Idun, that image has suddenly made my life easier :D I've always had a bit of a problem knowing where was what xD Thank you!
So, now that I know for sure that I'm already at waist (nearly an inch past when wet and straight), can I join? ^_^

Idun - that's so neat!
Though one thing - another personal preference regarding milestone probably - BSL looks somewhat low like this. When I was growing out from BSL to waist I had quite a way to go, and I figured that that's mid-back length - halfway between BSL and waist. I know some members refer to mid-back as BSL, but it makes little sense to me.

For me I am headding for the top of the vertical smile as my measurement for Tail bone - I see on the last picture it is now called BCL.
I self-trimmed 2 inches off of my hair this morning to remove the ends which were even more damaged when I used semi-perm last month to even out the hair tone. This takes me back to 82cm (32.3 inches) which is still below waist on me.
I am really thinking to stick in this Waist to Tailbone zone until I have cut out the worst of the chemical abuse damage - this means I will be here for a good number of years!

I don´t really think it is clear what they mean in the standard lenghts thread. Allthough I suspect Heidi has the correct answer.

Thanks for the pictures, the pictures of the tip of the tailbone makes sense to me, I have sprained my tailbone and it was from the tip not the top so I am pretty sure of where that is.

I´m still not totally convinced this is the general concensus at LHC on the placing of tailbone. In the pictures from the lenghts guide it looks like one of the girls have tip of tailbone and the other has somewhere above top of crack. So..? I wish more veterans would chime in.
I´m not sure what you mean by inverted smile, but I do have two dimples on my bum. Those are my next milestone. I find them much easier to use as a mark than hip, as hip is measured from the front and doesn´t have a clear point.

"Inverted smile" or "vertical smile" is just a polite way of saying "butt crack." i.e. the line in between your buttocks...:o

Thanks for the diagram, that really helps. I'm hoping to get to BCL with a full hemline someday. That's the longest my hair has ever gotten before I got annoyed with thin fairy tails and cut back. I'm currently about hip, doing regular-ish trims about every 4 months to keep the hemline nice while getting whatever length happens to grow.

So I had finally reached what I think is TBL. which was ausome. And then I went and got a trim. I have to admit the guy did a pretty good job of not chopping too much off but it was still a little more than I wanted. He ended up taking almost two inches off so I am pretty much back to where I started when I joined. Though I have to admit my hemline is nice and even now it just feels so much shorter now. I just hope it grows out quickly over the summer.

I am, as far as I can ascertain with my very curly, unruly hair, somewhere between waist and tailbone, so I'm going to make my home here (maybe for a long time, my hair doesn't seem to want to grow at *all*).
Does anyone else feel this is a sort of in-between length, not yet the awesome fairytale look of classic and past that, and already too long to pass unnoticed around everyday? I get frustrated, sometimes, thinking that while I do have to take precautions and longhair-tricks, my hair is not really *long* (nor does it seem as it will ever be)...

Yes, I feel that it's a sort of in-between length, too. For me that feeling is exaggerated, because I am growing out face-framing layers and a V hemline, so the parts at the front that fall over my shoulders are even shorter.

My hair is at almost 34" now and somewhere between waist and TB. If I would cut back to a blunt hemmline, I would probably have to cut back to waist, but I kinda love my fairy tail ends. And they are very comfortable to hide in a bun. :-)
But the pics and my feeling say its not growing at all, the tape measure disagrees.

I took me almost a year to reach TBL, which was my initial goal but I want it to be TBL when it's in braidwaves too(eats a lot of length) So I guess classic?
I'm contemplating cutting it a little to even out the hem and remove some damage. It's kind of weird, looking at the hairs up close they don't look damaged and no split ends but from afar it kind of looks it. Meh.

I only feel it's in between because it's not short as it used to be anymore, but yet not there yet. I guess it would be it for me when my hair does a touchdown on my behind. I'm super close to it when my hair is not overly curly.

Just wanted to volunteer that I am loving this length...I am somewhere right between hip and upper tailbone at 34.5 inches, and I LOVE having hair this long! I can't wait to see if I like longer lengths as much.
(And yes, in a way this feels "in between" because I am so much longer than I was when I started out here last year, but still quite far away from classic and the truly long lengths...but I'm focusing on enjoying having hair longer than *I* have ever had it, and for me this is really long!)

Both pics clickable.
The shirts are where hip would be. :)
ETA: I think at this point it starts so feel a little bit long to me, but not really long... I assume it's because hip is the longest my hair was when I was a kid. And as a kid I never really felt like I had long hair, even though everyone said it to me. *g*
So: Jep, definitely a in-between length.

I'm a bit late to the party, but I agree with your placement of tailbone. The general LHC consensus, however, seems (at least to me) to be that tailbone is higher up, roughly where your BCL marker is. By the way, I'd put hip a little bit higher, at the very top edge of the bone.

If hip is this high up, the stretch between waist and hip is really short on me. Maybe half of what you see in this picture.

