Here’s a half-up from today - Thursday I’m getting a trim so might need to update this post after! I’m excited to thicken up my ends but dang, there’s just so much distance between hip and classic.

Looks really nice!
I'd like to join this threat with my hair being around hip. And yes it's totally my impression as well that it's gonna take forever to reach classic. Waist to hip was sort of quick, classic will be about another 10 inch and I'll also probably need to trim a bit until then ;)

The easiest way is to take a photo from the back - I use the timer on my phone - and if it reaches the smallest part of your waist, you’re there! Some folks count their length stretched if they have a lot of wave or curl, and others in its natural state, up to you. :)

@pisinoe loving the shine and wave!
@Elliandra - sounds like a Disc Bun! I rarely wear that one, but I feel like I ought to wear it more. I usually alternate strands when I wrap the disc bun now that I'm at a length where it wraps a good few times - it really anchors for me now.
I've been liking the Nessa bun lately, it's holding well for me. That one might work well for you, Elliandra, it's named for Haatraum as she invented it, and her hair is thick too. I've been wearing mostly hairforks lately but I'm thinking I might try more braided buns and see if they keep hold of my sticks any better. My hair is in a phase where it likes to spit out sticks, and is refusing to stay in a nautilus bun or L-infinity, both of which I'd love to wear more often if they'd just be stable. Will re-evaluate in a few inches and see if my hair feels like cooperating then!
I'm back at waist length now, hoping for hip by the end of the year. Will re-evaluate my hem at that point, possibly do some trimming or maintaining around that length before moving on to tailbone, which I am hoping to hit sometime before the end of 2021 (but haven't done the math yet to know how feasible that is. A problem for a later time)
So I'm pretty sure I'm hip stretched but I never dry my hair straight these days so my (sorta) wurls are eating up a little visual length. I've been primarily wearing forks and l-infinity buns lately, and they're definitely staying stable. Glad to have gotten through that rough spot ^^ from back in July.
By the time the year ends I should be solidly hip, at which point I have to decide between a good trim and/or maintaining and microtriming for a bit. I have not been babying my ends as much as I should and they are a little dry/grabby, but not too bad. Have made a resolution for the rest of the year to actually oil my ends and wear it up more often to help protect it - I've been wearing it down at least half the time and with the weather finally starting to cool down, that'll have to change.
Anyway here's a length shot, thumbs at hip. BCL is approximately halfway between my thumbs and the bottom of my shirt, with tbl around where my shirt ends. Picture cuts off at classic.

Hello everyone,
I also like to join this thread, although I'm not sure if I really am at waist. I think so. How do you know?
If you put your hands at the smallest part of your waist (or wrap a belt around it, or a string, etc) that's where I personally count waist length as. I measure to that spot from the front of my hairline down the back, and compare my length measurement for my actual hair to see if I'm technically at that length. But I don't consider a milestone for me to be personally "solid" until it's visual in pictures with my natural texture, which usually takes an extra couple of months to distinguish for me.
Some people call stretched, some not, some call it when their longest hair reaches the milestone, others when the majority of their ends reach that spot.... just whatever personally feels right to you (:

Depending on your hair type, I'd reckon roughly 8-9 months or so. Hair appears to grow very slow the longer it gets, I've noticed. The closer it is to your face, the more pronounced the growth.
I'm past waist length but not quite at hip! It's a long journey for sure!

Thank you for your replies everyone, I will make a picture tomorrow. Now I washed my hair again(!) so it’s wet and not in a good state for a picture or measuring. My hair is getting really dirty because I’m sanding wood in my house, I normally wash once every 2 weeks but now I wash 3 times a week. I’m a bit worried about the damage with al the washing, although I CO wash now, just to get the dirt out.

Technically I think I have an inch to go before I match my pre-chop length, (33.5+" I think, I'm about 32.5-33" now) but it was so thin/damaged that I think it was breaking/losing length at the end. In two weeks it'll be 3 years since my big chop!

