...and here we have a predicament. Should I call hip or not? Should I just tough it out so it's even more satisfying when I get there? Should I just say it's "hip-ish"??

My thumbs are pressed directly on top of my hipbones. Incidentally, poking my hips like that is quite uncomfortable. Truly, I paid a terrible price to get these pictures! :boohoo: ;)

I would certainly call that hip, because your hairs can reach to that milestone. Lots of people call milestones stretched as well so that's really not unusual. I do know what you mean though, when I hit a milestone in a similar way as you're doing now, it almost feels like I'm an imposter. Haha. However, I would never think that of others when they call milestones in similar ways! I'd say you're totally fair to call it hip.

I am joining this thread, as I've finally made it back to waist. I was there in Aug, but had a perm which bounced me back to nearly BSL. I like to count my body markers unstretched and freshly washed, so it took me a while to make it back. Stretched out I am nearly HL.

My hobbit sized stature makes for a short distance between markers. :p One of the few benefits in my mind. I should be flirting with BCL by the end of the year if I don't have to trim too much.

Thank you Fiorildi, bunneh and Pinni for the welcome. :o

Fiorildi, the purple was just the start of the color madness. I think the purple/teal/pink may be on my hair longterm at this point. I've done so many applications/layers of dye, it doesn't fade a lot anymore with washing. It's a good thing I really like it. :p

Admittedly I was having a really good hair day when I took that pic. I had slapped a moisturizing/protein treatment on my length while I had my roots slathered with dye "cooking" for hours. Hair seemed to like it a lot.

Hi everyone, I think this is the thread where I'm supposed to be.
I'm having fun reading everyone's posts here. (Wow Sterlyn, your color is gorgeous!)

I seem to be somewhere between waist and hip, depending on which part of my hemline I "count", and I'm hoping to get to BCL and maybe even TBL this year. I'd be thrilled to be at BCL with a thick hemline.
Looking forward to getting to know you!

Oh no! What happened at TBL? Were you unhappy with how it felt? I am hovering over TBL so I am interested in why you are saying this. :( Thanks!! ETA I have been kind of thinking the same thing. Originally my goal was classic at 42 inches but now that I am at 36ish inches with TBL at 37 inches, my hair is very thick and tangles horribly, and is very heavy and hard to deal with. ;( I am having trouble thinking about another 6 inches of tangles, conditioner, weight...etc. ;(

I have had hair at fingertip and it just...it's annoying. TBL is aesthetically nice but it is annoying already. Just personal preference: ease of care/detangling, wear-down-ability, etc.

HeartofHaleth and maborosi, I love your hair. :crush:

I know I just got here and posted a pic fairly recently, but... I decided to take a picture on wash day with barely dry hair (which I never do), just to see what it looks like without flippy ends from bun waves. And I think I may actually be past waist when my hair is laying straighter. :hmm:

http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=21924&d=1457365706

Perhaps I could be at hip (top of my jeans) by the end of the year, or for sure early next year. That would be neat. (Also I've got some thinning of my hemline from not trimming for a year and a half, but luckily it doesn't bother me too much. Might trim January 2017 or when I can trim back to hip.)

I'm going to check in too since I got to waist in February. Actually I'm not sure what my actual goal is; at least hip and maybe tailbone or......
But for now, I should hit hip by the end of this year. I'll have to think about a trim then too, since it's been over 2 years already.

