Guys, I have been having some problems with velcro ends since my last trim, which was small and I posted on this thread. Did I not take off enough? I don't know what it is, but the only thing that helps even a little lately is vinegar.

Do these look dry or unhealthy?

Those ends look fine. When my ends get like that, I clarify and deep condition, and that usually resolves it for a while. The fact that your vinegar is the only thing that's helping makes me suspect that clarifying may be what you need.
(My clarifying shampoo is also a chelating shampoo, so I couldn't tell you for sure which one your hair needs. Chelating shampoos usually clarify though, I think. I use Avalon Organics Clarifying Lemon shampoo. It has lemon oil in it, which is what acts as a chelator, even though the bottle doesn't make any reference to chelating.)

The only thing that help mine when they get like that is either a chelating shampoo or trim as a last resort. However judging by the photo they don't look bad to me. :)

I agree. They look great in the picture but if they're causing issues then maybe chelating/clarifying will help.

I might try chelating. Since I went off sulfates, I tend to just use my mother's Garnier shampoo to clarify, but maybe I need something else.

My ends are the kind that stick together and tangle with ANY movement. I generally have to detangle with each pass while making a bun or else it won't be smooth. So I wrap/twist, detangle, wrap/twist, detangle, wrap/twist, detangle until I tuck the ends and put my stick/fork in. Does anyone else have fine hair that does this?

It can't just be me. I look at people who say they only brush 1 time a week and I can't imagine it. I detangle with my tangle tamer (knock off tangle teezer) and very gentle. I just disengage when I hit a tangle. Probably why I don't notice as my ends get worse and worse: because I detangle so often already.

I have to detangle a lot. I use a BBB and when I very carefully stand upright and arrange my hair, I have to detangle it a bit. I run my fingers through it a lot when making a bun etc. It comes with the territory, I think. I notice that it behaves better when its oiled since its not as floaty.

Kendrix, I second what everyone else says! My ends get that way every few months since I ditched sulfates, and I have to go back and clarify/chelate more often. We have lots of minerals in our water, so the chelating helps, as does following up every wash with an ACV rinse. Which I hardly ever remember to do. Usually the clarify/chelate cleans everything right up and my ends are smooth and tangle free again for a few months.

Well the hair looks really healthy but if it feels dry to you, some oil might do the trick. I will recommend Argan oil to anybody but there are other good oils out there too.

Mine too, but most of the time I just don't care and bun it with the ends undetangled... Makes a bigger, fluffier bun and I like how it look. :)

@FallingDarkness: Happy belated birthday! I'm sorry I missed it, and hope you had a wonderful day, and flaunted your gorgeous hair. :)

@Kendrix: I think your ends look pretty good. Did the chelating/clarifying help? (I get chelating shampoo at the Walmart hair salon: Joico brand.) Be sure to chase any clarifying with a heavy conditioner.

My velcroey ends usually straighten up with coconut oil: when it's damp from washing, rub a teensy bit of coconut oil between your palms and stroke down the last few inches of hair. Then, I sometimes let it loose to dry, or bun it up to sleep. It seems to help it behave itself. :) Let us know how it goes!

We are hosting DD18 's graduation party this Saturday. It's supposed to be cooler and nice. I'm hoping to wear a half-up to show off my length. Do you all think that's tacky, since we're serving food?

*sigh* I just cut back to some nebulous length in between hip and tailbone, so I have no real claim on tailbone anymore. I'm so bummed. I really wanted to be part of the whole Classic by Christmas thing, but I just couldn't stand how thin my ends were. I guess it's worth it to trim more frequently if it means I can have the blunt hemline that I want, even if it slows down my actual growth.

Thanks so much Dragon Faery and Kendrix!

I wouldn't think it's tacky browneyedsusan. You might want to put it up while you're actually preparing the food but as long it isn't horribly windy I would think a half up would be fine around food. Have fun! Congrats to your daughter!

I'm sorry ghost. Losing length is disappointing but hopefully this way you'll be able to enjoy it more as it grows.

