Why would it be cheating anyway? Your longest section is still how long your hair looks. :blossom: Besides, even layered hair doesn't mean that every strand is the same length.

agreed! I have layered hair and go by my longest layer too.... lol, actually I even measure based on my 6 some racer hairs who are about a 1/2" longer than the rest of my bottom layer. I started with just 3 or 4, so now that there are at least 6, I feel it was justified! ha, they are catching up!!!!

This just reminds me that after almost 2 years at LHC I still have yet to measure my hair... but I just bought a tape measure. So maybe I will....and measure what hip, tailbone, classic, ftl and then goal are too, while Im at it. It's just that the number never meant as much to me as the overall visual impact and in fact it has been a pet peeve when people's length is only described in numbers because then I can't visualize it. But it could be interesting to see what my numbers are and it might give me more of a feel for the meaning of other's measurements, too.

I can appreciate the visual milestones, but I tend to prefer the numbers because if someone has a similar thickness to mine, we can probably do the same styles at the same inch measurement even though my hip length is some people's midback/BSL, whereas my hip length and their hip length are very different so if they just list hip length then they might have another 5 inches of hair that I don't have to work with. So, if I see a style picture somewhere around here, I like to know their inch measurement to know if it's worth bothering to try to do it myself.

That's a good point. I know we have some very tall members here, up to 6 ft tall. It would be very interesting. I definitely get jealous when people at my length can do a lot more buns than me. I thought I'd be able to do a lot more at waist than I can, because of others posts. I thought I could pull off an infinity or spidermom bun at waist, I was really hoping. But there are so many other factors to consider.

Still damp, but I liked it enough to take a picture. Layers are slowly catching up (why did I think it was a good idea to put them back in??) and I feel like I'm solidly at the top of hip now, even after a 1.5" trim earlier this month.

I feel like every time I get closer to TB my ends get really thin and I have to trim them. Although it is gradually edging closer it's very frustrating. If the end of my braids weren't so thin I wouldn't bother cutting it as the ends aren't actually split. Does anyone else get the same? Feels like this stage is going to be really slow.

Yes! I get that as well, so for the past 2 years I ended up trimming about 10 cm every summer to get rid of the taper..It feels like I'll never ever get there.

Thanks! The layers aren't nearly as drastic as they used to be and they blend much better. They're now only in the last 4-5", so I feel like it just makes my hemline look scraggly. I had them cut back in in May to get rid of the rest of the bleach damage, so at least it's much healthier now. I'm just longing for a blunt, gentle U hem at BCL :)

This has been me for YEARS. I've hovered between waist and hip for about 5 years. I finally realized that my hair was just too fine and fragile to highlight (or later, sun-in) if I wanted anything longer than waist. So, I've been growing out my natural color for 2.5 years (it's about APL) and I'm hoping that this time I'll be able to make it to BCL with a decently healthy hemline and then maintain, maintain, maintain until it's 100% virgin. Still, it's taking forever to get there.

Oh absolutely! I'm in maintaining mode rather than growing mode, and have been microtrimming out layers and mechanical damage for 2 years. I've got another 2 years' worth of damage to go, and there are days where I wish I was further along the path than just halfway... The incremental nature of hair gains can make it hard to see improvements day-to-day - I find I have to look back several months to 'see' the gains, especially now that I'm measuring those gains in terms of hem thickness, not length.

Thanks FireFromWithin :) It helps me keep my perspective and patience intact to 'look back in order to look forward' :)

I have pics from Feb where my bangs are just above my cheekbones, and now they've become a face-frame layer almost at chin. I hadn't felt like it had been growing much at all this past year but the photos don't lie - clearly it has :) And that's with a monthly dusting of that layer!

I've noticed something else - the more my thickness travels downward, the thinner my ends look to me compared to the thickness above it, even though I KNOW they've thickened up with the microtrimming and can prove it to myself by measuring. I find that can make it feel like backsliding, although what's actually happening is just a priority shift - that the hem thickness at longer lengths becomes as or more important than length itself. At least that's how it is for me, and that adds to the amount of time the journey will take :)

I'm of the same mindset. Hip length on me is only like 23"! So tailbone is only 26. 26 inches on many ladies is barely mid-back length. I still feel like my hair is short, and I am clearly tailbone length already, but I do have to wait on my thickness to travel downward after a bad bout of postpartum shedding in early 2013.

Oh yeah I'm only 5'2, which is why tailbone is only 26" on me. I'm only 62" tall total, so classic length (half of body) is 31". I thought I was a bit delusional in measuring, but I did it several times, and being only 62" tall, half of my body can only be 31" long. Seems like it is taking forever though. I need another 5-7 inches to feel comfortable claiming classic length.

