Hello everyone!

I thought I would pop in here. My hair is hip length, which is 33" on me (I'm small :p). I think I have about 1.5" or 2" to go to reach tailbone. Once I'm there, I'll probably stay that way for a while, so I can try to thicken my hemline.

I was at waist for quite some time, and finally last year I decided I needed to stop trimming so often and just let it grow, with some minor trims every six months. Seems to have done the trick as it is getting much longer now. :D

Hmm.. ok, so I might not be in this group for long... my hair has just reached the top of my... ahem, vertical smile... is that tailbone? or hip length? I'm not completely sure... At any rate I'm 5'9" and it's 36" long.

Okay, I am formally in this group (somewhere between waist and hip with my longest tip), but I think I'm going to be here a while because I've made the big decision to trim 1/4" every month so I can gain a bit of length but gradually take off my layers and old ends.

I'm at the longest I've ever been in my life, so I don't mind it taking a bit longer if it means getting to tb with healthy ends. :)

Urgh, I'm so close to hip I could scream! My growth has seriously slowed down since summer ended, and I've only gained about 3/4" in the last two months, painfully slow compared to the 1" per month that I had when I first joined. Still growing though. It'll get there eventually.

I'm so glad that there are so many people in this thread!:D
I seem to be stuck in a no man's land, I recently got a trim (needed but still) and I'm back to 38,5 from 39 the last time I measured. TB is at least 40 inches on me. I'm planning on getting some more face framing layers and a deep pointed v-hemline once I'm steady at TB and then grow to classic maybe.

Being short from TB, my buns are still pretty small since my hair is a bit thin. It seems that I'm in the awkward period where hair is too long to be fluffed in a very messy bun, and too short to look impressive in a bun. Last week, a friend told me how impressed he was that I could hold such long hair in such a small bun. Did he think that was a compliment? Do you ever feel like this?
Actually, I'm not so despaired, I found his comment funny, and I don't REALLY mind. It's just... annoying.
I'm starting to experiment with sock buns, which could help me handle the problem for a while, even if I feel like cheating...

My buns are like that too... its a little sad, especially when I go for a double bun style and it looks like two golf balls on the top of my head. Upshot is, I'm still able to do French Twists and other styles that thicker haired folks had to leave behind at BSL, and I'm about 2 inches from hip

im at hip getting closer and closer to tailbone every day. something i just noticed that makes me happy.. when i take a bath.. and yes i take baths instead of showers. i always kneel to wash my hair.. and recently my hair has been touching the tops of my thighs when i kneel in the bath.. im not yet tailbone wet though.. however i have reached wet one of my major goals.. i call it scar length.. its the amount of hair needed to cover my biggest scar (spinal fusion surgical scar running almost the full length of my back).. im really excited..

oh and when i went to my family's xmas party gathering thing everyone was focusing on my hair.. im pretty sure i got a compliment from every single family member.. well except for my 7 year old cousin who was too busy running around having fun with my other cousin Chris..

ive never had so many people petting my hair in one day before.. thank goodness it was a good hair day.. i would have been upset if they had petted me and said that it was dry or unhealthy or something

I was at TB all of 09. Couple weeks ago I cut back to just below waist. I measure waist at elbow. My reason was to thicken the hemline and it feels and looks much better.
So starting once again from waist. Should be hip length (6 inches away) by the end of 2010. No trims in sight here.

do you all ever have a moment that you really wish you could have taken a picture of?.. i put my hair into 7 braids the other night and when i took them out and brushed my hair, *POOF!*.. huge hair.. it poofed so much that even when i wet it a bit and put it in a ponytail the end of the ponytail poofed to a full 12 inch diameter.. then i put it into a bun and it ended up being the biggest bun ive ever had.. the hair refused to depoof no matter how tight i twisted the bun..

oh and as for this thread being involved.. even with all the curlyness my hair was still waist.. when i used to braid my hair and do that i would only be bsl.. so im making progress after all!

I'm at waist, or very slightly below waist. Heading for TB and beyond that, (hopefully!) Classic. I'm hoping to hit hip during the summer sometime.

At present, I CWC once a week, and wash it after swimming with a chlorine-stripping shampoo followed by heavy oiling and then conditioning (haven't been swimming for about two weeks now, though. :( ) I oil with an alternating regimen of olive oil, coconut oil, and Nightblooming anointing oil and her split ends treatment stuff, which smells incredible and makes me happy when I put it on.

I've been religiously wearing my hair up in a variety of buns, but have enjoyed wearing it down more often in the past month thanks to holiday fests and such. I love feeling it brushing against the backs of my elbows!!

I occasionally see split ends, but somehow I never can find them during S&D attempts, which is annoying. About once every three or four months, I twist my hair into a ponytail coil and take off the uneven ends from the bottom of the coil, but that's as far as I go with trims.

I am seeing much more silver than I used to, owing to severe stressors over the past year - I was dying with box due once every 4-5 months, but I think I am switching to henna or henna/cassia this year, if I can be brave enough to go for it!! I LOVE henna hair...I'm just afraid of orange, especially when I have been growing out for so long!! So, we'll see.

