I just realized this week my hair is waist length... I can't contain my joy! It took a few days to appreciate it, but just wow. Currently 33 weeks pregnant, so my hair had been growing like crazy. I still have a solid month left of these hormones, so I'm still not trimming, taking full advantage of this growing. My first goal is 36 in which is tailbone length on me and I'm at 30.5! I want mid thigh... but I've some layering to grow out, so I may hang out at tailbone length till that's accomplished. But what I want to know is how do I start "cutting" my hair after spending the past couple years NOT cutting it?! shudder:

Oh wow that's amazing, congrats! You're getting closer! :D

Are you cutting or are you waiting until TBL? Up to you once you get there - could always grow just past and self trim or go to a hairdresser, whichever you feel most confident with :D

I am past BCL now and I'm shockingly close to TBL, I thought it would take me a lot longer to get there but I've got the feeling it might be sooner than I think! My proper measuring and three month pic is 1st July so I guess I'll see for sure then.

If I cut it'll be starting when I hit tailbone. I've done my own dust trims as I call them, but never on the back. Just those layers by my face... I can't really reach the back? I would do those monthly trims on the length, letting grow a bit past 36 in (tailbone on me) and keep it trimmed up right on that mark. It'll still be so, SO hard though.... I've trained myself to not cut!

June 8th, 2018, 06:31 PM
I'm a bit past waist. Waist for me is at about ~29 inches. After my trim today, I am at ~33 inches. I'm putting tailbone at ~40 inches for me. So... that's another 7 inches which means at least another year. Damn, that feels forever!

That said, I don't know how quickly my hair grows so I need to keep a log of that.

Cherriezzzz, it will happen when you're not looking. One day I noticed by looking in the mirror with the two mirror method that it was at hip. And now I'm at BCL which snuck up on me. I'm sure tailbone will be that way.

It's been a while since I've spent much time on this forum, but I can say that length crept up on me without my paying much attention to it. I just put my hair up every morning and kept it in a bun, and didn't measure it.

The pictures are not current. My hair is right at the fattest part of my hips, and I'm trying to figure out exactly what's the difference between hip length and tailbone length? Can anybody tell me?

Edited to add: According to this really useful looking chart I'm just a little past tailbone length. https://www.hairfinder.com/info/hair-length-chart.gif Now on to classic!

I've already hit tailbone length before, but I cut a bit more than 10cm (I don't even know how much lol) to get rid of damaged ends. I was considering to cut some more in a u/v shape to blend my "bangs" with the rest of my hair more, but I'm still not sure and I don't really feel like doing it, so I'll probably just let it be until it gets longer :D So it grew a bit and now I'm somewhere at BCL again.

Maybe this will help:

- Hip length refers to the top the hip bone, where your hips starts to widen after the waist.
- Tailbone length is approximately mid butt length.

Love hair everyone!

I did a little sneaky sneaky length photo before the summer solstice :wink: and I'm pretty sure I hit tailbone, but I won't measure until the 21st.

So my dilemma. I want to maintain at tailbone for a few months to rid some splits. I was really looking forward to trimming at the end of this month but that would probably take me back too much. I might just dust off 1/4 inch this month and try my best to hold out till july and do a proper 1/2 inch.. Ahh never thought I would have an issue holding off a trim but I need it so bad!

I think I'm about the same because CL is around 40" on me and the last time I checked I was at 30" so if I continue my growth spurt next time I measure(5th July) I should be at 31.5".

Yes, I am going for classic and I'm hoping I reach it by the summer of 2020(which is when I graduate secondary school). I'd also like to grow to whatever my terminal length is but if I can't go past CL I'll still be happy.