I am half an inch from tailbone right now. Maybe.... I might actually be jus on tailbone. Well hair is long enough to get caught on pants waist. And a bit past bcl... But i have not measured yet.

Does not matter. I will be maintaining at tailbone for some time. About to have a baby this december. So i am anticipating post partum shed. Will probably just wear my hair up for the first six months or so, then trim to tailbone. Then depending on how thin it got i might maintain and let longer hairs catch up. Or i might head on to classic. Either way... I will be at the exit door for this thread for a bit longer.

Congratulations on the baby!

My son was born 12/03/2012 and I had a lot of postpartum shedding by February of 2013. I hope you don't have it! I wish there was no such thing! I'm still recovering from it (well my thickness is back but it has to grow down to the ends, which are thinner from that shedding).

I suspect you're measuring from your crown, not from your front hairline. The front hairline gives a more accurate measurement because it's hard to place a tape measure at the exact same spot anywhere else on your head by yourself, or even with someone else's help. Also, classic is often further down than half the height. The average leg length is about 45% of height, so at 5'2" the average leg length is 28 inches, leaving classic closer to 34 inches from the top of the head and in probably the 42-44 inch range from the front hairline.

(Measuring from the front hairline also gives a larger number to start off with, which makes it FEEL closer to the goal since you're that much higher of a proportion of the way there. It's pure psychology but it can make a big difference when it comes to getting bored or frustrated with lack of progress. Something to consider.)

I was at hip when I cut 3+ inches of tapered ends last weekend. I was so sad afterward (you know how it is), but I really want to get rid of my layers. I had my boyfriend take a photo last night, and I was revitalized when I saw an actual hemline emerging :]. I'm still past waist, but it feels like tbl is soooo far away!

I agree with FireFromWithin about this part of the growing journey taking a looonngg time. I keep thinking that I'm almost there and then little splits start poking out and I reach for the scissors. "Just a tiny trim to get rid of the splits" is costing me serious growing time! No more trims until after the New Year at least. Sorry for the bad angle on this pic. At least you get an idea of the length.

I changed conditioners to a heavy moisture one. Lord knows I can't use it in the summer or spring or fall but it's working for now. All this indoor heating is drying my hair out!!

I normally use a light conditioner and very little of it but now I'm finding I need to use more and a heavier formula than usually works for me.

I think the easiest thing for me, at least, is to go by pants waistband than. I'd love to hit hip in the front, but I get the feeling that I'd be TBL before that happened. I'm still only can I call this waist from the front, but a bit past waist in the back.

It takes me about a year to go from waist to tailbone, so just be patient guys! You can do it!

I've stopped measuring my hair for a year now and it's made me forget about how long my hair is. I just use body markers instead. Measuring hair is useful to see progress in the short term but my hair goal is just to maintain so I don't need to see progress.

Top of the hip bones on the sides! Sometimes that's near where your pants sit but it depends on the pants. It shouldn't be too hard to line up a pair of sweatpants to that level when you want to check, though.

I think it's really your call :) TBL is one of those markers that's so open to interpretation - some call it literally according to where their actual tailbone lands (which falls differently on each of us), some call it visually when it 'looks' like it's where the average tailbone ends, somewhere around the halfway point between BCL and classic. As far as I know there aren't any LHC police who are going to show up on your doorstep with a warrent due to falsification of a tailbone claim, hahaha!! ;)

I happen to be one of those who goes with the more visual way of marking TBL, so gauging from your pic if it were me I'd be waiting until it's just a bit longer to call it. But it's *your* hair so if you chose to call it here I'd support you on it :)

Thanks for your opinion on my length. I agree, TBL is very subjective. I think you're right, I should have a bit more length needed to claim TBL.

I have also seen TBL as claimed when the hair brushes the chair when sitting. I'm about an inch to an inch and a half from that point. I'll stick in this thread for a bit longer :)

Yes, I've seen the chair thing used as the marker too - for me that would equal classic because of the difference in the tip of my pelvis between sitting and standing :) There are so many differentials with the tailbone marker in particular - not just body structure and proportion but posture as well - it really does make it an individual call, I feel :)

That's why I indicated what my personal marker is, for context. Go with your own comfort zone, I won't call the LHC cops on you, I swear! Hahaha!!!

According to the picture i took in the beginning of december (it's in my album) i'm almost hip length... BCL and TBL are around the same marker for me maybe there's an inch or so difference... I plan on calling it TBL when i hit the part where my tailbone actually is as i go by my actual body markers.

