Nice pic Lauralonglocks! I've given up on hair pics in general since I feel like it's repetitive for me. Good for you though, sure wish I had the same enthusiasm as you do for self hair pics.
My enthusiasm is waning a bit. I think I'm going to switch to quarterly hair length photos next year. Every month photos makes it hard to see progress.
I have been measuring my hair by pulling it straight, otherwise I never know where it will be with my waves. I had all my body markers measured out so I could tell when I reached the marker and estimate how long until I reach the next one. Well, the other night I had my hair in a low pony. I put my hands on my waist with my fingers pointed to the middle of my back and my hair kept brushing it. At first I dismissed it because my hair was in a ponytail, then I got excited when I realized a pony would make it shorter, not longer. (2am mommy brain, what can I say) I check with DH in the morning and sure enough, it was at waist! I thought I was 1" away stretched! However, when I took the picture today, it shows just above waist again. It was humid, but my hair was in a bun all day, so I did not expect any shrinkage. The top of the black line is waist. It is hard to see since I have too many rolls, but I am working on it. Lol
I have not been active this summer, so since I am jumping back in, I thought i might as well start off in the WL to TBL even if I might not quite look like it in my latest pic. Btw, LLL, I think this is the third time I have shared this photo today. Yah for photo spamming! Haha
http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e20/rushli/2abcf2ebd8c9ac6aa7a4beb30cc3378e_zpsbda8cf58.jpg My hair is 1c, and I still pull it straight to measure. I think that's the way to do it. I can't see your photo.
LLL -- I know you worry a bit about your hemline, but in your photos it always looks great. Such pretty hair! Thank you. It's mainly a bit of braid taper caused by face frame and the splitting of the hemline layer that concerns me. It's not the worst I've seen, by any means. I'm just a perfectionist, I guess.
I know it seems like hair takes forever to grow sometimes. I was just looking at some old pictures in my imageshack, and two years ago my hair was so SHORT! Last year was also impossibly short. So it's amazing to see progress from a year ago for sure. No trims in the past year and a half almost, so it's 100 percent of my growth (barring any breakage). I like having pictures to track growth, too. If I wasn't taking photos of my bangs I wouldn't think they were growing at all. It's fun to look back at pics from years ago.
Dear fellow waist to tailboners, :)
I think I'm always going to be in this topic! :D
I hit the tailbone in the beginning of the summer and then I got the urge to cut since my hair started to get caught everywhere, and I like to wear it down too much! What I also missed was the nice bouncing feeling that I have at waist, and that I later don't feel anymore.
Anyway, I decided to be patient and to go at least to classic once in my lifetime after I was 9 years old. Of course I didn't get there, but I went solidly past tailbone, but... Today I gave up and cut three inches back. Honestly, I was more scissor-happy than that, but I managed to control myself - it's always easier to cut more later than to regret instantly.
What is funny is that I think that this - between waist and tailbone - might be my ideal length. I'll be still trying to push myself further, to longer lengths, but I have to admit that I like my hair at these lengths best.
What is even more funny, when I cut I thought it was at waist again and I was preparing to write on "waist to hip" topic, but then I made a photo and discovered it's still past waist! Anyway, it's my perception that is changed now, it feels short somehow!
Here's the photo (please excuse the bad resolution and my mirror.... I could clean it before taking the photo, ouch!): here my hair is brushed and I possibly tilted my had back just a little, so I guess it's going to look a bit shorter than this, but anyway, somehow I'm happy that it's shorter now, but also pleased that it is still past waist for sure!

Wow you guys have such beautiful hair! :crush:
Hi all, can I join in? I've been working towards tailbone but it seems like I'll never get there. My ends are in a very sorry state and I keep having the urge to reach for the scissors, even though I just did like a month ago.
I made a few changes to my current routine (eg. going back to cones, cutting back on the oiling, etc), so here's to hoping my ends are saved long enough for me to lay off the scissors until I reach my goal!

I have about 4" to go before I touch TBL. And yes, one side is longer than the other coz I'm still a noob at cutting my own hair.

How long are you going without trims? I am on 10 months of no trimming. I have layers so it hides uneven growth decently well. I want to go 1.5 years (total) before trimming but have contemplated going 2.5 years which would bring me to TBL
What is funny is that I think that this - between waist and tailbone - might be my ideal length. I'll be still trying to push myself further, to longer lengths, but I have to admit that I like my hair at these lengths best.
I have thought about going to 48", which is a bit past classic for me, just to say I once had hair 4 feet long, but I think my optimum length will be somewhere between waist and TBL too.
milque - lovely hair. Great color!
LLL- fixed the link. Wouldn't you know that when deleting my accidental duplicate upload, I deleted the one that I posted multiple times yesterday, haha. Good to know someone else measured stretched too!

