So I keep searching for a routine with natural products that makes my scalp happy...
But man I agree that fresh ends are addicting. I have crazy sharp shears and I love to use them. But still I want to get past waist, where I have been all year!!!

LLL -- I sympathize! It sounds like you'll be ready to simply grow once that last layer is gone. That's really encouraging! Whatever you decide about trimming, you can tell yourself that you'll put the scissors away once you trim, say 0.5 in into that last layer to clean it up. Then you can just go for length!

I'm celebrating a bit right now because it seems as though I am SO close to reaching tailbone... Thoughts? Am I correct?! My hair is uneven but it seems the sides grow faster than the middle. I'm letting it grow past tailbone before I even it out... If I have the patience and self-control to do so. ;)

Yes, that's exactly right. Just need to clean up the bottom 1.5-2" hair and I'll be golden!
Trimmed two days ago, but somehow my ends now feel worse :steam. That's not fair! (joking here) you should glue those ends back on and see if it feels better again. But seriously, that rots. Sorry. I wonder what is making them feel worse... change in products, routine, needs more deep conditioning?

Sending strength to you LLL through those last bits of growth you need to be done with your layers! You'll be growing super-fast after that!
Gorgeous hair Meleil! For some reason, I'm bad at spotting the body-markers, but I'm great at spotting gorgeous hair. It looks fantastic, whatever length it is!

Just found this self measuring trick out recently. Sit on a hard chair and pull your hair down with one hand and the other hand take a ruler and measure your ends to the chair seat. This gives a pretty accurate measurement as to how from from tbl we are. I am 5 inches, so hopefully in 10 months??? Hoping!!! :joy:
But your hair really does look like you are already at tbl! Very pretty! If you measure from the chair seat, please let us know what you find out! Thanks!

I'm becoming discouraged. Many of my hairs are split. I've never dyed or bleached my hair and I flat iron once every 2 months, probably less. I really love long hair but I don't know if I can deal with all these "rules". I love wearing my hair down and occasionally using heat on it. And I think I'm ready to change my color. I may want to even get some layers put in.
I'm going to the salon in a few days. I haven't been since this time last year for about 4 inches cut. While I'm not going to cut my hair short, I'm going to change the color and cut. I'm pretty excited!

Whenever I want to make a big change to my hair, I have to wait two weeks. This usually gets me through the feelings and then I don't do anything but continue with my long term goals of classic or beyond. I have created major regrets with layering, and bangs so I have learned this "two week rule" lesson the hard way. Good luck!

Welcome to all the new Waist-and-beyond-ers! :)
Just checking in again. I've been very length-obsessed this past month, but I'm trying to make myself wait to measure again until August 1st. Just a few more days to go! I need a microtrim, but I don't want to go any shorter than 34 1/2". I want so badly to get to 36", because then I will have THREE FEET of hair (at least according to the LHC measuring technique), and I will only be 3" away from Tailbone. Sigh. I can be patient...
Happy growing!

Thank you Sarahlabryrinth! And my parents won't stop me from doing anything with my hair, but in order for there to be peace in the house, I don't like to "defy" them too much. My mother really does not like my hair this long but I'm definitely not cutting it. I am a little easy to push around though. I need to change that about myself.
LongCurlyTress: I love the two week rule! My issue is that I'm visiting family in Europe in a few days as well and for 3 weeks! Well, I could get my hair done there... It's hard for me to see an end point for my hair because I really don't know how long my hair will grow and whether I'd even like it that long. This makes sense in my head lol but I'd hate to be super dogmatic about my hair. I still have 4 days to think about going to the salon and what I may do.
You all are so supportive on here! I love it. :group hug: I think I'm driving my poor friends crazy talking about my hair.

You are welcome! Maybe just enjoy your family visiting in Europe and worry about your hair when you get home? Your hair looks really thick and beautiful in your profile pic! Many of us have been exactly where you are. If you want to cut it, it is your choice, but it will be a decision that will last for months or years, but it will grow back! Sometimes indecisiveness is actually a negative decision when you really don't want to do something, but are feeling pressured to do so. No matter what, it is your hair which is a part of your body and you should decide what you want to do with it. Good luck! :blossom:

Thank you for the encouraging words, LauraLongLocks, Crumpet, LongCurlyTress, and Lapushka! You guys make me feel even more excited about getting to tailbone length. :crush:
LongCurlyTress, I did the 'chair measurement' and it seems as though my hair has 4 inches to go until it hits the chair/my bumbum. That makes me extremely happy... I think my growth rate is a bit faster than normal, don't know why that is, but my hair has grown extremely fast these past few months. I'll keep updating in order to see how long it'll take for me to get past those 4 inches. Woooohoooooo, excited over here!!!
Edited: I juuuust found a picture from a month ago while digging through my image folders... Please excuse my towel cape. I actually did a little trim right after this picture was taken and it seemed to have evened out my hair enough, but I really don't think I'll be doing that again for a while. It also seems that my hair in this photo is still the same length as it is now (maybe a liiiiittle bit longer). I'm really curious as to how fast my hair is actually growing. I'll be documenting the progress...

its been a month since my June trim and my growth has 'slowed' progress thanks to said bad decision. -.-
I'm .5 inch away from My Official Hip Measure of 35" and I'm becoming impatient. I don't want pictures again until I'm there. The landmarks will speed up soon, so this mid-back-abyss cannot last forever, right? :D
Just noticed: I'll be at Hip by my Birthday

Great progress meliel!
So I have decided that I am only going to trim my hair this Saturday. My hair dresser isn't scissor happy so I know she'll take off what is damaged and leave the rest. I think my problem is that I need to trim my hair 4 times a year rather than once a year. I was doing an S&D session and I had too many splits to get rid of by S&D.
Another issue is that I don't wear my hair up all the time and occasionally use heat on it. My hair is not very strong (neither are my nails) so I don't think it can handle heat and daily "evils".
I have to accept that if I want long hair, I will need to wear it up, not use heat on it, not change it's color, and trim it frequently. Yes, this makes me sad but the other options are shorter hair or damaged long hair. I am not happy with these options either.
:wail:
Edit: A one inch trim four times a year equals only 2 inches of net hair growth per year. :(

Checking in again. My scalp didn't want to wait for my wash, so I washed and measured today instead. I was juuuust past 34.75", very nearly 35". My ends were really thin from a major S&D I did mid-month, so I trimmed to exactly 34.5". So I'm hoping to be able to trim back to only 35" at the end of August, rather than 34.75". But we'll see.
Slowly, slowly...
Happy growing!