Hey everybody, it has been a while. School is eating my life :p Being in my masters is so hard :( Anyway, my hair is 36" atm, and I'll be maintaining in 2016 :)

Good luck to you, Johannah & that's great about your hair! :)

So I took a picture while seated, and I've got about 6+ inches before my hair touches the floor when seated. Somehow it looks much longer when standing!

Tailbone length seems so far away!

If it makes you feel better, most peoples' pelvises tuck under when seated on the floor versus standing upright, elongating the lower spine and thus lengthening the tailbone downward, so the tailbone measurement changes from standing to sitting depending upon the degree of that pelvic tilt :)

I think you're much closer to tailbone than 6" :)

Ah yes, you definitely have the pelvic tuck thing going on there, that's why the jump suddenly seems so long - that's what's artificially stretching that distance to tailbone when you're sitting down :)

I don't mean to be intrusive by pointing out features on anyone's anatomy - it's just that I'm a dance instructor so body mechanics are an inherent part of what I do ;)

Vanilla

I appreciate it, not intrusive at all! As a child, I used to figure skate and do ballet, and I remember my instructors always told me to tuck my butt down for most of the poses. I probably still do it involuntarily as an adult.

Hi again! It's been a while, lol.

A new milestone for me: I now have to move my hair around and pool it in my lap when using the toilet. I've never had to do that before. :p
I'm BCL now, and sooo close to TBL. My ends are an inch or so from touching the chair. I'll hit TBL by spring for sure.

I'm trying to get into the habit of doing this when my hair is loose so that it doesn't sneak up on me.

I'm still about 5 inches away from my hair touching the chair/floor when I sit down but only about 2.5 inches away from tailbone. I'M SO CLOSE! Tailbone is only a little more than 3 months of my full growth rate, so by the beginning of spring I should be close enough to start thinking about calling it.

Hit tailbone and trimmed back to an inch under hip. The shorter layers were fairytailing and I wanted to touch these up as much as I could before the 2016 no trimming challenge. Looks like I'll be in this thread for a while yet :3 How can you tell if you have pelvic tuck?

I am currently just shy of TBL. This is as long as my hair has ever been and I'm super excited!!! I am starting to actually feel like my hair is long. It's strange how your perception of "long hair" changes the longer your own hair gets. :-) I started off with a goal of BCL. It seems like my goal is more fluid than I thought. I changed to TBL as soon my goal of BCL was reached. Now I'm thinking I need to change my goal to Classic. :-) Does anyone else alter goals once the original is met?

I keep altering my goals before I even get there. At first I thought it would be nice to get to BSL, then when I got past APL I thought hip looked nicer, then when I got to midback I pretty much gave up on "I'm only growing as far as (something) and no further" goals and I'm just looking at milestones as I come to them. I figure I'll get sick of the length eventually and cut back to where I was last really happy with it, but I don't think that's coming up any time soon.

bunneh.
December 18th, 2015, 06:06 AM
Oh yes, I alter them before reaching them as well... In just a month or so after joining LHC I went from classic to terminal as a goal xD I have no idea what terminal is on me, I have no idea how I will feel about my hair along the way, but braids that go all the way down past bum are sooooooooooooo pretty... My hair has been TBL before (nice, thick, blunt-ish hemline) so I have high hopes/expectations for my terminal length to be much longer.

Thanks! It feels really good to finally be there. I went 19 months between hip and BCL.

As to the goals growing as your hair grows... shortly after getting here to LHC, I decided I really liked the look of knee length hair. I've since decided anywhere classic to knee will be totally wonderful. I don't imagine wanting more than knee, at least not right now.

I also decided I really liked knee length hair...

I came here with the goal of waist, maybe hip. Somewhere in that range. Well now I'm at that goal, on my way to hip. First, I saw TBL hair and thought "Oh thats more of the area that I want than hip is." Then I aw classic and thought it was so cool, like a huge milestone. It seemed special to me and I liked the look so then I wanted that. And then after admirning people with floor and knee length hair I started to really admire that, and the hairstyles you could do with it. Floor is a lot to commit to though and it can get in the way, so for now I made my goal knee. Now I plan on growing to knee, maintaining until I think I have gotten rid of all the taper I can possibly get rid of (like Cinnamonhair, who was my ,main inspiration, along with Sailor Moon & The Tale of Genji) and then if I want to grow more afterwards, Ill decide then....so I definately have had morphing goals

I joined with BSL, wanting waistlength hair. I soon reached that goal and wanted more, which resulted in me growing to hip+ where I am now. I had some phases where I really wanted mid-thigh or classic but now anything between waist+ and BCL is fine with me.
I reached solid waistband length on my low-cut jeans recently. :) I remember when I reached the waistband of my high-waisted jeans and felt soo good. Now, it's even better!