My goal is tailbone, although we will see how I feel about that once I reach it. People have been known to want to keep growing haha! Next year, I plan on growing and regularly trimming a bit to get rid of layers, and I'll probably start maintaining at hip once I reach it, to get a blunt V/U hemline.
What's yours?

Thanks all! It's certainly been a journey! I didn't realize until I put that collage together just how big the difference was from then to now! I went from i/ii to a solid upper ii thickness, and my hair texture is so pretty now (not that I ever encourage it, I'm still quite lazy/benign neglecting it). Could still use a little trimming at the ends probably, I've only been trimming once every 4-9 months and only done two bigger trims, so I don't want to let it fairytale too much. I prefer a thicker hem now that I've gotten to experience that (:
@Siv, I always took a ton of photos in order to pick out one where my hair looked it's best! But reality wasn't quite what it looked. I loved this length last time I was here, but my hair was so fragile and damaged that it was quite frustrating and sad to care for at the time. Pretty sure whenever I mentioned that I was frustrated with it people couldn't really understand why, because I didn't really show how bad it had gotten. I still have a couple other photos that show the damage really well, from around the few weeks before I big chopped, and they were eye-opening to me how bad it had gotten! That, combined with not enjoying my hair very much, "dealing" with it rather than looking forward to it, is why I went for the big chop. I'm so much happier this time around!
Also maybe your hair just had it's growth all at once? I grew an inch in July but then it didn't grow again until mid-September, so I was baffled a bit. Evens out to about 6-7" a year though pretty consistently, even if it spurts and stops!
@Wo, yeah I chopped Nov 18, 2017. Nuts! I did a couple big hiatuses on instagram (and a big one on LHC too, got busy with life), so there's gaps in my hair journey that nobody got to see. Crazy how time flies though.

Also, I finally reached WL curly and approaching hip when stretched.(I'll post a pic when I finally get a good one)

I've never been happier with my hair in my life! Though I don't know how long I'll eventually grow my hair, I know I'll never cut it shorter than waist.

Time will tell! I'm not expecting classic by the end of next year but that's because I am likely going to be trimming several inches throughout the year. Do you happen to know about how many inches between hip and classic for you ?
OMG, that is such a big difference from when you started. Nothing wrong with thin(ner) hair (my mom has about that "thickness"), but if it's not what you are used to it can be very tough!
And I *love* the color! :D
My unhappiness with my hair before had nothing to do with the thickness of it, but rather the damage/ill health of the hair. I'd never had healthy hair longer than BSL before LHC so it wasn't until recently that I had the context to realize how much breakage/thinning I'd had after bleaching it. It didn't feel good or handle the way my hair does when it's healthy, and was getting to the point where no matter how gentle I was with it, I couldn't keep up with the breakage. Much happier with the condition now!
And thank you! I've had the split dye for a year now, and I'm quite happy with the color. It's been a year and a half-ish since my last henna/cassia gloss, so the first 9-10 inches on the right half is my natural color, while the ends are ever so slightly redder. I'm looking forward to eventually trimming all that out, since I don't have the will to upkeep henna regularly, but it hasn't damaged the hair and is so close enough in color to my roots that I'm not bothered by it staying around until it eventually gets trimmed off (:
I'm new and just wanted to pop in and say I'm almost there!!:) 4 more inches.and hoodlum to everyone on their goals
Good luck to you as well! That's not far off at all, less than a year (: LOL @ that autocorrect though
Popping back in here to say hi! to everybody and check in even though I'm not officially in this category.
Oh my gosh wispe! I have a rl friend whose hair is thinner like in your first picture and thinks their hair is just like that and can't grow long. Your pictures are pure proof that it is possible <3
And in the first picture that was actually pretty damaged, thinner hair, and I still got it to around hip (: Healthy thinner hair can get much longer, I know we've had some members around here who have hair in the i to i/ii category that have made it to even more extreme lengths! Definitely possible (:

Hello everyone, just wanted to say that everyone's pictures are so inspiring and beautiful!
Also, I finally reached WL curly and approaching hip when stretched.(I'll post a pic when I finally get a good one)
I don't know about the rest of you, but I love feeling my long hair down my back or catching a glimpse of it in a mirror (call me vain if you want) but I feel so elegant with my hair long and flowy.
I've never been happier with my hair in my life! Though I don't know how long I'll eventually grow my hair, I know I'll never cut it shorter than waist.
It’s not vain! It’s so good to feel confident and happy with your hair; those feelings leak out into so many other parts of life. Excited to see your pictures!
Guys I meant goodluck not hoodlum.. I'm sorry!
Lololol that is an autocorrect delight! Excited for you to be at hip and on your way to classic. :)

OK, then we have the same road to go and we can support each other!
I didn't measure exactly but I'm pretty tall for a woman. I just realize now that I'm not going to make tailbone in a year, unless I don't trim + have a supernatural growspurt.
Its going to take 1,5 year at least.

Yes! I'm excited for that phase too! Imagine having goal length and your nape area is the same thickness as your ends (swoon) :D

Yes they are, but I feel the same about them. Yes they stall my progress length wise, but I am very clear on my quality before quantity policy...Some are lucky enough not to have splits and fairy tale ends, I unfortunately am not. And when you take my overall thickness in consideration, you can see that if it's not thick all over, it doesn't look good. :( So I'm trying to keep that balance between keeping the length and having good hemline..It's not easy...I could be at BCL now if I haven't trimmed. But you know, I'll get there :)

I honestly don't know,7 to 10 cm I think? If I hadn't trimmed I would be there. My last trim was me trying to make a U shape with Feyes method, and it didn't work so good,so I had to chop a bit more than I wanted to even it out..I lost there 3-4 cm for sure...Before that I also had my mom take an 2 cm off, before that my bf 3cm ... In the end, I'm happy with my ends now, and the U shape is also better for me than cross cut :) So in general, not bad result for so many chops :D
Yeah, the progress is quite visible to the naked eye, its a long way between bsl and hip :) I will post the compared side to side pic in the ends of the year :)

I need 2 cm with stretched hair, but I'll trim 1/1.5 cm at the beginning of the year and, plus, I think I'll call it when I'll be there with my hair in its natural state.. So also if I look so close, I'll probably be there in March more or less. Or I don't know, I'll see how it looks and I'll decide.
Probably we'll reach the milestone together, who knows :)

I'm going to join this thread, I had my hair stunted close to waist for about 3 years. Due to improper care, so everytime I would trim I wouldn't gain any length.
When I did start to maintain better due to my outdoors job, I went in for a trim and my usual hairdresser of 4+ years was gone. The woman who replaced her took off about 5 inches and charged me an extra $10 then the usual rate. I bought haircutting scissors and decided to never go back.
That was about a year ago and I was at MBL after the haircut. Now I am just past waist length again. Gradual oiling and hot oil treatments 1x a week has greatly improved my hair and breakage. I have highly porous hair so even though it's been virgin for years now, it is prone to splitting and breaking easily.
Hoping to reach (solid) hip by July next year! And tailbone won't be far off from that :)

Congratulations, on WL+ length, fiords! Your hair is really beautiful. What type do you think it is? Your texture in your photos reminds me of mine, but finer and a bit wavier.
I also have naturally porous hair. Could you talk a bit more about your gradual oiling and hot oil treatments? By gradual oiling do you mean that after a wash, you put a little oil in each day?

Oh that's so exciting! I feel you with the sharp V, I'm planning to start maintaining soon too to even things out a bit. I think a thicker hairline makes the overall hair appear longer.
I'm now at the point where my hair is just becoming the longest it's ever been, and when I look at old pictures of when my hair was at waist, it looks longer than it does now, because now most of my hair isn't at waist, just my longer layers. I'm still planning to have a soft V or U hemline, but definitely softer, and without all the layers. How about you? I like a gentle U best, so I'll be maintaining and trimming a little at a time to get there. I agree that I helps the hair look longer. Funny, that was actually what my last salon cut was in Aug 2019. I don't know how much the change has been because of different growth rates across my head or just more damage on the sides. I didn't do any trimming until a couple of weeks ago other than S&D on the splits.

