@Swan maiden you're hair looks absolutely stunning!
@Groovy Nanny thanks for the wonderful story and great you're growing your hair longer. I wish for myself a long long braid when I reach a respectable age.

I am back here since a long time.. my hair has been TBL for a couple of years. But due to the hot weather this summer, the fact that it hurts to put my long hair up in a bun and the need to let go of some old stuff emotionally...made me kinda scissor happy *shame on me*
So, I am joining the WL to Tailbone group and hope I will grow back the lost length in no time.

Congrats!! I have never been TBL before, and I can't wait. As I am nearing 50 yrs old, it is so great to see other long hair lovers over 50! Such an inspiration.

I’m over 50! I’ll hit tbl this coming year, I’m abt 1 inch from BCL!

I have finally reached tailbone length, after 2 years of trying to grow. I hit a stall and then realized my hair was the exact length as my countertop gas stove. Duh! So I started keeping my hair pinned up in the kitchen and have reached my goal. I have loved watching everyone growing and supporting each other, but it is time for me to go on to the next growth thread. Good luck to you all and hugs! Bye.......

Yes :) It was a goal. Reaching a goal still means something, even if not to your satisfaction. The point is you reached it, and you’ll be able to reach it again :) Last I recall, you were about to call TBL. Or am I mistaken? (Wouldn’t be the first time!) Have you reached it already?

Congratulations Ylva! Like has already been said, you've done it once, you can do it again!

I'm currently in the mindset that whilst I'm aiming for TBL, and am very much looking forward to getting there, I'm reasonably happy with the length I have now so I'm content with a slow crawl to TBL if regular microtrimming is needed to keep my ends looking good. I'll be miserable if my ends get too bad and I do nothing just to gain length.

Hmm, still think I've got a way to go before the mane feels "long" thanks to only being 5ft - although I do have quite a long torso this is paired with unfortunately short legs.

I'm calling BCL too! Even though I'm barely there, still, I count it :D I'm gonna have an S&D session and a light dusting in about 2 weeks (shouldn't affect the length).

It's the longest my hair has ever been! Ever! I'm also happy to finally be in the "butt" region, I'm really tired of having "back" length hair. BCL is the first length that sorta feels long. Not long enough, of course, but not boringly average anymore.

I plan to maintain BCL for the entire 2019. My ends are driving me nuts. They're reasonably healthy, but so insanely tapered for some reason! Maybe it's the stress-related shed I had last year, maybe it's breakage because of cotton pillowcases and being an active sleeper... I don't know. I just hope it's not terminal. Maybe if all goes well I'll allow my hair to grow a bit more to TBL during the second half of 2019, who knows.

Congratulations AmaryllisRed ! Lovely hair :)

I've been away from LHC for ages. I was just reaching hip length the last time I posted, now I'm pretty sure my hair is at least BCL when not stretched.
However I've basically been neglecting it during the last months, so it is dry and full of splits.
I have fine strands, some are super-fine and almost translucent, others are coarser (M) (and interestingly have a darker, red color), and most are "in-between", regular F strands ...
But overall it feels like they all love to split and break.
I guess rubbing against clothing all day or being put in a bun with a pencil (that could snag some strands) is quite rough on them ...

Anyway, my ends feel quite dry and rough, so I'm going to trim off about 3 cm.

I don't really have an urge to grow longer than that right now, I'm quite happy to have reached a "new length", my hair definitely feels and looks longer now that it is below hip length :)

Happy growing everyone !

My hair is about one inch past WL and I just trimmed a few days ago. WL was my first big goal and I'm excited to be closer to TBL. My hair was TBL last when I was 18. I'm hoping to make it to TBL around this time next year hopefully. I think it is about 6 inches or so away. I don't know if I will grow beyond TBL but I'll think about it. dagny ~ you go for it girl!

I stopped coloring at age 50 for the first time in 20 years after a stylist fried my hair and I had to chop off a foot and had them try to match my roots...never to color again.

It was so freeing....what a great way to celebrate my milestone!

But sadly I went from waist to CBL and then chin.....for the next 11 years; thinking I HAD to stay short as I was silvering and being 'middle aged'.