LHC effect! I was just browsing albums and had the same thought. I started at almost APL and thought BSL would be perfect. Then I thought waist would be ideal. About hip I decided TBL would be it. Now...classic. Haha! And also *tears* because it feels light years away!

I think this is the key for me. I want classic or longer, no need to go longer than knee, but most importantly, I want a hemline that makes me feel proud to let it down and show it off. I don't really care for the wispy fairytale ends on my hair. I prefer a slight U-shape, mostly blunt hem.

My 5th day hair in the morning, just finger combed on 24th Dec. before I wash it. Waves have loosen into large bun waves, and I kind of like the way it falls and catch both the warm light of the lamp and the gloomy light of the winter morning...

I'm getting so close to tailbone, my first goal. I'm only an inch away from BCL. But my ends are really starting to bug me. They're a lot blonder than the rest of my hair, and stick out straight and tapered from braids. I really want to take a good inch off, but that's what I did in October, and it still feels too soon to trim. Ugh.

Here's a photo of my growth for the past four months-I'm currently somewhere in between waist and hip.. It's interesting because I last trimmed my hair a few weeks before the first picture was taken, and the hemline looks like it's getting better as it grows even though I haven't trimmed it again. (It might be because my hair was in layers and they are growing out).

That seems to be a very nice growth! From what I've heard hair grows faster in summer than in winter so if you live in the northern hemisphere that might be the case why it grew faster in the first two months. :)

Mimha Congratulations on reaching waist! It's gorgeous!

Thank you maskedrose ! :)

Btw, I have seen your one year comparison shots : I honestly think that your head of hair is one of the most beautiful I've seen here in terms of hair quality and beauty, if not (yet) in length... at least if I trust my own criteria for what I personally consider as dreamy hair^^ :flower:

You're making me blush! Thank you so much :)

It's still improving in quality - I still have old sun-in and highlight damage from about APL downwards that I often get frustrated with. It's only this year that the ends have felt healthy enough at hip to attempt to grow longer. Since I joined in 2007 I've grown to hip and chopped it to BSL/waist more times than I care to admit. It was only when I decided to embrace my virgin color 2 years ago that I've seen significant improvements. On bad hair days, its very easy to see the difference between the virgin half and the damaged half. I'm really looking forward to maintaining at BCL in 2017. I'm expecting my taper (which starts at the damage) and dryness of the ends to improve drastically as the virgin lengths move downwards.

Thanks, Mimha! Yours looks great too, and long for waist! A lot of people join with hair that looks shorter. Your hair is also very thick and shiny, cant wait to see it at goal!

Markedrose your hair looks good too! I love the color and it looks so long and soft. Like in a pre-Raphaelite painting.

Hello, everyone, I am really excited about being able to rejoin this group! I finally made it back to waist this month!

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x45/simonebeauvoir2/Waist%202015_zps3vqdnkfo.jpg (http://s182.photobucket.com/user/simonebeauvoir2/media/Waist%202015_zps3vqdnkfo.jpg.html)

This is four years since I had to shave my hair off for cancer treatments, so I am indescribably happy to have reached this milestone and be well on my way back to my goal length of fingertip. Next stop, hip! :happydance:

What an inspiring head of hair! I'm curious whether you trim at all?

Your hair is gorgeous Meliel!!! I can't wait 'till I get to tailbone!

I'm becoming discouraged. Many of my hairs are split. I've never dyed or bleached my hair and I flat iron once every 2 months, probably less. I really love long hair but I don't know if I can deal with all these "rules". I love wearing my hair down and occasionally using heat on it. And I think I'm ready to change my color. I may want to even get some layers put in.

I'm going to the salon in a few days. I haven't been since this time last year for about 4 inches cut. While I'm not going to cut my hair short, I'm going to change the color and cut. I'm pretty excited!

Mariakatija: I don't see anything wrong with with enjoying your hair and changing things up! It might take longer to reach your goal, but at least you can better enjoy the ride this way. What's the point of having so much hair if you can't have fun with it? And I agree that if there are a lot of split ends, you should trim them off.

Welcome Shorty89. :)

My hair grows very slowly at the moment. It is maybe the effect from winter and coldness. I have noticed same earlier years too. Is there anyone else with this same "problem" and have you found something that could speed the growing?

I've been in this thread for about 15 months and I'm still at least a couple of months away from graduating but it feels like it's taking sooooo loooooong. :justy: I did it to myself with trims, I know, but it's also quite a ways from waist to tailbone. I guess I should consider it practice for the patience it's gonna take to eventually (if my hair allows) get all the way from classic to knee, which is 11 inches and definitely the longest stretch for me.

