of course, now that I've hit my goal I have delima of "what do I do now?" I know I want to clean up the ends a bit, but they are not as bad as I was expecting them to be at this length. A few months maintaining and I think the stragglers will be more or less caught up with the runners.

I've been growing for so many years now I'm not sure I know how to maintain at one length for long.

I finally took a length photo.
I'm probably due for a trim, but I hate to shop any off since this is the longest my hair has been since I was maybe 8 years old.

Both sides are shorter than the back, but one managed to hide itself for the photo. It's face-framing layers that have been growing out for a long time.

I had those. They eventually were trimmed in, but many of my "framing" hairs are at terminal, probably more from damage with updos than actual terminal length. You can see I have some taper going on, it is just not that bad.

still slowly on my way to tailbone and then classic. Was looking at pictures from today. How long do you think I have to go to hip? I can't decide if i'm there or not. Please ignore the braidwaves. It's naturally straight, but i've been wearing it in a braid pretty much constantly for days.

Hello! I'm posting in this thread for the first time. I was at "can I call this waist?" for a while, these days I'm solidly at waist and approaching "can I call this hip?" haha. I have very thin/fine hair. A the thickest part it's probably ~1.5 inches circumference and at the ends I'd be surprised if it's 1.5 cms!
Pre-LHC the longest I ever grew my hair was BSL, and I was convinced that was my terminal length. By BSL my ends were always so ratty I had to chop back to APL. I'd grow to BSL and chop to APL over and over for the first 21 years of my life!
These days, my ends past waist have the same ratty feeling as they used to beyond BSL in my pre-LHC days... I really don't know what to do about it. I think it's over-use of Coconut Oil (velcro-ends syndrome) but if I don't use a ton of coconut oil then they feel so dry and frizzy...
Recently I switched from WO (about a year) to CO with non-cone conditioners and the condition of my hair improved a bit... I also use ACV occasionally, and shampoo very rarely when I feel I really have to remove build-up.
I generally trim 1/4 to 1/2 inch every 3 months, or as needed... I feel that I will 'need' to trim more often for a little while, maybe every other month...
Also, (while I'm listing all my discontents!) the left side of my hair is several inches longer and much thicker than the right side, and the middle has a clump that is MUCH shorter and thinner than either. I have like a reverse V going on. I found out this is from the way my mother cut my hair for all those years, by parting it in the center and cutting around on the ends. Now that I cut my hair with the hair combed strait back over the top of my head, there's this weird inverted-V effect. It drives me batty!

Thank you for your patience reading my post!

I was solidly at waist in Feb(29.5in), but then I cut off 2.5 inches to get rid of awkward face framing layers. Now I'm wishing I had saved my length and cut a "V" instead of straight across. I'm currently at "Can I call this waist?"(28.75). With minimal trimming and 0.5in a month(I'm being optimistic, most months I get less than that), I'm a year away from hip, a year and a half away away from TB (meaning my actual tail bone, which is a couple inches below my bum crack), and two years away from classic.

I am just barely at tailbone. :cheese: This is the longest it has ever been & I'm loving it. I was doing a bend at the waist brush out & scalp massage a couple days ago, when someone came to my door. So I quickly flipped my hair back (which I Never do) & my hair hit the rotating ceiling fan!!! My first thought was wow, that was Cool, second thought was oh crap! I hurt my hair.

I've been at can-I-call-this-waist for well over a year now, I think I've hit a major stall. Tailbone seems so far away =( My hair naturally grows in a very strange looking reversed V that I hate but I don't want to cut it back to the shortest layer because then I'd lose the waist length. Then also I've been shedding a lot lately and my hair is getting more and more wavy every few months. Right now I'm experimenting with CO, I hope it'll help.
*sigh* be patient Lucy, be patient.... T___T

Hey, Loepsie, I also have those waist-stalls. It just seems I'm at waist for a whole eternity, and it is not coming down towards hip! I think it may be due to the body shape. As for me, for example, BSL, waist and down to hip are a long way to go, but hip and tailbone length are pretty close, yay! :D

Now I think I'm slowly approaching hip. This is the stage when I actually begin to feel my hair as long hair, so I enjoy it!

