Oooh so pretty hair! Thank you for sharing. And the sweater is great too! (When I take a length pic next time, I will be wearing two sweaters I think, thatīs how cold it is in my apartment...) Congrats on anniversary and HL! :cheer:
Haha lets start a thick-sweater length check trend brrr! Thanks!

Ooh, Ylva, your waves look amazing! And congrats on HL, ArtofNoot, your hair is looking so pretty & truly long!

 I hope to join the HL crew by my check-in the week of the winter solstice, the urge to check early is strong this time!

Thank you!

That's very exciting with a new milestone coming up soon!

Your hair look gorgeous! I can understand your hair looks shorter because of the shrinkage but in my book your hair is still considered long. I know LHC always says HL is still rather short. But I have always said as far as the lengths of the charts WL hair on down is consider to be long.

Thank you so much, Dark! I am just enjoying shorter hair for the time being. It was so much of a hassle with bleach-damaged hair at almost knee. :)

You know, HL, Ylvaīs hair and whatever other length people in this thread have is not short. Donīt sell your hair short, so to speak. Donīt give it that negative *short* description, because it isnīt short or any less valuable. Itīs actually freaking long in real world and super pretty - yes, all of you, all of us, have gorgeous hair and most people out there will never attain what we have. So letīs not be falsely modest or self-depreciating.

I came here to say that I have reached BCL. Looked yesterday when my hair was all straight and brushed after a wash. But since my ends are so sparse and thin down there due to natural taper, I will wait a month or possibly even two to take and post a length picture.

I'll be at tbl in a few weeks, but I dont know if I want to grow it longer. Lately I'm also learning how to style it straight, I find I like it more that way at the moment.

Very well said! I feel quite relaxed about any description of my hair, I guess because I’ve had it objectively “long” (almost knee) and then decided to cut, so for me, it’s a “been there, done that” kind of thing in a sense. For me, it’s been a welcome exercise to let go of the length and defining my or my hair’s worth through that.

Congratulations on reaching BCL!

Well, I couldnīt wait to take that BCL picture, could I? Here it is:

https://i.ibb.co/D7GzSJz/BCL.jpg

The bottom line of my winter hoodie helpfully marks where classic length is on me. Not much to go. Iīve gone without trims this entire year (since January 3rd anyway) and although Iīm glad I raced and acquired the length, I am not quite happy about my ends. I have a different plan for the next year - taking 1 cm off every three months. I should reach TBL some time after Easter, and CL possibly by next Christmas. But I consider my hair pretty long now (long enough for me, even with LHCitis bug in my brain), so I am going to focus more on thickening of my hemline, if itīs possible at all (with my thin and superfine hair). It does not matter to me anymore if I settle for reaching and maintaining at TBL, CL or FTL maximum - as long as I have reasonably thick and healthy ends.

Such beautiful long hair! I love the color! Auburn FTW :joy:

I totally relate to the LLHCitis. I feel like my hair is medium length at best and then non-LHCers say my hair is long and I'm like "Oh yeah! My perception of hair length is totally warped" haha

I just manipulate it while drying with the hairdryer. Indeed, I'm contemplating learning how to do it properly, now that I'm mot activelly growing my hair anymore. I fear heat damage tho.

I think there was at least one discussion as to what people consider BCL and TBL. For some, itīs interchangeable. Some donīt like to call BCL at all and consider that point to be TBL. Some actually go *deeper* and call the true TBL at the end of the spine. Itīs up to you really. Happy growing !

I remembered that thread (https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=64668) and went back to reread it and I think it only led to more questions! Back in 2014 and 2019 there were all different opinions on where exactly BCL and TBL are.

Now that we're nearly in 2024, does anyone feel up for reviving the conversation to see if it's changed? :) I have always understood BCL to be the top of your bum crack, and TBL to be the bottom of your tailbone. For me, TBL is about an inch lower than BCL. However, I do like the point that someone made in the discussion thread in which we don't call hip length at the bottom of the hips and we don't call calf length at the bottom of the calves, so why do many people consider TBL to be at the bottom of the tailbone? If calling TBL at the top of the tailbone was the standard, I think I could do away with BCL completely which is definitely tempting.

My hair has definitely warm glint to it (which the picture does not show because sun never shines in this room, lol). I have a strange coloring - my face tends to prefer only cool complimentary tones (I looked horrible in orange/red eye shadow or blush), but my hair has always been warm-tinted and somehow it works.

I donīt think this can be decided once and for all unequivocally. I tend to lean towards BCL and TBL separation, TBL is about 2 inches lower than BCL on me. To me itīs an opportunity for better measurements with more definable milestones. If I merged them into one, Iīd face a butt abyss

I keep forgetting to check this thread (since it's kind of separate from the "mane" forum). I am soooooo close to waist length with the longest hairs in back but not quite there yet. Perhaps in a month or two, I can change my length designation from "MBL" to "WL" (though it's tempting to round up)!

One thing though--the hair hanging down the front side of my shoulders is never as long as the hair in back, though I'm guessing that's because the center point of hair growth is more towards the back of the head.

And I checked out a few of the recent photos in this thread...

Nefcerka--great length and thick almost all the way to the ends! And that auburn color is quite rich.
Ylva--nice hair as always! I saw your comment about anything longer than waist length is long (again, getting close here!), though overall the LHC might think hair isn't long until past hip length. For awhile, I've been feeling like long is always a couple inches longer than what I had at the time, and I'm sure that feeling will continue, and that's probably been felt by many others too.

The point where the tailbone pokes out is a clear one, so I use that one for myself. If someone doesn’t agree with your marker’s location, I’m guessing they’re at least not going to go look for anything else. :)

Since almost all the bleach is now gone, I think I might be ready to grow longer again. I am thinking down to classic for now - that’s about two years away from where I currently am, with minimal trims. At least right now I feel like I miss my longer hair, but that might have something to do with having seen several very nice heads at around classic recently.