Idun, we are all built differently. Hip is VERY close to waist on me too, I got there so fast I didn't realize it until I was actually almost BCL. Some people do have a while to go between waist and hip lengths. It's like BSL and waist - for some it rather close by, for me it was so long I decided to use the evasive 'midback' marker as halfway between BSL and waist on me.
BTW, that's quite a good picture, and I sure it could help newbies alot, even though the 'model' doesn't stand straight which skews the proportions a little bit. I'd also add 'calf' and 'ankle' lengths.

Not quite sure where to place calf lenght... Now it is sort of on the fattest part of the muscle.

On me, waist and hip are only about 5 cm (2 inches) apart. That's when counting the top of the upper, outer edge of the iliac crest as hip length.

Measured in at 39" a couple days ago... Yay! 2 inches in just over 2 months. Though sadly I'm still 1.5" from BCL... and I'm not sure how far from tailbone length (was a consensus ever reached on what is tailbone length?).
Question for you all... have you been having issues with the ends thinning out as you gain length? Every time I get a few extra inches it starts looking sparse at the ends... I always feel like I should be cutting all the new growth back, but then I'd have to start over again. I suppose it's better to just put it up and ignore it for a few months, and let it grow in peace for a while--when I do that I'm always happier with my new growth (wispy ends or not). I've wondered if I'm nearing terminal length but 39" seems a little short for that (I hope!).

I had hit a growth plateau for a handful of months recently but I know my hair can reach full hip at least...so I was counting on it growing again at some point. I think though that the tips of my hair could use a friendly little trim to remove some of the winter damage. They do seem to thin out a bit once I get to this length, but I'm wondering if they just grow at slightly different speeds. Who knows?

Trimming half of the monthly growth should give you thicker ends and some growth. I did that a few times to even up my ends.

I found out recently from a couple long-time members that BCL *is* considered tailbone length here. So tailbone isn't the physical marker of the actual end of your tailbone, but where your buttcrack starts.

I'm between waist and tailbone. I get my hair trimmed frequently to keep the ends thick. Probably every six weeks or so I'll get 2 inches cut off, but my hair grows fast.
I use shampoo and conditioner only on the lower half of my hair (that would be the bottom 18 inches!)
I also use a serum on the last six inches or so and spread what's left on my hands through the rest of my hair.
I rarely wear my hair up. I figure if I wear it up a lot, I might as well cut it off.
When it gets to the tailbone, I usually get a 6 inch trim to maintain thickness.

Carolyn, I kid you not. I don't know WHY it grows so fast, but I got 2 inches cut off in mid-March, so I'm overdue for a trim, and it's more than 2 inches longer.
Maybe that should encourage me to try cutting it shorter, knowing it will grow back fast, but I'm reluctant to do that.
One of my nieces has the super-hair-growth gene as well.
Odd but true. But if I just let it grow without trimming it, I get weasel ends. You know--thin and shapeless. So I keep trimming the stuff and it keeps growing.

Hi there, I'm currently mostly at waist with really thin fairytale ends that fall to almost hip. I've been at waist *forever*. The last time I had an actual cut was about 3 or 4 years ago and that was only to just above waist. Anyway, that was all pre-LHC. I'm now hoping that with a combination of CO, careful handling, wearing up-dos and taking vitamins I'll be able to finally get past waist! So far (a couple of months in) it's going well. My hair is in much better condition and is definitely longer than it was. I've got my fingers crossed for a summer growth spurt to get me the couple of inches to hip, and then on to classic...
Wish me luck! :)

I have been gone for awhile. I have made it to 35" which is officially the longest my hair has ever been by about 1/4". I need a solid 36 for TBL/BCL. It is almost there when it is wet. I had only 1/4" growth in April. But I am having some health issues and had a surgery and I figure my hair hibernated a bit. Also, my ends started to split from neglect that month, so I did an S&D, which I have never done before. I bought a tiny super sharp pair of scissors. I noticed that basically only the outer layer of my hair splits. I am sure it is from being put up. I am putting it up more now, too, because of the heat, so I am starting with more oil to hopefully save it from further damage.
I am still confident I will reach a solid TBL by years end/my birthday.
I have gained just enough length in the last 3 months that I am having difficulty with some of my normal buns. It just doesn't wrap around the right amount of times and it seems I always have some hair sticking out somewhere. Probably out of practice, too. I wore it down for a long time.
I made a hair album (not online), and wish I could do some of the buns I did back when I first joined LHC. I lost my touch somehow, guess I am trying too hard? Glad I took pics.
Had a scare when my DD got nail polish in my hair. And I had to rescue HER hair from a wad of gum. In all these years of being a mom, that was the FIRST time. Both turned out well!
Sorry so long, I have been away for a long time.

Last week i finally reached tailbone length, enjoyed it for a week and trimmed back to hip+. I will miss those two extra cm, but hopefully in 2 months time i'll have them back looking healthier and thicker. It's been taking such a long time to attain TBL but i can see it happenning slowly. Last time i trimmed from almost TBL to waist because the damage was more significant. I'll try to enjoy my current length until i'm there...

Finally got a friend to take a picture of my weird looking hair. Simultaneously fine and fluffy. Lots of gold and lots of silver and lots of brown make it look lighter in color than it feels to me.