@Rushli: I want to get to about 32" before I trim, so maybe another half year. Then I will take off one inch. Well my barber will. She's great. I just found hemline pix after she trimmed me up last year April 2013. I will show pix later on if you like on my hemline then and now.

Crumpet, LauraLongLocks, queenovnight, thank you so much! It's another day and I'm still happy with my hair! :o
Milque, your hair looks great, you can relax a bit and let it grow, it will look awesome! For me too it seems to take forever between waist and tailbone, but hip and tailbone are pretty much close.
Rushli, that's also why I still have the thought of going to classic. I somehow want to see it on myself! On the other hand, I don't feel that comfortable with lengths much longer than hip. I'll try to work on my updo skills, maybe that will help. For now, I am where I am. :D
Caraid, it's a beautiful color! It is so close to tailbone! You will be there soon!

Such lovely hair, Nymphea! I agree with others that being happy with your hair is so much more important than how long it is, and your hair is still ultra long. Now I wanna see it in all it's wavy glory, cuz I'm greedy like that. ;)
Hiiii, Caraid! :waving: Your hair is looking long and gorgeous, and you're getting so close to TBL! (the last 2 inches before a marker/milestone are the hardest, aren't they?)

Ok, here it is, veryhairyfairy:
http://i57.tinypic.com/15n5fdh.jpg
The resolution is still bad, unfortunately - my boyfriend took our camera with him to the trip, so I'm left only with the mobile phone camera.
Anyway, here my hair is still damp, but I couldn't wait.
I'm still happy with the new length. It doesn't catch into my chair while I'm sitting, it doesn't touch the floor of my bathtub while I'm washing it, it generally feels much lighter and healthier, it doesn't tangle (ok, this is not about the length but about the damage)...
Anyway, I'm going to stick with all of you in this thread for now. I'll now let my hair grow for some time and then try to go just an inch shorter than this. So I'll try to find the length that keeps me most comfortable at the moment - possibly it is somewhere between waist and hip - and try to concentrate on the overall health of my ends. That would be an interesting journey for the next couple of months or more. :)

Ok folks, I am calling it this week as it is the end of 50th year on this planet for me and I am privileged to even be here in this thread instead of on hairloss threads or forums. I am thrilled with whatever hair I have got and whatever comes after this is bonus. The thin ends at the bottom are a reminder of where I would have been and am in no rush to chop it off. Thanks for looking. I may hang out here for a while until I feel ready to graduate completely, but I want to remember this week 50 years from now (ha ha).

I am now past waist but the last 12 inches are thin and probably should be cut but it isn't going to happen. I had health issues that caused hair loss and I am very fortunate that it is coming back at my age. I last trimmed I think in February, and I don't plan another trim until next February. I am pretty happy with my length now.

I gained an inch since I measured last (I can't remember but I think it was sometime around the 4th of July) so I'm at 33" now. I estimate tailbone on me is about 37" or so.
I might stay at tailbone for awhile and also do something with my hemline when I get there... :hmm:

Wonderful hair, Beborani!
I'm at TBL now, I guess! My hair doesn't look it, but when the flippiness is smoothed out of the ends, the middle section of my U-hem is right at the end of my tailbone. Without the smoothing, it normally looks about an inch and a half shorter, just above BCL.
I was going to attempt self-trimming in order to maintain at TBL until my layers were gone, but I've realized that I don't have any hair scissors (no money to get any either), so I'm not sure what will happen.

Gorgeous, Beborani. Today's my 35th birthday and I hacked an inch off my hemline after finding splits at the red lights while driving. I just did this 4-5 days ago. Funny thing, my hair is still at waist, no matter how scissor happy I get. I don't get it, I've done this like 4 times in the past 5 weeks, you'd think I'd have BSL hair by now but it is still solid waist. I will NEVER get out of this thread, that's clear. not until all bleach damage is gone,I guess. Man, splits just kill my mood when I find them, I have to hack.
In better news, did a gelatin protein hair treatment yesterday after overnight coconut oiling and man my hair is slippy and glossy and shiny like never before.

a gelatin protein treatment? im intrigued. ...was it a home recipe, or something you bought? and, was it sticky!?
(i ask because, ehrm... i tried a honey and oil treatment for the first time the other night, before my last wash. even as i was attempting to work it through my hair, i just kept thinking, oh god, this was a HUGE mistake! because, even though it was warm, it was still *so* sticky that i was worried i'd never get it all out of my hair. i had visions of having to cut it all out!)

