Thanks! I know layers are not real huge here on LHC but I needed to get off the last of bleach damage + add some movement and volume after my postpartum shed left me sad at lost thickness. It worked! I may grow out the layers or maybe just let the layers go from APL to TBL instead of SL to WL like they are now. I think that would look nice.

Leilani, I hope the shedding process soon stops for you. Your hair looks so lovely layered! Well done! Reminds me of mine a bit (layered with one of the methods as well). Why not join the TBL before Christmas thread challenge? If you don't get there, at least the journey to a longer length is nice! And why not join the no trimming challenge as well. I'm sure you can with those nice fresh ends! They'll last you a long while!

Oh, thanks you all! :) Yes, I want to grow it, but I really can't decide whether to trim more or just go as long as I want and then maintain. I'm glad that it doesn't look horrible (in the pictures it actually looks okay, though most days I just don't see it in the mirror). I'll keep growing then and hope it doesn't get any thinner at the ends.
Dessi, I love your haircolour! So elegant. It looks lovely, so if the taper you have doesn't bother you, then keep growing. If you find it intolerable, then trim as you go, or maintain until you get the thickness down the length a bit more. :)
Left racer hairs reach wrist/TBL in the shower! :joy::disco: WOOT!!!! So happy for you!
Hi ya'll! I want to join. I'm 32" WL but just cut in long layers to give some volume to my lifeless hair after a major postpartum shed (plus the last of highlighting damaged ends got whacked off so that's awesome, now I have very few splits or white dot ends anywhere and I can enjoy HEALTHY hair). What I'd like to do is enjoy the regrowth hair catching up with the rest of my hair throughout the rest of this year and next year, and enjoy the thickness increase while slowly inching down to tailbone. Or at least to hip. I've never really been past hip, ever, and rarely go past waist, I always get a bee in my bonnet to big chop for some silly whim or another. Now I'd like to go longer while trimming maybe a quarter inch off every six weeks off my ends just to keep those ends thick and healthy.
Here I am now, I'll try to keep everything the same for future progress pics.https://pbs.twimg.com/media/BqHWeMxIIAAGZWn.jpg:small

Your layered hair looks really nice on you, and who cares if LHC people prefer or don't prefer layers. It's not anyone's head of hair but your own. Do what makes YOU feel happy.

There are a fair few people with layers on LHC, so don't worry about breaking some sort of long-hair rule.

Lapushka I think I'll join the threads! Although, I don't know about no trims, I really love how these freshly cut ends feel, I think I'll just take 1/8th of an inch off every 4-6 weeks to keep them this fresh!

We'll be glad to have you on the TBL by Christmas thread!!! And don't worry. No trimming isn't for everyone, you just do what you want to do, and if that's microtrimming, then microtrimming it is! :)

My hemline slopes down in the front, growing a reverse bob out, so I get really excited passing smaller goals before I'm fully there. xD
This is now 34" :happydance: and I feel like I'm shorter [in height] than other posts I've seen that make 34 more of a waist measure?
But here it is! almost clearing hip in the back as well! :eye:

I just have to add my :thud: to this discussion. Favorite hairstyles... I'm not as long as you right now, but I am beginning to appreciate sectioning, even at my length with fine hair and average thickness. So, section and do twin buns, or do cameo braids around your favorite go-to buns.

Re-checking in. I've been stuck right at waist, so 30-31 inches, for about 6 months now. I have grown plenty, but have to keep trimming, earlier this year I bleached it so I'm paying for that now. Next time I feel like bleaching the whole thing instead of just the roots, I'm going to rethink having to stay the same length for 6 months to trim off damage!

I decided to keep on trimming my growth off till September/October to thicken up the hemline and to get rid of split ends. I finally got rid of layers, but the upper layer never got an actual trim in 3 years, so it's pretty dry with split ends. So I guess I'll be here for quite some time, haha.

