I would give that a go and see if you see a change. At least then you can eliminate that and move on to the next theory if it doesn't help :)
Saying that, most of my life has been spent washing my hair in buildings with pipes that old, and 100/200 years older, so maybe it's not that. Though maybe my hair's used to it. I have actually never been able to run my fingers through my hair without them catching, but maybe that's my slightly wavy texture.
One last thought: are the workouts a new thing?
Good point! Lucid has mentioned that she's very build up prone though, so some people might be more sensitive to rust/build up or that sort of thing than others? Like drinking unfiltered water at my work upsets my stomach (and those of a few other people), but there are people at my work who drink the same water without any ill effects.
Lucid, I'd chelate first, then try the deep conditioning after. :)

Yeah, I'll give it a go. Just need to find a chelating shampoo without silicones, and hopefully one that both chelates and clarifies.
No, the workouts aren't new. And I also showered at the same place last semester without any issues - but usually only 1 time a week. So it could be that it never got a chance to build up in my hair.
The last ting I can think about is that I just don't respond to my shampoo anymore. I don't think it's the conditioner (I use conditioner on everything you could gather into a low ponytail if that makes sense), since this issue relates to all of my hair.
I realize that it may sound like I have lots of tangles - I don't. It's just that there is a noticeable change from before. Like if my hair is sprayed with some sort of texture spray, while at the same time feeling normal (soft, smooth) to the touch. It is visible in the last length shot actually.
Aredhel, I'll do that. Hopefully, I'll sort this out soon. And if not, I guess I'll just have to deal with not being able to run my fingers through my hair without them catching :p

It might be an excel spreadsheet. Is there a "the" ?? I just made my own.
Thanks!
Jas, there is a thread containing a spreadsheet that a lot of us here use. It tracks your rate of growth, and makes projections on how long it will take you to reach all your length goals and such: http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=36275
If I remember correctly, there is an updated version nearer the end of the thread, but I may be totally wrong on that. Hopefully someone else will be able to chime in on that.

That's right! It's on this page http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=36275&page=16 posted by wispe. I downloaded it but haven't used it as I don't know if I have it in me to be so exacting, but it is an amazingly intelligent spreadsheet(!) and people seem to love it.

Wow, anatomy is so interesting when considering hair length! I'm approaching 36" and I still feel like I have a good 3" until tailbone. I should be able to call BCL soon.
I was excited this weekend to see that, even in double-dutch braids, my braid reaches hip!

I have a really really high waist and short torso. The difference between BSL and waist was only about 4"-5", I hit midback only after maybe 3 months of being at BSL. lol. It will probably take me 2 years to get to TBL, because of trims and my usual breakage even with such a small amount of growth that I need.. my hair grows SO SLOW.

Yeah, I must have a long torso, because the stretch between hip and TBL feels like FOREVER, but BCL to TBL is, like, an inch, if that. Maybe that means classic will be quick for me too lol. One can dream.

I have really really long torso. Waist is 32" on me, hip is 36", BCL is 38.5", TBL is 41". I'm about 1.5 inches to TBL, maybe 3-6 months from now. My hair never had a growth stall but you never know.

Hi and welcome Wreckinbelle! You are so lucky to being on your way to classic length! I've got another 2 years before I reach that milestone! I'm very happy to say that I'm at Waist Length now!!!!:) Yayyy!!!! But me reaching classic will happen someday soon!!! I got a good about it. I mean, Waist Length is the longest my hair has ever been in my whole entire life!!!

BCL is 38.5", TBL is 41".
How does one identify where their tailbone is? I am past BCL, but its a long way to classic.
I should probably trim to BCL just to thicken the ends.