And of course, patience is the key word.

I'm just visiting this thread cause I'm not at waist yet, but I felt the need to comment on your photo tigereye! Your hair is lovely, and you are definitely at hip/past hip!! I think it depends on where you define "hip" lol. But to me, your waist is the narrowest part, and then you flare out to hip, and the part where your body is hip looks to me at least 2" above your current hair length! Some people consider the hip lower (and when measuring their "hip" they measure around the butt), but your actual hip is higher than that!

I recently made it to waist :cheese: so I am checking in here. I go back and forth in my mind about my goal length, either hip or tbl. I'll see what it looks like at hip.

Loepsie, CO definitely helped me a LOT with shedding. Ever since I started CO-ing, I have shed so much less it's crazy. I hardly ever notice shedding during the day or in the shower. Usually I'll find a hair or two in my comb after I comb my hair. And I used to have a handful of hair come out in the shower. So good call and good luck with the CO!

Hi! I would like to ask you all question. I am not sure what lenght this is it is past waist, is not? So is it hip yet? I must say that I dont see such big differences betwen waist/hip/tailbone - I placed my hand where I have tailbone ... So what do you think? What lenght is this? I am quite small.

Hmm I am searching on internet and maybe where I placed my hand is not tail bone (my sister told me that there we have tail bone ... I dont know anymore, I am quite lost in this question ....)

I must be having a summer growth spurt. It took forever for me to feel like I was really at waist length, and I really only considered myself there a month or so ago. But I was measuring and feeling where my hair ends today and I realized that I'm only about 1.5 inches away from hip!

It's making me want to try Monistat again to see if I can get there faster. Last time I used Monistat I gained an inch in a month and maybe .5 inches in circumference (from my baby hairs growing out enough to be included in the measurement, I assume. I didn't use it long enough to see if the new growth was any thicker than my pre-Monistat growth).

Well my hair is tickling my buttcrack when it is sopping wet in the shower. Otherwise it's still hanging out below hip... I've been neglecting it lately, which is not good. I know its health has declined a little. Need to get on top of it, but its' still growing! I'm trimming by the lunar calendar, and my next trim will be in July. :)

Is anyone else having to "baby" their ends more as it gets down to tailbone & beyond??
I'm noticing my ends are looking a bit worse here lately, which, a small micro-trim probably wouldn't hurt them either.:p

It also seems like my ends are getting 'in the way' the longer it gets, like using the potty, I'm now noticing that I have to bring it around to the side before sitting down...lol.:o
Little things like that.

Well, I'm officially bidding this thread 'farewell', and I do wish you all much fun and learning as you make the journey to tb!

I found LHC almost 2 years ago (June 2009 and joined July 2009), when I was between bsl and waist--thinking my hair was soooo long then! lol

I came looking for how to get my hair to stay in a bun, and learned that it would take a LOT more length to do the updos I was wanting, so here I am on a longhair journey, now past tb and on my way to classic...thanks LHC!!

Hi Folks, it looks like I belong in this thread, since I have hip length hair. My hair tends to break fairly easily, and I am always finding broken off ends, so I was wondering, is that because I use cone filled conditioner or could it be something else? I have been babying my hair a lot more since I found LHC, but I still have unbelievably weak hair.:( Any thoughts?

SparrowFlock, how do you wear your hair? If you wear it loose a lot then it is likely to get caught on or between things and get damaged. I see you are a new member (Welcome!) so I recommend reading through all of the hair care/newbie articles in the Articles section. To help the broken ends keep from splitting and breaking more, cut cleanly above the break with sharp scissors. Many of us do Search & Destroy missions in our hair on a regular (if random) basis to cut out just the damaged hairs. This can help prevent additional damage. If your breaks are at your ends, regular micro-trims can also help.

Thanks for the advice, I have been looking through the articles and there are so many that I don't think I am even near the end of them yet. :o They are extremely helpful though. I usually wear my hair up, and I have started to search and destroy, but maybe what I really need is a good trim. I have been trying to figure out what could cause the breakage, and I am thinking it might be because my hair tangles very easily, especially at the ends. Hmm, maybe oil would help my hair "slip" more and reduce the crazy tangles I get...