My recipe is from sciencey hair blog, half cup boiling water with a TBsp gelatin, tsp honey and acv. Work into freshly washed (clarified) hair and work it in. I rinsed after five minutes, hair felt brittle so a few palmfuls of conditioner and rinsed really well, I don't think I even sealed with oil. My hair feels so slippery and is blindingly shiny. Blows henna and cassia and smts out of the water, for me. I'm doing these once a month, but every two weeks could be even better, let's see....

Just putting it on and rinsing it out after a few min isn't so strong but drying it hard with a hair dryer is. You choose the simple routine or the ultra! I found it did plenty without the drama of the hair dryer but I pre-pooed with coconut oil 24hr, clarified, then did gelatin goo followed by two min of gobs of conditioner. Result was hair the way I imagine Asian beauties glossy, beautiful black hair must feel, like slippery sheets of glass-like tresses, just cascading around every time I move my hair. I can't stop touching it!!!!

Moisture? I guess just an SMT is plenty, with your favorite conditioner. Heat cap or sauna or warm saran wrap&hat on top of it while it sinks in for half an hour helps it to penetrate a lot.
I really thought I was fine on protein, too, based on the stretch test. But turns out I really benefited from protein!!!

Very nice hemline! Your waist to hip must be very similar to mine. Waist is just a teeny bit above hip, like 1.5-2 inches. I had someone comment that my right hand looked like it was on my waist, not my hip, in this picture. I'm quite certain you and I both know where our iliac crest is. ;)

So I bought some Knox gelatin and tried out a protein treatment, I can't say that it was super great, but it wasn't bad either.
What I did:
1 teaspoon of knox in cold water to dissolve then added1/2 cup hot water, dribble of ACV, and about a tablespoon of honey.
Left in wet just shampooed hair for only a few minutes, rinsed and slapped on conditioner mixed with a bit of honey for moisture, rinsed again.
So my hair wasn't the dry, tangly mess I was worried it might be, in fact it was nice and shiny and fairly easy to comb through... but it also made my wanna-be waves go crazy and become a frizzy monster!
I think I'll give it a month and do another one with a few adjustments (like not combing my hair out after I shower... see if the waves wanna play nice).

I think I might've been overdoing the S&D ever since getting to waist. I can see growth, but it's so uneven. I hope the rest of my hair catches up or I fear a trim will be necessary.

It is so difficult to estimate. I optimistically thought tailbone would happen in something like 10 months after I hit waist, but I've come to realise I need to revise my estimate. My hair was growing at faster than the half-inch per month rate, but that must've been some sort of growth spurt. Also, the longer it gets, the more splits I seem to find...
I think a year (at least) sounds more reasonable for me as well.

Welcome, welcome! :waving: It took me exactly a year at 1/2" a month (no trims) to go from hip to TBL, if that's any indication... but we all know that everyone is proportioned differently and has different growth rates.

I hear you on the split ends! The longer my hair gets the more they've been popping up :( inevitable I suppose, same with the taper that I seem to have going on at the moment. My hair growth seems to have slowed, too. Sigh. One year might even be wishful thinking in that case. Better not give it too much thought though, right? Might do more harm than good. Patience!

So many splits popping up lately! Maybe I need to get more serious about that microtrimming and just trim all my growth every month for a while until I can clean up my bottom 1.5" - 2" of hair.
leilani
September 14th, 2014, 11:07 AM
I have to say I agree, LLL. I just can't permit my hemline to be full of splits, so even if that's all my growth, I gots to hack when I see my ends riddled. I would like to grow longer but I like long layers and the shape they give, but that means my hemline needs to be trimmed agressively (if there's any splits/deteriorating quality at all) blunt to not be see through. I can't deal with a wispy, see through hemline on myself.

I have a bit less than 1,5 inches to go until I reach TBL, which I hope to reach around Christmas. That will conclude my year of no trims. Then I'm going to sit at the maintaining thread for a long time until I'm happy with my hair. Also, at this point my hair is barely just starting to feel properly long, mainly because if I sit or lay in a weird position I always manage to sit or step (yes, it's possible) on my hair or so if I have it down.
I'm actually glad to be able to start trimming again soon as my ends are getting (more) see through and I've been dreaming of some of you people's thick hemlines for ages! Also my virgin hair is growing along well and I cant wait to get rid of the previously dyed ends sooner than later. :)

I created a classic by Christmas 2015 thread yesterday. My initial plan was to go no-trimming for a year, reach TBL in that year (by Christmas 2014), then snip a bit off. Maybe maintain TBL for a while. But now I'm not going to do that, and go straight for another year of no trimming, hoping that I'll get close to classic the next year.
Anyone else with me?