And as for LHCitis ... it is real, before I joined LHC I wanted waist length but that didn't feel long and then looking on wikipedia's long hair page I found a picture of a woman with CL hair which caused serious hair envy and then LHC and the desire for terminal was born

How long is your hair now? I also love CL hair too! I have an aunt on my father's side of the family that can grow CL hair, and I also had a cousin(who is now deceased)on my father's side of the family as well that had CL hair when she was in high school but by the time I was born they both went through the big chop, and cut it all of the way up to their shoulders! So, I never did get the chance to see them with hair that long. I'm also interested to see what my terminal length is too! If it's CL, Thigh Length. Or, beyond. I feel like you. If CL is my terminal length I'll be happy with it too. Like the saying goes, "Be grateful of what God gave you!"

After cutting back from tbl+++ too a little above bcl, I have come to realize how much I love this length.

It's so much more convenient. I'm not sure I'll be pushing much longer than tbl any more. My comfort length seems to be bcl +/- 2 inches. It's just so much easier.

Also, esthetically, this length looks good with my height, body type, hairtype and thickness. It looks nice when down, hanging straight down now, instead of laying over my butt. I think it brings out the "curtain" effect 1a hair can have, which I like. It also becomes more bouncy and moves nicely.

We'll see. I've had this length a couple of weeks now, and I like it more and more. Earlier I've always missed the length I've chopped of a bit, but not this time.

I think around BCL is my happy spot, too. I'm still going to keep growing out of curiosity, as this is my first time managing to get to longer lengths, but I think I may eventually settle back into BCL.

I think I'm going to be stuck in this thread forever! It's only 7 more inches but my hair has barely budged from 33 inches. I know it's growing because my roots are very visible, and well over an inch long, but for some reason it just doesn't seem to grow more? User error? Breakage? I think I'll try poking my partner to measure it later today, and get a hair shot after I wash it.

I'm just brushing BCL and I can see why it's a happy length. It doesn't really get in the way much more than hip length. I can still wear it down without much inconvenience. I love how it's passing my elbows, reaching my forearms, landing on my lap when I sit down. And it's long enough to do a lot with. Braids finally look long.

I'm still growing but really enjoying where I'm at right now.

Hi! So i think I’m joining. My hair has been growing rather fast and now that I’m at hip I had been debating on what I wanted to do. I decided to shoot for tailbone but I’m in no rush. I want to keep my ends nice and hair healthy.

Question...is bcl before or after tailbone? Seems about the same length to me...

BCL is before tailbone, it's the start of the er..crack. It's more or less the same for me too so I'm just gonna call it all TBL. Kind of like how BSl to waist isn't a huge difference so I never really had MBL either

Anatomically, the tailbone is around mid butt length. So for most, tbl hair would be midway between bcl and classic length.

What many people refer to as the tailbone is actually the sacrum, which is around bcl. :)

Mmh yeah i know this, but I think I just have a high actual tailbone, or a saggy buttcrack. AT MOST it's a inch difference, if that. Mid-butt is past my tailbone :tmi: .

The human anatomy varies greatly, no doubt. That's why every bodymarker and length looks different from one person to another. :)

It also depends if you consider the very tip of the tailbone (mid butt on generic human) or the start of the tailbone (a bit above mid butt):

Hi! I've been on a 3-month camping-in-the-car road trip, during which time my hair actually reached BCL so I was almost to my tailbone goal. But during that three months it was washed in very hard water, brushed with a terrible plastic brush because I lost my nice bamboo brush early on (left it on a picnic table in camp, so sad when I realized it was gone a day's drive later) and tied off super tightly at the same spot everyday when braided. It became unmanageable, super damaged, and tangly. I got home Monday night, and Tuesday morning the first thing I did was cut off about 6", so I'm back at waist. I sure miss my long braid, but wow does my hair feel SOOOOO much better now! I've ordered a new bamboo brush off Amazon, it should be here today, actually. And I now have access to my hair oils and am about to order more senna, which strengthens and smooths my hair so much. At least I know my growth stall which lasted from Nov 2016 until this past winter, is now over! :cheese:

p.s. - I looked up your cut and it is magnificent! I adore that U hemline and am always trying to do that myself with Feye's method. It works but I don't always get such a nice U as the hairdresser gave you. Plus, my hair is wavy so it doesn't lay as nicely anyway, until I straighten it.