Anyone else feeling this or is it just me though?

Welcome, notnotevil!
The longest my hair has been is HL, and I can't say it's ever given me neck pain during normal operation - but perhaps TBL will be where it starts happening!
The one time I have experienced neck pain, however, is after applying a huge amount of cassia to my scalp and hair and wrapping it into a bun balanced on top of my head underneath a shower cap. At that point I really felt the weight of it, and it was quite uncomfortable for a couple of hours.
I think the issue is a combination of muscular strength - I share your hope that the neck will get used to the weight in time! - and positioning of the hair. After all, most of us are able to carry quite large weights on our heads comfortably if well-positioned, especially after some practice. Interested to hear others' experiences.

It's not an issue for me, but I think that is largely due to the fact that hair grows slow so your body has time to adjust. I imagine it would be more of an issue if you had very long and very thick hair. I feel the weight when I wrap my hair coming out of the shower but even then it's very manageable.

Thanks for the warm welcome :) I think it (the neck pain) is a combination of working on my computer that is detrimental to my entire spine/muscle health (a few workouts a week don't seem to reverse hours of sitting looking at the screen.. :(), and the weight of my hair which exacerbates the issues (which is somewhere around 90 g if the rough weighing on my kitchen scale is to be trusted lol). You could certainly have thicker and longer hair than me but not have it affect you like that; and indeed cutting my hair eased only some of the pain. Seems that the hair isn't the beginning nor the end of the problem and solving it would take some lifestyle changes... don't you just hate it when fixing a problem takes effort? Lol
And yeah it's the worst when you have stuff in your hair, especially hennaing, I always get a towel and lean against something for those few hours. Thankfully the color takes in just 4hrs!
Anyway..! :o Some beautiful progress pics here to inspire! And congratulations to you all who are hitting milestones :) here's me for now... I will be evening out that triangle at the ends (it's more unruly than it looks here lol!) as I go, so even though I look well in, I'll be here for a while

Oh wow it grows quickly! I was maintaining at those lengths as well, but not by choice haha trying to get fuller ends and grow it out in a healthy manner since it was so damaged. Well done you! The ends look great!
notnotevil if weekly workouts aren't working, what about a morning yoga routine? Neck hygiene and shoulder hygiene and building strength may help. For example doing abdominal exercises on the floor but never crunching your neck, instead pull your shoulder blades down and back, and focus on keeping stability and your shoulders off the ground using your core. Little tweaks like that support and build all those small structural muscles. Yoga is great for that. If your hair is weighing down too much cut a few inches off and work on postural muscles, especially while working! That will give your body time to adjust while your hair grows out. Hope that helps!

I do light yoga, anywhere from daily to twice a week, for the last 5 years, and I'm certain I'd be in a worse place if I didn't so you are right to suggest it! I started incorporating some other workouts, mostly dancing and rowing on a rowing machine and occasionally I run. But, I also sit the all the rest of the day, maybe 10 hours, even longer than I've been exercising... Might not be enough movement to counter that :( I'll try giving the neck/shoulder muscles more focus in my practices :)

Ah, wearing my hair in crowntype styles def could help!! I must learn to do and pin them properly, as right now I put it in a bun in the middle and forget it but that seems to be max neck strain..

Beautiful, baanoo and notnotevil! :o
I have noticed that a bun does get rather heavy after wearing it for some hours, but so far I've made it without any pain... If I am wearing a braid over my shoulder my shoulder will be a bit sore at the end of a day, but I should learn to braid behind my back.