I know you have been busy reading articles but here is what I would suggest: Do an intense clarify. Find a good sulfate shampoo (any kind is good but don't get one with cones in it) and wash your hair. Let the poo sit on your hair in the shower for a good 5 min. Rinse thoroughly, repeat once more. Then apply your cone conditioner and let it sit at least 5 min, you can even wrap it up, get out and leave it in an hour. GO back and rinse it out thoroughly. THOROUGHLY. Apply some diluted vinegar. I use a very diluted, about 1/4 vinegar, 3/4 water, mix. I use an old dish soap bottle and squeeze it into my hair. It is always cold so I do it very quickly (squeeze onto scalp and let it flow down the length). Immediately rinse THOROUGHLY once again. Now, apply your conditioner again (not a lot) and work though your hair. Rinse, but maybe not so thoroughly this time. I detangle while still in the shower druign my final condition.

I do this when my ends feel crunchy or get like velcroe or "thick". I have saved myself many a trim by fixing my ends instead of cutting them. Sure my ends have some splits and dead-heads but if I can get thoe babies to slip and slid, they won't break as easily. HTH!

Waitingsolong I might gonna try yourr tip too. I never did a vinegar rinse and it might be time to try it.

Well my hair is getting so close to tailbone,i'm sure this summer i'll make it.
My hair tangles a lot though, the first wash day its perfect and smooth but the longer i stretch the more tangles i get. And i'm not even gonna try anymorre to detangle because it will only cause breakage. I hate to walk around with unkempt hair and dont know what to do. I love my hair but it looks really nasty for example on day 3 while on day 1 its perfect.."Sigh" bipolar hair of mine

I have same problem with tangles and breakage...when i comb it i get tons of 1-2 inch broken hairs...and same as Avital, 3rd day is a hell...my hair doesn't even get that dirty/greasy, but i do wash it 4th day cuz it looks unkempt and so tangly it hurts..
can any sls shampoo do, as clarifying?
i was thinking...to try and make a leave-in..conditioner + water see if that helps...?
it's 2 things i haven't tried..

ACV rinse is great, makes hair so shiny but it didn't help this problem..
And i CWC..so there's a lot of conditioner..

The only thing that helped my velcro/breaking ends was to do tiny microtrims every now and then and use coconut oil often. Having naturally curly hair makes it worse too I think, my hairs just love to tie themselves up in knots. I am hovering on BCL but I keep having to trim to keep it healthy :/

I started doing the ACV first, before the wash, and this seems to make a difference on smoothness. Too much conditioner can mean a clarify may be needed, then start fresh. YMMV!

Having read the various comments on my length in my anniversary thread, I have taken notice of how long it is now, and come to the conclusion that I am at BCL now. I'll have my husband take a picture when I arrive at tailbone, but my hair is also looking nicer down as I did indeed go back to cones (I still have not touched sulfates). My hair is tangling less, looks thicker, and is much shinier. YAY!

That part seemed to take the longest for me, too. I am trimming 1/4 inch each month, but on months when I am down about thinner ends or they just seem to need it, I cut as much as 1/2 inch. Since I grow 3/4 inch a month pretty consistently, I'm still gaining length, but it is slow with the trimming...hang in there, as it is worth it for the length with the nicer ends. Your hair is lovely!

My routine didn't change at all when I arrived at tailbone, which is probably why my ends started thinning out like crazy. I never wore my hair up, so the ends were constantly getting sat upon/caught in things/rubbed against... you get the idea. This time I'm wearing my hair up daily and though I remember not really having split ends until I hit BSL last time, this time my hair seems to be in better shape and not split at BSL. Perhaps I'm celebrating too soon.

Arya- Your hair looks as though it is the exact same length as mine. Other than the color, it looks almost exactly the same as mine in texture and thickness. Weird.

I need to take a new length shot. It has been to long since I've taken ANY pics of my hair!

My original goal was for my hair to reach the tattoo on my lower back. Now that it is there, I decided to aim for tailbone.