I think it's gotten longer again. When I joined a few weeks ago it was elbow length, or so I thought, but now it goes like 5cm past my elbows. I doubt it grew that much in a few weeks though. The trouble is that when I move my head to look how far it is, I bend my head down and then it goes lower. But it could have been past my elbows without my noticing when I first joined maybe.

Thought I would post some pics here from my progress, or lack of.
This is my hair before I cut it back to waist (again) in February. I had the rest of the sun-in cut out and you can see the demarcation line in this pic:
http://i393.photobucket.com/albums/pp17/Poetry4me75/DSC02827a_zps95591a58.jpg (http://s393.photobucket.com/user/Poetry4me75/media/DSC02827a_zps95591a58.jpg.html)
This is just after the cut, all virgin hair at last!:
http://i393.photobucket.com/albums/pp17/Poetry4me75/DSC02829a_zps326fb20b.jpg (http://s393.photobucket.com/user/Poetry4me75/media/DSC02829a_zps326fb20b.jpg.html)
And this is 6 months later (current):
http://i393.photobucket.com/albums/pp17/Poetry4me75/DSC03014a_zps19c464bc.jpg (http://s393.photobucket.com/user/Poetry4me75/media/DSC03014a_zps19c464bc.jpg.html)
I am very happy with the color and quality of my all virgin hair. It is thicker and seems "happy".
My next goal is hip, possibly by year's end if my growth would stay at 1/2" a month (been getting 1/4" a month for almost a year now).
I will probably go on to TBL (end of 2015- 40th birthday goal) and then maintain between hip and TBL until the layers are cut out.
I did not like dealing with my hair past TBL before, so I am not sure if I will grow longer than that but I do want to experience knee length, if I can stand it. TBL to knee is a 3 year minimum commitment. That's a long time to deal with annoying hair!

Beautiful hair everyone! I've been away for a month or so and I'm now just catching up. I'm about three inches from tailbone I think, but I'll try the chair method and get a better idea. (I'm about .5" from BCL)
I've had a really stressful two months and I went thru a few weeks of heavy shedding. I can still feel my thickness moving down my length but I'm starting to see a new crop of babies. I'll try to post another length photo soon.

Nuvola -- I agree with the 'glossy' comments. Incredible shine!
I've been feeling a bit down about my own hair the past few days. I'm growing weary of the no-growth, slowly trimming out layers pattern. I think its because I've been wearing braids, and the shredding in them is terrible...and terrible for about 4 inches or so. It doesn't look great. I keep pondering taking off more than all of my growth each month, but I'm not sure that I really want hair any shorter than it is now. Grump.

Sorry to hear that, Crumpet. That's not a fun place to be :-/ Maybe changing up the tension of your braids both at the scalp and throughout the braid length can help camouflage the look of the shed until you figure out what you want to do :-( I know some styles and people will gently tug on the "elbows" of each woven part of braids to loosen them and give them the appearance of bigger braids. Perhaps something like that might make it look less terrible and help you feel less down about it.

Switch to buns so you don't see the shred so easily. Ever since reading Emi's blog posthttp://longhairedatheart.blogspot.com/2010/03/even-hemline-without-loosing-length.html about microtrimming over doing a big chop, I'm a microtrimming believer. Maybe if you are getting impatient about the long microtrimming process, take two months' growth every other month, and in between just take one month's growth so that the process is faster, but you won't be in as much shock from losing too much all at once. So one month you take a month's growth, and the next month you take two months' growth. You will be getting shorter, but it won't happen as fast. Hope it goes by quicker for you.

Laura, do you actually still S&D when you microtrim? :)

Laura, do you actually still S&D when you microtrim? :)
I aim to microtrim and S&D once a month, each. If I relied only on the microtrimming I would never get some of the splits that are in my last hemline layer and face-frame. But like I said in the other thread, I limit it to about 15 minutes a session, and have decided that natural light causes me to trim a lot more hairs than if I am in artificial light when I S&D. With my hair, if I see a pigment change (usually several shades lighter) right at the ends, it is usually because it is a split, but it is stuck together, if that makes any sense. In sunlight I see hundreds of these, but in artificial light I only see a few. So to preserve as many hairs as I can, artificial light keeps me from unnecessary trimming.

Thank you very much for your answer! Keeping 15 min sessions might work for me too. I might try this ;)

I feel like my hair is SO short ....maybe because the ends are kinda thin compared to my hair BSL and shorter. I love the shape and movement of layers, I really do, but maybe I really want weight to my hair BSL and longer. I solved this with the bendy foam rollers a couple nights ago and got those heatless curls and felt a little bit better about the ends, as they are less pitiful looking when curled up. And it still looks long (solid waist, right?) even when curled up....right? At least it does in pics. Not so much in mirror.

Your hair looks lovely, really! And I know what you mean. I'm probably about 32" as well and I still feel like my hair is short. Kind of depressing. Though, in others eyes it looks extremely long. I try to ignore my length for a while.

It will be tailbone soon stretched(bottom of shirt)--a couple of months away and then what? Graduate or stick around. I guess I will start to peek in the next length thread as my hair will always be at multiple lengths on different days/time.

I found a good way to measure how long it is from hip to tailbone is wearing shorts.. Its a good four inches from hip to bcl and tailbone is only another inch so a good five inches :( but, I think I must get a good inch a month or thereabouts as I went from waist to hip in two months. If I don't trim I might just be there by the end of the year then, I'll probably trim 1/2 every four months.