Thanks baanoo! I'm thinking of trimming around 2 cm every 4 months, so that I hold on to half of the new growth. But I'm flexible and open to changing my mind as I go along.
I don't think I have the patience to microtrim 0.5 cm every month, nor do I have the heart to let it grow too much and then get a bigger chop haha. But I think hip length is a flattering one generally, and so it's time to maintain/slowly grow because removing some of these layers will make a big difference in how I enjoy my hair.

shaluwm_agape Your hair looks really beautiful :)
I had a cool hair related encounter, today:) I was meeting a friend who has waist to hip length hair since I have known her. Her hair is super sturdy and she doesn't need to put much effort in maintaining the length, even though she uses heat and colors it. I have always been a bit envious of that;) She knows I'm letting my hair grow and that it has been a struggle for me, but I usually have it up or braided when we meet.
On my way to her place my scarf pushed the fork out of my hair, so I arrived with open hair. And even though my scarf and my coat's hoodie were in the way her first words were: "Oh my god your hair has grown so long. It's longer than mine now, we need to do a length comparison at once!" It was awesome how excited she got, because I don‘t have that many people in my live who find long hair interesting or even desirable. Also, I was sure I'd get a comment because of my tapered ends. The friend is super stylish, so I was a bit embarrassed to show her the ends, but she‘s not judgy and only mentioned that they have different lengths but still look good. With so few real life social interactions right now that was super nice :)
I think I might reach bcl by the end of the year. With my very ends at least. The non-see-through line has now reached the waistband of my jeans. At the moment it‘s constantly overcast and I can‘t produce a picture with good light exposure. So I will do that the next weekend that has some sunshine ;)

I'm at waist+ and my ends are looking pretty solid right now. I got rid of 99% of layers with regular trims, so I think about growing to hip or longer again. To be completely honest covering my roots with deposit dye helps because I no longer think about trimming all of the henna. Letting it grow and having it all one color is much less stressful. Having tailbone length with such fine hair would be something.

I'm finally back after not having a computer to use! I've kinda neglected my hair, not really doing any treatments, not remembering to wash it, etc. Starting today I'm going to be doing a winter growth challenge, hopefully, it will help my hair recover from this sub-par treatment. I'm considering buying some "dye" from Lunar Tides to experiment with a more ashy brown-gray color, the lightness of my roots makes me look like I'm balding. Honestly, I have no clue where this blonde-ish hair is coming from since my parents both have black hair, but I'm not a huge fan of it right now. Maybe I just have to suck it up lol. All this to say I'll be back on here posting, hopefully getting my hair to solid waist length by 2021.

BCL is roughly at the bottom hem of my shirt, about 4" away from where I am now.
In between those two pictures above I had my spouse trim the point of my U a bit, and I'm pretty happy with my hemline at the moment! I don't have very many splits at all when I S&D, mainly I get a fairy knot every week or so. I know I have been getting some breakage in the shower, but I'm working on breaking the habit of pulling on shed hairs while washing; sometimes they come out easily and sometimes they are snarled with other hairs and those snap off. Other than that I think my mechanical damage is pretty minimal at this point.
Going to do the no trim challenge for next year; I'll try to do the full year but I'm just committing to the first half for now since who knows what my postpartum shed is going to look like. That should start in July or so if it's anything like the one I had with my first child.

I know pulling it to the front makes it hard, but I can never seem to get a good photo from behind! My hair is wider than my waist and hips, so it makes it impossible to see any markers! My hair is larger than my torso and so my waist just disappears behind it, making it nearly impossible to actually see where my hair hits! That coupled with the fact that I have proportionally short legs makes my hair look very different from behind photos than how long my hair actually is. I will probably have to take a photo of it from behind when it is wet so that you can actually tell there's a torso under all of its frizz!

lol! I didn't mean it as a criticism, just that I know how hard it is to tell how much growth I've had when I pull it to the front. Frizz be damned, a contrasting background will work wonders! (and a form-fitting contrasty top; I swear a wear a tank and sweats for length shots way more than is reasonable)

Hello everyone... has been ages since I was here. I’m still working towards tbl by Christmas time. I have around a cm to go, which means I shall probably decide to join the tbl to classic group at the start of the new year. I have ten cm of growth in that group, however long it takes. After the stretch from waist, that seems like it won’t take long.