One of the more popular deep treatments around here :):
Snowymoon's Moisture Treatment (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=128)
I also add some oil (avocado or camellia) to mine as well! I do these frequently, as I have thirsty hair too - especially on the last few inches.

I'll give it a try!
Though I'm not sure it's thirst; it may be texture and gray hair mixed with dark blond....
But I'll try anything that's good for my hair. (That photo is fluffy because it is just almost dry; I'd put coconut oil on as a leave-in when it was wet.)

I guess I fit here now.. I just got a cut to fix my very thin ends (I hadn't trimmed in a couple of years).. I'm back at hip (my hair was between tailbone and classic) and it looks so much better. Hopefully I can keep the fuller ends and grow back to at least tailbone...

I am having a hard time reaching the elusive TBL. I have stalled just at hip. That is ok, I am patient, but the slow growing hair means my ends are older, as opposed to if my hair grew faster, the ends would be younger at TBL. making sense?
Ok, so I am beginning to notice a lot of damage to my carefully cared for hair at the ends. I can especially tell, there is about 6 inches of hair at the bottom that dries superfast compared to the rest of my hair (air-dried). This is also the 6" leftover from the last time I dyed my hair several years ago.
Sooo, I think once I reach TBL (if ever!) I plan to maintain there and thicken the hemline, go for healthier hair before I plunge onto my ultimate goal, which is classic. I have no plans to ever go past classic, if I can even handle classic. My hair already gets in my way and can be quite unruly sometimes since I am active. We are building a house and I do a lot of yardwork and I almost always have it in a bun. But when I go out, I let my hair down (literally, not figuratively) and it just seems to go everywhere!
I know this is not unique to me, even when the seatbelt sucks it up in it when I take it off. But I cannot wear my hair in a bun ALL the time.
I am thinking my stall is actually my ends breaking, as the ends are getting increasingly more uneven. I should have been to TBL by now, given my growth rate as measure by roots from perviously colored hair. I get about 3/4" a month, but the breakage is making that more like 1/4". SIGH.
I guess I would like to be able to wear my hair down more and so am rethinking super long lengths in lieu.
Just rambling.
My point being, instead of renting, I think I will buy this thread and move in permanently. LOL.

Can this thread be a condo-complex with multiple owners?
I've often had my hair at tailbone. I've also had it as short as waist. Now it's hip--probably my most common length.
But I just think that for me, I don't want longer than tailbone because I do like keeping the ends trimmed.
And I'm grateful that my regular trims have kept my ends healthy. (For one thing, they take forEVER to dry!) Every time I go in to have my ends trimmed, I ask my hair stylist (who also has hip-to-tailbone length hair) how much looks like it NEEDS trimming? She always says, "Well, all of your ends are strong. No NEED. Just what you WANT." So I get an inch or two every couple of months. The ends stay happy and it still grows.

Be patient. I know it's hard... Maybe try not to think about your slow growth. When you will look in a mirror someday, you will be at TBL. It's like with trying to boil the water for a one cup of tea. When you are in a kitchen all the time and still are looking at a kettle, it takes 20 minutes to boil a one cup of water. And when you want to do something in the meantime, like change your clothes or call someone, which takes 3 minutes, the water starts to boil in... few seconds:D

@ Quahatundightu:
Your hair is gorgeous.
@WaitingSoLong:
Measuring to the beginning of your growing out isn't the best way to determining the growth rate, as the color fades and the line becomes more of a region.
Perhapy this is why you get diffenrent results and your ends are not so unhappy at all.
Just my idea what could cause the problem.

I had a similar thought, but because lack of moisture can make curlies and wavies look like frizzy 1's, I thought it was maybe that. Hmm.

I have just decided my goal is to tailbone ;)
I do get trims so may take a while, usually have about .5 " every 3 mths or so but been really lazy since moving to Australia, I have had 3 trims and been here 16 mths, Whoops!!

You know...I'm am so anxious to be part of this group. I'm currently measuring 31.5 and I STILL have a good half inch for the middle pieces and inch for the rest before I hit waist. I must have a freakishly long torso. :) I always knew my torso was long but I never focused on it. Also, I seem to keep adjusting my goal length...now I think I want tailbone instead of hip. :)

I was just looking in the mirror and I noticed that my hair is passed my rib cage (in a dutch braid, I will check how long it is in the morning). So I only have 7 1/2 to 8 inches away from my tailbone. I haven't been growing it out within the last two year since getting to my waist but since now I can do braids etc I want it longer.
So if I keep up my new hair routine I could reach my tailbone between the new year and my birthday (10th of March). I'm getting my camera back soon so I make sure it is growing.

OK.. I'm currently at waist and, I think, aiming for tailbone as my ultimate goal. I have a feeling I might have to pause at hip for a while to get rid of some damage and let old layers grow out. I've reached a point recently where I feel I have to start braiding to sleep; if I don't, I end up waking up as myself or my OH have it trapped (a situation made no easier by the addition of two cats and an occasional visit from a toddler to the bed!)