Thank you :blossom: I was going to trim off another inch or two tomorrow, but I'm not sure I have the guts. I'd rather have imperfect-but-still-decent hip length hair, then cut back to "perfect" waist length hair and have to play the whole waiting game all over again. Waist looks really short on me :(

no no no. Food out = hair up. If you're not serving or preparing it miiiiiiiight be okay. :/ Save your halfups for going to dinner, not hosting. A change of Do might be in order though. A nice bun drop after dinner ;)

<sigh> Sometimes when I look in the mirror, my hair looks sooo close to BCL, and other times it looks more than 4 inches away. Am I holding my head differently? Is the hair slightly wavy some of the time (sometimes my 1c hair looks on the wavy side)? Am I imagining things? Should I just not worry about it, because I can't make it grow faster no matter what I do? Yes. lol!

I know I'm less than 2 inches away stretched (bcl is about 32" and I'm at 30.25") but whether it's freshly air dried 2c-ness or bun waves it always looks 3-4 inches away in the mirror. Whenever I get irritated at it, I leave it down for a few minutes and close my eyes and remember that it still feels like it's nearly covering my back so it can't be THAT far off.

Ones posture seems to have a huge effect near BCL. If I pull in with abs, looks like BCL is still far away but if I stand lazily, my hair is there already. It's too easy (for me at least) to tilt my hipbones or curve my spine with tiny changes in how I stand.

Agreed. I can go from 4" away to 1/2" away just by the way I am standing. I just try to stand tall every single time.

And welcome to the thread, Katyusha. :cheer:

I cut an inch a little while ago (went way too long without trimming; I should definitely make a schedule for that) and am now back at BCL. With a regular trimming schedule I will reach TBL a little longer, but with less interruptions.

I'm once again inching towards hip. It's nearly there wet, but still 2" or so away dry. I've been down this road so many times and I've always had to cut back to waist due to damaged ends. This time though, 98% of the old highlight damage has been trimmed out, and it feels and looks much healthier. There is still some damage from sun-in from shoulders down, but it doesn't seem to be as fragile as the old highlights were. I'll get a 1/2" trim later this year, but other than that I'm determined to get somewhere between hip and BCL and maintain for a good long while.

My hair (when I brush out my crazy waves) LOOKS at hip, and I've always been bad at measuring my hair but I'm pretty sure that hip was 32 inches or so on me and that waist was 29.5 so theoretically I'm there.... Goal length is 36 inches - BCL - so I'm ALMOST there. But by the time I get there I'm gonna want TBL, then classic.... then floor. Hopeless. LOL

Have I told you I'm back here again? :) In April I trimmed my hair from past TBL to just a bit past waist to get rid of all the old damage at once (I had a very prominent "dividing line" between my new hair and the old, pre-haircare ends which were very, very thin and dry). 5 years of microtrims took me nowhere, I only wasted time :( I had to go for one big trim.

So, that's me now. Pic from the end of June. I used too much protein which still shows here, but by now I am back to moisturised, bouncy hair :)

If it's past the tops of your hip bones on the sides, you can call hip any time you like. There's no good way to tell from a picture because it's different for everyone. What I CAN say from a picture is your hair looks fine to me, I'd probably throw a drop or two of oil on there, wrap it up in a bun, and it'll be right as rain in the morning.

I am almost *almost* to waist length. My hair is 26 inches long...Darn you parents for making me tall. Once i'm truly in the waist range I am likely going to cut off the bottom one to two inches (depending on the condition of my ends) to cut out the layers.

Thank you very much for your input Nique1202 :) I put some almond oil in it and made a bun overnight and now the condition is much better!

I am so close to TB it's frustrating. Feels like I haven't grown at all but wet and down my hair brushes my TB (doesn't look it though only when i feel where it is). I finally took some length shots. Please excuse bad lighting and bathroom setting, the longer my hair gets the more difficult length shot selfies are!

Wet hair: http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=18028&d=1436105435

Dry hair: http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=18043&d=1436192561

I feel like I need to take half an inch off the ends because of thinning. What do you think? It the thinning really obvious?

Also, I never realised how frizzy my hair was before I oiled it until I looked at the photos! Must remember to oil prior to future pictures.

EDIT: I know I'm sitting but due to the large amount of padding in my behind my TB is actually a couple inches higher than the surface. If it touched the surface it would be past TB and well on the way to classic (which seems to be about 3" past TB).