My hair today, I'm liking how nice the compact cut layers blend when it's clean and fluffy. They look kinda scraggly and pathetic on the ends when not as clean and fluffy. But oh my, when I do waves or curls, the compact cut layers are phenomenal and I adore them and the volume and movement I get. Why isn't my hair naturally wavy or curly???

I love heatless curls, I can do the bendy foam rollers sprouting from the top of my head from a ponytail (like pineappling but the ends get wrapped around the bendy rods) and get gorgeous curls. The compact cut really makes it easy to wrap them round the rods since they are all the same length when up on top of my head. It looks great. However, I just can't be bothered to do that every time I wash, and they don't last all day.
I'm plopping right now and trying LOC to see if any wave comes out after totally dry....

Alright girls, what is this? I was dry from all the colour oopsing and millions of clarifying washes so I coconut oiled for six hours, used diluted clarifying shampoo again to get the bulk of the coconut oil out, then I used my awesome cone free conditioner from the ends down and after a couple minutes, piled on some cheap conditioner (a couple palms full) which is also cone free all over to add a little moisture everywhere (since coloroopsing and rinsing and all that is so drying, everywhere) and to remove the last of the coconut oil if there was any. Then after rinsing with warm then cold water, thoroughly, I used a ton of an oil mix (there's avocado, jojoba, argan, coconut, sesame, emu, you name it) when my hair was dangling upside down, scrunching up from the ends to focus most of the oil there, and lightly coating the rest. Then I plopped in a microfiber towel for 45 minutes, then a shirt for another 45 minutes, then let air dry for 2.5 hours. It's still slightly damp, but almost totally dry. 4 hours!! so annoying.

I guess I'm back to this thread, I just did a big trim, from almost FT to TB, yep a good 6 inches, but I'm glad I did it, my ends were sooooo thin and uneven due to breakage and a few accidents....it looks really good now and I'm hoping this next year of growing will result in a healthier looking classic or hopefully FT length, I want to add too that because of all the things I learned here on LHC the bulk of my thickness has grown from waist to TB!! So even though I had to cut I still see great improvements
So to those of you that feel you'll never get there, it may take some time but you will! Don't give up :)

I'm still trying to figure out the perfect routine too. So far the things that really garner impressive results every time are:
Washing with eggs -super clean and conditioned without alkalinity!
Rinsing with dark ale or spritzing it in and leaving it -volume and shine
SMTs to hydrate
Redken diamond oil conditioner, most amazing conditioner ever, no cones, and a tiny bit works in to saturate my entire head of damp hair which is impressive
Eliah Sahil shampoo naturale for super mild S&C (its a powder blend of Indian herbs you mix with water that cleanses and conditions and promotes scalp health)
Washing every 2-3 days, not every single day!
Still on the fence about/haven't tried systematically enough to know for sure:
Gelatin protein treatments
Co-washing
Oils, leave-in conditioners, or butters in any form
Does not work out:
Stretching washes more than 3 days (itchy scalp)
Cassia (did nothing)
Washing with bentonite clay, rye flour, honey, or anything else from kitchen
Acv rinses (nothing)
What about you guys?

I'm not that adventurous anymore, that's for sure. Regular shampoo and conditioner will do for me. I adhere to these methods: WCC + LOC. They work well for me. My days of experimenting are long over. :)

I'm getting tired of experimenting as well. It looks like CWC works best, and using my keratin detangler spray on damp hair makes it soft and gives it waves.

I was done experimenting too, had a really good routine going - and they reformulated my conditioner! I know that doesn't seem like too big of a deal, but I have severe asthma which limits me to unscented/lightly scented products (or ones that for some reason just don't trigger it  ), and allergies to a LOT of ingredients, including synthetic fragrances. So I really can't just go to the drugstore and pick up something!
I'm considering washing more often and going back to my old products that worked pretty well (Redken) or else giving shampoo bars another go (they didn't do well first time due to hard water. I'd have to get a good vinegar rinse ratio figured out). WHY can't they leave products alone for longer than a few months?!! Grrr. So I guess more experimenting is in my future (and I HATE it; I liked my old routine of wash and go!).

Oh gosh, I know exactly what you mean! I still have asthma really bad, but it got better a lot. Scented products, especially minty ones, gave me attacks.
And yes, changing formulas... Never got that. Hope it won't happen to me soon. Hope you find something else that works! :blossom:

I'm trying to figure out which conditioner I like best, but basically, I have two categories with conditioners. Either I absolutely hate them, or they are fine. I really liked Lapushka's recommendation of Herbal Essences Hello Hydration. That worked well for me, but so did Dove and so did Nexxus Humectress, and many others. Can't decide which one I like best.

I don't know how much HE Hello Hydration costs in the US, but here it's about 3 euro per bottle. I got mine at a discount store for about half the price, which was a sweet deal! So I stocked up. :D :D :D

I usually stick to things that work and am resistant to change--somehow I chose Co-washing even though I was happy with my shampoo but once I made the switch I never looked back but I like exactly one conditioner for my scalp and will not be happy it is discontinued. I never shampoo to clarify or anything like that. I do have my tradtional Indian washing stuff that I can switch around with occasionally and they worked for me for 16 years without ever shampooing, so I am good in that department. I dont have patience for deep treatments and such but I started hennaing to cover the few greys and am loving the overall effect enough to stick with it. For some reason cassia leaf tea soaks on end of hair (I have not read about it so it was based on pure hypothesis) that I started on a whim are a big hit for third/fourth day hair--makes it silky. So despite my initial assertion that I dont like change I seemed to have added a few things to my routine that makes longer/older hair feel nicer and washing a pleasure.
I forgot to add--charmeuse silk sleeping cap--almost the best thing I did for my hair. Well, looks like I have changed quite a few things and probably will continue to do so in the future.