It wasn't until I was 61 and miserable with curling silver I had no idea how to care for, that I searched online in the hoped of some inspiration and voila.....LHC :joy:

The girls here gave me the tools to care for my hair type and the courage to grow it out, even in the face of doubtful and discouraging comments back home.

That was 5 years ago and I am never going back.... having found my long hair niche....my hope/plan is to live/die as a long hair :eyebrows:

You are a gorgeous 'soon to be 50' gal...wear it proudly.... and do you :cheer:

I loved hearing about your hair journey!!
My sons are all cheering me on to grow my hair longer (and my mom had knee-length hair when she was 58yrs old) so, thankfully I have them to keep me motivated...and all of the lovely-haired locks on this site for inspiration!!! :joy:

Kat-Rinnè Naido have been worried about the ends looking thin and my braids looking skinny but in general its not too bad.

Welcome back Lisa; I am off forum most of the time these days also....busy with life/retirement/health issues for Hubby and I.

I think your hair is pretty and would not chip back to BSL :tmi:

Perhaps just do micro trims and let the thickness regenerate and travel down to your liking?

I took 2" off from TBL to Hip on the Winter Solstice.

In spite of trimming, my ends get too wispy at TBL and the heaviness causes headaches.

But at least I reached TBL in my lifetime, and will maintain my length between the two landmarks while dusting monthly and doing hemline maintenance with quarterly/seasonal changes.

That length seems to be the healthiest length for me; it sure is the easiest to manage and wear up or down.

Happy New Year and Happy Growing :flowers:

Lisa Long4Life I think it got better, not worse. To me it looks like some of your hair escaped to the front of your shoulder in that last picture. Both pictures that have you wearing a solid purple top look thicker to me, so I think it really is about what color is behind it. I would baby it and remember the multivitamins, but I don't think it looks like it needs more of a chop.

Yup I did .......for now at least....I will grow back out to @TBL and snip every 3 months as needed....end length TBD ;)

It will depend on my headaches and how the ends behave when worn down; it could all change

Thankfully it is just a matter of a couple of inches.

I’m gonna have to echo the recommendations for microtrimming, LisaLong4Life. I’m having the same problem you are regarding thin ends, but small trims are less depressing. But if I gather my ends together, I actually am making progress toward thicker ends; it’s just that they like to spread out and look even thinner. And any time I trim, I gain volume and they spread out even more :( It’s a vicious cycle, but one I recognize and intend to grow past. Maybe it’s only a curly problem, but it’s something to consider. I don’t think you should chop <3

I’m back to where I was right before my last trim (early Oct., ~2inches), BCL stretched, which is also top of tailbone for me. With slightly thicker ends this time. Added a pic in my imgur album for proof. Might upload a better one after I wash if I like the results of a blowout tool I just bought.

I've seen people make it from chin to classic in 5 years and in 6 years I've made it from just above APL to BCL. That's a difference of about a foot, probably. However, I have to consider that over those 6 years I have probably trimmed off at least a foot. I sometimes would take off 1.5" to 2". I'm just disappointed that I'm only just past hip with all the time I've put in. Ah, well; it is what it is.

spirals, my growth is pretty slow, too. Part of it is probably the trims, but in my case at least if I didn't trim I would just stall out entirely or be left with inches of split and knotty ends. I've known people who could grow from earlength to midback in a school year. We've all got different rates. Maybe we should start a thread for slow growers so we have realistic speeds to look at.

Are you measuring curly or stretched?

I'm back about halfway between hip and BCL from TBL. I haven't yet seen what exactly my hair looks like at the moment - I'll try to get my boyfriend to take a length shot tomorrow when my hair has dried. I'm super excited about microtrimming this year and seeing the accumulative improvement in my hair after hanging onto damaged and thinned out ends for so long.

I expect to go from chin to classic in about 4 1/2 to 5 years. I cut back to chin exactly 4 years ago and I'm at tailbone now. But I have only cut my hair maybe four times since then.

https://i.imgur.com/pG0jef6.png

Only barely, but CLOSE ENOUGH. The fact that some waves are there means that all of my hair while stretched at the bottom of my U is there! Those lil babies are just looser than others this wash lol. Good enough for me! And super bonus because I found out on a quarterly photo day and didn't need to wait until the next one!