Just wanted to give an update on my hair. I think the problem was lack of moisture, as several of you guys suggested.
The initial problem was build up, but then I clarified and clarified and clarified without adding enough moisture after. I usually take long showers at home, leaving the conditioner to work at least 10 minutes, whereas at the gym, I have only been leaving the conditioner on for a minute or so...
I followed the advices of adding a leave in, and the results have been great. I use my silicone free deep conditioner as a leave in for my entire length, and then a coney leave in cream in the bottom and front parts of my hair. I have my old hair back :D I've only used like a pea size of product, but that has been enough.
I'll just have to find out how quickly I need to clarify now because of the coney leave in (dimeticone, as second ingredient after water). I don't know if this particular leave in will work long term, I'll may have to switch it for something lighter, but for now it's not weighing down my hair at all :)
Thank you so much guys!!

Heading toward tailbone! I've reached hip - and most days it really LOOKS like it. If my hair is wavier than usual, then sometimes it doesn't look quite at hip yet. Anyway...Onward to tailbone! I'd say I have about 4" to go.

BUT I said I would reassess once October came, so what do y'all think? My fingers are at the top edge of my hipbone.

It's the worst. And it's rather jarring to see someone post what length a certain milestone is on them and that length is a whole milestone shorter for you...

I'm currently top waist right now! Cut back to APL last November, and goal is to get back to TL. My hair has always been very healthy, so I didn't need to cut it back to APL, but I'm hoping my hair grows out even nicer now that I've started pretty fresh. Hoping to have reached a healthy TL in a year or so! I have a short upper body, and for once I'm glad I do, lol. I'm planning to trim my layers as usual, but not trim the ends for 6 months. Also, I'm growing out some hideous bangs!

I'm officially joining this thread, I already post here but waist to tailbone seemed like such a long milestone so I wanted to wait until I reached hip length to properly join this thread. I realized I need to now wear lighter colour jeans for hair pictures so it's easier to see my hair! I guess that's a mini-milestone haha
My hair is about 31 1/2" right now and just reaches hip length. I also decided to take a picture of my hair stretched, and it reaches to the bottom of where a belt would be. My next milestone is BCL, and I'm roughly 3 1/2" from it unstretched, and about 2" away stretched. I still need to figure out where TBL is on me, but judging by where BCL is on me, it's probably a short distance after to TBL :)
Side-note, you can really see how messed up my hemline is in the first picture (agh), the sides of my hemline just barely reach waist length right now. I've felt like the sides of my hemline haven't been getting any longer this year despite trimming, but when I look at photos from the beginning of the year, they are longer. It doesn't make sense though, since the sides of my hemline has been about 3" shorter than my length for a year now, but I've trimmed 1 1/2" at least since then so the difference in length shouldn't be as bad as it still is. I'm guessing I might have to maintain for a half a year or so (maybe more?) once I reach BCL, or TBL if I can really stretch it that far.
The first photo isn't very clear but my hair reaches the top of my pants (top of hips), and the pink line is where BCL roughly is on me. :)

Hair length stretched:

I'm hoping to reach TBL before the end of next year, but if I decide to maintain I'll probably be here for much longer.

I love your hair :o
I never thought I would say this at this length, but hip length on me is an awkward length for my hair. I think I can blame this on my hairtype, when it's APL or shorter its super flicky and annoying, but once it has some length, it usually turns into a proper wave. At hip length though, I suddenly have super flicky ends that haven't been this bad since around APL. I'm assuming because my ends dry to the curve of my back? I don't know but I hope a couple more inches will help it to lay the way I like it.

Which also means according to the LHC hair spreadsheet that I will reach BCL which is my short term goal on 1st January 2018!!
Next month will be my three monthly picture so I'll post it then with a side my side comparison with Augusts shot.

Thank you ladies for your kind compliments. I may not have typed my hair properly. I wish my hair was in this condition years ago. But hey, you live and learn.
You're welcome! :) Yes, you live and learn. I think we can be hair twins! I have the same hair texture when my hair is not relaxed. I get my hair relaxed or straightened by a chemical.

