Ah, do the ends tangle a lot or do you notice the damage going up the hair?
I usually set a goal for myself and when the tapered part of my hair is well past that point I cut back to it. (And then I move that line down without actually cuttung ;)) But I need a hairdresser to do the cut so I want to have a distinct point up to which it's okay to cut.
Also, my hair salon offers this version of S&D where they twist strands of your hair and then cut the damaged tips off. I had that done the last time and it worked wonders and made my hair a lot easier to comb with only loosing minimal length. But now, with the salons closed again and, before that, not being allowed to cut dry hair, I might need to wait a while longer.
In three months your hair is probably gonna grow 1.5 inch at the very least? Then you'd be where your are now, as long as the damage doesn't move up. Is the damage super annoying for you? Then I would trim now. Don't you want to go back to pre bcl? Then I'd wait and see how the ends looks in a month.
So, my hair does a lot of tangles because of its own nature, So I have a lot of tangles starting from the roots. But, the most damaged section of my hair gives me more troubles. But we are speaking about at least... 5 inches. I should cut back to WL to solve the problem. 1.5 inch is a "lot" to me in terms of growth, because I had for few times like 0,7 cm per month of growth. Lately it's growing at more regular speed, but I'm taking supplement for skin related issues (prescribed by my doctor) which have effects on hair growth too.
I don't know... if cutting that 1.5 inches I'd be able to remove all the extra damaged section, I could do it just now and I'd be happy. But in my situation it can't do a lot of difference. That's why I'm still thinking about every option...

Bri-Chan I also have lots of tangles around the nape area and above my ears. In terms of tangles, my tapered ends are surprisingly easy going.
So if I'm undertsanding correctly you fear the 1.5 is not enough and that you'd have to cut more in order to get rid of all the damage? And then you'd be unhappy because of loosing so much length since it's taking you longer than average to regrow? Is that the reason you think in your situation it doesn't do a lot of difference? That's a super hard dilemma and I hope you will find a solution you will be happy with!

Okay! I am between waist and tailbone and have a photo to post. :) It is my end of year length check, Measured by my sweet husband at 34". This to me means that a goal of 40" by the end of next year is possible perhaps. Either way:::

Yes! FYI my hair is pretty much all damaged. But the lighter section is the most damaged one.

I hit tailbone (barely) but trimmed back to BCL on 12/10 because my ends were ROUGH. I'm going to do some intense S&D before the new year and may do one more small trim depending on how the ends look. Then perhaps a no-trim 2021?
@Bri-Chan It may be worth trimming the 1.5 just to see what effect it'll have. Sometimes a small trim makes a big difference, especially if it'll prevent some tangles and therefore cause less damage to the rest of your hair. Obviously I don't want to pressure you to trim if you don't want to, but personally I find that I'm happier with my hair losing a little length but feeling and looking healthier. Also, it definitely "helps" your growth rate if you trim out hairs that are splitting or breaking off at the ends!

haha! I appreciate my uneven hem for now, because in some ways the tapering allows for a well hidden end underneath the bulk of my buns. Since I exclusively bun my hair, I have been using that crutch for a long time.
How much do you trim?!

Bri-Chan, I can relate to your trim dilemma so much! I have about 10 cm of really damaged hair left, and I feel like there is no point in trimming something "middle of the way" because it would be lame to lose a noticeable amount of length, yet not have my ends feel significantly different. So there is only point in trimming either the entire 10 cm, which I am not ready to do, or something like 1 cm just to refresh the ends and continue living with the stupid, damaged ends for 8 months or so.
It is funny how similar our hair situations are, though! Plus textures and colours alike.

I am not sure about a final goal, right now it is classic, which to me means when I sit down it touches the seat behind me. (That is how I always interpreted classic so that is how I understand it lol) Once I hit that length, I will determine how much longer to go, but my true goal is to not cut again until 2030.

I last trimmed in May. I do my own trims. That time I took off around 2". I always end up taking off more than I plan because I eyeball the sides wrong and get one shorter than the other and then have to even them up. Usually I try to take of half an inch to an inch.

Oh wow. I am not really brave enough to trim much off. When I did trims I would do the forehead ponytail method, only cutting about an inch of the longest fairy tale ends. But that was literally it. XD I was always too nervous to make it uneven.