I would agree that you have hit hip mariakatija! :)
Meh, I'm stalling or atleast only growing slow. I measure only quarterly and in the last 3 months I've only grown about 2.3 cm alltogether. That's about an inch. I don't wonder why though since the last few months were super stressful. Maybe it picks up now? Maybe it doesn't. Oh well, I'll just keep on going, as slow as it happens. Still not trimming this year and I have a slight chance of hitting TBL at the very end of the year.
The good thing is that my thickness is moving down even if the length stays "meh". My buns are actually starting to look or feel decent sized. I'll just keep on ignoring my hair and maybe one day I'll reach my length goal.

Congradulations rags. Hopefully your growth spurt will continue and you'll be at hip before you know it.
I cut a couple of centimetres off my hair as the ends were splitting more and more even with fresh scissors and careful treatment. They are still slightly dry but look better. It's put me back up to only just hip though and I miss the length. I was getting used to feeling it on the swell on my lower back and now it doesn't do that so much!

Well, the Summer sun is making my hair grow faster! My longest hairs graze TB at 41.5 inches. Started the inversion method this month to see if that helps too. Only 4 inches from classic!!!!! Won't get there by the end of the year, but will be there this time next year. Never thought I could do this. I have stopped trimming and keep it up all the time. Just S and D. hemline is thin but I will save major trims for another year. At this point I would rather have the length to make my favorite bun even bigger.

My hip is 35, and I'm right at 34 after a dreaded impulse trim.
I know I felt really long at BSL, and now it seems short at aaaalmost hip :violin: Because TBL was as long as my hair ever was trimmed to as a kid, I'm anxiously waiting to pass that and see if it still feels 'long' to me these days.

Congratulations on reaching new milestones, mariakatija and rags!
I can certainly relate to previous goals no longer feeling long. I'm trying hard to ignore my hair length in hopes of it rewarding me with a little growth spurt, but am only now starting to feel like my hair is waist length which probably means I'm getting close to hip. Why is it that waist length on other people looks so much longer than it does on me?
Also, not that I'm moving the goalposts or anything, but what length is classic length exactly? I've seen people define it as half your height, but also as "almost long enough to sit on", which are very different lengths on me.

My hair doesn't seem long at all to me. I wonder if that's because of taper and intentional layering making me feel like I have very little hair beneath bsl so my 32" is misleading, since every strand isn't 32".

I am at hip, and I do think my hair is long, but it isn't spectacularly long yet. In my area, there are a lot of Hispanic women who wear their hair very long. Often I see TBL to Classic in that demographic. Amongst white women, my hair is notably long, because it is past my bra strap by a long shot. But it's not long enough to attract attention when worn down. That's when I'll know that it is properly long.

I always thought waist length hair was really long and pretty before. Being on LHC has ruined that for me! I still think it looks great on others, but mine is now at hip and it still feels really short to me. Hopefully by tailbone it will seem longer. Just the same, I wouldn't trade my LHC enlightenment for anything!

I measure hip by my actual hip bones where they poke out in front (little knobs where my legs bend), which is 35" on me. I don't go by the fleshy mound a lot of people call hip because it varies drastically depending on my current weight. Waist is about 32".
I agree that layered hair feels shorter. I have a sort of V thing, too, whereas I always had a blunt hemline before. My hair felt long at TBL. It feels super short to me ever since I chopped 16" off in 2013. FTL felt TOO long to me. I think this varies by person.

I'm just brushing waist at ~30 inches. My hair is a bit stretchy though, so when I pull my longest pieces they are pretty solidly there. Unfortunately my height (5'9) makes it longer between milestones for me than for someone who might be several inches shorter. Oh well. I'll probably lurk a bit here until I feel I actually belong in a few inches from now.

Sleepytangles, I concur with Lapushka. I believe you are at hip.
Waitingsolong, I always thought hip length was the top of the iliac crest. If I went with the knobby part in front where my legs bend, that would be about equal with BCL-TBL on me, depending on the exact spot you are talking about. Chopping 16" would be quite a shock. I have no doubt it feels extremely short now.
Aurum, welcome to the thread!
I took this photo yesterday. I am brushing belly button length in front. My navel is right under the last button you can see on my shirt, and look! My hair is just reaching it.