Do you permanently want your hair texture straight? I could never do anything permanent. I like to jump back and forth between having wavy hair and when I want a smoother look, I’ll do wet sets. I use to just blow it out when I wanted it straight with an occasional flat iron but haven’t used a blow dryer or heat tools since January.😊

Mine was self-inflicted--too many Christmas trees in the fairytale ends--that moved me from BCL to just below hip (2-1/2" plus a trim two weeks later of about 1/4"). I feel for you, Beeboo--last time I got a professional "trim," I went from just below BSL to APL--"so it would look 'healthy,'" in the words of my "stylist."
Tell you what--we're about the same length now...I'll race you to TBL! For me, that'll take about a year, because I'm on the tall side (about 5'11") :)

Yes, I do want my hair permanently straight. It only lasts up to 3 months for me. Today's relaxers say to do them every 6 weeks but I can always stretch out my relaxer treatments out to 3 or 4 months! That's how I'm able to retain length. I also love wavy hair too. My natural hair texture is a loose curl but it's thick, and I can't deal with the thickness when it's time to detangle or style. Usually after washing and then air-drying up to 6 hours I will only blow-dry my hair for 5 minutes, and sometimes I will do an occasional flat-ironing. But I don't use that many heat tools on my hair either. That is too damaging.:)

Yes, I know. We do forget sometimes! :D I was also born with black hair too! It was a cold black shade but then as I got to bea toddler it started turning lighter like brown with blondish highlights. Then, when I became a teenager I turned back to a dark brown close to being black again.

I don't know what my milestones are in terms of measurements (like how many inches to waist or hip or whatever), but I hear you about having a lot of junk in the trunk.
Waist to hip happened within months for me. Hip to tailbone may well take until this time next year or close to it! (at myself, BTW)I think my junk is above my trunk! My actual butt is small but I carry that spare tire above it  I am short-waisted, too, which affects growing times. I only had to grow 3 inches from waist to hip but it will be a while until I hit tailbone, probably 1.5 years.

I'm actually starting to think about cutting back to waist.
My hair is heavy, and I'm having issues with headaches and neck pain, so I can't really wear it up as much as I'd really rather.
Also, I've been ill for a while now, and I'm pretty sure a good bit of the length is damaged from my leaving it down (or at most in a low ponytail). I get some really heinous braid shred if I braid it and leave the braid down. Like, within an hour or two, it's shredded within an inch of its life.
So it might not hurt to cut back a few inches and maintain at waist for a while to let the damage grow out, and also give my head and neck a break.
Not a final decision yet. I'm going to think on it a bit more before I actually cut. And again, it'd just be a few inches of length gone. So, we'll see.

I’m gonna join in! :) I’m currently at waist I believe. I was at hip but I’m trying to cut out my henna+bleach. I think I’m gonna try growing to tailbone and maintain from there until eventually one day it’s all my natural colour. This is how my hair currently looks like.

I can hardly believe it, but I am just DAYS away from finally comfortably calling tailbone! I have like 15 hairs that are for sure there, and a big chunk more like 1/3 of an inch behind. Next time I get around to taking a picture, I think I'm going to officially call it.....

Alright guys, I'm officially calling tailbone length! :cheer:
Like I said I would, I took a bunch of pictures for memory for later on. There's a bunch more in my photo album "2017" on my profile here if you want to see more, but here are just a few to really show the length:
A bit of a breeze:

From the back:

Falling from one side of my hood:
https://s25.postimg.org/50b3jucmn/IMG_2347.jpg (https://postimg.org/image/rc8wd8bqj/)
And this last one is kind of silly but one of my favorites. I had just put my hood on and it covered my face entirely, this picture caught me mid-shrug. Also I couldn't get this one to upload to my LHC album, so it's kind of a bonus:
https://s25.postimg.org/e83c0km9r/IMG_2355.png (https://postimg.org/image/6s42erykb/)
(None of these are quite my natural texture btw, it's pretty close but my waves have been stretched out by being in a bun.)
And I guess that's that! I'll be moving on to the next thread here soon... And to the rest of you, happy growing!!!

Man. I am almost to hip, but it's weird, because it's hard for me to think of my hair as being longer than BSL. Even when I pull my hair forward over my shoulders, it is longer than waist. Bah, weird brain.
My ends are in pretty rough shape. I think I may micro-trim for a few months and try to maintain around hip.