Hi everyone! I have some racers that have finally intersected my belt (consistently, in all photos, regardless of posture :) ). So, I've decided to call waist.

Looks like you had great success with your trim. It's lovely! I'm using Feye's method for the u shaped hem, but so far, I haven't trimmed much. Only the very point of my sharp v. I'm a little nervous how well I will get on with it once I have more of the length to include in the shaping. Your great cut gives me hope!

First time I did any self trim ever! As you can see on the first photo, my hemline deteriorated badly, I had a blog rant about it. I had a big shed and looks like I lost most of my long hairs, so my usually good hem went to this all of a sudden. I had to do something! So looking at the pic, I figured the appearance of my hair will be much better if my hair was U instead of straight, and I won't lose that much length...You know how she says in instructions if you want deeper U tilt head to floor. I did that. Having a straight hemline means that when I split my hair half way, and put hair on front, that some hairs look shorter and others longer. I hated that because the long ones looked so dry and ratty.. I felt such a pleasure when I chopped them off.. You have no idea :D I repeated the proces few days ago, but this time instead of going blindly by feeling I actually took a measuring tape to see how much is 1cm and I trimmed half centimeter and half from the V so 1 in total..And it looks great to be honest...Knowing how it looked before, I'm happy it was worth it...:)

Ah that explains it! :) It was almost magic. LOL! ;) The U is very pretty on your hair, IMO!
You'll save so much money too. And besides, you have the option and that is even more important (if you don't go crazy on your hair and chop it) of getting *exactly* what you want. No hairdressers trimming more than you want anymore! And that is such a great feeling.

Almost, when I pull my wet hair really straight under the shower it reaches bcl just about, but the ends are so see through, I can't visually confirm yet;)
So maybe by the end of the month or the next.
Do you trim yourself?
One reason I just had one trim in the last three years is my fear of making a mistake while trying to cut it myself or alternatively having communication issues with a hairdresser ;)

Yes, I trim by myself. I fear hairdresser because I don't want to lose too much length. But also, my hair isn't easy to deal with, and hairdressers always have struggles with my untamed tangles. This before it was as damaged as now... They would probably end causing some breakage. It seems like I'm the only one to know how to do!
I use Feye's method. I used to cut straight across, but the last time I did it a V shape, probably this time will be more like an U.
But in the future, with healthier and (I hope) easier hair I'd like to have a professional haircut.

Hi everyone. It's been fun reading the last few pages and catching up with everyone's progress. So many beautiful heads of hair.
My very longest hairs are just touching tbl in the shower, so I'll probably call it by new years. Then I'll probably trim. I'm finding the length is starting to get to be a bit much for me. Just heavy and getting in the way. I'm just trying to decide if I'll just trim a couple of inches or if I'll cut closer to five inches, also if I'll cut in January or wait until my lhc anniversary at the beginning of February.

Congratulations on hip! I'm also there for the first time ever, and have had up and down days with how I feel about it. I'm excited to have it this long, but feel like I had sacrificed a little of the health of it for length, which is why I've decided to microtrim until I like the hem more. So far so good. I suggest you do the two week rule. Take two weeks to think about any change before you jump in. In the meantime, experiment with updos. Hip makes a lot of more intricate styles possible. In September I tried a new updo every day for a month. It was a ton of fun, and it forced me out of the rut I was in. Good luck!

Thank you so much! Btw, is the three bun hairstyle in your avatar pic perhaps inspired by Rey from Star Wars...? I couldn't help but wonder :P
And I'd say to give yourself a one month deadline or at least two weeks! If you still feel like that then, it's worth considering, otherwise maybe it's just a fleeting thought. Every time I think about chopping off my hair I remind myself how much time, thoughts, energy and money I invested into it and how much longer I want to grow it out and it goes away lol.