I want to be here! I did not think there was a thread for my hair length. I have been just past waist forever, almost to hip until I went for a trim in August and lost 4":-( instead of 1". Took me right back to "just at" waist. I feel it hasn't grown since but I am sure it has.

I think my definition of TB is slightly off the LHC definition. My TB puts me about 3" past hip. And when my hair was almost at hip, it was only at waist if I had my hair in front. So we are only counting down the back, right? Because where I really want to be is past hip in FRONT, not just in back.

Am I a weirdo?

Not at all, I want my hair to be tb-ish from the front, which is probably classic on the back. I think I have more of a goal length zone - anything from tailbone length to fingertip would be a dream come true.

My hair is also waist from the front when it's hip length on the back. It just the way it goes - the hair that makes up your hemline goes a longer way from your nape over your shoulders to the front, so it turns out shorter.

I count tailbone as the middle between the top of the vertical smile and classic. Seems fair to me.

Checking in, too. I'm at high hip, definitely past waist, but still have several inches to reach TB. I plan to trim just enough to keep the hemline nice. I just hope I can get to TB and still have a nice hem! The longest it's ever been was just barely TB, and the hemline was awful so I trimmed back. I'm praying that buns and techniques I've learned here will let me get there without the damage I had before.

RoseRedDead

Okay, I have a serious question. My hair is slightly past waist length, and I have some taper goin' on. I don't like it, but it's not severe or anything... so... Should I grow to hip and maintain there to thicken up my hemline? Or should I grow to tailbone and then do it?

I'm really really liking my hair more the longer it gets. It just feels "right".

Your thoughts/opinions/critiques are greatly appreciated!

Heidi_234
January 15th, 2010, 02:25 PM
RoseRedDead, I think you should get to the bridge first and then try to cross it. :)
I'm at the point where my layer keep thinning out, I maintained for half a year at hip stretched without intending to, and I was really bummed when I realized that I actually maintain instead of trimming half of the growth. After all the length cut, my ends are still thinning, my hemline still sucks, and I still have about 5" to trim before I get rid of all the damage, layers and taper.
So, just go with the flow, it is nicer the longer it gets after all. :)

January 15th, 2010, 08:56 PM
First time posting here, but here I am! I think I am smack dab in the middle of waist, with the longest point of my taper being at the tip of hip. Hard to tell, though. And I'm not sure how much further I'll go, but the bottom of hip sounds good atm.

I know on myself I like thicker ends...

Your trim looks good, UP Lisa! I know I'd hate to have to part with the length. :(

After my last trim, this is the length I am at. It feels like starting over but I am enjoying it too. My goal while growing it out again is to try to maintain a thicker hemline. Ironically, my ends had become so thin that despite the lost length I can still do many of the hairstyles I loved, so that is comforting.

I am about an inch shy of hip. My problem is I get there and then I trim and I get there and I trim and I get there. I am going to try and hold off trimming as long as humanly possible.

Thanks RoseRedDead! I'm very overly excited to be here! :o
I think I won't have to wait as long to reach hip as I did waist. My (current) goal is really a bit past hip, sort of top of tailbone/buttcrack length. :D

Hey, I'm finally at waist! :agape:
I'm so surprised, that I held off posting to this thread . . . I kept running back to the mirror to check one more time.

It's hard, because I have a deep U-shaped hemline (growing out 'face framing' layers) and I don't FEEL like I'm at any given milestone until long after my longest layers actually are.

My ultimate goal is classic but I have no idea if I'll ever make it there. My hair is fragile, and looks thinner than it is because it tends towards transparency.

It's nice to have a thread full of people to grow along with!

After my last trim, this is the length I am at. It feels like starting over but I am enjoying it too. My goal while growing it out again is to try to maintain a thicker hemline. Ironically, my ends had become so thin that despite the lost length I can still do many of the hairstyles I loved, so that is comforting.

Your hair sounds very similar to mine. :) My hair is just a tad below my waist now. I trimmed about an inch last month 'cause I like a thicker hem & my hair is very fine. Plus I have a bang length growing out too. My plan is to get to tailbone, then trim until my bang grows out.
And I've been playing/learning different hairstyles too. I'm really wanting to get down finger positions & multiple braids styles while it's still easy to separate the strands without 'em tangling like crazy.

Right now I'm enjoying the journey.

I've just passed waist now and I'm on my way to tailbone. I've got a lot of taper, but I won't stop for getting it out until I reached my goal length. I usually wear it up, so nobody sees my thin ends.

Don't worry, you'll get there! Especially if your hair is healthy - you'll get less breakage and have to trim less! :)

I think I'm at tailbone now, oddly I don't do much with my hair nowdays. Just wash and go and sleeping with it loose and not even combing it before running off to work. I feel a bit tired of my hair recently, I dyed it with purple special effects that made it brown together with my henna and I'm still washing out that darn dye. I have some splits and I'm considering a new v-shaped hemline and some face framing layers to make it easier to wear my hair down. Right now it's a major hassle.
TB is definitely not as glamorous as I imagined it!;)

Checking in, it has been a while since I uppdated. I'm at hip while curly, or at least my longest layer is. My shortest layer is around BSL. I still have 2-3 inches until TB, at least. I'm thinking about growing to TB then maintain and let my layers catch up a little. I don't think i want a blunt hemline, I like my hair in a V-shape. But it has started to fairytale on me, and it's making my ends look thin. So, maybe I should grow to TB, then stay there until the rest catches up, and if I don't like it i'll just cut it back into a V? What do you think?