September 15th, 2014, 02:33 PM
I don't know if I should or if I shouldn't :/ I have made it to TBL stretched, but still not wavy. I am trying to convince myself that it would be good to have a trim in October 2015, then see how I feel about maintaining. So if I did that I guess I would have to make it to classic by October. Not sure if that is really do-able or not. Maybe stretched just about?

At this rate, I might make classic by 2020... ha. It is slow going and I wish I had more to report in about. Nothing hair-related has been going on recently, although I have been fighting a terrible summer shed. Hairballs in the bottom of the shower, handfuls just coming out, etc. Yeah. It's tough but I'm hanging in there at waist.
EDIT:
Question, how do you separate hip vs. waist? I guess it's supposed to be your iliac crest but it seems like that starts a mere inch or two below my waist... I'll stand in front of the mirror for so long trying to find my hips that I just give up after a while. I know there was a picture here earlier of someone with waist-almost-hip hair and that got me wondering.

I called hip when my hair reached the swell of my hips, so just below my iliac crests and about the height my jeans sit (not high or low waisted but average). It's about 2/3 inches below hips and 2/3 inches above BCL/ TBL, I seem to have a short lower torso

I've always thought hip is where my iliac crest is, guess I'm mistaken. Waist to me is right about where the narrowest part of my torso is, maybe slightly lower.
heartgoesboom, you're so close! Hang in there!
On a sadder note, I caved in and trimmed off the unevenness of my hemline. Set me back about 0.5" or so but at least the offending lopsidedness is gone. And my ends feel better. One step forward, two steps back. Sigh.

I measure hip by the top of the iliac crest, not where it swells out. So, yes, it is just a mere inch or two below waist for some of us (me included).

I feel like I'm struggling again to keep the ends nice. May have to maintain at hip for a while but I want to grow on to TBL so much. Going to leave trims to the minimum and do lots of oiling and keep my hair up all the time. I've been lax and had it down more than I should recently. Maybe when the bleach damage is gone I'll be able to wear it down without despairing over it so much! I keep meaning to do a picture but there's not enough growth to make an impact.

That's the reason I won't chop to a shorter length and be done with the grow-out of my face frame. I am afraid I wouldn't be able to do all my updos.

I did another chop, about 4 inches this time. I was at hip (my hair grows SO fast--nearly an inch a month) and am now back to waist again. The good news is that I think I am finally rid of the evil dyed/fried ~4 year old ends! Seriously, my ends feels amazing, and they're bouncy! I haven't had ends like this in years. They don't stick straight up when I hold them up. I'm ecstatic.
Basically, no more chopping from now on! I'll still need to trim, but I won't need to cut over 1 inch anymore. I can just grow right on to TBL. Feels good, man.

I'm not exactly sure what's up with my hair lately.. My circumference hasn't changed but it doesn't feel as thick. It feels very sleek, bunning very easily. Basically, it's acting very well-behaved, so I'm confused. I know I have heat damage from years and years of blow-drying. Can damage make your hair "feel" thicker? I wonder if some of my damage is starting to repair, is that possible?
My shedding seems normal/unchanged.

I have a few fingerwidths to go until TBL (if I go by feel). Am only having pics taken at Christmas, though, when I'm sure to hit full TBL, and then some. :D

Think I'm gonna join this thread. :) I'm at hip level now, and I haven't done a full on trim for three years. Think I'll trim a few inches when I get to TB. I should really wear more protective styles though. :/

My sister said one day "your hair is so long already!" and I was all warm and fuzzy inside. I just told her that I'd had this revelation about hair-cutting, that if you don't cut your hair it will grow longer, and she was like "wow, so obvious". ;) Then I measured my hair and it's already hip-length! Yay! I have sort of long hipbones though, they come to about an inch from my waist, so no big achievement there, but it's nice to feel a bit closer to long hair. It's especially nice because I have been trimming a bit over the summer and I think the ends might be in a marginally better shape now than they were last winter. The last cut was end of August, about an inch, and after that I think I won't be trimming anything the whole winter.