Wow, you've had good growth LLL!
I agree with others who have said that layers make their hair feel shorter. I've been microtrimming pretty aggressively since January. I'm still at waist, although sometimes a bit above waist when my waves are extra-wavy. Even so, my hair feels longer now that its thicker at the hemline. I'd love to start growing again since I'm keen to reach hip but I also really like the changes in my hair thickness!

I know exactly what you mean, lol
Can I join, please? My waist/hip gap is rather big, and I feel like I'll be struck with waist lenght for really long :(
Sorry for the angle, but this photo is really the one in which I'm standing better. The lenght is really accurate.
I'd say you're a little bit above hip, but not much. But I can't tell because of the angle of this picture.
I took this photo yesterday. I am brushing belly button length in front. My navel is right under the last button you can see on my shirt, and look! My hair is just reaching it.
Congrats! I'll hope I'll get there soon as well!!
Wow, you've had good growth LLL!

Hi! Just thought I would introduce myself since I am new to this thread. I really appreciate all your comments and suggestions for growing from waist to TB. I am currently at 30 inches/a bit past waist length, but I have very curly hair 3b//3c so I can totally relate to the "feels like I will never reach TB" comments! I am about 5-6 inches away from TB using the measuring technique of "measuring my hemline to the chair while sitting." Hopefully in one more year I will be at TB if the fairy knots don't force me to trim, but who knows for sure. That would be nice, anyways! :) I can also commiserate with the cinnabun becoming more difficult to do at this length. This has been my go-to safe hairstyle, but I can tell that I might need to do different styles due to weight and length. I am a claw clip lover due to the cost :) as well as ease of use, although I know some people prefer hairsticks, hair forks, etc. I just feel like those really pull on the back of my head hair when I use them, but I have seen some gorgeous heads of hair with people who love these hair toys so maybe I am using them wrong? or pulling too tightly? Anyways, I siincerely appreciate these comments on this thread and look forward to reading more from other people who are at my same length or longer. Sorry for the length of this reply! Just excited to be a part of y'all :D

Crumpet, I know exactly what you mean. Much as I loathed my unwanted cut - the fact that my hemline is very much thicker is quite nice! (I just wanted to do it gradually, dang it! :p ) Mine still doesn't feel as long as it did before it got cut though (in fact, it's still 1 1/2" shorter). So I'm not sure about a thicker hemline "feeling" a lot longer to me, but I think that's more because my hair is so very thin to begin with!
LLL, excellent growth!

Lots of nice hair since i last posted. I don't have anything of significance to report. LLL, I think you and I have similar length--mine is probably 33 at its longest and I am only 5 ft tall if that but no way is my hair touching belly button on the front however much I stretch it and compact myself--uhmmm I am well-rounded. In the back it has crossed bcl . Waiting, Even bones are not likely to remain in the same place as we age--I need to work so much harder to maintain decent posture--so they are shifting markers too.

Yes! That's what I'm hoping for too!. I'm feeling fairly patient right now at least (only twinges of impatience).
LongCurlyTress -- beautiful curls! Whenever I get cranky about my waves making it hard to tell how long my hair is, I remember how much harder it is for curlies. I adore curls though and I think its well-worth the patience. Well done on getting this far. I'm sure it will only get more gorgeous!

Hi and welcome! I'm a partial curly, though not as curly as you. If cost is a problem for hairtoys, you may like trying aluminum double-pointed knitting needles as hairsticks. Those work very well for me. The trick is to weave them in and out between your bun and your scalp so you get the bun sort of "sewn" to your head with the stick. They sell those needles quite cheaply in packs of 5. I usually keep 3 straight and bend 2 approximately in half (into a U shape) so I can use them like giant hairpins. 2 of those will hold a cinnamon bun most of the day for me.

LongCurlyTress, have you tried the Nautilus bun yet :)? Or this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z0k3dD4qX34) pencil bun? I've too the impression that sticks pulls to much the hair on my nape, expecially if my lenght isn't still fully enough for the bun... my only solution is to switch frequently the placing, and doing braids instead of updos :(.