Oh, and it's so fun growing with you all!

Ha, Isilme, me too! Except I mostly keep mine in a perma-braid that I put up during the day.

I'm actually going to trim an inch (or two) today or tomorrow, in a V-shape, but I was also considering cutting in some face-framing layers too. Ultimately, I'll probably go back to waist.

Oh, and dye it an interesting (pink-purple) colour! :D

Ok, a weird question, now that I've reached the «can I call this tailbone?» stage.
Well, where's tailbone lenght, exactly? The tailbone is a bone that is a few inches long, so what do we refer at exactly? The very tip of it is (I think) way down between my buttocks, but there's a a lump just before the crack... Not TMI, hopefully...

I only realized very recently that I had passed waist. It just hit me now that I have moved into a new thread! I'm going to have to do trimming for a while to let hair that is growing back in after stress loss catch up somewhat and thicken things up. Never thought I would be considering shooting for tailbone.

I always thought tailbone length is the top of the crack, but apparently the real tailbone is somewhere below that bone you refer to. I just assume tailbone length is halfway between BCL (butt crack length) and classic. Works for me.

I just looked at the new lenght classification page, and it seems that you're totally right! So, I'm wayyyy further from my mini-goal than I thought I was, but there's a bright side to it: once I'm there, I'll be closer to my final goal: classical!
And anyway, my hair didn't get suddenly shorter: I'm still longer than I've ever been, and I'll still probably hit 38“ the next time I'll measure.
Another bright side: I'll be growing with you guys for a little longer! ;)

Oohh this is where I am at. I'm currently at hip but I want to reach tailbone so badly. I used to be there but cut off 6 inches because I wanted to get rid of my layers. I'm soooo close!!! I have about 2 inches to go. WOOT!

Feli
February 23rd, 2010, 03:13 AM
I've got 2 more inches to go but I'm going to have 2 inches cut off today, which is a "big" trim for me. I trim twice a year but usually only 1cm each time, which seems to be enough to keep my hemline looking thick. At this length though I am starting to notice that my ends look a little thinner - I know some of you like that look but I'm definitely a thick-hemline girl - so I'm going for the trim. Am feeling kind of nervous even though I keep saying top myself that it's only hair and it'll grow back quickly. Why do we hang on to every cm even when we know it'll look better with a good trim?

WaitingSoLong
February 23rd, 2010, 05:14 AM
Feli, good luck with the trim. I have sworn them off.

Ok, I had my daughter AND my husband measure my hair and they both came up with 33.75"! Yay! I am not stalled! I have measured every month and my growth rate is around 3/4" a month. That puts me at goal one around October. But I would be surprised if it stays consistent at that rate. I am curious to see if it goes up any in the summer.

Here is my club! I'm actually overshot my goal length but my ends are quite wispy, and i'm trying to figure out what I can use on my hair to have it looking as impressive as possible.

I'm past tailbone wet, but it springs up to "past waist" when dry and then gradually falls to ... iliac length. hurray curly hair!

right now I just want my ends to get a little bit blunter, and figure out what to use on my hair now that its changed.

Feli
February 23rd, 2010, 05:39 AM
WaitingSoLong: thanks for wishing me luck. Feel a bit silly for being nervous! What is your "Goal 1"?

I can't really make head nor tail of my growth rate. I measured around once a month through the summer and hardly noticed any change, then I measured this week after not measuring for maybe 2-3 months and had 37.5 inches instead of the 35 inches I'd been stuck with for ages. Either my hair is very strange or I am measuring very inaccurately.

So, am back from my trim. Had between 2 and 3 inches cut off - where the ends were sort of getting see-through.

I'm now back at waist rather than hip and although I plan on growing to tailbone just to try it out (but with thick ends), I definitely think that waist length is more manageable than hip. From waist onwards was the first time that I have needed a bigger trim and it was really starting to annoy me too much to wear my hair down, because it just seemed to get caught everywhere. I can imagine that I will get to hip or tailbone again and then decide to cut back to waist. It just seems easier to keep looking nice and far more manageable when wearing it down. Has anyone else found that longer than waist sort of gets difficult?

Longer than waist definitely is difficult to handle. I had tailbone length hair a few years back, and cutting it back to above waist really is one of few cuts I've been happy about. It was pure relief, since suddenly I could wash and comb and brush and braid and...you get it, without straining my arms in the same way. And of course, as with any major cut, my hair became so soft and almost tangle free which was wonderful. Of course, tailbone then was more of an accident than a choice, because I had not had a cut in five years. Imagine that, on fine, fragile hair! The ends was not a pretty sight at all. Now I'm growing my hair back, taking care of it, so hopefully I will have soft, nice ends and it will hopefully make all the difference. :)

I too am wondering whether I will find hip length better the second time round when my ends are better. They really weren't too bad - not especially wispy but just a little thinner than the rest as you can see from my profile picture. Nonetheless, now that I'm back to waist I really think I may keep cutting back to this length. Only time will tell!