I was really confused about where my waist actually is for quite a while, I thought I wasn't at waist yet but turns out I'm already an inch or two past it. I guess TB will be a bit easier to notice.
This was the same for me when I first joined! Before LHC I never thought to take photo's of my back :p :p :p but when I did I realised how much longer my hair was than I'd thought it was, I was quite shocked. There was me thinking I was a BSL (after all the damage I'd inflicted on it) when in actual fact I'd hit waist length before my eyes.
Yeah, I think when you're at TB length, you'll definitely KNOW it. :D
Anywho, I'm planning on growing my hair a bit more before I trim off some of the taperend ends, so I'd still be at waist length after I've cut some of the damage off. Anyone else here growing out damage who are at waist length, who are just babying their ends for the meantime?

I'm also at hip and trimming 1/4 inch each month since December, and plan to at least through the end of 2010 to get rid of layers (they are gone!), taper (still working on that!), and old damaged ends (looking better, but several inches still to go).

I've still got a few inches to get to BCL, but decided a couple of weeks ago to do a little trim to thicken the ends and even up my hemline. I like it much better now, even though I'm basically maintaining at this point. I decided I was more comfortable maintaining until I'm happy with the ends than just going for more length and having bad ends. To each their own!

Spindance, I agree...I'm doing regular trimming to get the hemline I want, and I'm much happier with it lately! Enjoy!
Also, just chiming in here to mention that I am happier now that my hair is at hip length than I've ever been with my hair. I love being able to do updos that *stay* (and that never happened without this much length). Even if I go longer and decide it isn't for me, I know I can come back to this length and love it! :)

Another member for the club! I am an inch or so below waist length, and my hemline is nice and full, so I suspect my hair has the capacity for classic, at least. I found LHC a couple of months ago and has sort of been lurking around picking up tips and tricks before joining last month.
I have sort of been of the "benign neglect" school of haircare. I haven't fussed all that much over it except for basic hairwashing (and being careful about conditioning, but then my hair is impossible without conditioner)
I wanted to keep my hair long, but also don't like having my hair hanging around and getting in the way, so about 4 years ago I figured out a way of putting my hair up that was fairly bombproof with braiding _and_ taping - no way my hair was going to go down until I took it down myself! I think it was about APL - and with bangs growing out - when I started with that 'do, and now ... :D
These days I am rather addicted to hairsticks and forks, and have no layers or bangs growing out, and am able to make a creditable bun in about 20 seconds :cheese:

I just hit BCL! All 40.5 inches of hair that it took to get there... However, since the length changes drastically from wet to dry and stretched to curly, I think I'm going to let it go a month or two more before "officially" claiming tailbone-length hair.
A little less than 2 months ago on this thread, I mentioned an issue with the ends thinning out (thanks all of you who answered!), and wanted to update: while my ends are still thinner than I'd prefer (might be time to start microtrimming as I keep growing?), they seem to have evened out. I think I won't need to chop off any length for a while, though there is some chemical dye damage, probably even some bleached hair (gasp!) in the last couple inches of my hair that I should get rid of.

I've passed my waist area and I think I'm solidly in hip range these days. I haven't done any changes to my routine but I do wear it up most of the time.
I love your hair!!! What do you use for color or is that your natural color?

Welcome to LHC!! :)

I'm joining in here, not because I've just reached waist, but because I just found this thread. :D
I'm at about hip right now, I think. You can see my sig picture and my album. I started at just-shy of waist, so I'm growing. I seem to tend to stall in the summer months, but we'll see. I'm also still trying to work out my perfect routine. I switched to all-free poo and condish (no cones, no parabens, no SLS) using Hugo's Naturals, but my hair tangles SO badly, and still seems kind of dried out... I'm thinking about trying CO.
Does anyone else have thick, straight hair? I tend to get a bit of greasy scalp, no matter what I do, so I'm hesitant to CO only. We'll see...

Well, my generally hip-length hair is now just about 1/2 inch short of tailbone.
And I'm starting to get the itch to trim it back to hip length.
It'll be my first trim since I've been at LHC. (I've been here under 2 months! You'd never know that from the number of posts I've made!)
Hmmmmm. To trim or not to trim.
Hmmmm. I'm definitely leaning towards the trim. Just back up to hip length. When it gets to tailbone length, I just start fantasizing about a BIG CHOP.

why do you want to trim? Is it a reflex concerning the length, or do you want a thicker hemmie, or are you still growing out damage, or...? Sometimes clarifying the reason for a trim helps me to make the decision. :)

Still trapped, I need to figure out the trimming pattern I need for optimum hair growth. I know my hair can get longer, maybe I should just let it go as long as I can...
Anyway, I'm still at hip, even a year after my last signature photo (I guess I need to put up a new one) but my hair is always getting into better condition, so I am pleased with that.

My hemline is thick and I don't have damage. I just find hip length more convenient and I can wear it down more at that length.