So you have grown your hair to fingertip but cut back to TBL? I can totally see how you would prefer the shorter lengths as compared to ftl. The good news is that since you cut back to TBL, is your new hemline nice and thick and healthy? That is what I would sincerely enjoy if I get to classic and then cut back to a thicker hemline at TBL. Well --this is good to know and be prepared for. I have never been at TBL before, in fact, my longest length was waist length, a few years ago. Thanks for the explanation as to why you prefer BCL/TBL. ;) I think we are both thinking alike! ;) I will know more in another year+ when hopefully I will be reaching classic. Thanks again!! :cheer:

I just cut from nearly classic to about hip length and heading down to my favorite length of TBL. I'm a bit bummed about the chop but trying to focus on the fact that my hemline will be happier and healthier and the layers are out (except for growing out bangs at waist now). Looking forward to sharing the journey with everyone :-D

Actually I cut back to waist, hit TBL and cut back to waist again (to get rid of bleach) and have just now hit TBL for the (4th?) time. The last time I had layers put in to completely get rid of the bleach so I don't know how thick my hem would be until the layers are cut out (which I am slowly doing). I don't prefer super thick hemlines as the ends never want to stay in buns but the natural taper at TBL+, even with a blunt hem, would still be thin enough with my hair type to not be annoying.

FTL was super annoying, honestly. I have really tangly/fine hair. My hair was definitely thinner with the bleach, though (it was sun-in).

I have wondered about growing to knee but I don't think I would ever make it. I will get too annoyed and chop it. I really like waist-length loose but it is SO SHORT for updo's and braids (IMO).

Hmm... I knew I was definitely at/past waist, but with my hair freshly washed and still damp, it looks like I might actually be all the way to hip already. I'll have to test it again once I comb it out tomorrow. Is hip length defined as the top of the hip bones, or the widest part of the hips?

For that matter, are BCL and TBL in fact the same thing, like I've been assuming? What is the difference, if not?

This. I have this sentiment exactly haha. I was at fingertip and it got hard to manage, cut it to waist and suddenly the blunt end were so thick and I couldn't tuck them into buns. Now I'm at tailbone with layers and a U hem. It's my favorite length and style so far but I just got married and apparently newlywed brides like to chop of their hair after the wedding. I will probably just do a trim back to waist, to get rid of layers but I'm liking the U hem so I'll keep that shape. I like the idea of growing as long as it will go but I found my sanity limit, which is slightly past fingertip and I don't think I would ever go any father, much less to knee. I'll have to post some pictures soon for an update.

The sacrum bone in the spine (which is at the top of the bum/at BCL) was "traditionally" used to call tailbone length, but the tip of the actual tailbone (the coccyx) is usually a couple of inches lower so a lot of us call tailbone somewhere in between the top and the middle of the bum. If you're feeling adventurous you can feel for the last bony protrusion under the skin in the bum crack, but that's not something everyone wants to do.

Huh. According to the 'dig around in there' method of classifying TBL, it looks like I'm closer than I thought. My actual tailbone seems to be 37", not the 38" I was assuming - and I'm only an inch away! 36" is BCL on me.

38" still feels visually more like tailbone to me on my own body, but I guess I'll have to see if I change my mind at 37" :)

Sorry for my somewhat graphic descriptor but I figure if BCL has become a normalized term on this forum, then y'all can take it ;) So... sorry/not sorry? :p

Lots of milestones, congrats ladies!

Have you all found you needed to switch up styles once you got past waist? My buns are starting to hurt by the end of the day. I usually wear a nautilus, Gibraltar, or Cinnabon held by one stick, a fork, or (most usually) a double-pointed knitting needle bent into a hairpin. Any ideas? The last remains of my bangs still slips out of braids so I don't wear those too often.

I've decided to finally take the plunge and join this thread :waving:

The recent photos that have been posted are lovely!

I've only just reached waist, my hair is 78cm, which is 30.7 inches. It shrinks a bit when it's wavy but I have checked and double checked and there is no doubt that it actually looks waist length!

The only problem I have (which maybe some of you could advise my on) is that the last 6 inches of my hair are fairy-tailed; it wasn't fairy tailed much until I reached APL-BSL. My hope is that it is weaker hairs from when I was at the end of recovering from a very poor diet, and also from where I straightened it sometimes. The 6 inches would correlate with it being the first year or so of growth from where I attempted to care for my hair and body properly (with the exception of the straightening!)