I love my bamboo brush. Let us know what you think of this one. My favorite brush ever was a TEK bamboo brush I found in marshalls for $12! I couldn’t believe it since they are like 40-50 brushes. I've had this particular bamboo brush for a year or maybe 2, before I lost it while camping and had to reorder. I personally really like it - wide spaced 'bristles' don't tangle my hair nearly as much as other brushes, and the pad they are attached to has a nice give so when you really want to massage your scalp with the brush it feels great.

That was the best thing about the TEK...amazing scalp massage! It was great at detangling as well but not staying or smoothing . I now have an earth therapeutics and I’m happy with it although the one you linked looks closer to the TEK brush I had.

Got a not very good length shot today. Please excuse my very flat, and limp hair; it's been nearly a week since I washed it.

This was 8th October 2017:
https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=33031&d=1534415596
Red line = waist

This is 16th August 2018:
https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=33029&d=1534415075
Hands at waist

There's definitely growth, but I'm feeling pretty discouraged about it. I also did microtrim every now and then, and did at least one trim of about 3 to 4 inches. So I'm probably growing at average rate. Still, I was hoping it would be longer. It's 33 inches now, and around hip. 36 or so is BCL for me, so only another 6 months for that goal. I think I'm going to have to join the no trimming challenge for the whole of next year. That should get me close to or at tailbone (40 inches) by the end of 2019.

I thought I was at hip, but now maybe not so sure...
Can I call this hip?

Just in case:

Hi there ~ welcome :waving:

Yup it looks it from here...in fact you may be getting close to BCL .....though only YOU can tell that ;)

Enjoy the forum..... and happy growing :cheer:

g_lou, that looks HL or slightly past to me. Whatever it is, it's beautiful!

Edited because I got distracted by dog shenanigans and hit reply before I meant to.

I'm calling BCL stretched. Proof of length and a bad hair day are in my latest blog post. Humidity related hair misbehavior means I don't know if I look BCL just yet on a normal day, but I'm hoping I will soon. BCL is also top-of-tailbone length for me.

g_lou, that *for sure* is hip.

zanelle, I think it is right about at the hip marker, so IMMHO you could call it.

In any case very pretty heads of hair!

Congratulations! You look even a bit past waist to me in your July photo :o

What would you consider your hair colour? I think our hair colours look similar :)

Thanks Draysmir!! :D. My hair color is a bit tricky. I think it could be called chestnut or golden brown. In the light it ranges from auburn to golden brown while in low light it can look dark brown. I don’t dye or highlight it.

Thank you! I think since I cut it feels much shorter, so it's harder to tell the length for myself.
So many heads of pretty bcl+... makes it feel even shorter. An LHC side effect? :o

Groovy Granny, Lapushka, thank you both!
Congrats VersLaLumière and g_lou! Very nice, well kept manes.
When I see g_lou, that is what I could wholeheartedly call hip :eye:
But since I won't trim in the next few years, I won't get rid of the fairytale ends soon.
So I think I wait a bit and decide in a month or so, lol.

I've been growing my hair out from bob-length for about 8 years now, and I'm finally getting close to the length I want! Recently I trimmed about 4 inches off - with regular scissors!! I didn't realize using household scissors can damage it, but I guess I know now! I've been muddling through the whole process and have done a lot to damage my hair. I bleached about 10 inches of the ends, which all fell off - I keep thinking how long my hair would be now if I hadn't done that!
But anyway, I'm glad I found this forum because it's been helpful. Here is my hair now, about 38 inches as measured today! I had to straighten it to find out the true length!

Welcome to the forum! Your hair looks lovely :) Is your hair naturally wavy/curly then if you straightened it? Are you planning on maintaining at this length now or do you think you might continue to grow longer in the future?

