It's good to read everyone progresses. I'm close to TBL again, maybe I'll be there for the end of the next month. I don't feel any urge to trim.

Lizard, I'm glad this feels like a chill length for you! Looking forward to seeing your hair pre- and post- trim. :)
Bri, wow I feel like you trimmed back to bcl so recently! What great growth.
I was thinking about your alternative-style ennui after you posted about it in the other thread and wondered if a stripe of color - whether dyed or with a quality clip-in - might help encourage you on your way? At the very least it would be something fun and not a huge commitment.
This came to mind because I had been feeling so down about my hair; like it's just this tangled fluffy mess of not-growing / not lush and thick / whinging and whining etc etc, until I had my bangs trimmed into shape and then it was like magic: all of a sudden, I felt 100% more positive about my hair! :magic:

Thank you for asking, baanoo! The photos you've posted of your hair recently have been just gorgeous. Your current length suits you so well.
ETA: I wrote this before seeing your post above and I have to say I am delighted you're feeling more positive about your hair, because I am feeling very positive about your hair! Your fringe is beautiful! And fortunately you have a lot of photographic evidence to prove to yourself that it is indeed growing. I would describe it as lushly ethereal.
illicitlizard, I love how you put it - "a very chill length". So nice when we can enjoy the journey and appreciate where we are.
Bri-Chan, that's so exciting. How was it when you were at TBL before - does it feel different this time?
As for me, I'm doing well after deciding to trim back to HL a few weeks ago. I've been experimenting a lot with my personal style recently, incorporating fantasy elements and celebrating the turn of the seasons (I am a lover of winter). HL is a slightly awkward length for me compared to WL and (I presume) TBL: the bulk of my hair is like a big heavy cape, then the ends are these wild tassels that dangle in the space made by the curve of my back. I've been improving my routine and imparting more moisture, which my hair loves.

I'm finally feeling like I can see the progress of my hair growing, probably because waist to hip is a shorter milestone for me. It's almost upper hip when soaking wet now, I think I should reach solid hip around the Solstice/Christmas.

Slowly growing, getting a trim soon, hopefully I can communicate well enough that I don't end up back up above waist!
This feels like a very chill length for me.
I'd also like to know y'all are travelling :)
I'll keep my fingers crossed for you :scissors::lol:
I'm not trusting my communication skills quiet yet. Not sure I come across forceful enough, so it's still no trimming for me for the time being ;)

I'm happy for you. That feeling is so important :)
I had a similar feeling once I managed to somehow weigh my ends down with a heavier conditioner. My hemline doesn't seem to have this giant gap anymore or at least it isn't as pronounced anymore. It stopped the urge to cut back to waist.

I also prefer the colder seasons. So great you found a length you're comfortable with. That's so important. What fantasy elements are you doing? That sounds interesting.
I'm finally feeling like I can see the progress of my hair growing, probably because waist to hip is a shorter milestone for me. It's almost upper hip when soaking wet now, I think I should reach solid hip around the Solstice/Christmas.
I also had the impression waist to hip did not take too long. Sounds like awesome progress :D

Fair, what a beautiful thing to say! I can’t imagine a nicer description than “lushly ethereal.”
It’s funny how just a few cm one way or another feels like a radically different experience - fabulous curtain of hair at waist? Great! At TBL? Great! :queen:
But at hip? Oof what even are these tassels…
Yes - seconding Finda! Please do share these fantasy elements - I would love to see them.
I'll keep my fingers crossed for you :scissors::lol:

Ah it really is the little things sometimes! I notice too that when the weather is really hot and sticky, these find strands just collapse - I’m glad autumn is here (at least on paper and hopefully in person soon!).
Judging by your hair in recent photos I can’t see why you would even be tempted by a trim - your ends look great. Do you think you’ll make it to TBL by the winter solstice?

Such a good feeling!
Waist to hip was really quick for me; if you’re there wet now it should definitely make it by the end of the year.

It's amazing what a small change can do, that's how I felt at the start of the year, eugh everything about my hair is blah > gets face framing layers > WOW my hair's great! :magic: I'll certainly be posting pictures once I get the trim, can't stay away ;)
The recent pictures of your hair that I've seen look amazing, hope you're continuing to feel less down about your hair!