ETA: I am 5'7" and my current length, 35", is just about at hip for me.

Well. those waves at the bottom are from being partially dried in a bun. My hair is naturally a little wavy and bendy, but if I comb it/touch it/detangle it, it just turns into body wave, like a long S. I guess I'm somewhere between 1b and 1c, but 1cs seem to have more resilient wavy tendancies than mine.

And thanks McFearless! I'll measure in again when it's really truly at waist.

The layers make it look scraggy.

Just here, cos it's wet. I promise, it's far from scraggly, and I am never ever ever giving up my layers. I look like an overgrown 12 year old without them. Here's my hair with braidwaves, you can see the hemline is still quite thick.

Your hemline is thicker than mine. My ponytail circumference is just hovering at 2 inches. I don't want to know what the circumference is near the bottom. It is definitely much thinner than yours.

I can never decide if I am a 1b or 1c. It is 1b (and 1a during drier months) if I finger comb it while it's drying, but a 1c if I totally leave it alone while wet. I only get S waves at my nape, and only on my left side.

I was surfing the web tonight with my hair down and over my shoulder when I realized that it was actually resting on the desk! I hadn't realized it had gotten so long! So I measured it and I'm back to the length I was when joining LHC! :cheese: I trimmed an inch or so shortly after joining in May, and my hair grows very slowly, so regaining that length makes me very happy! I'll post a photo tomorrow because I'm not sure if I should maintain at waist (my goal after trimming in May) until my hemline thickens, or if I should continue to hip. Tonight, I realized that my new goal is at least tailbone, though... hehe.

@motormuffin (for some reason it won't let me quote)

No they don't! Your hair is sooooo thick. Seriously. If you do want to get rid of layers, I'd take it really slow and only after you have reached your goal length. Your hair is thick from root to tip.

I went to the salon for a trim yesterday, and I must say that went very well. (Full story here (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=73187).) I got rid of most of the scraggly bits of at the tips, which means I won't feel guilty if I just ignore my hair for 3-4 months, with just S&D sessions at intervals.
There is still a certain amount of mechanical damage on the lower half of my hair, but getting rid of the worst bits does feel good! :D It means I can just relax and let my hair grow. :cheer:

When I first joined Waist to Tailbone I thought that it would be a little while that I'd be here, I had no idea that I'd still be here a year later :( I guess because it covers such a span that it takes long enough on it's own then when I go and get trims it just makes it that much longer

Oh well! It is a lovely group and it's always nice to see the new waist lengths join :D

I hope I'm not here for too long. When I joined this site I was at tailbone, but did a chop to about hip. I hadn't had even a trim in over a year and felt it was warranted. If I had only spent some time on this site first I probably wouldn't have cut as much, if at all. :( It seems like my hair grows so slowly. I never paid that much attention to my hair before so I'm not sure what's up.

Luckily, I get to start here.

I am just about hip length. I used to be at terminal length, (around classic,) for many years. I have done a couple of minor donations. The last of those was Jan 2009. There was a lot of stress in my life and I noticed that my hair was drying out at the same time. I chopped to the bottom of my shoulder blade, (the shortest it has been since 7th grade,) before it got too gross to be of any use to anyone. For that time until joining LHC last month, I have grown it out with a regime of shampooing the roots and conditioning the ends every two-three days with any old cheap products I found at the store. I figured I was being good because I didn't use styling products, artificial colors, perms, or heat styling. I had no idea there was so much to learn.

It's a good thing that we can't change screen names because I would be changing mine to Capt. Oblivious. I had always assumed that my hair was stick strait, which is still on my profile, but it is actually a bit curly. I have always worn my hair braided or up for so long that I assumed that any wave in my hair was from the braid or bun I had been wearing.

I am completing my first full week of baking soda wash/ACV rinse. I love it! My hair is softer than it has been in many, many years. I suspect the dry, brittle feeling of my hair had been from product build up.

My goal is to get back to terminal length with a think hemline this time, instead of the broken fairy tale hemline I had when I was in college.

