I trimmed back to juuuuust about grazing waist in July, and today I'm midway between waist and hip. Not too shabby?

Right thumb on waist, left thumb on hip. Where I measure hip on myself at least, which is the top of the hipbone (I know it's been contested where hip actually is).

Sorry about the dark picture.

Congrats PixieP! Hip isn't too far away, maybe by the beginning of 2017?

Very pretty!!! You'll be hip length within a few months I think!! And then you'll have to deal with the HL to TBL or BCL abyss. :)

I go from waist to tailbone every time I pull a curl down LOL. This is my sig pic, but a little bigger (not gonna lie, I've been posting this photo all over the forum because I've never had hair this long before!). And this was AFTER a self-trim, to thicken the ends a little from previous damage and neglect. Looking forward to eventually make it to tailbone, curly.

Hi all,
I'm new here, it seems I have grown past waist.
I never grew past BSL before and always wanted waist length hair, but during my growth process, and seeing all of your amazing tresses, I figured I wanted to go for amazing lengths as well and see how far I can get.
Here is a picture of my current length (the color is brighter in real life, somehow it seems much more listless in the pic than it actually is :/):

Hello! After 4 years of growing my hair I'm at waist :D
Untill now I've been quite lazy, same wash routine and same plain bun with Amish pins everyday and after 4yrs I'm bored unsurprisingly. So I'm back to learn some new hairstyles form you lovely ladies!

I sectioned my hair yesterday to dye the underlayer: Ear to ear across the back of my head. Top section got a mayonnaise treatment on the ends, bottom section got slathered in Adore Jet Black. It all seems better behaved now, and the dye results are subtle. Fun for autumn!

Still trimming off new growth every month, and am trying not to think about it too much. I'll have a careful look after the New Year, and see how it stands. :)

Will try for some pictures when DH gets home from a business trip tomorrow. (It's hard to take selfies! I don't know how you guys manage it!)

Hi All! I'm definitely to waist again. I'm growing out a bad layer cut, and had 2" cut off recently. I think I'm just going to do micro trims for awhile to get it more even, so I'll be here for awhile. My hair is frizzy in this Florida humidity, but have no visible split ends. (the frizz makes my hair look thicker than it really is, so I shouldn't complain) I've switched to a silk pillow, and am going to make some sort of silk panel for the back of my chair where my head lays when I'm reclining. I'm using a good moisturizer shampoo & conditioner, and doing CWC. Is there anything I can do to make my hair smooth looking instead of frizzy, but still moisturized?
I haven't figured out how to add a photo inline yet, but there's a photo on my profile page that shows how frizzy the ends are. Maybe I shouldn't do CWC? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

In a word: cones. A coney serum can help weigh the hair down a bit and prevent frizz. You'll have to experiment to find the right weight for your hair to not overly weigh it down. But I think cones are the best solution to frizz unless you have a particular aversion to them.

I would try one if I can find a product with water soluble cones.

Mine does too. When it's short, it just flips at the ends. With more length, my waves start to show up better. Layers seem to make them show up more as well.

I've been flat ironing once every few months or so and hair has suffered not. Same amount of splits (minimal) and white dots (minimal to medium). Either I'm careful or I am in for a rude awakening later...Hair is hip cruising towards bcl, I cut back a bit (half inch or so) when I first hit BCL a few months ago to hit "refresh" on my ends a bit. Your hair all looks so fab!!! :D

November length shot!

It looks great. Sorry to hear of the white dots, though. But they should be S&D'able or trimmable. If it's half your hair, then I'd be careful with the heat. You wouldn't want to lose a lot of length (once went from hip back to BSL because of heat/perm damage). The downside to white dots from heat damage is that they're usually way up a strand!

So I'm at hip after a 3" trim to get rid of damaged ends which had thinned due to post-surgical shedding. But the good thing is the hemline is now healthy and full again, and I can truck onward to tailbone. Hopefully by spring next year I will be there. I realize now I have to pay special attention to the middle bulk of my hair. The sides grow faster than the middle and so it likes to grow in a "W" shape (I'm also a bonafide side-sleeper, and have been all my life...I believe the pressure at night on the sides of my head makes my hair grow faster on the sides).

Paying extra attention to the center bulk helps it stay at relatively the same speed. I've been careful to separately moisturize and oil that portion and it seems to be making a big difference. I can remember my hair growing that way even in 8th grade. I will let my ends fairytale until spring where I will do another small 1/2" trim on the equinox.