Just wanted to drop by and say "hi" to you girls, new and old ones :flower:
I'm a bit assent because my study exchange is keeping me busy, and my little appartament doesn't have a full figure mirror, so no lenght shots. Currently is hip, and it's enjoying really much the local water, that is quite soft.

Thanks, everyone!
My hair feels this way when it's been a few days after my wash. If I go too long without washing and it's fairly coated in sebum, I swear I go to just under 4" thickness.
If you've changed anything, apparently your hair likes it.

Hmm .. thanks! That's reassuring. I have started hitting the coconut oil kinda hard pre-poo. :alcoholic: :hmm: Maybe that's it.

Just noticed today that the longest of my scrimpiest fairytale ends is touching the top of my tailbone. I'm not calling it tailbone.... I go by the bulk and whack the ends off every year, so I'm still calling this hip length, mostly. Especially because this is pre-cut, so it won't last for long at all. But yay for milestones!
Here are two pictures - one from after the last cut in August 2013 and one from today for progress. :D
(These are going to be big... I will snip them if I can figure out how.)

Thanks, fairy!
I know I'm just going to hack it back off to barely-past-waist length (because I like thick ends - and I cannot lie) but it's nice to be in a forum where someone can understand my excitement over it anyway. :D It's really pleasing to see how much length I added in a year either way.
I measured it at 31", and considering it was under an inch in 2010, I get to know that I'm averaging like 3/4" each month (on the fastest growing section, at least) so I must be doing something right! lol
Color-wise, Caraid has me beat by a mile. I'm just a plain ol' blonette.... and adding more grey all the time. :/

The difference between hip & TBL is 6 inches for me, so yes about a year's worth of growth (with no trims).

I'm going to try Sciencey's gelatin protein treatment too! I'm going to wait until Friday though since that's when I usually do treatments and wash my hair for the weekend :) I'm excited to see how it turns out! I've never done any real protein treatments unless leaving a protein-containing conditioner on for a deep conditioning treatment counts but the concentration of proteins was probably too low to really do much  Did anyone else besides VeryHairFairy try a gelatin treatment recently?

I'm so *so* excited for this Christmas, and for my length pics, because I'm *this* close to TBL. I can scream with excitement. And I've committed to another year of no-trimming. I will make it to TBL this year due to no-trimming more than a year, so I'm going to go on with this no-trimming thing the next year and see if I can make it to classic length. Never thought that I'd find so much enjoyment in growing to longer lengths, but I (somehow) do. I remember when I was on here and couldn't get past BSL (coloring excessively, kept having it cut back and such).

Thanks everyone! I wish I didn't have hair dysmorphia!
I see only ugly rust orange brown colored hair that is maybe bsl in back and apl in front, the entire hairline fallen out again doing hugely unattractive things to my face, the bangs now not really flattering but I have no choice about them since it's the 4" regrowth hair from the last great pp shed seven months ago so I might as well shape them into bangs, and hide bald hairline....and my ponytail circumference is now half what it should be and my braid is pathetic.
In reality I suppose it is thick, shiny, hip length in back, waist in front and a nice brown in artificial light and a pretty auburn in daylight. Oh and still over 4" ponytail circumference and thickness people still comment on despite any shedding.
Am I the only one suffering from hair dysmorphia?

So last night I did an overnight oil pre-wash with EVOO on the length, then this afternoon I microtrimmed since it's a waxing moon and then shampooed with Suave Naturals. I followed the shampoo with the gelatin protein treatment since I wanted to try it on squeaky clean hair (and I usually CO-wash). I left that on for 10-20 mins followed by a deep conditioning treatment for 15-30 mins and now my hair is air-drying :) I haven't touched it so maybe when my bf gets here I'll take a proper hair-typing photo since I've never bothered with that before... Does anyone else prefer to do hair treatments and wash right before/at the start of the weekend?

So after i chopped to bra strap in may i kinda left this thread for s bit because i was sad over the cut.. But i am back here now.. And no layers now.. And nice thick blunt ends now... S i wont chop again now..
I expect it will take me just about two years to reach tb where the actuall tip of the tailbone is... Which is close to classic.. But again.. Short person.. When i sit down there is slightly less than 12 inches to touch the seat.
In the meantime... Here i am.. I shall enjoy lurking here.