I don’t want to lock myself into any length, this one included, but I fear that if I grow longer, I won’t want to cut it anymore because it will be so healthy in comparison to my bleached hair, and I will again become a kind of a prisoner of my length…

I laughed at butt abyss. We just go from one abyss to another, don't we :)

I think as a length BCL is very self-explanatory and clear, that's why it's useful even though it's a bit ...awkward to talk about. TBL has been a bit more difficult to place, I used to think that it's about halfway down your BC because that's what some people here have said, but actually when I went feeling for the thing I realised that on my body the bone is pretty much right at BCL, so on me they would be technically the same. However, if I make it there some day I think I'm gonna call TBL an inch or two below BCL anyway for a midway point to look forward to and not go into butt abyss

I have a rapid loss of thickness due to mechanical damage, and I don't have much thickness to begin with :') The breakage is also very lopsided, the right side is significantly sparser and shorter (like HL vs BSL, it's real). Even if I can't grow much longer, I would like to fix that issue. But I've been aware of it for 3 years already and it hasn't improved much, sigh

Donīt worry, you and I will get there (to classic), I am positive. I have experienced some unusual shedding this year, so I am not very happy about my volume either, but what can I do. I keep reminding myself that thin&long hair is always better than thin&short hair. I havenīt done any trims this year but that is going to change - the plan, so far, is to take off 2 cm every 4 months, starting January 1st. So I will be growing towards TBL and classic, but slower next year.

That side-by-side with another person is such a cool idea! Regarding the breakage, do you have any idea what might be causing it? Do you bring your hair over to a specific side when brushing, do you wear a bag strap on the side experiencing breakage...?

Yeah, I have done both of those. I tend to work my hair over my left shoulder because I'm right-handed. I think the main culprit has been a side braid. I've come to the conclusion that for my hair braids are not very protective (although better than nothing), and always wearing it to one side gave me a diagonal hemline. I've tried to wear it on the other side but it just feels soooo unnatural :p

Actually yesterday I sewed a satin tube and stuffed my braid in there for the night. It worked like a charm! Silky tangle-free hair and moisturized ends! (I made this to protect the tassel and the length at night, this likely won't solve my diagonal breakage issue since I think it breaks higher). I'll share pics in some thread when I get to it

Thanks! For now, I plan to maintain to remove bleached areas at the bottom (they are toned and match my natural highlights very well, I hope as it grows out I will get a sort of natural ombre from the sun that resembles what I have now). I love seeing this hair color on others but I still often think about getting highlights. I’d like to see through my BIG goal of virgin hair at HL first though. Do you enhance your color? It looks so bright and golden in most of your pictures!

I have a bit of accidental henna all over, naturally I have almost no warmth in my shade. I'm gonna grow it back but it'll take time :p miss my cool tone.

There will be a nice natural ombre if you give it some sun! Of course there will be some uv damage as a side effect to that.

I found my identical hair twin today, on Instagram, her name is @potauvert. Her hair - length (around TBL), color, texture, thickness, is so precisely the same as mine, that it is actually freaky, spooky and infinitely odd - like looking at pictures of myself that arenīt me. Seriously, her whole page including buns and braids could have been me.
I wonder if she is a member of LHC? Would anyone recognize her? Thatīs a long shot I suppose.
I never thought (and Iīm not thinking about it either) that me and my 3 hairs could have a successful insta hair page, but she is doing very well and her page is very lovely.

I'm actually really terrible at products... this is just a little leave-in and a light coney serum. I would probably get much better results with a curl cream of some sort! Maybe I should poke around in the products threads and see what people like.

I will wait and see about trimming/not-trimming... it really depends on how things go / how busy I am / how the shape grows in!

If a little leave-in and serum works, might as well stick with it! I am curious what other fine wavies do, cause I tend to use heavier curl creams than I need and brush out my waves anyways. I have been using shea moisture KIDS curl cream for a few years, but recently started rotating with not your mothers curl cream which seems a little lighter and gives me good definition with a water mist refresh. :beercheer:

Rant incoming

Before I started taking proper care of my hair five years ago (conditioning, protective hairstyles, no dyes), I used to get so much taper and of course split and broken ends pretty much at APL and even though I was always mostly around WL, my hair looked super thin, see-through. I also used to not trim for 3-4 years, just let it grow until I reached a point where I suddenly absolutely had to get rid of those pathetic ends and I chopped to a bob. And grew, and chopped, and all on repeat.

Thing is, even though I have been taking great care of my hair since the last pixie 5 years ago, my hair is still thin, because thatīs my genetics. The only difference is that I have zero split ends and my length is smooth and shiny, but still thin. And the noticeable taper does not start at APL but at about WL now. And I have reached that intense urge to chop those thinnest ends now, like I used to in the past. It does not help that they are bunned and out of sight, because I know they are there.

I am holding on - waiting this out - till I reach TBL at Easter, 3 months away. Iīm not even trimming till then as I had planned, because I donīt trust myself with scissors right now. It feels important to reach that milestone at least once in my life, because I know I will probably never go longer again. There is no point for me. I wanted to know where my terminal is, and based on calculating my taper I can safely say itīs at classic or FTL at most. And there is absolutely no point going there with 10 hairs down there. Those thin ends will also make no difference in the size of my buns and I canīt stand to see them in my thin braids.

I know some people like how fairy-like hair like mine looks. But I donīt, on myself. Itīs the standard case of "grass is greener" - I would swap for a very thick or curly hair, knowing very well that those textures have their own problems to deal with.

To get to the point of this rant, which is inconsequential anyway - when I reach TBL, I am going to hack off 5-10 centimeters, maybe as high as WL at some point, and I wonīt pay attention to milestones any more, but rather to being happy with my length, thickness, and hair manageability.

sarana
December 28th, 2023, 05:55 AM
I understand the frustration and the intense urge to trim. Even though we try to follow all the haircare advice, the improvements in length and thickness are neglible.

I've been toying with the idea of shoulder-length hair, it was super cute on me in high school. But I won't yet go there for a couple of years at least. I, too, want to reach my goal length at least once before I decide what to do. (I kinda wish I could have kids in a few years, and as a final straw I want to see if the famous pregnancy hormones push me to a new record.)

Do wait until spring, but if your hair still makes you unhappy then, it's ok to make changes. No need to ruin your mental well-being over hair.

A while ago I was talking about having one-sided breakage. I thought I'd share this pic to show how dire the situation actually is. It would take at least 2 years for the right side to catch up with the rest, if I managed to get to the root cause of the breakage and stop it. I'm pretty sure that wearing a side braid over my left shoulder has been a big culprit, because as you can see the broken part is almost exactly 1/3 of my hair, like it would be divided into braid sections.