Thank you!!
My hair is pretty curly naturally! When it was shorter it would form into ringlets, now that it's longer and weighed down it tends to form softer curls. I definitely want to grow it longer, but I'm not sure how much longer! Right now I think I may stop once it's at tailbone length while curly. I think classic length hair is beautiful, but I wonder whether it might start to become unwieldy at that length? As is it already seems to get caught in everything!

Back at waist, for the last time for awhile, hopefully! I just completed the third of 3 big chops (4” in November 2017, 5” in February 2018, and 6” as of yesterday) to get rid of my layers. As much as I loved layers with shorter hair, I wanted blunt ends as I continued my grow out journey. So excited to be at this point and now growing with minimal interruption. Classic is the end goal, so I’m hoping to dust for as long as possible to maximize growth speed.

Tailbone by end of next year is my goal, too, if I don't decide to maintain! My very fairy tailed ends aren't ideal, so I dunno if I will stop to maintain for a bit or do that when I hit classic. My longest strands are just brushing BCL when wet/straight now.

That's what I calculated for TBL too: I'd be there at the end of next year, including 2 trims of 1" each. If I don't start maintaining at BCL... I also need to get rid of layers and dyes. I'll be maintaining at TBL for some time at most, until I decide that I've got healthy enough hair to try Classic :) That's the plan at least!

I guess I’m just not used to this length since it’s new territory for me. It’s overwhelming, heavy and hard to manage and I’m alwuas thinking it looks thin.

Arabella welcome, you have lovely hair and such a pretty color.

I'm hovering/maintaining around tailbone for the near future. I just cut off a cm or so which means I'm a touch about true TB again. It's a nice flattering length for me, I just need to get my ends in good shape so I can keep it at solid TB.

It's been a long long time since I've been active on LHC. I wanna say 6 years? 7? Life got busy, got a career style job, moved, got married (my hair was down and waist length for the wedding!!), bought a house, phew. I'm tired just typing that. During that time my hair care was basically benign neglect. I trimmed occasionally (sometimes a few inches at a time, I wasn't actively growing, so I'd just trim off what I felt like at the time), didn't oil much if at all, but mostly just had my focus elsewhere and didn't bother with it aside from keeping it up and out of the way. Recently I just decided to actually look at it and see how long it was. I thought I was knocking around waist length still. So imagine my shock when I saw my ends hanging down to my hips. :thud: I had no idea! It's always braided like, 23/7. Back when I was last active here, my goal was waist length because it looked sooo long to me since I'd never been much past APL-BSL. I've flown right by that, and my hair doesn't feel long to me, still. LOL! So I decided I'm gonna try for classic and see how that feels. Here's a potato quality phone pic of my length the morning of my big realization. Sorry it's so bad, I'm apparently pretty rusty at taking photos of my own hair. Gonna have to work on that. :p I'll ask my husband to get a better photo this weekend. We just don't have time in the mornings during the week.

So glad to be here! I honestly never thought I'd actually get to this length! I still have trouble believing it. LOL!

Edit: I can't get the photo to show up. Not sure why not.. Gonna work on that and will come back and edit the post.

Edit 2: Maybe this will work...

Thank you Spirals! So much time "maintaining" and doing occasional large chops (I think my biggest chop was about 5-6") has apparently been good for my ends. Got rid of a lot of the damage from old bad habits. I would like a thicker hemline, but I'm not super concerned about it right now. I haven't trimmed in a long time. Like, about 6 months or even a year. I'm not really sure when I trimmed last. Once I get to classic, I'll see if it thickens up with maintaining mini-trims.

My boyfriend cut 2" off my hair, and it feels nice again. Last time I was at the hair dresser, she used a machine cutter to cut it straight, and my fear that the blades wasn't sharp came true, as I started getting nasty ends just a couple of months after the cut. When my hair is cut with fresh, sharp scissors, I usually don't have to cut my hair more that once every year...