I'm still cogitating about cutting back to waist. I've taken some damage along the length in the last year or so, because I've been unwell and often either didn't feel up to putting my hair in a protective style or had too severe a headache for any updo to be comfortable.
But I don't like the way my braids shred. My hair looks okay when in a bun or a ponytail or completely down, but braids just go all to pieces in very short order.
I'm thinking to maintain at waist (I'm around hip now, and it would mean losing only a few inches of length) for a while to let the damage grow out.

Anyone else feel like they’ll almost never or will hardly reach this length?
I’ve been sleeping with hair down on a satin pillow case and immediately saw bent ends.. like 10 of them.
My hair pisses me off sometimes, it’s up in a bun at night and my curl pattern goes horribly and my hair is a mess. Or I leave it down overnight and it looks great but my ends look like they’ve been chewed on. Braided seems to be the best I think but all this makes me feel like I’ll NEVER reach TBL.

I never thought I could get to waist, so now I feel like anything is theoretically possible. My hair damages ridiculously easily though, so it's slow going. To grow at any sort of satisfactory rate I really need to bun and cover it pretty much all the time.
We'll get there. I hit TBL, but I had to trim back because of thin tangly damaged ends. I'm still cutting out damage from leaving my hair down for sleeping for a week when I was sick months and months ago. Patience and care will get us there. If braids are better for you, stick with the braids! For extra protection you could consider a hair glove.

I feel like I've hardly gained any length over this past year. I will try to keep better track of growth over the coming year. Well, it's waist right now so even with slow growth by next year this time it should be at hip, at least. I would really like tailbone to classic hair....but if that isn't possible I will survive. I think hip is about 4".....hard to tell exactly through the chubbiness.
Update
Ok, so I looked at my sketchy notes. Dec. Of 2016 I was 4" from waist. During the year I dusted twice (which would have been 1/4" or more each time) and cut 1" in August. So that would be at least 1.5" possibly a bit more that I lost. I am guessing I grew more in the spring because I have pictures from April to May of this year that look very close to my present length. Since they were not specifically length shots I can only guess.
In 2018 I will try to be more accurate on monthly growth. But it still seems like I gained at least 5" for the year....just that most of that may have been in the first half of the year. So that makes me feel better. Sorry if this is not right for this thread....I thought it would be ok since I am striving for tailbone now.

I lost a little bit of length from my puppy chewing on my braid tassel, had to get a trim because it looked so ragged (did it myself this time, no nasty surprises from the hairdresser). Today, I just found out that if I really streeeeeetch my hair, I’m at 33 inches. Just 2.5 more inches to TBL! I’ll get there in a few months with microtrims, my ends aren’t very thick or solid now.
I’ve given up on measuring unstretched length, it varies much too much
vpatt
November 30th, 2017, 07:13 AM
Beeboo, I can't seem to get consistent results with measuring stretched hair......makes no sense to me, but that's how it is. But I have narrowed it down to about 30". I measure it between 29.5- 30.5". It's as close as I can get

Thank you everyone for the nice comments, it's great to know that someone else shares my same excitement... actually a lot of people!
For anyone discouraged, just try to remember: It takes a lot of TIME to grow hair very long, and bumps in the road aren't always avoidable. Even if sometimes, it's you doing stupid stuff to your own hair. Or like your kid cutting it off. Luckily the hair at the top of your head doesn't really care about that, it will keep growing. I was lucky in that I was already almost at waist when I started thinking about having very long hair, I had a good head start. Everything before that, I wasn't really paying attention for a good 4 years.
All I'm trying to say is, don't be discouraged just because your hair is taking a long time to grow, or you've had setbacks. Thinking about it all the time CAN make it stressful, which is not fun. Sometimes it's ok to do a little less for your hair if it helps you be sane. All it really needs is time, and with that, PATIENCE too.

I'm right-handed, so I insert my hairstick from the right and sweep it across the bottom of my bun to better anchor said bun to my head before securing said hairstick on the left side of my bun. Well, I'm just NOW finding out that THAT'S what's causing the left side of my hair to not be so happy--the left side is showing thinness and I'm assuming that's from the mechanical stress of making my bun the same way practically every day.
This picture was taken about a year or so ago and, if you look on the left side, you'll see what I mean (and all this time, I thought it was the camera angle https://illiweb.com/fa/i/smiles/suspect.gif ):
https://i.imgur.com/SslRDd3.jpg
I guess this means I'll have to *gulp* start working on braids or some such, until I get this damage back under control... :(

I feel like my hair is finally starting to look long in progress pictures. I'm a little past hip now, and my hair is close to BCL when it's totally soaked in the shower and stretched out

It looks nice! Your hair is a pretty color. :)
Reyn I really like that last picture of your hair from the front, it looks so thick and cool! You must be at the high end of ii right?
Yeah, my ponytail is 3+ 3/8 inches at the base, so it is near the top of II.
Starting to get the hang of more consistent length shots... Here is a comparison of pre-trim & post-trim (+ SMT). I'm really impressed by the difference the SMT made!
Ooh, it looks like your hair soaked that up, how nice!

My hair, if it stands on it's tippy-toes when dry and fully stretched, justmakes BCL! Maybe about Valentine's Day (mid-February) it will be BCL in fact
How awesome!! I bet it will creep up (or down, really) and surprise you with how soon it feels!

I'm getting a bit tiered of my hair, and thinking of making a kind of big chop. I know it's the damage that makes me feel this way, since it's making my hair more and more tangly and difficult. I can't wear it down anymore without getting tangles, and I like wearing it down from time to time.
However, I'm not cutting until March (will be 1 year since last cut, and I have documented the growth), so i have a lot of time to really think this through.
The problem isn't the hemline, but bleach damage all through my hair (highlights). So I'm probably gonna cut back to bcl in March. I think that will help a bit. So I'll be cutting away 3/4 of the growth from this year. I'm going back to the hairdresser that cut my hair last time, she actually took less than what I said she could because she couldn't see any damage further up. She also was super lovely and complimented my hair a lot, and was not once trying to talk me into buying products, making a big change or anything like that.
The thing that's making me a bit hesitant is that my hair grows slowly, and I'm tall. So it's quite a large setback... I also don't know how long it will help, since the damage is all the way up to where the highlights starts (more towards the bottom of course), so maybe I'll be making a big chop for no reason... My (first) goal is TBL braid, and I'm so close!
Do any of you guys have any wise words?

Hmmm, lucid... I guess my only advice is that hair will never be perfect, at any length... So it's just important to find a length that you are happy with, and to slowly work on improving its condition.
I have been struggling with this lately, too, because I have been finding loads of splits several inches up from the ends... I finally decided I really like the length I currently have for the versatility it gives me, and that I will just S&D and micro-trim for the next year or so. Eventually it will be better, and in the meantime I still enjoy it. :o

lucid, I like to wear mine down too some times... you should be happy with it, wait two weeks (or until April) and then do whatever makes you happy. The damage can be so discouraging, esp with hair as thin and flat as ours (mine is the exact same, 1a/F/barely ii). If you cut it, it may make it feel fresh and be just what you need. Last summer I felt so good after trimming (for about a month) then I was back to whining about how short it is and wanting growth like I always do

Thanks, MoonRabbit! I use Feye's Self-Trim method (https://feyeselftrim.livejournal.com/) and look down to get the soft V-shape. It doesn't always turn out perfect, but it only takes 5 minutes or so, and it's free! So that's hard to beat and easy to fix. ;)

Yes: don't do it. I'd suggest microtrimming for the next year, as of March. See how you fare with it, and it's also a good occasion to learn to self-trim the hair.

I'm with Lapushka, Lucid! I'm all for avoiding ANY big chop, unless it absolutely, positively can NOT be avoided!
When I started microtrimming this summer, I did a big trim to get rid of about half of my damage, then 1/8"-1/4" trims each month after that. My hair looks MUCH better now--well, I'm happier with it, which is the important thing :)
I'm inclined, also, to go with your hairdresser's view--if she's not seeing any damage above what she trimmed this year, there might not be, and all you'll probably need is a teensy-weensy trim to put your hair back on it's Happy Path. Heck, the consult might not cost you anything--why not, next time you're close by her place and have some time to spare, check in with her and see what she says? You appear to trust her (and she appears to be a keeper!), so a few minutes between now and March could save you some worry, grief and length.