My question is, is there any danger in leaving the ends as they are rather than cutting them all off? I've been worrying that the hair thickness won't grow down, and instead that the thinness will somehow spread upwards. However, I S&D and from what I can tell, there aren't hundreds of split ends etc. I have also recently had a trim, and have one ever 5-6 months or so. I am thinking of having a microtrim everything 3-4 months or so to try to get a thicker hemline.

Lol. Please don't kick me out of here prematurely. I'm a bit in awe of the tailbone to classic thread. (Cue Wayne's World clip.)

Recruited some measuring help. Hubby says my hair is at 35 inches now. Says classic is at 44 inches (I guessed 45 before.). He poked around (I have on jeans) until he got frustrated with an "I don't know!!" Before guessing tailbone at 41 inches. That would mean I have six inches to go until tailbone... Why does this seem so difficult?!?!
(This really IS TMI length!)

Hmm... I'd be skeptical of that tailbone measurement. Your picture makes you look well past BCL, and tailbone is usually no lower than the mid-point between BCL and classic, but yours would be inches past if he were right. In the picture it's hard to tell because of the angle how far you are from the midpoint but I think you're much closer than you think you are. I'm even skeptical of his measurement of 44 for classic if you're at 35 now though the angle of your picture might just be making your bum look shorter.

I find that side shots give a better *true* representation of length. I can look TBL but be inches away, but if I take a side shot it is obvious I am not TBL. I hate side shots (profile shots) though. Second best is positioning the camera in line with the hem.

Wildcat Diva, you're getting *so* close!

I second what Nique1202 said, I'd be sceptical of that estimated measurements. At 44 inches it seems that you will most likely be well past classic (but of course, you will know better than any of us here). Your hair looks so delicate and flowy in the wind :crush:

Wildcat Diva
March 20th, 2016, 07:50 AM
Ah haaaa! Yes. Hubby took that shot, and he is tall. Mystery solved.

You all say the sweetest things about my hair. I love it, you guys are the best.
I am solidly past BCL, not stretched (Dry, wavy), at 35 inches If classic is 44 inches ish... I still have to be MORE than four inches away if we count tailbone as half way between BCL, generic measurement wise.

I'm pretty sure that classic estimate is close to real. I'm 5'6" so not super short.

Yes looking from the side, I still need a significant length of hair to dream of reaching the bottom of butt cheeks. A bit more than a year of growth to my eye.

I really bet it's the camera angle making me look to be there so close to tailbone.

Body exploration experiment:
I don't know, I'm sitting down, I can feel where I think my tailbone is. My hair really is NOT far. Then, there is still a couple of inches of flesh past (south from) that before...Well...you know.

Just wondering - when you're measuring your distance to classic are you holding the tape straight as the crow flies along your length from hairline to bottom of the cheek or are you letting it conform to your contours as you measure along? A length span of 9" seems pretty vast from BCL to classic, even giving allowance for bodaciousness :) If you're curving the tape under your butt and kind of 'rounding the corner' to reach your horizontal smile, you may be artificially stretching that measurement? Perhaps?

Just a thought... just trying to help get you there faster! ;)

Unless they're splitting, not really, but splits will travel up the hair unless you cut. You'll just have thinner ends. Eventually, in my experience, length will eventually catch up and you'll be able to have a more even hemline. I think some of my pics show this. I did small-ish trims when I wanted to keep it straight and full, so as not to be too drastic at once, but it was a more gradual process. I may need to start that again soon, lol.

So I figured it'd be fun to track my braid length, along with the actual length. I've always known that I braid ridiculously tightly, and "lose" a ton of length as a result. As of last weekend, I was unquestionably at hip, possibly just past. Yet braided, this is what I get:

http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=22158&d=1458870459

Just barely past BSL -- a solid 6 inches, if not more, that disappeared. Incidentally, that also puts my braid ends around the same length as many people seem to hit a stall... Around waist/hip is when I seem to hit my own stall, and I virtually always braid my hair. I'm now wondering if this standard-stall-length is the real reason my hair growth seems to slow for a while at this point, rather than a legitimate "grows in fits and starts" thing. Because for all that my hair is somewhat "protected" by being braided, the most fragile part is still exposed, right at the most damaging length. Interesting connection that I'd never made before!