I got to thinking about doing deep treatments and so now I'm wearing a henna/cassia gloss on my head. I am glad to use henna/cassia all over about twice a year, and do some touch-ups on my henna ombre up to 4 times a year, but I am glad it blends into my natural color so well. I don't feel like a slave to it, so when I do it, it's still fun. I do love what henna does to strengthen and thicken my hair. I feel that it is protective.
Doing deep conditioning treatments has proven to be a difficult thing to find the time to do! I usually end up doing it about once a month, but I really would like to do it once a week. I thought I would slather my hair in a deep condition treatment and cover it with plastic and go on a 3 mile run with it once a week, but in the heat, I don't want to wear plastic over the top of my head when I am running. I don't think it's safe because I might overheat. I think it's a great strategy when it begins getting cooler this fall, though.
I have tried a few conditioners for my deep conditioning and so far, I really, really like the SMT the best. Every conditioner I have tried is better made into an SMT than it is alone. Hmmm, maybe I should use the SMT everyday...?

Hi guys, I just trimmed back to solid hip from tailbone over the last week and I've totally forgotten how I used to keep my buns stable at this length  I have long compact cut layers this time around though - the shortest layer is around waist, and then the "face framing" (for wont of a better word) bits are around MBL plus it's way silkier and slipperier now than it was at this length last time. What are everyones favourites at this length? I can still do a nautilus but it falls out really quickly so I've been experimenting with spin pins to help. I'm really loving this length, it's so easy to wear down and the layers keep it nice and bouncy so I think I'll be keeping it like this for a good long while. I'm not a fan of braidwaves so I don't want to do braided buns if that helps narrow some styles down.

Sometimes I really want to do a bigger chop like you did and just be done with the splitting layer above my hemline, but I'm holding out, trimming 5 mm a month probably until next summer. I will have little growth to show for the next year, and I REALLY wanted to be at TBL next summer, but I will have to accept that my last layer isn't going to make it that long. It just really needs trimmed and cleaned up. The microtrims are a satisfying way to improve my hem gradually, but it is sad to see my length progress slowed. Either way, it is going to take the same number of months to reach my next length goal with the hemline I want, whether I trim as I go or whack it off and grow. While growing out I want to have the nicest, thickest hem possible, rather than waiting until I get to a certain length before improving hemline. It takes so much patience. :)
Your little one is 5 years old? Perfectly fun age, especially little boys. I wish I had my would-be-five-year-old still here with me. Soak it up and enjoy every frustrating moment of having your hair scissors demoted to paper cutting scissors. ;)

I'm so sorry, lauralonglocks, I can't imagine surviving losing a child.
Mine are 11,9&10 months and I'm blessed to not yet have dealt with any losses/miscarriages. It's my biggest fear though!
I bought clippers and have been learning to trim my eldest's hair short short. My younger son only let's me trim bangs, his hair is super shaggy, almost a jaw length bob! Not sure he has a plan...
My daughter has dreads forming where the back of her head rubs the carseat, despite daily combings and washing. I even slathered her I'm grapeseed oil to combat cradle cap and hours later, dread puffs! I'll have to tackle that with olive oil, a shampoo, and then some seriously slippy conditioner, followed by a bit of oil.
Still not enough to take my attention off my own head! I trimmed a layer of wispy bangs from the long, thick side bangs I'm growing out from lady spring's blunt thick bangs. I was so excited my hairline regrowth after my postpartum shed was long enough to be involved in a wispy bangs project, so bangs I now have. They're not so wispy they are see through but they are half of the thickness the hairdresser gave me in April. I hate how far back they start on my head, so I'm growing out half and now have eyebrow skimming bangs that don't go back more than one inch from my hairline, which I'm thrilled with in comparison.
Helps me to keep the scissors off my own hemline, the playing with bangs. I was in the sauna today and did an SMT there, and this was after a prepoo olive oiling. My hair feels so slippy and silky and amazing!!! It wasn't even conditioner I like, or decent quality olive oil. Something worked though! Yippee for divine feeling hair :-)!!!!

Thank you for your condolences, Leilani. I don't know if I'll ever get used to it.
I hear you on the dreads forming from the carseat, though most of my babies have been so bald there wasn't as much opportunity for that to happen. Could you line the carseat with a piece of satin?

Beautiful hair wildcat!
No not enough hair for pigtails, it's pretty short. I do a barette to keep her long bangs out of her eyes. funny the back of her head has totally different quality hair than the rest, it's cotton candy compared to fine silky blonde hair everywhere else. My middle child had the same phenomenon. It took years before the hair on the back of his head (like a silver dollar sized patch) was normal hair and not cotton candy hair.
Satin idea is good, I have fabric and love to sew!
I can't wait for these postpartum shed regrowth tufts to grow long enough to stay in an updo as well as become bangs.they poke up like horns now. Ahh well I like wearing it down a lot anyways.
I feel the urge to s&d after I saw some splits earlier...But man it's tedious on iii hair....

My discovery of the year: HYDROLYZED KERATIN! My hair loves loves loves it! Especially the conditioner and leave-in spray from Andrélon! My routine is really simple.
I wash my hair twice a week using the CWC method. The first C is a moisturizing conditioner I got left (really need to use up my stash ), then I use a regular shampoo (again, really need to use up the ones I still have), and the last C is the Andrélon keratin conditioner. I use A LOT of it and let it soak in for 5-10 minutes.
When rinsed out, I leave it in a turbie towel for 10-15 minutes. When I get it out, I use the keratine leave-in spray. Then I let it air dry. When it's 90% dry I use the keratin leave-in spray once again. Result: really soft, shiny, thick and moisturized hair that isn't weighted down by too much products!