July 4th, 2014, 05:47 PM
Waitingsolong, I always thought hip length was the top of the iliac crest. If I went with the knobby part in front where my legs bend, that would be about equal with BCL-TBL on me, depending on the exact spot you are talking about.
I would have 2 more inches to go from hip until BCL going by the way I measure hip. (TBL is about an inch further down than BCL for me). If I go by the top of the iliac crest I would have 4" to go from hip to BCL. So there is 2" difference between the crest and where the bony frontal protrusion of the iliac is on me.
Right now I have about 6" to go to BCL. Really, though, I am just aiming for a solid hip (4 more inches). I will decide if I want to grow longer once I get there. I dislike my hair getting into my waistband on my jeans which happens around hip length :/
Waist: 30"
Hip: 35"
BCL: 37"
TBL: 38"
Classic: 42"
Currently: almost 31"

Ok, I hope this picture works and isn't huge. I'm having lots of technical issues so it's a small miracle I've gotten this far.
If it works, it's my hair dried as straight as buns can get it (which is how I usually wear it these days since the CG method is hard on my neck). I have just passed BCL, which is about where my shirt ends in the pic. I tried to get my grey undershirt to end around TBL, so that is more or less how far I have left to go!

Hi, all! I'm back in this thread. I'm not a very active user; I spend most of my time here lurking.
So, two things: 1. I reached tailbone! 2. But then I cut back to waist. It feels so short! :p
A few days ago. My hair, dry, looking straight ahead, solidly touched the tip of my buttcrack. Is that tailbone or BCL? I've seen that BCL comes before TBL but your hair hits your tailbone before it hits your buttcrack, what's up with that?

I cut it wet today and now it's at exactly waist.

My hair was so dry at the ends, which had 4 years of blonde dye and sun damage. My hair is now mostly virgin, I probably still have bits of dye left somewhere.
Sorry about the angles of the shots, I keep forgetting to have my boyfriend take lower pictures.

Jupiterinleo, lovely locks! BCL refers to the very top where the crack starts. TBL on me is about an inch south of BCL. :)

Lol, right? I was always so confused about lengths. I wish there was some sort of official length chart floating around here.
Ooh, an Aries/Pisces cusp sounds interesting. Those signs seem so different. I'm a Sagittarius sun, Scorpio moon, Aquarius rising.

I'm regretting my enthusiastic S&D phase from a few months back - it got rid of a lot of my splits, but now I have serious fairytale ends. I kinda like it, but I really want a thicker hemline. In order to get that I would have to cut about 3 inches. :( If I can, I'd like to wait until I hit tailbone. But I could just as well cut a little each month and not hit my end-of-the-year goal of BCL or tailbone.

I'm pretty much back at waist again after a middle-of-the-night trim some days ago.. I regret nothing though! Oh my what a difference. I cut off about 2", which is still not all my previous damage but at least the worst of it. Previously that day I decided to wear my hair loose, but I felt horribly self-conscious about my ends.. a couple days after the cut I wore it loose again and this time I felt confident! It didn't stick to itself and tangle in the ends like before, and it doesn't look as thin either!
So basically I'm starting over in this thread, I'm thinking about following my original plan of maintaining at waist until my damage is gone (instead of microtrimming and growing to hip). Here's to growth! :toast:

Benign neglect here too. :waving: Luckily I've been super busy, so I haven't had much time to think about it.
I'm trying really hard to stand strong against the urge to trim. I've had a few beach days that have wreaked havoc on my ends. (My rule about my hair is that if it starts preventing me from doing things I really like doing, like swimming in the ocean, then it has become an unhealthy force in my life and I either ignore the damage or cut it.) The good news is that I've streamlined my beach routine - coconut oil from shoulders down upon arriving, braid, soak hair in tap water before going in ocean, forget about hair, enjoy myself, wash it out and deep condition later. My hemline could definitely benefit from losing a couple inches, but my hair is BCL and only 2 inches away from tailbone, so I'm holding off on my trim until absolutely necessary or December. I can do a helix bun now, so that's pretty good incentive to keep the length I have. :D

Benign neglect is awesome. I'm hoping to get more into it once I trim out more of my layers and pre-LHC damage. My routine now is pretty simple though: wash 1-2 times a week, coconut oil or nighblooming panacea as needed, and cassia treatments when I can. The cassia is the most demanding part of my routine, but I expect that I will phase it out as my healthier hair takes over. I mostly wear my hair up and I've been microtrimming all or most of my growth about once every 2-4 weeks (whenever its most convenient).
Although I'd like more length, I also enjoy the process of slowly growing out hair. My hair is my bonsai tree.