Feli, My goal 1 is TB. My sig has my total goal. I want to be TB braided, which I am guessing is around 48.

Glad you are pleased with your cut! I think I would rather chop a finger off right now than trim. LOL. But I had such a horrible experience last time.

Now that my hair is back to where it was before I had 4" trimmed last August, I notice a difference in the ease of care because my ends are in better shape. But there is a period, between waist and where I am now (almost hip) that seems hard to handle. It doesn't want to go into buns well, tangles when down, always in my way. It still tangles. That will get better when winter goes away.

I noticed the distance between waist and hip for some is quite short. It is a difference of 6" for me. I suppose if I was a bit thinner (working on that, lost 8 lbs so far) my waist would be lower? The fat makes it ride up higher. LOL. The difference between hip and TB for me is about 4".

I need to get my updated picture loaded to my avatar. I always wear the same pair of pants.

Strangely enough, I made it from BSL to waist quite quickly, but like WaitingSoLong, the distances between my waist and hips and hips and tailbone are quite large so getting from waist to hip took me well over one year and I think I'd need almost another year from hip to tailbone (have just trimmed back to waist from hip due to my ends starting to get thin, so the waiting will start again!).

I am finally past waist (81cm - 32in) when measured stretched and on my way to hip (88cm - 35in). I am currently at 85cm (33.4in) and my hair is now at waist when wurly.

I originally reached waist in July 09 and then I trimmed to get rid of some see through ends and the last of the layers. Finally got back to waist in December 09.

It seemed to take forever to get from BSL to waist! but since reaching waist it seems to be so much easier - perhaps because I like this length and while I am looking forward to reaching tailbone (on my way to my final goal (for now) of classic) I like my hair and find it easy to work with at anything past waist.

Problem is, when my hair dries it bounces back to waist!

I love having my hair wet for just this reason! Yesterday I got one of the rare hair comments from my husband. He commented on how it was getting close to my butt crack (so I educated him on LHC length terms LOL). He asked me how long he thought my terminal length would be and said he thought I woudl be a solid hip by our vacation in July. I agreed!

TBL by Christmas. right?

I am trying to figure out how much time passes between reaching a goal wet and reaching the same goal dry. It is about a difference of 2", so I am guessing about 3 months for me.

Also, I have figured out that if in the shower I tilt my head back as far as I can (love to feel that hair down at TBL) I will reach that length without tilting in about 8-10 months. Again, just an estimate.

I have always wanted to have waist length hair. It seemed to take forever to get from bra strap to waist. It finally happened when I found this forum and began to read and test and try new things. After reading off and on for almost a year, I joined and began to try and then apply what I had learned.

When I washed my hair, I would most always have it flipped over as I washed and rinsed, scrunched in product and plopped. Get dressed, make-up, bun and go. At night I usually braided it over my shoulder and collapsed into bed.

I had a 3-4 inch trim in October to even the hemline as it had been 22 months since I let someone take scissors to me. (I have phobia of salons and the staff and scissors). I watched her closely, but the way she was cutting it, I never really noticed the entire length as I was focused on the ends that were coming off. In places there was quite a bit and in others, hardly any as it should have been; silly hair refuses to grow at exactly the same rate at the same time.

I have been wearing my hair up for a very long time. Ficcare's are my best friend. Twist, twist - not to tight - make a bun, use my magic Ficcare and done!

The other night I was playing with makeup and hair as I made some extra 'me time' early in the evening. I was still naked in the bathroom after my shower when I took the plop down and - and- and- something tickled my bottom. I thought it was just the usual post shower comb out loose hairs. I put my hand hand behind me and grabbed not loose hairs but my hair. MY HAIR! it was below my waist. It was... yes... it was at the top of the ummmm... oh yes, vertical smile :eyebrows:

I was stunned. I grabbed a mirrior and looked and then felt and tugged some more. It's true. It happened. My hair. To my butt. Really!?!!!

Ok, I have to confess, when it dries, the thick, coarse, curly stuff shrinks up several inches. Butt I know.

Where to next? I don't know. I don't have to decide now. I'm just enjoying knowing how long my hair is and that it is healthy. I am happy. I did it!

Not alone. OH no, not alone. All of you helped me. Your stories, your journeys, your successes and your failures. Your gripes and groans and your squeals of excitement. The new members asking the same questions over and over and the patience of the long time members answering patiently. I have learned a lot. Thank you all for helping me achieve a goal I was told could not be reached.

For me TB is about 90cm - 35.4" so apparently there are advantages to being short!
Still got about 8cm - 3" to go!

Phalaenopsis I definitely have a lot more breakage, compounded by my very thin and tangly hair. Personally I find catnip and tying my hair up more to be helping, but it's still a very slow process.
My hair seems to just keep getting white dots and splitting off, unfortunately I seem to have more breakage than growth at the moment! Rather discouraging! But in the photos my hair does seem *thicker* and healthier, so at least that's something :)

Does anyone else worry they've actually reached terminal before TB? Sometimes I wonder if I will ever make it there... only time will tell.