I made a few hair post for myself the other day, one half damp and the other dry. I was shocked to see that I've grown very grabby fairytaled ends. I think I need to cut 5 cm off my hair, which saddens me. I wanted to achieve tailbone and my other goals as soon as possible.
But I also want nice hair, and a reasonably blunt hemline so I will wait a week more I think to give myself time to change my mind. If I still want it as much as I do know, I will trim, which will cost me a half year of growing.
I have no idea what I'm doing wrong, my hair has never been so healthy, moistured and shiny, (I have pictures to compare) so why the fairytale ends?
I've also been thinking and I want to have my hair down a bit more often. I feel much more beautiful with my hair down. I'm happy to have learned how to put my hair up, I could never do it. It always came down or gave me terrible headache. But I want a balance now. I hope I still can grow a considerable length even if I don't have my hair up 24/7.
So I will break both of my promises to myself: I will trim and also will not always have my hair up.
Just wanted to share these thoughts, hence the long story.

I did start trimming my own hair when I went through a stage where I didn't really care if I messed it up. I figured I'd just cut it shorter. It's actually not too hard. I use Feyes self trim method and it takes me like 10-15 minutes. So far I haven't messed it up.

I wear my hair down a lot. I figure I have it to enjoy it, and wearing it pulled back all the time isn't that enjoyable. It hasn't caused too much damage, my ends are still fairly healthy. I totally understand where you're coming from though. I also don't think your ends look too fairy tales from your picture you shared. I think the wavy hair might help hide them. I think fairy tailed ends are really pretty on wavy and curly hair. It reminds me of Galadriel.

Ada-banana I usually had hair down from years. Most time I had hair around waist, with cutting 1-2 cm/2-3 months.
In August I started wear my hair up. Now I'm ALMOST on tailbone (maybe 5 cm) :). It really work! From that time I made few times microtrimming (maybe 2 cm from all cuts) and once "big trimming", full 2 cm in one moment!
Also it's just more comfortable, seriously!
EDIT
I just understood... I cut 4 cm in 5 months! In next year... I'll try don't cutting so much!

Through the summer I was wearing it down everyday except for when I was doing something outside. This winter I'm trying to wear it braided everyday to keep the static at bay and also to help protect it more since I'm trying to grow longer and not maintaining anymore. I also usually wear it down for church and when we go somewhere.

The point in trimming something in the middle is to remove that section not all at once, but it obviously means it will take more time to reach the goal...

I also definitely didn't want to take off the entire 10 cm of damage, so I ended up doing a 2 cm trim, which was... on the braver side for me. I'd been taking off 0.5-1 cm for the past year and a half. I think my hair feels a bit shorter, and the ends do feel better to the touch, but I don't think I notice any difference in tangling, which was expected, as that would require a much bigger trim.
Well, now I'm a tiny bit closer to healthy hair again, so I guess it was worth it even though it feels a bit "meh" both in terms of length gains as well as improvement of condition.
Bri-Chan

Ylva, I have more tangles at WL length in general, because, also if it's relatively less damaged, it's thicker.
Your trim gave me some courage, so I (almost impulsively) trimmed. I trimmed something between 2 cm and 2.5 cm ... now with straight hair I'm at something like 91,3 cm (almost 36 inches). It obviously doesn't look so much different in terms of length, but I feel it shorter because I'm no more at BCL. I used Feye's method for the U shape, it's a soft U.
This will be the year of TBL for me, and I plane to not trim until I'm solidly there (probably in 10 months or so).
For the condition, meh. But it's thicker...

That sounds good. We'll both regain these 2 cm in no time. I have a habit of "counting down" to when I'll have regained my lost length; it somehow makes it feel less tedious. So now I'm thinking that by the time March rolls around, I will have gotten it back, and from then on, will be growing longer again. Beautiful! You're so close! I've at about the same length, and I keep checking to see if I've reached it yet. Strangely, it seems to be the same every time I look (like twice a day, lol) Your progress is amazing.