I will now be here for well over a year because TBL is like another twelve inches from where I'm at.

Yeah :/ Whether medium or long, I have 1 1/2-2 inches shrinkage. I am pleased that I have hit one goal: when pulled in front of me it reaches my waist, stretched.

How long is hip on you? Do you grow 4 inches a year or is that with trims?

Hip to TB on me is 8 inches so I would need two years to get there. But for some it's 3 or 5 inches, and that might be doable for you.

I keep oiling my hair as much as I can daily and oil it completely on weekends. I use coconut oil and castor oil which has reduced my hair fall and really has given it a very healthy look. I also braid it a lot and don't wash it daily or more than necessary as it drains the natural oils from our scalp. This routine has increased the length of my hair and I am at waist length now. I often feel like cutting them but then I guess I love my long hair a lot.

Ok so I always thought bcl and tbl were the same but I see that is not so. TBL on me is 40.5 inches so I should reach it by 2 more years, I think. That gives me a little room for trims. And maybe I will get lucky and have some growth spurts, you never know. But maybe at least BCL by 2020. And classic will be my goal after that...and that is 46" .

You're welcome prinnz. i'm glad to hear that you're feeling better after reading my comments. Yes, your hair is photogenic :D. Yes, just watch your ends for a while before trimming and try trimming yourself using Feye's method this time. Because, if you let someone else do it you might regret it afterwards. All your hair might need is a small trim like 1 or 2cm. That's how much I trim every 6 months. Or, even just once a year! I don't trim off as much as the others do on here an inch or more. That's because I do more of dustings then they do, and a dusting means is you are just trimming off 1 or 2cm every 3-6 months.

Yes, I would call it hip length. Congratulations on making it to hip length! I'm so happy for you. I know the feeling of wanting to be close to BCL. Don't worry, you will get there soon.

I think you might be surprised to find out how little many people actually trim. 1-2 cm is quite a big trim already. I don't think it's a dusting. The point of a dusting is that the hair that falls off is so short that it looks like dust. It's more like 1 mm than 1 cm in length.

ArabellaRose

I honestly have no idea how all of you manage to trim so little xD My plan when I start trimming is to do a trim every 4 months of an inch or maybe every 6 months with an inch. Or I might just wait till the end of the year, and chop off that year's growth.

1 mm seems like it would be so difficult to manage.

Wow 1-2 mm? I had no idea so less can be trimmed. For me my split and dry ends won’t come off with that little... primarily because I have been so irregular with trimming.

Thanks for your suggestions and encouragement Dark40... it means a lot to me.

Ylva do you think regular micro trims are better than a once in 4 months kind of trim? Does it like boost growth rate?

Ylva do you think regular micro trims are better than a once in 4 months kind of trim? Does it like boost growth rate?

It depends on your ends. It does not boost growth. When it comes to growth, the benefit of trimming the ends off is that they're in better condition, not split and thus not breaking off and causing you to lose length. If you find that your ends feel good for 4 months and don't thin out, by all means, don't trim more often than that!

At the moment I am trimming off old damage and trying to refresh my ends often to see what that'll do to me. Last year my ends thinned out tremendously when I went 9 months without trimming them at all, so I'm not going to do that again!

Honest question: how do you manage to cut off so little? I don't think I even cut off that little when I S&D since mine are higher up. Not to mention, I think I will always accidentally cut off more since that's such a tiny bit.

Also, is the benefit of more frequent microtrimming (1-2 months vs 4 months or something like that) more about the aesthetics? If your ends are already damaged, how would cutting off 0.5 cm help the rest of the damaged ends? Or do you only have that little damage? The thinning out I feel is an aesthetic issue.

If your ends are already damaged, how would cutting off 0.5 cm help the rest of the damaged ends? Or do you only have that little damage? The thinning out I feel is an aesthetic issue.

I have other people do it for me. I wouldn't bother doing it myself. And I find that many microtrimmers cut way less than 0.5 cm... Are you maybe thinking 0.5 MM instead of cm...?