I have a question for all those longer than waistlength. Did you start to notice that from waist on, your hair suffers more? More splitends and such? I'm experiencing this and I don't know what to do. I would love to reach hip/tailbone.Yes more and more split ends as it gets longer. The hair at that length is older and much more fragile so I'm guessing that's a big part of it. I've been to tailbone twice before. I didn't have the greatest ends. This time I'm trying to be more diligent with S & D and am planning to do more mini trims. My ends weren't too bad until I got past hip length. I am hoping I can get farther this time.

I have never had a problem with split ends since the 80's, early 90's (all that teasing and hairspray I guess LOL) and my hair was BSL or shorter then. I used to pull it around front in class and pull off all the split ends (or split them further...cringe). I blame curling irons, too, which I never use now. I do blow-dry some, especially in winter because it can take ALL day, literally, to air dry. And I use the hot setting, because I am impatient and cold!

I am surprised to NOT see any splits considering the last 6-8" of my hair is dyed hair from a few years ago and the fact I blow-fry my hair.

It probably depends on your climate and hair type and perhaps if you are using an iron or not. I think it can be unavoidable to a degree. I must get some breakage or I would never need a trim, right?

But I also keep my hair up more when it is long to get it out of the way when I am working. Maybe that helps it?

My hair gets blowndried twice a year, when it gets at trim at the hairdresser's. I don't use an iron. But I have fine hair, so it's very fragile. I don't think the constant knotting helps... but cones don't work for me. They make my hair dry instantly or after 1 day it becomes cotton candy. It's very hard to find something that makes detangling easier... Maybe that's also the culprit, all those tangles...

I wanna join! My hair is finally a solid waist length now :)
According to the data (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=36275) it will probably take a year to get to tailbone, which is 37.5 inches on me and 7 inches longer than my current length. But hip should come along late this summer :D

Yes, I've noticed the same. I had a small trim in January to help with this but I'm still noticing more splits than before. I have started using coconut oil religiously and I avoid styles that I know tend to break my hair.

I also have very fine hair. The strands are transparent. The FIRST time I grew my hair long was in my 20's to 30's. I could not get it to grow past my waist. I thought that was my terminal length. (I usually wore it down & loose.)
This time, it's about a 1/2" past my waist & healthy. I'm not getting split ends, or a dry uneven edge. This is what I've learned at LHC - I bun or braid. Never loose. Never do the same style twice in a row (to keep the stress low on my scalp/hair). I condition with coconut oil. That's pretty much my routine. Easy peasy.
Oh; and I don't comb it out until it's at least half dry. Well, except in the summer. I sit in the sun & have a languid experience.
There are some spray in detangle products out there. I have one of 'em & it works if I'm in a hurry & Have to comb it wet.

Braiding or bunning would help the knotting. Have you looked at the articles section? There are articles on how to tell if your hair needs a protein treatment, er other kinds of treatments. :o I haven't needed to use a treatment. Yet. Good luck.

I am also really noticing a lot more problems with breakage now that I have hit waist. My hemline is not as thick as it was at shorter lengths for sure. For that reason I've committed to maintaining at waist this spring to thicken up....it is part of the plan of growing to tailbone :) I know it is going to take me MUCH longer to get to tailbone by doing this, but I want to like my hair at all of its lengths and right now I do not like my hemline. I am going to try coconut oil again, even though in the past it has made my ends crunchy, and see if this helps. I am doing s &ds, wearing up a lot, only finger combing... catnip didn't work for me in the past, but I might try that again too. Going to be watching this thread for other tips.

I have thought about this and I think the main problem is that I wear it loose all the time. I'm still doing my Master degree, so I wear a backpack everyday. I think it might be quite damaging when my hair gets stuck under it all the time. But I'm not used to holding updos for a long time. I'll have to practise, practise, practise... don't I?

But now, with the damage already done, maybe I should get at trim? Even though it's only been three months?

I am currently at 31" and I need to grow about 3" more to be tailbone. It seems like it's taking forever to grow! Theirs been a gradual slowing down of the speed of growth or perhaps I've had more breakage?

I've definitely had to change my routine along the way too. I pretty much always wear it up, it's more comfortable and easier. If I wear it down I start getting annoyed with it and put it up pretty quick.

I am *this* close to tailbone, maybe an inch to go. I have returned to cone products recently. When my hair was shorter (above waist) I would wash (with shampoo bars) and go. No conditioner, no leave in. As my hair got longer I reintroduced commercial conditioner to my routine, and now for the past couple of months or so I have been slathering my length and ends in conditioner before I let the shampoo touch my head, and also condition liberally after shampoo, with a cone conditioner for the last 10cm of my hair.

I am just above hip right now...*should* make it to tailbone by the end of this year :)

I noticed damage increasing as I passed WL, but I think that was because I wore it down a lot, and brushed it while it was wet all the time (eek!)

Now that I'm taking much better care of it, after a few S&D missions, it looks a lot healthier.