Well, I'll joing this thread because I just noticed that my haid is actually below my waist line. I didn't even notice! :joy: I first cut it up to around my chin in January 2008, and again got it trimmed into layers... Sometime last year? Long layers. Oh, yes. It was in October. I can't remember what length is was then, I wasn't paying much attention. I didn't even notice it was waist length until I looked at it more closely the other day. :eyebrows:
I'm excited to get to tailbone! I think probably another year and it will be there. I think it needs 5 more inches! :disco: (I love these smilies!)

My tailbone (the actual anatomical tailbone) is right where my butt crack starts. When I was thinner, the tailbone came BEFORE the butt crack.

Well, I've made an appointment for Thursday to get my hair trimmed.:cheese::cheese::cheese:
I'll get it trimmed back to hip length, which is just more manageable for me. I've had it to tailbone and past tailbone many times, but hip length is just more workable in my view.

Hello all
My name is Sarah i found this forum a few weeks ago and have become addicted to reading the threads :)
Anyway a little about me and my hair, my hair is currently waist length (maybe a little past?) i'm hopeless at knowing where it falls to on my back, i got my son to take a picture for me and was shocked it kind of looks long but i don't feel it is yet, my aim at the moment is to grow to tail bone length and see how i feel from there, the longest i have ever had my hair is waist length which i cut back to shoulder length in 2004 as it was quite damaged from years and years of getting highlights :(
Hopefully i'll have lovely long hair sometime in the not too distant future though :D sorry bit of a long post just wanted to introduce myself

My hemline is always funky too. I don't get it, I trim regularly! Drives me nuts. And short of cutting three inches off (NOT happening anytime soon!) I can't think of any way to fix it. At least not a quick fix :D Maybe it IS the curls/waves making it look messy and I'm just picky.

Thank you for the compliment, MsBubbles and italianmama.
italianmama, I have always been envious of a good head of curls. My own hair is stubbornly straight. I have tried perms, yes but the results were not good.:(
Msbubbles. if only you knew how mean I was to my hair when I was younger, I wanted curls, and I wanted a color like yours - i actually had it when I was a child, but it darkened when I grew older. And my hair just curls up and dies if I so much as wave a bottle of bleach at it...:rip:
My real hair color is actually the original boring dishwasher color - sort of dark blonde or light brown.
I cheat when it comes to the shine. :D I am a confirmed hennahead, and in addition to the color, which I love, my hair gets nice and shiny, and it does not tangle as badly.

When wet and pulled straight, my hair goes just a bit beyond tailbone!
Of course, I'm being visited by the split end fairy, and all the S&Ds in the world don't seem to be helping (or conditioning treatments, for that matter) I'm less than thrilled with my hairs condition, so I may be in for a trim.

Does anyone have any tips for really babying ends nearing tailbone. I realize now that the ends are quite old they are more likely to be brittle, but my ends feel crunchy and icky, and I'm not quite ready for a trim. S&Ds don't seem to help, or deep oiling treatments. I'm getting frustrated as I near tailbone...

Hey, everyone!
I posted a few days ago that I thought I might have reached tailbone... well, I did some photos (for the sake of hairtyping) a couple days ago and they do clearly show my length:
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_K_10etXq5-0/TD6sZTmxO0I/AAAAAAAAA2A/4y6qaYHWgFU/s512/IMG_3775.jpg
My shirt ends at mid-bum and the towel at the base of the picture is about an inch or two above classic on me, for reference.
By the way, in the discussion about this earlier, someone told me that LHC members had historically measured tailbone length exactly at BCL, the top of the butt. So if you're there, you're already at tailbone. There were several pages of debate about this but I believe that was the eventual resolution of the issue! (Which makes the goal a little easier for some of us!)
Another picture from the back:
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_K_10etXq5-0/TD6sZ1lMsVI/AAAAAAAAA2E/2vAHA7nvzms/s512/IMG_3772.jpg
Here you can see the fairytale ends I'm rockin' and the U-shape... Length-wise, from the bottom center of the picture, tailbone length (as defined above) on me is around the third row of bees on my tank top.
I'd like to have blunt ends eventually but I think I'm going to keep growing for the moment--I think that the wurly texture suits fairytale ends and it definitely makes it easier to put 'em up in updos. (But boy, do they drink up the coconut oil!)
A note about my hair in the pictures: it's a little rougher/frizzier than normal because I did a clarifying wash and airdry (this was for hairtyping, remember?). I usually moisturize better and have more glossiness and less frizz that way!
So,do you think it's time for me to graduate to "tailbone to classic"? With the shape I've got and the wispy ends, I'm wondering if I should wait to claim it until I'm there more obviously...

kjirtiben - I would call yours to be at the bottom half of hip, just going to TBL. You might wait a little longer before officially calling it TBL.