It's so much easier now that it's long enough to put up and forget about it, once I could do a couple of hair stick buns the journey became much more bearable.
I would like to join the chorus of people saying please show us how you incorporate fantasy into your style!! Creative hair is 10/10. Interesting what you say about HL being a bit awkward, will have to see if I feel similarly once I finally get there.

Woohoo! Almost there! I think the top of the hips is quite close to waist on most people, especially compared to distances between other milestones. I've shifted where I'm calling hip down slightly because if I use the shelf bit at the top is <2" from waist -_-

Thanks Goddes, I honestly don't know if I'm going to bite the bullet on classic. I don't think I can, I can barely wear it down now, maybe it'll grow in my: "I can't be bothered to maintain it period." I honestly think that will happen, because the weirdest thing happened to me. I was at BCL not that long ago, and thought it will take ages to get to TBL, I also trimmed it twice in last few months and not a small amount! But weirdly enough it grew without any attention from me. I was busy working and it was busy growing beyond my buttcrack... :D I was basically shocked yesterday when I took that photo...:D And the ends aren't great , I'm not particularly happy with wispy ends, but I'm hopeful that in time, other hairs will catch up, and it won't look so thin...:/

I trimmed back to full bcl that time, tho. Anyway I'm surprised too.
The problem with the strand is that I have already a lot of colors in my hair. I have my brown and then few shades of blonde and I feel like a strand will make it more chaotic. Indeed, I've tried to dye my ends pink but I wasn't very satisfied with the resukt until it faded out almost completely (avatar picture).
It's gald that bangs were enough to make you feel better about your hair! That's the type of change I'm looking for.
Bri-Chan, that's so exciting. How was it when you were at TBL before - does it feel different this time?

Moisture and conditioning were the big changes I made in my routine since I (re-) joined this forum, almost two years ago nw. It does make a difference.
As for me, I basically reached TBL in mid Juni and between Juni and July I've trimmed 'round 1.6 inches. Yes, it feels way better and it looks better. I will not trim again till springtime at least.

It's weird, I'm in the mood to trim it back and let it grow again...But then I watch a Brit video, check some of Siv's pics and I keep my cool...I'm still struggling with my ends, I'm not happy with them, but sometimes, they don't look as bad as I think they are, and that kind of comforts me.. :) Those damn bangs from 6 years ago are still making me pay my due. Half of my hairline and maybe more is in bang length, so when that catches up, I'll probably be happier about my ends :)

Beauty to me, I think your ends look just fine. I know it can be frustrating dealing with growing out bangs and letting them catch up with the rest of your hair. You must be letting all of your hair grow out all in one length, right? I don't think that I can handle letting all of my hair grow out all in one length. I've always had my fringe or bangs since I was 6 years old, and I've been loving them ever since. Now about trimming back....don't do it. I think you'll regret it. It's a good thing you saw Brit's video and Siv's photos. Because, that encourages you to continue to let your hair grow out.

I think I’m going to take pictures from the side now, I think it gives me a more accurate photo. So here is my hair right now! I relate so much to this feeling of “how long is my hair exactly?!” And then I stop thinking about it for a while and it keeps going on.
If I was going to guess I’d say you were in that lovely hip+ zone. :)

I agree with the "about hip" assessment, lovely hair sasha fox! It's such a nebulous series of markers between waist and classic, I get a lot of conflicting opinions about where I'm calling hip so it seems it's up to the individual:p
I think it'd be a lot easier to get a picture from the side, especially if the ends were flipping up like yours are in this photo, will have to try it some day :o
baanoo that's the key isn't it, just ignore the length classification and let it grow - you'll get to an indisputable marker eventually :)

Honestly I think I've reached solid Hip when dry at this point, but it's so hard for me to take a photo of evidence myself so I'm mostly just going by feeling, lol! But I'm definitely sure I've reached Waist. It's much easier to confirm that my wet hair is past Hip, so it counts, right? Being a wurly can be so confusing sometimes. :p

Guys, I'm graduating this thread, with 99 cm/39 inches and TBL :D I've tried to take a photo, unfortunately the quality is bad (I'm alone and I still have to figure out in which spot of this flat I can take an hair photo easily). I had it in a braid all the day.