The ends are due to micro triming 1/ 4 th of my monthly length gain. The purpose was because i like them blunt and i hate snd.. That i decided it was in my hairs best interest to make sure 80% of all my hairs end at the same time.. Somi can trim them all at the same time.nwithout looking for splits.
Well my hair grows slower because of that since as soon as i notice some hairs getting left behind i maintain for 1 month ( however long it takes) and grow again when they are all in the same starting line..
Better way to explain, i am just slowing down my hair growth to howhever fast my slowest hairs grow in order to maintain my happy thick blunt hemline. According to my measuring tape, with this method i grow the standard .5 inch a month.. According to my roots from manic panic, my actuall growth is .75 or more inch a month.
Anyways... Thank you very much for the compliments, i am working hard for those ends, so getting complimented on them feels very nice. :o

Welcome, Marbid, ARG, and miss_asimov!
I really like your practice of trimming so that you grow slowly, Marbid, and it definitely shows. :) I might pick up that practice when I've grown out enough of the damage to actually start growing again.
Speaking of trimming; I did my first ever self trim yesterday and as far as I know, it looks fine! :cheese: I did the middle part-ponytail under chin method and cut about an inch. The last inch was of such paltry thickness that I had no compunctions at all, so yay! :)
No difference in how it looks or feels, but I feel good that I'm finally taking steps to rid myself of damage.

I think my hair is solidly at tailbone, however I'm maintaining here until my layers finish growing out (the shortest layer is around waist). I'm trimming quarterly and doing the usual S&D. I'm so glad I learned how to self-trim so I don't have to bother my friend who went to school for hair for every minuscule inch. :)

I put mine up in a turbie twist right away, then dry off my body and get dressed. If it is down while I am trying to get dried off and dressed, I just keep getting wet again. Self-trimming is so liberating, isn't it? I wanted to wait to make it to TBL before I started microtrimming, but I am really enjoying the improvement of my hem and getting rid of my face frame. So maybe when I reach TBL I won't even need to maintain, but can just keep growing.

I feel like the distance between hip and tb is like super long. Some day... and of course I've trimmed like twice this year. I dunno this is like the first time I've stopped obsessing over my hair since it was above shoulder. Maybe because it feels pretty dang long now?
Ahh! I feel exactly like this :D I think our hair measures more or less the same too - it feels like it should be such a small distance and yet it is miles at the same time :p

Maybe it's because I reshaped my hemline a couple days ago and everything needs a week or two to grow out.

Measured my hair, and I'm probably in need for a trim - because I know I have grown and chopped off lots of ends... so overall I haven't really grown this month (about .2 of an inch, with the exception of one hair, which is at 35'' - I was at 34'' a month ago, but didn't look too precisely). :( Tailbone feels so far away... And I also would like to get my layers to catch up and get a more U-shaped hemline. Anyway, I'll stop complaining..

I think, even though it says Crazy Goat Scream, it's a sheep. It looks like a sheep that was recently shorn, not a goat, unless it is some mixed breed goat that has a Nubian face and ears that are somewhat erect like Oberhasli, Alpine, or Saanen. Though the MAAAA scream is quite funny still. Most goats have a ma, ah, ah, ah sound whereas a sheep has a more solid, unbroken by syllables maaaaa or baaaa. In any case, she seems to be a very unhappy mama animal, probably just separated from her baby, or moved to a new pen, to make that kind of noise.
Heck yes, though, so many of us are in the MAAAAA phase! I love how we just coined a new term. ;)

I like where my hair is at now and would like to grow it out a bit longer, maybe back to TBL, more for curiosity's sake. The last time I went to TBL (about 10 years ago), it got sooo heavy and it took forever to wash and dry. At the time, I had a newborn, which I stayed home with full-time. My free time was very limited and it almost seemed selfish to need so much time caring for my hair so I ended up cutting it to shoulder.
This time around, I am thinking of getting my next trim in the Spring to redo the layers, but I am also flirting with just having it shaped into a U, instead. When that time comes, it would be a full year since my last trim. Right now, I have a love hate relationship with my layers. I like them because they allow me to wear my hair down most of the time something I wasn't able to do before. Wearing it up all them time made me feel matronly, and I did not really enjoy styling my hair this way all the time to avoid tangles, damage, etc. However, now it's a real pain to do any updo's because the layers keep jumping out of any and every single bun. The layers thin out the thickness and allow for my hair to not be as weighty. I haven't had real issues with headaches because of the weight as I did before. To me, having the layers also looks more stylish and the length of my hair is more palpable in the workplace. I guess I am more pro-layer than not, but I am still on the fence either way. I'd like to hear your experiences and opinions :)

No headaches, no long drying times, and looking stylish and professional with your hair down even at work instead of being a slave to constant updos? Plus how freaking gorgeous it looks on your shiny, amazing hair? No Brainer! Keep them, and if you do a compact cut for diy layers, you can also begin updos bent at the waist dangling your hair down and then with your hair pulled to the same spot you use to cut layers, so that your hair is all one length, then proceed with the updo. I do buns like this, first I start with my hair in a ponytail held just with my hand in the spot on top of my head where the ends will align, then I twist and wrap. I don't even need a toy, I can twist and wrap and tuck the end into the center and it stays put very well at my length, but not if it were a few inches shorter so it's a big motivator not to cut Above waist for me, so I never have to hunt for a scrunchie/elastic/clawclip/hair you.