I've been trying to keep up with S&D more with increased flat iron usage. If it comes to it, I don't think I'd be too sad about losing a lot of length to heat damage. You make the bed, you lay in it right?

I used a hair dryer last week when I was staying in a hotel (I don't own one myself) and I loved the lift it gave my hair at the roots and the fact that I could wear my hair down all day without it going piecey and needing to be combed every 10 minutes. It seriously made me consider getting a blow dryer after I reach my goal length. If you're happier having slightly shorter but heat-manipulated hair rather than longer but perhaps unruly hair, then I say go for it! Why have long hair if you don't enjoy it?

I totally agree! If you aren't trying to get to extreme lengths, a hair dryer really isn't as bad as people think.

Blow dryers are the bomb! I use one every wash in the winter :) the cool setting isn't bad actually. And even the warm one can be ok as long as you have heat protectant on.

I really need to learn to keep my hair up, I've been stuck at waist for over a year now. I wish I didn't have the thick neck and oval face combo, I just look like a thumb with hair in any updo.

One more 1/2" trim around 12/01, then I'll have another look at the hemline. I started maintaining 06/01ish, so the thickness should have crept down about 3". Theoretically. :)
The first trim was just a dozen hairs and it's way more than that now. I suspect it's approaching terminal, but would like to get it long enough to sit on. How long is that? Classic?

I think Classic is the length for that. :) I'm hoping it will also be long enough at classic to wrap a single braid around my head, which is my "short term" goal, should terminal not be before classic length.

I have classic length, have been using a diffuser since shoulder/APL and I have 0 splits, and 0 white dots. It's perfectly *fine* to use a blow dryer, it is all in *how* you use it. Cool/warm: perfectly fine. If you can hold your hand in the airstream for a long time (dryers tend to heat up) without it burning, it is okay for the hair as well.

I can't help but think this is funny; I've never heard anyone refer to herself that way before. I'm sure you look nothing like a thumb.
My funny is that I say I'm shaped like a tree trunk when my weight is too high.

Today is maintenance trim day, and maybe a hair mask. (mayonnaise, because I'm cheap, and it works! :)

I also think this is going to be the winter of buns.
I'm thinking of getting almond oil? (Because of this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GTzBokTktjw&t=3s). No wonder I was having trouble with coconut oil! My hair is low porosity?! Who knew?) Do any of you use it? Where did you find it?

The "oil" I got at Sally's is mostly cones, but seems to work better than CO. :)

I have used sweet almond oil since I was 3, on my face. It is a very good moisturizing oil! Non-greasy as well, but I would go slow with it no matter what I say. ;) I have used it on my hair, but I tend to prefer baby oil ATM, especially in winter.

Oh my goodness, GAME CHANGER!!!
Here I sit with coconut oil in my hair, it's been in for 4 1/2 hours today and a plastic shopping bag on my head. I went to do the porosity test where you drop a hair into a bowl of water (on that I had found in my hair brush, not an oiled one from right now) and it completely floated on the top of the water all the way to the 5 minute mark. I have low porosity! Now I know WHAT to oil my hair with!
And I happen to consider low porosity a good thing. I don't know if that's what's generally desired, but the way I see it, a good tight seal means that when moisture does get in, it will be slow to get back out. If I'm thinking of that correctly?
Anyway, excellent video! Guess I can go wash out this coconut oil, and get some almond oil to try out next weekend.
So so so happy with all I'm learning here on LHC. I love my hair more and more every day the more I learn about it's "personality" and how to bring out the best in it!

I found mine in the cooking oil section at the supermarket, but not sure where it'd be elsewhere across the globe. I've just scented up a batch for my smaller pump bottle, actually. I'm not a fan of the almond scent on its own, so add a few drops of essential oils to mine. And of course, after testing the mix, my hands (oil's soaked in well and fast) and hair smell yum!

And yup, my hair floats, too, and is silky fine to touch. The one thing that acts differently when it comes to low porosity testing is the drying time of my whites (only). They're dry as soon as I towel or de-turbie my hair. The darker stuff can take days to dry, though, and can drip for hours.

I find it with herbal remedies near the pharmacy section of a store, kind of close to vitamins. It's unscented because a lot of people use it as the base oil when mixing essential oil remedies.