I'm also rather impressed at the lack of a visible taper. It definitely has one, I can feel it as I braid, but apparently it's still minor enough for the braid to hide it! Though, for there to be that little taper, at hip length, and my hair not having seen a pair of scissors for 22+ months, and knowing that I have previously reached FTL+ with fairytale ends and the worst care my hair has ever had, I'm getting increasingly curious about what my terminal length might actually be! I still doubt I'll ever find out, but it's quite a question!

Nice hair, Waitingsolong! It doesn't look like you lost much length.

Nique1202
March 29th, 2016, 09:34 AM
Depending on how I measure it I'm either 3/4 inch (longest 15-20 hairs, stretched), 1 inch (first really visible grouping of hairs, stretched) or 3 inches (loose with my natural wurls or my usual bun or braid waves) away from tailbone. I'm probably gonna call it at the first visible grouping of hairs stretched, I think. Everyone here is lovely but I've been here for soooooo looooonnnnggg, I first hit waist in September 2014 I think? Some of that was trimming and some of it was a huge growth stall where my hair almost didn't grow at all for 3 months but it still feels like so long. Now that my hair is touching my butt I'm getting impatient to start the next phase.

I've still got 2 months to go even if I get a bump in growth since I only measure once a month, but having measured this morning I felt like I had to go ramble somewhere.

Updated my siggy today, and happened to spend a little too much time looking at my file of past siggys.

It looks like I've gained 3" --if I'm generous. I don't think your regular Joe on the street would notice any gain-- since this time last year? I can totally chalk it up to keeping a moderately blunt hemline, because I've trimmed off lots of wispies, but Geez, Louise! :justy: Could I possibly have old pixie layers hanging around in there? Do you guys notice a "slowing" around WL?

How does hair act as it approaches terminal length?

Summer is a great time to put it up and forget it.... and it will surprise you by Fall :cheer:

UPDATE: I have changed my mind :o

While measuring for TBL, I was reminded that I like to keep my hair down at times, and because I am short with a short torso and small butt, TBL hair will be 'in the way'.

I can't be bothered with fiddling to keep it out of the way for personal care etc, and it is starting to get heavy (sensitive scalp/headaches).

I was really happy at HIP....so I re-started my monthly dustings on the full moon with the plan to hit Hip in a few months and will maintain it there.

My sister is very curly, probably around 3B. She's never grown it out much, that "bushy" SL - APL stage is too much for her! Her daughter, Darling Niece (25 years old), isn't quite as curly and grew to WL until she had a child, then cut back to SL.

Thank you SO much! I needed that!
It feels stalled, but I felt stalled at BSL too. I think these body markers are farther apart, there is more room for error when checking length, and I'm having to trim sometimes because the ends get more beat up. I'll just cool my heels and wait. That approach has worked great so far! :)

I honestly think the whole secret to growing hair long, is to put it up and forgetabout it...and use oils... on the ends... Honestly, I am very curly and those shorter lengths above apl... I just put it up into a french peacock twist and had chin length bangs which I straightened... I called this my Sarah Palin hairstyle... at one point, I did cut in shorter bangs above my eyebrows, but then grew them out into side bangs...which I used a straightener on them... and spray too.... I was in survival mode...lol I would just put it up always! I still do!! I have alot of hair and it would drive me nuts if I didn't bun it everyday... ;)