I've tried to wear a side braid over my right shoulder for balance, but because of cowlicks and stuff, my hair just doesn't want to flow that way nicely. So I've tried to minimize braid wearing altogether and do stick buns instead, but sometimes I just want to wear a braid. It feels and looks nice! I wonder if bunning can cause damage too, like if I always twist the hair a certain way? Maybe I should learn some more different buns. Mostly I wear a nautilus, sometimes LWB.

The unevenness doesn't always look this severe if I brush and style etc, but it's there underneath. Well, I'll deal with this, just wanted to rant and give a warning example :p

The right side of my hair is APL while the rest is HL *facepalm*

Oh, I've also thought about starting to do the braid straight down my back, but it's more difficult to do (just lack of practise I guess). But I've been liking side braids, because then you can see my hair in the front. Looking at this pic though, I think I have to stop.

Oh wow, sarana, that is pretty wild! I can't say I've seen breakage in that pattern. I hope it's just the side braid, like you suspect, and not something more complicated.

When it comes to straight down the back english braids, (as you probably already know), it's really only the first few iterations that you have to do behind your head. Then you can pull the braid over one shoulder to complete it, but it will still hang down straight when you're done. I'm sure you could get the hang of it!

sarana!! I went through my old photos and found, as I thought to remember, that I had breakage in a similar pattern way back. This picture (https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=33288&d=1536614436) is from 2018. My hair had severe bleach damage back then, so I wouldn't know what the exact cause of the breakage was. Just thought it interesting.

Sarana, I recall you mentioning this happen but I couldn’t really tell from the other photos. I do read to vary our styles to minimize stressing the strands in the same way every day, so it could be your preferred side braid I guess :shrug:What are your detangling practices, is there some mechanical damage happening there as well?

I find the areas I have trouble maintaining length and get a lot of breakage is from brushing. I used to brush my hair over one shoulder then the other, and lots of damage from the hair that grows behind my ears. I now section my hair into 2-4 sections and finger detangle first then brush. I still have damage there, but since I have been more or less maintaining my length I see it getting better slowly since changing my habits.

I find 2 medium claw clips and loosely twisted cinnabun to be an easy and gentle go-to bun that doesn’t cause damage. I have flexi’s but this is often my look, I wear it at my nape and as a top bun and everywhere in between to alternate any tension.

I believe you can grow out that section! :knit:

Welcome here eresh, and your hair is beautiful. I know you have a health issue, but it really looks beautiful and full to me.

Sarana, I am sorry this is happening to your right side. Two things come to mind, apart from what was already said - first, do you , by any chance, prefer to sleep on the right side? I have seen this happening on people who prefer one side to sleep on - the constant rubbing could also cause this.
Second - apart from the hairstyle causing it, maybe you have a different thickness on your left/right side? I too notice that I have slightly thicker growth on my left side and thinner on the right side of my head (and I donīt know of any cause).
I am dealing with as fine hair as yours. Yes, I constantly worry about breakage. I donīt do tight buns and even with those I consider non-harmful I always worry about wrapping too tight (and if I donīt wrap tight enough, they fall out...). If I wear a braid, itīs straight down my back (I actually like that it no longer flips to the front, itīs long enough to stay put) and only when my length is oiled, to prevent friction on clothes.
I mostly wear buns and I use a different tool every day: claw clip, hair stick, hair fork, scrunchie. I change placements: low, middle, top of the head. And I rotate this many buns (I have a list written down so I donīt forget): center held braided bun, chameleon, nautilus and double wrapped nautilus, gibraltar, inverted log roll, log roll, LWB, Miladyīs bun, Neoma knot, pretzel bun, scrunchie bun, spock bun, swirly bun and tatsilus bun.
And coronet braid is a good option, if youīd like it!

Sometimes it feels like my hair is shrinking instead of growing (especially when I take it out of the bun every evening, because the ends are curled up).
So I took a measurement today, and that feeling is quite unfounded. I stopped measuring last September, because it started to feel obsessive.
Based on todayīs measurement, I realized my hair is not only growing (a shocker, I know), but at a quite astonishing (for me) rate too, of approximately 2 cm a month. I had really thought I had lost all my racers during the excessive autumnal shed (which has finally stopped, thanks the all long-haired gods), but no, all is well :cheese:
I plan on calling TBL (or mid-bottom) when I reach 100 cm (measured from hairline) in a few months, by summer.

Welcome, Eresh! That dragonfly flexi is so beautiful, as is your hair :o Without knowing exactly where TBL is on you, I'd say it definitely looks between TBL and Classic at a glance.

Congrats on the growth, Nefcerka! We're very close in length so seeing you hit your goals is inspiring :crush:

I took a month or two of growth off due to a much needed trim, so I'm back to the 35" I initially measured from the top of the hairline. One of the biggest perks of measuring very infrequently is not knowing how far you actually got before a trim. Doesn't feel like I lost anything, just stalled haha.

Speaking of measuring, I think most people on LHC measure from the top of the hairline and down the back, right? I think I remember seeing a thread about measuring using this method, but I've seen longhairs in other online circles measure from the middle of the part and down the side which makes the measurement significantly shorter.

Nefcerka

Thank you Für immer and Kelp kindly :)

I think measuring from hairline is more precise. Yes, I see a lot of people on IG measure from the top/back of the head, which is perhaps more accurate (in terms of actual hair length), but how can one find the same exact spot every time? Iīll stick to the hairline.

I'm swearing an oath of "Do Not Look At Your Hair" today. Maybe I can look at it just a little, but I'm challenging myself to not check the length until the first day of Spring. I'm not an obsessive measurer, but I do find myself looking at my hemline in the mirror whenever I pass by and wondering "Is it there yet? Is it there yet?" If my hair grows the average amount, which I'm fairly sure it does, it should be BCL by the equinox and what a fun little treat that would be!

Hi everyone! I'm not really new, I used to go by Joliebaby. But I got a new computer and after that I could not get in here, I apparently forgot my password and I tried all my e-mail addresses to get a password reset, but none were accepted! It just said that this address is not found in our system or something along those lines. I contacted the admins twice and explained the problem, but got no reply. So now I decided to just make a new account. Which is a bit sad since I had been a member since - drumroll - 2003! Yup, over 20 years :D And now I have to start over :P

Anyway, as I was away I did not measure my hair, but did so yesterday. Quite quickly, so it is probably not accurate to a millimetre, but I got 34,5" !!!! Like 88 cm. It's probably hip on me, just by feeling with my hand the hipbone and hair ends. But of course it doesn't look like quite hip length yet. The waves take up length. But it does look past waist, finally!!! For the longest time it was technically waist, but it didn't really look like it to me. Now it goes well past my belt when I wear high waisted jeans or a belted dress. I need to take a picture...