I don't post much, but I love lurking and ogling at all the beautiful hair.
Congrats, Bri-Chan, on TBL!
This picture is from a few weeks ago right before I washed it. I had it in a battle braid and the waves were too nice for me not to take a picture of. Sorry for the bad lighting, my bathroom is pretty dark.

Hello everyone! I have arrived from the MBL to waist thread since I am now at waist (though my hair is hip length if I straighten it) and aiming for tailbone! Classic is my ultimate goal and it gets closer with each passing month. I will probably trim back to waist (stretched) at the end of the year because my ends really need it, but that's okay!
Did anyone else find that their hair actually got a little bit easier to manage now that it's longer? Maybe because mine is curly, it used to be wild if I didn't take steps to tame it. Now my hair is heavy enough that it keeps my hair from turning into poof.

Another person in the same boat, except mine just got to waist stretched! I find it interesting how at APL-MBL I was constantly like "when is it going to GROW" but now I feel like every passing month it feels longer and longer(Probably because waist is the longest I've had in at least 7 or 8 years)
I find my hair easier at this length too but I don't know how much that is due to finding a routine that works finally or the length

I found the same thing! Of course, I spent years trimming my hair from MBL to BSL for one reason or another, so that's partially the reason why that felt like it took forever - because it did
Good luck on your growth!

Hello ExpectoPatronum! :D And everybody in the waist to tailbone abyss! Glad I've got so much company here. It will be interesting to see who gets to tailbone first! I'm a slow grower so I doubt it will be me, lol.
Patronum I am trying not to trim - my ends are fine, I just feel they're getting a little too fairy-tailed. But I will sign up for the no-trim 2022 challenge. I will do a small trim at the end of this year I think.

I cut it back to BCL the other day (around 8 cm/3.15 inches), so I'm back here. I'm not sure how my hair journey will go on, for now I'll let it grow again for the first half of the year but I feel more relaxed about the whole process now.

I saw your post about this in another thread and first of all… welcome back ;)
I hope you keep feeling relaxed about the journey! Are your ends behaving better in your new climate post-cut?
Recently, I was thinking about how easy it is to get caught up in an achievement mentality; I really don’t want that kind of energy around my hair.
This is a good thread - if I ever graduate that will be great but I suspect I’ll be wandering around the tbl neighborhood for a long time.

I think I can see myself gravitating in the BCL-CL area without a clear milestone to achieve.

I just trimmed today back to just past BCL, too. The very ends had reached TBL, but I didn't feel ready to call it since they were barely visible. I did the no trimming challenge for all of 2021. I cut about 1.5 inches/4 cm and am ready to grow! I will probably trim more frequently and less to keep the ends looking nicer. A year is a lot of damage for me. Happy New year everyone!

It hits differently after you hit the goal. Than you're more relaxed about all of those decisions. I trimmed twice since hitting tbl, and I don't regret it at all. Still have the same feeling of length etc. I'm now more into nurturing it, to get rid of the dyed parts. When and if I hit tbl again, great, I'm just no longer anxious about any of it...

As baanoo mentioned you need a certain number of posts before you can host images through the forum - I use imgur because I find it easier (though it's harder to set up an account there now), but some people have trouble posting through there privately - if you post publically the imgur horde can be really nasty.

How did you get those lovely waves?
It's heat styled waves by a hairdresser. She's my coworker (I'm a dog groomer, it's a combined salon) and she's been wanting to curl my hair since forever. It looked good for maybe 3 hours before falling out lol.
Very long hair + betty bangs, that's my signature lol!! I'm sure it'll look good on you too!!
Magalo: Magnificent hair! But isn't this longer than tailbone?
No, it's very solid tailbone (straight hemline no layers)... I think the way I tilted my head made the front pieces hang lower and look longer. 😌 I'll try to take a photo from the back this weekend! I'm def on my way to classic, these two markers are so close