I've been debating about what to do with my hair for the past few weeks, saw this thread, and figured I'd finally join. I've been maintaining at hip (35-36") for what feels like ages. The debate is whether I should grow to a goal I set quite some time ago of 40", which would be sort of upper tailbone, or lower BCL. I'm just not sure if I could handle the length. I guess I should grow it and find out :)

I guess I belong here now. I changed my present length to read "waist" under my avatar and put up a new siggy pic today. I joined the forum here January 2008 and have pics all along my journey in my albums.

I can't believe my hair is finally this long! I will do a small (rare) trim possibly around the holidays, to neaten it up, maybe two inches per Feye's Trim, continuing with myU/V shaped hemline. I have only trimmed my hair once in 4 years and that was 2 frizzy inches last November 2010.

I will then let it continue to grow, uninterupted.

Hey y'all! I had my bf check to make sure I'm really really at waist or not. He said the tips of my longest strands are, so that's good enough for me! (pictures can sometimes deceive). So here's to finally deliberately reaching waist! I'm tremendously enjoying my journey down the back- this is the longest its ever ever been and it's great! If you think about it, I'm reaching a new milestone everyday haha! This pic is from a couple months ago wen it looked like waist in pictures, but it was actually an inch or so away in person.

I just made it to waist. It actually took about 6 weeks to grow an inch and a half, and that's huge to me, as my hair refuses to grow. I take a daily multi vitamin, hair vitamin, and fish oil capsule. I 've stretched the time between washes from everyday to every 3 days. I CO or CWC instead of SSC. I use monistat and mega-tek on my scalp and do scalp massages. I also recently bought castor oil, sesame oil, and coconut oil, and I just made my first blend of EO's. My hair has never been this happy!

This is my 3rd attempt at waist to tailbone. My ends weren't the best the first 2 times. I have now changed my care routine and little and have gotten rid of damage that happened when I had box color removed in a salon. Getting Aveda color has been the best thing I've done for my hair. It's expensive but very worth it for me.

Another thing that delights me to no end is sitting in the bathtub and watching my ends float  As you can tell it doesn't take much to put me in my happy place.

I'm also excited to say that my hair's been growing at about 1 inch per month, so in a couple months, I should be approaching TB! I think that's partially due to a scalp scrub I've been using. Anyone else practicing benign neglect? I wash/condition every couple or every few days, run a seamless comb through it when it's full of conditioner, air dry. sometimes I braid it or bun or or have it in a "sport" bun. That's pretty much it.

Yea, a thread for me! :) Tailbone is my ultimate goal, but I feel like I've been stalled at waist forever. Of course, it's likely my fault - I used to color my hair, brush vigorously, all the stuff you aren't supposed to do. I'm not trying to be more gentle and wearing my hair up a lot more to protect it.
I figure I've got six or seven inches till tailbone; 28 is a pretty solid waist for me, maybe even a bit longer than that, because I'm really, really short and also short-waisted (sucks for buying pants, awesome for hair goals ha ha). I'm afraid waist might be terminal for me, but I'm doing my best to keep the hope alive - I know what I should do is cut off some of it but I feel like it took *FOREVER* to get here so I'm not ready for that just yet.

I haven't given much thought to the length of my hair lately (I've been focusing on repairing the damage to my ends, to the best of my ability, and experimenting with treatments and subtle color changes) But after taking a picture yesterday, I think my hair has hit waist length, and I want to be in the group. :) I know you can't see my hands very well, but they were resting on my hips, below my waist. Thank you! :) I appreciate the compliment on the shine. One of my goals has always been to have shiny hair. I guess when hair is healthy, it just IS shiny.

I currently have my hair in a cameo bun. I took a pic for the monthly style thread to post tomorrow, and it's shiny in that pic too. However, I think the braid was too thick, and the bun too small. I want the braid so small it's practically an accent braid.

And I've also noticed my nape hairs are curly. I love having curlies! :D

I am. I hardly measure my hair, don't take pictures of it, wash less frequently and about 50% of the time I CO, I'm currently not trimming, hardly brushing, sometimes I put it up.

I'm basically just leaving it alone until possibly January or will trim it if the ends become bad again. This method also helps me to avoid heat styling.