If I remember correctly it was something like 31" before my computer issues.. I need to find the Joliebaby posts. And I had an about 1" trim of the wispiest ends there at some point. Anyway it's growing.

I just did a split-end S&D. Had some at the sides and top layer, which of course get the most friction when sleeping, and wearing the sides clipped back. I haven't done those small side braids anymore much, I did do it once but used a soft band instead of the tiny silicone bands, which wrecked havoc on the ends when I wore those a lot. I really like the small sides braids and the soft, thicker bands don't look as nice as the tiny ones, but I'm not willing to get that damage again.

I'm quite happy with the length, so I'm not obsessively checking and wishing it to grow faster, so this is a good place to be! My goal, if I even have one, is probably Classic length at most, and I'm not sure I will keep it that long, but I want to experience it at least once.

I always wanted to have really long hair when I'm old, and natural color too, which will probably be almost white like my grandma had. I only have a few gray hairs so far though. So I definitely will not be chopping my hair off anymore, as it does take years to grow back.

Anyway, I will be around here for quite a while.

Hehe, thanks! I didn't even know LHC is on social media..

Anyway - I found my old posts and my hair was not 31" but 33.5" last summer before the trim. I don't remember if I trimmed one or two inches. And now my hair is like 34" or 34,5". So it hasn't grown that much, but maybe it seems like more since it definitely is at the top of my hipbone now, so a new milestone is finally reached for the first time (since childhood when I had long hair)!!!
The longest I had before this was waist or can-i-call-this-waist - I don't remember exactly anymore. I think it may have been only 31" or so the last time I grew out my hair.

Why did I cut it off then? Extremely traumatic and difficult life situation.. But I have since decided that cutting off my hair is not helpful.

But I'm super happy to have hair that is officially very long in my book, and I feel relaxed about letting it grow longer, not obsessive, just interested as every new inch is longer than ever before and a new experience.
I will have to start practicing new ways of putting my hair up too. I've worn it down quite a bit recently and I like to wear it down. It is still not too difficult. I think half-ups of sort could be a next step where I can still wear my hair down my back, but it won't get mixed up in stuff at the front. I am now knitting my hair with yarn into a project I'm working on and things like that.

Orchid, I wrote a long & oh-so-eloquent response agreeing that you’re nowhere near terminal and that there are a million reasons for the ebbs and flows of growth but it got eaten by the internet so we get the short version this time!

Your hair is looking great and honestly, I find hair hard to measure consistently so I just ….dont do it really, maybe once a year or if I reach a major milestone.

Keep it up! Worrying about it never helps & as an aside - your hair always looks so incredibly soft and full. :flower:

Your hair looks so healthy and thick, floridaorchid! Maybe you measured it wrong, this time or the last time around? And even if it's not wrong, 3 inches in this amount of time is totally normal, I don't think you're aproaching terminal any way soon :D.

Recently according to my measurements from June to December I grew a little under 3 inches. January I got over an inch. April and May of last year I had an inch per month. I'll have to keep measuring for a couple years to see if this is the case, but I'm wondering if it's seasonal. Other stuff like stress, changes in diet, etc. will effect your hair growth--hair and nails are the first to suffer when we have health fluctuations because they're fast growing (compared to the rest of the body).

I am back on my cyclical journey through this thread - I've probably been HL-TBL most of time I've been on LHC. My hair seems to like being a couple of inches past HL right now, and starts to make a fuss when approaching TBL. A couple of months ago I cut it back from almost-TBL to just-past-HL again. I like it a lot at this length and it's getting even better - I guess I'm a now a maintainer... :D

I think I'm about eight months away, but my hair seems to have had a really slow winter so we'll see how that affects it. I also came here to say that whenever I shake my head or swish my hair, I'll feel my ends brush my bum due to the slight head tilt. This is yet another rant about my hair, but there wonīt be any more coming anytime soon (I hope) because Iīve made up my mind and I am happy with my decision.

On May 2nd 2019 I had my hair cut into a very short pixie (2 cm on the top, shaved in the back) and started fresh on my journey. It will soon be a 5th anniversary of growing out my hair.

Based on my calculations, my hair grows a solid 2 cm a month on average, which is pretty fast – for me, anyway. If I hadnīt done the trims to get through awkward pixie stages and regular 4 cm yearly trims, I couldīve been past classic, nearing FTL by now. Not bad growth at all.

I could call TBL on my anniversary, Iīm 2 cm away. Took the picture last week. I could even be at classic easily by the end of the year. But I am not going to make it.

https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=49816&d=1711193271
I had an app. 4 cm trim between the two pictures and it made zero difference. My ends are not damaged, they just grow thin.

For some reason I cannot stand hair this long on myself. It started to bother me in terms of management, handling and its appearance somewhere between hip and BCL. I just donīt like how it feels.

Thing is, ever since that fresh start five years ago, I strived to take the best possible and achievable care for my hair, within my means and time abilities. But itīs pretty clear, that although my hair grows fast, the majority of my hair strands have a lifespan of 3 years. Only about 25 % of my hair seems to make it past WL.

I am not ruling out the possibility of growing longer than this in the future at all. But for the moment I am going to search for my happy place, length-wise, which is currently shorter than TBL. Iīll start with a small cut, see how that feels, wait a few weeks and then decide on another one – or not.

Wow, Nefcerka--that is fast growth, both in the past 3 months and 5 years! Your hair growth is faster than mine on both counts (I've been growing my hair for a little over 4 years, and I've had no trims and am only to waist length with the very longest hairs). I wonder if variability in terminal length is effectively another variable--some people appear to have a greater range in strand lifespan than others (but why?). And is the terminal length variability kind of randomly timed--or is it like bamboo in the giant panda habitat where it's more in synch--and hence that causes separate big problems in the habitat (doesn't appear to be the case with you, but could there be others that have sudden shedding of hair for inherent-timing reasons vs. something external like stress or illness).