Hi all, it’s been a minute since I was really active on these boards. Like lots of folks, this past year or two has been A LOT. Mostly in the hair department it’s been lots of life stress and postpartum shedding, since I had my second child last March (so currently almost 10 months pp.) The shed began around 4 months pp and by now has slowed down a lot. Starting to see little inch long baby hairs around my front hairline, so that’s encouraging as well.
Yesterday I was eating dinner with my hair down because it was drying. I realized my ends are brushing the seat of my chair and that’s my personal tailbone measurement (since the coccyx curves into the body, the lowest point is just floating off the seat of the chair when I sit.) So I am calling tailbone! :joy:
Took some pics today but I don’t love them since I realized after taking my hair down this morning that I was a bit heavy handed with the oils and balms last night. Oops. Anyhoo. Here’s my first pics in quite a long time and a cheerio to my friends on this thread. I will see some of you very soon on the next thread I expect!

BCL feels like HL to me, but my measurements don't agree:( I think it'll take me like at least 7 months to get to TBL, but it's worth it.

Waist to tailbone has been a rather humbling journey for me. I'm currently at about 1" from TBL again - I've been here two times before, and trimmed back to HL each time. My hair has a clear taper from about BSL downwards. While it starts as a low iii (4.25" circ), this only makes the taper more obvious. It could be that this is my natural taper, but I think there is likely a large damage component. I remember going around when I was at WL saying my hair was resilient and didn't mind being worn loose every day - well, perhaps it's time to revise that belief!
Has anyone else here had a similar experience in the HL-TBL abyss?

Not specifically HL-TBL but my hair is definitely less resilient than I might have once liked to believe, especially at longer lengths. In my case, I suspect hair elastics have been the culprit. Around knee it's postively thin! Although thinness on first pass seems to be pretty common finding, at least throughout the entire classic to knee thread. Subsequent passes seem to fill out

Yep, this is me right now. I'm just at top of buttcrack level, but only a smudge of my hair is there. I have some wicked taper from waist onwards, which I'm pretty sure is damage from wearing it down constantly a couple of years back. My hair isn't thick (2.4 inches) but I'd be fine with it if there was minimal taper. Hopefully a year of maintaining and careful updos will help. It's very annoying as you wear your hair down thinking its all OK at the time, then the damage comes and sneaks up on you months or years later!

Yes! up until waist, it had pretty much same thickness from neck to waist. Everything that grew longer than waist, was thinned out for some reason, and no amount of trimming and regrowing seems to help that... Not everyone here has that problem, I noticed, some guys make it to tbl with pretty much the same thickness. But I struggle with it. I thought it's because of the hair cycle, not enough of them make it that long, but idk anymore ...

I'm honestly a bit surprised that I'm writing in this thread. I really expected my hair to be around BSL because it feels short, but then when I took the photos today I seem to have hit WL? (WL is where the mid-top of my thumbs are, oversized shirt :silly: ) Sure, I haven't taken note of my length since before I cut it in October, never did anything but a rough estimate once it was cut ... but I really thought that WL would be my sweet spot (?). I'm not sure. Maybe it's just the short pieces at the front that needs to grow longer, or maybe hip length is my sweet spot? I'll figure it out eventually :p

I know I'm a bit late, but congratulation to all of you who reached TBL :o
I have the sensation I'll be here for a looong time. I'm around 37,5 inches/95.4 cm. By the end of the no-trimm challenge of the first half the year, I'll be at TBL again (I grow 1 cm a month and TBL on me is 39 inches/99 cm) but I'm not sure about my hairgrowth journey. When I cut more than 2.5 inches a month ago, I thought I would have regret it but it feels like it gave me more courage actually. I've seen I'm starting to bee very uspet about the bleach damage. I don't think my hair is overall ugly because of that, but after 2 years I'm getting impatient.I don't even exclude to cut it all to around APL one day, when my virgin hair will be there (now the shorter pieces reaches my shoulders more or less). So, after the no-trimm challenge my plan is to cut again a consistent amount of hair, maybe also a little bit more and to see how I feel about that. It's not that I want short hair, I don't want to have my hair this damaged anymore. To bee clear, the healthiest section of my hair has, for the first 1.5 inches, just regular dye. Then, to around BSL it has 3 bleaches on black dyed hair, and some dyes to tone the result on top of that. I'm also lucky for my hair to be soo strong. And again, I'm speaking about the last damaged section lol the difference with my virgin hair is unbelivable.