I haven't been neglecting it, but for some reason I tend to be delusional when it comes to my length. I think of it as being maybe waist-length or a bit longer...but when I have it straight and hanging down my back it juuuuuust touches the top of my tail bone. I'm shooting for enough length to hit where my legs meet my torso when I pull it around to the front. lol, maybe it's just because I never look at myself from behind.

Anyone else practicing benign neglect? I wash/condition every couple or every few days, run a seamless comb through it when it's full of conditioner, air dry. sometimes I braid it or bun or or have it in a "sport" bun. That's pretty much it.

Don't have time for much else. Hair doesn't seem to mind it. Sure, I have splits but I get those no matter WHAT I do!

I am. I've been doing this for about a year now at least. CO wash every 3 days, add some leave in and put it up in a single braid cinnabun.

Hi everyone :waving:
I have just reached waist length for the second time.

I cut back from TBl nearly two years ago and I'm very happy to be back here. I'm very excited to see if I can hopefully get past TBL. :)

I'm currently doing benign neglect and loving it :inlove:

I S&C with Head and shoulders 2 in 1 and any coney conditioner
2 x a week. I use a coney conditioner to leave in.

I braid and bun my hair up with bun pins.
I brush with my tangle teezer

I'm amazed by how much time I have saved by doing less with my hair. Funny enough my hair is happier too!:D

So I was going through some all pictures just for the heck of it and found one where my hair was probably close to tbl! It's funny because I didn't think my hair had ever really been longer than bcl. I'm not sure how old it is because it was on my photobucket account, but I think it's from around 2004 possibly. Anyway, I decided to make it my profile pic for inspiration. :)

I have discovered two things within the past couple of days!

Firstly, my hair is long enough to do a Pencil Bun again! Ever since I started self-trimming, my hair has been too short for this style, but now my ends are long enough to keep the bun semi-stable. I have to make it really tight, though, so I think I'm going to need another inch before it has more stability.

Secondly, I can now make a Cinnabun that is actually stable! I could make them before, but they wouldn't hold at all, even with a properly used hairtoy. My remaining layers still stick out in places, but I don't care because it's a cinnabun that actually stays up without spitting everything out!

Plus I'm 2" away from Hip, which means tailbone is only 4" away! I'm so excited to finally be approaching some new length milestones!

Interesting...I have been thinking of trying prenatals for awhile, but wasn't sure if they'd do anything. When I was a teenager my doctor put me on prenatals because I was shedding hair like crazy (I was a vegetarian and not eating right for it), and I don't remember if it really made a difference. However, being a teenager, I might've just chucked them in the trash after a few weeks. What brand do you use?

OK, having measured the other day I am back at 32". I think my occasional Mega-Tek and vitamins are having a positive effect on growth. I can't really tell if I'm at waist or hip or what, but something around that region! "BCL" is my immediate goal which should be about 35"....however, after lurking in all the classic+ threads now I am wondering if that will be enough hair! Damn you LHC!

I feel like growing long hair is somewhat like getting tattoos. Once you start, you become more and more addicted. LOL

I've got the neglect part down, still working on the benign. I've been so busy this past year that I just WO once or twice a week, comb it when dry and throw it up in a bun. My splits and breaks are rampant. I must learn patience when brushing and putting up my hair.

Trying to get to tailbone here. I think it'll take me forever, since my hair grows so slowly. I'm expecting it to take over a year... maybe two years.

But I have a mini-milestone between here and there, which is hip. I think I am about an inch or two from what I consider hip, so I should be there before the end of the year...

I've been stuck at almost-there for quite some time, it's annoying!

I'm only 1,5 inches short of reaching tailbone but I moved to another country for the summer and I the water here is causing my ends to dry out and thus split and break as fast as my hair grows so I'm not getting any progress. Not even though I've been oiling the length and especially the ends in an attempt to save the situation :(

I had layers which I was growing out and although my hair has been tailbone before, it was just a thin long layer that reached there. I am getting close again but kept trimming to get rid of the layers as I thought my hair looked to thin and uneven and was very unhappy.