0.5 cm is just something I've decided as my schedule. It's not based on any scientific evidence of anything - it's just my chosen pace of getting rid of the damage while still gaining length. It's not meant to be an instant fix to get rid of all the damage in one go. I'm experimenting and trying to find my pace - I'm not an expert on microtrimming, this is my first year of doing it. I encourage everyone to find their own pace based on whatever their priorities and goals are.

Thinning out may be an easthetic issue to some, but I find that my ends break more easily if they are thin in the first place.

Oh yes, that little bit can be trimmed. Especially, if you don't have any issues with damage or split ends. Which I hardly ever do. I don't ever cut or trim off any unnecessary healthy hair more than I have to.

You're welcome for my suggestions and encouragement prinnz....Awwww, you're so sweet.

Well, if you have a lot of damage you can do microtrimming in 1-2 mm. Or, even do 1-2 cm. But since I don't hardly ever have those issues that's why I only trim a little at a time.

This makes sense... my hair is more like a conveyer belt of split ends. No matter how much I trim- lo and behold- split ends... I think microtrimming kinda schedule may help me but I will have to figure out a way to do it myself.. can’t trust anyone else— NO 😐

Just dusted my ends! BSL,Waist and hip are all just a few inches apart on my short torso. My hair looks so much longer than it really is in this photo. inching along to hip and TBL slowly but surely. <3

Not the best length pic, but it looks like I'm well on my way towards BCL (again). I'm considering not microtrimming yet, because I don't have any split ends. Then again, I want to get rid of the damaged portion of my hair as quickly as possible. I'm not sure what to do yet.

Beautiful, Ylva and Synester!

And Ylva, to my eyes it doesn’t seem like you need to trim anything right now. Honestly, it just looks a little taper or layering. I don’t see anything that looks damaged.

Thank you very much!

About half of my length is damaged, even though it doesn't look like it. I am working on getting rid of that and replacing it with healthy hair. But since these ends are fine for now and I am retaining the thickness without issues, I might delay that microtrim.

Regarding the microtrimming, it makes sense to have someone else help with it, but I guess I don't see the point for my hair. I'd have to cut off at least a year's worth of growth, so it makes more sense to just cut it a couple of times a year or just once a year.

After classic, of course; that'll be an easy length to cut at.

Milady, glad you'll be back at BCL soon <3

you're welcome very much it really does look like it's hip length in the pic the way it was taken. I guess some pics do make your hair look longer. I bet you wish that it was at hip. Oh, ok cool. My goal is terminal or to wherever it can grow. I don't even know where my terminal length is, and I would like to know where it is. Yeah, I know the feeling of TBL feeling so far away! I wish that my hair was HL right now too! My hair is also WL too! But not as long as yours. It's about 2" above where yours is now. I'm 5'3" tall which is very short.

Congrats butterflybutton ! I guess I should feel normal then if I'm at hip+ and still feel it's about waist length.

I'm hoping to hit BCL by summer. I thought I'd trim at the new year but never got around to it. Deep benign neglect has set in, along w a New Years Eve resolution to start taking better care of my hair again. I've been meaning to take a length pic since November. Maybe I'll do that soon... and it will convince me to trim probably lol. But my ends feel ok, and I see very few splits ever. So I've been keeping on keeping on... :meditate: It helps that I'm psycho busy right now too.

5ft 2 here! With the way my body is shaped there's only an inch between WL and hip so it only took me a couple of months between those lengths.

Then it's 5 inches to BCL, hoping to reach that by September/October time and then TBL by the end of the year.

I've got just under 4 1/2 inches until BCL with an average monthly growth of 1/2 an inch. With tiny microtrims I might just make it in October but if I hit BCL by the end of the year I'll still be happy, it'll only be a couple of months after that til I'd be at TBL (which is an inch from BCL on me).

Same here! I'm 5"2 as well and once I reach waist properly it'll only take me 2 months or so to reach hips and hopefully and of this year I'm BCL. My length reaches waist when I stretch them or straighten them but normal 2b hair shrinks and hangs around mid back/ below bra strap. I still like lurking on this thread though!