Maybe it's because you're a iii? I have that issue as well, and it just barely will go once around, so it's all way too loose. I'm hip+ with layers (one inch and a half away from TBL). A LWB is comfortable, but it's just too soon for a cinnabun.

To you guys talking about cinnabuns, I actually am able to do a cinnabun (with my hair fork, and have it stay comfortably) for the first time, and it was only when I cut back to waist. I'm not able to so a solid cinnabun when I'm hip and longer. Maybe that's because our hair is on the thicker side? I kind of sticks out pretty far and I can't get it to lay flat on my head when my hair reaches a certain length. Also, I wasn't using any pins. Spin pins make a huge difference.

To answer your question: BCL is considered to be where your bum crack begins. Tailbone is the end of your spine, generally about an inch south of BCL. But there may be some people where it's one and the same.

Just got back from a week at church camp. I have to say, I had kind of short hair compared to all the girls there! One of the staff had knee length hair and a couple of the girls were around TBL, MANY MANY at hip length. I think I started a trend ;)

how did you start a trend if their hair is longer than yours? *confused*

Because I had TBL-classic length for several years and before I cut last year it was FTL, so it WAS longer than theirs.
But I was kidding. This gal is no trend starter. LOL.

I am short but I had measured classic to 41 much earlier when it was far far away from realm of possibility but seeing so many taller women measuring around that length I remeasured in front of camera in video mode and went hmmmm..it is barely 39 and that makes sense. So I am less than six inches to classic and 1 inch to tailbone by poking around method and 3 inches if I do the hair touching the floor thing. But with curly hair and thin ends it doesnt look like it. So being short has its advantages which is cancleled by curls!

Benign neglect is harder than I thought because I still need to find a routine :p
I ran out of my keratin conditioner, so I used Herbal Essences Hello Hydration shampoo and conditioner. My hair is a lot dryer, and a 1b?? Last week, when I was using the keratin line, my hair was a 2a, some parts even a 2b, even after I combed it. So protein give me 2a hair. I don't get it.

Sorry Johanna: no clue here. My hair always made clear he hates proteic treatment, so I intentionally avoid them. I know nothing about how keratin products work...
But yes, I agree it sounds weird: aren't keratin treatments straightening :hmm:?
Are you happy or unhappy by the change?

I thought protein would make my hair straighter as well. I never heard of this happening to someone else. But I've always considered 2a as the perfect texture  so I'm certainly happy about it!! Today my new shampoo/conditioner arrived (Gliss Kur Ultimate Volume). It contains way more protein than the one I used before, so I can't wait to try them out (probably Sunday)!

Welcome, LongCurlyTress!
Still brushing hip. Haven't measured yet. That's coming up August 1st. I'm hoping for 82 cm or 32 inches. The bottom two inches of my hair is markedly thinner than the rest. The reason is because I have one long layer I'm still growing out and have been maintaining with S&D. It doesn't look terrible, but I do want to keep microtrimming every other month to eventually cut it off. I did a microtrim on June 1st and July 1st. I think I'll wait until September and trim 5 mm. I can see a lot of ends of hairs sticking out on the bottom 3-4" of my hair, but it is most noticeable on the bottom 2 inches. I think trimming a teeny bit every other month will improve my hemline slowly but surely, and in between I can S&D to keep my splits under control.

i took some more pictures (not sharing these ones though) to see if i could see what the length was and figure out where my hips are and where my waist was, without my clothes getting in the way and making it hard to see where things are, because i always thought my waist was where my pants finished but it is not the 90's anymore so they don't finish very high up and then i thought hips were much lower, at the top of my legs, below my pelvis, but that's not the definition people here seem to be using? (i was thinking the socket that the thigh bone goes into is the hip). but on the back of the pelvis there are two dimples, on me about 5cm above BCL, i think everyone has them because they show up in paintings, but i don't know what they're called, i read some wikipedia articles but they didn't tell me. anyway, my hair comes just down to those dimples. this feels like it should be a milestone of some sort if only we knew what they were called. Butt Dimple Length or something.