Yesterday I trimmed 2 inches in honor of my 22nd birthday (which was the 20th) and because I had a lot of splits that S&D-ing didn't seem to be helping with. I asked a lot of random friends if I should trim or not and almost all of them said yes so that really helped me decide because I hate making decisions lol. Anyway, because I'm only trimming quarterly anyway, I feel less bad about a larger trim since I only dusted on the Spring Equinox and can choose to only trim a tiny bit off at the Summer Solstice to make up for the random larger trim. The last time I measured my hair was about a month ago on the Spring Equinox and I was at 37 inches and I measured the ends before I trimmed them so I know I trimmed 2 inches but when I measured after the trim (because I didn't bother to measure right before trimming since my tape was in my SO's truck) I am now at 36.5 inches so I guess I've gotten a growth spurt due to the consistently warmer weather we've been having lately (I live in Florida, USA). No regrets since you can't even tell a difference in the length somehow!

I did my monthly measure a few days early, BUT I'm officially at 35 inches stretched, which is close enough for me to be comfortable calling tailbone. Top of the bum at 32, classic at 40, so one inch short of mid-bum is good enough for me. It's been lovely here in the waist to tailbone thread, but I can't say I'm not excited to move along either.

Good luck to the rest of you! May we meet again soon. :blossom:

Congrats, Nique!

I thought I had joined this thread but I guess not! I claimed waist last month! TBL is my ultimate goal, and I'm super excited to be on my way there. I'll post an official picture when I do my length check at the beginning of May.

I have my photo!

http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=22648&d=1461777582

I think I've actually been at "true waist" for longer than I've been claiming—I look to be a good 1/2" to 1" past already. I think I was measuring to where my thumb rests on on the curve out to hip, if that makes sense.

Hi, all, I have a question for you.

I've been hovering between waist and hip for about three months now, and things have been going really well. But for the past two weeks I've experienced massive shed in my longer layers, and the ends are now scraggly. :( To complicate matters, for some reason I cannot figure out, over the past two weeks my hair has really been misbehaving--suddenly snarling and matting up, fairy knots, general unkempt appearance. I thought it might be a moisture or protein problem, but oil isn't helping. I'm clarifying today with ACV and doing a henna gloss, but has anyone exerienced a sudden shift in the way his/her hair behaves after a certain length? This did not happen the last time I reached this length, but I wonder if it is something that does often occur once you hit waist and longer and, if so, how people work through it without losing length. As it stands, I think I'll almost have to cut an inch or two, which is depressing. :(

I don't think I mentioned it here? But I think I've reached ip (if hip is counted as the top of the hipbone)

This is after I did a tiny trim a month ago, and my thumbs are resting a little on top of my hipbones.

http://i1063.photobucket.com/albums/t503/misherusedai/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zps0zhdpnws.jpeg

Of course, it's just my stringy ends hanging out on hip, the majority is still at waist.

I am thinking of trimming back to waist though, and maintaining there for a while, I have a lot of damage and split ends in the bottom cms and I think that would be better for my hair. I really want to thicken up my hairline too.

But, I will follow the 2 week rule :P

I would start with half anyway, just to be on the safe side to make sure I don't do something I'll regret bitterly :P

I've tried to so a S&D several times, but I give up after the first lock of hair because there's just so many split ends and white dots, I get too discouraged.

It depends on what weighs on you more...thin ends or loss of length; for me..... I got tired of the thin ends and opted to lose a couple inches.

browneyedsusan
May 1st, 2016, 04:36 PM
@PixieP: I can relate. A few years ago, my ends looked thin, and not looking as nice as I had hoped. (Ya. Your situation is different. You're not happy with the condition of your ends; a different thing.) My kids told me to cut it back 2 or 3 inches, but I didn't want to. --It took me years to make this hair, and people are just starting to notice it! I'm starting to get compliments on it! I'm just beginning to enjoy it! 2 or 3 inches will set me back 4 or 6 months of growth?! :justy: -- Instead, I trimmed 1/2" every month for 3 months. That seemed easier for me to deal with mentally. I knew I was only trimming off 4 weeks of growth, and could grow it back that quickly. There was zero percent chance that any casual observer could tell. I could stop any month I wanted, or skip a month to grow a little more before trimming. After 3 months, it looked good enough for me to stop trimming for a while and concentrate on making more hair! :)