That sounds good!!
I'm settled into a routine now with just the stuff that works for me, but most are not treatments you can do more than weekly without overdoing it or getting sick of doing it. So I plugged the following into my calendar with reminders so my phone can worry about remembering and I don't have to think about it:
Weekly SMT at the beginning of each weekend, this is also a CO wash, post exercise
Weekly (on tue/wed) overnight coconut scalp/hair oiling
Mid week oil removal wash alternates between:
Twice a month egg wash, lightly seal moisture with redken shatterproof shine oil
Twice a month clarifying 'poo, protein after*
Monday post exercise wash with Indian herbs, same oil after
*every other Wednesday protein treatments alternate between a monthly dark ale rinse (I use half a can and pour the other half into a mister bottle to use as hairspray, with a few dropspeppermint and lavender EOs to give a nice smell) and a monthly gelatin treatment I got from science-y hair blog
It sounds complicated but since I plugged it into my smartphone calendar with reminders, I don't need to ruminate about whether it's time to do protein or a hydrating deep treatment, an overnight oil treatment or clarifying wash, or whether it's been long enough since the last egg wash or beer rinse so that I can enjoy it again without overdoing, etc.... I also have a handle on my itchy scalp issues finally. Trust me, I can spend a lot of time wondering about what I should do to my hair next, since the only "thing" there that is suitable to do often is the indian herbs. Pacing out a monthly schedule like this so that my favorite hair TLC treatments are spaced out properly helps me feel as if my routine is actually simple, since I don't need to think about it anymore, just follow the calendar and enjoy happy hair and scalp.

As long as it works and you're happy with it, it doesn't matter how complicated your routine is, leilani! And eventually there's a big chance you need to change your routine when it grows longer. I've done MANY treatments in the past, alternating between heavy oilings, some SMT's and my hair mayonnaise treatment but once I reached waist, it didn't work anymore. My hair became low porous because of the good care I learned on the LHC

I just had my yearly trim about a week ago. I was brushing hip at the time and now I am, well, still brushing hip. My stylist is awesome.
I had her trim about .5" from the ends but I also requested a change in hemline. I was straight-across the back blunt cut, I am now a slight (very slight) U-shape with some "point cutting" at the bottom to break up the ends and make them less heavy/poofy. She did a GREAT job. The longest part of my hair is still close to hip, and the u-shape didn't take away much from the overall length. I think it looks much better.
She also noticed my 3-day old henna (who wouldn't? It's RED). She thought the color was amazing and LOVED how it looked. She warned me about trying to color over henna (don't do it) but was otherwise very positive about my choice in hair coloring. Of course, she works at a "green" salon and doesn't use chemicals or harsh ingredients anyway. :) She has always supported my decisions and my desire to grow "crazy long" hair.

Hi!
I know I have not been that active but I did join this thread a while ago, but, I have made the desision to leave and enter the "Microtrimming and Maintaining club". I've "just let it grow and forget about it" wich in my case makes me forget what I've learned here about haircare aswell :( so my ends are now very thin, there are dots and breakage everywhere (again..). Im getting married a year from now so I want my hair to look its best :cheese:
Good luck everyone, I really hope you reach your goal soon :cheer:

I was more hip than waist but white dots and splits made me insane yesterday and I have no patience for S&D and I hated my wispy duck tail ends (I don't like my layers if the longest layer is see-through!!) so I trimmed back to waist. I want to get to tbl one day but I just don't want to do it without a thick hemline. I am still a but hung up about massive postpartum shed last winter and resulting regrowth tufts and blending them into my hair via bangs and layers, so I have no patience for the hair down around my pants waistband also making me mad. They feel so much better and blunt and healthy now. I microtrimmed my ponytail-on-forehead compact cut as well, so the ends of all the layers feel great too.
I love the idea of growing but I used to bleach repeatedly and hair on my head that took that for years and years is prone to white dots and splits that torment me at every red light (I can't find them indoors but in certain daylight, omg). I guess I'll keep trimming all my growth until I can't find damage...I don't want length at the cost of damaged hair attached to my head. It's so much nicer to take care of long hair when there aren't icky, tangly ends attached. I also only put it up if I'm hot or exercising, otherwise I wear it down or half-up so the ends are too easy to notice. I'm just not an updo-all-the-time person, I love the look of long hair as a fashion/beauty accessory. What's the point of having pretty, long, thick, nicely shaped hair (the compact cut really is so much better than salon haircuts for me) if no one ever sees it because it's always in a bun?
Anyways, sorry to ramble.... I know I'm in the minority on this forum of growers and updoers, I'm an obsessive trimmer when I see more than three split ends, and wear it down. Do I even belong here? I'm half a year chemical-free with my hair so I think eventually in the next couple years I'll be able to gain more and more length that still has healthy ends (no more bleaching is a huge thing for achieving more length and thickness!) and then I'll get to tbl ...and at that point probably wear my hair up more often as hair longer than hip probably is a lot more cumbersome to wear down, and I'm a mama who's into convenience.

Personally I plan to wear my hair up until I've gotten rid of the last of my bleach damage (show by the blue ends in my pic). I'm planning to microtrim 0.5-1cm or so every month (will do it on the first of every month so I don't forget) that way I keep my nice hemline, get rid of most of my splits which seem to be on the ends and keep growing a bit. I'm just so close to TBL, and I want to get there so much that cutting at all is hard.
Johannah
August 28th, 2014, 05:22 AM
Leilani, off course you belong here. Quality above quantity. If you can't live with those ends, cutting is the right answer. If you're not happy with your hair, it's really hard to grow it long without losing your motivation. Better slow progress than no progress, right? :) And I've been there too. I've cut 3" as well past months to get rid of splits and layers. Best thing I've done. It feels nice and soft right now without a massive amount of splits.
And if you can, wear it up. I know it's a hard thing to do - I really like the look of hair that's down and I hate wearing it up as well. But it made a MASSIVE difference!

Ooh, yes! I've noticed that too! My length is the same as before my trims (oh, well, it's 32" not 33" but you know what I mean) and my buns are waaaay bigger. I can't wait until my buns will be like: :agape:

August 28th, 2014, 06:13 AM
Leillani I also often feel I dont belong here because I wear my hair down and am willing to accept the damage that comes with that. I have done the long hair protective styling thing when I was a teen---I had pretty hair but it wasn't fun at all and then later I did whatever works for a couple of decades due to severe hairloss and lack of knowledge about wavy/curly hair. Now I have hair back again, I am thrilled to be able to feel it around me and wear it curly--how I wish CG was known when I was a teen! Also in my case my hair is far neater down due to tons of continual new regrowth (like yours except mine is artificially induced) as they blend in better. There does seem to be a length when wearing it down gets in the way--I am nearing that and will soon have to decide if I want to trim or keep growing. But some lhc techniques are helpful such as silk sleepcap, henna and cowashing and quality of hairtoys when I do need to wear it up.