myotis, I am with you. Same place. I am almost at 36", just shy of TBL and my ends are splitting. I NEVER used to get split ends. In fact, every time I finally go in for a trim, the hair people are always amazed at the condition of my ends. However, I have never had hair this long. I know I am not at term, but I can see my hair growth at the roots does not match the tape measure, so I am losing about 1/4- 1/2" per month to breakage. I was getting 3/4" a month growth, now I am getting only about 1/4".
My hair seems stalled because of this, so I have not been on the boards much lately. No new pics to post, no news. I already have a hair routine in place. I think my weakness is that I wear my hair down a lot. I just think I look ugly with my hair up. For me, I don't see the point in having long hair if you wear it up all the time. JMPO.
So I have modified my long term hair goals. I was heading to classic, but honestly, I am not sure I could stand it. My hair seems to get caught on so much NOW. We went to King's Island and I was laying on a bench to rest and I guess my hair was laying on the ground and I did not know it. My husband told me it was, so I pulled it off the ground. Well, I guess there was a bug of some kind on it, when I tucked my hair in my shirt for a ride it bit me several times on my back!
ANYway, I plan to get just past TBL and maintain there for awhile until I figure out how to improve my ends at TBL.
BTW, another thread here said TBL and BCL are the same. And they are, on me. I am there wet, but about 1/2" shy dry. My original goal was TBL by my birthday (December). I actually have to be past before I am satisfied I have reached my goal. Hip and TBL are only about 1" different for me, especially since I have lost about 20 pounds. Consequently, my waist line lowered as well.
I already microtrim when I have time. A lot of my splits are around my face, the temple hair and behind the ears. I think that hair gets the most stressed by being worn up. I do DCT about every 10 days and oil it often, esp. the ends. I use vinegar rinses a couple times a month which really help make my hair soft and shiny but does not help my ends. I take supplements. My growth rate is really pretty good, but counteracted by breakage.
I guess if I am unwilling to wear my hair up more I will probably maintain just past TBL for quite awhile.

Glad to know someone is in the same boat as me. I agree with you that I have to be a little bit past the goal marker (like waist) before I am satisfied I hit it. I almost always have my hair up, but it seems like my ends have all just decided to split like crazy, even a few inches up. I have oil on the bottom half of my hair at all times, I deep condition, I use poo bars on my scalp and top half of the length only... Don't know quite how to stop this, I may just have to slow down my progress with more frequent trims

WaitingSoLong and myotislucifugus, I came across a thread discussion that might interest you as far as end care. It sure got my attention, my ends are so dry! (And I like to wear my hair down too... I agree, that's kind of the "point" of having long hair!)
Anyway, some ladies are making/using a product called a "tail bag" that was invented to keep show horses tails from damage. It also looks pretty cool- it's basically three fabric tubes and you pull your hair through the tubes in sections and braid the fabric. Since you tie off the "braid" on the fabric and not on your ends, I can imagine that would give them a chance to rest and soak up some oil/treatment (especially at night).
Here's the thread:
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=38063&highlight=tail+bag
And here's some pics/instructions of the tail bag that I found on said thread:

I'm sure they'd be fairly easy to make out of tights, socks, pantyhose ect. I'm thinking of cannibalizing a pair of my black tights to make one, just to see if it works! I'm thinking black would blend in a lot more, and I could just bun the whole thing and see if anyone notices :D

Huh. Brilliant. Maybe even a great use for hose/tights with runs in them. I may have to make me one...

WOW Medievalmaniac, I have never been bowed to before! LOL. It sure looks better in my avatar than in person. I blow-fry my hair for my hair pics, which is why I only have a couple! I was thinking I need a new pic. Maybe for my 35th birthday.
Italianamama, you rock! I LOARVE (<--that's love!) when people put links in posts so I don't have to search! I saved the thread and will read it later but I have all kinds of hose I can use. You can buy 3 pair of cheap knee-high's at Wal-Mart for $1.00. I am SO THERE and plan to try this. However, I would not wear my hair like that out of the house, but what a great protective covering for night and around the house. I am envisioning actually doing buns like this. Ok, pull all hair through one tube and twist into a nautilus and use a stick to secure. It may not work, but as we are painting our whole house right now I think it would help. I am wearing a do-rag to keep the paint out of my hair but I would love a ball cap with a bun out the back covered in hose. Just rambling here...
Wondering if the friction from the hose would pull at hairs? I do sleep on a satin pillowcase (actually took it with me when I went on vacation!) Hey, you could even mist the hose to keep it moist. Right now we are in a very hot streak of weather and even though it is VERY humid I think it is sucking the moisture from my hair and skin.
myotis, your sig says that trim was worth it...how much and when and why was it worth it? Did you actually get a faster growth rate because the splits were trimmed off?

I took off two inches somewhere around the end of March, ending my "no trim for a year" goal. My ends were crunchy and thin, and the trim just helped blunt the ends a bit, making the overall hair condition better. Didn't get a faster rate, but my hair felt much better. I'd been going back and forth for a while on the subject, and I'm glad I did. In fact, I think I'm up for another trim, and I think that will help with my current feelings about my hair.

Thanks!!! Totally feeling the LOARVE!!!! :D
The actual horse tail bags are made of Lycra (like the swimsuit material). It might be possible to line the inside of the braid cover with a fabric that has some slip; and have the outside fabric one with some stick so that the braid or bun doesn't come undone.
I don't sew... so if there's any technical term for slippery and sticky fabrics, I totally missed the boat!