--I'll share for fun, but you can't really tell a difference in the hemline from these pictures:
https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1579/26733305556_63d858d54e.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/GJkbnj)trimmingseries (https://flic.kr/p/GJkbnj) by Mom and wife (https://www.flickr.com/photos/62007100@N08/), on Flickr
(Old siggies)

Now, I'm considering doing it again. The ends are looking a bit thin, and I prefer a blunter hemline. It really slows down growth progress, but too bad, so sad. In the end, no one besides me knows that I'm trimming it, and I think it looks longer and healthier with thicker ends. :)

You do what you want. It's your hair, and should make you happy. :flowers:

I would just try to put it up for a month or two, baby the ends and try to forget about it (don't take pictures, and try not to look at it on the mirror). After a month or two, you can make a microtrim, and by then you'll still be solidly at hip even after the trim! Patience :grouphug:

Hi, all, I have a question for you.

I've been hovering between waist and hip for about three months now, and things have been going really well. But for the past two weeks I've experienced massive shed in my longer layers, and the ends are now scraggly. :( To complicate matters, for some reason I cannot figure out, over the past two weeks my hair has really been misbehaving--suddenly snarling and matting up, fairy knots, general unkempt appearance. I thought it might be a moisture or protein problem, but oil isn't helping. As it stands, I think I'll almost have to cut an inch or two, which is depressing. :(

For me, tangling and general misbehavior is usually a product thing. Anything from the water going on to my hair to S&C is suspect. I haven't had any sudden issues regarding hair, I guess because my hair has grown gradually and I haven't noticed a difference. So no, I haven't experienced a difference in behavior due to length, although I suspect it's easier for older hair ends to tangle than young, short, freshly cut ends. How often you wear it up might also have a bearing on this.
As for clarifying, I don't know your routine, but you might try an actual clarifying shampoo rather than ACV. ACV is great for my hair, but I don't think it can clarify, though that's often touted as one of it's miracle properties, same thing with baking (bicarbonate) soda. I think ACV might have some chelating properties (don't quote me on that, though), but not clarifying, or stripping product off of your hair.

Thanks very much for this response. I henna'd on Saturday and have noticed a substantial improvement in my hair's overall condition and behavior.... maybe it is just addicted to henna! But I am also definitely going to have to look up a different clarifying shampoo to see if that helps.

Sorry I had no other input for you; happy to hear the henna helped! :)

I Love Joico K-PAK Chelating and Clarifying Shampoo; it is stronger than the Neutrogena Clarifying/Anti-Residue.
I use the Joico every few months..... and Neutrogena twice a month.

So, I've been between waist and hip--at basically exactly the same length-- for at least four months now. What the heck? My hair was growing an inch a month between bra strap length and waist length, and now, it's suddenly stopped altogether. Am I at terminal or a false terminal length? I'm very confused because the bottom appears in good condition--very few splits It's slightly tapered in a normal way, but not even fairy tale ends. Anyone have any idea why it just seems to have stopped growing all of a sudden?

Wow....and inch a month is amazing; usually it is half that!
Sometimes it stalls....especially after a growth spurt.
If your hair is in good condition I wouldn't worry.
But it can be frustrating as you wait on a goal...that's for sure!
Put it up and forget it and in a few months it may surprise you

I wouldn't worry too much, sometimes hair will have a growth spurt then have a rest for a while. It will grow again. It's catching its breath after a sprint. Give it some time :)

By the way, I love your thick shiny braid on your siggy pic ! I'm always ogling at it anytime I stumble across one of your posts.^^

Thank you Mimha!! I finally feel like my hair is getting long :o

And thank you for the lovely compliment on my braid - it was actually one I did right before bed and I caught a look of it and had to take a picture! I hadn't realised how much thicker my hair is now it's all virgin  and isn't it typical my nicest braids are right before bed!