Hi folks! I'm back to the boards, it's been a long time... Not even sure what my length is at this point, need to measure it. I'll also start January 1 with taking monthly pictures. I need some support to keep treating my hair well, otherwise I'll give up... So yeah... Let's go :)

I should have a setback but I don't. My length is fine but the sides of my hair are singed. In trying to put out a grease fire I caught my hair alight. I had it down and it was in front of me. I only have a very minor burn on my hand because I patted out the fire with it. I'm very, very blessed to not be in the ER with half my face burned. And I had been meaning to cut the perimeter again anyway. I have it in a very deep U and the bangs and sides have grown out so I think I'll cut the sides again and maybe take an inch off the length for good measure. I still can't believe this happened. My brother is a firefighter and lives here part-time. Too bad he isn't home!

Glad you are okay! Hope the kitchen is undamaged as well! That mast have been quite a shock. And keep an eye on the burn. I've thought in the past I had a minor burn, but then it blistered prettey bad after all.
This brings me back: My hair once caught fire as well. At easter, I was in church, and everyone was carrying a candle. I had my hair open and bent over for a moment. Then all of a sudden I thought: dude, what's smelling so bad? And then, before I realized it was me who was on fire, the woman next to me started screaming and beating at my coat. In the end, only the front hair was singed a little bit. But the flame seemed huge. It was super embarrasing and a lesson to always put my hair up when handling an open flame ;)

Wow! Very scary! Glad it wasn't more serious. I singed a few if my hairs on a candle once. It does not smell good. I'm extra cautious around fire now.

Thanks, guys. I definitely acted fast. I'm glad my mom wasn't home because now I'm sure she would've hurt herself trying to save me. I am so glad it didn't hit my face. The flames were inches from it. I washed and trimmed my hair and it seems fine. I looked it up: a grease fire will ignite at 500°F. Flat irons can get that hot. So I figure the damage is a bit worse than one of those might do but not too devastating. My hand doesn't even feel as bad as a curling iron burn. I think I put it out fast enough to avoid any major damage. I KNEW I should have walked away from my computer and taken an actual break instead of trying to heat up oil while checking on something. Next time: proper break and hair UP.

I did some quick calculations, and I should be at tailbone length by late fall 2021, as long as I hold to my no trimming vow. I calculate that I grow over six inches a year and tailbone is currently only five inches away.
It's really encouraging to finally see your goal in sight.

It's exciting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Sometimes the goal is so far away, it can feel like we'll never reach it.
I think I'll be there by late fall of next year. Hopefully definitely by Christmas.

Yes! I'll hopefully be there in the summertime. I need about 3 inches, and in this year I've grown something like 5.3 inches.
However, my final goal is Classic. More like a solid classic. I think I need 7-8 inches for that.

Here's my latest length shot – with added bonus front & back photos of my coronet braid today:

... the back:

I didn't section perfectly evenly and thus had about a 4" tassel on my braid; it's pinned just to the right of the nape of my neck. I figure about 3 more inches of braid and I can make it all the way around!
Love and light to all of you.

Thank you, Rebekah and Finda! I used bobby pins, two for the tassel and one on the top of my head to keep it from moving. I also used one of those tiny clear elastics on the end of my braid.
Finda, I swear it seems to never move and then when I look at photos, here it is, creeping ever downwards. Maybe because it's so fine it doesn't feel heavy?

This has always been my ultimate goal thread, since I want to grow to hip/tailbone, but I've been too shy to post these last few months despite growing past waist, because I'm shedding continuously and my ends are very very tapered...
Still, I took my end of the year pic, and I think somewhere it does belong here:
https://i.imgur.com/lFI0CIOl.jpg
This last year I did a no-trim experiment, which was kind of fun - I always felt like I was stagnating but that's because I was cutting off my taper. This year I embraced it, and I was amazed to see my thinnest ends reach tailbone length (stretched). Nuts! I'm going to trim back today because the ends are damaged and getting knotty and annoying to bun, but I'll always have the satisfaction of knowing it is possible for me to reach my end goal. I'll try and get there again by the end of 2021, maybe with thicker ends?

Hi everyone! I’m almost at tailbone but need a bit of advice, I’ve noticed lately that my ends (maybe the last few inches of my hair) feel really wispy and my hair just overall seems fluffier than normal? I haven’t trimmed in over a year and a half so I have a hairdresser appt booked for today. I’m hoping a little trim will help but I’m considering trying silicones again to smooth the hair? I’m not sure! All help appreciated!