Of course ya'll belong here! Down, up - you still like long hair!
Despite my hairtoy addiction, I would wear myhair down more if possible. At just past waist though, my baby fine, fragile hair would stay right here and break off and look horrid if I wore it down much. Also, even at this length it gets in my way! But then,it is so light and fine that it floats around and wraps itself around everything! Light switches, handbag handles - whatever it can get its little tentacles into! :p. So I've really no choice about it if I want to get any longer. Up it goes!

Well hey, at least you have thickness right? That must make your braids absolutely stunning! I have normal to thin hair and am always jealous of people with nice thick braids. Mine look tiny unless I do 5 or more strand braids. An update on me, I was to hip length, but the I had to get a trim and the hairdresser decided to add layers. :( so now I'm back between waist and hip with the shortest pieces only four to six inches long. Oh well. I'll get to tailbone someday I hope!

Why not use Feye's method? I mean, it can't possibly be worse than unwanted layers in your hair.

It's nice to have thickness back but my braids still look a bit too "funny" to be worn down - fat monster at the top and taper to nothingness... Ah well, we'll get there eventually!
Aww, I really sympathise about the hairdresser experience!!! :grouphug: Having your hair butchered is not nice. But, most hairdressers don't think it's a "Haircut" unless it's layered. After my last experience I only have my mum trim my hair :o

I did a quick microtrim this morning, no noticeable difference but hopefully over the next 6 months to a year or so it will get rid of the damaged ends and still allow me to keep growing. Although I almost want to maintain at hip+ for a little while so I can get used to it before growing on so might do a couple of half inch trims or maybe go to the hairdresser at Christmas and get it taken back to hip but that would be I won't make TBL for ages!

Everyone belongs here (to those who think they don't for whatever reason)!
I'm also in the microtrimming group as I'm getting rid of hairdresser imposed layers from 16 months ago. I haven't had a professional cut since. As a result of my aggressive microtrims, I've been stuck at waist for forever. My buns are getting bigger though, which is exciting. I think I may only cut half of my growth each month so that I can slowly gain some length. Sometimes I get cranky when I see how much others have grown in the past year while I'm just hanging out at waist still. Its good to have the inspiration though!

Well, my hair has been shedding like CRAZY and gotten brittle and breaking too. I thought my thyroid was the cause, we got it under control. Still doing it. It turns out one of my medications (that right now I MUST have!) can cause hair loss and dry, brittle hair. I'm so frustrated right now I'm ready to chop it into a pixie. It's been shedding for months now. I've lost 1/4" already (which I didn't have to lose!), and have breakage EVERYWHERE while not changing a thing about my routine, that it was thriving on - before they put me on this medication. It also looks so dull and lifeless and....ick.
I'm considering coning the heck out of it just to see if that would protect it some from the breakage. Gah. So very frustrating.
OTOH, if I ever do cut my hair - there will be an epic hair toy sale! :p

I measured my hair today, and it has barely grown the past few weeks. I was hoping to be able to trim it back to 35" on the 1st, or else 34.75", but it is barely past 34.75, and that is only a few hairs! :( I know it's still growing slowly, even though it's decided to pause. But why couldn't it pause AFTER I hit 36"? I want to thicken up my ends, but I don't want to go any shorter than my last month's measurement. Sigh.
Disappointment.

Awww, rags, I'm sorry to hear it.
Crumpet, thanks for speaking up, I'm glad there's someone else in this thread agressively self-trimming and thus stuck at waist forever. I needed some company! :-)
I just looked at pics from Apr 2013 (13 weeks pregnant and had just cut off 4" myself)compared to Dec 2013 (2-3mo postpartum) & it was barely BSL to HL+!! Talk about the miracle of pregnancy for hair growth!! Granted it was sorely needing a trim last December, if you'd have looked closely at the ends, as I kept highlighting all those months (3 times maybe) and never trimmed, and the canopy was broken off around APL from so many multi-processing with bleach, but you couldn't tell any of that without scrutinizing closely. At a glance I just looked like I had thick, blonde, hip-length hair. I've since become totally unwilling to let my hair condition be like that and am kicking the peroxide addiction of nearly 25 yrs. Now it seems impossible to get past waist with lush, dreamy ends since I still have bleach damage to grow out and I'm now addicted to the feel of recently microtrummed hair after I bought amazing hyper-sharp shears.
My point is, if you see ladies with abused hair that seems to grow easily to lengths you struggle to get to, remember that if it's not extensions, then it's probably in a condition that you'd never be willing to have attached to your head. Split ends and white dots aren't visible from several feet away and the feel of it is probably nothing enjoyable...any shine is also probably just a ton of coney serum or mineral oil or something that doesn't speak anything to the actual health and quality of the hair underneath.
I'm trying to conceive again so perhaps this winter I'll actually budge past waist after all. I'm not excited about that aspect of pregnancy though, as the flip side is the revolting postpartum shed around my front hairline is just such a bummer to deal with as the regrowth tufts grow in and stand straight up like devil horns on my head, making updos so ugly. At least this time around they won't stand out so stark and dark against bleach highlights, hopefully if I have virgin haircolor they'll blend in much better at least when my hair is down.

