I have been missing from the forum for a while -- I have just been really busy with work. The good thing is that while I was busy my hair grew ... it is now hip and edging down towards tailbone. I had it micro-trimmed today by my amazing hairstylist and am attaching a picture:

I have found this to be true for me as well. Once I reached hip I don't worry about length or growth rate as much as I did just a few months ago! I even cut an inch off (gasp!) without really minding. I know I've still got several inches to go before I reach my goal, but I have more patience now that it actually *feels* long, as opposed to the impatient feelings that go with trying to get past BSL and through the mid-back abyss.
I agree. For me the impatient feelings were really bad at mid-back abyss. Your hair is gorgeous in your signature.

Also, I'm claiming TBL now that i gave it 2 extra weeks and reached my magic number of 39" :knit: i definately agree once you reach hip you get really patient for a while, and now i'm TBL its another calming 'i'm there' moment. :) hopefully it'll hold me over until classic :D

How do you curl it? I'm assuming a heat-free method. Currently I do homemade pillow curlers: sponge curlers inside of knee-high stockings which I just roll up and tie. I'm going to try to put them in the steamer today to see if I can do a kind of jerry-rigged Caruso method. But I am missing my longer hair sometimes.

We've been having gorgeous weather here lately so I dragged the boyfriend outside to take some length shots for me. :p
Yeah, so, it turns out I'm at solid BCL after all. Nearly to tailbone. I'll consider myself TBL when my hair touches the seat of a chair when I'm sitting.

Your hair and mine looks so similar! Very pretty, if I don't say so myself.
I've been so busy with school lately, so I haven't been around on the forum much. Nothing new to report here. Waiting for hair to grow is worse than waiting for grass to grow, lol.
I am still hoping for BCL by the end of the year.

Some old cheap foam rollers from 20 years ago. haha But usually just tons of tiny buns for tight waves. I've lost my iron, which is probably a good thing cuz then i have to straighten it first and its a nightmare.

I feel like I've been on this thread (and at waist length) for forever. Its now officially been TWO YEARS since a hairdresser cut in my layers of doom (without permission). I've been trimming them out ever since.
Today I realized that my hair is actually getting heavy -- my bun actually feels super-heavy when i'm running. I guess its finally thickening up! Anyway, I'm hoping that I can actually start to grow some length after my next trim, even if I have to keep doing more microtrims than most of us.

Crumpet, layers of doom *snort*! I know exactly what you mean, though. I had layered, collarbone length hair and it took about 2 years to grow out. Aggressive layering looks nice for about 2 weeks, but is a pain to grow out. I think it took trimming off about 5 or more inches to get it all one length again. 5 inches! I could totally be at my goal length if not for those blasted layers! Well, at least mine were my choice, not a surprise attack from someone's scissors.

May 2nd, 2015, 06:33 AM
FuzzyBlackWaves Curls and waves make 'better' terminal textures in my opinion. They stick together and have that one longest curl that's really adorable. While the curtain-straight hairs might seem 'better' in the mid-back area, when it thins out it is very see through and 'unhealthy' much earlier because of the flowy nature of them.
It depends on your hair as to why its breaking, but I'd suggest looking through the terminal thread to see how they care for the super long. Some stick with their routines, while others have had to relearn everything [brushing washing updos] because the way it acts and damage sources change.
Thanks for the feedback and advice :blossom: I've decided to grow to my current goal (bottom of the hips) which should take about a year. Then I'm going to start trimming off the entirety of the new growth every month until my hair is all one length and the damaged ends have been cut out completely. From there I could either progress on to terminal with better quality or stick with hip length - I guess I'll know once I get there :)
Everyone's photos have been so beautiful! Some truly stunning hair on this forum. I love your hemline and colour minaa - and you're so close to hip!

Today I am going to try a jerry-rigged Caruso set. That means sponge curlers in the veggie steamer, rolled up and fastened with claw clips. If it works I will not have to spend upward of $40!

So I'm BCL now. My ends are staring to look a little thin though. Maybe I will just hold out until TBL and see... I can always trim back. I really like hip length, but I don't know about this length I am at. Not sure if it looks good on me.

Decided I'm going to return to this thread... (it's more active and there are lots of gorgeous heads of hair ^_^)
No - I haven't trimmed or cut my hair, and yes, stretched out my hair does reach tailbone - however, I hadn't quite noticed how "short" it looked normally...
I asked my boyfriend to take a photo to see how much the red had faded, and I hadn't quite realised how much length I lose - somehow I hadn't thought my waves to eat up so much, yet in these photos it looks waist-hip!
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a134/magikspiffy/IMG_20150505_222505.jpg (http://s10.photobucket.com/user/magikspiffy/media/IMG_20150505_222505.jpg.html)
just for comparison to nearly 2 months ago to when I first dyed it:
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a134/magikspiffy/0433e675-c863-4d54-8062-bbbd6787f025.jpg (http://s10.photobucket.com/user/magikspiffy/media/0433e675-c863-4d54-8062-bbbd6787f025.jpg.html)
definitely faded, but nowhere near as much as I expected! I was thinking of redying soon, but I might hold off a little while. :)
ETA: it's weird, because I'd consider my waves to be 2a - and definitely not more than "2b" when freshly washed (definitely not the case in this photo :p), so I'm wondering where all the length goes. I have just checked again, and it does still reach tailbone, but I'm thinking this might be more an artifact of my back (it is very arched towards the bottom, so depending on how I bend my back maybe it is still more BCL length - but in my normal posture my back is really arched...).
Anyway, I'm probably overthinking this trivial matter, but in any case, I think I'll hang around here till it looks solidly TBL however I look at it. :p I guess I'm not ready to fly this nest yet

It's great to have you back, DreamSheep! :) In the first picture, your hair definitely looks a lot wavier than a 1c/2a! I was honestly surprised myself because I remember your hair to be a little less wavy. Are that bunwaves by any chance?
It also seems like your sides are catching up to the bottom of your U hemline a little! It looks really nice. :)
I personally don't dare to post a pic at this time because my last 'trim' threw me back to 69cm from 73cm and while it still looks like waist, I know that I'll need to wait until mid-may so I can rightfully claim it again. ^^° Still, I'm not leaving over something like that haha I hope you don't mind.

I was wondering, DreamSheep, if perhaps some of your layers eat up the length? Your layers (they are so beautifully done! I wish I could wear layers like that) mean most of the bulk of your hair is higher up, which tricks the eye into thinking it's a bit shorter. The longest bits definitely look like a gentle pull would bring them to TBL.
I definitely wouldn't leave over a couple of centimeters either, missblueeyes. No one will notice
A while back I said I'd soon claim BCL - still hasn't happened. The longest bits have been *almost-there-but-not-quite* for ages. I haven't had much growth, which I'm blaming on a massive split-end issue last month and lots of S&D. I haven't found many this month, so I'm hoping I can call it by the end of May.

May 6th, 2015, 05:32 AM
Thanks missblueyes and Katlette - you are both so sweet! :)
You might be right - those are definitely temporary bun waves (I whipped out my hairstick a couple of seconds before and didn't get a chance to readjust the hair or anything).
I'd say my hair is definitely still a V-hemline when brushed out (but you know then I see photos and get surprised!), but I have noticed that my undermost layer, which is also the longest, is the waviest (maybe 2b/2c after washing!!), so maybe that is why it seems to shrink more.
That said, I have also had split-fest galore (as a result of sport most likely), so I probably keep cutting ends off the longer layer and maybe it is slowly sculpting a V-hemline.
Anyways, I will hang round here until more layers catch up and I feel more solidly TBL :p

It is vegetable dye - here specifically, Pillarbox Red by Directions. I fancied experimenting with different shades of red before returning to my natural haircolour or going down a more permanent route :)

Since I mentioned a trim earlier, I thought I'd give you a little update on how my hair looks. :)
Here's the before picture, taken in the middle of April.
http://i59.tinypic.com/2vluxz8.jpg
Now, I know that my hair is in braidwaves on this picture so it seems a little shorter than it was. This were 73cm, a little past waist but not really close to hip because my deep V made my hair seem much shorter than it was. This picture was also what motivated me to trim because I'd rather have a straight hemline now.
Here comes the after picture. Sorry for the bad quality, this was all I could manage at the moment.
http://i59.tinypic.com/21ai89t.jpg
On Saturday, it has been three weeks since my trim to 69cm, which is 1 cm above waist for me. I measured today and got 69,7cm so I'm getting really close to being back at waist. :)
The best thing about it is that my hair actually feels long this time around. My hem isn't fully straight yet (you can still see the remnants of my V draped over my shoulders) but it's definitely an improvement to what I previously had. In hindsight, maybe I should have brushed my hair properly for this shot. The sides are almost invisible, haha!

Ooh ooh can I join?? I'm growing to tailbone, probably maintaining there for a while to get rid of some not-so-healthy ends, then going on to classic. I was waist at my last trim, now down to about hip so not too long to go hopefully!
This may be a stupid question, but for curly hair how do people normally measure/check body markers? I'm just above hip when curly, at hip when I have braid waves - how I normally wear my hair when down, and below hip (pretty much tbl) when stretched. My curl shape changes every time I wash my hair though, so I don't think I'd get an accurate result that way. How do curlies normally measure hair length?

Tailbone is the last bony lump down in your butt crack. If you can't find it or don't want to go searching, it's usually close to halfway between the top of the butt crack and classic length at the bottom of the butt, so just measure halfway and call that close enough.

I'm just a wurly, but I measure visually by where my hair sits the day after wash day, because I always let my hair air dry loose then bun it overnight, so it always gets treated the same way and has (give or take) the same wave pattern to it. The important thing is consistency.

I brush my hair out with EVOO and let it dry in a lwb since when I leave it curly, and when I detangle in the shower with conditioner the next day, I shed alot more due to increased tangling... anyways, I always brush my hair out and stretch it to measure--Always. The curly 3b length is too inconsistent and it would be too disappointing otherwise if I left it curly to measure. And, the true length is the actual length of the strand, and the curl hides the length, so imo that is not a fair, consistent measurement. But, of course, everyone has to do what is right for themselves. :blossom: ;) I loose about 5 inches when my hair is curly! :( Please feel free to check out my LHC albums to see pics of what I am talking about. ;)

Nope! The top of the butt crack is butt crack length, its own special milestone. Tailbone is the last bony ridge in your butt crack, or halfway between buttcrack and classic length if you can't find the actual tailbone.

I think my growth rate has accelerated a little. Can't imagine why? I did start exercising 3X weekly last summer, and eating more protein. --You'd think I would have noticed before now?-- I'll have to pay closer attention and see if it continues. (I deliberately don't measure my hair or scrutinize my body. I could get obsessive about it pretty easily, so don't go there.) I have been feeling the need to touch up my roots really often though? hmm:confused:

May 13th, 2015, 02:12 PM
Here is a chart that's circulated around here before I think: http://thehairfiles.files.wordpress.com/2011/07/hairfileshairchart-7.jpg
The exact inches/cms will be different for everyone, so it's impossible to say. You can get an idea of measurements by holding a measuring tape to the front of your hairline and seeing how far it is to your goal. Similarly, growth rate differ quite a bit. Six inches a year tends to be average.
For reference, waist on me is 30 inches, classic 42.
ETA: I just realised tailbone is perhaps a bit high on that chart. The rule about it being approximately between BCL and Classic is better.

(Is it the coccyx? Like, I'm sorry for being graphic, but is it where the " actual butt" starts? I think that's it, but I'm not sure, even witj the charts.. ). I can't even tell if I'm at hip or not. I'm past waist, but even with my large hip/small waist body type, i cam't tell for sure if I'm at hip.. I guess I'll wait for buttcrack instead, it's much easier tl tell where it is! So.. 8 months away?

I went way too long between trims and just cut an inch off, so I'm a couple months away from BCL but will be solid TBL by the end of this year.

Hip length should be easy to find if you place your hands behind your body around waist length and move down till you feel your hip bones. As for difficulty telling where tailbone is, if you're struggling then just think of it as half-way between bcl and classic. It might be easier if you post a length photo, and I'm sure people will help you figure out where you are length wise.

I had some trouble figuring out hip length too for a while. Despite having a long-ish torso, there isn't that much space between my waist and hip bones (maybe the narrowest bit of my waist is quite low? I don't know). Posting a picture will help, it's sometimes easier for other people to tell. :)
I am, finally, calling BCL! My hair is a little wavy today and it's still there, so I think it's safe. Picture may or may not happen later, depending on when DBF gets home and whether or not I can coerce him into hair-photo-duty.

I got a trim. My hemline looks a little lopsided but I think that's because the ends on the right have curled under.

UGH. I love how my hair looks when it's down. I love how it feels all soft and smooth and monstrously thick and wavy. But then I cross my arms and it gets caught in my elbows. Or drags on my desk when I sit down. And I'm just like OMG IS LONG HAIR WORTH THIS?!
Yes. Yes it is. :P
I don't wear it down too often, just once, maybe twice a week if I want to feel pretty, but you know, when I do, it's both rewarding and punishing. You know?

I wear my hair down way too often.
I actually was close to tailbone-length several times within the past few years, but never actually made it there. At some times it even feels like it rather got shorter than longer. :/

Alright, I'm going to say this once and I'm probably going to plaster this all over the forum at one point. Of course, mechanical damage is a real thing, but unless you have superfine spiderweb hair you don't need to wear it up 100% to gain length. Keep it out of the way when you're doing physical activities or when it's windy outside and wear it down whenever you have a great hair day. Enjoy your hair. If you've managed to grow past waist without much taper when wearing it down, it'll surely grow even longer when you just take a little better care of it! merekivi, how often have you trimmed between these pictures? I honestly think this could have been the fault of a scissor-happy hairdresser!

It's definitely not the fault of a scissor-happy hairdresser as the last time I saw a hairdresser was about 7 years ago. And I guess this is the problem, at first I just let my hair grow without cutting at all. That worked well for the first 2-3 years, but then my hair didn't get any longer anymore, the ends probably just broke away. So I got myself a pair of hair scissors and did some S&D. But the scissors were very low quality, back then it did more harm than it actually helped. I got better scissors later, but I continued with the S&D which made my hemline become thinner and thus again made the ends break more easily. At least that's my theory as I don't have any other explanation why my hair hasn't gained length in a couple of years.
Last year I let my sister trim my hair. She was quite scissor-happy - but to be honest, it was necessary, the ends just weren't nice anymore. I ended up with about 30 inches after the trim and I already measured 35 in this year, so they are definitely growing again. And I'm trying to take care of them better than before. I hope it stays like that. :)

Miss Blue Eyes, I agree with you for those who have F/M or coarser hair. Even some F ii or iii's, depending on the fineness. For myself - I DO have spiderweb, baby fine fragile hair that breaks if I look at it wrongly. Wearing it down DOES destroy my hair.
That's why I think it's great that we also have lots of threads for those of us with different hair types. Lots of good information from those who do have your hair type.
And no, most people can wear it down occasionally just fine. More than occasionally - know your hair type.

Concerning wearing hair down... well, it probably varies so much. I know I could not get away with wearing my hair loose. My unfortunate combination of fine hair with damaged ends AND living in an insanely windy place means I get intense tangles from wearing it down. Maybe this will change once the damage has been cut out, maybe not. I don't mind wearing my hair up - in fact, I quite like it - but if you like it down and you don't notice any adverse effects, I don't think there should be any pressure to keep it in a protective style just for the sake of it.

Thanks! :) I don't really think I'm hip length, though, because isn't hip length where your hip bones are (so about where your pants sit)? If so, I'm not there yet. When I took that picture, I was about to go to bed and was just wearing a loose t-shirt that hung funny. One of these days I'll take a more accurate picture in a tight shirt that clearly shows the actual length. ^^

YAY I think it worked for once!!! :) My left hand is at BCL, which is currently quite high on me as I have some extra padding at the moment. My right is at TBL, as near as I can get it. I felt around for the end of the coccyx bone (hopefully not TMI), and marked it as nearly as I could. My hair measured at slightly under 37.75" after a trim right before this picture was taken.
Even though I'm close to TBL (which is 38.5" on me), it will take me a while to get there because I'm microtrimming at the moment.
Everyone's new length pictures look so good!!! Welcome to all the new Waist-to-Tailbone growers! :)

I remeasured today, and I found that TBL is actually 38" even on me. I'm soooo close!!! I'll be there next month!!! :happydance: But since my ends are thin, my hair is wavy on the longest layers, and my spine is subject to change in curvature, I'll wait to officially call it until I'm at 38.5", and I probably won't step out of this thread completely until I hit 39" even, which will likely be around September sometime.

A little while: the distance from waist to tailbone is pretty far! :)
When I was pixied, it was easy to mark growth on my face, and facial features are close together: my bangs poked my eyes, end of nose, and lips in just a few months! This measuring down one's backside takes longer, but my hair looks decent now--unlike the shaggy awkwardness from growing a pixie--, so it's not too horrible. Backside features are more subtle and WAY farther apart though! :)

I've been here since I came back to the forums after a long break... last October, I think? I'd hit waist-ish around September, though. I have a pretty short torso and a fast growth rate, so the 8 inches between my waist and tailbone is only a year's growth for me. I spent last winter microtrimming out the bottom of my layers, though, staying between waist and hip, and I might do the same this year between bcl and tailbone because my hemline is alright but I'd rather it be a little thicker. Never again will I cut so many darned layers into my hair. Once it's long enough to bun at its full thickness, that's the shortest I'm cutting it again willingly, even if that doesn't happen until fingertip. :steam

I think I belong here now! My hair has been at "can I call this waist?" for the past few weeks and I think now it really is waist length. (I'm short so waist isn't really that impressive on me, but I'm still excited.) My hair has been waist length many times in my life but I've never managed to get it to tailbone; it usually stalls out a bit past hip. I'm really hoping that this time it will happen for me.

I haven't updated in a while either. We are all either lazy or busy. Lol. Waist to tailbone is the best length to wear your hair down, in my opinion to show off length while it's still manageable. And I've been enjoying it so much. The last time anything was done to my hemline was November so a trim is probably in order soon. Expectedly, there is more split ends and white dots than before when I regularly wore it in buns.
I've even stopped measuring my hair every month so I don't even know the numbers but I'm around hip now. Can I say how much I love this length. Seriously if you guys go past classic or knee and you don't enjoy it anymore, cut back to hip. It's perfect. I love love it!

Haven't been active here for too long too mostly because I cut off 3cm in January which made me fall back so hard on my way to hip.
In the meantime I dyed my hair with indigo 2 times and hennaed the roots 2 times. I'm officially a black-head with red roots now
Aaand I'm back at 83/84 cm now :joy:
Beautiful! I love your hair!
Beautiful texture Dragon Faery, your hair looks like something out of a fairytale.
Aww thank you so much!!!
Heh... when I became a member of LHC, this thread was the very first one I ever wrote in if I dont remember wrong. Its now been 2,5 years and Im still here as Ive been stuck at hip length due to me trimming away old damage. Im hoping to reach BCL by the end of this year and from there I have another 6 months or so to go til I reach TBL. My waist--> tailbone journey has lasted for 3,5 years by then. That feels like quite a long time... For how long has the rest of you been here?
I'm not sure when exactly I got to Waist, since I gave up watching for it and ignored my hair for 2 years. But around this time last year my hair hit BCL for the first time, so I would guess I've been past Waist for about 2 years now. It should take me another 3 to 6 months to get to TBL, depending on trims and growth rate, so I guess the total will be about 2.5 years.
Hooray!!! Welcome!! :)

It has been really inspiring to read about your big chop and I'm quite confident to say that I probably will stay at a similar length at the long run. Maybe a BCL - Hip cut cycle will be what I'm going for. What I wanted to ask you: How big is the difference in spilts and white dots? Like, 50% more? Or is it more drastic?

Thanks missblueeyes :flower:
The majority of my ends are fine. It is mostly the face framing parts that are getting the most damaged since they get caught in a lot of things if you are not diligent, expectedly. That yes would be 50%. The splits that I do find are either incredibly split or still just white dots. It's weird. To answer your question, I would say I get 25% more splits and 25% more dots, while face framing hair is more like 50-75%. I should probably wear half ups more...

Thank you! :) I have some face framing layers and I can confirm that they split more easily than the rest of my hair. I usually blame that on my glasses.
I also re-evaluated my previous statement and I think I want to try out TBL or classic at least once before deciding on a length ot maintain at.

To answer the question of how long I've been in this thread and how long I have to go...
I got here in January 2014, asking if I could call this waist. I hit hip length in May 2014. I have yet to make it to BCL, and it is now a full year since I reached hip. I should be very close to BCL by the end of this year, and hope that I will make it to TBL by the end of 2016. So, it will be about 3ish years for me.

I was really hoping I'd be able to trim back to 38" today, but I still have 1/8" to go before I hit 38" again, so ... oh well. I guess it will be next month instead. Soooo close to TBL and yet sooo far away. I'm mostly ok with the wait, but some days I wish I could just tug on it and gain 3".

Hello ladies, and to all those have recently joint us!
This thread is taking years to be archived, but I see I'm in good company.
I think I can almost call BCL! My hair is now exactly there while stretched, but still bouncing between waist+++ and belt length when wavy, so I'm not sure of how many months before I can officially call it.
Almost time for a new length picture, I suppose.

I'm 5'2" and my waist is at 27.5". 27" doesn't seem unrealistic. If you want to check again, tie a piece of string around your middle, just a little tighter than your skin but not enough to cause a muffin-top effect. Move around for a few minutes, sit down, stand up. Where the string settles is the narrowest part of your middle. Measure to there. If you still have a little way to go, well, I'm sure you can be honorary-waist until you make it all the way. :cheer:

Katyusha,
I'm sure that your measured correctly, and that your hair is waist-length. It's quite possible that either I measured incorrectly, or maybe we have different proportions. For example, I had a 5'2" tall friend, who happened to have beautiful waist-length curly hair, and she had a fairly short body, with long legs. Sadly, she cut her hair quite short when she was about 19, and I don't think she ever re-grew it.

All right guys, I think it's time for me to officially graduate from this thread. My last trim was a couple days ago, now the plan is to see how close I can get to Classic unstretched by Christmas/end of the year. Right now I'm slightly above TBL unstreched and an inch or so below it stretch, so in hair math: above TBL + past TBL stretched = ~TBL?

I didn't use the top of the hip as in waist+, i used the hip bones in the front. Its closer to TBL and more at my wider point of my hips. You can call it either way i think, but there is 2 hip lengths.

Being overweight, it is a tad hard to find my front hip bones. I did my best to find the point that sticks out the most and tracked it around to my back while looking in the mirror. My hair can be stretched to that point. i have lost several inches around my midsection since first estimating my front hip bones and originally I had thought my hip was much lower. (Why/how? I'm not sure?) which might be why I was shocked to actually be there. Glad others think it looks like it has reached there too!
I also realized my typo.... I meant I had been estimating until TBL not waist. Oops.

Beautiful hair Davedecker -- I see some spirals in there so its either a 2b/2c or a full 2c.
Someone asked pages ago about how long people had been/will be here. I've been on this thread since late 2013 and expect to be here for a long time. I've been maintaining at waist to cut out layers and it has taken forever. At first glance my hair is all one length now, but my front face-framing layers are still there. After they go (about 2 inches or so away), I'll be micro trimming less aggressively on my way to at least hip but hopefully a bit longer. I'm just not sure how long my hair can grow with a good hemline and the hemline is important to me.

Measured after my wash today and my hair has lost 1/16" due to shedding. Rats.
And no, it isn't a big shed. It's just that my current shed hairs have included the ones from my longest layer. Sigh. I know it isn't the end of the world. It's just disappointing because I'm soooo cloooose to Tailbone. I only need 3/4" to get there. (And yes, that's taking into account the lost 1/16").

1/16th inch is in my margin of error for my measurements. How often do you measure?
cat11
June 6th, 2015, 11:12 AM
I haven't been there yet so this is somewhat hearsay on my part, but I've got the impression from hanging around here that Tailbone can be a difficult milestone to pass because the hair is open to new forms of mechanical damage- sitting on it, rubbing on chairs, ect, if it's worn down. I've seen that a lot of people stall here and get breakage or shedding at the bottom of their hair... maybe it's related?
On the other hand, 1/16th of an inch is such an incredibly small increment that you could have actually lost nothing at all and it could just be normal variation in measurement. No matter what your hair type is it can lay differently sometimes... I think this is far more likely

Dragon Faery,
The explanations that Laura Longlocks and Cat11 have given for your recent loss of length are all possibilities. Maybe when you re-measure, you may find that you made a mistake, and you're at the length that you were before. It is upsetting to lose, or appear to have lost some length, no matter how small. Hope you find that your hair grows really soon. You're getting so close to tailbone now, so don't despair.

Thank you, ladies! I had DH remeasure for me, and I didn't actually lose any length after all, but I didn't gain any either. I'm still at 37.75" or a little past, except with my 5 longest hairs. My longest hairs are shedding at the moment. I can tell because every time I look at my longest layer it's thinner and thinner than it was before. At the beginning of last month there were about 20 of them, and in February there were too many to count.
1/16th inch is in my margin of error for my measurements. How often do you measure?
Every time I wash, which varies. I measure wet and tugged straight, which works for me since my hair isn't very stretchy. It's the only way I can get a consistent measurement.
Yeah, you're right. I've noticed that TBL is often the place where stalls happen and mechanical damage gets more prominent. I don't wear my hair down, and I'm not getting an increase in splits compared with the past few years, so I don't think I have any extra mechanical damage. But the ends ARE old. And they are shedding.

Thank you :) And you're all right. It's not a huge difference. I'm just so impatient to get to Tailbone and also to get rid of the thin ends. I guess the shed will take care of the thin ends eventually, but I wish it had waited until an inch or so after Tailbone to start!

Shedding is very inconvenient. It would have been nice if it had waited for you to get to tailbone, but I suppose it just happens when it's ready to. I don't remember shedding hair after my first daughter, but I definately noticed it after my second daughter. Last year, I ended up going from just below fingertip-length, back to waist, as I reluctantly had a very small section timmed, to even things out after all the shedding. The only good thing I found with shedding was that it got rid of a lot of split and damaged hair.
You're doing really well, and don't have far to go. Hope to hear that you've reached tailbone really soon.

My 1" (2.5 cm) trim was on March 28th, and today is June 7th, so it has been ten weeks. I measured today and finally made it back to 86 cm (barely), which is where I started before my trim. Yay, now I get to grow into new territory! It's below my waistband on my pants, but not quite to the top of my pockets in back yet. I think I have about 2 inches to go until I make it to top-of-pocket length, which incidentally, is pretty much synonymous with BCL for me. I need to hunt down my camera and take a length shot today since I just washed it and I'm due for a photo.

Thanks, Crumpet. I have definitely emphasized quality over quantity, but I've managed to get some decent growth at the same time. TBL is a year and a half away, but BCL should be attainable by the end of the year. I don't plan on any more trims for the time being. I don't think I'll need another trim until the end of this year, at the soonest.

TBL is my goal! I don't really measure at all (mostly out of laziness). I just go by the visual appearance.
By the way, how do you define where hip is, if you don't mind me asking? I think I may be confused. I assumed it was where my hip bones started. But it seems like the visual charts I've seen on Google Images vary quite a bit in where hip actually is. If it's the widest point in my hips, then TBL and hip are very close on me, if not in the same spot. Does it just depend on body type, or what?

The top of the hip bones on the sides is the usual measurement around here. It's the shortest (you get there sooner!) and the most consistent measurement point as long as you're standing straight.

I apologize for not posting as often as I used to - life has thrown me some curve balls lately, and I haven't had the time to put in to the forum. But after receiving some bad news, I came here for a pick me up, and such lovely pictures of hair did indeed make me smile! (Is that weird? I'm going to go with not.)
As for me, I'm about 4 inches from my goal of BCL. After having an inch and a half cut off in May my ends feel so much better that I think I can make it the rest of the year with just S&D. Yay, keep all the length! I may or may not grow on to TBL after that - you all know how time on LHC makes you change your goals. After all, I started out just wanting to get back to hip...

I haven't posted in this thread for a while but my hair is almost covering my whole back now. I could call traditional tailbone in another two inches, but I'm about 5.5 inches away from true tailbone/mid-butt. That's a little less than 7.5 months of my full growth (0.75 in/month) so I won't quite make it this year, but this length feels alright. Like, it's not as long as I want it, I don't know where I'll want to stop yet, but I don't feel the pressure to grow-grow-grow as fast as I can anymore. And now that I know I can get back to an alright length within 3 years, probably in 2 years if I didn't trim the whole time, the idea of having to emergency-cut back to pixie isn't as scary as it was before. I wouldn't do it unless I absolutely had to, but it wouldn't be the end of my long hair dreams the way I thought it might up to this point.

It is summer here! It is going to be 90F+ all week, with high humidity, which is truly as awful as it sounds. Since it's really only the beginning of summer, and school is out so I have no need to look presentable until August, its the perfect time to implement a strict regimen of benign neglect! Meaning that not much will change from my regular routine, but I am going to try extra hard to not measure or obsess over the ends until school starts back. And, of course, to keep it up and off my back and neck as much as possible. After all, nobody needs a hair blanket in the heat of the summer.
Does anyone change their hair care routines during the warmer months? I know many of us change to add more moisture during the dry winters, but what have you found that works better during the hot and (maybe) humid months of summer?

RE: Summer routine
I can wash once a week in the winter without any problem, but can't get away with this in the summer! I work out nearly ever day and do some really long (sweaty!) runs, which adds to the general heat and humidity issue. I often just do a mid week co-wash, which is gentler than a full wash.
My only other change is that I stop doing deep treatments in the summer. I don't really feel like I need them. I just use a bit of oil or nightblooming's panacea on my ends.

I wonder if it has to do with the humidity, but I have noticed that my hair isn't absorbing oil like it normally does. Maybe a switch to creams is in order. Which do you like?

Yes, I need to wash more often in the summer (runner here, and a salty sweater!) but I've always just done a regular old wash. I'll try making that 3rd wash a CO-wash and see if I can get away with it!

What is DE cream? Tell me more! I'm pretty into my Nightblooming goodies at the moment and don't really need to buy more, but I like to keep informed of delightful hair treats.

Does anyone change their hair care routines during the warmer months? I know many of us change to add more moisture during the dry winters, but what have you found that works better during the hot and (maybe) humid months of summer?
Ironically, I'm looking for a good warm hat. We have very hot summers, so indoor AC is a requirement, and DH likes the air in the house to be about 6 degrees colder than what I find comfortable. I'm hoping if I keep my head warm this summer my growth won't stall (more than it already has --- though it's not really a stall; it's just more shedding than I'd like).

I find that wearing a plastic shower cap around the house a few hours steams up my hair and moisturizes it with a greenhouse effect. It's super attractive too.

:) I'll bet it is! I'm picky about things on my head, so I need something soft. And ironically I don't own a shower cap. But I guess if I get desperate I can use a plastic grocery bag until I find a hat. :) Not quite as attractive as a shower cap, but ...

 this works well, especially if its movie night. get out the tub of icecream and steam away.

My summer routine will likely be using cold water for the whole shower lol. (We don't have ac at my house so it's HOT). It's humid and I am sweating, but I plan to keep washing only once a week if I can manage to keep stretching.anyone have any go-to solutions for the sweat? I used baby powder during winter, but it smells and makes my scalp itch.

Have you tried scalp-only washes with water-only or with a diluted shampoo (applied from a squirt bottle)?
The length is covered in plastic cap or two and remains dry. You can do it with a braid (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VwREj8Kadlo from 1:30) or a bun (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7VBOVM-dHlc). HTH! :flower:

fiğrildi I'd say you could totally call it. At least 3 or 4 of your curls are definitely at the same level as the bottom of your thumb, that's more than just a few strands.
I would call that hip. The curls shrink a lot too, so you don't have to always count them when curled up. its definitely hip. Wonderful braid too :D
0.0 sorry if this is a bit creepy, but i hadn't noticed where youre from till now. i'm going to be in Iceland in another month!- everywhere except your corner of it. haha [i'm so excited]
Definitely Hip enough for me! Congrats! :blossom: You have lovely hair!
fiğrildi You have my dream hair. No joke. I'm jealous. <3 Congrats on making hip!
Thank you all! :o :flowers:
Hope you have a great journey, JadedByEntropy ;) we've had a very hard winter (the worst in 25 years), but the summer is finally here!
And happy, happy birthday to you, FallingDarkness!! :blossom: :cake:

Guys, I have been having some problems with velcro ends since my last trim, which was small and I posted on this thread. Did I not take off enough? I don't know what it is, but the only thing that helps even a little lately is vinegar.
Do these look dry or unhealthy?

They mat up something terrible though. I wish I could get them to stay smooth. Tempted to trim, but I know if I do, I will not gain the length I am hoping for! [slow grower here]

They seem healthy enough for me! What boosts the smoothness on my hair is when I mix a little bit of olive oil with my conditioner and apply it as usual.

The only thing that help mine when they get like that is either a chelating shampoo or trim as a last resort. However judging by the photo they don't look bad to me. :)