Hi Erin! I don’t know where you live but my hair loves silicones in the winter; the dry air does a number on it. Definitely worth a shot! Re: the wispies - that’s just your growth rate; a little fairytaling after a year without a trim is natural. :)

Okay so 2 years ago I was at TBL, but the quality of my hair has been disintegrating as a result of two box dies and heat damage from straightening. I was looking at the ends of my hair a few days ago in proper sunlight, and it was bad. I was trying to maintain the ends through occasional trims but it just wasn't doing the job. I finally bit the bullet and cut 5 inches off last night. I'm sad about how short my hair looks, but the ends are so much thicker and healthier, I think it was worth it!

Thank you! I like to save notes my friends give me, and cut outs from my church bulletins :)

Waist has been my goal since joining LHC, but now that I'm here... I want it longer
I'm thinking I'm just going to grow until I can't handle wearing it down anymore, which I'm thinking is hip or tailbone. So I'll aim for tailbone for now! I need to measure where that is on myself to figure out how long it should take, but I'm just happy slowly cruising down now 8)

Everyone's hair is so thick at the ends, I'm worried about posting a photo of mine, it's just at my hips but the bottom third is so wispy. It's probably a lot to do with the fact that it's spider silk fine and I wore it down for so ages, hopefully now I'm bunning or braiding every day it'll thicken up. I should probably maintain but I want to get to tailbone more!

Ah, you just summed that up perfectly for me because that's exactly what happened when I reached waist length. That was the longest I'd ever been too and I doubted that I could grow that long. It's a great length so, yes, everything from there is a bonus!

It's ok! :blossom:
I have thin ends too; I totally understand how you can feel self-conscious about it, but there's really nothing wrong with having thin or fairytale ends (I mean, there's nothing wrong with having any kind of hair, that would be silly).
If you don't feel like maintaining at hip but still would like thicker ends, it's also totally possible to grow to a length you're happy with (for me that was tailbone), and then maintain there.
Finda

Paper.wyrm I emphazise about feeling seIf-conscious, but I second the others. Everyone's hair is different and it's also about priorities. Wispy ends also have some advantages. They make buns a lot more stable for example.

Bokeh, Bat, Bri-Chan Thanks, I'm very excited :) On the matter of calling it: Yes (and no lol). Because of former breakage I have some pretty uneven tapering going on in the last inches, so calling a milestone is relative because I know I will have to cut at some point in the future. But the demarcation line is continuously growing down, so my plan right now is to keep growing until I reach tailbone and then maintain until everything is even. But I have been moving the point where I start cutting from BSL to waist to hip to tbl, so we'll see...

I think 3cm or even 2cm of hair growth per month is quite good. Whereas for most people it’s about 1cm - as Bat has said. What I do know is that the growth rate can be subjected to biological and environmental effects - diet, hormones, season, stress, etc.
In my opinion, I’m a little dubious with claims from products that promote hair growth and if they actually worked, would it also increase hair growth on other parts of the body? If you do decide to try any products, make sure you buy them from trusted sources and let us know the results!

I don't really believe in such products either but I've seen so many good reviews with actual results, it can't hurt to try it myself and see what happens. I just got the product and before I wash I will measure my hair, take a pic and come back in 15 days and then 15 again to show the result!

Calling hip today! :cheer: I reached HL for the first time last September, then chopped 2" in October. I'm now back approximately at my longest length, with a somewhat better hemline. No miracles have occurred - I don't have the stunningly thick ends of some of the ladies in this thread, but I'm happy with them as a reflection of my current lifestyle, in which I enjoy my hair and wear it down a lot!
Will try to take some photos in the next few days. Still experimenting with the texture - the longer my hair gets, the more the parts below BSL want to clump. My scalp loves a BBB or horn comb, but my ends don't. I've had one shiny, smooth, perfect result washing with amla, which I've since failed to replicate. CO-washing similarly variable. I keep a standard shampoo and conditioner around for when I need a predictable result, but dryness is an issue.

I wanted to share my six month growth comparison with microtrims in November, December, and January (about 1/4" each time). On the left was July 28, 2020. On the right is from today, Feb. 1, 2021. It's very close to BCL! I don't think I'll do a microtrim this month, since I think the hem looks a bit better, and I'd really like to hit that milestone. We'll see how I feel about that tomorrow! It's also a bit fluffier since I've been trying to encourage the waves with mixed success.