In the wet length shot the thinning is obvious, but when it's dry it's hardly noticeable at all! I'd go with just 1/2 inch off.

You guys, it's official. I'm calling hip. I've gotten 3.75 inches of growth this year so far, not including a .5 inch trim, and I called waist for my 1 year LHC anniversary on the 27th of January. But by the time I get there I'm gonna want TBL, then classic.... then floor. Hopeless. LOLYay! Congrats! :) :flower: And hooray for ever-expanding goal lengths! Haha!

I can tell they're slightly thinner than the rest of your length, but I don't think it's so thin that it looks bad. I think it looks nice. Hemlines are such a widely varying preference from person to person, though. If that were my hemline I'd be ecstatic at how thick it was. :) I'm built like you, too, with some extra padding below Tailbone that makes it so the "touching chair" will happen a few inches past anatomical Tailbone. Oh well ... I guess we get a bonus milestone! ;)

I finally gained some length in spite of my longest hairs insisting on shedding! I've been stuck at 37.75" ever since the end of May when I trimmed back to that, and now my ends are FINALLY at 38"! A few hairs are a little past that, but they'll probably shed out soon, and since it's only a few I don't really count them anyway. My hemline has been thickening up a little even without microtrims, since the longest bits have shed out, leaving the next-longest layer as my new longest. So I'm going to hold off on the microtrims for a while longer and just see what happens.

My longest bits have hit Tailbone, but it definitely doesn't look like it yet. Hopefully by the end of summer I'll be officially there. :)

I just had about an inch and a half trimmed off, back to can-I-call-this-hip. Couldn't be happier! My hair looks and feels a lot healthier now, even though there's still a few inches of old damage on the ends. Baby steps! I also got shorter, face-framing layers in the front, which I really like so far. It's always a bit sad to lose length, but I think it was worth it and I'm very happy with how it looks :o

I found myself getting too obsessed with my hair and LHC in general, so I've been taking some time off to just benign neglect my way down to BCL. I haven't measured or taken a length shot in months, and I LOVE it. I'm also enjoying seeing my waves and wurls more often now that I'm not combing and braiding every day. Makes life a bit more interesting.

THAT being said, I'm so close to BCL. I'd say I'm about 2 inches away when dry, <1 inch away when wet. I'm going to wait a while to call it, though. I'll probably hang out there for a while and trim off the old once-highlighted hair before moving on down to TBL.

What I like about my old highlights is that they're basically gone except for one barely noticeable strand in the front, which is how I visualize my progress without measuring. I was so happy when the demarcation line reached the top of my ear, then the bottom of my ear, and now it's almost chin length. :)

You could try experimenting with double buns. Double the work... but also means the weight is better distributed and buns that won't work on your whole head, such as nauthilus buns maybe, will work a treat :)
Have you tried LWB? I discovered these late but they seemed to require less length on me :)
Alternatively, a really high ponytail with a scrunchie, and then plaiting it behind, or buying a giant clip for super thick hair, twist upwards, clip down. Both of these will significantly shorten the hair :)

FallingDarkness, I've had the best luck with sectioned buns. Section half of your hair off (or more), make a bun with the first section, and then wrap the second section around the completed bun. It also creates a nice effect if you braid part or all of the second section. :)

I successfully did my first scalp only wash last night! :) I did a braid high up on my crown then held that up in the shower as I squirted diluted shampoo from a squirt bottle that looks like it's meant for condiments. It was a new squirt bottle so my dilution was different than usual and foamed up super well, it may have been too strong but it's fine, I don't mind. I've been massaging sesame and castor oils into my scalp the past few nights (actually I did it yesterday afternoon this time) and my shedding has gone down and my hair may be even softer than normal at the roots. The area that was my first braid notch is still damp right now since I washed so late but the method was a success nonetheless so I'll be doing this again.

For me it's the opposite, it takes longer from BSL to waist than waist to BSL... I keep trying to remind myself that as I go through the "mid back abyss" that when I get to waist hip isn't very far off, for me....

I heat styled my hair for a job interview, and I couldn't resist sharing. I blew it out on cool, and before I curled the ends (lowest heat setting), I was pleasantly surprised at how long it's getting. I'm solidly hip if I count it at the top of my hip bones, but I won't feel like it's properly hip until it reaches the widest part. For the first time in my long growth journey it still feels healthy and happy at this length, which thrills me.