The part that I bolded is quite literally exactly how I felt last year when my hair got to ~TBL! I really enjoyed getting to hip, but past that somehow it became a massive hindrance and I felt like it overwhelmed my frame somewhat. I got so sick of it and chopped back up to slightly above BSL :o No regrets! You've made it amazingly long in just under 5 years with trims! I hope that whatever you decide to do length wise makes you happier with your hair! Definitely a smart decision to take off a little at a time rather than whacking off multiple milestones at once (not that I'd take my own advice on that of course).

One canīt have everything, I suppose. My hair does grow very fast, in my opinion anyway, but it does not live for that long. Generally speaking, hair lifespan is most usually anywhere between 2 - 6 years. Well, in that marker I am on the lower spectrum.

I remember that my hair appears to grow even faster at shorter lengths (probably because itīs more visible there). When I had a chin bob haircut, it would grow so fast that in a month and a half (!) I would have a really long bob and my hairdresser (friend) said she never saw anyone needing an upkeep so often, with such fast growth.

Hehe thank you! The vibes are well received :heartbeat

I understand how you feel. And it makes little sense, because the difference between hip and BCL is not big at all, right? Iīm glad you found your happy place.

I never had hair this long before. And one would expect that a person gets used to the length, since hair grows slowly and changes are far from sudden. Well, I need to go back a little. Iīm thinking 15 cm off, for now. Because it will grow 5-6 cm back until my next trim in July anyway (Iīve decided to maintain some length with trims every 3 months).

Definitely a smart decision to take off a little at a time rather than whacking off multiple milestones at once (not that I'd take my own advice on that of course).

I feel quite the same around TBL. I feel I cant stand it or I want to trim, in some way around that length something clicks in my mind.

Posting in celebration of reaching 30 inches. :heartbeat::blossom::pegasus:

This is the first time I've ever tracked growth with measuring. I've gotten exactly two inches of length since I measured in mid-October. I'm hoping it's just a slow period and not my normal growth rate, but at least it's growing! Happy to finally see progress because I got too measure-happy and it was very much a watched pot situation, hahaha.

I cut my hair (by myself, cut on washed&dried hair) last week, as I had planned. I didnīt take a measuring tape to the bathroom, I went by feel. And landed at waist length.

My first thought was: Yes, yes, yes, I love it!

My second thought, when I took my hair down from the bun in the evening was: Holymoly, itīs so SHORT! But good short!

It honestly feels awesome. My braid is full to the very end. My hair has is lighter, bouncier and looks healthier. I can still do most of my favorite buns, no problem. I could even wear my hair down if I wanted to (maybe I will, on occasion). I am extremely happy.

I plan to do trims every three months now. I have not decided whether I am going to maintain at WL or let it grow towards hip. At the moment I love this length too much, but if I ever get bored, I can just stop trimming and be at hip again in 6 - 9 months.

Hi all! I am pleased to finally be joining you here! :beerchug:

I know it seems strange because hip is my goal length and my longest layer is there already (I am very short-waisted), but this is the longest I've ever had my hair and I am struggling with all the breakage. I need TLHC to keep me from cutting it to BSL! I post updates every two months to keep me accountable.

I have many layers and a moderate amount of breakage, so I will stay in this thread until I get my U-shaped hemline back and also until most layers are solidly at hip.

Looks good. I don't plan on this anytime soon, but I've certainly thought of how weird it would feel to suddenly have shorter hair, even if it were to be something like MBL. Of course, like with you, I would (if I were to choose) have that straight hemline for the first time with long hair versus more of the V-shape that I have now.

I think I'm officially there--waist length. I pulled my sweatpants up to what I best perceive as my waist (not particularly flattering worn that way) to see if any hairs (hopefully more flattering!) actually reach that point. There's even a ripple in one of the "clumps" of hair, so perhaps if I combed it right to straighten it out, it would be even a bit longer. It does seem like my hair is growing a little more slowly now though, but I most certainly hope I can reach hip length eventually for my next "hair diploma"!

Congrats on 30” jenniferrae - that was my first LHC goal length, just arbitrarily felt like a ‘long hair length’. Turns out for me, it right between WL and HL, and just brushes my elbows and looks fantastic! I hope it’s just as wonderful for you

Nefcerka, you did a beautifully job on the trim! Much more perfect than I ever manage  That length looks beautiful, glad to hear you are happy with it. :flower:

Secret soup, your hair got very long! Congrats, it definitely looks HL to me already, even if you’d rather more of the layers join the longest strands.

Welcome to the thread, Brandt. That certainly looks WL, congrats!

I am so content with my length at hip, that I stopped taking monthly photos. I plan to do a maintenance trim of 1” in a few weeks. This should out me at just about 1/2” above HL. I’ll take a photo then to check how even my trim goes. The length is not getting in the way at ALL so I may start to grow beyond HL, and cut back to it every 4 months rather than cutting back to 30”. I am a little curious when it may start to bother me as others have been discussing, but I am on a hair health journey for now rather than one of continuous length gaining. The bug is real though, as now I seem to plan to grow to BCL and cut back to HL. Whereas before it was grow to HL & cut back to WL

Hope you don't mind me asking.. I remember that you wrote somewhere that you always wear your hair down.
And you have fine hair that is usually more prone to damage. I was thinking that some updos or braids could help you retain length and thickness.
And I actually wonder - how do you manage?:D.I cannot wear my hair down , it's getting everywhere and falling on my face and just irritating...:p

Thanks, Paulownia! I actually talked about this with my girlfriend last night, and she finally offered to braid my hair. We're both pretty busy, so not sure yet when that will happen (we're both "master procrastinators")--but that would be good since I've never braided hair before, and I might want to see the example someone else sets for me before I try it myself.

Wind is definitely an anathema to my hair, and that little bend in the hair above the waist was actually a leftover tangle from some wind the day before during a short hike I took. Fortunately, most of the time it's not very windy here.

And thanks for the comments too from Nefcerka, Rosenester and Lithostoic.

Nefcerka, your growth rate is astounding, and your new cut looks very nice and fresh.

I relate with all of you who said that your hair became difficult to maintain and iffy after around HL, I feel that way too. But I won't cut/trim yet.

I haven't had anything very eventful happen with my hair over the last months, it hasn't grown much.