But I love the shorter length, and best of all! I now have a person to cut my hair, who is careful and cuts it straight, is free, and doesn't cut more than I want :D

It's a bit above bcl now. :)

Oooh so cool! My boyfriend made me a bun the other day, which came out really well without any guidance haha. And the last time I tried to "trim" off a few mm he was helping me pull my scrunchie downwards. May I ask, what method did you use? To ensure that it didn't come out choppy. It was cut wet, and all the hair combed and cut at a straight line at the back. So it means that it's longer at the front when everything is pulled forwards. He used a comb to make sure it was straight, and also pulled back hair at each side to make sure it matched.

I've always had a u-hemline before, this is the first time having a completely straight hemline, but I think I like this better. It's convenient for braiding!

It's a bit choppy, but nothing bad. I'd say it's about 90% as straight as what a hairdresser could do, and that's fine by me. In two weeks time it will even out enough anyway :)

I think it's hip length now, but it's hard to tell at this angle and with those bun waves.

https://i.imgur.com/aqkIgLlm.jpg?1

Looks like I need to trim pretty badly to even up that wonky hemline though, it really drives me crazy even if I think it's partly the angle that makes it look so staggered. Compared to three months ago from a different angle:

https://i.imgur.com/MRbcDPwm.jpg

I have no idea why that happened, but I still plan to go through the year without a trim. Come the new year, though, and, I'm getting at least an inch cut off.

I have been measuring by stretching my hair and marking where it reaches with my finger and then I measure to my finger ( sometimes this requires using my third hand). It's not foolproof but more consistent for me than trying to run my hand down my hair and tape measure at the same time. I don't see why it shouldn't be an acceptable way to measure unless someone knows something i don't know? I measured today and it seems that with luck i may reach tailbone by January 2019. Even with a bit of trimming. My hair grew when I wasn't looking!

I think I'm at the tail-end of tailbone length (lol). I loooove a good before/after pic, so here's one from a couple months ago, when a hairdresser offered to do my hair for free :D

The after pic looks like Princess Jasmine hair :thud:

simoneymonie your hair is gorgeous!

I don't know if I will reach full BCL by Christmas like I planned. I just measured, and I'm maybe JUST at 35 inches on the longest strands. Definitely more strands in the 34 inch category, and I am just brushing BCL when stretched dry but I dunno. Not gonna stress too much about it, though.

I've been off from here for a few years (I didn't want to worry about my hair as much I guess) but a few days ago I got a haircut and the hairstylist took off WAY too much hair. I was past BCL and probably at TBL (or an inch from it) and he cut it to just at my waist. :( I asked for 6 inches because my hair was not feeling the greatest and he showed me how much he was going to cut but ended up cutting AN ENTIRE FOOT. I have a long torso so it takes a while to grow my hair.

I was crying and complaining and everyone was telling me I was being so dramatic but it feels like I have no hair. My hair hasn't been this short since 2014. I was going to just chop it off into a pixie cut because I couldn't deal with looking at myself in the mirror and seeing other people with my old hair length everywhere. I could have been at classic in a year and now it's going to take me a year just to reach the hair length I asked the stylist to cut it at. It will be at my old hair length in two years and at classic in three years.

I also asked for layers but he ended up thinning out my ends. I've had layers before and my ends were never thinned out that badly in my life. So now I have shorter and thinner hair, when I just wanted 6 inches of damaged hair cut and some layers to make it a little lighter.

In addition, I had balayage done with red and they had to tease my hair to do it (which I didn't realize had to be done) and the woman who detangled my hair after did it so aggressively. I just feel like my hair is just more frizzy from all the broken hairs now.

So I'm back here now and I'll be here for a few years. :(

I don't even want to measure my hair or take a length picture because I'm just going to be upset. Now I'm going to focus on creating a new hair routine to have the healthiest hair in order to distract myself from the length I lost. I'm also NEVER trusting anyone with my hair again. I will be trimming my own hair from now on.

I want to look through this thread and comment on people's progress but I'll do that in a few days when I don't feel so upset about my own hair.