This is a tough length, Bri-Chan. I am finding that I need to be more careful about my ends than I ever have been before because everything I do around the house (when my hair is down drying or resting, or if even my braid is loose sometimes) catches my ends. I don’t have bleach or any dye and I’m finding I need to really be more mindful of where my ends are at!
Sitting on your hair sounds glamorous but it’s more freaky than anything else. Not a good feeling to be caught and not know how to move next to get free!
BexLocks
January 28th, 2022, 07:51 AM
I go back and forth between feeling like I need to be very cautious about my ends to prevent breakage and wanting to enjoy my hair down more often because as it gets longer I probably won't have that option. I just recently discovered the natural texture waves and wurls and am having fun with that! If I ever get past classic I won't be able to wear it down very much.
Bri-chan, I completely understand feeling impatient when your goals are in sight but you haven't quite reached them. It sounds like you have a good plan that will help you not make impulsive decisions you may regret. The important thing is that you are happy!

I think I'll continue my journey to classic. Now I'm about 1 inch far from TBL, and I need less than 5 inches for classic. I could even reach it for the end of the year without trims, but I'm sure I'll trim. I'll be there probably in about an year.
That doesn't sound too far off :)

No, it isn't. Indeed, I don't even exclude maintain around TBL for a while to cut off some of my dead ends.

I totally understand. I'm gonna go the distance to classic I've decided, but the itch to maintain is getting harder to ignore. And tailbone is a length that looks quite long, even to my eyes lol

Last time I trimmed something like an inch. Growing back to BCL. I feel pretty good since it's still longer than ever. But my favorite thing about the hair right now is going back to deep henna not exactly gaining length.

I have a pair of jeans that has a design on the back that falls right at hip length on me, thats how I plan the measure when I get to that point. Do you have any clothing that you can use as a marker?
Oh, fiddlesticks! I forgot about this thread and didn't reply, I'm sorry. :( Thank you for your suggestion and since it's been four months since I posted that I can be sure now that I'm at solid Hip! :o
My ends are grazing Tailbone, it's quite obvious when wet as I can feel it directly (tmi) but when dry it's definitely at best at Hip. And I will only consider myself graduated from this thread (which I shall subscribe from now on) once I reached there when dry.

I was looking back on an old photo from the last time I had long hair and realized it was longer than I thought! In the picture it looks longer than hip, but not as long as TBL. Maybe grazing BCL, it's hard to tell with the camera angle. Anyway, I'm very close to that length now - I'll probably surpass it in a few more months and end the year with hair longer than it's ever been!

Does anyone else feel like waist to hip is kind of a slog? Last year I started growing from around APL and I felt like I breezed through until waist, and now it's taking an eternity. I think it might be because I've been paying more attention to my hair so it seems kinda "stuck". At any rate I have at least 3" until solid hip with my shrinkage so I guess I better make peace since I'll spend most of this year growing to hip haha

Waist to hip was excruciating. Hip to tailbone engendered some impatience, too. Once I reached tailbone I stopped caring so much.

Waist to hip was pretty fast for me, just a few months. But I have a low waist, so there are just a couple inches between the two milestones. Now that I'm at hip it seems to be taking forever though.

My hair grows pretty steady it seems but ugh the quality of my ends deteriorates so fast. Perpetual splits. It splits as fast as I trim them off. I think a larger trim might gelp, 2 or 3 inches, but I don’t want to lose the length. Conundrums

Same for me, not really a slog at all and only a couple of inches. But now I'm also playing the waiting game, it'll take until the end of the year by my estimation to reach the next milestone...

Some hair just splits, nothing you can do I guess. You can always mull it over for some time but I hope you work out a solution that you're happy with! I'm also very precious about trims, never like doing a big one, though sometimes it's necessary

I get you, it's much easier for us shorties to grow out our hair with more "instant" gratification of reaching milestones. That's why I sort of prefer measurements rather than milestones, some people think growing to hip from buzz in ~4yrs is really impressive growth, but my hair is only 31" since my torso is so short! That's not even waist length for some people (my partner included).
Long hair on someone with wider spaced milestones does look very impressive in real life, so take heart in that, though the wait is long!