I do think however that around 3 hairs have reached BCL xD

I keep seeing or looking up HL/TBL hair and I think: what an awesome and gorgeous length, why did I cut it off? it will take time to get it back - but then I realize that all pictures Iīm looking at are of much thicker hair (even if straight like mine) and that my hemline will never be that full at greater lengths. And then the regret is gone.

For me personally there is no point in having length if there are only a few lonely strands down there. I donīt find it pretty on me. And I was likely very close to terminal, because the circumference of my ends at near mid-bottom length (TBL) was that of an usb cable - a comparison I read somewhere on the forum - and it wouldnīt be growing/reaching much further anyway.

Hi everyone! I've just reached waist (I call when wet, my dry waves are a tad bit behind) so I will join here! My original goal was waist, but as I got closer I've decided that some extra length would be great....
I'm nurturing some damaged ends which have been bleached within an inch of their lives. I did various peekaboo colours for YEARS. I haven't bleached in a year and a half, but that leftover bleached hair is pretty dry. I'm also growing out an undercut which has just about reached APL I think!

Here's the photo I took today of my hair dry, on brushed out waves

Hi everyone 👋 I’m at waist with my longest layers, so I graduated from the midback to waist thread. I’m so annoyed at the amount of layers that I got still, it really thinned out the ends. I got layers last year around April and the lady who did it used a razor at the sides of my hair, and added a LOT of layers. Iīve decided to grow my hair back, to SDL (sit-down length, a term I heard from Kelp), which is like TBL but brushes the surface when sitting straight.

I just like TBL as the most aesthetically pleasing length, and it feels like the most hippie length to me (in a good, care-free way).

Am I currently beating myself over my cut to WL last month? Yes... But it taught me one thing (to remember) - I like my stringy ends because I keep them healthy and I donīt care any more what they look like because I am not showing them to anyone and most importantly, I like how that length (TBL) feels.

With shorter, WL length I was also forced to simplify my buns - and realized I donīt need that many. Scrunchie bun for running/outdoors, Spock on the top of the head for its weightlessness, Miladyīs bun for its good looks and wearing french/dutch braid without remorse because other buns tend to hurt my scalp. I also simplified my washing routine.

Only a year (and some) of waiting now, to get back to where I was before I set myself back...

Actually I think SDL is my true goal as well :D There's something visually pleasing about the idea of sitting down and having your hair cover the entire length of your back. I really enjoy the feeling of my hair brushing against my lower back when I tilt my head. Well, it's probably still gonna be like 2 years to SDL/CL even with no stalls and trims.

Speaking of which, I find the timescales we're talking about on this forum absolutely fascinating. It's completely normal to throw around comments like "4 years to go", "been growing for 10 years". Talk about persistence and commitment.

I hope you don't beat yourself up too much for cutting, Nefcerka, you were feeling bothered by your ends for a long time so your mind probably needed it at this point in time. Try to enjoy your fresh even ends while you grow your hair back!

I also can even now see that I will really like "SDL" or tailbone length on me. I may grow to classic just to see what it is like, but it may be a tad too long. I'm at hip length now and it's not long enough :D I love that it's longer than ever before in my adult life, that I have been able to just let it be and grow and not mess with it. I think I was around shoulder length three years ago. I should find some pictures for comparison. I have about 20 cm (or 8") to go to SDL - probably about two years if I want to have a few tiny trims. I'm not in a hurry anymore as hip length is quite long already. I'm noticing splits and breakage at the sides, so I will try to pamper my hair and do S&D's and only very small trims to even up the wispiest ends.

I got my hair cut again, the ends were looking really scraggly and bad! I enjoyed having a layered cut but it's not a good longterm decision for me.

Very happy with the outcome, I got a blunt haircut in the back and had to sacrifice some length to get it even and straight again, but it feels brand new! I'll grow it back for sure, but I'll pay more attention to the ends this time around.

My biggest inspiration for SDL is this lady on IG (https://www.instagram.com/de__villl__/). I think her hair is drop-dead gorgeous. Itīs straight and fine like mine, but she has a whole lot more of it :D She is also a long-time henna user, so I am frequently seduced into thinking that if I went back to henna, I could get such amazing results, but I know thatīs not the case, that even henna will not make such a stunning difference to my own hair.

Hi everyone!

My last trim up to hip was November 30th, so almost half a year later, I'm again pondering what to do about my hair. I don't think I want to do another big cut up to hip right now. I actually don't even know how my hair is looking - I've not taken a pic of it since that trim (https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=49489&d=1701429905)! Not a single hair pic this year yet. I'll make it my mission to take one sometime soon.

Either way, I likely won't have the money to go for a trim until after my birthday in mid-June anyway. All my extra funds are spent on vocal coaching these days!

Nice to hear from you, Bri-Chan, and how your journey is going!

hi friends, long time since I popped in here last... it's been a really busy winter and spring so far. So much has happened here! Welcome, congratulations, and wows all around. :p :flowers: :smooch:

Spring hair news from chez baanoo: I finally decided, after a lot of waffling, to call bcl again after my cut last fall. it's still not reading the length 100% when it's dry and curly but if it's a straighter-haired day it's there. I've also done a few rounds of the four reasons brand of semiperm color deposit conditioner in golden apricot and I've been quite pleased with the results.

Your hair is so pretty!

Okay, here is a pic. Sorry it may be quite big and the quality is not great. Three years ago my hair was shoulder -collarbone length and now it's hip length. The wave pattern isn't the best in this picture, I was just going for a length shot.
I guess the difference between waist and hip is significant, as I got some comments like "how / when did your hair get so long? I don't remember it ever being this long!" I do feel like waits length was just "long" but at hip it has crossed over to "very long" because usually even main stream long haired people don't have longer than waist length.

My plan is now to pamper my hair more, start wearing it up more, and have small trims every once in a while, while still letting it grow longer. I think at least TBL would be a nice length, but I want to at least try classic length. It would make a really nice long braid :D I don't want the ends to get too wispy, although some taper is okay. I have quite much now at the ends, which is still remnant of my big shed in 2020. I have trimmed the thinnest ends a little already after going for so long without any trims, but there is still some of the thinner ends to trim off.

I have noticed a lot of splits and breakage lately, so I bought some protein treatments, as I've been just focusing on moisturising, and I think my hair needs some strengthening now.

The first pic is October 2021, the second one is now. I dont find my hair to grow fast, just the average 1cm/month. One year ago I got some long layers, those helped for sure to remove the bleach.
I'm sure you can reach TBL too! With your color it will be gorgeous.