Ingrid, I am well over 50 percent silver. (Siggy pic is quite old). Even if I weren't allergic to the cassia (I'm allergic to a LOT of plants), I wouldn't want the colour change.
I AM wondering though - do any of you use a lot of cones on a regular basis? I use a coney detangling sorry, or a leave in, and sometimes a bit of Ice Shine, and that's it. I'm considering going back to my pre-LHC days of coney conditioner and mega - coney leave-in (Redken) with coney deep treatments. My hair didn't break as easily then (heck it was encased in cones! ). BUT then I have to wash every two days, and I'm not sure I have the energy for that right now. On the other hand, detangling right now is taking a lot of energy too. Bah.
I'm going to ask in October if there is any alternative to this med. The last time I was on it long term, my hair thinned down to maybe a 1" pony. It's already down to 1 1/2"! (And this was NOT the Great Shed some of you have heard me talk about. That time I lost waaaaay more hair.). :justy:

I'm so sorry, Rags. My son has to start a med that might give him some hair loss, I'm kinda scared. And not mainly about that part, there are worse things. My mom lost a lot of her hair when she took a med called Arava (mom has Lupus) and she now takes a med called Folbee also which is some extra vitamin to make sure she's getting folic acid and other vitamins to keep her hair. Might call the doctor to see if anything like that could be added to your regimen.

:grouphug: I'm so sorry you are going through this! I used to be a cone addict and it did help strengthen my hairs, it's just that I'd have to clarify each time I washed which used to be one a week. If you still want to keep washing to a minimum you can try using some coney serums like silk drops in between washes and you can buy at Walmart. I also loved using "got2be smooth operator" lustre lotion when I felt like I want my hair to smell nice to encourage stretching my washes. It helped me, and that way you can wash to a minimum, but when you do wash I'd clarify. Also I'd drink some green tea and do a meditative scalp massage if you can fit that into your schedule so that you can stimulate your roots while soothing your head while you get your medication issues fixed. Otherwise, hang in there and continue with your perseverence as you've grown this far and so we are cheering you even though it's not a smooth path right now. :blossom:

I'm sorry to hear about all of your hair and medication troubles Rags! That sucks. I've never had meds that caused hairloss, but one of my medications does cause swollen, painful gums sometimes, so I know some about how even necessary meds can cause unwanted and upsetting side-effects. Could you maybe add in some sort of vitamin like biotin into your routine? I've heard some say that this helps with hair growth. I've never tried it myself, but it might be worth a shot. The best of luck to you in this hard time and I hope that you and your hair are feeling better soon! :grouphug::flowers:

I also realized recently that my roots are now two years virgin and they're not quite to the bottom of my ear. I haven't measured, but that seems like slow growth to me.
I am so jealous whenever I see someone with hair longer than mine that is in great condition! I saw a woman with straight, blonde TBL hair yesterday and I couldn't stop staring. On the first day of school, I saw many women with TBL as well, but most of them wore their hair in a low ponytail.
It really feels unfair when I see all these beautiful long-hairs. I've never dyed, bleached, permed, straightened, my hair but there are always baby hairs that decide they need to grow in. (I'm pretty sure they're not breakage). So, if I wear my hair up, there is soooo much frizz. I don't know what to do.
Also, what updos are you guys doing at hip length? My cinnabuns and nautiluses are hurting me and falling out. I want a sturdy bun with sticks or a ficarre. I don't want to have to do a painful braided bun with 50 bobby pins for security.

I like to use a bun that I call the "hair slide bun", I call it this because you're making sort of a hair slide with your own hair. I wrap my hair once around like a cinnabun and then wrap the rest sort of underneath that keeping my thumb and pointer finger in the loop to keep it fairly big/loose. Then I smoosh the loop over all of the other hair and using a hairstick stick one end under one side of the loop then under the bun grabbing scalp hair and out and over the other side. Tell me if that's clear and if not I'll try and get a video of me doing this bun and put it up. :)
EDIT: I forgot to add, my hair is between hip length and sort of brushing BCL.

I love the braided nautilus. Recently I love figure 8s with innovations and signature clips. Spider mom's bun and even infinity buns I think adds style that will set you apart from those people in your school. If you like sticks try the Pha bun. The Pha bun finally works on me and I can use bigger sticks with that style.

Wow, thank you all so much! You all have really cheered me up on what's been a fairly horrid day (week and month too!). :flowers:
WD, I'm sorry about your son. I hope he's ok soon and maybe won't need the med anymore! And I somehow missed the pic Vanilla just posted! WOW your hair is looking great!!
I already give myself shots of the B vitamins (can't absorb them orally). That's what the Folbee mainly consists of , B vitamins. . My body no longer absorbs B vitamins, iron, and is increasingly stubborn about Vitamin D (though I'm managing to keep the levels up by taking an absurdly high dose - prescribed by my dr!). Therefore I'm really not convinced Biotin would absorb either.
I think I will give the cones a try, even if I end up having to clarify fairly often. It can't be worse than now! Sadly, I can't use either product you recommended Rowie, due to the scents. My asthma doesn't LIKE scents! Not at all. But thank you!
Beborani, I was prescribed Rogaine last time I was on this med long term. It causes allergic dermatitis. I'm glad you are having good luck with it!
Thank you all once again. You've really cheered up my day! :grouphug:

I'm back to the land of internet! Hello old friends! :D
It was a whirlwind summer full of hard work and harder play (and the barest minimum in terms of hair care).
I am happy to report that as of today's new length shot.... I'm (barely) at TBL!!!!!! :cheese::happydance::disco:
(red line is ~wrist/TBL)

As you all can see, the condition and thickness of the ends leaves something to be desired, so I'm going to be maintaining from now on. I'm super excited to start trimming again after almost a full year without one, mainly because of this picture I just took:
http://i1004.photobucket.com/albums/af164/veryhairyfairy/IMG_1607143x400_zps8fe6d23a.jpg (http://s1004.photobucket.com/user/veryhairyfairy/media/IMG_1607143x400_zps8fe6d23a.jpg.html)
(goodness, that's a stark contrast!)
And now that I've dropped off these pictures, I'm off to see what I missed over the summer! (and I hope y'all don't mind if I keep hanging around this thread, I'll probably be trimming to a bit above TBL often enough to still belong here) :flower:
------------------
Ps,
I wanted to add to the collective :grouphug:, rags, that's a terrible situation to be in, and I do so hope the cones help you out!