That sounds frustrating Jane99! For what it's worth, I can share my experience with splits. In the henna-ed parts of my hair (part of which was previously bleached), I've found that it is reacts very poorly to protein, and my hair really does not react well to products that are not PH balanced. For instance, shampoo bars were a total disaster split-wise. Both result in tangles and then lots of splits for me, so I tend to gravitate towards the products without these. Of course, this might not be the case for you, but I thought I'd share just in case. (Of course, my hair splits a little bit with any care, but the protein and the PH levels are what seem to result in these sort of perpetual splits that you're mentioning....)
Congrats, Bexlocks!:joy:

I have the exact same feeling, I'm creeping up on waist and for me that feels like the cutoff between longish and actually long. The last time I made it to hip I immediately got frustrated and did a major chop, so this time I'm trying to be really patient and give myself a chance to get used to having actually long hair.

I also chopped my hair the last time I got to hip a few years back! I was frustrated by several factors though that I hope don't crop up this time(so far I have a WAY better routine and my hair is much healthier so fingers crossed 3" more won't throw it off)

YES! Right?! It's like it's just always there now, Even in a braid it's long enough to get trapped! It's the longest my hair has been in a good 4 or 5 years so I think I've just got out of habit of keeping it away from things because I don't remember it always being in my food or elbows like it is now but maybe it was and I just learned to live with it :D

This totally makes sense to me, I hit my stretched length marker for waist months ago but still don't look there visually, even though by the numbers I'm 1.5" past now. I think these lengths are probably where even gentle waves start really making a difference in apparent length. Now I just feel like I'm in no man's land of kind of but not really waist. I swear my hair kept not looking waist, not looking waist until it did! it's around 2.5" past so hopefully yours will start looking waist soon. I've always felt like my hair has a lot of shrinkage for only barely looking wavy, Mostly it's my ends though they never lay straight ( it's just like when you see people with shoulder length who have that little flip on the ends? It does that naturally at any length)

I wanted to measure because I had it in my head i had 5 inches to go but it actually seems I only have about 3! Hopefully, this means I'll be at hip by October, my birthday month. :) Hip is surprisingly hard to figure out as even though I have hip bones sticking out at the front, it's hard to measure at the back.

I relate to this! I felt weird calling waist since it's an inch above unstretched. But I figured that if I wait for my unstretched hair to reach waist, my stretched hair would be near tailbone length.

I'm still a ways away from needing to worry about this, but where exactly is hip? The "point" my hips make on the front of my body is almost exactly BCL. The point you measure for clothing (largest circumference) is about halfway down my butt. I feel like other people have a progression like waist > hip > bcl...is this a different definition of hip? Or is my body just weirdly shaped?

hey friends, been a while since I posted in this thread! I took my spring length shot today and thought I could get away with calling bcl - even though, since I have anti-gravity hair, on normal/wavy days it doesn't really look it.

Thank you, kokoro, foreveryours, Finda, bri!
Oh, yessss :D - it’s taken a while to get back here since my trim!
Bri, tbl is right about the lowest point of the decorative stitching on my jeans’ pockets - so maybe 7-8cm? You know me… allergic to measuring tapes! :cheese:

Stunning, baanoo and Potauvert!
baanoo, I love how the longer your hair grows, the more of its beautiful colour variations we get to see. How does it feel?
Potauvert, only you can tell where HL is on you, but to me that looks like a gorgeous well-maintained shiny HL. It creates a powerful vertical line that I can imagine the character in that awesome drawing on your wall wearing in a slicked-back low ponytail.

Oh Fair, you’re always too kind :crush: - it feels good thus far! I do laugh sometimes at how when I was a younger person I thought my hair was such a tedious and drab color and now that it’s starting to be threaded with a few whites I appreciate it so much more.

OMG CONGRATULATIONS on hip! It's so hard to tell where to actually call it so if you think it's at hip that picture sure looks to be hip, so I'd say definitely at hip :) That photo looks so nice, your hair is so smooth all the way down - I notice because mine's been frizzy on the ends of late, beautiful hair :o