I'm also 5'2". This seems to be a pretty popular height around here lol
I reached BCL before Christmas 2018 and now I'm already only about a month or so away from hitting TBL. 36" was BCL for me and I only need 38" to call it TBL. I won't measure again until in March with the equinox so fingers cross that I'll finally get to call it. :D
Congrats everybody on all your incredible progress!

2 inches between waist, and hip. 4 inches between hip, and BCL (very top). Unfortunately, TBL is a good 4 inches away from BCL for me.

I can’t do a LWB but can do a nautilus. Have you tried other buns or want to do that one in particular? Another option would be doing two buns (one on top of another), I think it’s a cool look.

Have you tried variations of it like the Nessa bun or TorrinPaige’s simple wrap bun? (There are youtube tutorials for both if you haven’t.) Perhaps you just need to find a modification that works better. Lol, I can’t do a nautilus the normal way for whatever reason, but I can usually manage an upside down nautilus. I’m really not sure why that is.

Speaking of modifications, now that I think about it I cannot do a whole hand LWB because I have to leave a pinkie out to help keep my hair contained while I wrap. Otherwise hair goes everywhere and there is no bun. So I leave a pinkie out to clamp down on the loop and simply spread my other fingers and thumb to create more space in the loop, if that makes sense. Same with my upside down nautilus. Perhaps you just need to find the modification that works for you?

Also, where is Lapushka? I recall seeing posts about her struggling with buns until HL because of thickness. Maybe she has some pointers.

Is anyone else struggling with STILL not being able to do a lazy wrap bun at this length?! My hair is thick and while it's admired... I loathe it. I love my hair thinness after that postpartum hair fall... which I had recently. But is see those short little hairs, determined to regrow. I can't wait to be able to bun easily. I'm terrible at them but I think I can definitely do a lazy wrap once mine is long enough. It's funny to say long enough when this is THEE longest mines ever been!

I could for a while after I got to hip but then it grew a little more and suddenly got thicker and now I can't. I'm passing BCL now.

So my hair has potentially grown an inch (or maybe 3/4 of an inch) in ~2 weeks. I am quite dubious about this, but both times it was measured by K so it is likely to be accurate. And I know I use the same starting point, as it is my widow's peak.

Maybe it is a growth spurt? I do not plan on measuring again for a bit, though.

I might be looking at TB by the end of May or sooner if I am growing 1.5 to 2 inches a month. I only have about 3 inches to go.

My hair has been at hip length forever. My fault though...I trimmed almost 3 inches over a month ago to try and even the ends and get the thickness closer to evenly distributed. Shooting for classic length by my birthday in August.

I've thought since BSL I'd grow to WL and then maintain there to rehab my ends for awhile, but now I'm just past WL (woo growth!) and I'm thinking about maintaining and rehab-ing at HL... or even BCL.. I dunno. My ends are split and grabby but they don't *look* too bad just now.

My end-goal is a healthy TBL, but originally it was WL. Then BCL. Then TBL. I figure when I get to TBL my goal will just have moved even further. So will there ever be a good time to stop and maintain for awhile? Probably not.

TBL is where I've decided to get rid of a lot of remaining damage before continuing onwards. Feels like a good idea to venture into the "sitting on top of hair" area with healthier and stronger ends.

Going to join this thread! I have been hesitant since joining LHC to really hop into a thread but I feel that this thread would be helpful! I almost got to TBL, but trimmed back to BCL a few days ago, to try to even up the ends. Except they're not that even because there's a section of hair on the left that persists in being shorter than the rest; kinda tapers off from waist to hip. Maybe it'll grow to match the rest eventually, or maybe it gets more damage for some reason, or maybe it's naturally just... shorter? I don't know; at least it's not that noticeable most of the time.

@languagenut: did you wear your hair open and your handbag on your left shoulder? It might be old damage that's now taking its toll...

yeah, me too also focused on gaining length but you want to make sure that the ends are healthy so that you can gain the length that you want so that you can reach your goals. yes, that would be a good thing to do once you've fully reached waist is to microtrim monthly for a while, at least until you even out your hemline. yes, i always love a blunt, thick, even hemline!