I was at my goal of tailbone when I joined LHC but did a big chop of 4 inches on June 1st to get rid of some splits and layers from pre-LHC days... so I am here :-) Will see how I like it with the changes when I get to TB before deciding to keep growing.
So, a warm hello to everyone!

Hip is the top of the iliac crest as far as I know. The socket where the leg joins with the hip would be equal to about BCL to TBL on me.

Thanks for giving me a name for them, angel fingerprints. And I think I was just confused, not knowing that hip was a larger region than just the socket, thanks Laura. I was hoping to not have to trim at all until tailbone, but finally got fed up with all the splits, white dots, Velcro-y ends, etc. So I trimmed off about an inch, maybe a bit less this evening. So I'm back to just at/past hip. It hurts to pick up the scissors, but the end do feel better now. Now to make a satin sleep cap... without telling mom what I want the satin for.

I cut from waist to BSL at the beginning of last year and kept measuring against what I would have been but then I realised how much less damage I have than I would have and the length seems less important. I really want to get to at least next January before another trim (I did an inch trim the other month to. Help with splits) because it feels like I've been at hip for ages!

Picked up scissors today and took a good half inch across my hem..... and switched my compact cut to front hairline ponytail, thinking my bangs I'm growing will become a "layer" faster that way.
I like having fresh ends but feel like I'll be at waist forever!

I feel like my hair is stuck at this length. I hope benign neglect will help and I'll be shocked to see my growth in a couple of months. I just hope I can find a routine to keep on benign neglecting because I really need to take some sort of a 'break' from my hair obsession.

I'm joining in the "I've been stuck at this length" forever club. I've been microtrimming off all or almost all of my growth since January. I had terrible layers cut into 15 months ago and I'm trying to even out my hemline some. I think it will take a year to get them all done (!!). I am so much happier with my hemline and my hair in general since I've been microtrimming. Even so I may slow down the microtrimming sometime this autumn, since I'd like to start gaining length again sometime soon.

I'm trying to decide whether to trim this month or wait until next month. I really want to gain length, but I also want to maintain a thick hem. The last layer in my hair hasn't had a proper trim in so long, almost two years, so it is more splitty than the rest. I have been doing a lot of S&D trying to maintain it, and now I have markedly thinner ends, about the bottom 1.5-2". I decided if I had awesome growth this month and made it to 83 cm, I'll trim 5 mm. If I am at 82 cm, I'll wait another month to trim. Even my two small trims on June 1st and July 1st have really helped thicken my ends. It's kind of addicting to trim! I like the thicker, fresher ends so much. But I really want to continue gaining length, so I need to find a balance.

Hi Lauralonglocks! Just be careful not to cut too much. My hair seems to grow really unevenly, featherlike, but since each strand looks healthy, I am just not going to trim for as long as I can go. I put my hair in a bun everyday, so I just forget about my ends this way. Benign neglect! Good luck! Sounds like you have things under control. Just be careful and don't get too scissor-cutting happy! That is what happens to me... I just keep seeing uneven ends, and then all of a sudden an inch and ahalf is cut off, like what I did in June/July. Yikes! Be careful!! :)
Also, I have noticed that using Faye's method leaves my ends uneven once my hair is down in back. This could be due to my curls, but... when my DH trims my hair using a Creaclip on my back, the ends are even afterwards. Just a head's up if you are doing Fayes trimming method. This does seem to work for straight haired gals, but for me, I need a man! LOL! good luck!
And huge WELCOMES to all those who are new to this thread! Waist length and beyond gets really exciting! I only just arrived at waist length this past spring, so now I can do fancier buns with my longer hair. Congrats!

I also crave a pause in obsessing.
But I can't benign neglect unless I want to wash daily with a strong scalp balancing shampoo and I can't stand waiting for my thick hair to dry more often than twice a week.