So, I have some bleach left, I think around 5 inches. In the past two years I've used some deposit only hairdye on ends and midlenghts, usually red/purple. So that section has a strongest red tone than my natural color. So the ends are the result of faded red on bleach.

....and although Iīm glad I raced and acquired the length, I am not quite happy about my ends.

Five months later now, how's it going? I think your hair looks very nice, and yes the ends are thin in the pic, but they still look nice. And as I've prolly said before, I view hair growth/shaping like a writing project: write now, edit later. Hit that length goal first so you feel like you're making real progress (because you are). That's what I've been doing, and I love the progress.

I've come to the conclusion that for my hair braids are not very protective (although better than nothing)

I've wondered about that too. What's everyone's verdict on this?

Seems to me that abrade wouldn't exactly be an ideal solution to preventing friction damage. Even loose braids rub hair on hair and still need a tie at the end. ATM I just ponytail mine for bedtime, and I use the soft seamless QRTVI ties from Amazon. My recent hair-fear (I always have one) is crushing my hair between myself and the sheets, chair backs, whatever. I need to learn some simple up-do that doesn't need spears, pitchforks, and a month of practice...

And someone else with gorgeous hair to give me Imposter Syndrome for even being here among y'all. Just wow. And fwiw I like the highlights at the end. I cut my hair (by myself, cut on washed&dried hair) last week, as I had planned. I didnīt take a measuring tape to the bathroom, I went by feel. And landed at waist length.

My first thought was: Yes, yes, yes, I love it!

IF there's a good "short", that's def it. It's really beautiful. How did you get it so straight by yourself?

Hi all! I am pleased to finally be joining you here! :beerchug:

[...] I have many layers and a moderate amount of breakage, so I will stay in this thread until I get my U-shaped hemline back and also until most layers are solidly at hip.

:

Welcome aboard. You have seriously beautiful wavy hair.

Do you use an oil mask to strengthen your hair against breakage? Masking is the main reason my own hair isn't still SL, as it's fragile and dry despite being coarse. My own weekly mask is coconut oil, avocado oil and olive oil - those have been tested scientifically to actually penetrate into the hair, as opposed to cooking oil, mineral oil, motor oil, or ghawd knows what other horrors - and I mix them about 1/3 each; you can buy them from the baking aisle of the store and even pay with food stamps if necessary. I mostly avoid the "hair care" aisle, though I do love the Herbal Essences no-sulfate shampoos and a couple cone-free conditioners like Maui Moisture. Additional to that (though I'm sure not as important for me) is being very gentle with the hair esp when wet.

I browsed your albums and clearly you know how to grow hair, so resist the urge to cut! Hair like yours should be long, sexy and happy.

Thank you sincerely Vara La Fey for your kind comments on my hair. As for your question - I cut my hair this way: ponytailed it at the nape, combed thoroughly, then tied another soft elastic lower on the ponytail, slid it down, combed again, brought the ponytail over my shoulder and cut straight. After that first cut I took off the elastics, combed my hair and the hemline was a little bit crooked, so I combed and put both elastics back - and the longer hairs were instantly visible at the end of the ponytail, so I just snipped them off and then it was even.

Itīs not exactly obsessive or mentally unhealthy for me (yet... but getting there), but I donīt want to focus so much on attaining milestones any more.

When I got a pixie, I debated about it for months beforehand and I liked it for a few months afterwards - but then I decided I never want short hair again, I need long hair. This time I had very long hair - almost TBL and I cut back to WL for various reasons - and I realized I do need hair longer than BCL, so Iīm just going to keep growing with minimal trims and without obsessing - because I know I will be there in a year for certain and then Iīll be maintaining or growing even longer, so whatīs the point of fussing now? I need not to look at or check my length until then.

It's not like I can't keep away from the scissors if I want to, so those challenges doesn't really do much except prevent me from getting trims at times when I do think it's needed.
Not long before the current one is finished (sometime in June) so I migth stay for the remainder of that one, but it's very unlikely I will want to join the one for the last part of the year.

Thanks for explaining. I didn't know DIY trims were possible via pony-tailing. I'm skittish though, because the first time I tried my now-normal "center-part to the nape, comb forward and cut" method, I gave myself this severe V that I still have.

Lots of people seem to like my color. It's a mix of natural gray, very light blonde dye, and adjusting photo levels in an app so I can clearly see blouse prints and belt loops as background progress markers. I didn't use my normal floral blouse last time because my hair is now past the print pattern. YAY that! I keep thinking of re-adding some golden to my color, but a lotta the beach models I use as Hair Insp have that gray thing which is kinda in style the last few years. So I can be gray without seeming as old in comparison to those horrible evil beach models who obviously make deals with Satan just so they can look like that.

LHC will def make one obsess. But haven't you been through the super long hair growth a couple times? It seems to be newbies like me who obsess the worst, counting every new body marker or blouse print that our hair reaches. I wonder if the Been There Done That crowd just rolls their eyes.... "<harrumph> Kids!"

Great progress!

Thanks. I owe it all to my coconut/avocado/olive oil masking. My hair starts badly breaking if I neglect that for only about 2 weeks, so I'll be masking for life. I always wanted loooong hair but didn't know how much care some of us need to give it. I don't plan on cutting it unless one side of it loses an argument to a candle, or something.

Regular measurements will tell you for sure. I suspect most stalls are in our heads rather than our scalps.

I understand too. Sometimes it's easier to ignore it, then it's more of a shock to see the growth.

Agreed.

From CBL to WL is a long stretch of lonely frustrating highway (esp when you're 6'2"), but I've found that at waist, things happen faster. First it's reaching the inside of my elbows in the mirror, then it's touching my forearms when I sit, now it's wrapping around my forearms, and soon it will touch my navel and then my lap. Fortunately my goal is ~BCL-TBL, so I'll spare myself those long lonely frustrating stretches that come after CL.