It could be worse, I guess. I could still be chopping my hair back to my earlobes several times a year out of frustration with it not doing anything at shoulder length like I did for most of my teen years. shudder:

I think I have reached BCL, when my hair is straight (out from the shower) it definitely brushes BCL. But since it's always wavy when dry, not sure if I can claim it or not
It's difficult to find a place where I can get a decent picture to show the lenght. This is what I have from the moment (first week of january). I'm starting to get fairytale ends because I've ony trimmed an inch last year. Really need to get another trim very soon, even though I quite like the fairytales :)

I'm too wishy-washy to make a plan and stick to it. :couch: I can aim for milestone goals but committing to a care routine (whether that's trims or no trims or deep treatments every x days or whatever) inevitably means that a few weeks down the road I start to resent it and that's the opposite of the point. I admire the fortitude of people who can do it though.

More or less. If growing goes better with few/no splits I'll start growing more earnestly. I'm really playing it by ear. Maintaining is rewarding sometimes but I find it frustrating when I want to be back to TB. I can do so much more with my hair at TB>

If you don't want to go looking for your tailbone yourself (and who could blame you?) you could call tailbone at mid-bum, or an inch or two above if you want to call it sooner. Nobody's going to generally say you're wrong wherever you call tailbone because folks call it all over the top half of the bum and it's not like we can point at a spot and tell you you're wrong since it's all under your clothes. Some milestones are visible in fitted clothes (waist is narrowest point, classic is the bottom of the bum, etc.) but hip and tailbone are more subjective because we don't have x-ray vision over the internet.

Im a lurker! So i feel like the few times i post, its so rare that no one knows me. So kinda awkward to post a continuation of my progress and at the same time feeling like no one knows me... But oh well. Here i go.

Im graduating! Im firmly at tailbone. True physical tailbone. Which is an inch past bcl for me. Sadly i have no proof of this feat right now. I have a tiny little newborn baby girl! So no time to play with my hair and straighten it to take pictures of tru length. But i shall take a picture when i get my day for me. ( which is leaving my lil baby in her daddys care while i go unwind )

But yeah. Im off to the tailbone to classic thread. Ill be there for quite a few years as i plan to maintain classic untill my baby is old enough to give me some time to myself more than just the odd me-day once in a blue moon. Thank good for husbands!

When pulled straight, I have a visible number of hairs at 33.5 inches according to my mom. My growth rate has definitely slowed down this winter compared to its usual. If I don't hit a growth spurt, I should hit tailbone some time in May, but I maintain hope that spring, sunlight, and the return of cheap veggies might herald a growth spurt for me and I can get there sooner.

My hair growth has finally started to pick up a bit, after the Great Shed of 2015. Hair is about an inch past hip, based on my last picture, so I'm on my way to tailbone! I need to measure again at some point, and there may be a trim in my future (I've been S&D-ing to keep the tangles at bay), but hopefully just a teensy one.

Your wave pattern is amazing too : so regular until the very end ! :crush: Don't be desperate : your virgin hair is most probably stronger than the bleached part and when it has reached down, it's more than probable that you'll experience an increase of length. Thank you. I'm not sure it is thicker, it doesn't feel like it. My ends have always thinned like that.

I had a trim in July. I will likely have another one next summer. I have to travel and pay too much currently to find a hair stylist who knows how to cut curly hair. :/ so, the basic answer is mostly letting it grow.

Charts don't help much, really. Everyone's growth rate and milestone measurements are too different, and the spots they place the markers are often wrong. You're better off measuring the distance and dividing by your growth rate. Like, I have 8 inches between waist and tailbone, I usually grow 0.75 inches every month, so I'd only spend about 11 months in this thread with no trims. But, I'm unnaturally short-torsoed and my hair grows unusually fast. Most people have a much longer journey.

Welcome to the thread, and congrats on reaching waist :) I'm sure you can get to hip by the end of the year, even longer if you don't trim at all (I'm shorter than you, but got a long torso. I was at waist in january last year, and now I'm at BCL when stretched, so you can make it too ;) )
Maybe you could join the no trimming 2016 thread? How are your ends looking now? (picture, picture)

I'm still a stubborn half inch from TBL. Once I get there I will probably trim back again to hip or so. In fact, I may never grow past TBL again. We will see. I like the aesthetics of TBL but it's so annoying.

@ Wildcat Diva Your curls are beautiful! :cheer:

And WaitingSoLong... I am pretty much in exactly the same situation as you are. I was at 36 inches but cut off an inch plus back to 34.5 inches a few weeks ago during the lunar cycle full moon. Good news as wacky as it seems-- I am already back at 35 inches!! just a couple weeks later. But, it IS so frustrating to be so close to TBL but just needing to trim back an inch due to growing out layers. I hear ya sistah!