Speaking of, your signature pics are always catching my eye as well - you hair is so shiny it almost looms like molten bronze or something it's gorgeous. :)

Sorry, not the greatest picture, I'll try to get one showing more of my torso. This picture was taken in March. I am not sure if I'm waist or hip. Is it long enough to call hip? http://i63.tinypic.com/2rbyybb.jpg
Sorry, it's so big!

I'd say you need a bit more length for hip. But it's difficult to see without markers.

Thank you GG ! :flowers:

And as we are in the exchange of compliments, let me tell you that I love how your hair looks long, soft and full of beautiful nuances in your new avatar picture. So natural looking and unique !... :) (Well, you have changed your avatar quite a long time ago actually, but I had never told you how nice I found it^^).

Your hair is longer than mine if I judge from your specifications (hip). I'm presently a good inch or two above hip (almost there if stretched) and TBL is my first really important intermediate goal. The ultimate being terminal^^... if I am patient enough to ever grow there !

I don't know where terminal stands for me. Probably around knee, I would say. I don't know if I want to grow until there, though. Out of curiosity, certainly. But I still remember how fastidious it had already been for me at classic.

My second and main "intermediate" goal is actually mid-thigh / fingertips. I love how hair looks at this length and I would be very pleased to be able to grow until there and still have a nice looking hemline (= lovely ringletting fairytale ends, not just a few ragged lonely racers). Knee and + just seems an intergalactic distance, and for the moment I can't figure out yet how my hair would look/behave once beyond classic. So yeah... let's enjoy every bit of the journey and see !^^

Are you sure you "just" want to grow to TBL ?? Lol.

It does make such a difference when you pay attention to it!

I was long in the past ..into my 20's and then again in my 40's but never gave a thought to care...some thought went into style later but was minimal and nor protective/pro growth.

RebekahE, congrats on reaching hip!! You seem very close to BCL. Stunning mane... glorious hemline and colour :thud:

A growth spurt is happening. I have grown 0,75 inches in one week :blueeek::bigeyes:. I just washed my hair, and noticed in the shower that my ends *almost!* reach TBL (so I had to measure! I'm very very close to 37 inches now). Of course this optical illussion only happens in the shower, with plenty of water and conditioner, as straight as it can be . When it gets dry and wavy it shrinks back to somewhere between hip and BCL!

Wow, kganihanova, that is very pretty!

fiğrildi, yay for growing hair! That is a lot in one week!

Thanks for the welcomes on earlier pages, you all (maybe I should log on here more often...). :) The current plan is to get to knee for a couple years and then trim back some. Figure it'll take me 15-18 months to reach tailbone from waist; does that sound about right? (It's about 8-ish inches.)

ashyash
May 11th, 2016, 09:59 AM
Thanks Groovy Granny and Sarahlabyrinth--I'm definitely not planning to give up and call it terminal yet. I forgot to consider the fact that I trimmed an inch off four months ago and it's now the length it was before the trim or very slightly longer, so it *is* still growing. Just way more slowly than I'm used to.

I've also been getting a lot more comments on how long my hair is lately, so that has to count for something (most people tell me it's pretty, some people just say it's long and don't elaborate further.)

I think what makes me nervous is that I've never seen anyone in my area with hair longer than hip (though *lots* of women around here have waist-length hair)--it makes me think that the natural terminal length people are genetically determined to have is around waist. However, based on what I've seen here, I know that's unlikely to be the case. It's more likely that most people in my area are not actively trying to grow there hair beyond waist length.

kganihanova--I *love* crown braids! Yours is really beautiful and thick. I think it looks really nice with your hair color also!
RebekahE--Beautiful! I love how healthy your hemline is! It's evident you've been taking good care of your hair.

It sure seems so... but it may be because when you're growing out from a short style, you have more "body markers" to reference in length. There's a big gap between waist and hip, then hip to tailbone... but when your hair is growing from shoulder length, it seems like it grows like a weed.