Hi, prettydark. We are about the same length. I was 33.75 before my 0.25" trim a week or two ago. It was 33.5 after the trim, but is probably a bit longer than that now...and I'm just past hip, as well.

It has taken me 6 months of soaking things in here to decide to get a little more active.

I have that same problem with more damage now that it's past waist... It's been tailbone length at least twice in the past year, but I have to keep trimming it back because there are only wispy ends that length. Sigh. Suppose that'll continue until I get the rest of the highlighting and chemical dye damage out of my hair... Let's see... last highlights were in spring '06, and last dye in July '08... So I've still got a while.

I am stalled out also, only about 1/4" this last month, stuck tight at 34" :disgust:. I still need another inch to have the longest hair of my life (I made it almost to 35 before my last trim) Will do official measure on Wednesday, I think.

And I found the first dead ends I have had in years today  I have to blame it on wearing my hair down WAY too much lately and blow frying it :run:, both of which I do because I have been so COLD! I actually used my hair as a sweater the other day because my DD stole my jacket LOL. The weather is warming up and I plan to do hair-up-for-a-month again. I cannot seem to make it past a month doing this. Mainly because I hate how I look but I have lost about 15 lbs (:happydance:) and my face is thinner so I think I can do it now.

DE is not helping that I can tell but it has only been about 6 days. I have MTG but not ready to try that yet. Besides, I am using it on my horses and that stuff works wonders on them. I am about to hip. I am a breath away. Once I am to hip I have 2" to TB. GROW. :drama::pray:

Checking in here. :)

After weighing the pros and cons, I've decided to maintain where I am now (somewhere between waist and hip) and trim off all the old bleach damage each month. Then, I will continue on to my final goal of tailbone.

I mainly decided to do this because it is becoming a real struggle to keep my very damaged ends from even more damage. They are very fragile, and since I don't want to use silicones at all, I have to care for them using less protective (but 'natural') products.

If I don't trim until tailbone, I will be at my goal but with really horrible ends. They may also start breaking off and eat up any gains in length that I make.

I feel great about this decision! I have to admit I really like the active aspect of trimming - just letting it grow is too passive for me! :D

It's not difficult at all. You can try it on 'dry' - follow the instructions, but don't hold scissors. After you did it once, you'll see it's nothing to worry about.

Official monthly measure: 34 1/4"! Was I surprised! I thought I was stalled out. Not a lot of growth, only 1/2 " but that is ok. I usually get 3/4". I am actually just past 34 1/4, like 34 1/3 but let's not split hairs.

I figure I measure longer than I really am because I have a widows peak and I measure from the front most point of my hairline. But I have always measured from there so...

I am so close to hip, probably brushing it but I like a "solid" goal, so it'll take 35" for me to say I am hip. Hopefully my next month's measure will yield the good news! Next measure: April 25th.

Edited to add that my husband says I am still at 34" and I didn't get that 1/4". Guess I will change my details under my avatar.

Had a three inch trim last night so I'm back to 34.5 inches. I was only intending to chop 1cm, but when I asked my fiance to even up my back, instead of triming tiny bits at a time he chopped off an inch in one big chop. Oh well next time I'll make sure to inform him before I give him the scissors.
I have to admit the ends are feeling a ton healthier. and my old bangs are closer to being grown out. They're only 4.5inches shorter than the rest of the length.
I think I'll re-trim in about 6 months time. That will get rid of most of the tangled mess of chemical damage.

Hi, I'm new and have been reading through this thread slowly but surely and figured I should join in. I've learned a lot from reading your discussions. I have some questions about length if you do not mind.

I have 2c or 3a hair that is fine to medium in texture. My hair frizzes very easily and has quite a bit of shrinkage depending on the humidity. When wet, it is about 2 inches above my vertical smile. When dry, it ranges from hip length to above waist (like today because it rained). Therefore I'm not sure what length to say that may hair is?

Also, the outer layer grows much faster/is less curly than the inner layer. If you looked underneath the outer layer which is straighter, the inner most layer (nape hair) is bsl when dry. Does that effect the length?

Thanks

Gosh! I wish my hair grew a lot faster! Right now its just barely past waist about 1/2 inch. or so with fairytale ends that are starting to look thinner...I shouldn't have gotten layers in the first place, I shouldn't have even chopped my hair. I got 7 inches chopped due to previous damage, it used to be at hip. And I'm trying to maintain my hair healthy and go classic or beyond. :cheese: Plus, no more trimming for me unless there are necessary individual split ends that need to be snipped. :)

My hair stayed at waist-length for a long time as I trimmed off hair that was damaged from a previous perm and generally bad hair-care habits, but from the time I stopped keeping it trimmed to waist until I hit tailbone it was probably about two years. During that time I realized that, especially in this desert state, I would have to pay a lot closer attention to oiling, getting rid of split ends, and wearing updos that kept my hair clear of the vehicle seat and my office chair because the braids were just allowing too much rubbing. The last three inches have taken about a year and a half though (since my last hair pic was taken...must get a pic of my longer hair :D) so these minor tweaks must have helped a lot. Before that I stalled out at mid-back and started paying a lot more attention to patting my hair dry instead of "scrubbing" it, and also avoiding said scrubbing while washing it, and got rid of my plastic combs and all of my hair ties with the little metal tab on them.