Growing away~

I did a trim recently because my hemline looked weird (to me), and I wanted it straighter, thus pushing back the day I reach TBL by a little bit more.

I noticed today while it was wet after washing, that I have made it to tailbone. Unfortunately, I don't think I'll be graduating. The great postpartum shed is upon me and I lose a fist full every day, leaving my ends very thin. I'll probably need a trim of several inches at least. I'll need to get some photos and see what everyone thinks.

You could do a microtrim, neaten up your hemline, and see how you feel after :) For the record though, you have the most gorgeous hair and can definitely rock the fairytale ends!

Alex Lou I would NOT cut it at all. If the ends are bothering you microtrim monthly for a few months, but I don't think you need to. If you're not into microtrimming but want to get rid of the ends then trim, but I don't really think you would need to trim more than 1 inch.

I love momschicklets' advice, haha!!

I think it looks pretty fantastic just the way it is, but I do understand your desire for thickness at the ends - I'm that way about my hemline too :) I'd say my hem last summer was about where yours is now (minus those gorgeous waves), and last Aug I took about 2" off and it did wonders for the look and for how I felt about it :)

In truth, at the time I had over 12" of thinned out ends that needed to go (and I've been microtrimming for 2 years so it's been a long road) but that 2" was just the boost I needed to stay my microtrimming course as I'm waiting for the bulk of the length to catch my hem. The incremental nature of microtrimming, although very effective, was testing my patience.

I chose 2" because I felt it was enough to make a real difference to how my hem looked and felt, and because if it turned out that I hated it, it was only a 4-month sacrifice of growth - a drop in the bucket really compared to the entire length this journey's taking me ;) In the end it was a great decision for me - really brought my hem back to my satisfaction and I've regained all that length now.

It may give you just that little lift you need until the post-partum shed eases off. Or... you might want to just keep it up until the post-partum time is done and then decide - there's no right answer on that one, it's totally individual. For the record, my post-partum 'symptoms' lasted throughout the time I was nursing my youngest child - once he was weaned the hormones started to settle back to normal. Whatever normal is... ;)

Whatever you decide, definitely flip that hair around all romantic-like! It's beautiful! :D

It has been a long time since I last logged in. My hair is past waist, but not yet at tailbone length. I was pregnant last time I was logged in. My shed was insane. I had bald spots for a few months. But the little fuzzy hair grew back. The thickness to my pony tail is less. But not enough that I felt like I should cut it. I am pregnant again. And so my hair is growing faster than normal. So maybe I will get past tailbone sooner! And hopefully the shed that follows doesn't kill my thickness. Hopefully I can measure my hair and get a new profile picture soon.

Alex Lou, why don't you try micro trimming for a while if you want to thicken your ends? I've been doing it for a few months now on my ends and it has made a world of difference with no major loss of length. You could try it, rather than just cutting inches off. I know that, for me, that would be very traumatic.

HazelBug, that's such good news that your hair is growing faster during this pregnancy. I also found this with my first baby, as my hair had been at hip-length for six years, and it suddenly started growing again. I'm not sure how much it grew, but I didn't notice a postpartum shed at all, and my hair ended up continuing to fingertip-length, when I had thought that hip-length was terminal. I hope that your new growth rate continues, and that the shed isn't so bad this time.

Since my second daughter, who is almost 2, I had the most terrible shed, and ended up with only a few strands at fingertip-length, so, after my first trim in 14 years, it ended up at my waist, and, after another 3 trims, has only gained 3 inches, so it is now at hip-length. I've decided to have one more trim next month, using the Lunar Chart, to see if this helps with the growth, as I don't think it has grown at all since the last trim, which was in October.

So I was pretty sure I was going to cut 4-5 inches on next opportunity. But with all the encouragement, I've changed my mind. :crush: I love the look of natural hemlines, fairytale ends, drastic taper, and thin hair. But for some reason I am more critical when it's on my own head. But I think I'll just try to ignore it. I put it up most of the time anyway and benign neglect always grows it best. I may end up deciding to trim anyway since the shed isn't nearly done. But 1 or 2 inches is much more reasonable, you all are right.

I keep thinking that there must be some advantage to the growth during pregnancy, but I can't figure out what it would be since you lose it all as soon as you deliver. The strands stay in the growth phase while pregnant, I believe, but that means that all those extra growing hairs are just waiting to go into resting phase and then fall out a few months later.

Is that color your natural color?
No. It's a boxed dye that I used to cover up bad ombre. But I love the color and will keep it up. It gives my aging natural red a boost.

@AlexLou: I think your hair looks nice, too. When my hemline bothers, I trim 1/2" every month for 3 months, and usually it's cooperating nicely again.