Or when it grows from a pixie! It looks horrible, but gets all of the horribleness to shoulder pretty quick. :)

GG I am there with you. I have grown to FTL and it was such a bother. I hit TBL for the 3rd or 4th time last month and it is such a bother. I trimmed a little over an inch last Friday and so now it is not quite TBL but feels so much less annoying. TBL is nice aesthetically but hip is more practical for up and down wearing.

I plan to hover around hip/TBL until the last 3" of my layers are trimmed out which may be pretty soon. I don't really have any plans to grow past TBL again.

I'm waiting to see where the length becomes bothersome. Some days I think I want to grow to classic at least (especially when I attempt a new style and find I just don't have enough hair yet), then other days I'm sure it would be too much trouble. Wait and see....
For now, I think I may make hip by September,so I could make it to tailbone sometime next year, if it doesn't drive me crazy before then.

lapis_lazuli thank you! I sure hope so! :)

I'm really looking forward to being at a length with a solid marker! MBL, waist, and hip are all kind of 'call it when it feels right' marks because everyone's bodies are so different whereas BCL is more of a solid mark. There really hasn't been a solid 'yep! I'm there!' mark since, what? Bra-strap? It's really nice to be like, "I'm 2 1/2 inches away" instead of "I'm somewhere between 2 - 4 inches away. Who knows?" haha

I'm about 2 1/2 inches away from BCL, and much farther from TBL than I'd like to be. I thought I'd post two length pictures, because in one I'm wearing a dress which makes it kind of hard to tell length, and in the other, I have braid waves -- can't seem to get a good picture lately! Haha [/url]

Please ignore my crazy hem!
Welcome back ~ nice to meet you!

Crazy hemline????
All I see is gorgeous hair :thud:

Awww thanks GG! You always make me feel better about myself, you're really such a sweetheart! :o ((((Hugs))))

Wow...you too?! :agape:

Happy to have the company ~ you are an inspiration :flowers:

This is exactly why my goal is TBL?, I'm stuck on my goal being HL or TBL. My sister has TBL hair, and she as said to me that anything past hip gets to be annoying. She also warned me that if I get to TBL to be wary of "butt floss"... I'm sure you guys know what I mean

Oh my goodness! I've never even considered that! Hair getting stuck in my armpits is irritating enough! lol!

Sometimes I think the measuring tape is broken

Stupid, malfunctioning tape measures!:steam

I personally like blaming the husband who is reading the tape. But then he said what's wrong with 34.75" (which I call 35") and then he asked me to measure his stretched out curls at an astounding 24" catching up with me fast and then I just want to punch him in the eye. Drama.

Groovy Granny, thank you! :heartbeat It's nice to meet you, too!

On the topic of hair getting stuck in strange places, last time I washed my hair, it got stuck in belly button. That's a feeling that I'd rather not have twice!

quirkybookworm: you need not worry, your hemline looks perfect :o

Wildcat diva: when in doubt always blame the hubby. That's my motto haha :bigtongue: Maybe there is some spousal sabotage going on with his competitive tae reading?

Also ooooooh man I hadn't even considered the butt floss issue.... I already find hair everywhere in my house, car, shower, bed, and on my person... haven't experienced that yet though haha!

I absolutely hate having my hair touch my nethers. Yes, this is an issue. I am pleased to say my 1.25" trim nipped that at least for another couple months.

Horrorpops, I like the way you think. I can just negate anything he says.
Surely this is longer than 34.75"?

Ok don't answer that. I'm not going to leave here yet. Things will be solid soon enough...

Oh wow! Your hair is pretty!
It does look longer to me. As I'm quite tall, not even the 37.5" I have now look as long as your hair.. :(

Wildcat Diva, wow! That looks long! I'm a horrible judge of lengths (For example, I thought that I was nearing waist when I was actually nearing hip ), but that looks right at TBL to me.
Either way, you have beautiful hair, and if you're not there yet then you should be any day now.