Joining this thread! :) Slightly past waist length but my hemline is quite thin due to light layering, deep u-shaped hemline cut 1 year ago and some breakage due to heat damage which I've completely stopped only two weeks ago. This is my hair after having it in a loose braid for some hours.

https://s11.postimg.org/5ul02390z/hair.jpg (https://postimg.org/image/jbhykyjcf/)how to take screenshots (https://postimage.org/app.php)

Planning to get rid of layers and aim for a straight blunt cut in future but It'll take some time since the thought of losing length freaks me out at the moment. After passing HL I can imagine maintaining there for a while to lessen the layers and have a straighter cut.

I have noticed something.

Previously I had classic-bsl hair (layered); now it's hip-apl. Normally I notice my hair getting oily on a Friday, or Saturday. This time, after the cut, I noticed the "smell" on Wednesday, Thursday. It's really apparent to me. I find that longer hair masks that oil scent way more. This is also how I got to washing less and stretching my washes. It's a little inconvenient, but I can get past it. And my hair will grow, for sure, but I had forgotten what it was like... for sure!

I thought the day would NEVER get here where Id belong to the waist to tailbone thread! My hair is about hip curly- small of my back stretched. I have less shrinkage now due to the fact it's already stretching out from length/weight. :p At this length, I no longer care about achieving perfect curl definition and all the things I used to be obsessed about. I still love my curls of course. I just like to use whatever keeps it as tangle free as possible. This also means I don't scrunch upward with the diffuser, but instead point it downwards so not to blow my hair around too much. Significant decrease in tangles and sheds. Significant decrease in volume too, however. I'm starting to adjust to flatter roots and wavier curls. :) Enjoying braids!

Yes definitely, that 12+ cm extra did do wonders on that! I think it might be because my shortest layer is only APL and that gets oily down the length quite fast in me.

WOW! I had a nightmare last night. I plan on getting a trim of about an inch or so sometime in January after I reach TBL. Last night I dreamed I went to a different hairdresser and she cut my hair above waist! Wow, I was crying in my dream and was very upset, even though my ends looked thick and healthy :p Sure was glad when I woke up with all my hair :eye: :D

I'm glad that it was only a dream! And, that you woke up with all of your hair still too!!! Awwww, I'm so sorry you had a bad dream like that.

No desire to cut shorter here. I am a braid fanatic, and want to grow out a little more layering to make braids easier, and then it is on to waist for me! I really want to make hip someday, but that seems like a loooooong way off. :-D My childhood dream hair would be tailbone length, but I've never grown my hair nearly that long and have no idea if it will thin out when it is that long, so I am afraid to even officially DREAM of that at age 41. So far, so good, but you just never know till you try.

The end of the year is approaching and my hair is still at hip. I have a very slow growth since about 4 months, and I have trimmed off almost all what has been growing in order to start 2017 with a hemline as thick and neat as possible. I could not get rid of some tangly ends though, because this would have meant to cut off some 10cm and I'm not ready to lose so much length. I don't know what is the problem because my ends don't look bad and I don't have so many split ends either... Maybe just the first signs of natural capillary erosion...

A pic from yesterday afternoon, showing my hip+ length. (Sorry for the reddish color : I did try to adjust the color balance of the picture but the lightening of my bathroom was too bad). I thought I would have made it 1-2'' above BCL at Christmas, but due to the trim, I will most probaby need until the end of next summer or more to grow down there (about 3-4"). So TBL is still veeeeery far away !... :knit: :knit: :knit:

Your hair is gorgeous!!! I had a good girlfriend from high school that had hip length hair. Or, your length but the only difference was that her natural hair color is dark brown, and her natural hair's texture is curly. Then one day she came to school with it all chemically straightened. Just like the texture your hair is shown here. Her hair had lots of beautiful healthy shine, and everything!!! Plus, never any splits of anything. Her hair would always look perfect!!!

JustPam, your hair is so very smooth and silky! How lovely!
MoniLein, welcome to the club! We are so glad to have your lovely locks joining us!
lapushka. a very belated welcome back! So glad to have you joining us!

I just finished braiding my hair because it is still slightly damp. I damp bunned it this morning, something I shall never do again. I was going to take a length shot but the cinnabun made it clump together in these awful, dread-like clumps even after I detangled it, so into the braid it went. My braid has grown quite a bit this year, the tail is long enough to get tangled in the waist band of my jeans.
I took a few pictures. I'll try to upload one or two later.

Your hair looks so soft, JustPam and Selki. And MoniLein, that is some brightly colored hair! (I've always liked how blond hair looks.)