Dweamgoil, looking great, first of all! Second, I have always been a fan of layers in thick wavy hair; it's such a princessy look and just looks wonderful! Having had layers and painstakingly grown them out, I think it really depends on how you like and plan on wearing your hair. If you really prefer having it loose, then I say layers will make you happier. And vice verse with buns and braids.
(You can still find ways to keep layered hair bunned up and kind of sleek looking with nice claw clips to hold any escaping layers.)

Looks more like hip to me! I have layers, cut with one of the compact cut methods (ponytail on forehead). My shortest layer is BSL and my longest aaalmost TBL. Before it was APL/Hip, it was that when it was cut, I think.

I think your hair is absolutely stunning, Dweamgoil, and I personally love how the layers accentuate your wave pattern. It looks hip length to me...?
(I only wish I could get waves like those, but mine a wimpy at best even when I try hard) You said above that wearing your hair up all the time has made you feel matronly in the past... this is a valid concern. It's important to enjoy your hair and how it makes you feel.

I agree; gorgeous hair, DweamGoil!! Very inspiring :flower: I'm in the same boat as you. And I'm leaning towards getting rid of the layers and embracing a u hemline. But the layers seem to help the waves. Very important with a texture that tends to be inconsistent. It all makes for a very indecisive wavy :p. I'm waiting to get to my final destination before I make my final decision.

Thanks, everyone. I think that waiting to see how it feels and looks once I get to around TBLish is a good plan. I am more leaning on keeping the layers for all the reasons I previously mentioned as well as some of the ones you brought up. As far as where my hemline falls, well, you know us wavies; waist today, then tomorrow hip and the a little humidity in the air and it's back to waist again :)
Believe it or not, henndigo has subdued my wave pattern substantially. This is my natural wave pattern on entirely virgin uniform length hair:

Your hair is so shiny it's gorgeous! I'm currently at BCL but I am growing to Classic just for curiosity's sake. I've been contemplating getting layers added to help with my wave pattern but I may wait until I reach classic to decide. The layers you have now look nice but I understand your dilemma over to layer or not to layer. :) if you like wearing your hair down more than up than I'd say go for it.

DweamGoiL - I actually prefer the layers in your hair. If you like them, then keep them.
Rapunzel15, it only took you FIVE months to grow from hip to TBL??? You roots must be fueled by jet fuel!!! Ha ha! Wow. It's going to be at least 18 months from hip to TBL for me. I reached hip in May this year, I think. So, I'm thinking Christmas 2015 I should be at TBL. Of course, I am trimming now, so it might be even slower.

Some random calculations regarding my past growth/future growth: :ponder:
I joined here at BSL in November of last year, so I've been at LHC for 11 months and my hair has grown 8 inches. (so basically, BSL to hip in 11 months, with monthly microtrims) I have estimated I have approx 4.5 inches until I get to solid tailbone. Which according to my patterns over the past 11 months, if they stay consistent, should possibly put me at tailbone in March or April 2015. :hmm: (6 months from now) I think my hair grows at a pretty average speed .5 to .75 an inch/month.
My bang layer, however, doesn't grow that fast. :sad

Wow, DweamGoiL, your hair is awesome!! :crush: I really like the layers on you, and I'd go with how you prefer to wear it. If you prefer down, I'd keep the layers! See, I really can't relate as if I wore my hair down much at all - it would break off like crazy (even before the meds). Somewhere past BSL it starts having to stay up to keep it looking ok and to keep my sanity. Luckily I AM a matron, (and getting ready to be a grandmother soon) so I don't care :p

Another sympathy post for the slow-growers and micro-trimmers out there! I'll be in the MAA for a good long time while growing out my layers and reducing taper. Its amazing how much thicker my post LHC hair is!
Also, sympathy for the other wavies! I'm at can-I call-this-hip in the shower and sometimes when my hair is dry, it feels like MB. Oy.
Dreamgoil makes me love layers again!!! I actually love layers even on my own hair because it can accentuate my waves, but my current layers were really poorly done so even if I get layers again, I have to grow out this bad cut.