In town today I saw a girl with beautiful red hair to tailbone with her layers from above her hip line and a smaller but clear layer at tailbone. It looked great! It was thick and healthy too. I didnt mind the layers at all on her. It gave me new inspiration.

So here comes tailbone - no more trimming!! My hair is currently at my jeans waist band (hip).

Well I have learned alot. First I thought I was terminal at tailbone. Second what I thought was tailbone is actually top of the verticle smile. I just don't like the other term for it. So then I readjusted my thinking to being terminal there. Its has been that length for years. It was thin though due to a 4 year bought with major shedding but I still thought the length was terminal.

Well I returned to a deligent regimine in Feb 2011. I noticed some growth. Then thought ok, maybe a half inch or so do to the stopped shedding and return to a good regimine.

Well I am happy to report that I am actually on the grow again. I have now reached the area that should be a clear tailbone claim and slightly beyond. A definate 3-4 inch gain on all layers . I can touch the stool I sit on with my hair. That's tailbone right. Yeah! So Now I am hopeful of reaching my all time goal of a Classic braid. I realize it will be a while and the layers that developed from the staggered shedding are still filling in. But I am happy again. Finally after 11 years since I officially started the quest to long hair I feel like a long hair Lady.

I will stay on this thread until I have more than a few strands touching my stool. My crown and front area is the slow poky's and I want my crown at tailbone before I move on to the great beautiful journey on the Tailbone to Classic thread. YEAH YEAH YEAH. I may never regain my full volume. I am also thinking the shedding actually stopped the growth based on what George Micheals said about the body wanting to be balanced. I hope now that the shedding is done my body will allow greater lengths even though there is a large volume of shorter hair filling in. Hope Hope Hope.

So I realized today that I have no idea what tailbone is on me, just that I want it!
I'm another shortie, so 29 inches is past waist but not hip. And my hair is tapered; the front parts grow slower than the back, so it's hard to tell exactly how long it is. I've been a bit frustrated with this lately, because the ends can look really thin and not pretty at all. :( I started castor oil this week, so I'm hoping that even if it doesn't make my hair grow faster, maybe it'll help with the thickness problem.
Happy growing, everyone! I estimate I have at least 6 inches till tailbone, probably more, so I'll be here at least another year.

I need to join this thread! I'm currently at 32.5" (ish), which is just shy of hip for me. It's funny how my length goals have changed over the years. When I was APL I thought I'd be happy stopping at waist, when I was at BSL I thought I'd be happy with hip...and now that I'm almost to hip it still isn't long enough! I really think I'll stop at TB though - I don't want to be able to sit on it or have it interfere with...other things haha.

I really do need to trim soon - I had 1/2" taken off in March, but my hem is looking too scraggly for my taste. My best friend is getting married in early October, so I think I'll wait until right before to trim an inch or so. I should be back to solid hip by Christmas, and then I think I've got another 3-4 inches to go until TB. Knowing me and my trimming schedule, I bet I'll be there by Christmas next.

Happy growing!

I am going by the TB bone mid bum! My hair stretched already reaches the vertical smile. But it will take much longer for it to be there curly, especially since I'm microtrimming every month! Since I wear braids alot I do get to see my lenght so its satisfying. My hair natural dry would have to be knee length but wet it is currently hanging to alittle below hip. I'm pretty solidly at waist.. lower even as I have a high waist and it reaches my 'lower rise' jeans.. but I'm a curly girl and it eats up a lot of my inches :( when it's wet I am about 3" from tailbone.. when dry and pulled straight more like 5".. so I'm getting there but it's amazing how 'short' I feel after hearing someone say that!

Could it also be that your friend's view of "waist" is like mainstream perception and is more like LHC's hip length? My DH used to think that waist meant wherever my jeans sat on my hips. I had to emphasize that it's the smallest point on my torso and have him hold a string around my waist to see if we're talking about the same point.

I think most people think waist is where hip is. Infact a lot of jeans that youngsters wear have their waistband at bcl.

On me TB is only 3 inches above classic. So I am hoping that will be a shorter journey. This is taking forever. Not really. I hit waist about a year ago and I think I could be here another year.