I keep a standard shampoo and conditioner around for when I need a predictable result, but dryness is an issue.
pisinoe and Sammich, what gorgeous hair you both have. :crush: Don't stress too much about the growth - it'll happen in time. I hope you're proud of your hair and enjoy it at its current beautiful length.
Congratulations! I think the best part is being able to enjoy the hair we have :D
And thank you, sometimes I get too impatient, but I try to enjoy my length as much as possible <3

Oh,I think I'll do the first half no trim challenge and than cut back to bcl and have awesome ends :D Or maybe I will like TBL and maintain there :D Gosh, so many options and I'm so frickin excited!!! Is this how you felt when you hit TBL?!
Edit: my hair always grows faster during the winter so I'm using it to my advantage now, reaching goals and staying away from scissors! And then when summer shed comes, I'll be ready to trim a little without feeling bad for losing length. Whatever happens, I'll be happy maintain BCL/TBL for some time for sure... If the mood strikes I'll grow longer, but I doubt that scenario :)

Sounds solid. Whatever you decide, I think you'll be happy with your hair. :) For me, hitting TBL was more like "finally I'm out of my limbo length" *deep sigh*. I'm finding it kind of hard to rejoice about my hair at the moment. The ends are in a frustrating condition, I'm working on using up sub-par conditioners which don't help the situation, and the length feels meh because I lost a bit to a trim before New Year. But it'll get better, I'm sure. :)

I know how you feel, Yiva. I've been fighting with the urge to trim my ends. My hemline doesn't grow evenly. The u shape helps hide that, but I'm ready to have a blunt hemline again.
I use my sub par conditioners up on the horses, lol. It's nice to have an outlet and not just throw them away or force myself to use them up.

Some of my better pics are taken by someone else, but always in front of a light wall. I try to be in front of a white wall and use the flash setting! Basically I set up my phone to take a pic with flash in 10 secs and position myself in front of the wall and take it!

https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=44423&d=1612639084
This is after wrapping and a bit of combing while it dried, whereas the other photos were basically a hairtyping wash. I prefer the smoother texture and this is how I usually wear my hair and feel most like myself. Feels like it's getting wavier, though, as now it only goes 1b/1c straight if it is combed fairly continuously while drying.

Im courting bcl on 90cm and tbl on 100cm. It may not be exactly like that on my body, idk, I can’t find my tailbone, so I decided to mark it like that. 100cm on me is mid butt and I saw that being tbl on many longhairs :) also, don’t be discouraged classic is a big goal for anyone, you’ll get there. On me BCL is 93, TBL 99 and classic 108, so TBL is mid butt on me too.
The problem is not the wavy-ish texture, it's that it grows slow. In normal condition, it's 1 cm per month at most. For several months now I was prescribed some skin supplements and now it's growing "faster" (1 to 1,5). But after cutting out 2/3 supplements, it seems to grow around 1 cm.

I cant even measure accurately anymore. My ends twist and I can’t seem to get the hang of it. When I measure it turns out sometimes it grows an inch and sometimes nothing. Idk. I just want it to touch the butt when I’m naked :) I’m so looking forward to maintaining like you wouldn’t believe. That’s gonna be a dream ... and I imagine than it’s gonna speed up with growing. Everyone says so. When you hit the goal it seems like it grows faster.. probably cause you don’t want it or expect it to grow longer. I just hope my terminal isn’t shorter than goal :(

Your hair now seems too thick to be close to terminal imho.
About reaching my goal and maintaining, well I don't know how I'll feel. I tend to being bored when my hair looks always the same for so many months or years. But I still have to grow out dyes, so that will be another goal.
In a long term future, I can see myself having everything from 100 to 115 cm. At the same time, I don't know if I'll do a huge cut to remove the most damaged section at some point. Or also to cut all the not-virgin part. Sometimes I think I could do this in a future and rock a shoulder length cut (which I like and I think it looks good on me) but at the same time I hate all the between lengths from like armpit to waist, so it would be difficult to me to grow it again in that scenario.

Idk what to tell you. I am as well with a lot of dye in my hair. Virgin is the next goal anyway. I won’t do anything drastic like trim it off at once and lose a bunch of length. I don’t think I would be able to keep growing after that, the thought of short hair now and the years that I’ll need to grow it virgin TBL is just something I can’t deal with. Mine is not bad quality, it’s just different color. It’s not fried or anything , so I don’t even think in that direction, cutting off all the dyed part. I’m thinking of dyeing dyed hair more my color, cause it’s going off anyway in time that comes... have you tried massages to speed it up?