Thanks, I'll give myself time anyway indeed. I was planning on not trimming until Feb, as that's when I got my last haircut, and I think it would be fun to see a growth comparison. Hopefully the urge will be gone by then. At some point I do plan on going back to APL, but I wanted to grow longer first :).
The 3-bun hairstyle is inspired by jane_marie actually! But I googled Rey from Star Wars and I see why you would think of that, it looks very cool!

I recently reached Waist Length, so I’m moving to this thread. ☺️ I’m going to maintain for a few months to thicken the hemline. After that I’ll continue microtrimming regularly too keep the ends at least somewhat fresh, so it’s possible I’ll be on this thread a looooong time. :D Right now the HL is about 10 cm and TBL 25 cm away, so it might take a few years with trims.

Welcome SnowSpot! Glad to have you here! Congratulations on reaching waist!

Thank you Finda!
Thank you dear!! I realized I posted a pretty bad pic lol. I took another one now. Yeah, I guess it really might be hip despite it being a bit damp and not fully dry and straight yet.

I’m so excited to be part of this team. I’m either at WL or close to it. Need help from you all to confirm, once I can post pictures. I am so grateful for everything I have learned from TLHC. My hair really took a turn this fall as it reached a length I had zero experience with. Without the wisdom and knowledge shared on TLHC I wouldn’t have known what to do and would have cut my hair. Now, I know to really pamper my ends, alternate all-hair washes with scalp only wash, wear protective styles in day, start a hair supplement, use jojoba frequently on my ends, and use coney products when needed for their protection from dryness and tangling - they don’t seem to hurt me, at least not yet. These are the things I have begun since entering the WL category.

Still hanging out here (: I'm pretty solidly at hip now, even though my ends like to be juuust wavy enough that it doesn't really look it.
Have been wearing my hair up a lot more and oiling my ends on a more regular basis lately, but my ends are still a little dry and tangling a little. I think I'll be trimming a little at the end of the year (am in the 6-month no trim challenge so I have two more weeks left before I can trim). I like my U-cut, but wondering if I should go shallower or stick with a deeper U. I feel like a shallow U will help the ends look a little thicker, especially since my hair is wavy at the ends and doesn't lay neat. Thoughts ? I don't have and don't plan on doing layers. Right now the sides of my U go up to about waist length, I usually cut it with some combo of feyes and spidermom's trim methods.
@Sunseed - welcome! I too found that at about waist is when I had to switch up my routine. Especially for me, adding cones back in (into conditioners, and leave-ins) has been extremely helpful past waist length.
@Snowspot - welcome as well! I think the microtrim and maintain routine is a good idea (: It might take a bit longer but it'll be nice the whole way there.

Hello, wispe! Thanks for the welcome! I think your hair and hemline are beautiful. It looks carefree, natural, and so healthy. I think the moderate U shape is very flattering for the wavy ends. Absolutely lovely! My hair seems to be a similar texture to yours (on the finer side, but lots of it?) and your photos have inspired me. Yeah, my hair’s needs changed so suddenly when I reached WL. It really blindsided me because nothing of my old routine worked and I was really confused as to what happened. I was going to have to cut my hair, but thank goodness I found TLHC and now I’m happily on my way TBL!

Thanks (: Yeah, sounds like we're similar! My hair is very fine, but I do have lots of it. I'm upper end of ii thickness now, but it can compact down quite a bit when it's smoother. I'm at least 1c/2a, but my hair is fine and light so any product I try to use to enhance the curl tends to look greasy and heavy on me, pulls the waves out. When I let it just be wavy it looks much fuller I think (: And yeah, I totally feel you on your old routine not working well after waist! I've been here twice, the first time my hair was extremely bleach-damaged and eventually I did chop it off, and this time it's much healthier, and my routine has had to change both times after I hit waist.
Edited to say, based on your profile picture, I'd say we're pretty similar for sure!