Huge hugs rags and WD about the hair loss :(. I also had to take a medication in college that also made my hair fall out. I was using cones at the time (Pantene smooth and sleek S + C and frizz taming creme). I did lose a considerable amount of thickness, but not length at the time. I found that my hair's protein needs when I was on the medication was greater, so I did weekly protein and moisture treatments, which seemed to help.
Thank you so much for the compliment, rags! And congrats to veryhairyfairy!

Thanks, Vanilla and Rags! Thanks for the hugs, Vanilla. Rags, I'm sorry about the problems with vitamins absorbing. We haven't started my son's meds yet so we don't know what will happen. It might be fine. He will at least be on it for a little while though, several months to calm his immune system so it will stop attacking his eyes and causing persistent inflammation.

Congrats on TBL, veryhairyfairy! Your color is amazing :thud: I have the same clear demarcation line in my hair, only I couldn't stand the thinness anymore so I'm maintaining at waist for the time being.. at least I can see a difference in health!

Rags, it sounds like it's been a long month for sure :-( I'm sorry to hear that and will share the :grouphug:
I wonder if maybe taking something, other than the vitamins, internally can help. I'm thinking specifically of honey (http://www.benefits-of-honey.com/health-benefits-of-honey.html). It has a lot of medicinal properties and a side benefit of that could include helping slow down the issues with your hair. If you decide to try it, I would get a local honey from your farmers market or Trader Joe's (it doesn't have to cost a lot, just have to make sure it's actually honey (http://www.foodsafetynews.com/2011/11/tests-show-most-store-honey-isnt-honey/#.VANev4CwJN4)) and eat a spoonful a day for a few weeks to see how it goes.
Very pretty, veryhairyfairy :-)

Hugs to you Rags. Much as I love your hair bling collection (we seem to have similar taste!), I'd much prefer for you to keep it and your beautiful hair. I always love seeing pictures of it!
Someone mentioned trying Cassia (forgot who). It may not work with your allergies (unsure!) but I can highly recommend the blend that I've been getting from Nightshade. Its really helped strengthen my hair and it FEELS thicker even though it isn't. There's a colourless Cassia that wouldn't affect your own lovely colour. I'm sure it would help.
Veryhairyfairy -- lovely hair and welcome back! I'm glad you're maintaining with us. Although I'm always excited when someone reaches TBL, I'm sad to seem them move on. Glad you'll be maintaining on THIS side of the TBL line!!

I haven't been here in ages. Spending too much time here just gets me obsessive about measuring my growth or what ends up being frustration at the lack there of. I've been very good and not trimming at all this year. Ok one or two mirco trims. I've completely given up tape measuring because it just isn't consistent. I think the problem is my waves and trying to measure myself. After 6 months I compared photos though and wow, my hair had grown a lot. Dry my hair is about 3 inches from BCL. I'm 5 inches from hitting the seat of my chair. And I'm really happy that my hair has nice thickness at the ends.

Nice pic Lauralonglocks! I've given up on hair pics in general since I feel like it's repetitive for me. Good for you though, sure wish I had the same enthusiasm as you do for self hair pics.
melesine yay we are like in similar situation with the chair test. I'm 5'11" and it seems like classic is still a long way even though I only have one more milestone to go before reaching my goal length of classic. Still it does help to just ignore my hair and look and listen to people's hair journey instead of keeping track of my own journey.

I have been measuring my hair by pulling it straight, otherwise I never know where it will be with my waves. I had all my body markers measured out so I could tell when I reached the marker and estimate how long until I reach the next one. Well, the other night I had my hair in a low pony. I put my hands on my waist with my fingers pointed to the middle of my back and my hair kept brushing it. At first I dismissed it because my hair was in a ponytail, then I got excited when I realized a pony would make it shorter, not longer. (2am mommy brain, what can I say) I check with DH in the morning and sure enough, it was at waist! I thought I was 1" away stretched! However, when I took the picture today, it shows just above waist again. It was humid, but my hair was in a bun all day, so I did not expect any shrinkage. The top of the black line is waist. It is hard to see since I have too many rolls, but I am working on it. Lol
I have not been active this summer, so since I am jumping back in, I thought i might as well start off in the WL to TBL even if I might not quite look like it in my latest pic. Btw, LLL, I think this is the third time I have shared this photo today. Yah for photo spamming! Haha

I know it seems like hair takes forever to grow sometimes. I was just looking at some old pictures in my imageshack, and two years ago my hair was so SHORT! Last year was also impossibly short. So it's amazing to see progress from a year ago for sure. No trims in the past year and a half almost, so it's 100 percent of my growth (barring any breakage).

Dear fellow waist to tailboners, :)
I think I'm always going to be in this topic! :D
I hit the tailbone in the beginning of the summer and then I got the urge to cut since my hair started to get caught everywhere, and I like to wear it down too much! What I also missed was the nice bouncing feeling that I have at waist, and that I later don't feel anymore.
Anyway, I decided to be patient and to go at least to classic once in my lifetime after I was 9 years old. Of course I didn't get there, but I went solidly past tailbone, but... Today I gave up and cut three inches back. Honestly, I was more scissor-happy than that, but I managed to control myself - it's always easier to cut more later than to regret instantly.
What is funny is that I think that this - between waist and tailbone - might be my ideal length. I'll be still trying to push myself further, to longer lengths, but I have to admit that I like my hair at these lengths best.
What is even more funny, when I cut I thought it was at waist again and I was preparing to write on "waist to hip" topic, but then I made a photo and discovered it's still past waist! Anyway, it's my perception that is changed now, it feels short somehow!
Here's the photo (please excuse the bad resolution and my mirror.... I could clean it before taking the photo, ouch!): here my hair is brushed and I possibly tilted my had back just a little, so I guess it's going to look a bit shorter than this, but anyway, somehow I'm happy that it's shorter now, but also pleased that it is still past waist for sure!

Nymphea -- lovely hair! You should have your hair the length that you want for it to be. It looks lovely at your new length (hip?). You have a lovely, full hemline and it should be easy to grow back more if you decide you want to do so!