Hubby measured me at 33 1//2 inches a couple days ago to TBL @36inches and told me my hemline is about 3 inches away from TBL!!! So... hopefully in 6-7 months I can graduate to the next thread TBL to classic!!! I am reading that several on LHC maintain at TBL for awhile to allow for their hemline to even and thicken up. Not sure if I will do this or just keep growing to classic at 41inches, my goal length. I am experiencing a bit of excessive shedding during shower detangling, and this does have me concerned as my ponytail circumference has gone from 4.5 in to 4 inches and I am noticing alot of breakage/new growth??? I can now do a stickless nautilus and can feel my hair weight getting heavier. Well, just wanted to post where I am at now. This is really taking forever to reach TBL!! Patience is a virtue, right??? :/

I have also noticed sadly, a few LHC friends who have trimmed back up to bsl and waist length, so they are not my hair length twins anymore. ;( Well hopefully they will grow their hair back again and be happy and have healthier hair this time around!! ;) It does get tempting to do this, as longer hair tangles more, sheds more easily and seems to take longer to dry, etc. But I am not cutting back. Nope~~ Staying the course to classic!! ;):knit:

Congrats on only having 3 inches to go, LongCurlyTress! :cheese:

I've been maintaining for the past year, I suppose, at hip-BCL length to grow out some damage and thicken up my hemline.. it seems like such a long journey to tailbone! Definitely going to just "race" to tailbone from now on.

I'm also tempted to skip the maintaining step at TBL, but I might do a bit of microtrimming.

I'm not going to maintain at TBL, either. I do my trimming as I go, when needed, so that when I reach a milestone, I'm really there, with a nice full hem.

So, I'm still hanging out between hip and BCL... seems like BCL is still so far away. Every time I look at my hair it seems to be the same length. I have to look back on older photos to see any growth at all. I usually take my measuring tape's word for it and believe I've grown another centimeter a month, but I never really feel like it's growing.

I decided I was at waist last month, but only recently realized that means I can join this thread! Although, I'm not sure I'll grow all the way to tailbone...part of me wants to continue on to classic, the other wants to cut after I reach hip. Somehow BSL+ seemed more flattering for my face and body than my hair does now...but I keep thinking about George Michael saying that classic is one of the "ideal" lengths, and I'd like to get there sometime, so why not now? All the pictures in this thread are really inspiring. It's so good to see hair that's so long in such great condition!

Hi again! I' ve been away from LHC for a bit again, and there are too many pretty pictures to comment individually, but you all have such lovely hair.

I'm finally calling BCL and I was hoping to have first length photo to show but apparently I'm really bad at taking selfies. Oh well, maybe I can get someone to help me in the next couple of weeks. I'm having mixed feelings of my hair. On one hand I really like it, but on the other I'm craving for a change of some kind. I hope that you are OK, Gamma Vector! That is a big change and it is awful not to get the chance to choose for oneself.

My hemline is rather blunt, between straight and U depending on the day. My hair is usually a bit more wavy than in these photos because I brushed it when it was still a bit damp this time. I'm just generally bored - long hair becomes sort of invisible when it is mostly up and behind my back. Maybe not indigo because I fear that it would be too dark but I am playing with the idea of growing out henna (but might not). I like the idea of face-framing layers, thanks for the suggestion, alishaxmarie.

I managed to take some photos and can't decide which ones to show so you get three. The photos taken outside are from where my dad grew up. I used to swim there every summer but this time it was too cold and windy for me.

Thanks Ava Rue and Nique1202 for the support. I'm expecting it to take about a year to get back to TBL. But, in the mean time, I have fabulous ends!

I have juuuust reached hip length, and on looking back at some of my pictures I realized it took me about a year to get here from waist :/
Mostly because since reaching waist I've had to do a couple of trims (my ends were highlighted years ago and they were so velcro-y) where I lost about an inch at a time. Then there's the fact my hair tapers a lot and it's not that thick to begin with. My goal is Classic but I'm starting to wonder whether I will ever reach that goal and have my hair look good...