Hair is 78cm right now. Tailbone is at 90cm. I’ll either be there in 4 months or 60 months. I asked to check classic just in case and it’s at 110cm??? That’s way too much hair for me. So I guess tailbone it is. Now it’ll depend on whether I’ll trim a little before or after only...

A bit of an update but it seems my hair has reached the length of that part of the hip that sticks out in the front. I tried to take a photo of it using my hand to mark that length but I couldn't get my hair to sit right, the ends are bending up taking a bunch of length off and it wouldn't stay put in my back  Should I call hip length?

wispe, I think your gentle U looks really lovely. I especially like how it plays so nicely with your waves. So freespirited!
Sunseed, welcome! I also had to change up my routine at waist. For one, my hair seemed to stop growing and just getting more and more damage from wearing it down. Protective styles definitely helped there. In the last few weeks I've changed to WCC, with LOC post wash. My goodness, what a transformative experience that has been. I never realized how dry my hair was getting. Now I am having way fewer split ends and my hair looks much healthier overall.

Beautiful hair Lucy, congrats on hip!
I just trimmed my hair. I was planning on waiting until Feb, and maintain at hip to grow out layers.
But I had a bad day, and I've been feeling really frustrated with my hair lately and had been thinking of cutting back to APL (which suits me great). So I decided that instead, I can trim just a bit to freshen my ends and I just did that.
I took 2 cm off my longest layers and oh wow, what a difference it made! My ends look twice as thick, and my hair is overall looking thicker and healthier. I didn't expect to be so impressed with a 2cm trim. Even though I broke my plans, I am so happy for this trim. I'm still at WL+ atm, and plan on maintaining here for a while instead of waiting for HL. I just want to enjoy my hair and apparently I hate my layers more than I want the extra length ;)

Lucy congratulations on Hip!
I changed my mind for the next trim.. The plan was to cut an inch in less than 2 weeks, but I thought to wait until spring instead and then trim all back to fresh bcl. Is it a good plan? It seems more fascinating to me than trimming my fresh new milestone.
However, I tried to measure it. I pointed bcl at 93 cm, and now, dry and brushed before washing it seems like 93,2/93,3 but it still seems not enough hair... mm... Probably I'm just in the can-I-call-it phase. I think I'll give it one week or two.

I think your plan is really good. But I think if you are going to do that, you should consider a dusting through the Botton 6 inches of your hair just for maintenance. You do you! But if I was waiting longer than a year, I typically at least then make sure to dust once just to prevent excess damage. :)

This thread is me! I am between waist and tailbone, coming up on hip. Hopefully I will have hip by end of next year? Then if I am REALLY lucky classic by the end of 2022?

I think it sounds like a sound plan. Is your profile picture current? Then your ends look pretty great, still. Maybe it makes sense to stray from a set schedule when a cut is not necessary yet or the goal changes?

My last trim was in late June. I haven't thought about dusting! That could be an idea...

My profile picture was taken in early July if I'm not wrong... anyway, something like 2 weeks after the last trim. I'm waiting for a good hair day to take a new one...
The fact is, and I don't know how it can be visible in photos, it's way more damaged than it looks. And I feel like there is no point in trimming less than 1.5 inch ... So I don't now how much difference 3 extra months could do...

Ah, do the ends tangle a lot or do you notice the damage going up the hair?
I usually set a goal for myself and when the tapered part of my hair is well past that point I cut back to it. (And then I move that line down without actually cuttung ;)) But I need a hairdresser to do the cut so I want to have a distinct point up to which it's okay to cut.
Also, my hair salon offers this version of S&D where they twist strands of your hair and then cut the damaged tips off. I had that done the last time and it worked wonders and made my hair a lot easier to comb with only loosing minimal length. But now, with the salons closed again and, before that, not being allowed to cut dry hair, I might need to wait a while longer.
In three months your hair is probably gonna grow 1.5 inch at the very least? Then you'd be where your are now, as long as the damage doesn't move up. Is the damage super annoying for you? Then I would trim now. Don't you want to go back to pre bcl? Then I'd wait and see how the ends looks in a month.