My ends seem velcroey, so am S&Ding more frequently. Aiming for weekly, but sometimes it doesn't work out. I might trim 1/2" or so on the equinox. I sort of had in my head that growth progress would slow around WL, because the accumulated wear and tear would finally take its toll on the ends. Ya. I do wear it down sometimes because that's how I enjoy it and have fun. Slower growth is a small price to pay. :)

It'll grow, it's just slower. Tailbone will come.

ETA:
FWIW: When I had babies, I shed 4 - 6 months after delivery. Massive sheds. (My hairdresser gasped. Yes, she did! And I had a teensy pixie at the time!)

@AlexLou: I'm a faded redhead too. Just throwing this out there: Henna. It's VERY permanent, but if you want red hair until you're dead, it's the way to go. (The rock-solid, shiny, no-fade red is exactly what I love about it.) Just saying it out loud. :)

I love your hair!! I didn't know you henna'd! Now that you mention it, I can totally see it!
My hair is actually slightly more...orangey blonde than this. I think the lighting was bad in my photo, my hair was still sorta damp/oily, and makes it look more true red, but man henna is a real big pain to photograph. If I stood a couple of inches closer to my lights, it'd look like a totally different color, haha.

I actually think I will probably have to do another hemline cut- more aesthetic so I can keep my hemline straight- I think, in April or May. I did a big one in November before lightening my hair.
It must be the hairtype, but it feels like sometimes I end up cutting a LOT to keep my hemline looking 'right'...I've considered a Creaclip, because I saw some really good reviews on them! They cut a blunt hemline!!

I used to have layers, too. They are annoying to grow out. I have bangs/fringe, and I'm really happy I like them, because I HATED growing out layers, lol. That was the bane of my existence. I don't even remember how many I had- it was back when the scene look was really popular so a lot of people got razor layers...myself included.

Razor layers - ugh! Yes that's what I'm growing out now - that and pre-LHC damage. It's slow going, but I'm gaining ground. When I start to feel disheartened about how long it's taking I think back to how it looked at the start of the growing out back in Jan 2014 - huge difference from then until now. It's encouraging to know that you've won the battle of the layers - gives me hope!

I've been microtrimming every single month for the last 2 years, and I've also noticed that my hemline looks better with a bit of a larger chop taken from time to time. Maybe the sleeker types like us who want a really blunt hem need to trim it a bit more often or a bit more aggressively than more textured hairtypes, because there's no 'blurring' of the hemline so there's nowhere for the racer hairs to hide? Pure speculation on my part - I have no solid evidence to back up that theory, just a guess :)

And yes about capturing henna colour in photos - I keep trying and not getting anything close. I just threw up that sig pic quickly to give people an idea of my length and texture, but the colour is SO far off what it looks like in real life.

In any case it looks like you're going to be at TBL pretty soon and graduating out of this thread if you're choosing to go longer :D

I'm pretty sure you're right about straighter hair being less forgiving when it comes to hemlines. I think that the wavies and curlies are able to get away with having a bit of taper and it can look really good and very...ethereal. Of course, some straighties on here look good with a sharp V, I guess it's all about personal preference. I think my hair is too flyaway since it's F/M and so if the hemline is too V...my hair goes EVERYWHERE. It's almost like the straight hemline keeps things orderly. This is also speculation on my part!

My usual is to do aesthetic cuts either once or twice a year to fix the hemline. I think my pics gallery has it, if not my blog definitely does, but there were times when my hair seemed to want to do a natural V and I have to cut off a lot and straighten it out. That's the frustrating thing. I wish my hair looked good with a V, since that's how it wants to grow, it seems, but NOPE!

I'm hoping so....I'm still a bit confused exactly where TBL is- I know I'm at BCL, and will solidly be there with thick hemline by April. Not sure exactly where to count TBL. I guess halfway between BCL and classic, I guess. That's what I've been pretending, anyway.

Oh, goodness, this rings true for me! Now I know why my hemline--especially the sides--has been bugging me once it kinda straightens after a few days (enough to tempt me to trim back to around BSL). Methinks straighter hair really is more unforgiving. Mine's fine with all the layers after a wash when it's all ringletty and curly and sitting pretty (the U is well-defined), but when it flattens out the tapering on the sides makes the layered ends look so thin, flyaway and sickly (like a skinny U with chunks taken out the sides where the waves visually eat into the hair bulk). Now I know to IGNORE ze flatter hair. If I don't, I'll never get past this waistish-hippish abyss.