Have you tried microtrimmin instead of occasional big chops? It tends to work well for most users who want to gain both thickness and length. I've been microtrimming for a year now and my ends are healthier and thicker now than they were at waist and I'm only a couple inches shy of BCL now. Don't lose faith!

I think I may do that from now on, but I'm unsure how to microtrim when my hair tapers so much. Do I just "dust" the very tip of the fairytail ends and leave the rest alone?

You can find different self-trimming methods on the Microtrimming & Maintaining thread (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=75468) but basically, yes just the tip. Over time, the tip will become a more significant portion/amount of hair rather than the teensy amount most of us self-trimmers start out with. However, if you want to maintain more of a V-shaped hemline to keep more of a fairy-tailed look, then there are methods for that on the microtrimming thread. Your exact method will depend upon the hemline you desire and what you find easiest to accomplish on your own. Luckily, you're a wavy so even if you manage to cut unevenly at first, it won't be noticeable anyway. So don't make the mistake of trying to fix a cut over and over since you'll just lose length that way.

Just checking in guys. I keep looking at my hair like: "am I there yet?" Seems like dry, I am an inch away? I dusted yesterday, trimmed only enough for my hemline to stay straighter. Maybe a millimeter or two?

I have people be really suprised when I point out my hair reaches my waist, people are like "oh, your hair doesn't look that long". I wonder if it is becuse I'm overweight, so my body to hair ratio is different?

Gonna look into learning to trim my hair myself, I can't afford hairdressers to get my hair trimmed, and anyway I have a deep mistrust of hairdressers after all the time where I've asked for "just trim the very tips, no more than a centimeter please" and then I walk out of there with 7-8 cms shorter hair...

Joining up with this thread, to encourage me not to cut back my now hip length hair. I'm about half an inch or so below hip (if my hand is any indication in this picture), but the ends are VERY thin due to the cut I got last year with layers. Going to microtrim to try to thicken up the ends while still gaining length - by my guess I have about 6" of hair to catch the shortest layers up with my hemline. Not sure about what my rate of growth is, but I'm going to guess about 1/2" a month, so hopefully I'll be there sometime around my birthday in March!

I know I've been kind of in and out of this thread... but I noticed that I have a really curved (lordotic) spine, so when I go into proper posture, my hair is just knocking on tailbone, whereas if I make my back do this weird archy thing it always wants to do, my hair is maybe a cm away from "classic" (but doesn't look it visually). So I'm waiting to call solid tailbone on a properly shaped back! :p

My back is jacked up, too. --scoliosis during childhood-- It looks super crooked in my siggy pics, but isn't usually so obvious. Something with putting my hands on my waist and trying to align my shoulders and hips just crinks it all up! lol! I'm solid waist on one side, and a little longer on the other!

I'd say it's more likely they say it doesn't look that long because of the taper and because so few people know where a proper waist is. Considering I've seen tbl hair described as "waist", people have some very weird ideas about what waist length hair is, and if there's a deep taper we often don't perceive hair as being as long as the very tip, most people see it as closer to where half of the hair volume is.

Once you've got the self-trims down and you've got the bottom to the point where it looks more like a line than a V it should feel and look a whole lot better and people will stop questioning waist length so much.

I finally chopped 3,5 inches of hair which brought me back to in between waist and hip unstretched. I did not like how the ends were looking see through which made my hair look strange because it was very compact up until waist. I do not regret it, my ends look thick and healthy right now and most of the tapper is gone minus the shortest layers which have not caught up with the length yet. :happydance: I still want to get rid of 0,5 (last of my damage) in my next trim but am not in a rush right now.

Happy growing everyone! :flower:

Ah so pretty! Your hair looks so silky soft even though the lighting obscures the shiny-ness I imagine it to have.I also love the braid in your siggy, what kind is it? :o Depending on when you consider the end of summer to be, I think it's possible you could make it. We seem to be at about the same length, I'll have to take a length shot soon since it's been like a year since my last one, whoops! How do you encourage your wave? I feel like my hair is so much straighter now :( well unless I cinnabun it that is...

Thank you very much gyhaslan and alishaxmarie!