Update on the maintaining vs growing discussion:

I switched to silicone and sulphate free for a bit because of concern for environmental issues (and a bit of scalp tenderness tbh). I used to use a crap-tonne of silicones to be able to detangle my hair because I have ultra-fine hair strands, but I think I found a silicone free DT to keep my hair relatively tangle-free... However now I see how frazzled my ends really are (when the silicones aren't "temporarily gluing them back together"), so I cut back from WL+ to WL, and will definitely maintain there for awhile. Maybe for all of 2019? We'll see how things develop, I suppose.

I am terrible at keeping up with the length threads, but I would like to join! I’ve been growing out a longish pixie (after years of buzz/side/undercuts) for almost exactly 3 years now. I dusted a tiny bit off the tips maybe a year ago but other than that it’s been no trims so I have natural layers that are beginning to fairytale, with the shortest around MBL and the longest just past waist when stretched. I did lose about 3/4” of circumference due to a stress shed about 4” ago, so I expect my taper to increase when the thickness starts growing back in, but I don’t have plans to trim for the foreseeable future.

My current favorite way to wear my hair at this length is probably a figure 8 bun held with Amish pins. How about you all?

I've also been terrible with keeping up in them too, tbh.

Mine's currently a LWB with my fork, although I just learned that using my stick the way I use my fork (by going through the side and not the loop) is just as comfortable and stable. Going through the loop lately has been uncomfortable recently, and I assume it's because I'm at an awkward spot.

Thanks Corvana and Ylva! I do find that disc and LWB's with a fork are secure and comfortable (my hair escapes too much with single sticks), but I don't like the way they look on me for some reason. I think I prefer buns that have a wider base and don't pooch out from my head so much. I still wear them but since discovering that I can do a figure 8 with pins, not as much. My other go to style is still a plain old english braid clipped up with a ficci, but I don't wear that one out of the house much as it's usually my sleep braid that I was too lazy to redo ;).

I remember really liking to do double braided buns when my hair was shorter with spin pins when my hair was shorter. I think I stopped because mine were cheap and the finish chipped off, but I loved the style.

WOOHOO! Birthday milestones are officially the best. :D

So everything that looks 'blonde' at the bottom there stays CRAZY dry - and all the little springy bits that are poking up in the canopy are broken. I have 8 million white dots and splits! (And trying NOT to pick them is my biggest challenge!) Really I'd just like to maintain/grow slowly and do microtrims regularly until some of that has grown out. I think some piece of my brain wants the hemline weight that I have at shorter lengths - though that may not be realistic? TBH, my hair has never been this long before so it's a whole new world!

I'm still working on how to prevent sun damage as my hair bleaches out in the sun pretty quickly , and we spend a LOT of time outdoors doing activities that aren't sun-hat friendly (mountain biking, motorcycle riding - though I think I have that one licked with a buff- multi-day backpacking and etc.) not to mention, hats make my forehead break out!! I need tatsuoni's scarf skills!

I'm really hoping to graduate this thread this year; I'm fairly certain I will.

My growth rate is pretty slow at about 4 to 5 inches a year, closer to 4. Some of that is breakage, but I think the three main factors for my slow growth rate are diabetes/high insulin/blood sugar, stress/pain/illness, and dandruff. The dandruff is being taken care of, and I am now almost itch, and flake free! And my blood sugar levels are getting better with some additional vigilance.

Not there with the stress/pain/illness, though.

Hi spitfire, were moving threads together yay! I agree I love your color as well.
According to my goal length this will be my last length thread I join, but I fear I have picked up lhc-itis so only time will tell where my journey takes me. Happy to be here with you all :)

Hahaha - I was just thinking the same thing - I've sworn for almost 9 years now that all I wanted was waist (and kept cutting anyway!) Now that I'm here, I'm like - Nah - hip sounds good - I fear I will get there and then be looking for the next goal too! :D

ravenskey, beautiful!
amiraaah, I just love your wave/curls.
spitfire511, congratulations on getting here :)
milosmomma, welcome :)

Gosh growlingcupcake possibly I'm oblivious (not uncommon) but I had no idea you had that much going on! I think your persistence is amazing with all of that! Congrats on the dandruff progress and here's hoping that some of the stress and illness will be less in the coming year! :flower:
