I'm glad I'm not alone. Thanks for the empathy. Four inches! So much length! It would take me about a year to regrow 4 inches. I would love to be able to take about 2 inches off and have really fresh ends, but I'm going to ignore that thought until my hair gets a little longer. I forgot to take my SD card with me to school today, so no pics yet.
I was so sure I would grow to TBL then maintain a while, but sometimes I think I'll grow to classic before I maintain. Then I think to myself, why not wait to maintain until fingertip? And then I think about how I want fresh, even ends at every length. That requires regular trimming, so I guess I just need to do my quarterly trims of 1 cm each and go with that for now. I can't decide which I want more, length or a thick hem. Sometimes I think the length isn't going to be possible without keeping the hem thick. Maybe thicker ends protect one another more? I don't know if there's anything to that theory, but I do know that I love a thick hem on long, straight hair like mine. Oh what does it matter right now? I am not even BCL yet. I am definitely not at a length where I would like to maintain, so I should just stick to my quarterly 1 cm trims and call it good, right?
Yeah, sorry for all the rambling.
EDIT: I think what I am wanting is a shaped hem. I'm not sure if my self-trimming is giving me what I want. I want a very soft U shape, with a slight undercut so that it tends to naturally curl under at the ends instead of flipping outward. I know that in order to get the hem I want, I will have to visit a salon and be prepared to lose inches of hair and I'm just not ready to part with inches right now because I want length. Self-trimming for a blunt hem (sorry, Feye's u-shape looks way to complicated and I'm afraid of losing too much hair or ending up with too deep a U-shape) will have to do for now until I reach a length where I am ready to maintain, or even lose a few inches. At what length will I feel ready to lose inches of hair??? That sounds absurd! I don't think I'll be ready to lose inches of hair ever again in my life!
Out of experience, I know that having a thicker hem makes your hair look longer. Last year I cut around 3.5" (if you remember that) and everyone here said I grew my hair soooo long... Though that didn't make sense off course.

I recently realized that this is very true! When I see pics of a thick hem, the hair looks longer to me than someone with the same length, but with a v-cut or thinner ends. I wonder why this is the case? I have a v-cut myself, so maybe this is why my hair still looks short to me.
And thanks for the lovely compliment, CurlMonster! :) My hair used to be so dull. The CWC method has really made a difference!

I think its a collection of the average length. Yeah, its great to have the pointy V at BSL, but having ALL of them there is overall longer. Makes since...
Anyway, New Feb Photo 1st of the new year.

I have to say, I thought Feye's U-cut looked complicated to me too, until I tried it. It is much easier than you think! I do the normal, part my hair down the middle and make 2 pigtails business, and then I look pretty much straight forward to get the amount of U that I want. If you trim even a cm off you won't notice a change in length, since the bulk of that cm will be coming off the side, where you are making it curve up. The instructions say that after you have trimmed both sides you should make a single low pony at the base of your neck, slide the holder all the way down, then trim off the little point that sticks out. Well, I've never had a little point to trim off, maybe because I do such a subtle U. I don't know how you could do an undercut on yourself, but with your 1c hair it might curl under on its own (or it might flip out! My 1c/2a hair can't decide which it likes to do better).
I hope that helps if you feel like taking the plunge and cutting! Just be careful to not look down, or you will get a deeper U! And after all, you can cut it deeper if you want, but, as first hand experience proved, you can't make it less deep. I'll try to post a pick of my hemline today, which I admit is a bit deeper than I want. I decided to try a deeper U, and naturally I didn't like the result.

yes, i have the same line of thinking. 90 per cent of the times i am only finding splits in my layers where there is less hair compacted together. Plus my layers were trimmed last year at the same time i would trim my hemline so it isn't due to lack of trimming. I also worry that damage/splits may travel up the hair shaft faster than any substantial growth if you know what i mean. My hair grows fairly fast (7-8 inches a year on average) but i have shrinkage so it ends up looking more like 4. I was going to trim mine in March (last trim was in November) but decided to re schedule it for the 19th of this month since March will be very busy for me to worry about trims. Then either in June or July. I tend to get busy in the spring and summer months so hopefully focus will be elsewhere and layers will have grown *magically* by the next time i notice them :magic:...that is if i don't end up trimming my hair back to waist (fed up with layers!!) lol
i like u shapes, i think it compliments all hair types and textures! :flower:

i agree Johannah, i have seen people in real life with BSL length hair whose hair looked longer on them than someone with waist length hair whose ends were thinning/see through. i cut 4-5 inches last year (gained little growth but got rid of a ton of old chemical damage) and am aiming to cut at least another 2-2,5 inches this year to even out layers. i think in the end it will be worth it if it means i will enjoy my hair/hemline more. Anyone else here considering not trimming their hair in 2016?

I thought I wanted more length this year, but after seeing this up close, I think I need to do monthly trims until this hemline looks better. I see about four inches that need to come off. That's about a whole year of growth for me. I might take a whole inch on my next trim February 28th, and then see how it is.

Thank you very much! On the first pic, my hair was on day 4th after making 12 braids on wet hair. I love it, but it takes me 2 hours to make 14-16 braids on wet hair and I just don't have the patience for that.

Gorgeous hair, Dessi! I love the braided pic; that styles looks awesome on you! Leaving the braid tassels long is such a great look, IMO.
And LauraLongLocks, I think your hemline looks fine! If I were you, I wouldn't do any more trimming at all until you reach your next milestone (BCL? or TBL?), then maybe take an inch, if you feel like you need it. I know you want to get rid of the last layering, but it honestly doesn't look bad at all. Beautiful color too! :)

i think your hemline looks good Laura :flower:
my hemline looks choppier than yours because of multiple layers and old damage i assume ( i think ), the waves just disguise it very well, if i straighten it it's another story :p i wouldn't trim more than a couple of inches max if that was mine because i honestly think it looks pretty good ( the slight unevenness some of us get is likely a result of hairs growing at different rates) that way you'd still get half of the growth and be happier with your hemline?

Torrin Paige: https://www.youtube.com/user/torrinpaige
Even though these videos prove that long hair provides so many options, I think after experimenting a little, most people with newly long hair settle into a few everyday favorites. Personally my go-to style is a simple side-parted cinnamon bun near the nape. I've only recently gained the length needed for it to stay put like that, and I love it. It's the hair equivalent of a black dress - it can look both elegant and casual depending on the rest of your outfit :D

Hey yall, it's official - I need a trim. Even though I have no splits, my ends are crunchy and dry no matter what I do. :( I have to own up to the fact that I might need a trim - a REAL trim. I feel like I need an inch to an inch and a half off, but I'm afraid cut so much because I just made waist stretched and if I do that I'll be nowhere close. :( I don't trust myself with scissors so self-microtrimming isn't really an option. . . Just wanted to check in with my waist to tailbone fellows and see if you have any advice.
It's so scary to get a hair cut. D:

Not in this thread, but I can help with the above question. The clarifying shampoo is too get rid of product build up. The chelating shampoo is to get rid of mineral deposits and such that can end up on the hair from your water. My understanding is any SLS shampoo with clarify product, but you need a shampoo that specifically states that it is for chelating. Not everyone gets build up from water and you may not see any difference but I've read some people get really crunchy ends and a chelating shampoo helps.
I get a lot of build up from our water, I use my chelating shampoo every 2 or 3 weeks. Mine doesn't produce crunchy ends so much but a dingy yellow/red build up that changes my color.
Hope that helps:)

Chelating should clarify too. I use Joico's clarifying shampoo which I understands chelates too.
I like deep conditioning by adding honey to my conditioner. And then I like to add a Shea butter product called Nightblooming's panacea to my ends after I wash.
But we all know what works for one of us doesn't always work for the others.

Thank you, everyone, for your compliments!
VERY nice. Still in no need of a trim either. :D great color
Thank you, I do only trim once or twice a year. I'm not that concerned with my hemline at the moment.
As others have said, chelating surely can help. It did help my constant crunchy ends a lot some months ago. We have hard water and also some iron from old pipes. No chlorine, though. As an alternative to chelating shampoo, you could also dissolve some citric and ascorbic acid in cone-free conditioner and do a treatment with that. Amla could also help, if you're into herbs.

How long is tailbone for you guys?
Achlys
February 10th, 2015, 07:03 AM
When I count it as the actual tip of my tailbone, then ~38". That's an inch above the ground when I sit down straight. Because I have to be proper like that. And classic is something like 40". By the looks of it, many declare TBL earlier, but I haven't really examined anyone's backside in depth to confirm that they do.

Yes WD is right, I was typing tired and in rereading that realized I wasn't making much sense as much sense as I thought I was.
I don't use a clarifying shampoo then a chelating shampoo anymore, although I have seen it recommended that way, I didn't find a 2 step shampoo necessary and it was really drying.
I don't know if you use sulfate shampoos or not, if you do use them at least once in a while, that should take care of the clarifying part, which will remove oils, silicones (product gunk as I like to think of it) that can build up and cause problems. Right now I'm using a Pantene shampoo, it seems to work fine for that. If the sulfates work to get rid of the crunchy ends, then maybe you don't need anymore than that.
If your ends are still crunchy and dry after a sulfate wash and condition, then you might want to find a chelating shampoo, which if it has sulfates in it will clarify as well. Chelating shampoos (or shampoos with chelating ingredients) remove minerals deposits and additives from water that can end up deposited on your hair. I don't have any other experiences with other shampoos that help chelate, only used the Lanza, so I'm not much help with other product recommendations. The main ingredient that chelates is EDTA if I remember right. If you do chelate, slather on the moisture afterwards, it is drying. Also vinegar is also mildly chelating, I use a diluted vinegar rinse after every wash and it seems to help.
Hope some of that rambling helps, and you find some help with your crunchy ends, I'd hate to see you have to trim if you didn't want to. :(

Thanks Sterlyn! Where do you find your chelating shampoo? And would I clarify and chelate in the same wash? Sounds drying.
i use redken hair cleansing cream, it's supposed to be a chelating shampoo. I was terrified to use it at first because i'd read mixed reviews, some said it really dries out their hair. Well, my experience was very positive, although it did strip everything away from my hair more than any other clarifying shampoo i'd tried (that dreaded squeaky clean feeling) i didn't find it drying on my wavy dry ish hair at all, i followed up with a deep conditioner and next thing i knew my ends felt so, so good! I chelated two weeks ago and my hair still feels wonderful at the moment. The other thing that has helped my hair too is ACV rinses after every wash, they really helps.
i second what others have said chelate or clarify before you get a trim if trimming may be upsetting to you but don't forget to follow up with a deep conditioning treatment :)

Tailbone is 103 cm, which converts to 40.55 inches. I like doing my measurements in centimeters. The smaller increments make me feel like I am making progress.

Thanks for the above, I have been wanting to try to find another shampoo to use for chelating/clarifying when my bottle of Lanza runs out. Hopefully I can find this or the Joico clarifying at Ulta the next time I'm there.
ETA: ok really done butting into this thread, but I hope to be here officially within the next 6-8 months.:o

you're welcome and you can butt into this thread as much as you want ;) i heard good things about the Joico one, the only reason i didn't get it is because i believe it has hydrolized keratin and my hair doesn't do well with it :)

How long is tailbone for you guys?
Having just measured properly, tailbone is 36 inches (one less than I had guessed!) so once I start growing again instead of maintaining, I'll only have about one year's growth to go before tailbone, with no trims.
I'm only 5'2, though, and my torso is so compact I have trouble bending too far to the side because my rib cage already nearly meets my hip bone when I'm standing. All the goals so far have been pretty close together, all things considered. Part of me dreads going past classic because it's going to take forever between milestones and I've been thoroughly spoiled so far.

LauraLongLocks, I think your hair is gorgeous! Thanks!
I'm going for 4 inches as well. We'll support each other while trimming ;) Yay! A partner in trimming!
:) BCL is my next milestone. The layering has blended perfectly well, that is true. And thanks for the color compliment. It's henna-enhanced. I'm thinking it's time to apply henna again, but I'm sort of lazy. The nice thing about henna applied as an ombre is that I am not a slave to it. I want my ends to be thicker and to not have as many different lengths to maintain with S&D. The sooner I get rid of those ends, the sooner I make my life a bit easier.
i think your hemline looks good Laura :flower:
my hemline looks choppier than yours because of multiple layers and old damage i assume ( i think ), the waves just disguise it very well, if i straighten it it's another story :p i wouldn't trim more than a couple of inches max if that was mine because i honestly think it looks pretty good ( the slight unevenness some of us get is likely a result of hairs growing at different rates) that way you'd still get half of the growth and be happier with your hemline? Thank you! I'm not going to cut a lot all at once. I'm going to take an inch on my next trim (February 28th), which is the largest trim I have had in over two years. After that I will reassess how my hem looks and feels.
I've been MIA for a few months, and I have to say that your hair is looking absolutely gorgeous Laura! It seems much longer than the last time I was on the boards :) My favorite photo of the three is your "before", but I totally understand wanting fresh ends. Thank you. I do love fresh ends and it has been a long time since I trimmed enough to really feel fresh ends. I hope one inch will make a big difference for me on my next trim.
I love the pic in PJs. Laura is so cute.
Leave it to me to keep things classy! ;)
I'm thinking/hoping my 1 inch trim will give me the boost I want. The ends thin drastically in the last four inches, and I want those frayed ends gone. I'm hoping that 5 mm per month trims will be sufficient to trim away that taper after my 1 inch trim. Already my ends are noticeably thicker than they were five to six months ago. The ends are thinner than a pencil right now, but that's better than when they were thinner than a coffee stir stick.

it's cute how everyone is built differently :) the dreaded zone on me is mid back/waist to tailbone, it is taking forever! Once i get past bcl classic won't take long but i don't even know if i want to go all the way to classic or stop at tailbone, depends on how it looks like on me and feels like i guess (my aim is a thick and blunt-ish hemline). Your hair is looking really good by the way :flower:

Saige that's awesome! Your hair looks so healthy and thick! :D
I love reading how everyone is build and where your "hair steps" are!
I'm 5'3 "tall" ;) for me it goes as followed:
- waist: 29.9"
- hip: 33.8"
-tailbone: 37.7"
I'm currently at 32.6" not far away from hip but it feels like forever ^^
Recently I also feel that my goals have changed. Initially when I started growing at 23.6" my goal was to reach tailbone because I could not imagine that I would ever want longer hair as it seemed to be the limit of "comfortable hair length" to me (if you know what I want to say  ) but right now I find myself thinkinh: Why won't you let them grow to fingertips? I know that may not sound like a big thing but for me who has never had hair longer than BSL until now that thought feels super exciting :o
(Sorry if my thoughts bore you, it just feels so good writing them down)
So for February I can report 83cm/32.6"

If you want to keep your length, you could try microtrimming, that way you could stay at waist and start getting rid of damage. :)

I feel the same way. I want my hair ever longer, but can't live with yucky ends. I just did a S&D session after neglecting that mission for a few weeks. Oh my goodness, what a lot of splits! I blame skipping deep conditioning a few weeks and using a horrible shampoo once about a week or so ago. It was Tresseme Naturals Moisture shampoo. Hated it. Made my hair feel rough, coated, and like straw. I had to rewash it the next day to get it feeling somewhat good again.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to my 1" trim. I want fresh ends again. Hope yours and mine both grow back fast and we won't miss it for too long. Trimming helps me retain my growth more than not trimming. I'm probably going to continue with 5 mm monthly trims after I take off that inch.

chelating shampoos contain specific chelating agents (can't remember their names now but if you look a few pages back on this thread they have been mentioned) that can help remove mineral build up, chlorine etc. They are especially helpful to those of us who live in areas where water is harder. Mine is semi hard (they change it seasonly) and using it made a huge difference in my hair, it solved my build up issue which a clarifying shampoo wasn't doing on its own. I think (but could be wrong) a chelating shampoo clarifies aswell so no need to use one of those if you're chelating.
I don't know if longer hair grows slower but what could be happening in cases is if there is a considerable amount of damage or splits growth may appear to be stunt because of breakage and weaker strands. By the way, my hair does not grow evenly either, it grows much faster in places so i could never have an even hemline if i left it untouched for months :) Give it sometime, maybe it's a winter thing? Mine picks up its pace in spring/summer.
I will be trimming next week, was going to go for 0,5 every 3 to 4 months but i might very well get rid off a whole inch because i am tired of layers hahaha

I want to see how much they think I need off, and then go from there. I don't think I want to lose any more than an inch, but preferably only half an inch... So maybe if they want me to cut off more than an inch I compromise on 3/4 and come back a month later when I regained some length? I know that I'm going to wear my hair up for the next month in shame because I'm sad that I'm losing length.

After a big jump of growth at the end of the year, I only got 1/4" this month. Oddly, my hair felt so much longer this month. I am doing the quarterly photo taking challenge so I should have not bothered measuring, but I have been trying some hair growth stuff. I will give it one more month, then I can say I gave all major speed up your growth a try and go back to doing nothing.

i never got less than 3 inches taken off (i have only been to the hairdressers twice in my life) but yours might be more understanding. yes, maybe more frequent and smaller trims would help, i think it's worth discussing it with them. Do you have any splits or is it just the crunchiness? If you see no splits than i think smaller trims are a good idea because the splits won't be travelling up before you can grow your hair longer.
Don't be ashamed of your beautiful hair, i understand your attachment to length but remember it is just a factor, there is more to beautiful hair than that and yours is truly gorgeous as it is! :flower:

Fallingdarkness -- I agree that hairdressers usually take off way more than is necessary. I would suggest you tell them precisely how much you want to have taken off and be very clear with them that you'll be very upset if they take off more. Ask them to show you what an inch looks like and maybe even make them use a measuring tape to ensure that it is correct. Good luck!
I'm about 2.5 inches away from one-length hair. I'll still have trimming required to get the hair above my final layer cleaned up, but I'll take that off slowly but surely. I'm trimming 1 inch in a few weeks and then 1-1.5 inches a few months later. After that, I'll just do occasional microtrims to keep my hemline in good order. In about July, I should be able to start growing properly for the first time since I joined the LHC. Hip, here I come!

Hip, here I come!
i admire your perserverance crumpet, well done! :)
my layers (i have about 4 different lengths but they don't look like pretty layers, just random) will take years to grow out fully but i'll be happy enough when the longest set meets my hemline (i think they are 3 or 4 inches away now), it's one of the reasons why i will be trimming my hemline often this year. So you are an inspiration to me and hopefully i am as patient as you! :D

I intended to only trim a half inch off my hair, but it ended up nearer to a full inch on the longest bits. I don't know if it was just a section growing much faster than the others or if I trimmed way too much. With all my layered bits, it's hard to get a secure ponytail near the end to trim, even with help from mom.
I might wash today instead of tomorrow and see how it looks, and if I'm really back to skimming waist or if I'm just being silly about trimming more hair than I expected to. Darn my short torso!

I asked them how much I needed off, and they said 1/2 an inch to an inch, so I compromised and said 3/4 of an inch all around, so that way I could get rid of my final layer.
It's really nice to have a full, thick, noncrunchy hemline again (I just LOVE running my hands gently through my hair and feeling how soft it is all the way through), but my hair doesn't hit my waist anymore, and I lost my tape measure so I don't even know how long it is. I don't want to downgrade a thread so if it's okay with you lovely gorgeous haired ladies I'm gonna stick around. It should only take about a month for me to regain my length, anyways. :P

Hello, I have been silently on this thread for some months lol
I have found that my hair lately has imrpoved a lot, and I thinks it is thanks to coconut oil. Oh my god, coconut oil is like the holy water for long hair, don't you think so? So I wanted to share my improvement, mainly in the ends and on my layers.
Now I believe I will be able to grow it longer! :hollie:

Hi, Just wondering is anyone else's hair getting heavy in this waist to tailbone length? I am curly3b at 32 inches and 4.5 inches thick and the weight is really getting heavy, especially when wet. Is there anyone else beginning to go through this like I am? I am about 4 inches from tbl now and my layers have almost all reached waist length, so I definitely feel the new progressing weight. Is there a bun that seems to work well to distribute the weight better? I was a lwb with a hairstick for most of this past year, but now I am finding that I need to start using my claw clips again for a secure hold, like before when my hair wasn't long enough for a lwb! This length point is proving to being very interesting. In some ways I am actually missing my waist length hair, but I definitely will not cut back to that length. This is all uncharted length territory for me. I am excited to be at this length, ie. having it touch my hips, wrap around my ribs and hug me in the shower, having my hair brush against my arm when I am on the puter-- it's tickling the inside of my elbow and my forearm!! All very exciting new progress... Hmmmm :ponder:

YaY! what a wonderful place to be! I too have a 4.5 ponytail, but a lot of mine thins out around hip. i'm at 37.5 inches and 3-4 inches from tail bone as well. Yes, it is heavy! i'm not even very curly and its a lot. I've found i've been wearing my hair down a TON more at this length just because it attacks people in buns and they stick out so far that it feels like its pulling me down sometimes. haha When i can, i do two side braids to contain it a bit. I found one really awesome bun and flat compared to others....i can't entirely recall its name. The link bun is also my go-to and was just able to get that one at your length. its flat enough it doesn't hang funny and gets stronger when you have enough ends to tuck.

I'm 32 inches and 3 inches until waist. It will be about 12 inches until tailbone and about 18 inches until classic.
Classic is my goal length of 50 inches but it will probably take me about 4 or 5 years to get there. My hair circumference is 5.25 and it is heavier the longer it gets but there are many hairtoys to choose from to hold up big heavy hair. There's people with knee or floor length thick hair and they manage to keep it up day after day.
There's over sized acrylic sticks, XL to mega flexis, hair forks etc., that work great.
Soon I'll be joining the cool kids :agree:

LCT - Since just past waist, my hair has been getting heavier. I tend to notice braids are heavier and some buns, if not well-anchored, can pull on parts of my scalp. I especially notice lately that my buns tend to sag in back and pull from the hairline. I have better luck when I anchor my bun with two elastic bands as I am sure you have seen JJJ Longhair do in her videos. My hair is 85 or 86 cm right now (can't remember which), past hip, and last time I checked my circumference it was 8.5 cm.

Well, you are tall, so just go by your measured length instead of body markers. I mean, your hair is absolutely gorgeous with no layers and the envy of many, including me!! Yes, my hair definitely gets heavy - especially when wet my neck aches sometimes xD
And plaits pull sometimes if they aren't correctly distributed. So for me, frequent hair redoings and sizeable hair toys do the job. :)
I'm also hoping to reach tailbone properly soon!
I know some people may have already called it, but I feel I should hit my coccyx bone more solidly before leaving this thread. :)

Hi Dreamsheep! Thanks for commenting so I know I am on track! Is this your first time at this length? Congrats on reaching or being an eyelash away from tbl! This waist to tbl is a very interesting experience since I have never been here before. Glad to know I am not alone with dealing with the heaviness. I cut layers into my waistlength+ hair last June as a way to deal with the increased heaviness of all one length and have regretted those layers!!
Someone suggested the link bun below, and I found and posted a tutorial youtube video on it. It seems to spread out the bun horizontally across the back of your head, and distributes the weight of your hair. My hair is now just long enough to do this bun so I am going to do this from now on. I guess we are lucky to have such thick hair, but it does present some difficult issues. Anyways, thanks for posting your thoughts! I will never recut layers again since they are a pain to grow out and I hate how my hemline tapers. Live and learn I guess! :agree:

Welcome, Brattina! Your hair is very pretty and I love the colour!
I suppose one of the few advantages of fine, thin hair is that even when it used to be at TB I never had weight issues. :p On the contrary, even then I was "poofing" up my buns to make them look bigger! But I've heard a lot of people with longer hair say sectioning helps - and the vortex bun should be a good one to distribute weight for anyone! (though it's a pain in the rear to do, at least for me. I dislike a lot of pins).

i am experiencing the same at 38 or so inches, i am also 4 inches away from solid tailbone. the weight of it is why i am not considering growing mine past classic and i can only imagine it will only get heavier the layers grow out. I like cinnabuns (and sometimes i distribute my hair in 3 braids and put it in a bun). Also i find forks work best for my hair at this length although i wear flexis (mega and xlarge) often too, sticks don't hold so well for me.

I have a feeling i will be trimming very often this year or "maintaining" between hip and tailbone until i am satisfied with my hemline so i will be here with all of you for a long while :bounce:

The longest I reached was tailbone over Christmas, and I trimmed back to BCL :)
So pretty much, yeah ^^
I do have layers, which definitely help, but recently my hair has been feeling a lot heavier (the bad sort, the one that makes me wonder... should I cut? Is it my hair giving me head aches?) - but I do love it so much. If I manage to go this year without trimming, I'll probably (definitely) microtrim this year, as I find damage starts catching up.
Do you have a link for the link bun (LOL redundancy!)? I haven't tried it, but usually I do my half nautilus (hair can only just about muster a full one, but it pulls too tightly) and a LWB. I can never get cinnabuns to sit comfortably unless I use my giant fork...
Disc buns I know work but they are too much effort...

I'm at tailbone with a slightly over 4" circ and good size taper, and I don't find my hair heavy (yet). There's brief moments of where it feels heavy-ish (in the shower, full of conditioner, or right after I put it up once it's fully dried) but they only last a couple minutes, then it's back to not even knowing there's a bun eating my head.

Thanks! Hehe. I joined LHC August of 2013 at shoulder length, trying to get to APL, but needing help. I've trimmed several times to keep my ends looking decent. Waist was originally my goal, but now it doesn't feel long enough LOL so here im a :D
My go-to buns are the LWB, LW Pony, disc bun, and the (modified) nautilus, I need to try out some more! I have a heavy preference for dutch braids, too :p

Yes, my hair is heavy! It's about hip length, 4.25 inch circumference, and very little taper. I used to always have layers put in and get it thinned out to help with the weight, but I haven't yet this time around (although I'm considering it). The nice thing about hair taking so long to grow is that you have time to get used to the weight and learn to deal with it. However, I am approaching the length where, last time my hair was long, I remember getting lots of headaches and neck soreness.
For me, the biggest thing is to make sure the weight is distributed in the bun well, and to make sure that it is anchored properly. If I "catch" only a little bit of scalp hair I'll wind up with a major sore spot and headache, but if I get it done right my bun can last all day with no problems. Ponytails are pretty much a no-go however, as they pull too hard on my hairline and just end up sagging really pathetically after an hour or so.

Well, I think I can safely say I didn't trim too much yesterday, and I may have had more growth than I thought lately!
http://i59.tinypic.com/1zqvlo0.jpg
The bottom hemline isn't as spread out and straight because my hair has a lot of bunwave to it in this pic, but my thumb is at my waist and it's not below the bottom of my hair! :happydance: I was so worried the inch yesterday would put me over, especially after trimming an inch and finding myself at waist a month ago (signature pic, thumb at hip). Either my hair had shrunk in that pic, or I've had two inches of growth in the last month, or maybe a little of both.
Also, I've discovered that my hair is of a length now to make a capelet. Not quite enough to really keep me warm until the layers catch up, but at least it's enough to make me smile (I was trying to keep a straight face in this picture).

Hi Dreamsheep!
Here is the link for the ....."link bun!" LOL....;)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7kjaIZBQ-Zc
I am always hesitant to start trimming even a half inch since I start to get addicted and then have trouble stopping. (Ohh.. there is an uneven strand, and there is one and then on and on... lol.)
I am due for a 1 inch trim in June, so hopefully 2 more inches in 4 more months??? Hope I can wait that long due to tangly velcro ends. I an also still having trouble with my nautilus and my lwb is still my go to bun, but I do like this link bun, but I can barely due it to length not being quite there yet. Let's hang in there!

So anyone have issues with bunning when your longest hairs hit BCL? I'm there, and my ends are a bit tapered at this point. my hair doesn't like to cooperate like it did at waist length. Tangles everywhere. Does it get better at tailbone or should I just bite the bullet and have my sis take a half inch off? Last time I had it cut was in august and my sis gave me slight layering at a low angle so that my ends wouldn't mat together so bad. This is before I found lhc and waist was my goal. I have never had my hair longer than BCL in my life and I am wondering if keeping with my trim schedule of 1 half inch per 6 months will really hurt my growth to tailbone and then classic. Thoughts?

I'm a few inches off BCL so I'm probably not the best person to answer but I know what you mean about tangly ends. My hair always riots when I try to bun it. I usually oil the length a little and then I comb knots out while I'm bunning. It's the only way I can get a bun to look even remotely smooth :p

Nique, your hair looks great! Yay for more growth!
I learned today that a high ponytail then braided gets really heavy. I am not a pony person but loved the lazy wrap ponytail idea. I braided my damp hair so I would have waves by the evening. I felt off balance frequently throughout the day as my braid would move from side to side especially if movement required bending. I wish I could say I did not have that issue once it was loose, but I forgot to take the braid out for waves when I went out. Phooey. Oh well. I will have to try it again.
The cool thing is that my high pony is at BSL which is where I was at this time last year. After seeing that, my hair was actually feeling long! I am sure the feeling will go away, but with half the normal growth this month, it's the small things that make me happy!

I have not had any big, significant trims, and I got to this thread 13 months ago. I'm not yet at BCL. It will be another 18-24 months until I reach TBL. I think I will probably make BCL by this fall, if I don't trim very much off.

Hi Kendrix, I am doing the same thing. Currently I am at 32 inches and going to trim if I can wait, 1 inch in June. Same as you are planning on doing with trimmingone inch. I am also going into unchartered territory with being at hip length now and hope to achieve classic in about two plus years. From what I have read from extreme length ladies at classic and beyond, they do trim about an inch every six months so I think this helps the hemline stay healthy and not frizzy or frayed. After all, we still want our hemline to look healthy so I think the one inch trim every 6 months is the way to maintain the overall health of our hemlines. These 1 inch ends are at least 6 years old that we are trimming, so I think they have served their duty! ;)

I have the same problem with a high braided ponytail ;( It just feels heavy and swings around and I am 57 so I just feel stupid with this braided ponytail swinging all over the place. Plus it gives me a headache especially if my hair is wet or damp. Guess a low braided ponytail is better for us so it doesn't feel so heavy. Best to just wrap that braided low ponytail into a lwb. That looks very pretty too imo!

Glad you liked the video DreamSheep! I know! Mine isn't quite long enough to stay in the link bun unless I really crank it tightly, and then, well, it's too tight! LOL And you are having trouble even with bcl length! Well, in 6 more inches I think it will be easier. At least I am hoping so! :)

I totally agree LarrissaLuna! Especially since for me I needed to trim 1 1/2 inches in November due to fried ends, and I think I will be needing to trim off another inch in May. ;( Oh well, at least we can still say our hair is long!! ;):magic:

@longcurlytress and rushli: I actually have a solution for this. I have been messing with the LW pony a lot. Using it to build other styles. And I came up with a braided, looped, LW ponytail because I don't like the weight of the braid whipping everywhere and the fray of it as it rubs on my back. With a regular LW ponytail, I am nervous about damage to my ends from it rubbing on my back much in the same vein as braid fray. I think this style will work with shorter length and holds with just a stick like the LW ponytail does. (Forgive the frizziness. This was after working for 5ish hours)

Nique, your hair looks great! I love the bangs, wish I could pull off the blunt bang look myself.
Thanks! It's not straight, which is why it works so well I think. I pull the front of my hair from ear to ear into an elastic just above the bridge my nose and cut that way. It makes face-framing chin length bits on the sides and a smooth crescent curve up around. The best parts of blunt and side-swept, for me at least. I find my face very long, so updos and braids without a full fringe look very harsh on me.
The more I look at that latest length pic, the more I wonder if I should make a run for bcl this year. I'm gonna be dealing with braid shred and bun explosions but I'd have that anyway, and I'm craving the length now as my hair thickens up at the top. My cinnabuns are already getting fewer twists (one and a quarter instead of almost two) and I can always chop back up later, but the length looks thick enough that I could get away with just S&D for a while, and the front layers are long enough that it's an option. If I just trim from the bottom every 4-6 months like I used to, I'll still be rid of the layers eventually. I wish I could make up my mind!

Yes. I did the braided lazy wrap loop using these steps:
1. Gather hair in ponytail and secure temporarily in elastic.
2. Part the ponytail into two, one small section and one large(the kind of part you would use for a regular lazy wrap) and braid both. You can secure the ends or not. I dont.
3. Pull out the hair tie, but do hold onto the ponytail.
4. Fold the larger braid up first and wrap around the whole hair in the direction you will wrap the LW part and hold the ends down with the hand that will hold the loop for the lazy wrap.
5. take the smaller braid and LW as usual, over the first wrap. Secure with stick.
It seems complicated, but it only took me 5 minutes. Not even.

i am reporting my hair trim today. I am not sure how much i trimmed, more than 0,5 but a little less than an inch? Excluding racer hairs. Also my hair grew almost 2,5 inches since December. I am happy with my trim, my ends look more even already and feel much better :o downside is i am not brushing bcl anymore now but i am willing to sacrifice length to get rid of layers and thicken up hem this year. Next trim will be around June/July.
Happy growing everyone

Thanks for the welcome! And hi to my fellow newbie-waisters and threadsters! :D
Winter Fox, thank you! And yup, indeed that's my natural colour(s)--tis be all but jet black in there, I think! Lately I've been shedding a bit (post op and stress), and have been losing a few of my rare dark brown hairs, which are also so fine (my finest) I can hardly see them. Waaaah! So I guess that means the whites will be getting more of a show! Hopefully I can get a current pic to update my siggy soon, too!
Rushli, things have been pretty hectic for me, so I've been MIA for a fair few weeks. I've lurked when I can (not often at all, which has been HARD!!!), and I've missed being active on here so much! :grouphug: We've just had a big ol' cyclone (hurricane that rotates in the opposite direction due to being in the southern hemisphere) barrel past, so that's added to things a bit! Yay for summer in the tropics? :p
browneyedsusan, I'm your age this year, so feel very similarly to you! This is the longest my hair has ever been, and I'm loving it! The longer the better. I'm looking forward to draping it in cascading waves over my shoulder down to my legs. It will be heavy (is now), but "fun". <insert childish grin here>
Does anyone else have hair that loves to wrestle with their bra strap? I guess skirt bands, jeans and undies are next?

Yes! In fact I just threw out a bra that has this extra metal hook-thing half way up on one of the straps that you were supposed to be able to hook to the other strap to make it a cross-back bra. like ---> X

Haha!! No, I need to post more!! ;) Thanks LLL!!!Myhemline is desperately needing a one inch trim, but my 6 months are not until mid May, in 3 more months!! I keep brushing out my hair and seeing it with rough tangly ends and very rough looking, but I am just going to clarify, oil them up with EVOOO and bun them until I can say goodbye to them. This is what many with extreme length are suggesting how I handle it instead of just taking a scissors to the hemline right away. Yes! It grew an inch in Dec and another inch in Jan. Not sure why? But I am feeling this is just a happy time of year for my hair with good growth? Usually I am happy to get 1/2 inch a month growth, so this is very strange, but I hope it continues. Also, I am shedding less so who knows what the heck is going on?? Wish I knew so I could continue doing it! Anyways, your hair is gorgeous!! Not to worry! ;)

Can I join?
---This is very hard to wrap my head around. So surreal. My hasn't been past collarbone since I was 8. Just saying it out loud.... ---
I'm hoping to figure out what tail-bone-length is, and how to deal with the challenges of longer hair than I ever imagined. :)
Long hair is a fantastic gift for myself. Especially at my age, and here in the Midwest.
Hey Browneyedsusan, you are the same age as me too. I have a birthday in March though so will be older then! I have watched your progress since I joined and you have had terrific growth, that's brilliant!
Age is relative, I don't care what people say anymore about older women and long hair. In the last couple of weeks I have seen a few ladies with longer locks and they have looked fabulous!
I want to be a rapunzel nanny when my children decide to have their own families, I might have to wait a while though, there are no signs of that happening yet! Gives me time to keep growing anyway.
Welcome to all the newbies, this is the best thread of all, there are some really supportive people here and there is a good community spirit with a lot of fun and good humour too.

Yes! In fact I just threw out a bra that has this extra metal hook-thing half way up on one of the straps that you were supposed to be able to hook to the other strap to make it a cross-back bra. like ---> X
My hair was wrapping around that #$^!* hook  and getting ripped out. Finally I had enough of that.
Crystawni! You're here! YAY
Welcome to muadhnait, mermaid lullaby, and browneyedsusan too :beercheer: Everyone's hair is looking excellent :hollie:
*tacklehugs the schnibster* (yeppers, that's another nickname to add to the list...) Hi! Wow, I'm actually in a length thread with so many people I look up to! Admittedly, I still feel like my hair is too short to be in such company! I suppose my last length pic was in December, so a new one (at the end of the month with any luck) will help me comprehend my length a bit better.
And yup, I'm not surprised you got rid of the hook from hell. I have some bras with the same config., but they don't have the extra hook (just longer, removable/interchangeable straps), but I can imagine my hair will just love playing within the X part of it. Sports bras are the devil, too, just for the trap-factor.
As for older women with longer hair, I get a kick out of seeing the mature ladies of yesteryear (aka Downton Abbey :p) with their coiffed styles. It just reminds me of how recent the old/short "tradition" is, and encourages me to embrace the longer stuff at whatever age. With people like Christie Brinkley, who's 61, rocking her locks, I think the days of turning 40 and getting the chop are behind us. Hopefully. Oh, and I like the idea of a Rapunzel Nanny, but my poor grandkids have to put up with me rocking out on bass and drums, as well as my ever-growing hair. Mwahaha*cough* *splutter*hahahaha! Mayhaps not quite the fairytale?

Hi Ambrielle!! My hair is alot curlier than yours is --3b. If I didn't stretch out my length when I am checking for growth, my curls would eat up all my progress and that would not be a fair consistent assessment. Besides, it would also be extremely inaccurate and discouraging since my hair shrinkage varies depending on humidity, my hairstyle, whether is was in a bun or not.. all varying factors. So the easiest most consistent way to measure curly hair is to stretch it out. Your hair is wavy, so not sure if you can relate but it is how we curly girls measure our hair growth progress;):blossom: So, now you know. :cheer: Just out of curiosity, when you do stretch out your length, how much closer are you to tbl?

Here we measure stretched as well. Only relative to milestones though (this much to go to TBL, to classic, etc.), wouldn't know my total length - at all. Wavy and curly hair "hangs" differently every time, so the only sure way is to measure stretched.

I understand LongCurlyTress. :)
I don't know what it is but i don't feel comfortable claiming milestones unstretched.:hmm: I do think it might have something to do with the possibility of feeling disappointed were i to compare the claimed length (stretched) to what it actually looks like on a daily basis if that makes sense? But yes, i have measured both ways. :) My shrinkage is around 2-3 inches. Before the trim my longest layers were brushing bcl stretched and 2,5 inches or so away from tailbone (bear in mind i don't have a straight bulky hemline because of the layers). I am probably 3 inches away now but i have a feeling it will take a whiiiiiile to get there because i will be trimming fairly often this year and i am 5'10'' argh. I am just not happy with my hemline and layers so there is no point for me in being miserable about it and grow out without any trims.
Shrinkage sucks big time but our gorgeous curls and waves make up for it, don't they?!:cheer:

I know you guys SAID I was already but I finally FEEL like my hair is at waist now since the very til of my hair touches my waist when it's braided now! I definitely think I'll be able to reach at least BCL this year, maybe more, depending on how lucky I can get.

Yesterday was wash hair day, and I let my hair down just before jumbing in the shower. My hair was kinda wavy/curly and messy becouse of some braided updos that occured In the week and I palm measured and It seemed like I still had at least 5 inches to reach BCL. And then I wet my hair and magic happened o_o I have only 2 inches to fully reach BCL so I think I'm gonna make it to tailbone this year, since my tailbone it's 2 inches after the bcl.

My hair is thin/fine but poofy, so I enjoy actually feeling the weight of it in the shower. I spend way too long in there just swinging my hair back and forth or leaning my head back to pretend it's longer than it is. Ha!

That's great! It's always nice to find that your hair is longer than you thought it was! I seem to be at the same stage as you. I've got 2 more inches to go before BCL, then another 2 inches to TBL. Fingers crossed we both make it to TBL by the end of the year!

I turned to the kitchen sink at the beginning of the year. Its done wonders for keeping my damage under control. It can't go anywhere so doesn't get tangled as easily like that. Plus i can just wash the oils off my head and leave the ends alone apart from conditioner/oil :D It also dries faster somehow it seems. Tubs would be hard-iii hair needs water pressure to get through all of that! ;)

We will definetly achieve that! If our hair grows 6 inches per year as most of the people hair do then we will actually gain an inch (if not two) plus!

I've been looking at my hair at various stages in the post-wash cycle and, provided I don't need to have shred-free braids or every-hair-in-place buns, I think I am going to start growing length again instead of maintaining to trim out layers. The three inches I've taken off the bottom this winter have made me like the look of my hair a lot more. If my new shampoo helps with the damage I've been seeing lately (thread-covered elastics did more damage to my hair than several months of bleach and dye, go figure) then I should be all set to grow, grow, grow. I can definitely get past bcl this year, even if I need to trim a little more off the bottom.

Sorry about the terrible quality of this photo, i don't take selfies often and i can't work out digital cameras very well (i am used to DSLR cameras).
Nonetheless i took this photo a while back this month to check on my length and progress. This is about half of my hair after a trim (a little less than an inch) and with oiled ends. Despite the ends being heavily oiled you can still see how much thinner they are compared to the bulk due to the layers, i am not happy about that at all. :(
On a happier note my friend confirmed today that i am less than two inches away from BCL unstretched (plus my hair is at its wurliest today), i was surprised, obviously i suck at measuring. That means i am very likely already there stretched!:happydance: I won't claim it until i make it there unstretched.
Oh and forgive my stained pants with paint, they are my artist's indoors pants! :D

Yes it is just touching BCL unstretched/wet or the longest layers are anyway, i trimmed a little less than an inch last month but my hair seems to be growing the average 0.7 per month so i am not too worried about trimming until the hemline catches up with the thickness of the bulk. I will be there (unstretched) in May/June but since i will be trimming a little again in June or July i am not sure if it will put me back or not. I am still hopeful i can make it to tailbone in December-January. :)
You will be there soon yourself, how much is it for you between waist and BCL?

Now that I'm passing waist it's starting to fairytale, I think. I know part of that is old layering, but it seems to be thinning also. I wouldn't mind if I wore my hair curly; it looks great that way. But I wear it brushed out wavy and it looks thin and damaged that way, which doesn't speak well for long hair. I don't mind my curls, but I like them at a shorter length. For long hair I prefer waves. I think I should watch it as it grows, and see if it's really fairytaling or if it's layers that need to be trimmed off.

They weren't kidding when they said waist to tailbone is an abyss. It's been 8 months since I've reached hip and I'm quite a ways from BCL. I did get a < 2 inch trim at the end of July. So I've had about a 2-2.5 inch net growth. That's so small! This is exactly why I'm not trimming.

It has been ages since I took a length shot, and Wildcat Diva's lovely picture inspired me to actually attempt to fix my waves! Here is a picture I snapped a few minutes ago - forgive the poor lighting, it is rainy and overcast with very little natural light coming through the window. Had to use the flash.
http://i993.photobucket.com/albums/af57/squiggyg/IMG_0185_zpsfan2msgc.png
My thumb is on my iliac crest, so I suppose I can call this hip? While wavy! I challenged myself to wear my hair up for all of February and I have been very diligent about NOT checking the length - last I had check I was only at hip when I had brushed out all the waves! The bottom of my shirt is somewhere near tailbone, so I still have a ways to go if I decided to grow that far.
Speaking of, I know this isn't a real hair typing picture, since I had actually tried to enhance the waves, but what would you call this? I think I have lost some wave as it has gotten longer. Just curious what you all think.

I'd definitely still call it 1c/2a, maybe even full 2a in that picture. Lots of lovely defined loose S-shaped waves.

I've finally been able to snap a pic of my mop at waist. As you can see, my ends seem a little scared of the length and are trying their hardest to head back to shoulder... :p

WD, I LOVE the look of your hair! I'm hanging for mine to start fairytaling--last trim was in April '14.
Super nice! Congrats on reaching waist. :)

That looks like full 2a to me, BTW. Very nice, and I would agree that's hip.

Wow! Lovely hair Squiggy! I'd call those waves a 2a and i'd agree you're at hip.

Thank you FallingDarkness and likewise, your hair is glorious! :blossom:
Yes it is just touching BCL unstretched/wet or the longest layers are anyway, i trimmed a little less than an inch last month but my hair seems to be growing the average 0.7 per month so i am not too worried about trimming until the hemline catches up with the thickness of the bulk. I will be there (unstretched) in May/June but since i will be trimming a little again in June or July i am not sure if it will put me back or not. I am still hopeful i can make it to tailbone in December-January. :)
You will be there soon yourself, how much is it for you between waist and BCL?
Waist on me is 29.5 in, and BCL is right at 35, so it's FOREVER AWAY :(

Thanks, Nique, Lapushka, and Ambrielle!
So 1c/2a? Sounds good to me. When my hair was above APL it was definitely wavier, but I'm just glad it has retained some wave as it grew! And Yay for hip! That means I have officially grown back all the hair I chopped off that one time when I was really bored with my hair back in, oh, 2009. Hooray! Now to grow it longer than I've ever had it before!

I am excited for you, it must feel great! :happydance:
My waves do the same thing as my hair gets longer. When i hit waist + some of them turned into 2b waves but i hennaed my whole head the other day and out of nowhere i got my 2c waves back, very odd considering many wavies who henna report the opposite effect. I personally would be happier with 1c/2a myself though... oh well. :)

Woohoo! It's really fun having longest-it's-ever-been hair, every inch feels like a milestone. My hair was long when I was 5 years old, but I don't count that because I have no idea how long (probably only hip-ish anyway) and I was so young and tiny. So, I've been counting longest-ever since I hit BSL since that's where I was before my pixie, and that was the longest it had ever been at that point. So exciting! Especially since hip is pretty much the line between conventionally long and LHC long. :joy:

Aww :grouphug: If your hair grows the average 0,5 a month that's about 10 months i suppose? But you might get a growth spurt this year, you never know. :)
I think i have about the same distance between waist and BCL but waist on me is at 33 or so.
You truly have a gorgeous mane FallingDarkness, just be a little patient with your hair, it will grow. :flower:

I tried to braid my hair last night and it was so slippery that my french braid came almost completely undone in my sleep. I told my mom how I apparently over-conditioned and she said, "Yeah that's why I don't do that anymore!"
And now I know why she does what she does with her hair. o.o

Crystawni your hair is so gorgeous. It looks so soft! (your ends look great, BTW) :kitten:
Squiggy beautiful hair and it looks definitely hip to me. Your waves look amazing. My wave-pattern was always very weak and once I hit hip it was gone. Sacrifices we make for length, I guess.

I'm in awe of the prettiness on this thread- waist to tailbone is such a aesthetically pleasing ride. I'm not all that far from TB at the moment, but I'm leaving it as long as I can to call it so the slog to classic is shorter. I know its all in my head, but it just makes me happier *shrugs*

Yes, Nique and Ambrielle, it is very exciting to be in new territory! But of course, as is true for anyone who has been growing their hair - it still doesn't feel that long!
Thanks, schnibbles and Wildcat Diva! Back when I used to have 1a hair I always wanted something in the 2b-2c range. Now that I have some waves I really enjoy them on the rare occasion that I don't just brush them out. Of course, I still wish they were just that little bit stronger...

Wow, Squiggy, your hair is gorgeous! I'm agreeing with 2a for your wave, too. :D My own waves have stuck around so far with length, but my hair is baby-fine which tends to make the waves less noticeable. It's like they're crimped moreso than bumpy, if that makes sense.
We've had some really hot weather here lately, and hubs and I were lucky enough to cool off in a pool. I thought I'd check out the mermaidness (is soooo a word) of my hair in water, so left it down. Um, yeah. Great idea. Single strands of death snaked through the water, found my neck and proceeded to make themselves into a "pretty" necklace. Pretty tight, that is. Strangle-hair, I haz it? And it's actually tricky to "unglue" the single, wet strands from hot, wet skin. I don't know how mermaids do it! Next time, up she goes. I guess I'm officially a longhair now?

Yeah, I MIGHT make it to BCL without any trims by Christmas this year, but I'm not all too hopeful. . .
If you don't mind me asking, how tall are you? It's so funny to see the correlation between height and WL on people. :) So BCL would be around 38 on you. . . ?
That was very sweet of you to say, and I think that your hair is absolutely stunning. <3

Thanks! I usually brush my waves out, because who needs to fix them when they're just going up in a bun? Also, I cannot wait for pool weather! We have had an unusually cold winter here and I am so ready for the heat of summer. Heck, at this point I'll just take anything that stays above freezing for more than a week!

Hi! I think that I am going to hop onto this thread. I've said that my hair is waist length for a while but based on the pictures and charts I have seen here I think that it is actually hip length, as the ends are right at the top of my hip bones. This is practically the longest it has ever been (apart from a haircut a month ago, but since I have not been measuring my hair before I can not really tell the difference). It is so strange how much more attention I have paid to my hair after joining this forum.

I need to chime in here. What is BCL? I don't see it on the stickied list of official LHC abbreviations. Below Classic Length? Sounds good to me!

It's butt crack length. Or bum cleavage length if you want to be more polite.