Italiana...that is way too crafty for me. Now, cutting up hose I can do. S E W ??? Ok, I can mend a hem or something but...nah. LOL
I wondered what lycra was. Hmm. How to get some lycra. I think....Goodwill, used bathing suit? Someone needs to start making and selling these things! I love the idea of possibly having a braid that doesn't get frizzy after awhile.
Always looking for something to encourage myself to grow longer than my goal. Right now I cannot possibly see myself past classic, but then, I am not there yet.

ugh so I trimmed a quarter inch or so off my hair like I said I needed to. Which I guess was good. I should probably have taken more, in all honesty. I won't go back to the other thread! I'm waist to tailbone not BSL to waist! I swear! *grips thread with both hands*
Anyway it feels better for the trim, but I'm sad that it looks like I'm going to have to trim a lot on this part of my journey. I changed my stat to just 'waist' so I didn't have to measure my new length :p I think I'm gonna put off any new measurements for a few months. Maybe even till 2011 if I can bear it.

Hey you are brave. This is the very reason I can't bring myself to trim until September. I do not want to be below 30" again because I waited so long to get here haha. I really could use a trim because my hemline is between a U/V and a bit uneven but eh.. updos!

I really really wanted to wait until September. But last week I wore it in a down/half-up thing to go out with DBF, and I realised that I could feel the ends were rougher than the rest. I'd clarified just a couple of days before, too. So it had to go. If it were just uneven-ness I probably would have left it, so I totally approve of your decision! :D

It isn't horrific, but it looks sloppy and greasy at the bottom, because my hair likes to do the snake thing and wrap around itself. At this length, the hair is clumpy all the time. So buh bye, and hopefully it will look even better when I get here again.

Ok, question about the tailbags. I would really like to get one but am not sure about how it attaches. I tried the hose but could not figure out how to attach that either. There was nothing to keep the hose at the top of my tail while braiding. I did not want to use an elastic as I cannot sleep with an elastic in. SO, I am wondering if I could even sleep with this thing either, since you tie it at the top, which would feel bulky like an elastic. Anyone actually USE one of these?
I took some more hair pics so I am about to update my avatar. I always wear the same pants. I think the only real change I can see is that I have lost some weight, but maybe only I can see that. My hair is a LITTLE longer, but really, not much, pooh. Still, very close to TBL.

Hello everyone! I'm a newbie here, and I would be most grateful for your opinions on which length category my hair belongs in! Initially, I thought it was hip length, but upon further review of the sample photos, I think I'm actually past that point.
Now, however, I'm having difficulty figuring out whether I'm at tailbone length, or in between hip and tailbone. I'll attribute my confusion to the fact that I'm not entirely sure what, or where my tailbone is . . . :uhh:

To be honest, it looks even longer than between hip and tailbone to me ... obviously hard to tell since you're fully clothed (wow, can I say that without sounding creepy?) but since it looks to be halfway down your bottom, I'd say at least tailbone, maybe between tailbone and classic.
Traditionally, tailbone on LHC has been a euphemism for "bum crack length" since it sounds better, although I've noticed some people use it to mean a bit further down than that.

So, you will have to inspect yourself in the nude (no pics please lol) and see. I can feel my TB. It is the bottom most knob about where your crack would be. You can see my avatar, I have about 2" to go before I am TBL/BCL. I am about halfway between hip and TBL.

I like this cute diagram, but it isn't really accurate for some of the LHC placement of lengths. Waist length is a bit higher than the drawing shows, as are hip and tailbone. Hip length (as I understand it), is where your hip bones jut out at the front, and tailbone is at the top of the butt crack. Maybe I'm being nitpicky, but even these slight variations can mean the difference of an inch or two for some people. ;)

is the 'waist to tailbone' stretch a lot longer than other mini-journeys for anyone else here? For me, APL-BSL is about 4 inches, and BSL-Waist is about 3 inches, but it looks like Waist-tailbone is going to be at least (a whopping!) 7 inches, maybe more. sadface! :( That's kind of depressing me since BSL to waist seemed to take forever but is objectively a shorter journey on my body! So this is going to take aaaages in comparison, even not taking into account that I want to trim more in this part!

This is how I feel. I am actually good with my current length. I would love to be classic someday but health of my hair is more important to me than length.
For the one who asked, I have been past waist for years now. I maintained right around waist before I even knew what waist length was (I considered hip as waist before LHC). In fact, when I joined I said I always wanted to have waist length hair and someone replied and said I was already past it and referred me to the LHC file that shows people with the diff. hair lengths. I had 4" cut last August, and an inch here and there since I have been waist. I had another 4" cut a few years back and I think I was past waist then, too.
I plan to get to TBL and trim to maintain for awhile, so I will not be leaving this thread anytime soon. I should be at TBL in a few more months then plan to have my first maintenance trim around New Years.
I am dedicated to measuring monthly for a year but after 9 months of measuring I cannot wait to QUIT. I can never really get a consistent measurement anyway. I usually measure 3 times then take the average. I am measuring the last time at the end of December and since I am going to maintain TBL there will be no point measuring anyway. Plus, I already know my growth rate is much faster than my measured rate. I believe I actually do about 1" a month according to roots, which I can do now that I use sun-in (don't berate me!)
BSL to waist is about 4" for me (waist = 30ish")
waist to hip between 5 and 6" (Hip=35ish")
hip to TBL almost 4" (TBL=38")
TBL to classic between 6 and 7" (Classic, est. about 44-45")
It is weird how diff. everyone is. I have seen people who are TBL at 34", and people just reaching waist at the same length!