So hip is the bottom of the waistband on my jeans, I'm just barely brushing it. If I be extra nice to it, maybe I can call hip by the end of the year? Where exactly is tailbone anyway? My tailbone was dislocated years ago and didn't heal right so I'm not sure how I'm going to figure out when my hair is there.

Atarah, I think I would say TBL as a general rule is almost halfway down your behind, maybe a little higher. And I think you could call hip now. Congrats!

On a side note: Took a length shot last night and was pleasantly surprised to find my hair at tailbone length. I am so excited! It's so hard to judge where exactly your hair is at without taking a picture. I was getting frustrated because I didn't feel like my hair was growing. I compared last night's picture to the one I took in May (a little over 7 months ago). Wow! Quite a bit of growth! I was going to post a picture but my camera won't connect to the computer. As soon as it works I will post a picture.

Aww, thanks. I actually prefer my hair in the summer, when it gets red highlights. It's funny that you have wished for darker hair; I used to wish for blonde hair!

Thanks, lapushka, since this is my regular pair I'll use that as a guide!

Change of plans:

Originally I'd planned to maintain at hip length until the new year, but I'm going to continue with it for a little while. The ends are pretty beat up this winter, so it's probably best that they come off. :) I'll have another look around the spring solstice and re-evaluate. :)

I guess I'm in here now, I've been waiting to see where my hair stopped growing, and that hasn't happened yet. I'll be trimming a new hemline on Jan 1st, but it should still keep me just at waist, so it'll be a long trip to tailbone. I guess I'll be here a while, my hair seems to grow slowly!

So I measured yesterday and I'm still an inch shy of tailbone :( It's sad to see that others, who were once the same length as me, have grown to my first goal length but it is what it is. I found out that monthly microtrims are definitely better for me than quarterly trims so I'll be going back to monthly trims in the new year. Happy growing and happy holidays everyone! :)

Looks like hip or somewhere between hip and BCL to me, but I'm guessing at your body markers. Beautiful, either way!

I need to get some new pictures up myself. I'm not sure what happened, if there was invisible breakage or what, but I seemed to have completely stalled for the past nine months, and never in my life has that happened before. I do tend to have stalls once or twice a year, for a month or two, but that's the worst! There doesn't seem to have been significant fairytailing, though, and I do usually get that as it grows and ages, so this stall confuses me. At any rate, I'm pretty sure it's finally creeping back down now, so I might actually be comfortable calling BCL myself again sometime soon! It's been a long time coming, and I hope it's really true that whatever happened is over, because I much prefer my hair "growing like a weed", even if everyone I know thinks I'm crazy for having it even half this length.

Fellow waist-to-tailboners, how do you measure the circumference of your ponytail?

I realized there's a huge difference (about half an inch) when I pull the yarn tight vs when I tie it on "securely" (not super tight, not super loose, but, you know, secure). I measure by tying a piece of yarn around my ponytail, then snipping the yarn off and measuring the length of the strand. How tight do you secure your yard/band/measuring tape/whathaveyou?

The issue is that when I pull it tight, I'm 2", which would put me at an i, and when I do it just "securely," I'm 2.5", which is solidly in ii territory. I need opinions!

Well, it's the very longest whispies over there, when not pulled tight it looks like just above hip to a little over waist... I'll wait a bit to call hip, a month or so, when a few more layers have caught up :D But still- yay!! :D :D It's a nice feeling to know that I am still growing strong :P

Hi samanthaa.

Hair should be gathered firmly enough not to let space between the hair strands. Otherwise measurment cannot be accurate becasue it would vary a lot from one day to another, depending on the tension of the hairtie and how poofy your hair is that day (especially if hair is very curly). It mean fully packed but not killing strangled either. Kind of what you get with a scrunchy.

I don't think there's a lot of buns I can't do at this point, but my hair is lower ii thickness and I suppose that really effects what length you need. So I finally took a picture of my length today! I figured these jeans would be the best thing to help measure my growth, because my hair is starting to get too long to be measured by a shirt haha. So it looks like I'm about an inch away from meeting the waistband of my jeans, somewhere a couple inches between both waist and hip. I'll be trying to take a picture on the 9th of every month so it'll fall on my birthday in October (why not? haha).

Thank you for the suggestions, I will try them! Yeah, thickness might be part of the issue. I always underestimate my hair's thickness...for example, you can forget anything that involves a braid for me! I don't get those beautiful, pliable, fairy braids people with finer hair types have.