Thanks, Dendra! I apply the SMT primarily from about the ears down on freshly washed hair, then I bun the hair with an old hair tie and use any leftover SMT on the crown before putting a plastic bag and a hot damp tea towel over the whole shebang. Marinate over a tv show or two, microwaving the tea towel if needed, then remove everything and shower to rinse it all out.

Your hair already looks very healthy! It kind of depends on what texture your hair is, and what problems you feel like you are having. However, Snowymoon's Moisture Treatment (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=128) plays well with most hair types. :o

I havent been on in a while, trying to cut back on my obsessing. My last length shot before today is my sig, taken mid summer. But today i noticed a phenomenon i do not enjoy. Some of my most damaged ends hold no dye pigment for longer than one or two washes. The follicles are too open :( it literally makes the last few inches of my ends appear transparent! I still dont want to chop it though, the dry ends respond very well to mantaining a banance of clenliness and mousture/ oiling. Ill add a touch more color and take another shot later. Its really annoying though i wont lie.

Yes, I have been micro trimming every month but I kind of want to start non stop growing come January, stretch trims for 6 months. Thats what I did last year and I think it contributed to my growth for this year, 6 months off 6 months on. Seems to be ok.

Layers and a U-shaped hem have made mine feel shorter than its full length - I understand this frustration you're talking about! Once I'd trimmed out the worst of my layers, and switched my hemline to straight-across, it felt much longer at the same length. There has been a world of difference for me between having a layered, U-shaped TBL and a straight-across, blunt TBL :)
For the record, your hair does not look short at all! You've got a lot of length there and it looks great :)

PrincessMom, if split ends are NOT a problem, I would suggest microtrimming. Put another way, trim off about 1/4" a month (approximately 1/2 of your monthly growth) for a few months--you'll still be gaining length as your hemline thickens up.

Yeah, you are right. And I have never had as long hair as I have now before either, so I'm not sure if my hair is behaving differently just because of damage, or if it is behaving differently because of the length(?).
lucid, I like to wear mine down too some times... you should be happy with it, wait two weeks (or until April) and then do whatever makes you happy. The damage can be so discouraging, esp with hair as thin and flat as ours (mine is the exact same, 1a/F/barely ii). If you cut it, it may make it feel fresh and be just what you need. Last summer I felt so good after trimming (for about a month) then I was back to whining about how short it is and wanting growth like I always do
Hair twins almost, apart from the color :D I've experienced the same as you before as well, I cut my hair quite a bit, and it felt amazing, no more tangles and no more problems :p But the damage was more confined towards the bottom back then, so I may not get such a relief by cutting it this time.
Thank you all so much for these great replies, I'm sorry for not replying to them sooner. I will take your advice, and not cut as much as I originally planned. I will get a decent trim, but only the part of the hemline which is actually damaged/worn out, I will not cut more just to eliminate damage further up, if that makes sense. If I were to cut my hair now, it would be about 1-1.5 inch. So I'm thinking 2-2.5 inches in march will probably make my hair feel quite a bit better. After that, I'll try to get into micro-trimming.
I have posted my seasonal progress here (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=136935&page=40), I think it looks like TBL(?), but it's not quite there if I'm going my true anatomy and the end of the tailbone :p

I’ve been absent from the LHC the last few months, but looking at my last hair pic, I’ve realised that I have very definitely hit waist, curly, and am now ready to join the journey on to hip and beyond! I’m not really sure what length I’d call it at present- not quite hip? I’m tall and somewhat round, so there is quite an expanse until tailbone ;)

I realized I am at BCL today. I still need a trim, but until then 'Ive been S&Ding. I think Classic is the farthest I will go.

I was almost at BCL last month but I trimmed at least half an inch so I'm barely at hip. I'd rather have fresh ends so this will take a while.