About the self-trim thing: I think it is considerably more difficult to get good self-trim results for hair in the 1 range than for the wavies and curlies. Idun´s hair is 1b, and while it is entirely possible hat she trims her own hair it would be more difficult to get a clean hemline than it would be e.g. for me, because my waves even out any slight crookedness. Of course it also depends on how much one plans on wearing the hair down. I never wear my hair down, so I don´t really care about having a straight hemline.

I guess I can join this thread...my hair is finally just barely brushing waist. I have pretty curly hair so when I stretch I am at waist. I am thinking I wanna grow to TB or hip, not really sure which. At some point I am gonna maintain while I get the henna cut off. I do wear it down a lot of the time, but hair seems to grow pretty fast. I co wash regularly, on occasion I will use clarifying conditioner if I feel gunky. I may use a little of Loreal moisturizing sulfate free shampoo, every once and a while cause I think it does dry my scalp so I use pretty infrequently. Sometimes I can just use a tad bit of Suave shampoo mixed in with some conditioner.

Lately I have been braiding and using a scrunchie at night to sleep or if I'm just hanging around the house...I love how it loosens my curls and gives me waves. It has actually allowed me to get second day hair and still look pretty damn good....and that never happens. I had resolved myself to doing my whole hair process everyday. I will spritz the tassel with water and use a little coconut oil on it.

I also S&D a lot...just got some newer hair cutting scissors and I sit here in the sun while I'm watching t.v. or doing some other beauty treatment.

It's a painful process, I have been thinking of msm lately. We'll see. I am gonna track it this month with no trims to see the growth rate.

Being on LHC has made me want to grow my hair out longer than my previous goal! To waist...then maybe hips...or maybe classic? Or should I go all out and grow it way out beyond the classic length?

So inspiring!

SummerWarmth, I was just thinking that, too!

My first goal is to get to tailbone and be all blunt with no layers, but after that I think I will definitely go longer!

Having hair down to my knees feels like a beautiful idea!

I was at TB last spring, but got a couple inches cut off because it was just too thin at the ends. I got a trim to even up the ends a bit, help thicken the hem again and give a slight U shape in early December. I'm now solidly to hip, but much thicker below BSL/WL. My hem isn't fairy tailing nearly so much this time, either. Buns are definitely better than braids for my hair.

I still have a good couple inches to go to get to TB. If it thins out too much I probably will just maintain wherever it has a thick enough hemline to make me happy.

I might do away with the layers eventually, too.

I was definitely inspired by Cinnamon Hair. If you haven't seen her webpage, www.beyondclassiclength.com you should take a gander at her knee length hair.

So, something I'm frustrated about at this length: I can't wear my hair down, or even in a low ponytail, for more than about 10 minutes without it getting all tangled where it rubs against my shirt back. I know some of this is texture--the hair that grows just above the nape of my neck is my curliest and coarsest--but I don't recall it happening nearly as back when I was at BSL or above.

So, poo on that.

I just thought I'd check in to ask how long everyone has left to reach their goal of tailbone.

I just did a much-needed trim, which set me back two inches, and I've measured from my hemline to my tailbone. I have 6 inches to grow to get there (dry and unstretched) which means approximately one more year of (im)patient waiting!

So, those are my stats: 6 inches, one year to go.

April 7th, 2010, 12:24 PM
I just did a trim myself as my ends were getting wispy and uneven. I'm guessing I have around 4 more inches to go (I don't measure), before tailbone. I can feel it getting closer; when I tilt my head back I'm there. :-) So *fingerscrossed* I should have TB near the end of 2010.

I'm also hoping for tb by the end of 2010. I'm trimming 0.25" monthly, but if my growth rate stays steady, I'll still be gaining a half inch each month, which will get me the 4 inches or so in the next 8 months.

Not sure if I belong here or the tailbone to classic lot! :p
I recently trimmed my tailbone length hair to just shy of tailbone to get rid of my fairytale ends. Though it seems to have grown back to just about tailbone fairly quickly. Just needs to thicken up at the ends really so I'm a solid tailbone. Though I don't plan to stop here, classic is my goal. :)

Mind you despite being at tailbone at the back, my hair only just reaches my hipbones at the front, which is annoying. Ah well. Grow hair, grow!

Hi! I am in :D My hair right now is 79 cm, or 31 inches. Tailbone on me is 90 cm, which is 35.5 inches. Sounds like I have 4.5 inches to go! I hope to be there in a year, because I will probably trim 1 inch along the way. Then I will decide if I want to grow longer :)

I think I can finally join you guys in your journey from waist length to tailbone! I took a picture two nights ago and sure enough, at its curliest it is full waist length and maybe as much as an inch past waist. WhooHoo!!! (I would post a picture here, but I'm afraid I can't figure out how to do it. Oh well.)

I've been taking biotin supplements for the past year, and I just started taking MSM this week (mostly for arthritis) so, like so many of you, I am also hoping to reach tailbone by the end of the year. Grow hair grow!!!