I totally know that feeling! I do the (roughly) seasonal back shots and post them here, but also for a month longer than I've been doing that, I've been taking damp shots from the front every month or two. Strictly for my own progress charting, as they're topless for accurate body markers like moles and such. So that's two occasions I let myself get all neurotic about it. There are other times as well, but they're not scheduled. :-)

Vara La Fey, you are welcome and I hope I made myself clear, because I am not good at explaining or understanding directions in English. I did not use THE Ponytail method, which involves positioning the ponytail at the back/top/front of the head and results in creating long layers. I placed the ponytail on the lowest possible point on the nape (on my neck), merely to contain the hair in one place. This method results in even, straight hemline. Like Organically Anna does in this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M_t1CnSZnRk) (the cutting starts around 2:20), except I used one more elastic to contain my hair and thus avoided a bit of "freestyling" that I feel she did there.

Anyway, I wish you good luck with self-trimming - once you get the hang of it, itīs not scary but fun!

I used to use olive oil (both straight and a creme); my hair loves olive oil. I stopped doing it because it is so difficult to not let any of the oil touch my scalp or scalp hair, especially for a long time (it takes at least 12 hours for my low-porosity hair to absorb it). I can't let any type of oil touch my skin or I will immediately get a terrible fungal (malassezia) infection--even if I wash the oil off!

The last time I reached waist-length was in 2007, but getting there again in 2024 has been like 50 times more difficult because I am apparently super-sensitive to malassezia now. I am able to only use about 5 "safe" products to moisturize my hair and/or skin! :headache:

I did it! I took my first hair pic for this year. Last one was from almost half a year ago.

Well... This is what my hair looks like, I guess. Nothing much special about it, but at least there's now an updated photo.

Thanks so much, Für immer!

I can't decide what I want to do about the length. I really enjoy it here between hip and BCL and don't really have any real desire to grow longer at the moment.

Well, you could always maintain the length for awhile, and then see if you want to grow it longer or not. :)

That's what I've indeed been doing since my big chop last June. :) My "excuse" was trimming off some more bleach to get it all off, but now I'm at a point where small trims every now and then would suffice... But I've grown too fond of the practicality of this length!

Ah, I see.
Well, it's "hard" to do a change once you've found something you really enjoy.

I'm somewhere around 34-35" right now. I feel like I've stalled a bit recently. But hopefully it's all in my head

It's really grown so much! I feel like most of the time, stalls are in one's head and compounded by the difficulty of accurate measurements. ;)

My seasonal progress "report". If I didn't call HL before, I'm def calling it now.

It's not actually shorter in the middle, it's just laying funny. I want to hit BCL then do reshaping maintenance trims to end up with a soft sexy U shape.

I haven't noticed a Hair Sister around here. I hoped that would be a thing. I'm 1c2a, though looks more 1b as it gets longer. Coarse, dry, fragile, 37.5".

Looking lovely! So good to see you. It's grown a lot since last a length photo popped up - your color is absolutely divine.

Your texture is really beautiful - I love how delicate your wurls are. :o

I wasn't able to track evreytime I hit TBL, so I decided do show the first time ever and now. This two heads of hair have 2.5 years of difference.
The first pic's quality is terrible, I know.

Mercy, Bri, your hair is really gorgeous and it looks so healthy.

Honesly Ylva in the years I've been here I've been amazed at the transformation of your bleached hair to your natural hair - so much fuller, more textured, and something special indeed! I love it.

Here's my contribution of the day - a "ok fine we're now back at BCL for the ....3rd? time in as many years" photo, now with finally the hem I wanted!

Ylva I'm always amazed by the thickness of your 'new' hair.
I was in a similar situation for the length, in the end I deceided to postpone every decision and let it grow till it doesnt upset me.

baanoo your hemline did improve a lot!

Great hair and great hair length Baanoo! You chose the right lighting to bring out the best in the color of your hair.

Great hair and great hair length Ylva! I am kind of figuring, like you said, that is a practical length, and I hope to find out with my hair in another year or two. Definitely rich and thick too.

Sometimes when you grow your hair out, you feel like it doesn't grow any whatsoever.
Since I haven't measured since my last trim in early january this year, I did so now.
Went from 80 cm to 86.5 cm.
Nice to see that there's been some progress after all! :D
So prolly won't be too long before I can claim TBL.

baanoo your hemline did improve a lot!

I concur.

Deciding to postpone decisions til you’re happy with the length sounds like the wisest choice and I’ve been really impressed with how your hair has changed over the last few years. :)

Aw Brandt you’re too kind - really the lighting in this temporary apartment is kind of … a lot… in real life but it does make the color look extra warm! Thank you :o

Ooh excellent growth! How tall are you? I think tbl is something like 102cm for me; where I am now at bcl is ~96.

(Thank you :o )

Well, I am 171 cm. I'm not quite sure whether I have a long or short torso.
Think it's on the smaller one? But with longer legs. :undecided

That's a great (current) length for you as well! Am glad to hear your growing is going so well. :joy:

Oohh we’re almost the exact same height - I think I call tbl when it’s basically “seat-grazing length” too so maybe that is part of it?

Ah, didn’t know that. :D
It sure is funny how different people's body types can be.
Like in another thread on LHC where the question was if the FTL is above, or after Mid-thigh (mine is after, and FTL on me is 16 cm before kneecaps).

Have been at bcl for a while now (a month or so, don't remember).
I'll call TBL when the hemline reaches the middle of bottom, as I think the tailbone is around that place for me. :p

It’s funny indeed, I often wonder when I see someone getting past milestones much faster than me, whether they may be shorter lol. Is there a thread about height vs milestone lengths? :D

When I first measured in November 2022 I was at APL 59-60cm, now I’m at 73, two cm above waist. I’ve had three trims since then, probably a total of 10cm.
And btw I’m 170 and BCL and TBL on me are also 96 and 102cm respectively :D HL is 82.
FTL=MTL on me, but 16cm before kneecaps too

The butt is such an abyss, and I'm only just knocking on the gates of Moria. It's going to take years to cross.

I'm getting close to BCL, but(t) it will still be months before I'm solidly there.

Well, it's very close so I guess you could say that, but I think my, hmm, bc, starts a bit lower than on an average person x)

Plus I usually like to be a little bit past a milestone before I feel comfortable about it, because on a wavier day the ends flip up.

But okay I guess this is around bcl yeah

Ah, ok :) perhaps it was that angielsku of the oicture that made it harder for me to see it.
And you are right, one's body proportions can be very different from others.

I understand why. :D

I’ve just realized this week my hair is officially waist length. Just another year or two and I’ll be at my goal of hip. I’ve had long hair for a while and only last year set a goal for myself.