This could be.. I'm growing out layers so my hair fairytales a bit at the end but even discounting a few inches of ends, my hair is sitting well past waist! but I suppose of she looks at the bulk of my hair its somewhere between BSL and WL.. but that's just where the layers begin.

I had to explain why I am not cutting back to get 'one length' hair and that I will maintain for a few years at classic before deciding if I wanted to grow any more.. then she proceeded to tell me my hair probably wouldn't grow that long and bla bla bla but she's looking at my hair after not really progressing much for about a year because I maintained at WL to cut out some bleach damage from past highlights.

I'm feeling a little discouraged today :( I was so excited to realize that my hair, when wet, reaches my hip! I was feeling extra happy until I was talking to my friend about it and she said "your hair isn't really even waist length, it can't be reaching your hip!"

How recent is your signature photo? Judging by your signature, it looks like your hair is just barely touching your waist... and it looks like you are looking up slightly, which would give the picture the appearance of extra length that wouldn't be there if you were just looking forward.

Of course, in your sig your hair isn't straight, which eats up some length, so I could see it being solidly at waist or between waist and hip when straight, even given what I've said above. But your friend was probably talking about your hair as she sees it, and if that's the case and that photo is recent, I'd agree with your friend.

Now, if that photo is old, please disregard everything I just said.

In any case, don't let that discourage you. Just keep growing your hair. For some of us (myself included), it takes longer to reach our goals. My mini-goal is hip, and if I grew at the average rate I'd be there already or in another month or less, because I am rather close. But I'm not there yet and I suspect it'll take me at least another 2 months, if not more. Tailbone might take me a year or two! :O

Don't be discouraged. When wet my hair is actually past hip, but fully curly (just after a wash) it's at least 6" from hip. I take my progress pics just before washing, when the curl is most relaxed, because I get the most accurate idea of length then, but it's still a lot shorter than wet or stretched. I don't like it, but I have to live with it. : /

How recent is your signature photo?
It was taken in 2009 I believe... and no :) I was looking straight ahead

Edit: my photo album says it was taken October 2009.

after a wash my length can be taken up as much as BSL length if my curls are extra happy.. so my ultimate goal is classic length curly which should put me somewhere between thigh and knee!

Welp I've officially reached belly-button length!:cheese:

It really helps to leave it in a braid for a few months without measuring.

I lovve seeing all the long hair photos. I of course forgot to put in a picture when I registered, so everyone will see my hair eventually. I'm a little past waist. I have a shorter orso and longer legs, so getting to tailbone shouldn't be too hard. But anything past that will probably take forever.
I noticed in the last few months that my hair is getting harder to brush or comb. Recently I gave up the brush because I was afraid of riping all my hair out. Is it normal for hair to get more difficult to manage? I usually keep it braided or in a bun. So I don't know why it gets so tangly. It is about where I can no longer comb in one motion. I have to stop and then pick up my hair to continue. Is anyone else suddenly getting much harder to manage hair? I am somewhat past waist. My hair sits where the top of my jeans reach.

I certainly cannot speak for everyone here but.. when my hair gets really difficult to comb that usually means I am in need of a trim and it's nearly always from split ends twisting about. I usually pull all of my hair over my shoulder and comb through the ends and work my way up and then I switch sides.

I've recently started using a tangle teaser and that's helped quite a bit but it does give me some frizz, but I prefer it to combing my dry hair.

It took forever to get to waist. I hope it doesn't three years to get to my tailbone.

I have real short hairs at the nape of my neck. They just don't grow very fast compared to the rest of my hair. If I wear a necklace it rubs against the short hair and matts it. I have to comb my hair often. I tried wearing a braid all day but the short hair still matts up. Very annoying.

I've been growing for 20 years from shoulder and reached my tailbone sometime in the past couple of years! (I've got it tied back and there's about 2" sitting on the chair behind me right now!)

Think it's taken about 6 years to get from waist? Not sure, but would have to look through old photos to double check. Know it's taken 10 years to get from around shoulder-blade area, although I used to have it trimmed regularly!