I'm at 33.5 now according to my measuring tape, and it's probably going to take all summer to really get to tailbone.

I can't stand my ends when they get scraggly, so fairytales are not an option for me. Just had about a 1/2" trim, which was sorely needed.

It feels like I'll never get there, really.

I just measured this morning, and I'm at a solid 30.5". That makes me about an inch or so past my waist. I can't wait until I reach tailbone. That might be next year... arg. Well, if I can make it to hip by my birthday (in November) I'll be ecstatic.

I microtrim. I don't do it on a schedule, just whenever it needs it; usually every three months or so. But I have layers to grow out. Recently I cut 2 inches off my base layer and now my ends feel much thicker.

Well done on growing this far! Yay!

I only recently figured out how to post pics, so I will share with you what I have learned! I think there is an actual icon somewhere that you are supposed to click on, but I haven't figured out where it is, so I do it manually by typing it in myself. Here's what I do for attaching a pic:

You need to have your pic stored somewhere that has a URL. You can use a website - I used picresize.com.

Then, when you're writing your post, in the place that you want your picture to appear, copy and paste what I've typed below, and copy and paste your URL into it instead, like this:

typeURLhere.com

That's it! That's all you need to do. You need to make sure it looks exactly like that. I think you need to have a space after the end of the URL and before the bracket. I couldn't get it to work otherwise.

Also, the URL needs to be in a certain format. Once you have got your picture stored on a website somewhere, right click on it, and then click "properties" and a box will pop up with lots of info, amonst which will be a weird looking version of your URL. That's the one you need to copy and paste into those weird brackets. Don't ask me why or how it is different from the normal URL! I am not very technically minded...I just go with what works!

I just wanted to pop in and claim it loud! I'm officially, definitely solid BCL! I felt my hair between my cheeks in the shower! (Not because it was wet, but mostly because it's the only place where I both wear my hair down and wear no pants.)
I can't see very well this area, but I think I'm like, 1 1/4“ from the tip of my tailbone. Yayyyy! So: BCL on me is 38“, TBL is 40“ and classical is probably 45“.
Happy growing everyone, and welcome to all newcomers! Happy growing!

I've always done regular trims. Usually every three months I take about an inch off. I don't like fairy-tail ends, so I have to do trims, especially on my baby-fine hair.

I always thought I was sitting right at waist, but from the length shot I took, I am a cpl inches past! I am heading towards tailbone, with classic my ultimate goal......maybe longer! So, for right now, TB is my next goal. I have been stalled for a cpl months....I think. I have kind of given up on measuring for now. I may sit at TBL for a little while to thicken up my ends. I have fine hair, so fairytale ends are kind of unavoidable for me unless I just sit at a length and trim well.
Question- is TB the same as BCL? I know everyone's bones sit differently, but I think on me, TB is BCL

It just depends on your own individual anatomy. If you have a feel around, you should be able to feel your tailbone. I discovered mine was right at the top of the "line!"

I'm not sure where my tailbone actually is, but as a hair goal I would like to think that BCL is the very top of the crack, classic is the very bottom (the line where the thighs meet the ... bottom :p) and tailbone is right there in the middle. I like having well spaced goals that make sense so I won't feel like I'm stuck somewhere for months when actually it's just the next goal that is too far away. :)

I can actually feel my tailbone, and it's right at the top of my "vertical smile," not in the middle. So, for me, tailbone is what you would refer to as BCL.

I'm not too keen on anatomy, but as far as I know, the bone you feel at the very top on the crack is not the tailbone (I can feel it too). The tailbone is fairly somewhere in the middle (http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/2007/08/01/health/adam/19464.jpg), but it can vary from person to person of course.

Isn't tail bone right where we were meant to have tails as monkeys? E.g, right above our crack, that boney part? o.o; Because my father showed me my tailbone and uhhh, he was trained medically. o.o *Shrug* Maybe he forgot? xD!!

Heidi_234

Well, I'm no doctor or nurse or anything, just telling what I've read around here. AFAIK, that's what is considered tailbone length around here, although there's always quite a bit of confusion going on. Sammich, maybe it *is* the tail, but over the course of time the bone inverted inwards and ended up so low.

Chopandchange - I think it's the name of the goal that you might want to change, not the goal. After all it's not about the name of the length, but how it feels on you. If the top of the vertical smile is your goal, so be it. One milestone at a time, you'll get them all eventually. :)

I´m pretty sure tailbone is where the tatoo is in this picture. That is where the tailbone sticks out the most. Although it ends further down where Heidi says, it makes little sense, I think, to use the end of the tailbone as a mark since it bends inwardly.

ETA: I see that in many drawings of the spine, only the lowest part (Coccyx) is called tailbone.

Well, again, I only know about anatomy what the interwebz tell me. I explained why I choose to place 'tailbone' as the middle of the bum. I agree it is nice to have a milstone between BCL and classic. It would also be nice though to be sure what LHC tailbone is, wheter it is the very tip of the tailbone or somewhere above BCL. It´s kind of confusing :o.