Oh, good luck and have fun with experimenting! I'm definitely in that pliable fairy braid fine hair category myself but my sisters are all in the iii m/c wavy style-defying category and I definitely struggle when they want me to recreate my braided styles on them. We usually compromise with pinning an accent braid around the bun, or braiding just the scalp hair and not the tail before we braid. Or rope braids - I find them the most pliable.
Reyn - looks like top of hip to me too.

Thank you! Yes, I'm also sure that with all of that pampering of my hair won't be wasted either, in any case. Oh, right now my hair is very healthy! I mostly co-wash 7 times a week, and I deep condition twice a week. I love using cheap conditioners like, Alberto VO5, Garnier Fructis Damage Eraser, and Garnier Fructis Triple Nutrition, and Pantene Pro-V.

Hey, I had a good real life girlfriend of mine 30 years ago that had gorgeous hair almost TBL like yours!!! But today, I don't know if she is still wearing her hair that long or not.

I wanted co-washing to work for me, but it didn't work out long-term. I hope it works for you. And thank you!

I just tried the pha bun and it's a keeper! I had to fiddle with it to get the tightness right but I'm so glad to have a neat, attractive bun option. I'm amazed at what one stick can do and am beginning to understand why other LHCers are addicted to buying them!

I'll be trying to take a picture on the 9th of every month so it'll fall on my birthday in October (why not? haha).

Well anyway, here's my picture! These are combed out braidwaves. And sorry it's so dark!

I put it as tight as I can.

Good question.. I'd agree with Mimha as well. Some days hair is more fluffy and voluminous than others.

Oh, boo. My hair's probably even thinner than I thought then :( I don't know why the number on the tape measure is making me so sad (it's not like anything's actually changed with my hair), but it does...

Just made a picture for the first time in ages. Here it goes.

I learned it from this video:

I found it pretty easy to follow, I only needed to re-watch that first twist with the stick. Otherwise the real adjusting comes from trying to find the right tension.

Yes, and indigo. It's been a couple years, and I don't mind the dark, but if possible, I'd like to lighten it. I found a great Nightshade thread about Sun In, I just don't know if I'm patient enough for it :). Might just have to go to straight henna!

Johannah, it looks so beautiful! :thud:

I already said it in the photothread, but that is some seriously beautiful shine!!

Johanna, your hair is absolutely beautiful!

dvep - I really like lazy wraps, rose, and pha buns. I don't think there's a lot of buns I can't do at this point, but my hair is lower ii thickness and I suppose that really effects what length you need. I've heard the disc bun is good when you don't have enough length for some other buns yet, as well as bunning half your hair and then wrapping the other half around the completed bun. Congrats on the first set of sticks! I didn't really get into putting my hair up until I discovered stick buns, it was like a revelation to learn there were other buns besides the sock bun and the cinnabun!

I've trimmed (well, my mom did) probably more than 6 inches off (classic to hip) this past November and this means my hair grew an inch already (I can always depend on 1/2 inch a month). I can feel it in doing my LWB that it is getting a *little* easier and is now sitting a bit better. An inch, what's an inch? To some it means a lot.

Yeah, wearing your hair up is much better for you than wearing it down all of the time. Wearing it up is more of a protective style to protect your ends. I only wear my hair down twice a week, and on the rest of the days I wear it up mostly.

I think you grew a foot of hair in less than a year! I'm jealous particularly since I've just had (and may be still in) a major stall and it took me three months to grow an inch! :)

Anyway I'm joining in here now, because I am pretty sure Tailbone is my goal length. Hi Y'all! :D

It's actually 9 inches believe it or not! I have a really short torso  I had a couple of growth spurts in the summer that really helped it along.

Congrats, vampyyri, and yay for growth spurts! TBL already? Gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah! So, you'll be at Classic before I end this post? ;)

Welcome to the next part of your journey, Stub! I hope you enjoy all the tickles and treats your hair has in store for you.

As for me, I've regained what I'd trimmed in mid-December and am (again) about a month from BCL. TBL will be this year, although the when bit will depend on any trimming (probs moreso dusting as I'm happy with the layering and shape, but wouldn't mind less underlying white along the hemline). For now, my ends are blissfully happy, so it's onto lengths unknown to me. :)

parkmikii, your length and color and texture -- all three! :thud:

I'm past hip and starting to feel my hair brushing my butt every once in a while. My last trim was in July and I feel like I'm due again, but I'm really rather happy with it at the moment. :)