Anyway, good luck to everyone and happy growing! :)

It's not overdramatic at all....you took the time to grow something, put care into it, and someone damaged it. You have every right to be upset. I don't blame you for planning to do your own trims. I hope you feel better and can take pride in your hair no matter the length, and I hope it grows back even more beautiful than before :flower:

Not overdramatic. I'm not going to repeat everyone's comments, but yes, everyone's comments. I can say this and maybe it's helpful: going forward you are in control. You have the free will to not step foot in a salon unless you know you can trust the stylist (get referrals).

You're definitely not being over dramatic, for some of us our hair is our pride and joy. We put so much love, care and attention into it, to have someone do that is devastating. I've been there several times, and even though I have a stylist I trust now I never go anymore because I can microtrim now.

You've had a set back, but you'll reach your goal eventually. I know it's shorter than you'd like but think of it as wiping the slate clean, you hopefully have healthier ends that you can take care of to stretch time between trims. Hopefully the damage from the back combing and the brushing out will be minimal.

It's not only about how much you care for your hair. You PAID for a service and it wasn't done correctly. If you haven't already, leave a poor review online so others don't have to suffer the same thing.

My longest layers have finally reached WL, I'll wait until more hair reaches WL and I'll trim a bit at the end of the year to thicken up the hemline. I'm so ready to call it WL in the new year, can't wait to join this thread. For now I'll be lurking around

I am so sorry to hear of this! :-(

You are not being dramatic! If all of your friends had 12 inches chopped off of their hair, I am sure THEY would be freaking out also! Just because your hair is long, doesn't mean you don't notice when that much is cut off!

I never go to the hairdresser when I am growing my hair long because they just don't seem to do as I ask and I have been far more disappointed than happy with their work. I now only go when I have the intention of cutting it all off and going short (which is a very rare thing, indeed).

I think the plan you have listed is a good one and perhaps you will fall back in love with styles that you can only do when your hair is at this length.

I'm finally at waist length hair! Yea! (new photo in my signature/avatar from Nov 2nd).

The longest it has been is hip, and then I chopped it to about chin level... silly me! My hair used to grow pretty fast and until recently I had not paid much attention to it's growth rate, so hopefully it hasn't slowed down too much as I've gotten older. I just trimmed off 2cm from my taper to try and even out my hemline a bit -- so no more trims for me until 2019 (I typically feel the psychological need to cut my hair in March -- even though it usually still looks great). Otherwise, I used to trim yearly because I thought I should -- hopefully I can go longer than a year so I can get to my goal faster.

Looking forward to seeing everyone's progress pictures!

Hello to the newbies :waving:

Well...... I caught LHC-itis :eyebrows: and my goal of Hip changed to TBL when it accidentally grew on me as I was dusting racers each month (avatar and profile pics are new).

So here I will stay; longer is definitely too much for me to handle with my arthritis....but this is the longest length in my lifetime so I am thrilled :joy:

I love the feel on my back and I have oodles of style options

Happy growing everyone :cheer:

Thank you both :o

dagny ~ you go for it girl!

I stopped coloring at age 50 for the first time in 20 years after a stylist fried my hair and I had to chop off a foot and had them try to match my roots...never to color again.

It was so freeing....what a great way to celebrate my milestone!

But sadly I went from waist to CBL and then chin.....for the next 11 years; thinking I HAD to stay short as I was silvering and being 'middle aged'.

It wasn't until I was 61 and miserable with curling silver I had no idea how to care for, that I searched online in the hoped of some inspiration and voila.....LHC :joy:

The girls here gave me the tools to care for my hair type and the courage to grow it out, even in the face of doubtful and discouraging comments back home.

That was 5 years ago and I am never going back.... having found my long hair niche....my hope/plan is to live/die as a long hair :eyebrows:

You are a gorgeous 'soon to be 50' gal...wear it proudly.... and do you :cheer:

GG I love your hair! I've said for years now that when I'm older I'd love to have long, flowing white hair (being a redhead I'll probably go white rather than silver) and flounder about in flowing garments :D

I need to figure out where hip length will be on me because I can't tell if I'm that far off.