About six months ago I told myself that I wouldn't continue growing my hair until I was happy with the ends. I didn't want to have long hair with stringy ends.
I have been trimming my hair by myself, but today I went to the salon and got an actual, professional hair trim by my stylist whom I haven't seen in over a year! She took off about two inches, and I'm happy with the results. One side of my hair was longer than the other side, and she evened out everything that I was unable to do myself. My hair ended up still below my waist, which is good.
I think I'm ready to move onto hip/tailbone now! I hope I can keep my ends happy.

I think I belong in this thread now. :D I took a picture and my dh confirmed it in person - I have officially reached waist at 28 inches.:cheese: My next goal is hip at 30.5 inches with tailbone at 34 inches after that. I also officially feel that I have strange bodily proportions, but what can I do about that? ;)
Do sit down - but mind your hair ;) - and enjoy yourself! :flower:

I think I'm ready to join this thread :D I'm 1/2"-1" past waist at the moment, aiming for either hip or TB...not sure how long I'll go yet. My original goal way back in 2007 was waist, but of course we all know how goals change!! I'll probably end up getting an inch and a half trimmed late this month, since my fiance is coming home from Iraq and I want my hair to be deliciously soft and pet-able for him lol! Plus, the wedding is in October, and even though I'll be wearing it up for the day, there are lots of pre-wedding activities where I want my hair to look healthy and thick. I've always been a health over length girl anyway. But, after the trim this month, I'm planning on leaving it alone until I reach hip, then see how I feel about it.

I just realised today that my longest strand is around tailbone, but I want the rest to join up there and it just won't grow fast. I've been stuck in between waist and tailbone for about.. 6 years, on this length the ends tend to die really fast and I'll have to cut them for my hair to look nice again.
I'm currently resisting trimming the ends for another 1-3 years to see if I can get it on a full hip length. Goodluck to everyone else in between these lengths, I've noticed for years how hard it is to get past this stage.

welcome to the thread and congratulations on your upcoming wedding!

aw wow, that's a bit discouraging  I hope LHC hair can decrease my breakage so I don't have to trim too much, but I'm pretty sure I'm going to be trimming much more in this stage of the journey than in previous stages ... I'm hoping I can get away with trims every two or three months, and that I will win The War On Splits that way.

I'm thinking about a trim....and then I'm not....and then I am....and then I'm not! Ack. I hate that I'm so close, yet so far away, from my goal... :( For me, it's somehow a OT harder to get the strength to trim between hip and tailbone than it was at any other point in the journey to date!!

So true! My ends are a bit scraggly, but I keep telling myself when it all gets to tailbone I'll trim, but I really should trim now.
I think I've been posting for a few weeks on how I've sorta hit tailbone, but I'm gonna cut about two inches off, and yet there have been no cuts. Although, I suspect it is because I can't find my hair trimming scissors. When I moved, I'm not sure what box they went in to. I may need to get new ones. However, I'm going to need to buy/find them soon, because I'm beginning to lose the War On Splits, and this is not good.

I'm still a bit confused as to when one hit TB, I seem to hear different opinions on this. But I've hit BCL, but not yet at the tip of the TB. I think I lean towards the tip of it being true TB, so I'm here for a bit longer. But of course, now I'm starting to feel the urge to trim. :S I love going to hairdressers to be pampered with, but they always cut too much, and then I'm suddenly very far from my revised goal of classic length. :P

*grumble, grumble*
I've come to the conclusion that I've hit The Mother of All Stalls and that I am never going to have hair any longer than I do now. It's BCL when wet, but it loses a good 4-5 inches when dry and curly and... gah, it doesn't seem to be growing at all! :justy:
I tried Monistat (well, a sort-of-kind-of equivalent I found here), but it was a pain to apply and it wasn't really giving me visible results... now I'm taking biotin, but I don't want to get my hopes up...
It's not that I'm eager to leave this thread and all of you, lovely people, but I am getting a bit frustrated with my hair's growth-rate... :disgust:

Well, I'm 39" and I reached 'can I call this TBL?' length when my hair is pulled straight. But I won't be graduating from this thread anytime soon, since my hair is barely hip length when curly. My goal is TBL-ish curly, so graduating from this thread completely will mean meeting an actual and very big goal for me, and I just can't wait! :D

I feel like I've been in this thread forever. But, I am making a pact with myself right now, I'm not going to trim my hair until October, and by then I (hopefully) will be an inch or two from tailbone. My sig pic is from July 2009 and I've had two trims of about 2 inches since then. My last trim was in April.