:scissors: "your hair has energetic moments throughout the day and takes breaks at other times. According to the Saint Xavier biology class preparation, your hair takes a cue from the rest of your body during the night and rests, slowing down its growth. It gets a energy boost in the late morning, from 10 to 11, as well as the late afternoon, from 4 to 6." :scissors: Source here (http://www.modernmom.com/2d1d3712-051f-11e2-9d62-404062497d7e.html)

Selkie you do have gorgeous hair!
I trimmed a half inch today on a sudden urge. I did my dusting two days ago and I decided I just hated my last inch of length and I had to do something more substantial. A week ago I was satisfied with my ends but this week I needed to hack. I'm apparently staying at waist forever. Sigh. Well, I'm more concerned with having thicker /more hair than having simply length, and the amount of hair I had in the last half inch would have fit in a thimble so i really didn't lose almost any mass of my mane, just thickened up my hemline....

This is really what I would call the climax or the turning point thread in this entire forum. We come in here with waist length hair, a length that is respectably long, but not super-length yet. We graduate with TBL hair, the shortest of the super-lengths (in my opinion). This is the place where we grow from long hair wannabes to real longhairs. Some of us might take more time here than others. We might trim back to get a thicker, healthier hem. Or we might breeze right through this thread with a fast growth rate and awesome ends. In any case, this is the happening place on the LHC. This is where all the real action is. So pull up a chair, grab some popcorn, and enjoy the journey.
Anyone want to have a TBL party when we get there? I'll bring the protein shakes. :)

Sympathies for all of the slow growers out there, of which I am one... In January I was at 27 inches, so I've gained a little less than 4 inches since then, and I doubt I will gain more than an inch before Christmas.
I feel doomed to forever haunt the valley between MBL and hip! shudder:

totally agree! Thanks for accepting me.

I feel doomed to forever haunt the valley between MBL and hip! shudder: I'm growing at about the same rate or a little slower. I was 29.5" in January and now I am 32" but I have been trimming some. It's okay. I don't mind making slow progress now that I realize that is just me. AND I don't shed much at all... averaged it out for two months and I only shed about 26 hairs a day. So there is hope for me making it to super lengths!

You're lucky. I'm a regular shedmonster compared to you.

Well, it makes up for my growth rate not being super fast like Tini's. There is always something good you can praise about your hair.

I miss being pregnant and not shedding (less than 5 on wash day!) and growing 3/4" a month. My postpartum shed only lost me 1/8" too! I though it would be much more. Of course my sacrifice was 3 months of non stop migraines because of darn hormones. I think I will stick with average growth and normal shedding and be relatively migraine free!

My shed rate was counted and averaged for two months, when I wasn't pregnant. It hasn't changed since becoming pregnant. It never does. This is baby #12. My hair does not grow faster or shed less when pregnant, but I don't get a postpartum shed, either. I'm waiting to see if menopause has any change on these things. I've got over 12 years to go on that I suppose, right? Age 50-ish? I'm less than two months until my 38th birthday. My mom had a hysterectomy at age 42 so I can't really ask her about her history and there aren't any other aunts or grandmas around that I can ask, so I have to go on the general average age at menopause, which I thought was around age 50.
Oh what a relief menopause will be... no more periods, no more pregnancies. Just me, my body, and all the rest of my life! Maybe that doesn't sound very nice. After having double digits of pregnancies, births, and breastfeeding all of them, I long for the day I can have my body back to myself. I don't want to share it forever. Ahhh, menopause, you glorious time!!!

I just had baby number three and we struggled with breastfeeding until just a few days ago. My supply had been dwindling for awhile, and I was finally ready to let go. (I have had a lot of support and info, just biologically I don't make enough. We went through months of crabbiness and weightless, but now everyone is happy) I know BFing is not such a chore for everyone, but I can not imagine giving that much of myself for so long! We have talked about 2 more to bring us up to 5 but now that I am able to relax a little and am seeing my oldest (4) starting to be more independent, in makes me feel content with my boys. The small section of the baby's closet with girl clothes just waiting to be used in it begs to differ thou.
I could go for no more periods, but not too thrilled with the other things that come along with it.
Btw, your hair in your sig looks so lovely! It is hard to imagine it is just over 2 inches/5.5cm longer than mine. It looks so much longer! It must just be my layers.

I'll double the Belgian chocolate. At least we don't have to think about adding more chocolate (we can always use more, though).