But just remember how much more glorious your hair will look when you get there! I'm about 1.5 inches away from tailbone now and my hair's still only as long as tall/long-torsoed folks' hips and not very impressive at all, especially with all my layers tapering out the ends so that the bulk of my hair is still between apl and hip. Getting there faster doesn't mean anything if it still feels and looks short in the mirror.

browneyedsusan, I'm often tempted by henna, particularly since it improves the quality of hair. But I don't miss having bright copper/orange hair, and I think that's what henna would give me again. The box dye I use is much more subtle than my natural color used to be, and I love it! And it's close enough to my current natural color that I find myself having to periodically remind close friends and family that I dye my hair.

Alex Lou- I'm the same way, though I just don't want henna to build up any more color on me.

Have you tried cassia, which gives a light golden stain to the hair (less permanent) or sedr? (Which gives no stain at all)
They have cleansing and strengthening benefits, without the permanent red that henna gives. Their effects don't last as long, though.

Haha, Great Scott, gadzooks!! Mimha, you leave me speechless! ;) Hello, hairy tweenie twin!! :disco:

I did get curly ringlets before the perms, especially on rainy humid days, of course I get them now as well, but thought my new natural hair was straighter because it can look reeeally lifeless sometimes (also because I've been destroying my waves by combing right after washing). It's a bit confusing, since I seem to have many different textures all over (semi-straight strands, curly ones, and F, M and C hairs). But I'm happy to have figured out at last the "real" texture in the end ;)

I'm growing very fond of the fairytales, don't want to cut, but in the same time I'm looking forward to get all virgin hair and see how my natural ends will behave :bigtongue:

I think I will stick with 2b/2c for the moment, and will see if my texture keeps behaving like this after I have trimmed all the annoying ends. Seriously... they don't look as nice in real life, it's difficult to appreciate in the pictures but my permed ends are a mess!

I'm claiming BCL unstretched, measuring at 90cm. My trousers are marking the milestone :)
Also, considering the possibility of my hair typing being full 2b or even 2b/2c. I let it dry without combing right after washing yesterday, and woke up with these crazy waves today (no braiding). Ignore the last 5-6 inches, as it's curls from previous perms I'm growing out.

I'm especially loving your hair colour in this picture! Your waves are incredibly beautiful. And your growth rate is AMAZING!!

parkmikii, congrats on reaching BCL!! We finally got there at the same time  I suspect we're at about the same length, may I ask how many inches/cm is your hair ATM? Your hair looks so full, even when it's damp! May the follicles be with us, on to TBL we go! :happydance:

That is gorgeous hair! I think 2b/c even 2c is right. If you have a few ringlets somewhere (nape, maybe? and I even see some at the very ends, I think) then it is for sure 2c!

Lapushka, I don't think you're wrong, it's just that she said the last few inches of ends are from an old perm!

It's very very pretty! And it may be 2b or 2c.

Thank you! :puppykisses:

My nape is actually quite straight, and by 3rd day after wash, most of the waves and ringlets are gone. Today is day 5th and if you looked at me from behind you would probably classify my hair as 2a/2b.

WD is right, I can't tell for sure how many inches of perm do I have left, and even if it's just a few inches, those permed curls could be messing up with my wave pattern, making it look wavier than it really is. I used to get natural ringlets before the perms anyway, here's a picture of my virgin hair (and awkward layers) in 2011: http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=12476&d=1407661949

As you can see my underlayer is kinda curly, but the rest not so much :wigtongue

It all depends on whether or not those are bun waves at the ends! I'm pretty sure I make hip stretched, but I don't know about unstretched. I guess I'll just wait until Thursday, aka picture day! (I know I said measuring day in my other post, but that's tomorrow. It'll be easier to tell with a picture)

I'm hovering around waist/hip after trimming a few inches, recently. Think this might be the shortest my hair has ever been, haha Waiting to grow back to TBL!

Mine is actually the same; I have a hard time classifying it because I have curl explosions post shampoos or in humid weather, but as the week passes &/or in dry air I am very sleek ;)

Oh no! What happened at TBL? Were you unhappy with how it felt? I am hovering over TBL so I am interested in why you are saying this. :( Thanks!! ETA I have been kind of thinking the same thing. Originally my goal was classic at 42 inches but now that I am at 36ish inches with TBL at 37 inches, my hair is very thick and tangles horribly, and is very heavy and hard to deal with. ;( I am having trouble thinking about another 6 inches of tangles, conditioner, weight...etc. ;(

Okay, I'm officially joining. I'm just a bit past waist, hoping to grow to at least hip, possibly classic, but we'll see! I desperately need to update all my stats and signature!
This Is the longest my hair has been since childhood. I've been maintaining around BSL for the past 6 years or so.
ETA: I just measured and updated my stats. I am actually right at my original goal length (ahem, finally) from when I originally joined a looooooong time ago. Still kind of exciting though!