The braid in my siggy is inspired by Anne Neville's one (https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/f1/a4/e8/f1a4e813059beb924728009cd6eeea45.jpg) in The White Queen tv show, here's a lovely tutorial (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SzUovGkaprg) by the awesome Ladollyvita!

Actually, my natural texture is much curlier than this, but I use to flat iron my hair once a week, after washing, from scalp to shoulder/apl, and then braid.
I think that waves and curls come out more if you keep it moisturized, i usually damp my length before braiding to have a more defined wave pattern!

I oiled my lengths a little before putting them in bantu knots before bedtime yesterday, and I've never had waves hold so well!!!

Or had such lovely waves in general... Gonna be bantu knots every night from now on.

It's not a super good picture to show the length, but it shows the waves beautifully:

Took a new length shot in the garden last night and my ends are finally inching back past waist! (I trimmed to just above waist a couple months ago to clean up some major split ends--I think I'm getting down to the last few inches of hair that was regularly blow dried, so hopefully that's the last mini-chop I need for damage control!)

Also, I re-purpled the ends after monday's short dye job (this time I did a full 12" this time instead of 6", so you can actually see a good bit of purple!)

Now that I'm not going to maintain at 30-31" (I saw my cousin the other day, who I grew up with almost as close as a sister, and her hair is about the same length as mine, so obviously I've turned it into an unspoken one-sided competition to see whose will get longer) I'm just less than 5 inches away from tailbone and I want to get there ASAP. With my regular growth rate, I should get there within 7 months, so late February probably, but definitely not by the end of the year. I know I should be grateful for the growth rate I have, and I am, but I still wish I could speed my growth up even more. :wigtongue

The tip of my hair is basically 1 inch from BCL, but I still have two thick layers on the sides (from the front) that just reached waist. I'm SO tempted to cut back to waist and have the thickest hemline I ever had in my life, but I also enjoy immensely the fact that my hair is at its longest ever! I chopped/trimmed the thinnest part over the last year so my ends aren't that bad but they still taper a bit. What would you do??

I'd probably go halfway and maintain the length with small monthly trims until the layers were caught up. Leastways, that's what I do when I feel like getting rid of more of my layering, just trim off most of my monthly growth every month until it's closer to where I want it.

Officially calling hip! I'm resisting the urge to trim - I've been stuck in the cycle of growing to hip and cutting back to waist or just above for years. With the last such trim I removed 98% of the lingering highlight damage. I also had layers re-cut to aid in the removal of said highlight damage, and I'm eager to trim them out again. However, I've made a promise to myself that I won't trim above hip, so I'm going to wait a few months. I'm eager for BCL, which is still about 5" away. Darn long torso.

How much further to TBL?

You're really the best judge of how far it is because you know your height and proportions better than a picture can indicate and you can't see bones in a picture unless you get an xray. For hip just find the tops of your hip bones on your sides, you're probably very close if not past it now depending on how much of your hair has to be there for you to call it. Your tailbone is usually about halfway between the top and the bottom of your bum, or an inch or two higher, if you can't/don't want to find it yourself.

It depends on where you consider hip length to be. Some judge by where they feel the top of the hip bones are in the back and others go by where the tip of the hip bones protrude/can be felt in the front. So if I were to call hip the area between those two points (since I can't see your bones, it's more of an estimation) then I'd have to say that you are more or less there already. This discrepancy is why I skipped the "hip" marker and just waited to call JTL(Jean Top Length - where the hair touches the tops of your pants/bottoms) since that's an easy visual for everyone else.

I do a bit of a Time Warp to find hip length--yanno, it's just a jump to the left, then a step to the right, with your hand your on hips, bring your knees in tight... Okay, who's singing now? And who's thrusting the pelvic stuff? :p Browneyedsusan, in the siggy pic I can see a shadowy crease in your shirt just down from your hemline that looks to be around hip level?

I would say perhaps TBL is around where your shirt ends? Also, (this is a bit awkward but) you can also feel your backside and find where your tailbone ends and take a photo of youtself from behind with a timer whilst holding your hand there to see how long you've got to grow till that point exactly.

The pic in my sig is the one I promised back in July. Oops. DH took the pic quick and though I should have had him take it again because looking at it drives me nuts. It is taken from low angle, and hair do not look symmetrical. It was wavier than normal because I french braided with a paranda. I would promise you all a recent picture with my normal waves, but it would probably take me a month to get to it.....