Hahah everyone says so. And so guess we deserve it, cause most of use spend years in caring and growing phase. It’s nice to think of the rewarding period that follows. You can trim of damaged ends, splits , whatever and not feel like crap cause you are on your goal anyway :)

Oh nooo, I didn’t realise there was waist+ abyss as well, in addition to midback abyss. :D But I guess it makes sense... Waist has been my intermediate goal for a long time and now that I’ve reached it, everything feels a bit... uncertain, unclear. Do I want to grow first and thicken the ends later or maintain or something in between... and, also, it’s a long way from waist to tailbone, like 1,5-2,5 years. And I guess there’s a reason why people tend to get stuck around hip/tb area.

My initial happiness at reaching waist didn't last long, because while I'm lucky that I'm high waisted, this also means a much longer time for the hair to travel down to TBL. It took like 8 months to get to hip, and now no idea how much until TBL haha. I clearly underestimated how long it takes since my growth rate also took a hit in 2020.
I'm using "growth" shampoo to see if it can speed up the process because I'm getting impatient. I really want to hit my goal for my 2 year anniversary here...

Do I want to grow first and thicken the ends later or maintain or something in between... and, also, it’s a long way from waist to tailbone, like 1,5-2,5 years. And I guess there’s a reason why people tend to get stuck around hip/tb area.
Congrats on reaching your intermediate goal! I'll be here for a while, too, snowspot:o I'm guessing it will be about 1 or 1.5 years until the longest bits arrive at TBL for me. I'm personally not planning to trim, but I haven't trimmed since I joined here. My hair is not particularly prone to splits anymore since I wear it up a lot. It has been very low maintenance lately, and I've really embraced the benign neglect. :) :) Happy growing, and I'm sure you'll arrive at TBL eventually, whether you decide to trim or not.
ETA: Cestlavie- in your avatar, your hair *looks* like it is almost at hip already! 6 months is not so long at all.

I have the same issue, reached waist last October. I'm quite high waisted but hip will take 6-8 months I'm afraid. Now it seems there hasn't been any growth but I'm trying not to think about it that much :p
Welcome, AshtangiPNW :)
Man can I relate to that. I feel like I've reached a stall every time I measure my hair, and it makes me super unmotivated :'). But last year I felt the same way and went from BSL to hip length hair...

Gonna wash my hair now with the growth shampoo. Hair is 80.5cm right now.
I marked with a sharpie on my dress so it’s easier later to compare.

Let’s see if it grows more than a cm in 15 days...
It's been 13 days. I lost my phone, but my cousin kindly took a picture for me :)

It looks longer than it actually should, probably because my cousin is almost 10cm smaller than me? And the person who took the first one was way taller. But it grew 2cm exactly. To me it's not visible at all and i did not notice any difference until I put the dress with the marker on. I look forward to the final month result.

My usual growth used to be 3cm a month. Last year maybe due to stress and other factors, it went down to 2cm a month. It has grown 2cm in half that with it, which makes me hopeful (altho irl it's not obvious to me at all). So I guess it has doubled my growth? I'll post a final update at the end of the month.

Dang that's insane to me! It cost me 3€ with conversion only. I'm coming back to Europe next month (most likely), and I'm probably going to buy a few bottles to bring with me. If you're interested, I'm willing to ship them to you.

Bri+Banoo I understand the abyss thing. Although it’s my own damn fault I’m stuck anywhere, becaus I can’t keep myself away from scissors!
I did a check the other day, and I trimmed my hair 4 times last year! It’s a gods gift and a wonder I went from mid back to hip!
Srsly I need to shape up, cause if I do it this year as well I will literally never get to my goal length. Since I’m one of those freaky ppl who prefer solid hem over length, whenever I see my ends thinning out I trim off. And than I wonder why can’t I reach TBL/ BCL. Well.... It’s better for ppl like me who love to trim to hit goal and than maintain monthly than trim every so often and be stuck.

Where is the very smallest part of your waist? Is it 7.5” from the base of your shoulder blades / bra strap line to the small of your waist? All of our proportions are so different!
(I always ignored mbl as it felt like the cheerful halfway point between bsl & waist)