I'm about 3 inches from hip, which is closer than what I thought, so I should be there in about 6 months (which falls on the same month as my 1 year LHC anniversary). :D I think I'm going to maintain once I reach that length. My hemline isn't too thin, but I want to cut off old damage and layers, grow out my natural hair color, and I just really like the length.

The plan is to hang between waist and hip, but who knows where you will all eventually lead me lol ;)

ETA: I will stay at waist.
Even if I nudge my hip...my markers are so close (2" max) it isn't even worth mentioning lol
Being so short waisted ...WL/hip are the same.

So excited to report that my hair now gets completely caught in my pants! Who knew I'd be excited about that? The longest bits are touching my tailbone when wet. My ends are starting to fairytale so they're almost there. I'm in the no trim until 2016 crew so I'm going to ride it out. Think I should be able be solidly tailbone by the end of the year. Then I can trim to let my ends level off and thicken them up for my trip to classic!

Hey Lindseyh!! We are at the same length!! I am also hoping to be solidly at TBL by Jan or Feb pending any 1/2 inch trims. I am growing out layers and I have a 1 inch layer that is thin at the hemline and is driving me nuts. I want to chop it off so badly but then there goes an inch! So I am just going to maintain at TBL for 6? months or so and hopefully thicken up my hemline! Is your goal classic? I am curly3b at 33.5 inches so classic on me will take a bit longer than wavy girls due to curlygirl shrinkage... oh well! It will grow! Happy growing!

PS I know how exciting it gets when our hair gets caught in our pants!! Just today, I noticed my braid tassel brushing up against my jeans waistband when we were out walking our Pookie!

Hi ladies! I have just reached waist length this weekend, and am ready to move to the next level :) I originally had a goal of waist length when I joined LHC in early 2014, but totally fell in love with caring for my hair properly, and just want to see it grown long and healthy in all its splendor, which to me now means somewhere between hip and TBL.

I don't plan on getting there quickly, as I am growing out old highlighting damage (you can't really see it because I recently used a dark blonde Demi to blend it with my natural color) but I am 15 months into growing my virgin hair, and am slowly micro trimming out the old damage. It isn't bad, not visibly obvious or even all that different texture wise, but the ends get a bit dry faster than the rest so I'm trying to rid myself of it slowly while still growing. I can't tell how many inches I have to go until Hip, maybe 3 ish? I'm pretty short waisted. Im guessing that if I hit BCLish by the end of 2016 I'll be pretty happy and will maintain there. Any thoughts or words of wisdom?? I'm just chuffed to be here :)

We share the same story. My first goal was to have waist length hair as well but off course the magic of tLHC changed my mind to BCL... I had (and still have a bit) bleach damage from highlights I needed to grow out. I've been microtrimming as well, it works wonders!

So much beautiful inspiration on this thread!

I'm currently at 34-1/2", which is 1-1/2" away from bcl on me. Since Jan 2014 I've been microtrimming either half or all of my monthly growth, and in that time I feel like I've seen enough progress between gained length and decreased taper to afford a decent-sized trim - so on my last trim I went from bcl at 36" to hip at 34-1/2". I'm not sorry I did - I was craving a blunter, thicker hemline and I got that, and yet the visual length has remained about the same. The ends are behaving so much better now, that alone was worth the sacrifice of 3 months growth!

As soon as I've reached enough posts to put up a pic I will - until then I'm loving seeing the ones you've all been sharing!

I will probably be here longer than I thought. Can't seem to keep away from the scissors. :p I added more layers at the start of the month via a pony on top of the head to see if I could get more curl (nup--it feathered instead) and show more of the white underneath for my ombre-look. But the thinner ends looked see through with all that white, and bugged me a bit, so I took an inch off the hemline the other day (2 months of growth). It's still a little too feathery, but I'll see how I go.

I'm going to stay in the neighborhood of bcl/tailbone, I will not be growing any longer in the forsee-able future.
With my thickness this is about all the hair I care to handle at this point. I was actually really happy at hip-plus, so ... it would not break my heart to go back there someday. For now I feel pretty good where I'm at, though.

Sssso, I made a mistake this week.
I cutted way too much hair and I'm so disappointed.
My hair was at BCL, I suspended my monthly microtrims for the summer and planned to cut 1.5/2 cm at the end of my holidays to get rid of sun/salt damage.
When I came back home I made a good SMT, oil treatments and such, and decided to trim with the usual Feye's ponytail method, which has gone well as always.
But then I messed up: I decided that I couldn't bear my side-grown-out-stringy-bangs anymore, and cutted them in what was supposed to be a U shaped hem. It turned out awfully. One side was significantly shorter than the other and you could really see this fairly big chunk on a side hanging there alone.
I tried to keep it for some days, to see if it would bother me so much, and it did.
So I ended up cutting another 1.5 inches in order to reduce the gap. That freakin' chunk is still shorter than the rest, but less visibly, and the overall length is back to 2-3 cm past hip and I'm so sad about it.
I try to appreciate my super soft ends, but it still hurts.

I didn't even had the courage to take a pic so far. I guess I will someday.

Same here as well. Even worse after reaching hip. Splits were kind of okay, but my ends started to become really thin. Since maintaining for quite a while, my hair has grown almost 1 inch and my ends look waaaay thinner already. Luckily I will reach my goal in some months and I can maintain again :)

The longer the hair gets, the older the ends are and the more damage they've accumulated. For me, it was using thread-covered elastics. I cut them out last year and after some generous trimming and care, my splits have gone from "is every other hair split or something?!" back down to 2-3 a week. The source of damage might be different, but you still might be able to track it down and reduce or eliminate it.

The first time I grew to waist, YES. BSL to waist, I had so many splits and my ends were pretty dry!!

This time, I have only had to trim twice this year, even though I'm at hip.
I think split preventative care- lots of oilings, conditionings, and treatments, from the time I started at chin-length have helped my hair immensely this time around.

I finally called waist about a week ago, so I guess I've officially graduated to this thread. :D My original goal when I started growing my hair out was tailbone, so I'm super excited to be somewhat close to it (obviously waist is still several inches from tailbone but, it's a lot closer than shoulder so I'll take it.). I'm planning a big trim in December to get rid of some of my layers, and then no trim 2016 so I'm hoping to reach tailbone by early 2017.

You all have such gorgeous hair :heartbeat

Please ignore how fluffy, and frazzled, my hair looks in this picture - is it just me, or do bad hair days always seem to coincide with length shot days? :ponder:

Welcome here and oh my, your hemline is so thick :thudpile:
I wish my bad hair days looked like that :)

parkmikii, thank you so much :heartbeat That really means a lot - I've been feeling not so good about my ends/hem lately so that was really nice to hear, thank you! You made my day :flowers:

That's so true, my hemline got pretty thin recently :(
Quirkybookworm there's literally no problem with your hemline, it's really thick and lovely :blossom:

Johannah, Thank you. I guess that just goes to show how much we can get into our own heads sometimes.

parkmikii, I'm sure your hem isn't thin, probably just a case of 'I think my hem is thinner than it is', I've heard that's going around :p  On a serious note, I'm sure your hem isn't thin, and I thank you, again :):heartbeat

I was scrolling through some of the older pages of this thread, and it's giving me such hair envy. :crush: You ladies have such beautiful length!

You're definitely right about that! Thankfully there's this forum to let us realize our hair isn't as 'bad' as we think! :)

I'm finally up to BCL wet! I'm on track to hit BCL dry at the end of the month, but then it'll be time for my next layers-begone micro trim, so I'll have to wait to call it until mid-October. Then it's just 3.5 inches to tailbone, so I should get there next spring if all goes to plan.

Congrats! :D

Now that I'm almost to waist, I've decided to grow my hair to tailbone length. We shall see. Now that my hair has grown longer, been getting quite a few compliments from customers at work, asking me what I do. New experience, and first time my hair has been this long. I love it! :)

Hi people in this thread..:) Im quite far from joining here as Im just grazing BSL but I wanted to ask if there are many fine-ish curlier 2c/3a types around here..if you could say hello and tell me how your journey to tailbone went..any difficulties you encountered and how you overcame them...or anything else about getting to tailbone with fine curlier hair.
Thnx :)
Dolly
